ABSOLUTE PERFECTION: THE 1972 MIAMI DOLPHINS

GAME 14: DEC. 16, 1972 – BALTIMORE at MIAMI

September 17 was the day the Miami Dolphins played their first game in the 1972 regular season.  It’s fair to say not one single person was thinking about a PERFECT SEASON.  Yet, by December 16, in the historic Orange Bowl, ABSOLUTE PERFECTION was on the minds of everyone.  The 80,010 ticket holders who were at the stadium, and the many millions who were watching this saturday afternoon broadcast were all thinking the same thing: CAN THEY DO IT?  It had been a truly amazing journey. On a scorching opening day in Kansas City the underdog Dolphins rolled to an impressive 17-0 halftime lead on their way to a 20-10 win over the Chiefs. The following week, Miami blew out Houston 34-14.  Then, at Minnesota, the underdog Dolphins trailed 14-6 well into the fourth quarter.  A booming 51-yard Yepremian field goal was followed by a last gasp Griese to Mandich touchdown pass that saved Miami’s Perfect Season with a 16-14 win.

Following a 27-17 win at Shea Stadium over the hated Jets, Miami had to suffer the shock of losing Bob Griese in a 24-10 win over San Diego.  Calm, cool, Earl Morrall would prove he was much more than an ordinary back-up quarterback.  In week #6, the Dolphins barely escaped with a 24-23 nail biter over the Bills.  Weeks 7 and 8 would bring relatively easier wins over Baltimore and Buffalo.  Week #9 would see the Don of Miami win his 100th game in very convincing fashion with a 52-0 blowout over the Patriots.

A heart-pounding classic followed on week 10 when Earl Morrall and the Dolphins came from behind in the final quarter to edge the hated Jets 28-24 in an ultra-noisy Orange Bowl.  Routine victories over St. Louis and New England set the stage for a match-up against the very strong New York Giants in Yankee Stadium on week 13.  The “No Name Defense” forced SIX New York turnovers on the way to a 23-13 road victory.  The 1972 Miami Dolphins were now 13-0.  A perfect regular season was now within their grasp.  Where else to play this game other than the historic Orange Bowl?

The Baltimore Colts were the only thing standing between the Dolphins and a 14-0 perfect regular season.  Since losing to Miami in week 7, the Colts had gone 4-2, including a 35-7 win over Buffalo.  Aging John Unitas had been replaced by QB Marty Domres.  And the young Colts’ defense had shown signs of improvement.  But no one was going to stop the Dolphins today.

Miami’s Chalie Leigh returned the opening kickoff all the way to Miami’s 45 yard line.  Strong runs by Csonka and Morris ap_dolphins_071221_ssh-300x232got the Dolphins well into Colts’ territory.  Yepremian’s 40 yard field goal made the score 3-0 after one quarter.  Miami shut out the Colts 23-0 when they played in week 7.  The “No Name Defense” totally shut down Baltimore’s offense.  Young QB Marty Domres was having no luck this time, either.  Then, in the second quarter, an injury sent him to the sidelines.  Meanwhile, Morrall had engineered another successful drive.  Starting from Miami’s 20, Morrall patiently worked the running game spiced with an occasional pass.  A 21-yard dart to reliable Howard Twilley got Miami in scoring position.  From the 15, Morrall’s pass was intercepted!  Somehow, the ball was jarred loose and Twilley fell on it for the Dolphins!  A short pass, Morrall to Paul Warfield, produced a touchdown and a 10-0 Dolphins’ lead.

Unitas, subbing for the injured Domres, failed to ignite the Baltimore offense.  Miami maintained a 10-0 lead at halftime.  As the game progressed it was obvious Shula and his staff 8e75d553fa1aaf4538436a1bda4a8b0a2ceba22f1-300x221wanted to set the all-time NFL record for most yards gained rushing by a single team in a season.  Early in the third quarter the new record was set and the game was stopped.  Mr. Dick Gallagher, Director of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, was given the ball that was used to break the 1935 NFL team rushing record set by the Detroit Lions.  Today, that ball sits on display at the Hall of Fame in Canton.  When this game was over,  the 1972 Miami Dolphins achieved 2960 yards rushing, 75 yards more than the old record!  And they had the honor of being the ONLY team in NFL history to have TWO  runners reach the 1,000 yard plateau in the same season (Csonka 1117 yards and Morris 1000 yards).

That little ceremony in the third quarter was one of the highlights of the second half.  Another occurred when Bob Griese made a cameo appearance in the final quarter.  He completed 2 of 3 passes.  Could Griese be ready for the playoffs?  Miami went on to register a 50-yard field goal by Yepremian in the third quarter and a 35 yard field goal in the final quarter.  For the second time this season, Miami had shut out the Colts, this time by a 16-0 score.  Head coach Don Shula presented the entire offensive line with a game ball to mark this historic day.  Tight ends Marv Fleming and Jim Mandich; Guards Larry Little and Bob Kuechenberg; tackles Norm Evans, Doug Crusan and Wayne Moore and center Jim Langer all were given game balls. Truly, this had been a total team effort!

Now it was on to the second season, the playoffs.  The pain of losing to Joe Namath and the Jets in Super Bowl III was still in Shula’s gut.  And the embarrassing 24-3 loss to Tom Landry’s Cowboys in last year’s Super Bowl was still fresh in Shula’s mind.  He knew there was only one way to overcome those memories – – – He HAD to WIN the Super Bowl!

Next up: the first 1972 playoff game against a tough and determined Cleveland Browns team.   The 1972 Miami Dolphins were now 14-0.

HAD AN UNFORGETTABLE TIME at last night’s Montreal at Tampa Bay playoff game!! –Our seats were 2 rows up on the blue line in the upper deck. The pregame hoopla was MIND BOGGLING!! Crowd was a bit like the Jets at Miami in the Orange Bowl!! –I’d HIGHLY recommend fans in the Tampa Bay area going to these games. It’s an experience you’ll always treasure!!

My sincerest thanks to all of you who’ve enjoyed all 14 regular season games of ABSOLUTE PERFECTION!! – – Trust me, the best is yet to come!!! –Talk to you when I get home from work tonight!!

beating the colts to finish regular season 14-0 was poetic justice for Shula. If you remember OD, I became a fan when my dad and uncles were cheering for Unitas against Fins in afc championship (Colts went on to SB vs Dallas).. I just wanted to ‘rebel’… lol Fan ever since… and was a BIG TIME Colts hater, even when they moved out of the division.

  7. stangerx says:

Undefeated and onto the playoffs! Thanks as always OD……..and glad you enjoyed the game.

In addition to having a great deal of disposal income the Jets fans also are so clever. That is hilarious and so original I can’t stop laughing. By the way I’m being ver sarcastic. If they were being at least original you could respect that. Maybe they should post all of the success they have had in the superbowl in over 45 years On the billboard. It’s cheap because it’s blank. Now that’s clever.

  13. Tim Knight says:

    Good read once again, OD.

  14. Rhino says:

    Stanger:
A’s and Pirates need to MERGE so their combined payrolls can put the ‘new team’ into the 15th or so rank for payroll. Maybe keep some favorite players. But Oakland Pirates sounds too much like the Raiders… and Pittsburgh Athletics is too close to the original Philadelphia A’s. Maybe in the middle in OKC.. the Pirathletes. I was really hoping for a small budget WS the last few years between A’s and Pirates.

    • stangerx says:

LMAO — I have another suggestion for the combined team…….the “StangJahns”

And yeah, part of the reason I turned from baseball was the lack of a salary cap. Seems a losing proposition when the Yankees payroll is seven times more than your team’s. If that was the case for the Phins……I might start following cricket.

  15. Tim Knight says:

One of the best HRs I ever saw was Daryl Strawberry’s shot off the scoreboard at Bush Stadium to break a 0-0 tie in the 11th inning.

  16. Mike E. says:

    14 and Oh baby!

Thanks again OD, for bringing us back to the best time to be a Miami Dolphins fan. Hopefully, we’re on our way back now!

  17. Mike E. says:

Nationals are nipping at the Mets heels, and are on a tear now. Mets need to regroup, and steady that ship.

    • Tim Knight says:

Their lack of big bats and defense is rearing its ugly head. The offense is becoming very tough to watch. I’ve had enough with Daniel Murphy. He is a horrible defensive player.

      • Mike E. says:

It’s tough. He is definitely a defensive liability, and if he’s not hitting, there’s no place for him. Not sure why they don’t bring up Matt Reynolds. I guess they feel like they owe Murph a long leash. I like Murph, but when he’s not hitting, he kills you.

    • jetsssuck says:

Marlins recovered from bad start. Going through a mini slump right now with relief pitching but watch out this team can be dangerous.

  18. Tim Knight says:

Mike E, Murph has been grounding into double plays and last night he acts like he has forever to throw the ball to first so he lofts it and the guy beats it out. I’m like dude, do you have any fucking instincts?!!! Then he has that face like “oh I did it again.”

I’ve also seen enough of Nieuwenhuis. I’ve yet to see him have a good at bat or get a hit.

    • Mike E. says:

I understand. I know the organization likes Murphy, so like I said, I think they’re giving him a long leash, hoping if he starts hitting, that his fielding can be overlooked. Niewenhuis is a disappointment.

  19. Mike E. says:

jetssuck – I didn’t think the Marlins were as bad as they were playing, and I was hoping the Mets were as good they were playing. They (Mets) need to play .500 ball for a while or better to get things back in order.

    • jetsssuck says:

how’s your team doing in softball. I see the Florida Gators softball team is still #1 after winning national championship last year. Here’s a amazing feat my late cat witnessed 10 TEN championships of teams we rooted for.

      • Mike E. says:

We were 3-1, until 2 weeks ago we were short about 6 guys, so I got a few replacements, we just had 10 to play a double header, and it was UGLY! We were massacred. We faced the best pitcher, so there’s that, but we were awful in every phase. We didn’t pitch well enough, we couldn’t hit well enough, and we fielded worse than the previous two. We were “mercied” both games, 12-2, and 14-1. Like I said, UGLY! We had a BYE week for Mother’s Day, so we go into this Sunday’s games at 3-3.

  20. Ken says:

So Dolphins found not guilty for tampering with Suh but Pats guilty for doctoring footballs. Ah, it’s a good day.

  21. jahndoh says:

    StangJahns eh? Why’d I get 2nd billing? 😛

  25. finfanrob says:

    jahn

i remember when Marino was contemplating retiring the talk was (and who knows since Marino never said it himself) but the talk was he didnt want to go out like another HOF qb playing horrible. i dont know if it was Montana cause didnt he take the chiefs to the playoffs? i always thought it was Unitas cause he was so bad in S.D. Figured it was either that or namath, i believe he went to the rams at the end of his career and stunk it up, but namath was never mentioned in the same breath as Unitas or Marino so i doubt it was him

Namath on the Rams, Unitas on the Chargers

yeah, i know i just said that. now what, i get a $350 bill for you repeating the same thing I just said.

    • Mike E. says:

I’m surprised he had to time to witness anything, you’d think he was too busy laughing about the trade we made for him.

    • Tim Knight says:

After Spygate they couldn’t win the Super Bowl and started losing in the playoffs. Then they win this year and cheating is involved again. No pattern here. But yes, the NFL is coming down on the Pats because they win so much. LMAO!!!!

  28. getterdone says:

I wonder is that Terrell Williams working directly with him?

  29. finfanrob says:

lmao speaking of the bucs. they are putting doug williams in their ring of honor. so fucking buc like. a qb that was something like 73/73 td to int ratio and a record of 31-34-1 regular season record, and 1-3 in the playoffs (not that i think the w/l record is up to the qb but they had a fantastic def in his day) and they are putting him up there with leroy selmon. why? cause he had one decent season with the redskins when the redskins had the hogs and just ran over every team. the bucs are such an embarrassment to tampa

oh yeah, i sure hope the fins put sammie smith in their ring of honor soon.

  30. Tim Knight says:

GDP, let’s not forget Mitchell. He plays with a non-stop motor and has the quicks to blow up the backfield. I think Suh opens up his game.

    • getterdone says:

I didn’t forget Big Mitch, I just had to keep the rhyme I was bustin short…lol

We should have a devastating DL.
Besides the big interior guys making for single man vs. the Ends, our LB’s or Secondary blitzes will have more clear shots to disrupt key situations.
We’ll be forcing most teams to play max protect, then our safeties can play down in the box.
Limit the opponents options on Offense. Make them 1 dimensional !

      • Tim Knight says:

Yeah the potential to be dominant is there. Who do you think wins the 4th DT spot? I’ll go with A. Johnson. Not sure if we keep 5. Wake, Vernon, Shelby and Fede at DE with McCain probably being a hybrid OLB/DE like someone else we know was suppose to be.

  31. getterdone says:

Tim, I agree A. Johnson has a slight edge, but I think Kamal Johnson and Deandre Coleman are right on his heels.
Kamal is very raw, didn’t get much PT as a senior, had issues, but the talent and body are there.

Coleman really interests me as a Phiilips type prospect out of Cal. He’s also 6’5, but a lil lighter 315. But he was very durable, I think he started most all his college games. So he won’t get the lazy label or injury prone label. He’s quick & can bull rush as well. If he can be coached up to not play too upright negating his leverage with his height, then I think he can be a nice rotational force and depth guy!

    • Tim Knight says:

A.J. Francis 6-5 330 and Ellis McCarthy 6-5 325 are also in the mix.

I like Johnson as a backup to Mitchell, more of that quick shoot the gap type who also has good strength.

      • getterdone says:

Yep, of course Francis is in the mix…but he needs to show consistency NOW. He’s been in the program long enough.

“We’d play New England. When I was in Miami my first year, Jay Fiedler was playing and I was on the sideline. Somehow this beat-up ball from the ball boy was getting thrown in on offense for New England, yet when we were on offense this orange, brand-new ball was getting thrown in.”

Other interesting things I learned researching QB suspensions: Dion Jordan is only DE in history to be suspended 3x.
    😦

    • stangerx says:

Far as I’m concerned…I’m not concerned. He’s got one year left on his rookie deal. An accountant like ffr would call that a write off.

      • getterdone says:

WRONG! A write off you usually get something in exchange, as a credit of the loss reflecting in your net gain.
Miami most likely will never gain anything for the loss investment into Dion Jordan.
(well we did gain by finally booting Jeffro’s ass) lol 🙂

      • getterdone says:

        ^ lost^ investment

      • stangerx says:

Sorry — wasn’t going into exact tax stuff. Was more saying…..”it is what it is” and commenting on how trying to puppy him for one year might not be worth it.

I was just saying time to let him go.

  36. getterdone says:

Stanger, I agree…just BB. Jordan is a disappointment. But crap happens.
What can make up for it, is surprise players really breaking out and playing to the utmost of their abilities and beyond! 🙂

    Go Phins!

    • We can’t get back that wasted pick….one of many Jeff Ireland blunders during his tenure.

      • Tim Knight says:

I blame Jordan, not Ireland. Some other team would have drafted Jordan no later then top 10 if not #4 to the Eagles. Jordan is the fuck up here.

      • stangerx says:

I will blame Ireland for trading up. That was not the move we needed, even if I understood Jordan’s potential……even if we now know what happened after.

  37. Tim Knight says:

I’ve moved past Jordan as if he’s not part of the team anymore. I think we’ll draft an edge rusher next year with Wake getting up there in age and we’ll have to pay Vernon.

  38. Tim Knight says:

GD, agreed Francis has to put it all together this year. There should be some good competition in camp at DT this year.

    • getterdone says:

Yeppers, lots of great camp battles at many positions. Will be one of the fiercest camps yet. Which will have prepared the team well for the tough road start to the schedule.

      • Tim Knight says:

Agreed. On defense I like the competition we have going on at LB and in the secondary. On offense I think WR is pretty much set along with TE except for maybe the 3rd and/or 4th guy. The biggest battles will be on the OL and at RB.

  39. wyoming85 says:

    YA
I wouldn’t be paying attention either!

  40. finfanrob says:

what a scum bag kraft is. just heard the fund me account for their fine is up to like 15K. what an ass that he is leaving that out there and actually letting some idiot fans put money into it. either just stand up and tell fans to stop putting their money into the account, pay the fine or put the money in the fund me account so no one else will.

but then again, what do you expect from a cheater.

  41. stangerx says:

“Under fourth-year head coach Joe Philbin, only three position players — quarterback Ryan Tannehill, Jonathan Martin and Ja’Wuan James — have started in Week 1 as rookies. ”

Have a feeling this year we just might double down on that.

    Parker more likely than not.
Jordan Phillips (mainly cause he’s a run down specialist)
Jamil Douglas — wild card, especially if we bring in a cap cut guy, but he could be there too.

    • Tim Knight says:

That keeps getting repeated as there is a rhyme or reason for it when I look at it like who else should have or could have?

      • stangerx says:

Wasn’t even thinking from that angle. Just thinking this year is going to bust the curve on that. Even if it is just two of them.,

  42. stangerx says:

  43. Tim Knight says:

Stanger, I’ve seen the rookie starting thing mentioned in articles by the local media like 15 times. LOL

    • stangerx says:

Cool that you did. I knew we were likely to have starters out of this class, just didn’t realize how few we have had as of opening day since Philbin took over. So it was at least news to me.

      • Tim Knight says:

It gets portrayed as Philbin doesn’t start or play rookies which isn’t true. First off players have to be worthy, 2nd many rookies have played roles, just not all starters.

      • stangerx says:

No doubt. Was just trying to point out that we might have three rookie starters this year.

Former Miami Dolphins QB A.J. Feeley: I saw Patriots use doctored footballs in 2004

  46. getterdone says:

Former NFL quarterback A.J. Feeley says the Patriots were breaking the rules about properly preparing footballs long before Deflategate.

Feeley said on 97.5 The Fanatic that when he was playing for the Dolphins in 2004, he saw Patriots quarterback Tom Brady using old, broken-in balls at a time when NFL rules said that teams had to use new balls provided by the league.

“Prior to Tommy and Peyton Manning going to the league and saying, ‘Let us doctor our balls’ we used to all play with the same balls,” Feeley said. “Somehow this beat-up ball from the ball boy was getting thrown in on offense for New England, yet when we were on offense this orange brand new ball was getting thrown in.”

Feeley says Brady was getting an advantage, and Feeley had a problem with it.

“He’s getting his own balls thrown in on offense,” Feeley said. “That was an issue to me at the time. . . . We saw it then.”

    • Tim Knight says:

Everyone seems to forget that Brady and Peyton asked for special ball treatment years ago so for Tommy baby to say he never heard of any such a thing is a lie right there. Lying always comes back to haunt you.

  47. Tim Knight says:

Stanger, I think a lot of rooks and 2nd year guys will be playing this year.

    • stangerx says:

Could not agree more. Was a darn fine draft class last year. And we might get three rooks in there as well, even if that’s the high-side.

  48. Tim Knight says:

So that Boston newspaper article with the 4 trophies, was that suppose to get the New England area to have a jerkfest together? The rest of the country laughs at your lame attempts to make excuses. LOL

  49. Brian in NY says:

I honestly can’t wait for the season to start. I’m going to the game @Washington, and I’m hoping to see Suh’s first sack and forced fumble, and Parkers first reception as well as first TD to boot. That, and a Dolphins bowout of course!

  50. stangerx says:

Dolphin re-sale ticket prices are “18% above the 2014 secondary market average before the season started for Miami. It’s also the most expensive initial average price TiqIQ has tracked for the Dolphins since 2010.”

    Apparently the Phins are hot.

    • Brian in NY says:

      That sucks.

    • getterdone says:

Damn, that does suck for us Po Folk.

    • stangerx says:

That’s only for stubhub and such. We get the group section in the nosebleeds and it is face value with a discount. Only thing you are really losing is the chance to pick up a ticket late on the cheap……but that still might be there too, but the risk would be there as well.

  51. Brian in NY says:

    Tim,
My brother is a Giants fan, and we were going to try to go to the game but a Monday night is a rough one as I’d have to take two days off of work.

    • Tim Knight says:

Yeah I’m making it a mini-vacation. Will spend the weekend at my in-laws in Jupiter and then drive to the hotel on Monday, get settled in and go to the game that night. Drive back up on Tuesday and fly back that day as well if we can work it out like that.

    • stangerx says:

My best advice — bring your bro to the fest and let him find his way to a Giants game at home. My guess is he’ll have a much better time overall. And the Dec hotel prices down here……you get the idea.

      • Tim Knight says:

Nah man, it’s a done deal, 6 of us are going, he and 3 of his Giant fan friends and myself and my friend who is also Dolphin fan.

He already has season tickets to the Giants along with my wife. He goes to every home game already.

      • stangerx says:

Cool enough. Glad to give whatever advice I can on hotels, eating spots, stadium parking, etc if you need.

  52. Tim Knight says:

Thanks, Stanger. My brother-in-law is already looking into places to stay. He’s good at this sort of stuff but any advice is appreciated.

I responded: “I guess your Bruins didn’t make the Playoffs because they don’t know how to DEFLATE A PUCK!”—-Smattering of applause and laughter by Lightning fans near us in the hallway!!

WILL BE ROOTING for Washington in tonight’s 7th and deciding playoff game against the Rangers in New York. Lightning will have home ice advantage if Washington wins, but NOT if New York wins.

  58. naplesfan2010 says:

from pro football focus article “10 best UDFAs on defense”
Zach Vigil, LB, Utah State, Miami Dolphins

Utah State’s Vigil was out second-highest graded linebacker in this class, with two eye-popping performances against Wake Forest and Air Force standing out. His work against the run was his calling card, finishing the year with a Run Stop Percentage of 12.9%, 10th in the class, while his total of 58 tackles resulting in defensive stops against the run was bettered only by TCU’s Paul Dawson.

Mike Hull, LB, Penn State, Miami Dolphins

Another linebacker who impressed against the run, Penn State’s Hull finished the year with a Run Stop Percentage of 13.1%, the seventh-best mark in this class, on his way to finishing 12th overall in our linebacker grades. He wasn’t just limited to standing out against the run, though, with his Yards Allowed Per Coverage Snap average a mere 0.31 yards, also the seventh-best in the class.

  59. naplesfan2010 says:

we got 4 UDFA guys on defense at LB who all run 4.6 40s so maybe they can get downfield fast on ST and knock shit out of a little return man

  60. getterdone says:

Between our DL & those heat seeking missles @ LB…No one, I repeat No on, will be running on us…Nor passing on us.

That’s the problem, Cassell sucks yet he was good with the cheats, maybe crapallo won’t benefit from the success others had, now that he has to play within the rules, so to speak.

  62. son of a son of a shula says:

Joe Montana has no history of deflated balls – just sayin’

  63. getterdone says:

Ravens signed CB Kyle Arrington to a three-year contract.
The Ravens had been the favorites for Arrington since his release from the Patriots. His signing adds depth to a secondary that lacked proven options behind Jimmy Smith (Lisfranc surgery) and Lardarius Webb.

    • steveccnv says:

I think even more than spygate/deflategate the cheats benefit from illegal picks, so their QBs can play pitch and catch.

Been asked what I think of the punishment for the Pats and Tom Brady. As much as I try, I struggle to give an unbiased opinion. Call it Love for my Dolphins or my dislike for the Patriots. I can tell you that I didn’t like Brady’s brash behavior during that last interview.

  69. naplesfan2010 says:

Did anybody see/hear/read Terry Bradshaw’s rant about Brady? I heard he called him a liar and a cheater. Not sure where he got that from LOL but you know Terry calls it like he sees it.

    • son of a son of a shula says:

He just tied Terry with the 4th SB, but all Terry ever got for his trouble was to be called a dumbass. Like Shula, he should be pissed.

  70. getterdone says:

Many players decide to declare for the NFL Draft early, but many of them do not realize how hard it is too make a roster. In the 2014 NFL Draft, a record number of 98 underclassmen, plus four more players with degrees, were granted eligibility for the draft. Of the 102 early entrants, 38 went undrafted (37 percent).
This year 24 of the 84 players went undrafted. The numbers are down quite a bit, thanks to the new rule in college football, but this still could have been prevented.

Here’s the full list of undrafted early entrants:

» DE Deion Barnes, Penn State
    » RB B.J. Catalon, TCU
    » WR Zach D’Orazio, Akron
» WR DaVaris Daniels, Notre Dame
    » SS Durell Eskridge, Syracuse
    » WR George Farmer, USC
» LB Max Flores, Northern Colorado
    » CB Jacoby Glenn, UCF
    » WR Deontay Greenberry, Houston
    » FS Chris Hackett, TCU
    » WR Chris Harper, California
» RB Dee Hart, Colorado State
    » RB Braylon Heard, Kentucky
» DT David Irving, Iowa State
    » WR Nigel King, Kansas
    » DT Ellis McCarthy, UCLA
    » OT Patrick Miller, Auburn
    » OG Tyler Moore, Florida
» WR Jaquel Pitts, Trinity International
» OLB Darien Rankin, North Carolina
    » TE Jean Sifrin, Massachusetts
» WR Tacoi Sumler, Appalachian State
» LS Easton Wahlstrom, Arizona State
» RB Trey Williams, Texas A&M

Dolphins have 3 on the above list now in camp.

    • steveccnv says:

      I only recognize Dee Hart.

    • steveccnv says:

Declaring for the draft isn’t only about getting drafted, sure they all expect to, but a lot has to do with money, and not just right away, but the 2nd contract that comes a yr earlier. They also have agents pissing in their ear telling them how great they are.

      • Ken says:

Then they have the wrong agent. There is a process thru the league that has a draft advisory board that gives an assessment of where a prospective underclassmen would get drafted if they declared. It’s not fool proof but it’s a pretty good idea. The point is there is enough info out there for these guys to make a good well informed decision rather than just listening to some agent try to sweet talk them into signing on with them.

      • steveccnv says:

And family members, parents, trying to get a piece of the pie.

      • steveccnv says:

And there’s also the what if you get hurt your Sr. yr?

  71. son of a son of a shula says:

The next time Goodell is caught schmoozing with Kraft the other 31 should demand his resignation. This shit has gone on for far too long.

    • steveccnv says:

I agree, and lets see what happens with the appeal, that’s where I’ll really be livid. cry brady is said to be putting together a dream team of lawyers, OMG, if that fuck gets it reduced.

  72. Ken says:

I was listening to Marciellus Wiley on Lebatard’s show on my ride home and he had the best expression of why from a player’s point of view that Brady should be punished. His quote was “I have never been mad at a player who beat me, but don’t ever cheat me.” That to me was the most articulate expression of why everything Brady and his supporters did, said, argued and what not is bullshit. If you can beat me then beat but don’t go outside the rules. That is what sports is supposed to be about.

    • son of a son of a shula says:

Therein lies why Shula pulls no punches.

      • Ken says:

Wiley said it too in the context of someone who didn’t win a SB ring. His point is that he is not angry at not winning a ring if the other team beat his fair and square. He can live with that. What gets him mad is if a team wins a SB by going outside the rules. He went on to say how he lost friends when he found out they were using PEDs. He wanted no part of anyone who was doing that.

  73. naplesfan2010 says:

    5.01 367 Ellis McCarthy DT UCLA 6’5 325 5.21 40 24 reps

  76. naplesfan2010 says:

    • Ken says:

This has been something that they have been tinkering with for a while. Remember last pre-season they were experimenting with the xp being a 43 yard kick. My opinion is that the game is doing just fine. Don’t mess with it.

      • steveccnv says:

I agree and hate all 3 proposals, especially #1, if the cheats propose something they’ve got an angle to exploit it.

    • son of a son of a shula says:

just make a TD worth 7 and not even have an extra point. What they are suggesting is ridiculous.

      • Ken says:

I like having the 2 point rule. It adds to the strategy of the game. If they do anything they should move the ball to the 1 instead of the 2 so as to encourage more 2 point attempts.

      • son of a son of a shula says:

True, I like the 2, I guess I’m for no changes
