Wedge Scouting Report: Denzel Perryman

DPerryman3Wedge ID

When I was a young tadpole I knew nothing about Earth.  We didn’t really care much for this side of the Universe.  Until one day when I received a strange transmission.  It was a commercial for the NFL’s Greatest hits on BETA!  after I was finished laughing about the format of the video I began to watch the hitting.  These guys were killing each other – it was amazing.  I fell in love with Earth at that moment.  Where else can you drive your shoulder into another lifeform until he hits the ground to demonstrate great technique?NFlGreatest

You can imagine how disappointed I was when I came to this planet and learned that the game had changed to a Tom Brady-Friendly game, where defensive players were penalized if they did anything else but target another players knees on a hit.  So when I was assigned to research how to destroy the Earth – I was overcome with joy!  If there is no more violence in football, I’m going to make some violence of my own.  But you know what, lately I’m having a crisis of conscious.  You know why?  Because Denzel Perryman will knock your head off that’s why!  Now shut your bitchy human mouth and accept your pain!  This guy can hit!!!

D.Perryman1

Perryman is a 6’0, 235 lbs Linebacker out of Miami, the real Miami not the one in Ohio.  Undersized?  I don’t think so, he has a great stout frame and he uses it to hammer away at ball carriers.  Its something else to watch a guy with that U on his helmet wearing the number 52 and thumping people.  Reminds me of Ray Lewis.  Perryman has a long way to live up to Lewis’ career but if he stays healthy and physical he can be a pro bowl caliber Middle Linebacker.

DPerryman2

So is it all just thumping ball carriers?  In this day and age NFL scouts want their Inside Linebackers to cover.  Perryman can do that too.  He is a versatile Linebacker, not a 2 down guy.  He should be able to run with most backs and tight ends in the NFL.

DPerryman3

In four years in Miami, Perryman had 2 Interceptions and 4.5 sacks.  But the real impressive stats are his 7 forces fumbles and 343 tackles.  That’s a middle linebacker!!!

Dperryman5

Perryman is expected to be drafted anywhere between the late first round to the late 2nd round.  It will be interesting to see if his combine numbers cause him to fall.  He is not exactly a great athlete with jaw dropping combine numbers.

DPerryman4

But it’s not Perryman’s athleticism that is going to save the Earth.  Its his hitting.  If Perryman was an Alien Weapon of Destruction he would be the Great Hammer of the Alien Diety Haumea.

    It’s not a science
But I like to use cbs as a gage to where guys might go

    http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/prospectrankings

You can see the 2 dts, 2 qbs, and 5 edge guys with Dupree at 14

And they have cooper above white

But do Sherff, Peat or Collins come off the board before 14?
    That is the big question

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Do you put Cooper above White? I think that ranking was established pre combine, but seems like the whole world has White as their top WR prospect now. I’d love for him to fall to us, but I’d be shocked if it happened.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think they updated it after the combine

I don’t personally out cooper over white
But I’ve felt that way for months
And I don’t always follow the established sights on rankings

Cooper had a good combine too
        Not good like white
        But respectable

Cooper is getting the “polished” tag line
        And he deserves it

But the thing that sets white apart now is size and speed
And it’s hard to believe an nfl GM will choose cooper over white
        But it can happen

Likewise I think a GM might choose Parker or Dgb over white

Dgb is the Wildcard of the class

Some GM might have him tops on their board

  2. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I understand the cut of Hartline. I think he is a talent in somewhat of a decline. Landry seems to have taken on his role but still sad to seem him go. He put in good service for this team.

  3. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Jahn:

Saw your post about Mariotta vs. Winston. Not surprisingly I come out on the other side of it. That doesn’t mean I think Mariotta is going to suck but I think his transition to the pro game will be more difficult than Winston’s. Winston played in a pro offense and is used to playing under center. The spread option is a one read offense and Mariotta will have to transition into it. I think he can and is certainly a legit top of the draft talent. I just think in terms of pure QB talent and in particular passing talent, Winston is the better of the two.

  4. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

@AdamHBeasley: Multiple people have told me that Tannenbaum actually has his eye on 2016. Talked about a 3-year plan yesterday. A purge would support it.

  5. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Piggy,

Every year teams use players as pawn in the top 10.

It’s all one big smoke screen at this point as every year a surprise top 10 pick happens and a surprise ‘drop of the top 10’ pick happens.

Everyone keeps saying Jags will go D, but if they go WR, then who knows how the top 10 shapes up.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

But they drafted marquis lee and another WR last year

I think the jags will go D or even OL

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

        Pig,
Remember The Cardinals drafted Anquan Boldin and also the 1st round WR from PSU one year and the very next they picked up Fitz.

  6. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

@ckparrot: Hartline was touchy w/ fans on twitter and more than a little iffy with reporters I think, but he was really good w/ Dolfans on the street.

  7. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Heat fans hate him because he mocked them when LBJ went back to Cleveland. Also hated by a lot of SoFla residence because he’d defend Ohio.

    ****
    Exactly
And I still hold that against him too

  8. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I like White a lot. However, I still like Cooper better. White is essentially a 1 year wonder. Cooper has been playing and producing for multiple years. White has more upside, Cooper is less likely to bust. I would be happy if either one became a phin.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Well white is a Juco transfer
So he was only in wvu for 2 years
And he did produce in year 1
But they slowly worked him in

This year he became the focal point of the offense and thrived
So I don’t read too much in the 1 year wonder thing

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

He produced as a junior but not like the level he produced this year. There was definitely a learning curve for him. One knock I have been reading on him is that he struggles with his confidence. Not sure what that means but I have heard that and seen it in print.

  9. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’ll see your 5% if he gets caught butt fucking a moose prior to the draft.

    ****
What do you have against moose?

Do you know what kind of hand strength that will take?
    Another asset of whites

  10. Tim Knight's avatar Silly Tim says:

Kevin White is viewed as putting it all together last year and his upside is high.

  11. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I also rally like Devante Parker a lot. I would not complain if he was the pick as well.

  12. Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

White isn’t a one year wonder, he’s just a kid who took the Juco route to get his life in order. He wasn’t slow to come along his Jr. year either, but rather his reps were limited by his team. If he had just as many looks his Jr. year as he did his Sr. year he’d have put up similar numbers.

    All IMHO.

Also, calling OR’s a simple 1 read spread option offense is off the mark. It’s not a 1 read, but that’s an easy categorization to make for fans who didn’t watch them play much. Stats nerds have broken down the numbers and shown Mariotta was actually more accurate from the pocket then winston was. Taking snaps from center hasn’t really been much of a challenge for most of the College QBs who come in, so I doubt it will be for Mariotta, but in the end, like Tannehill, if a team isn’t going to build his offense around a QBs skillset, they have no business drafting one highly anyway.

If you notice, I really don’t have to pick apart Winston’s game to argue Marriota will be better, I just think he’s actually a better athlete and has a better head on his shoulders all the way around. I do get the argument that the offense Winston played is more suited to the Pro-Game than OR’s, but to be honest, when I watched the Rose bowl, I thought OR looked more like a professional style offense then Fl State did…and when those 2 squared off, Mariotta shined and Winston flopped. Still, just one game, but it was interesting to see them compete at the highest level, and see how they performed.

Ken, think about being a counterpart to a beer bet or something.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

It’s not like I think Mariotta is going to suck much like I did in my arguments about Manziel with you last year. When I watch Winston I see Big Ben. He is built similarly and plays like him. I have seen him shake off direct hits and keep his eyes downfiield. He is also emotionally immature at least off the field. But the immaturity issues don’t seem to bleed over to his play. In terms of passing skills I go with Winston but I do like Mariotta as well but I think there will be a learniing curve. They have very different games but recent history generally indicates bet on the guy from the pro system vs. the guy from the spread system.

  13. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I also really like Jalen Strong. I was hoping he would be around in round 2 but I have seen a lot of mocks moving him into the later part of the 1st round

  14. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

@AdamHBeasley: In the next 12 days, we could see Tannenbaum/Hickey undo nearly all the mistakes of the 2013 offseason.

  15. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think it’s very possible at least 2-3 OL go by #13, most likely Scherff, Peat and possibly Collins. It also may end up just Scherff, and the other go shortly after.

  16. Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Oh…that ‘Mando article about Hartline left me feeling queasy. I don’t think he’s coming back if that stuff is accurate. Ugh….

But it mentioned something VERY intriguing (to me) and it’s never been brought up before. It mentioned a possible pay cut for Wallace.

If ever there were a way to demonstrate his committment to the team and to Tannehill for Wallace, this would be it. Nothing says “Mea Culpa” like leaving money on the table.

Ouch Ken, Johnny Manziel is a wicked right cross 🙂

I liked Bridgewater too, and IIRC you didn’t, so maybe I still get some redemption, maybe Manziel surprises the whole world at this point and gets his act together, and rehab sticks. But I wouldn’t bet on it.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I wasn’t that down on Bridgewater. I thought he might be the best of last year’s class but that last year’s class was a weak class. I think this year’s class of QBs is also on the weaker side but I think both Mariotta and Winston are better than anybody from last year’s class.

Jahn – It’s odd that Manziel’s undoing won’t be his fragile build and playing style, but his playing style after hours.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

What’s amazing is whenever Omar says something the opposite always happens…LMAO

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Yeah, I’m surprised too. I’m not closing the door on him just yet, but I’m not very optimistic either. Wouldn’t even be shocked if Cleveland goes after another QB this draft….

  27. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Sorry to see Hartline dumped…he was a true pro. But as a possible fall back option the Falcons released WR Harry Douglas.
Douglas has been a productive wideout in Atlanta when either Julio Jones or Roddy White has been injured, but he’s going to be 31 this season and new OC Kyle Shanahan’s offense is going to go through Jones even more than it has in the past. There was no reason to pay all three of Jones, White, and Douglas.

    Piggy’s WR rankings

    1 white

    3 Parker

Leonard Nimoy died this morning, while saddened by it, its not hitting me as hard as im sure it is for some of you full on trekkies. Still huge loss, and im sad to hear it.

  35. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

With all the interest in Josh McCown, and even Vince Young attempting another comeback, I got to think Matt Moore will leaving for more than we can pay him and a chance to start somewhere.

  36. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

My LB crush getting too much press now, I fear he’ll move up to far.

One AFC scout noted “in theory” Clemson LB Stephone Anthony Combine performance “changes his scouting report from a two-down guy to a possible three-down linebacker.”
Anthony recorded a 4.56 forty, 1.57 10 yard split, 37″ vertical, 10’2″ broad jump, 7.07 3-cone and 4.03 20 yard short shuttle. That is outstanding. Our issue, Anthony does not play even close to that speed due to the angles he takes when facing lineman and trash at the second level. He makes himself look like a much lesser athlete.

  37. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

GOD DAMN IT! I kinda knew it was coming, but I am pissed. I liked my scrappy white WR! Oh, well Landry is my favorite WR on the team now anyway.

  38. D's avatar D says:

Im a mid round fan of Anthony, just not an early round fan. 40 times and cone drills dont change what i see on film, because there is more to football than athletics. I think to some combine stats tells them he has the ability to be coached into a starting caliber person, to me i generally assume that about most players unless they have a lazy attitude and you get that more from interviews. To me those combine stats just let me know what expectations to have, but they wouldn’t overrule multiple games of film.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Agreed, and I think Anthony’s few shortcomings can be coached out of him. He reminds of Jenkins who took a nice leap in year 2.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

When it comes to LBs I’d much rather see it on film and have them have bad combine numbers than the other way around. Don’t really have an educated opinion on Anthony though.

  39. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

@ckparrot: #BeasleyBomb: Philbin wants Wallace gone, Hickey “sympathetic to keeping him”. Tannenbaum a question mark. http://t.co/1n5tDHCAuK

    • Tim Knight's avatar Silly Tim says:

I can’t buy reports like this because they don’t speak publicly about stuff like this.

    • D's avatar D says:

I agree, i mean logically sounds plausible but like Tim said, they dont disclose this kinda shit. So either there is a really deep level mole in the organization or its completely opinionated and stated as fact.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

The report itself is highly open to interpretation. Even the tweet restates what the “source” says:

“Philbin, who famously has a no-drama philosophy when it comes to players, is believed to be in favor of letting Wallace go. Hickey, meanwhile, is apparently more sympathetic to keeping him.

Left unclear: What exactly Tannenbaum wants — for 2015 and beyond.”

  40. Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

GDP, Don’t you think if Moore was going to get more money and a chance to start it would have happened 2 years ago before he signed that contract with us? I hear ya on the Vince Young/ McCown thing, but I think those two guys are two totally different stories. McCown produced recently in the league for Chicago, and is still fresh on the minds of GMs who wanted to sign him before Tampa did…but Young has been out of the league for several years, and comebacks from players like that are almost unheard of. Odds of coming back and succeeding after being out for 2 seasons are next to nil.

I am kinda curious about Matt Moore though, just seems like he was happy with a solid backup contract before, and would be again, but I don’t know if the FO wants him in that role any longer…

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

No, he signed that contract not knowing if Tannehill would workout. Surprise!
Plus the QB landscape was different in the NFL at that time. Now there seems to be a decent QB shortage with all the recent busts going on with a handful of teams.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Moore’s been around the block. Teams don’t draft guys at 8 overall and then bench him for a journeyman, and the 3M he got per year was obviously solid backup money in my mind. I remember Pat Kirwan saying as much on NFL sirius. Something to the effect of: “Currently I had Matt Moore as my top available FA (I think Flynn and Alex Smith had already signed contracts at that juncture), but it would seem he’s content to be a mentor and backup to Tannehill in Miami.”

Paraphrased, just going off memory. I remember thinking he knew he was signing a backup contract, but maybe he did think he was going to win the starting spot. Seems like there would’ve been far better places to try and be a starter then in Miami with Tannehill though,…but I can’t remember what the QB landscape looked like at the time.

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

BTW, I hear ya on a players film meaning more than combine numbers, but LB Anthony’s film is pretty good, his combine numbers now make him more attractive.
I like his size over some of the other guys like Perryman, Dawson, Kendricks. They are ahead of him in some regards, but you can’t coach size.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Good to hear about Anthony. I wanted to be careful not to pre-judge him because I haven’t watched any tape at all on him at this point.

  41. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

RG3 has been benched, Geno Smith, & Manuel, the Browns are a mess too. I bet those teams would like Moore right about now or then.

  42. Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

    GDP,

I think we were misremembering. 2012 he had already been Tannehill’s backup. He signed the 2 year deal in 2013 knowing he was the backup…at least thats what Wiki told me. LOL..

    “2012 season[edit]
During the offseason, Moore was battling for the starting QB role against newly drafted Ryan Tannehill and newly signed David Garrard.[17] Moore became second quarterback. On November 28, 2012, in a Week 8 game against the New York Jets, Moore went in for Tannehill after he left the game with injuries to his left knee and thigh. Moore went 11 for 19 on his passes with a touchdown to lead a 30-9 victory over the Jets.

    2013 season[edit]
On March 8, 2013, Moore re-signed with the Dolphins, agreeing on a two-year deal to remain a backup for Tannehill.[18]”

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I think at that time he wasn’t getting much attention around the league where most all teams seemed set at QB for time being. Plus he was coming off starting several games in 2011 for us, was named team MVP (insert Home chanting here), so I think Matt figured he’d see if he was still needed here incase a green QB with just 19 starts faltered.
But, I hope I’m wrong and Matt will take a pay cut and stay. But if he’s any kind of fierce competitor, i bet he looks to play elsewhere if someone will pay him, to.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Tanny had 16 Professional starts too when Moore signed. I think you could be right about him maybe not getting much action from the rest of the league..but I do distinctly remember that just before he signed he was the top remaining FA QB. Possible thats not very valuable if all the other teams are set though.

  43. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Free agent OG Mike Iupati is expected to reach the open market.
Iupati’s return to San Francisco “remains a possibility,” per CSN Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco, but the 49ers appear willing to let the open market set Iupati’s value. Iupati heads a free agent interior offensive line class that includes Orlando Franklin, Rodney Hudson, Stefen Wisniewski, and Clint Boling.

The revamping of the WR position continues and I’m even more convinced now that we re-sign Clay.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Sure hope so.. No guarantees this time of year. If we get rid of Wallace as well we’ll be left with 1 WR on the roster that contributed meaningfully last year…that makes me nervous.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Silly Tim says:

I don’t think Hartline and Gibson will be overly difficult to replace. We could also add a solid WR from FA who won’t cost a lot.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

I think I value them more than you do, but it’s not the specific names that worry me, it’s the wholesale nature that looks more like a rebuild than a re-tool that worries me.

  48. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

    Mike E, I’m gaga for Boling…lol. I don’t know why, I just think he’d be a good fit and is only 25-26yo.

  49. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Well, I knew this was coming on our WR’s, surely they have to keep Wallace now. It seems they tried to trade him, no one bit the line well enough, so time to purge the other WR’s.

We’ll likely see a dbl up on drafting of WR’s.
Sucks that other teams will now know this, hurts draft day trades a bit.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Silly Tim says:

It’s way too early to speculate how this effects the draft. We could also address WR in FA.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Agreed, I also make no assumptions that Wallace is staying. I still think he’s going. Look at the cap numbers to see who’s next. LBs up next as far as position groups.

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Dez Bryant. Him & Wallace will go well together. Philbin will love it. 😉

  50. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Jahn, you think you’re nervous, how do you think Tannehill feels now…lol

  51. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

  52. Tim Knight's avatar Silly Tim says:

Jahn, we’ve been discussing that Hartline and Gibson could be released for months. Now it’s a reality so maybe that makes it feel a little weird.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

I always though Hartline would stay for a pay cut. I never honestly thought both Hartline and Gibson would be cut, but I always knew 2 of the top 4 could end up going. Could be GDP is right and Wallace stays at this point. But if he goes, what I’m saying is a stark fact: Only 1 remaining contributing WR from 2014 will still be on the roster, and 2014 was a year of great progress for Tannehill.

You don’t have to be worried, but I’m concerned for Tannehill’s sake. Hope they know what they’re doing.

    ——————————————–
He and McKinney have about the same issue IMO, both of them take bad angles to the play a lot fo time and are a little out of positon and they can over pursue a bit. Having said that, McKinney still my fav, kinda same reason you like Anthony, cant teach his size and athletic ability combinations. He is better in both regards than Anthony, but as i have said before Anthony has definately moved up on my list and offers potential as a fallback option. Im not sure i like him better than Kendricks or Perryman, i do like him better than Dawson, for us, and i have him on about equal footing with Wilson.

  54. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I kinda figured Hartline would be restructured. I’m still surprised he was willing to restructure but was cut anyway.

    • D's avatar D says:

In my mock offseason thing, which i guess now i wont submit since part of it is invalid, i had Hartline restructuring and Gibson being cut.

      • D's avatar D says:

The WR’s i had like this Wallace – traded, Hartline – restructured, Gibson cut. Still got one chance to be 67% correct.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Me too. There’s still a chance he comes back. It’s happened many times before where a team values a guy much less then the player values himself, and the market proves the team was right, so the player goes back and signs a reduced contract.

But yeah…surprised to read that for sure.

  55. D's avatar D says:

Hazel was one of my favorite late round selections we had last year, i really like him and think he will contribute next year. I see him more of a replacement for Matthews, as i am pretty sure Matthews last until his rookie contract runs out at the end of this next season.

  56. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

  57. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I’ve been steady in saying since day one to keep Wallace 1 more year, draft his eventual replacements, they’ll get experience playing in the vacated spots left by Hartline & Gibson, mixed with Matthews.
Then dump Wallace’s diva ass in 2016.

    • D's avatar D says:

I think this year is as good as any, i definitely dont want the new receivers to come in and learn from him.

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I wouldn’t worry about that…they’ll know what trouble he’s got himself into. It’s O’Keefe’s job to coach them up.

  58. Tim Knight's avatar Silly Tim says:

Jahn, I’ve debated M13 about Kendricks and I’m concerned about his size in the middle. If he does play inside, you better keep him clean or he’s going to get washed out often. I think he’s a better fit at WOLB.

    • D's avatar D says:

Kinda agree with this, he has pretty good instincts at MLB, which is a big deal, but i do think some of the flaws i have seen with him will be exploited with NFL level OL on him, he doesnt disengage off blocks well at all.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Silly Tim says:

        That’s a big problem inside.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

So disagree. I think you watched looking for that and suffer from confirmation bias. 🙂

Lineman rarely get their hands on him. Zach like in that aspect, but a lot of that will depend on the DTs in front of him too.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Sorry, I watched him every week. He’s not going to get washed out. He has the best instincts of any LB in the draft. If he goes to a 3/4 team I’d share some of your concerns, but I think he’s a perfect natural fit in a traditional 4/3 defense.

Just opinion of course, but I’m trusting my eyes on this guy because unlike others I’ve watched him a LOT.

  59. D's avatar D says:

If reports are correct and they are already planning for 2016, then Wallace might as well be gone now, because he would be in 2016 anyways lol.

Probably safest bet is to take the guy out of the top 5 who seems the most driven to be great, id say for me thats about how i would pick between the group, by who interviewed the best.

NBC Washington’s Dianna Marie Russini reports the Redskins have “strong interest” in free agent OG Mike Iupati.
Redskins coach Jay Gruden has been transitioning away from smaller, athletic zone linemen to large power blockers for the last year and a half. Iupati is a 6-foot-5, 330-pound road grader whom new Redskins GM Scot McCloughan drafted in San Francisco. Iupati would be a natural fit in D.C. Per Russini, the Redskins can expect competition for Iupati’s services from the Buccaneers.

    • D's avatar D says:

After you started talkign him up i went back and looked into him. I actually think you are right, best bang for the buck OG in FA for us. Iupati is by far the most talented in this FA, but he is also a mauler type, who is going to be kinda expensive. You won me over GDP.

  63. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Borland kicked some serious ass last year, and he’s undersized, although he likely has about 15 pounds on Kendricks. I really wanted him on our team.

  64. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    GDP

I hear ya. I love Iupati, but I wondered myself whether he’s actually a good fit in our ZBS. Sometimes I think talent is talent, in other words, I’d rather have a really good player that maybe isn’t quite as fast and nimble, than a nimble guy who gets run over. lol

Wake won’t take a pay cut. Pass rush is too high demand. They also won’t cut him and he knows it. So the only “restructure” they give him would be risking the cap in future years by pushing cap hit down the pike. The piper always gets paid.
    ————————————–
In my scenario i only had him taking a small cut. I asked Hartline to take a little bit bigger one and Misi’s wasnt a big one either, i think for Wake he would restructure if he knew it was best for the team overall, he is a high character guy who just wants to keep playing for the team that brought him back, i feel confident he would play ball within reason.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Maybe, I don’t see him taking any kind of a cut, just shifting money from non-guaranteed to guaranteed, which compromises later years of cap space. “Small pay cuts” never come without more guarantees, and the idea it seems this year is to go leaner on the Cap, not shift liability to 3 years down the road, especially on a player at Wakes age.

For the record, I like Kendricks, just not at MLB.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Honest question, I thought 3/4 ILBs typically needed to be BIGGER than 4/3 MLBs. Am I wrong?

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Or maybe you’re saying WLB? I’m confusing your comment above about Borland maybe. See question up there.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Silly Tim says:

Borland didn’t prove he can play MLB in a 4-3, he was a 3-4 ILB in SF.

Kendricks is 6-0 230 and I’m concerned about his size in the middle. Zach was a rare breed, not typical. To me the most important thing for a 4-3 MLB is instincts and range, but having some size to handle blocks would also be good. That’s why I said of he does play inside they better keep him clean. Bowens and Gardener did that for Zach.

Gibson was 10th on the savings list. Hartline was 11th. Guess who’s 12th?

    Brandon Fields.
    ————————————–
For sake of not stirring a certain someones wrath i havent gone there, though i have thrown a couple mocks out there with Kyle Christie mocked to us in the 7th round as a punter prospect who could replace him. I hate the idea of it though, because fields has given 0 reason other than his pay to even entertain the thought. He is still a highly productive player.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Yeah, but when you’re a punter, Pay is the only reason they need. The dropoff between a HOFer and a college free agent in only smaller at the PK position.

I know Stanger likes him, but was he the best Punter in football last year? Last several years? Because he’s being paid like it, and then you have to ask yourself, do you really want your team to be the one paying the best punter in the league, or do you leave Shane Lechler to the Raiders and settle on a more middle of the road guy.

  69. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Well, we still got our big WR Micheal Preston 6’5 213 in his 2nd year from college powerhouse Heidelberg.

    • D's avatar D says:

  72. D's avatar D says:

Mike Talent is talent, but if your asking a guy to do zone blocking shifts and he isnt quick enough to do them, then you got a guy who is going to get by on talent not excel at the position. Boling i think is a better fit and still has considerable talent. I mean its not like he’s the 23 best OG in FA, he’s considered like the 4th best.

  73. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Cardinals released DE Darnell Dockett.
Dockett was not amenable to a pay cut after missing all of 2014 with a torn ACL. He recently tweeted his displeasure with renegotiation talks. Dockett turns 34 in May and has lost most of his early-career pass-rush ability, though he remained a strong run defender the last time he played. Cutting Dockett frees up $6.8 million in salary cap space. GM Steve Keim said in a statement Friday that the Cardinals want Dockett back at a cheaper price.

Shorts would be someone id be really interested in but id bet money NE throws some good money his way. Royal was someone i failed to mention but feel similarly about, but i think SD is going to re-sign him, i cant see them losing a guy who is both a really good receiver for them and a solid return specialist.

  85. D's avatar D says:

Matthews to me was always Hartline’s replacment as long as he continued to develop. Hazel is his replacement lol. Landry replaced Gibson, we need a guy who can who is like Landry but with speed, like Dorsett, Diggs, etc. someone that can play fast in space but stretch the field occasionally and then a bigger receiver for RZ. We can draft these guys next year and have a really promising unit.

  86. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I think we are a virtual lock that we re-sign Clay after both of these cuts. There is no way we can cut Hartline and Gibson and let Clay walk in FA, combined with the fact that Wallace may not be here next year (which I still think that he will be). That would be asking too much of Tannehill.

I still don’t think he’s eligible based on my reading. He’s way beyond eligible:
“Each team can sign a maximum of two players with no more than two accrued seasons. Original Matthews story*

    ### The Dolphins’ depth at receiver has caused some unhappiness. A team source said Rishard Matthews asked for a trade before the regular season started, but the Dolphins declined. Matthews has now accepted his situation and is no longer asking for a trade.

The Dolphins’ desire to play Matthews some, and rookie Jarvis Landry a lot, has resulted in Brandon Gibson’s snaps sliding from 41 per game last season to 31, and he has been targeted only five times. Gibson acknowledged he would get more playing time elsewhere but said he won’t complain.
