Sodomized at the Draft with Colonpokey: NFL Busts

ColonpokeyMasterCodeofColonpokeyEven a perverted relentless hamster like myself knows there is only so much the butt can take.  So rest your rears Dolfans, today we get to look at the misfortune of the rest of the NFL.  Enjoy laughing at the misfortunes of other teams as I give them the poke!

Let’s start with the gold standard of all busts.  In the 1998 NFL Draft there was a great QB debate.  The Colts held the first overall choice, the Chargers the 2nd.  Both were in the market for a QB.  But who would the Colts select first, Peyton Manning, the technician with NFL bloodlines or the up and comer from Washington State, Ryan Leaf.  Leaf had a rocket arm, but the Colts went conservative and selected Peyton Manning.

That left the Chargers who were pokied by yours truly.  Manning is on his way to the Hall of Fame, Leaf finished his career with a more than 2 -1 Int to TD ratio and a 50 QB rating.  Leaf also added an indictment for burglary and possession of a controlled substance to his legacy.  The photo below illustrates how the great QB debate of 1998 worked out in the end.

ManningvsLeaf

Leaf might be the biggest Draft bust of all time.  Until another QB rivaled him in 2007.  Its not easy to be the worst pick in Raiders history but JaMarcus Russell might have achieved that.  After drafting Russell with the #1 pick of the 2007 draft the Raiders proceeded to give him a 68 Million dollar contract with 31.5 guaranteed.  This of course was before the rookie salary cap came into effect – actually Russell might be one of the reasons owners begged for the rookie salary cap.

Russell was a great athlete from a powerhouse team in the SEC but in the NFL, he was a great big pokey hurting butts on every coast.  Some say Russell had a drug  problem but I wouldn’t know anything about that…heehee…

CPdealingDrank

Quarterbacks and busts in the NFL can be synonymous.  Its a tough position to evaluate.  I could write a whole blog on quarterback busts from the state of Ohio.  But I will spare Ohio the pain.

TheBoz

One of the first draft busts I ever remember was a Linebacker from Oklahoma.  Coming into the NFL Brian Bosworth was all hype.  The Boz sold t-shirts and haircuts to tasteless fans all over the country.  The hype must have gone to his head, he actually wrote letters before the supplemental draft to many NFL teams declaring that if they signed him he wouldn’t play for them.  When the Seahawks ignored the letter and drafted him they signed him to the biggest rookie contract of all time at that time.  He ended up playing three years for the Seahawks.  Guess how this photo of an attempted tackle on Bo Jackson worked out.

Madarcich

Another overhyped prospect worth mentioning is Tony Mandarich.  The Packers whiffed on this athletic freak they attempted to draft as the cornerstone of their offensive line.  Madarich was built like the Incredible Hulk and NFL teams and Sports Illustrated, who helped build the hype at the behest of Mandarich’s agent, were excited to see this guy bulldoze defenses.  But it didn’t work out that way.  Some say steroid testing played a part in his quick decline.  Mandarich made a comeback with the Colts years later.  But trust me, that pokey hurts!

But as Dolfans, you don’t care about the misses of any of these teams do you?  You want to hear about the butt hurt of the AFC East.

GholstonLaughDolphins

Let’s start with the obvious: The New York Jests. The Jests misses are countless, Marc Sanchez, Blair Thomas and Kyle Brady all come to mind.  But I would rather go with something a little more recent.  In 2008, the Jests were eager to see Rex Ryan’s defensive scheme at work.  The centerpiece would be a premier pass rusher….heehee…they got Vernon Gholston instead…

LosmanDolphinLaugh

What’s worse than wasting a first round pick on a bust – how bout wasting a first and a second round pick.  That is what the Bills did in 2004.  In that draft the Bills selected Lee Evans with their first round pick.  They still needed a QB though.  So they traded up from the second into the 22nd pick of the 2004 draft and gave up their 1st round pick in 2005 in the trade.  With the 22nd pick of the 2004 draft…heehee…the Buffalo Bills select J.P. Losman….heehee.  Now that’s a pokey!

DolphinsLaughingWheatley

And that brings us to the Cheats. If you listen to the National Media you will hear that Belicheat can do no wrong. The same media will tell you the Cheats play by the rules. But the laughing Dolphin doesn’t buy that. While Belicheat has avoided disaster in the 1st round, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th rounds are littered with disappointments.  Aaron Hernandez, Laurence Maroney, Chad Jackson, Shawn Crable, Kevin O’Connell and Brandon Tate are all examples of these misses.  But for this blog I’m going with Terrence Wheatley.  After 2007 the Patriots missed on a ton of defensive backs and Wheatley jumps out as the biggest miss.  That’s Patriot Pokey!

Players that find their way out of the NFL in a few years are not the only way to judge busts.  After all, the average NFL career is not very long.  Sometimes teams just miss at a better player at the position they drafted.  Like in 1983 with the New Jests on the clock with the 24th pick of the draft.  As all of you know, the Jests used the pick on Quarterback Ken O’Brien.

O’Brien wasn’t half bad.  He put up some big numbers on some jests teams with bad defenses.  But three picks after O’Brien was selected the Dolphins selected a Hall of Famer to play Quarterback for them.  Pokey works in mysterious ways. For decades the Jests will wonder why they took O’Brien over the Great Dan Marino.

OBrienandPokey

SealofPokey2

Who knows who gets poked in 2015.  Better hope its not the Dolphins.  But Hamsters have no prejudices.

This post was endorsed by Pokey.  Don’t be fooled by fakes.  Look for the Seal of Pokey!

I’d much rather read about the wasted draft picks other teams make than ours.

  2. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Good job Pig. The Phins appear to have gotten poked in 2013’s draft thus far outside of Sims.

  3. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

This was great Piggy! I really enjoyed this, and I f’n love the pic of Pokey in the black van. Awesome! Like Brian said, it’s so much more fun to revel in the misery of others, rather than our own.

  4. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Make sure you guys looks closely at the Kenny O’Brien pic
    you may miss the pokey

  5. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Dbolt, Jenkins is actually our best player from 2013 and the door is still open for a few more guys. This year will tell a lot about whether it closes or not.

Oh yeah, our kicker is also from that draft. LOL

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I knew I was forgetting someone else, Jenkins, thanks for the reminder on him.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I guess we will see what happens with Jordan
right now its a bunch of rumors

I agree that Jenkins has been the best pick so far
Sims has his good points too

Taylor & Davis still have potential – but I tend to be really patient

Even if Strugis was great fromhere on out – I think the first 2 years made the pick a bad one

when you think about cap room and draft picks in the 2013 season, Ireland’s last year here may have been his worst
I guess time will tell, some of those players still have a chance to work out well, including Jordan

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

2013 was definitely Ireland’s worst year. 2012 he was bad with the WRs so he made up for it with a spending spree in 2013. That didn’t pan out so well. He also did a bad job with the OL in 2013 so that Hickey had to put a huge emphasis on the OL in his first season.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

If the rumor of possibly flipping Jordan for Mychal Kendricks is true at least we’ll get a starting MLB and eliminate it from draft needs.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

With that said I’m not positive that Mychal can man MLB.

  6. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Good write up, Piggy. Funny stuff.

  7. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Piggy, Sturgis was a 5th rd comp pick, I didn’t think it was such a bad idea. But Sturgis has not been the kicker I believe they envisioned. Hopefully he’s ready to up his game as well.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Sturgis seemed like a good pick during the pre-season of his rookie year, but once he had a few misses it seems like it has permanently given him a mental block.

  8. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Dbolt, is the Jordan for Kendricks trade a real rumor or just GD speculating?

  9. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Dbolt, meant to say Misi, Sheppard and Tripp.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s not out of the realm of possibility that Tripp plays MLB, he did play there last year on 2nd and 3rd teams.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Tannenbaum did say they needed to clear the roster of progress stoppers. Trusnik was one of those. Tripp could be a guy they are heavily counting on.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Jenkins played MLBS in college so still a possibility.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah I thought about that afterwards.

Good point on the progress stoppers.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Yeah he said you have to let the young guys take their early lumps in order to grow into the players you envisioned when bringing them in. Sounds like he wants the young guys to play versus maxed out vets like we’ve had these last few years.

  10. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Nicely Pig, much less traumatizing than our own busts. Didn’t realize the colopokey’s love of Jets QBs when back as far as Obrien. He inspect the innards of Broadway Joe too?

  12. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It was good to see both Albert and Davis show up yesterday with no crutches or braces. I think I saw Delmas in one of the pics wearing no protective gear too.

  13. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Dbolt, where and when did you see the Jordan for Kendricks rumors on social media? I thought it was solely my rumor/speculation idea. 😦

  14. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The one concern with trading for Mychal Kendricks is that he’s a UFA next year and we already have other players who will become UFAs like Vernon and Miller.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

True, but if he plays well, you could extend him before FA starts in 2016.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

How much cap can we keep adding in 2016? Tannehill, Suh’s big hit, other guys who are being paid. I think we have to rely on some lower salary guys.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

        Tim,
You save around $6 million in 2016 if Jordan is gone this year

  15. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

    Suh imagining Brady’s head!

  16. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Hendricks is one of the better young LBs in the game

I don’t know how good he will be
But he appears to be really versatile and will be a good fit for us

    I’m not confident in Misi/Tripp/Jenkins
    But I do like Jenkins
I just think we should add more competition to the group

It would be nice to have 1 less draft need too

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

And I think he can play Inside or outside
      I know Misi can too
And there is no reason to think Jenkins and Tripp can’t play both

It would be nice to have a few versatile LBs

But to be honest – IMO Kendricks would probably win and preseason competition handily and would be our best LB

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We already do have versatility at LB and I’m not sure you’re getting much of an upgrade in this draft. Obviously the bottom line is it doesn’t matter if Piggy is confident in our LBs, but the FO. 😉

Before the defense started breaking and wearing down we were 8th against the run and 2nd against the pass through 10 games. Not sure why MLB is such a concern for everyone?

  17. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Also in terms of the Kendrivks rumor
I’m almost positive Kendricks is on the trade block for the eagles

They acquired Kiko Alonso and extended Demaco Ryans

Some people think moving Kendricks (and Mathis) is part of Chip Kelly’s big plan

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Very possible. In their 3-4, it appears Alonzo and Ryans would be the ILBs.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

They have Brandon Graham and Connor Barwin as their starting OLB

They have Vinnie Curry playing behind throes guys

They are pretty deep at LB

  18. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Could be bullshit

But some one leaked the cheats schedule

    https://twitter.com/patriotssb49/status/590498340439138304

Week 2 they play in Miami of it’s true

  19. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Tim, I understand that point on paying too much. Seems Mr. T & Aponte are not letting too much hold them back. I don’t know, but yes, it is something that has to be part of the equation.

  20. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Tim

What makes you think the FO is confident in our LBs?

There is no reason to beleive that
You can argue the bottom line is how the FO feels about the unit for every position

    We may have versatile LBs
    We don’t have quality

I don’t think there is any question that we can do better at LB

I’m not sure why you so adverse to the idea of adding LBs
Jenkins/Misi/Tripp is a big leap of faith

    Why not bring in competition?

  21. jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

Tannenbaum did say they needed to clear the roster of progress stoppers. Trusnik was one of those. Tripp could be a guy they are heavily counting on.
    ——————————————————————-
Didn’t he play all the LB positions last year because of all the injuries to that group plus he is a excellent ST player

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

He did, but I’m going by what Tannenbaum said. He is essentially you can’t develop young guys or truly know what you have if they aren’t getting reps with a maced out vet who might presently hold an ever so slight advantage over them.

      • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

maybe we can a draft choice for the guy before he collects a big contract with a team that see’s upside in him

  22. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Dbolt, but what is Kendricks going to be asking for in 2016 when he’s a UFA?

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Not sure, but would be more affordable than people think. I think maybe anywhere between 4-6 per year.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Just saying it’s another contract we have to get done along with Vernon and Miller unless we move on from one of them. I doubt we let Vernon walk after trading Jordan unless he decides to totally regress which I don’t see happening.

  23. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Aaron Hernandez never failed an NFL drug test even though everyone said he smoked weed daily and now it is being reported he was addicted to angel dust.

A man who knew Hernandez and asked not to be identified, said: ‘He was regularly high or out of his mind on Angel Dust.

‘People who were in his circles knew about it and we would talk about how it turned him into a punk. He was consistently aggressive, arrogant and unpleasant.

‘His dope man would bring it to his house and he would roll it in with some weed and smoke it with his friends.

‘He got so full of himself that he sometimes stopped caring if people saw him doing it and he would be told to go outside because restaurant owners were worried about their licenses.

‘I guess he was a d**head before because all that fame and money went to his head. But the drugs made him turn out to be a monster. Few people liked him. They just went with everything to keep him under control.’

Only friends Hernandez has now are the ones he makes behind bars.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      LOL

Just saying if they’re really high on Jenkins, are nowhere near as down on Misi as fans always are and have a much higher opinion of Tripp, then it changes things quite a bit.

  26. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Pig — Interesting on the Pat’s schedule if true. They’d get us in the cold but we’d get them in the heat.

  28. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

GD, Matt Light knew what Hernandez was all about and said he wasn’t a fan of his lifestyle. So there is no way nobody else on the team including Belichick, the coaches, Brady and other players didn’t know.

Former Missouri and Oklahoma WR Dorial Green-Beckham is visiting the Chiefs on Tuesday, according to Ian Rapoport.
Green-Beckham previously visited the Bengals, 49ers and Rams. He reportedly turned down a visit with the Cowboys. Perhaps DGB feels he will be off the board by the time the Cowboys select at 27. The Bengals are an interesting addition to the list, as the other teams have been linked to receivers.

    ——–
There are quite a few good “Will” LB options in the draft and some 3-4 OLB “Jack” types that intrigue but you are certainly right about MLB. Some of these MLB options are some of the lightest MLB options in a while and are built more like OLB.

  40. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Last year the highest ranked ILB was C.J. Mosely at 6.42. The highest this year is 5.8 with Kendricks, Dawson and McKinney. There is more depth this year with 7 ILBs ranked between 5.8 and 5.4 and the next ranked ILB last year was Preston Brown at 5.36 in the 3rd round – he did have 109 tackles for the Bills though.

But you can see it’s not a special class. Jordan Tripp who was listed as an OLB lasted year was ranked 5.16 and was a 5th rd pick. I would not be surprised if most if not all of these ILBs were available in the 2nd through 4th rounds.

Commentary on an early theme: Trusnik is NOT a progress stopper. A progress stopper is a marginal veteran with a big salary who’s ego and/or salary cap number dictates that they need to be a starter ahead of a young guy who’s ready to take the next step. Trusnik is not that guy. He’s a guy who will start, or play 3rd string, and dominate on ST for a reasonable salary while never complaining if a rookie gets to play ahead of him. That’s NOT a progress stopper. That’s a team player an in an era where your team is going to commit a large percentage of it’s cap to just a few individuals, he’s the kind of team player you MUST have if you’re going to compete in this league.

Trusnik was a role player, he handled that position well. They chose not to re-sign him when they felt they could replace him with a cheaper rookie pickup that can play ST’s and fill the part time role at LB. I cant say i blame them, but yes, he wasnt a progress stopper, he was more of role player who got too expensive for what the FO wants to pay for that role.

What up people? Busy day today. Just coming in one after the other.

  57. D's avatar D says:

Ive said it plenty of times, there are not great 4-3 ILB’s this year. None that can come in and start right away/beat Misi out of that position. I dont care how much people want Misi back at SLB, we wont have good enough by start of the year to do that. There are, however, a bunch of pretty good prospects. I like McKinney personally but he most likely needs to start at SLB or rotate at an OLB spot until he acclimates to the NFL. I think he will be a MLB one day but it wont be day 1. I think possibly could be there before end of the year, but that just depends on how quickly he picks things up. Having Suh does help that transition, but Perryman, Dawson, Anthony, and even Kendricks likely have to start same place.

  58. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I keep coming back to this – with Shelby, Fede and McCain, Jordan is expendable. With Suh now on board along with Mitchell, there will be less snaps for Shelby and Fede to play inside and guys like Johnson and Francis etc. will likely get some snaps there. Having depth is great, but sometimes there just aren’t enough snaps to get everyone in the game so that means not active on game day for some. Philbin has said he wants Coyle to simplify the defense so guys can just go play. That could mean less formations and rotations. Just some food for thought.

So did Jordan show up on day 2?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I agree 100%. I feel no need to appease him, he needs to produce, or he’s done here. I would trade him to move up to get an impact player if that was possible, without a wory in the world about what he might become elsewhere. He hasn’t done it here, and I don’t think he ever will.

      • D's avatar D says:

Same reasons you give for why we are at our end with him is why we cant expect trading him to move us up into the top 10. Again, Kelley is our best shot, packaged with our second could get us back into the first where we can take a second 1st rounder. Optimally that could mean landing a top teir WR and your boy Collins one day 1. That would be a pretty good day but then the drought begins totally bypassing day 2.

Don’t think any of the young guys have shown their close to him communication wise & therefore he’s a needed asset right now

  61. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, Delmas coming off of a late season ending knee injury doesn’t make him a progress stopper to me. I think he’s a good influence in the locker room and in the film room for the young DBs, and could help us as the season goes on.

    • D's avatar D says:

He’s the definition of security blanket. He’s there if things dont pan out with Aikens, or something happens to him. If he starts the year, i doubt he will be by time season ends as they may try to phase in Aikens if he isnt quite ready before season starts.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

More than anything, I was just happy he was the only name I could come up with. Another sign these guys look towards the future.

  62. Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

I think you guys are underestimating Kendricks when assessing the ILB crop this year, and since I’m not a huge “I told you so” guy, I just want to put it out there right now. He’s got Zach Thomas instincts with better measurables. Behind a DL with Suh in it, he would be an all-pro, and if he’s used right (as 4/3 MLB) behind a decent 4 man front, he’s going to prove me right no matter where he goes.

Maybe it’s deep after that, but assesments stray way to far from the game tape these days, and there’s only one conclusion when you watch Kendricks play the game of football: He’s a stud.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m just going by where he’s ranked on NFL.com as opposed to last year’s draft. That doesn’t mean he won’t be a good player. It’s pre-draft evaluations and we have to use something to go by besides personal preference because that has blown up in people’s faces as well.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

I saw what you were going by. My point (that I made in my post) is that that number strays too far from the football film and overweights measurables. It always does.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

PS: football film is not personal preference. I’m not being argumentative, but I don’t want people to think I’m just touting him because he’s a Bruin. Have you seen me tout any other Bruins this offseason? I guess that’s proof I can be objective and tell you what I see in film, not what I root for on Saturdays.

  63. Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Dbolt, we don’t disagree on football stuff very often, but I can’t believe you lump Trusnik in with Wheeler and Ellerbe. There’s no comparison. Those 2 were overpaid underperforming vets with egos that demanded they be starters. Trusnik was none of those negative things and all the positives you could ask for from a low salary guy with a knack for special teams.

He doesn’t fit with those guys. At all. He’s moved on, I agree with D, I respect the decision they made to let him walk, but I did like the guy and he’s not a progress stopper in any way shape or form. If Trusnik beat out a young guy, the young guy didn’t deserve to be a starter. Period. (lol..I haven’t typed out my punctuation recently).

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

      Jahn,
You’re reading too much into it. They have young guys that are ready to take over those duties and are now on equal footing as Trusnick except they still have more room for growth. They didn’t try to resign him because they have young guy’s progressing and trying to resign him is what Tannenbaum was referring to as a progress stopping move. I like Trusnick much better than the other 2, but under the description they fall in the same category.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

I get that resigning him for big money would turn him into a progress stopper, but he was never that as a player when he played for the fins, and I don’t think it’s fair to retroactively label him with that (you gotta admit, it’s a negative label) just because he went onto the open market and got paid somewhere.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I do agree with that. I think Tripp replaces Trusnik right off the bat.

  64. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    D

Not necessarily, there’s always teams that think that they can make a guy work in their defense. He has top 5 pedigree, that was unanimous, so there’s a defensive coach somewhere that swears they can turn him into a beast.

  65. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Jahn, don’t take the Kendricks thing personally. I mentioned him in with Dawson and McKinney at 5.8 with no bias. I was just using a general tool that shows this is not considered a strong ILB class as opposed to previous drafts, it’s just not.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Not at all. I understand where you’re coming from. But what I do really want you to understand is that I’m not touting the guy because of some sort of homer bias. I might just have some experience from watching him play every Saturday that many here and many of the so-called “experts” for public consumption don’t, and I just like sharing what I know. I tend to share bad news too about Pac-10 players when I have it. Cheers!

  66. Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

That’s about all the time I had. I’m sorry I couldn’t wait around for responses. Just my opinions as always, and I respect all of yours as well!

  67. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Jahn, I’m not saying you’re being a Bruin homer. Everyone has their favorite prospects is what I meant. Film study is a personal preference though. Just like PFF sees things that others disagree with. It’s all objective on what people think they’re seeing.

    • D's avatar D says:

I have a lot of bias towards SEC players, simply because i watch so much of that divisions football i know these guys well. My bias doesnt stand in the way of judgement though because im not picking someone for me im picking someone i want to make our team better. Kendrick is the best start right away prospect, BUT he also isnt acclimated to speed of the game. He MAY be able to acclimate faster than others because he has great instincts, but i also think due to some physical limitations he also has the potential for a lower ceiling in terms of maximized ability. People can bring up Zach all day long, but simple fact is the odds are stacked against those players and only the very exceptional overcome those things and go on to be great. This isnt opinion its fact, for every success story like it there are several never got off the ground stories where the size and athletic limitations were too much for those players to overcome.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Fair point about the odds being against it, but his measurables are better than Zachs, not equal to it. So if he’s wired that same way (I tend to think MLBs and safeties are the easiest to spot instincts with) and has better measurables, I have no choice but to project him highly.

You want to talk about the Bruin’s QB? Different story. i wouldn’t draft the guy unless it was in the 3rd round or later. I just don’t think his game is going to translate.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

I don’t really think you and i would watch the same film and disagree too frequently about whether or not a player made a play.

It’s not “personal preference” for the most part, it’s actually analyzing real football instead of combine numbers….and the goal is not to draft athletes, it’s to draft successful football players.

I respect the opinions of people who have this experience on this board, and defer to it on players I’m not familiar with. Can’t insist anyone respect my opinion the same way, but that’s what it is. Experience watching a player play football.

      • D's avatar D says:

I trust your opinion, and for what its worth i see what you see in him from a instincts, and ability standpoint. For me its a gamble with McKinney but i like the potential and it outweights what is more of a risk than taking a guy like Kendricks. I also agree with you that he will be a good player. Im not disputing those things. Its probably more an argument over what ya would rather have bird in hand or two in the bush….im into the bush… 🙂

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

LOL…fair enough. I’m into bush myself.

  68. Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

    Oh, and go Warriors!

  69. D's avatar D says:

Mike, i just dont see it. More power to them if they can swing it, but i dont see him being an attractive enough lure to do that. The teams picking at that level could easily get a guy with better potential a guy with 4 years on a rookie wage contract and whom they can develop up their own way. If i were a GM of any of those teams i would laugh at the dolphins if thats all they were offering. Maybe Jordan another pick and swapping firsts, but then if im the GM of the dolphins i cant do that either.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I didn’t say that was all we would be offering, but if we could trade our 1st, Jordan and 4th, rather than give up next years 1st, it would be worth it.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

I think it’s fun to think about, and especially with Chip Kelly being the other end of the hypothetical trade, but I agree, he doesn’t have a lot of trade value these days. 2 years and nothing but a drug suspension and a stint in rehab kind of offsets his draft status.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Also one more slip up and his suspension is probably 12 games.

      • D's avatar D says:

Funny you should say that. The first time i typed it up i had a much longer version that actually pointed out those things lol. Chip Kelley is a maverick and if he likes a player he’s going to get that player. He still likes Jordan from what i have heard so there is more sway there. Giants have 0 reason to make that trade and i wouldnt give up any more picks this year to move up. Id be more willing to trade up using next year’s 1 if we move up significantly enough to get in the range of White/Cooper.

We just see the connotation differently. I don’t see it as a negative, but just a reality of aging players. Many players weren’t brought back due to this. Like I said I like Trusnick and don’t lump him as the same type of player as the others.

  76. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

ESPN’s Mike Sando says that it’s exceedingly hard to find an adequate comparison for West Virginia WR Kevin White.
“There isn’t much precedent for junior college transfers with White’s physical ability breaking out the way he did this past season,” he wrote. “Cordarrelle Patterson was one. The four other receivers on [Mel] Kiper’s Big Board this year played between 37 to 41 games at the major college level, compared to 24 games for White.” Those other receivers all had higher yards-per-catch averages and more receptions for first downs by percentage. A team in the top 10 is going to roll the dice on his athletic upside anyway.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Patterson was nowhere near as productive. What most have said is the light went on, he grew up and into his body and the tape shows the difference. I watched a lot of video of him and you see a big WR with elite speed imposing his will on guys. Not saying he’ll dominate right away in the NFL, but I’d be shocked if he didn’t produce right away. Patterson is still struggling as a WR.

  77. D's avatar D says:

    My idea for draft.

Trade up, using next years 1st if we can find a buyer at 3 or 5, hell throw in Jordan with it if it will seal the deal. Take Cooper. If cant find partner at 3, and he’s taken at 4, stand at 14 and shoot for Parker. Parker is gone by 14, trade back and pick up at least 3rd, preferably a 2nd. Id also try to work a trade with Philly, Jordan and our pick 47 for their pick 20, or Jordan straight up for their pick 52..

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I’m still not excited by Parker. Vikings likely take him anyways to reunite him with Teddy, which would be smart. Also hate to trade away next year’s 1st just to get Cooper.

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

with that, I rather trade down into the low 20’s, Eagles @ 23 hopefully. Have a deal with them for their Kendricks & our Jordan, plus whatever pick they agree on 2nd or 3rd round.
In low 20’s we could possibly land Perriman/DGB who’s not far too off from White…IMO.
Then in 2nd go for best of OL/DB/TE/RB

Ive heard Minn’s biggest need and what they most likely take is a DT. I see your point and a WR whome a fledgling QB is use to makes sense, but system they run may be better for Perriman/DGB than Parker. They have a guy like Parker there in Cordarelle, i would think they would be better off getting a guy who is a better deep receiver if they went that route. ———————————-
Coates could be the best receiver of this draft IF he develops…. Coates is pretty much Cooper without all the refinement, i just dont know how much i trust Coates as far as him ever reaching his full potential, and its nearly impossible to know given the offense that was run while he was there and the shitty QB play from Marshall. I cant really tell if he took plays off/coasted, which to me would be a very bad sign as far as expectation of development, or if he just looked like that because of the offense he was in. Plays that was away from him, he didnt sell it as if he could be a target, and this happened a good bit and he didnt go full out as a run blocker. Cooper is all out on every play, he’s refined, and consistant. That is a rare thing.
