Cornering the Market

So far, on the defensive side of the ball, I’ve looked at the safety prospects and linebacker prospects. Now, it’s time to take a look at the cornerbacks. Brent Grimes, as far as I’m concerned, is the the only Miami Dolphins CB you can pencil in as a starter. Everyone else, and I do mean E-V-E-R-Y-O-N-E, is a question mark.

This draft seems to be deep at CB, but not top heavy. There are a couple of guys that are potential 1st RD picks, but none that are can’t miss talents.

Let’s take a look at this years CB prospects!

Trae Waynes

Trae Waynes CB – Michigan St. 6’0” 186

Before the combine, Waynes was considered as possibly the first CB to come off the board. After the combine, he solidified his status. Waynes ran a blistering 4.31 in the 40, and put up an impressive 19 reps on the bench.

His last season at Michigan St., Waynes had 3 INT’s along with 8 passes defensed, 1 sack, and 46 tackles, 34 solo.

Waynes can play in any scheme, but he would likely excel in a press scheme, where his size and strength would allow him to bump the receiver off his route. He is a very good cover corner who can stay with any receiver. One thing at the combine that concerns me was his poor cone and 20 YD shuttle scores, 7.06 in the cones, and 4.39 in the shuttle shows poor agility and body control.

NFL.com has Waynes as the #1 CB and rated at 6.27

NFL Comparison – Antonio Cromartie (Waynes, at the moment, has no kids)

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Jalen Collins

Jalen Collins CB – LSU 6’1” 203

While Collins doesn’t have the speed of Waynes, he’s a very good CB in his own right. Collins didn’t fly at the combine, he ran a 4.48, which is fine for an NFL CB. Just to go back to the shuttle, Collins did the shuttle in 6.77, and was the top performer. He was a little better than Waynes in 20 YD shuttle at 4.27, which shows the ability to change directions quickly.

Collins is also leaving as a Junior, and finished his last season with 1 INT, 9 passes defensed, 38 tackles, 28 solo.

Collins only has 10 career starts, so that leaves him without a real body of work to look at. Teams are going to have to project his value. He has the size most teams are looking for. NFL.com has Collins as #2 for CB’s, and has him rated at 6.18.

Ronald Darby

Ronald Darby CB – Florida St. 5’11” 193

Darby performed well at the combine, running a sub 4.4 40 (4.38), and also showed off his hops with a 41.5” vertical.

Darby also left college as a Junior. His last season at Florida St., Darby had no INT’s, 4 passes defensed, 1 FF, and 43 tackles, 28 solo.

Darby is a former HS track star. He has very good body control. Darby has 2 years of experience playing CB, but only 2 INT’s in that time. Also a good cover corner, but hasn’t shown that he’s a playmaker or ballhawk.

NFL.com has Darby rated #3 with a 5.87 rating.

NFL comparison – Johnathan Joseph

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Kevin Johnson

Kevin Johnson CB – Wake Forest 6’0” 188

Johnson is rated as #4 by NFL.com. Johnson is the first CB that we’re looking at that has played  all 4 seasons in college. As a Senior, Johnson had 1 INT, 6 passes defensed, 44 tackles, 32 solo. In 4 years, Johnson had 7 total INT’s, with 3 both as a Sophomore and Junior.

Johnson didn’t impress at the combine with his 40 time, just a decent 4.52, but he showed his athletic ability with a 130” broad jump, a 41.5” vertical, an impressive 6.79 cone, and a blazing fast 3.89 20 YD shuttle. While not top end speed fast, he plays fast, and has great agility, acceleration and recovery speed.

Very good cover man, excellent balance, and a good tackler who is willing to support the run. Can play in a press or zone scheme. Plays stronger than he looks.

NFL.com has Johnson rated #4 at 5.86.

NFL comparison – Sam Shields

Marcus Peters

Marcus Peters CB – Washington 6’0” 197

Marcus Peters is another Junior leaving college for the NFL. In his last season at Washington, Peters played in 9 games last season, but he was suspended for 1 game after throwing a sideline tantrum, and then later dismissed for run ins with the coaches. Sounds like a perfect fit with ol’ Joe, eh? In his 9 games, Peters came down with 3 INT’s, 7 passed defensed, 1 INT for a TD, and 1 FF. In his 3 year career, minus a few games his last season, Peters had a total of 11 INT’s, pretty impressive.

The combine didn’t do Peters any favors except for his 17 reps on the bench. He ran a 4.53, which is borderline acceptable for a CB. He’s a player though, and has good production. Physical player who likes to intimidate (even his coaches!)

NFL.com has Peters ranked #5 with a 5.82 rating

NFL comparison – Aqib Talib

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

PJ Williams

PJ Williams CB – Florida St. 6’0” 194

Williams is the CB on the other side of the field with Ronald Darby at Florida St. That’s a talented secondary right there. Unlike Darby though, PJ Williams didn’t have a great combine. He ran a 4.57, which may hurt his chances as a starting CB. He did show athleticism with a 132” broad jump, and a 40” vertical.

Williams is also leaving FLA St. as a Junior. In his last season, Williams had 1 INT, 10 passes defensed, 1 FF, 1 sack, and 74 tackles, 52 solo.

Williams is ranked #6 on NFL.com with a 5.8 rating

Physical and competitive player who likes to press. Stays physical down the field, which could be a problem in the NFL, where hands-on is frowned upon. Despite his lack of top end speed, Williams is a very good cover corner.

NFL comparison – Stephon Gilmore

Senquez Golson

Senquez Golson CB – Ole Miss 5’9” 176

This “mighty-mite” is one of my favorites, probably because he’s often compared to our own Brent Grimes. Ultra-competitive player, who is also a very productive player. A 4year starter at Mississippi, Golson in his Senior year snared 10 INT’s, 1 returned for a TD, had 8 passes defensed, 0.5 sacks, and 43 tackles, 33 solo.

CB with excellent ball skills (just like Grimes). Golson performed well at the combine, just didn’t stand out in any category, but well in all of them. He ran s 4.46, put up 15 reps, and a good 6.81 cone drill. He;’s a very good athlete, with a non-stop motor. He played mostly zone coverage, so he may need to prove he can play press as well, although not here in MIA.

Golson was rated #7 by NFL.com with a 5.73

NFL comparison – I TOLD YA, Brent Grimes!

D'Joun Smith

D’Joun Smith CB – FAU 5’10” 187

I’m skipping around now (Well, not skipping around the house, just going out of order as far as rankings are concerned)

Smith is a very good athlete, and showed well at the combine. He didn’t kill any one category, but he did well across the board. He ran a 4.45, 18 reps on the bench, and a 6.96 cone drill.

Smith leaves FAU as a Senior. In his last season at FAU, Smith had 1 INT, (returned for a TD) 8 passes defensed, 1 FF, and 53 tackles, 32 solo. He had a great Junior season, with 7 INT’s, 13 passes defensed, 2 FF’s and a TD. The kid is a very competitive player, very spunky. Thing is, he didn’t face a high level of competition at FAU.

NFL.com has Smith rated at 5.61

NFL comparison – Ross Cockrell

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Ifo Ekpre-Olomu

Ifo Ekpre-Olomu CB – Oregon 5’9” 192

Ekpre-Olomu was unable to perform at the combine, he is coming off a knee injury he sustained in preparation for the the playoff game against Florida St.

Ekpre-Olomu was a 4 YR starter at Oregon. He finished his Senior year with 2 INT’s, 9 passes defensed, 1 FF and 63 tackles, 43 solo.

Very fluid athlete with loose hips that can change direction well. Plays tough, and has good ball skills. The knee injury is a concern, so that alone will drop him some in the draft. Still, he has potential to be a great CB.

NFL.com has Ekpre-Olomu rated at 5.57

NFL comparison – Alterraun Verner

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Charles Gaines

Charles Gaines CB – Louisville 5’10” 180

Gaines left Louisville as a Junior. In his last season, he had 2 INT’s, 10 passes defensed, 1 FF, 1 sack, and 36 tackles, 31 solo. In his Sophomore year, Gaines had 5 INT’s (1 returned for a TD). He was a WR when he came to Louisville, and was converted to a CB. This gives him somewhat of an advantage in coverage. Mirrors very well.

Gaines ran a 4.45 at the combine, which is pretty good. He didn’t show particularly well in any other category at the combine.

NFL.com has Gaines rated at 5.56

NFL comparison – Patrick Robinson

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Quinten Rollins

Quinten Rollins CB – Miami (Ohio) 5’11” 195

Interesting prospect who played basketball for 3 years, and then played football as a Senior at Miami of Ohio. He made an easy transition to football, and his basketball skills served him well as a CB. In his one and only season, Rollins had 7 INT’s (1 returned for a TD), 9 passes defensed, 1 FF, and 72 tackles, 53 solo.

Rollins, despite his excellent season will be an NFL project, and likely won’t be a starter right away. He also ran a 4.57 at the combine, which says he likely won’t be on the outside, but could possibly be a fit in the slot.

NFL.com has Rollins rated at a 5.71 (Most likely on potential)

NFL comparison – Perrish Cox

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCHLLwLY7fs

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Lorenzo Doss

Lorenzo Doss CB – Tulane 5’10” 182

3 year starter at Tulane. Left Tulane as a Junior. In his last season, Doss had 3 INT’s, 9 passes defensed, 1 sack, and 48 tackles, 36 solo. In Doss’s Sophomore season, he had 7 INT’s, and 4 in his Freshman year.

Doss wasn’t impressive at the combine, running a decent 4.5 40, only putting up 9 reps at the bench, and a below average 33.5” vertical, and also did poorly in the cone drills at 7.20. Still, Doss is a player with good ball skills, and that will get him drafted.

NFL.com has Doss rated at 5.65

NFL comparison – Buster Skrine

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

There are other CB’s who may be in the picture, but there are only so many hours in the day. I think we’ll likely see one of the guys above, or maybe 2 on our team. We need CB’s, one because I’m not sure either Jamar Taylor or Will Davis can stay healthy enough to actually play an entire season, and Brent Grimes is going to be 32 by the time the season starts.

If there are any guys you feel should have been here, bring them up on the blog, and give us some info!

Enjoy!

I don’t want Suh on the team. I don’t care how good he is. From what i’ve seen of him on the field, I think he a giant douche just looking to injure other players. I wouldn’t want that kind of attitude on my team. 8-8 or not, Fuck Suh.

  2. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

OK, so I showered, got all dolled up, ready to go to work since I hadn’t heard anything, and then I got the text that we’re closing all of our offices. Definitely the right call, just wish it came an hour or so sooner, so I could have slept. I find it nearly impossible to go back to sleep after showering. In any case, happy to be able to relax today, although I will have shovel out later, but I would have to do that anyway.

Hope all of you in the southern areas like Herd and Try, and anyone else stay safe, and don’t have to work as well.

  3. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Dave – Suh IS a douche, but he’s a very good football player. I don’t really believe for a second though that we’re really trying to get him though. It’s interesting to hear about it, but I doubt it happens.

  4. TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

    Morning Mike,
I shoveled for a half hour, was getting nowhere. My neighbor’s car was stuck in the driveway, and her car is higher off the ground than mine, so I’m just gonna wait until the snow stops and go back to it. I’d say at least a foot on the ground here. About .5 hour south there are some with 20″+.

  5. ditmcodave's avatar ditmcodave says:

Mike, I know he is an awesome football player. One of the best right now even. I just don’t like the attitude. I wouldn’t want James Harrison on my team either for mainly the same reason. I guess that type of play is ok if you are “elite”.

  6. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Dave

Maybe we have different points of view ont he subject but I like my football players mean and willin g to eat raw meat (except pork)

Do you think Dick Butkus was a nice guy?

Suh is a badass and a throwback to the grat defenders that built the NFL
Albeit being a throwback comes at the expense of pissing of the commissioner

The first time I saw Suh (at nebraska) I thought I’ve nver seen a more dominant defensive player. he is a special player and some one you can build around

And if there is one team that desveres to face a guy that will eat your face is the New England Patriots – I can;t wait to see Suh step on brady’s deflated balls!

If the NFl won;t do anything to stop these cheaters our monster DT will!!!
    OINK!!!

…of course we have to sign him first…

    • ditmcodave's avatar ditmcodave says:

So you want to beat the cheaters with another cheater. I’ll stick with hockey if that’s what nfl is turning into. Or turning back to.

    Great piece Mike

For a second I thought you were going to skip Ifooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
    (blowing in a conch)
    Ifooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

but I see you mentioned him

I think maybe it would be wise for us to look at DB in the 3rd and 4th round
I think some of the guys you can get there can be starters eventually –

a cheap vet int he interim would not be a bad idea

We need interior D-line help and we we have a shot at the absolute best DT in the league I say bring him on.
And since we do play in J-ville this year it would be nine games played in the State Income tax free State of Florida.

  11. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

    Great – extensive – job Mike .
If we could get Darby in the 3rd that to me would be the steal of the draft. The dude hits, and man can he run.

  12. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I also like Gaines and Senquez a lot on this list
    smaller scrappy guys

I don;t think we need a CB with length in our zone scheme
So let the other NFL teams reach for the next Sean Smith
we can get our guys a little later

CB is an area which its not usnual to get a steal a little later for whatever reason
Playign CB at a high level is more skill than intangibles IMO and its a little harder to measure than a lot of other positions in terms of prospects

but I expect rookie CBs to be exploited no matter where you take them

    Anyway
my point is I don;t want to take a CB early
The class does not really appear to have any elite prospects
but 2nd, 3rd or 4th round…that might be a good place to get one
and maybe even a day 3 pick as well (as the 2nd DB we take int eh draft)

I have the 2nd round cirlced to address LB – but that of course3 means nothing – I just suspect that is someweehre we look int he 2nd

  13. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Couple of others CBs worth a look in addition to the extensice list Mike included

    Quinten Rollins (Miami of Ohio)
    Ladarius Ginter (the Real Miami)
    The jumper Byron Jones (UCONN)
    The other Kevin white (TCU)
Quandre Diggs (Texas) The odds of drafting a guy named Diggs in this draft are at 2%
The 2nd coming of Sean Smith Eric Rowe (Utah)
    Doran Grant (Ohio State)

  14. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I happened to notice that CBS dropped my guy Ifoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
    (blowing in a conch)
    Ifoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
    to the 3rd-4th round

I’m sure this is bc of the injury
Ifo would be a great fit for us
If we can get Ifo in the 3rd or even the 4th round I would agree to wear pants for 1 week

But better be on the lookout for the Phildephia Ducks, I bet they are also looking to draft Ifo
This guy can be a stud and Chip Kelly knows it

  15. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

A good Corner from UCF not mentioned is Jacoby Glenn a certified Hawk. He’s coming out early and is raw but very talented.

  16. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Piggy – Sorry you had to come back to the storm bud. It does look kinda nice though, until I have to get my ass out there to shovel it!

I did include Quinten Rollins, but I left out Kevin White after he ran a 4.63 at the combine. Maybe if he really improves at his pro day, I’ll take another look, but a 5’9″ 183 lb CB who can’t run a sub 4.60 doesn’t do it for me. Maybe as a nickel corner, or maybe safety, but he’d have to put on weight to play S.

  17. TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

    Mike, Piggy,
I think the record for a season or a year is around 41″. Not sure if we have had that much this time around. The last 2 storms have given us at least 2′, which is not normal.
It sucks to leave the beach and fly back into winter Piggy. I have seen the 7 day forecast and it shows 40’s and 50’s. My hope is for 60’s at least on St Patrick’s Day (with no rain, please!), which is a big day in this household.

  18. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Thanks Son, Piggy

  19. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Son

Glenn also ran poorly at the combine, a 4.64. I know sometimes guys play faster than the numbers bear out, but a 4.6 + doesn’t cut it as a perimeter CB.

WOW I ALREADY LIKE a day off during the week. Slept in until 6:45 before walking the dogs. Did NOT get up to face LOUSY WEATHER. Yesterday, the high in Tampa was 80; the low 65. More of the same today for my day off. And NOT a state or local income tax to be seen anywhere in the Sunshine State where you actually get to KEEP a lot more of your earned income so you can use it for things like Dolphins season tickets. –Later today I’ll call in to be told WHICH inferior tickets I’ll be allowed to buy at Sun-Baked Stadium out in the open sun. Then they’ll tell me how many hoops to jump thru to buy a parking pass, which USED TO be part of your season ticket package. As I said last night, virtually all who renew their tickets will get inferior seat locations for the upcoming season because ALL the seats on Miami’s side in the lower deck between the 30’s HAVE BEEN REMOVED to make room for Steve Ross’s hyper-expensive exclusive seats that will sel for a MINIMUM of $1,000 to $2,000 per seat PER GAME. –Loyal Dolfans who used to occupy those choice seats are being booted out to far less choice locations. And this has a “spill over” effect for those currently in less choice seating or upstairs seating. My brother-in-law, who’s missede only 3 home games in 49 seasons, was bumped from the 40 yard line upstairs to the 30!! –LOyal long term Dolfans ARE PISSED-OFF ALREADY!!! –AND I’m sure by this afternoon, I’LL BE PISSED-OFF, TOO!! Remember, THIS SEASON, virtually NO SEATS will be in the shade because the canopy project doesn’t start until AFTER the current season. And, speaking of the canopy, does ANYBODY think it will survive a category 3 or 4 hurricane?? —FYI, Marlins Stadium was specially constructed swo that it WILL SURVIVE a category 3 or 4 hurricane. -That’s because Marlins Park is a totallyenclosed air conditioned stadium whereas Ross’s “canopy park” remains wide open to the elements and can NOT be secured for a cat 3-4 cane!!

As for the stadium and seats, the Giants and Jets did the same thing to their fans when they built the new stadium and forced their loyal season ticket holders to buy PSLs at absurd prices just so they can continue to buy their seats. Sports is big business now and loyalty isn’t really part of the equation anymore.

      • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

TIM; A survey of season ticket holders during the Huizenga era (when we had playoff quality teams several years) indicated that 65% of current season ticket holders would NOT renew if a seat license of over $1,000 was required. I’m REAL SURE ROSS has seen those numbers. His decision NOT to go with a seat license was strictly a BOTTOM LINE decision, NOT a good will gesture.

But the reality is he doesn’t make the bills as a team much better than they were with Spiller/Jackson

Hey are parting ways with Spiller and they essentially replaced him
And now McCoy wants nothing to do with the Bills

The idea that the Bills are front runner for Iupati is laughable

No one wants to play in buffalo
Can some one give me an UFA, other than Mario Williams that had Buffalo as a front runner?
Williams was the highest paid defender when he signed there
So throw it out as reasoning
I doubt The Bills offer more for Iupati than anyone else w

    It’s still Buffalo
And Rex Ryan is. OT an offensive I’ve player’s dream to play for

The Bills have little draft picks
So they have to make their impact this offseason through trades and signings

And so far, bc McCoy may threaten I hold out even though he is under contract, they downgraded by making the spiller McCoy switch

If McCoy plays for them from game 1, even of he gets hurt, I think it becomes an upgrade but that is a slight upgrade
There is only so much more offense McCoy can get them that what they were getting out of their RBs

  45. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Piggy:
The stigma of players not wanting to play in Buffalo is changing. Ryan is well known as a players coach who players love to play for. They have a new owner, he has committed to building a new stadium and they have a significant amount of talent on the team. The Bills will draw significant interest in players during FA.

  46. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    D

Yeah, Hulk can mess with Suh too. I’ll just stick with my line that I don’t really believe we’re heavily pursuing him.

  47. D's avatar D says:

I think you have to take into consideration that Brady, Manning, and Rodgers generally get rid of the ball extremely quick, so inside pass rush wouldn’t be as effective against them. You would have to turn your eyes towards their secondary as the reason his sack numbers weren’t great, how many hurries did he have? That would be a important stat because it would show you he was still beating the blockers, even if Brady did get the ball off. Our secondary, is better overall than the Lions’ but we would need better play out of the remaining ones to where Suh had time to get to him. I will say i feel he would have for sure made a difference in the Broncos game because our coverage was pretty decent, we just had 0 pressure on him.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Inside pass rush is actually the best way to go after a Brady or a Manning. That is the quickest route to the QB. That is traditionally where both of them have struggled is vs a good interior rush. That said I don’t know if it is worth 1/6th of your cap space to get a great interior rusher.

      • D's avatar D says:

See below, for those guys ya have to have at least a good balance of coverage and pressure, so yeah its one of the more important places, as it gets you more pressure than your general outside rush. Suh is dominant there, and with Wake and Vernon i think we would take a BIG jump in our sack numbers

  48. D's avatar D says:

To see how our defense would be better you have to look at what Suh would bring.

First, he would bring better run support, taking away or limiting one factor of an offense, this allows the defense to key on the other phase more.

LB’s coverage would be improves as they wouldn’t have to key so strongly on run support.

Secondary, specifically safeties could play a little deeper, to support the CBs, or key on TE’s to help the LBers, making them both more effective.

Increased coverage from extra safety support would increase the time the QB holds on to the ball to pick apart the defense, which in turn give more time for the pass rush to be effective, so DE’s and DT’s are better.

Him being very good pass rush wise, then flips everything back in the opposite direction meaning those throws would be hurried, which means more opportunities for picks.

The DT position is HIGHLY important and if you can get a guy who is both proficient at run support and pass rush, that’s a valuable piece to consider.

Its been said many time OL is lifeblood of the Offense, and the entire offense performs better if the OL does. DL is the same thing to the defense these days. It use to be DE’s were considered more important kind way that OT’s use to be the more important factors, but now you should easily be able to see the shift to DT’s and OG’s being at least on equal footing.

    • D's avatar D says:

Ill reply here to you Ken, is it worth it. Again, thats what the experts have to determine. I can see it being worth it, and i can see the benefit of using the 17 mil to sign 2-3 other people. You could essentially get Knighton and Iupati for what it would take to get Suh, just have to determine if your getting more from a combination of those two than you get for him alone. Some would say yes we would, other no. Experts will be ones closest to that answer, so we just have to wait and see which they think it is. Keep in mind we probably still can sing a couple more guys even after getting Suh if thats the way we go, so i wouldnt think of it as all eggs in one basket, just a really big egg that takes up most the room lol.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      Agreed on all points

Honestly I think Suh is a generational type player

      When I say elite
I don’t think it says it all

      I think Iupati is elite
      But not like Suh

We are talking about a special player you can build around that will change everything about the team

  49. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Kong

Suh is the most dominant defensive player in the NFL IMO
He can only help is against the cheats

I think our DTs were a liability last year
Bottom line is it’s an upgrade

There are no guarantees we beat the cheats
But I look forward to have a DL give Brady fits
And the personel we add is the best way to go about doing it

Suh helps wake and Vernon instantly
And maybe, just maybe, he helps take Jordan to a different level

If the Suh signing happens it’s, IMO, the one thing we can do this offseason that is a difference maker In 2015

The continued progression if Tanny, improving OL and WRs will also help
But getting an elite DT – the best in THe NFL is a something that cannot be understated

    Suh is a difference maker

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Suh is the best 4-3 DT in the NFL but I just don’t see him as that big a difference maker. The Lions D continues to have it’s share of problems with Suh. They have yet to win a playoff game with Suh and the Lions have a better O than we do. So I don’t see the empirical data that Suh would be worth that kind of investment. Is he a great player? Yes. Would we be a better D with him? Yes. Would the team be better? Not so sure if we can’t upgrade the OL and WRs as a result of having too much money tied up in Suh.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

That is over 7 a season from a DT

When he was drafted – Kiper called him maybe the most dominate DT he has seen in 33 years

This is one of those rare players that dominated in college and the pros

Guess how many games Suh missed in his career?
    2

    He is extremely durable

You guys challenging how good he is are completely missing it

Sorry, an exaggeration on my part- there have been players who have made the probowl who were not necessarily the best or most deserving.

  53. TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

Suh is currently reaching the legendary status here which, up until now, was reserved for Matt Roth. I agree with you Ken- Suh is not as productive or disruptive and therefore not worth the same type of contract as Watts, who also is not likely to put his team in a bad situation by committing a stupid foul that might jeopardize his ability to play in a playoff game; and I agree with you Piggy; contrary to the big green fellow’s sense the sky is falling, I am not sold that all of a sudden Buffalo is the destination players are going to flock to because of Dr. Footlove. As a matter of fact, Mr. McCoy has stated he had no desire to go there.

  54. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Come on you guys know and follow football more than most fans so stop trying to compare a DT to a DE, you’re better than that.
Suh is almost without question the best interior Dline player in the league and is a guy teams have to spend a lot of time preparing for. Odrick moving around on the line got one sack, Suh got 8 from his inside position.

    • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

What Ken said below. My comparison is strictly for financial comparison. And don’t forget, watts gets double teamed and schemed against, too.

  55. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I am not challenging how good Suh is. What I am challenging is whether or not he is worth nearly 1/6th of our salary cap. Does that make us a better team? My thought is what is likely to make a bigger difference is to bolster the OL and WR positions. Put our offense in a better place to keep the ball and score which in turn will help our D more than 1 player no matter how great the player is.

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

There’s a glimmer factor with Suh, he will put asses into Ross’ new blue seats, get national attention, fortify our Dline which is most important and he’ll get us into the conversation about who is expected to go to the playoffs. He single-handedly could change the national perception of our team, and that grows exponentially when we start winning. There’s a cost to all of that.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

We have heard that before too when we signed Wallace and Albert. We landed the prize FA 2 years in a row to huge contracts. The fans still don’t come and we still have not made the playoffs. I think we have a better chance to be a winning team if we build the OL and give Tannehill weapons at WR. If we start winning then fans might start coming.

      • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

You know as well as I do that Suh has a MUCH higher profile than Wallace or Albert. Not even close its apples to oranges in that regard. And instead of good NFL quality we’d be getting the very top shelf of what the league has to offer.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

        Son:
I still think it doesn’t help our team as much as building the OL and WR positions. Not sure how we can do both and extend Tannehill’s contract.

    Nice evaluations Mike E.

And could not agree with this more: “We need CB’s, one because I’m not sure either Jamar Taylor or Will Davis can stay healthy enough to actually play an entire season.” Plus in the passing age I think you need four solid cover guys, even if one can be a safety. Otherwise, you are one injury away from a hole in the nickel.

At the same time, while I want us to get a CB, I’m seeing a FA or a 2nd-4th guy. Don’t want the big money guy and don’t see anyone first pick worthy.

  57. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

      • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

I think it is fair to compare them when talking about $100mil+ contracts on the defensive side of the ball, particularly in today’s nfl, where defense had been marginalized to the extent that if you whisper in the qb’s ear it’s a 15 yard penalty. Better to spend it on multiple players, or elite offensive talent (i.e., qb).

  70. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Piggy, how can you say that Suh is better than JJ Watt…WOW?
First of all, two different positions, but based on sheer game changing production, Watt is dominant. He causes the coveted TO’s, plus now he’s catching TD’s in the redzone too.
Let me know when Suh starts doing that ok? 😉

Seems the real Q is whether he was signed to be the 3rd or 4th T option. Big difference btwn the two. Maybe the number on the contract will indicate more.

  73. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    GDP
Do you thik wallace has been an elite player or earned his contract?
Why are you making an argument that you won’t support?
You know what wallace is. And there are many WRs in the NFl better than him, but we pay him like he is the best, which he is not.

You don;t know if that if we drafted a player like Deandre Hopkins instead of that silly contract we gave wallace he would have produced as much or put up big stats numbers

Don;t give me stats as a reason to call some one elite
Put some one in his place and see if they produce as much

Albert was great for us until he was injured
I’m sure he wasn;t elite while he was on IR
You tell me how some one accomplishes being elite while they were injured?
Our OL fell apart without Albert – but he was very good for us when he was healthy
And a healthy Albert is soemthing might have that sperates us fromt he rest of the league

  74. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I can say Tom brady is better than Mike wallace even though one is a WR and one is a QB right?

    I didn’t say Suh was a better 4-3 DT than watta a 3-4 DE

Play for play I think Suh wreaks more havoc than Watt
I think Suh wreaks more havoc than wake and they play different positions too

Its irrelevnt that they play different positions if I didn;t say Suh is a better DT than Watt ism which is not what I said

Only one defensive player wins DPOY
Only one (usually offensive) player win MVP
You are sayign one is better than the other when one wins aren;t you?

  75. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Let’s just put it this way, I’m pretty sure the front office (like I am) is thinking about the addition of Suh (cost associated) and also the subtraction of Wake (maybe after next season).

    Trypod

In terms of a guy being worth the $$$

I think in the modern day NFL and the way the cap is set up
you have 3-4 big $ players and then everyone else

One of those players has to be your QB (or will be your QB provided you have one worth investing in)

But at least one more should be on D
    and another on a LT

So if we have half our salary cap tied up in a QB, a LT and a pass rusher – I don;t think its salary cap suicide

but as you stated, you do need to dfraft well
After rookis and players under rookie contracts, your only other option is vets to fill the holes
    And that can be difficult

I don;t think Jeff Ireland approached salaries this way
I don;t think he was horrible per se b/c I think you overspend in Free Agency
but paying guiys liek wallace, ellerbee, Wheeler, Hartline, Gibson and even Pouncey, Starks and field the big chunks of your salary cap room is probably going to lead you to average results

but paying a few elite players big $ may get you over that hump
    That is my opinion anyway

    Suh requires a big contract
no one is really worth that kind of $
but he would be the best player on our D if we had him
and he would be one of the best players in the league

I think Al made a good point about Wake
we can;t afford to pay wake big $ in 2016

Sure there are, but that can be said at LT too. In fact we could have drafted a LT like Cordy Glenn or David Bakhtiari instead of giving Albert that silly contract as you say. 😉

I’m glad we have Albert, hope he comes back and gives us ‘years’ of top flight service. But you see my point.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think I would still rather have Albert then either of those guys

IMO Albert was bleu chip LT throughout his career
He just needs to be healthy

I’m sure you are right that the market caused the wallace contract to be high
but you don;t chase guys like that unless they are really the best at their position

      FWIW
I hate the idea of signing Cobb as well

There are 2 big contracts that I thinkl are worth it
      Suh and Iupati
Other than than, the players out there are not worth big free agency money

Wallace is an example of why teams don;t want to chase free agents
you can only afford a few players with that $

but if you are paying players who are the best in the league that kind of $$$, you can win
if you are pating guys like wallace that kind of $ – I don;t see that as a road to a championship

  87. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Btw, don’t bother quoting 100 million dollar contracts. That crap isn’t guaranteed in football as it is in other pro sports. JJ Watt & DT Gerald McCoy have a similar financial deals. Both are guaranteed about $30-35 mill through their first two years on their current contracts.

  88. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

dbolt — Fox signed a two-year contract worth a total of $2.5 million. Sorta leaves it up in the air what they have planned for him other than he will be on the roster and he won’t be a starter (except for maybe till Albert is ready).

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Stanger….that’s top backup money. Mando mention Miami tries to let Thomas develop as an OG in the background, but who knows.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

It’s not that far above the NFL vet minimum, even if it is. Garner’s cap hit was $1.7 mil last year. And we haven’t seen how it is structured either………the 2nd year could be backloaded. So I’m left with he is back on the team and will be active. Exactly where on the depth chart not sure.

  89. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Piggy > “Only one defensive player wins DPOY”

Yeah, and that happened to be JJ Watt I believe right? 😉

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

In fact Watt has won the DPOY twice in last 3 seasons…that’s why he got the big contract. I haven’t seen Suh’s named a DPOY yet in his 5 seasons, yet he’s talking like he wants more money that Watt.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

That justifies the comparison between two different positions

but the fact that I have a different opinion only indicates that it is a different opinion
which we all shold have rather than relying on majority opinions
Alebir I would have given Watt both DPOY based on his stats

If watt was a free agent, I would endorse paying him big $$$ too

I happen to think Suh is special
and if you watch him play by play – you can see the dispruption he causes is on a different level

  90. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Al

Watt comes at the QB from everywhere. I do understand, theoretically at least, that with the talent we have on defense at DE, and potentially at LB, could make Suh even better, but Suh did have Ziggy Ansah. The reset of the DET defense is not impressive. I suppose Suh, Mitchell, along with Wake and Vernon should be a terror, and if somehow, we can extract Dion Jordan’s head from his ass so he can see where the QB is, it could be dangerous. lol

  91. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Trypod

I really think you need to draft skill positions instead of chasing them in free agency
if anything you re-sign guys you drafted (like the Lions with Clavin Johns0n)

but I don;t love looking at free agency to bring in WRs or RBs (generally)
and since that is where you big $ is spent, I don;t think all the big $ should be spent on offensive players

I think you want a stud at QB, a stud at LT and a stud pass rusher
Ultimately those players make the players around them better

We need Tanny to continue to get better
We need Albert to stay healthy
We need a player like Suh for the final part of that formula

I can;t guarantee that any of those things will come together
but IMO that is a winning formula

rather than a guy liek wallace (and Pouncey for that matter) taking the kind of $ he is taking up

HERE’S THE HORRID REPORT ON MY DOLPHINS’ SEASON TICKETS:
    1) All tickets between the goal lines on the Dolphins side are gone, EXCEPT for the $1000-$2000 per game tickets in ROSS’s exclusive zone.–All tickets between the 30’s on the VISITOR’s side, sections 117-118-119 ARE GONE (which I find hard to believe unless Ross is holding back some of these to sell as “extra tickets” for those who buy $1000-$2000 per game seasons tickets.) –The advisor said the best remaining tickets in my price range ($150 and below) were in section 120, 40 rows up, seats 13 & 14. He said these tix would be approximately on the 20 yard line AND would be in the shade for PART of the year after the canopy is built for the 2016 season.
    2) The date to APPLY for parking passes has NOT yet been determined. He did not state IF these are part of the season ticket package or not.
    ——————-
IN RETROSPECT, I might have been better getting end zone seats about 25 rows up under the shade of the new canopy. IF Miami has another non-playoff season this year, I’m SURE thousands of better seats will be available to those (like me) who are NOT happy with their current location. IN conclusion, ROSS HAS ROYALLY SCREWED thousands of loyal ticket holders, many of whom, like me, have been pushed across the field and raised from row 9 to row 40. THIS IS EXACTLY the way I expected to be treated by this man, based on his record of football futility and bad choices.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

OUCH OD. Were their tix btwn the 30’s available at a higher price on the visitor’s side?

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

He’s seated directly behind the top backup OT Jason Fox…..😭😭😭😭😭

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

LOL — but this is more of a serious issue…….it’s about where I’ll be sitting for some games. Don’t care whether I see Fox or not.

  93. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    GDP,
Watt’s performance for sure had something to do with DPOY but position matters in these awards.
DE are more popular than DT.
Ed Reed & Troy Polamalu impacted the game just as much as Watt IMO during their best days taking away entire sections of the field from QB and yet those two only were awarded DPOY once in their playing careers.

    ———————————-
OL i believe needs to be bolstered through 1 FA who will be good enough to name starter after he is signed, and one draft pick, for depth/development.

WR is something i DO NOT want to sign a guy through FA, draft only and get us a couple early on, potentially even another late.

CB is really dependent on how you feel about Taylor/Davis, but since neither have made a full year healthy it makes me feel like we would be good with a vet as an incase.

S, i think Aikens is ready, and we have a couple other guys who have filled in there decently, so MAYBE a vet from FA.

DT and OG are the two places i think we need to hit homeruns at with our FA signings.

So suppose this scenario, i think when all is said and done we will be somewhere like 32mil in remaining cap space. 17 to Suh, 5 mil for rookie class, the remaining 10, 6 for a stud OG, the other 4, 2 for a vet safety, and other 2 for a vet CB. I draft an ILB and 2WR’s days 1 and 2, and fill the rest, however BPA works out for positions we need depth/dev players at. I don’t see this as plan that doesnt work, so i guess that’s the big difference is some of you don’t see that as workable and some of us do.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

On DT & OG/OL being the two places we need to hit homeruns….well, so far our FA signing has been Jason Fox. 😉

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Lots of your points in there are mine as well. And Suh will want long-term. So the cap hit doesn’t have to be 17 mil first year. My guess is Dawn could make it a third of that, but then Tanny is going to need similar money in years to come. That’s when I hit a stopping point on Suh.

I’d rather spend half overall on a DT, put more into the other positions you named, and move on with a better cap future.

  95. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Piggy, yes two different opinions, and yours is as good as mine, I think…lol. So all is good.
Yes Suh is a beast, gets a great push and commands double & triple teams on him. But I just worry paying that much, which is way more than Wallace is getting BTW.

So ‘if’ we get Suh, we better have a DC that knows how to get the best out of him, and a GM that knows how to get the other personnel around him right, and the defensive coaches where to best utilize the other players in the front 7 so they can make plays around the blockers that Suh gobbles up like pac-man.

Huge expectations come with a signing like that, and in our present cap, personnel, & depth situation, it leaves little wiggle room to make sure this move makes the whole defense Top 5 say.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

We can;t really control who the DC is

Let’s say there is a change in 2016
The new one gets a nice piece to work with in Suh

  96. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

In another example of why you draft WRs rather than sign them to big contracts
Wallace, Bowe and Marshall are all being shopped around by their respective teams

Not only are they all current examples of WRs who’s teams’ beleive they are producing what they are paid
but 2 of those 3 guys are 3rd rounders

  97. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Ken,
Don’t get concerned about the dollars that would roll to Suh.
The CBA forces teams to spend dollars on someone.
The allocation of money to the cap for every player changes year to year.
Tannehill is the only high salary to worry about if there is anything to worry about going forward because he will likely stay longer than 3 years barring injury or serious regression.

  98. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Raiders will be hosting Suh next week
    (NFL rumor)
