WHAT WOULD MAKE HULK ANGRY THE FREE AGENCY PRIMER

incredible-hulk By Dr. Bruce Banner End of football season and not yet start of league year mean Hulk have some time to calm down and relax. Hulk no think about football too much and Hulk no get angry too much. Funny how that works out. But now this coming Tuesday the league starts and that means the start of free agency. This get Hulk starting to think about football. Hulk start to think what free agents might Dolphins sign and what free agents might Dolphins lose? As Hulk begins to think about the various scenarios Hulk start to get sweaty, his chest starts pounding, his head start hurting and Hulk start getting angry thinking about mistakes that team might make. Hulk think of many things that would make him angry. This is what would make Hulk angry in free agency: Signing Ndamukong Suh for crazy big money. It’s not that Hulk doesn’t like Suh, in fact Hulk have great respect for Suh and his style of play. However, Hulk sees to much money to be spent on one player on defense. Hulk see many other needs that may not get addressed if we sign Suh such as contract extension for Ryan Tannehill. Then there is fixing the offensive line and wide receiver. For the same money that we spend to sign Suh we could sign Mike Iupati and Randall Cobb. Hulk think that would make much bigger impact on team than 1 defensive tackle. We would solidify the interior of the offensive line which would mean Tannehill would have more time to throw and Miller would have more open lanes to run. At same time we could add Randall Cobb who is ideally for Dolphins offense. He has speed to get deep but thrives in the short to intermediate passing game. Nearly one half of his 1,200 yards were after the catch. Tannehill thrives in the short to intermediate game as well. If we sign Cobb, then we have 2 wide receivers who play very well in space and can line up in multiple positions including the boundary, the slot or the backfield and at R1P14 one of these 3 wide receivers are likely to be available: Amari Cooper, Kevin White or Devante Parker. All of whom would be excellent boundary receivers. We would fix OL and give Tannehill multiple weapons to work with but if we sign Suh then this is not possible as we will have no money to bring in veteran OG. We will be forced to draft and rely on rookie OL instead. There are other good options for interior OL in free agency other than Iupati. Vladimir Ducasse of the Vikings, Orlando Franklin of Broncos and Jah Reid of Ravens give other options at OG for Dolphins to get immediate help on interior OL. Another option is to sign Steve Wisnewski from Raiders at OC and keep Mike Pouncey at OG. Another thing that would make Hulk angry is if we sign Jared Odrick to big contract extension. Odrick play a lot but not make many tackles or sacks. Also Dolphin run defense really struggled with Odrick playing DT. There is talk of Odrick getting an $8 million dollar per year contract. Hulk no see that and Hulk be very angry if Phins pay Odrick that much. There are other good DT options available that would be cheaper. Dan Williams for instance is very good run stuffing DT and he be cheaper than Odrick. Terrence Knighton may not be cheaper but he is better than Odrick. Vince Woolfork is now on the open market, maybe he like to come back to Miami for a short term contract and take up space in middle of field. Nick Fairley, Suh’s team mate is also free agent and is better than Odrick. There are too many good options at DT to invest that much money in Odrick. Hulk also hear people talk about signing a veteran running back like Frank Gore. This also would make Hulk angry. Again Hulk like Frank Gore but Hulk no not to sign a running back on the wrong side of 30. Hulk thinks Phins have their running back with Lamar Miller. What Phins need is a quality back up running back/short yardage specialist. There are good options in draft including a Hulk favorite in Tyler Varga. Hulk would see no reason to spend cap dollars on a veteran running back when it is a good year for running backs in the draft. Hulk would also be very angry if we no address the secondary in free agency. Right now Phins have 2 quality defensive backs on roster in Grimes and Reshad Jones and there is talk of cutting Jones to make cap space for Suh. Hulk getting angry just thinking about that. Jamar Taylor flashed talent in limit playing time last year. He may or may not be ready to be a full time CB. Louis Delmas was the starting S but he get injured and is now a free agent. We need at least 1 safety and one corner back. The market not great but there are some decent options that should not cost much. One option at CB is Darius Butler. He has proven to be a viable nickel back the last several years in Indianapolis and would not break the cap budget. Byron Maxwell be available at CB but he more expensive and Hulk no think he would be as good away from rest of pro bowl secondary in Seattle. At safety Hulk like Tyvon Branch from Oakland Raiders. I know Hulk like his Uconn guys but Branch has been a quality player who goes under the radar on bad team. Branch has speed to play center field and again not likely to break cap budget. Also Hulk like Antrell Rolle who is also a free agent. He is a proven ball hawk with 9 interceptions over last 2 years. Plus he is known to be a hard worker and good club house influence. Tom Coughlin called him the hardest working player he has ever seen. However he is likely to cost more. Finally, Hulk would be very angry if TE Charles Clay is lost to free agency, especially to Buffalo Bills as it was reported that coach Rex wanted to sign Clay. The imposition of the transition tag now makes it less likely we lose Clay as with transition tag Phins get right to match any offer. However, reports are that Bills still willing to make big offer to Clay. If we lose Clay there are not many good options in either the draft or free agency. The TE class in the draft is one of the worst in recent years. Most of the 40 times of the TEs in this draft make Arthur Lynch look fast. The free agency class is headed by Julius Thomas but he would be expensive and he will also be playing without Peyton Manning, DeMaryius Thomas and Wes Welker. Hulk not sure he worth signing for the kind of money he will demand. Jermaine Gresham is a quality TE but probably not better, or as versatile as Charles Clay. Jordan Cameron on Cleveland is available but again Hulk thinks Charles Clay fits Fins offense better. So Hulk thinks it is important to re-sign Charles Clay or else Hulk be very angry and no one wants that. content

  77. Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Just a reminder (especially for Stanger who asked a question about how the tag works above). Clay getting an offer does not mean we won’t sign him back. We have the right of first refusal on the contract (for lack of a better description) we’ll have to match the contract to catch him.

To those asking if Clay is worth 8m per year, well, let me ask you this: Is Clay 75% of the player that Jimmy Graham is? Because with inflation that’s probably an 11M dollar per year deal.

I think he’s worth what the market will pay for him. We have been so bad as an organization at developing top tier players in the NFL, that I’m utterly shocked how many of you are so flippant about letting Clay walk because you think 8M a year is so daunting.

When we tagged him at 7, given the cuts that have been made we have more than a mil left, just in those cuts to pay the extra mil. Again though i wouldnt go higher.

  85. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Jahn — understand how the transition tag works on competitive one-year offers (and what Clay is worth is subjective, but if we pay more than the $8 mil franchise tag we screwed up).

What I was curious about is can a team like the Bills respond to our transition tag with a multi-year offer or do the rules limit it to one year only?

    • D's avatar D says:

      the tag is 7 mil.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

That’s the transition tag amount. And I think the franchise tag for TEs was $8.33 mil. So we could have locked him solid for that.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

We could have locked him solid for a Single Year.

There’s another element of franchise tagging players besides the fact it only secures them for a single year: Players freakin’ hate it.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Wait a minute. I think I realize the problem here. You think the team signing him to an offer sheet has to “beat” something. They don’t. They just have to present an offer that Clay likes. The fins than match it, or let him walk.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

They can offer a multi-year deal as long as the 1st year is more than the tag amount I believe.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

I don’t believe that’s true. Clay can agree to any deal he wants on the open market. Any deal. The Fins can either match the contract or let him walk. If he doesn’t receive any offers he plays for fins for the Transition number.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

That must include signing bonus in some way though. Perhaps it is averaged over the duration so long as it is greater?

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

It’s not accurate Stanger. It’s really not that complicated guys. Teams who are interested in Clay sign him to an offer sheet. He also must sign the offer sheet for it to be binding. The fins than decide if they want to match that contract. Whether it’s 10 years for league minimum, or 1 year for minimum and 5 years much higher, or 6 years at 20m per year. The fins merely choose: do we want to match it or not?

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

So the contract must have a salary of at least $7 mil per year and the signing bonus is not included in beating the transition tag number? I’m asking what you need to do to beat the $7 mil in a multi year contract. And I’m not trying to be a pain in the butt…..I really don’t know.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

The transition tag is for all offers, not just one year offers. The FT only secures a player for one year, and if you notice, since the new CBA, most top FA offers are exceeding the FT number on an average basis. So that wouldn’t be a mistake if they want to lock him up for more than one year.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

So what does a team have to do to beat a one-year $7 mil transition tag in a multi-year offer?

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

You tell me. There’s way more than a single answer to that question.

All I’m saying is that it’s really not difficult and whatever gyrations you guys are talking about regarding the first year prices of the hypothetical offer are unnecessary.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Jahn — I’m a lawyer. We live by rules. I figure there is one for such a situation. Just asking what it is.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

I feel like I lost this post in cyberspace, but I think you (Stanger) seem to be thinking the offering team needs to “beat” the transition tag number. But I don’t believe that to be true in my many readings of the TT rules since Clay was tagged. It merely has to be an offer Clay likes. In theory, he’s not going to sign a single year offer for much less than the TT number, but if he does, the fins can merely choose to match it and keep him for a single year at a much lessor price.

    D,
Well when I was a kid, before free agency, it was common to see guys you liked be mostly lifers on a team.
Now everybody is a fart in the wind. A 9yo can understand that analogy better than CBA & FA talk

Even if Clay likes the Jills offer, we have 7 days to figure shit out before it’s a done deal. 🙂

  90. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Stanger

I would think the contract (for Clay) would have to exceed $7M annually.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Maybe that is the rule. But seems you could avoid it by backloading though. Remember how JT got like two or three mil in his first year with the Yets and then was on the books for some huge amount the next year? But guess if that came up we could just match.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Only economics would dictate that. There is no such rule.

  91. Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Stanger, I had a post lost in cyberspace. I think my last one may be the answer to your question. Let me know. I’m happy to share what I’ve learned about the Tag, but that’s all I’m doing. I have never though, in anything I’ve read, seen a rule that says the offering team (Buffalo in this case) would have to BEAT the Transition tag number. But in theory, why would Clay sign a single year deal for less than he is already slated to get in Miami next season? And if he did, the fins would just match the contract per their right and get him for cheaper than the 7M tag number.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Maybe that’s the answer Jahn. You don’t have to beat the transition tag and it is up to the tag team to match what is offered. Assume that would mean the player would have to approve the offer from the other team first then. Imagine if is was for half the transition tag amount.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Yes. Exactly. It’s known as an offer sheet. It’s not a player contract, it’s a precursor to a contract. They make the offer, Clay says, I’ll play for that and signs the sheet. Than the fins decide within 7 days if they want to match it or not. If they do not, the offer from the bills becomes an enforceable contract between Clay and the Bills.. If the fins do match, the offer becomes an enforceable contract between Clay and the Fins.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’ll just have to trust you on that Jahn, though that is a logical scenario. Did a little bit of searching and the CBA language didn’t show up, least not on the first few screens. Thanks.

This is the posturing you’d expect from a savvy agent. Believe me, Clay rather play in sunny Miami for a QB like Tanny vs. Buffalo & a ragged QB & RB situation.
Would be different if Buffalo was a perennial playoff contender….lol

    GDP,
From what I understand, the Fins have an option to match the Bills offer meaning that the Fins must accept the structure the Bills create. If the Bills offer more money up front in years 1 and 2 that won’t fit under the Fins cap, then the Fins can’t match it. That’s how I understand it (but I’m not entirely certain). One thing I know is that the NFL formula for transition tag value is different than the franchise tag value because of where the two formulas take averages from.
