New Age – My Fan Origin

New Age- My Fan Origin

My fan origin starts with my father and his part of the story influences all of the rest. My father was raised in a time when the NFL wasn’t nearly as popular and baseball was still king. His grandfather loved the Reds and didn’t watch that other stuff. He preferred football and has always considered Shula the greatest coach ever (he is). He would watch football whenever given the chance but only one game a week because there were more important things to do than just watch TV.

Shula---New-Age
He transferred his allegiance when Shula went to Miami. Those early years were amazing and I wish I had seen some of those games (thanks for letting me relive them OD!) After high school, my dad experienced a bit of wanderlust and decided to explore Florida for a few weeks with his younger brother. They saved up a few weeks of pay and were off. It was an awesome experience for both guys but after 3 weeks…they ran out of money and headed back home to West Virginia. Several years later, he met my mom and they moved to Ormond Beach, Fl. It was a rough but magical time for them but they moved back to care for their parents and grandparents four years later…with two boys in tow. It was a tough decision but they missed their family. Many summers during my early years included trips back to visit where I was born. It’s sad to see the Florida of the 70s and 80s disappear so completely. It was definitely a different place back then.
I can’t remember my first games as a Dolphins fan but I was always one because my dad raised me as a fan. My earliest Dolphins memories are some of the best though. The early 80s teams were very good and as I got older, Marino was a weekly addiction. We were always ‘in the hunt’ and no one had a better QB during the 80s and 90s.

Marino-New-Age

My dad hasn’t seriously watched the Dolphins in 15 years. They are not the preferred weekly choice in our Virginia market, Marino and Shula retired, and he just doesn’t have as much fun watching this team without his kids. He also really enjoys the atmosphere of college football. As a Hokies fan, his taste in college ball seriously diverges from mine but we will always have the same pro team. I’m hoping that we will soon be able to watch a SB together and be cheering for the same team in it…the Dolphins. Let’s hope Hickey, Ross, and Philbin can get us there sooner than later.

Hickey, Ross, Philbin

first—good story. A lot of transplants are from the north and during the last two decades most new Floridians are from foreign countries. We have several S.Americans living in our neighborhood.

Here’s my dilemma. My granddaughter asked me a question I can’t answer. Maybe with all the smart people on this board someone can answer it for me and I won’t disappoint her.

What happens when someone dies in California while visiting from Florida and its 10pm in California. Did they die at 10pm or 1am in Florida the next day? I was thinking of giving her the gmt as the answer but I can’t be sure its correct

    How can I google this?

The good news is if the signing becomes official tomorrow Suh would be that angry guy who’ll give the cheap shots to the Patriots when they pull dirty shit. Unlike Wake if Suh gets tackled by an OL he’ll get up and throat punch him and kick him in the nuts.

Everyone is saying no we we can re-sign Clay.
Beasley says Wallace most likely comes back.

    • D's avatar D says:

Clay can be re-signed. No way they cut Jones. Fields is definately in danger. Wallace still likely to be cut or traded. There fixed all that.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

If Buffalo pays Clay 8 mill per season he is gone. We can’t afford that now. We will see on Jones and I think Wallace is back. We can’t afford to lose Hartline, Gibson, Clay and Wallace. We will keep Wallace. He doesn’t clear that much cap space for us.

We still have to clear over $10 million cap space to just sign Suh and get to $0 on the cap. That does not include money for the rookie class, other free agents and emergency signings during the season.

We currently only have 58 players under contract and we are only 9 million under the cap. Some painful cuts and decisions are headed our way.

      Painful, like Starks’s 5 million and Ellerbe’s 5.6?

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

They wont equate to 11 million in cap savings and we still need both roster spots filled. Plus we still need to make room for other free agents and rookies.

    Fields is 3M

    S. Smith is 2.75
    Misi is 2.75

Wallace, if cut, will save another 2.5

It’s no different than what any network person with their own show does on CNN/FOXNEWS/MSNBC/CNBC. Style is the only difference. Trash talk is trash talk :P.
As for Brent, we have no idea what he feels like. He may like to say those things Miko says but knows he can’t and may enjoy hearing his wife vent for him. On the other hand, he may not really care what goes on because it doesn’t affect his job (only his performance does). Ken

    Let it play out

these guys, our local beat reporters have no idea what they are talking about
    particulalry with salary cap stuff

I’m under the impression we already had the cap space you are saying we need

The Dolphins put the transition tag on Clay
No offer can be made to clay until Tuesday
and then they get a chance to match the offer

I don;t think they need to cut anyone now to finalize the Suh deal

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

The cap space numbers that I am citing is what was being reported on NFL radio this morning. We still need to make nearly 10 million in cap space by tomorrow. It looks like we can do that wit releasing Ellerbe and Starks which would bring us to $0. Then we need significantly more to resign Clay who is reportedly going to be offered 8 million by Bills.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        Those numbers are wrong
How muich is Suh making in year 1 ?
How much cap room do we have now?
        That is what matters

  31. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I won’t be shocked if we can’t re-sign Clay. That’s kinda what happens when you allocate a shit-ton of money to one guy. That being said, you all shouldn’t worry so much. It seems you’re forgetting about the Mighty Arthur Lynch!

  32. Ken's avatar Ken says:

The Packers haven;t won a SB signing signing Rogers
The Broncos have no won a SB since signing Manning
The Steelers have not won a SB since signing Rothlisberger

The only 100M contract that I wonder if the contract was signed pre super Bowl win is Drew brees and Eli Manning

    ——————————————
You are guessing on the 8mil for Clay, that would be an excessive huge deal. Jimmy Graham recently signed the largest TE contract, and he makes an average of 10mil per. Is Clay anywhere near Jimmy Graham honestly? Gronkowski is 9mil per, is he that close to Gronkowski? He also has competition at TE this year with Cameron and Thomas available, and i doubt any of them get 8mil per, though Thomas may is Jags with a ton of cap space throw a lot at him. The 5 mil for the rookies comes from Smith and Wheelers post June 1 cut designation. I also dont think Wallace is safe as long as Clay is resigned, we can replace Wallace.

That will help tremendously. If we do that, there is no reason on earth why we shouldn’t make the playoffs, and no more excuses for Philbin.

  53. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Common myths about NFL contracts -> Base salaries (including year 1) are guaranteed, roster bonuses are guaranteed, option bonuses are guaranteed, signing bonuses are pro-rated evenly over the years of the contract life (e.g. Gerald McCoy’s was not as TB chose to allocate 2/3 of it in the cap years corresponding to McCoy’s first 2 contract years).

Only the signing bonus is guaranteed and it is paid out immediately to the player upon signing. The first year base salary and any roster bonus is ‘virtually’ guaranteed because no team will cut a player soon after signing them.

Also, contract terms can guarantee any range of certain year base salary + certain year bonus money if negotiated by agents as a means against injury protection (if clubs decide to defer some money for cap purposes by agreeing on a certain number for a signing bonus but then on paper splitting that into two tiers -> 1 as a signing bonus and 2 as an option bonus.)

Also, you see NFL contracts where certain guys have their 3rd year base salary and some other bonuses guaranteed if they are roster-ed by the first week of the NFL new year in the 2nd year of their contract.

The bottom line? Not all contracts are created equally and the devil is in the details. Headline comments about guarantees don’t state when certain dollars are due which by default define ‘guarantees’. Agents love to mention guarantees to news outlets as a way to drive their own business.

  54. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Mike E,
No doubt about it, all the pressure now is on the coaches. If the team goes 8-8 or hell even 9-7 (assuming RT is not injured or the Suh and a few others hurt on D), Ross will point to the coaches and not the players.

Mike Wallace, primarily known for work as a post route runner, was signed for big money but put on a team with the 2nd fewest down field attempts the last 2 years not to mention issues with Tannehill not connecting deep often. Chemistry issues were not even considered (though Ireland had experienced the same crap with BMarshall and didn’t learn).
Brandon Albert was a necessity and he delivered up until his leg was snapped (it happens in football; can’t do much about it). Fins did draft Turner and James among others to plug more talent along the lines and I’m sure they will continue to select more OL to eventually churn over Albert (Turner is still seen by many as an option at LT down the road).

  59. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Ken,
I don’t think this is a strict Tannanbaum move at all. Hickey and Tannanbaum both came from organizations that put a premium on the DT position under a philosophy that a defense is built from the inside out (McCoy in TB; Wilkerson in NY).

    • Tim Knight's avatar Silly Tim says:

I don’t either but you knew it would be perceived like that. I’m pretty sure everyone knows who Suh is. LOL

  60. Tim Knight's avatar Silly Tim says:

Look at the contracts the Lions had with Megatron, Stafford and Suh as well as other players. There are ways to make it work.

  61. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

@ArmandoSalguero: Brandon Fields is scheduled to cost $3.9M in cap. Releasing him would save $3.1M. After bad season, cap hit too high.

  62. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Ken,
I don’t see much risk in this anyway. I think it’s known that if the Fins are not performing as a good playoff team come 2017, Suh himself is at risk of being cut. I think the Fins front office will continue to stock talent at all positions and eventually keep their options open on cutting any high priced guy. The biggest disasters come when you go out in the FA market, sign a guy for big money to get a quick fix at a position, AND then ignore it in the draft for several years.

  63. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Dbolt,
Agreed. Kickers are a dime a dozen. No way I’d ever pay any high dollars. You keep bringing in guys on a weekly basis to try out if you don’t have an established guy.

I’m sure at the Dolphins roundtable they asked
    “Who wants Suh”

Everyone In Football wants Suh on their team

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

No but I would bet it might be something like Tannebaum saying you guys need to shoot higher, Suh is not out of reach we can get him here we don’t have to draft Shelton and hope he helps we can get the best player in the game at that position. More as a rally cry than a brilliant idea.

I’m happy with the move, I think we’re a better team with Suh, and i think we’ll get even better in this draft. On the other hand, I can see some valid points in what the people who are saying it won’t work too.

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

I don’t, and never have, given a shit how anyone else feels about the team. I know I’m a sucker and this time they got me two ways, a huge FA signing that should really help us plus it is one of my most favorite players. I can assure you of another 12-4 prediction from me.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I don’t see anyone questioning the player, only the price and where else it could have been put too. And if he got about market value, that should be a legit option for any signing.

  68. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Last year Suh had 8.5 sacks, topped 37 quarterback hurries and 21 tackles-for-losses. That roughly averages to a half sack, 2+ hurries and two tackles for loss each game. That’s 4-5 plays he kills each game by himself.

And that’s while taking up two guys on the O-Line. Not gonna be doubling Wake anymore unless they are in max protect.

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

It should mean less guys per play to cover. Teams will have to keep a TE or back or both in allowing our secondary to have more double and triple coverage opportunities.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I can’t see guys like Wake, Vernon, Jordan. McCain, hell, everyone on the defense not being excited, and knowing this will make their job easier.

  69. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Sorry for being the voice of opposition here but I see too much money tied up in a player not a QB when we have other holes to fill especially on OL and WR. Do I like Suh? Hell yes. He is a tremendous talent and I will enjoy watching him harass Brady but I would be lying if I thought he was the missing piece.

  70. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Maybe Shaq Thompson begins to make sense. A guy with speed to the outside, who can cover a back or a shallow receiver route. Teams will want to get outside away from our middle we have to be able to get out there with speed and good tackling.
Darby is good against the run as well as a corner. Tackling on the edges is crucial so we can force things inside to the Suhpressor.

  71. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Ken voice of opposition is a great thing, it balances things out. Trust me i listen to your arguments, i just feel i have also defended against them as to how we can maneuver it cap wise. I think Tim said itbest though. The team is going to make the moves it can make, they arent stupid, and if anything Aponte has always shown she can work contracts with long term in mind very well. If she thinks she can do it, its can be done and done without castrating the team. I don’t think ya need to worry over it, and i think it will achieve exactly what you are wanting for our team. Its going to make us better.

Yeah man i get it. It is kinda scary. I mean you have possibilities that a player after a big contract lays up, or gets injured or a lot of things and then your stuck with big money on the table and nothing to show for it. We all are nervous about that but you gotta swing for the fences sometimes. Albert move was risky. Thats a lot of money in a guy who missed a lot of games previously with injury, and so far we havent really got our moneys worth, but they HAD to do that if we wanted to protect Tanny and hopefully start moving int he right direction. I know its a lot of money but thats kinda how i see this move. Its a bold move, with risk, but its our best shot at really moving forwad on defense and making steps to catch the Pats.

Yeah Mike, under different management. Tell me who is better to make decisions than the people hired to make decisions. Noone is beyond reproach, but (‘ers have been heralded here as people who make awesome decisions. How ya think about their recent ones? That team is looking like its in shambles, and its same people making decisions now as before. No one is beyond reproach, and no one is going to hit 100% of the time. The guys that are going were decisions made by someone who is gone for making bad ones…so why are you holding accountable the new guy for the past ones mistakes? I know you tend to be a cynic, but still asnwer me this, who is paid to make these decisions, and are you saying a person who has spent years at this profession is more clueless than a bunch of fans on a blog?

“Do I like Suh? Hell yes. He is a tremendous talent”

i agree with you on this. how do you not like a player with his talent on your team? but truth is he is just one player and this team needs many many other holes filled (i know i know that is what she said). and didnt tanny have a hard enough time last year with a new offense and now they are going to give him a new WR staff. as fun an idea signing a player like suh it doesnt get me excited about hope for this season.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

      Exactly how I feel.

    • D's avatar D says:

WR’s that are gone were not productive, and their production is likely elipsed by the rookies drafted to replace them. I feel same about Wallace but i get why we are leery to cut him with Clay being an on the fence re-sign. WR’s are quickly beoming just like RB’s. Old expensive can be replaced by young cheap. This is a DEEP class, and i dont think ya need to worry about Tanny working with guys who want to come in and make their place. I think you have more to worry about with guys who are old diva’s who want the team to conorm to them instead of busting their ass to conform to team needs.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

Mind don’t mind the oink of opposition
I just think in this case, we need to let it play out to see if their are negative consequences that make it a bad move

Right now I think all we know if that we signed Suh
And are the envy of many teams who could not

  87. TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

Ok, I’m a bad guy. Sorry I question the move. It has been proven not only that signing the highest price FA has always paid off for the team paying because history shows that, but it has also been proven that this team, from ownership down through the current coaching staff, knows what to do and how to do it, because a again, history shows it. I have no right to question ANYTHING because I’m just a stupid fan, on a blog where people come to, you know, discuss what’s up with their favorite team, and I’ve only been a fan for like 40-odd years, which means I probably haven’t seen enough football to warrant a dissenting opinion. Forgive me. But please, feel free to tell me I am wrong or that my opinion, the one I have based on my ability to take in information and make suppositions and assumptions that, I admit, are wrong sometimes and I make a point to acknowledge my error, is uncalled for, incorrect, no way I could be right, invalid, etc., though I think I am one of of not the least confrontational, opinionated person on this board, with perhaps the exception of Herd.

  91. D's avatar D says:

FA signigns all have gamble associated with them. Are they a scheme fit success, do the players around them on current team help them look better, will they get injured, will they lay up after big contract. I mean lots of risks right, and it doesnt matter if they are 17 mil or 10 mil signing, you still have worries. Albert i was really worried about and it happened, what i was most concerned about. Still it was a good signing and you could see that for the games he was there.

You cant predict injuries, you cant tell if a player that busts his ass for 5 years is going to immediately flip the script and lay up, you wont know until they are out of that environment if it was a scheme thing (though you can generally tell from film if that is a possibility). It is what it is and its always a gamble. Manning was a HUGE gamble, first big hit coulda snapped his neck like a twig, and not ya got 20mil invested on Timmah from Southpark. It is what it is and you guys wanted bold moves and now your scared as shit we might actually make one.
