The Fringe – Defensive End

The Fringe

Defensive End

by son of a son of a shula

The Miami Dolphins have seven players battling for a spot on the final roster at the Defensive End position. Sure locks include  starters Cameron Wake and Olivier Vernon while Derrick Shelby who is entering his fourth season and Terrence Fede a 7th round pick last year appear to have the inside track to round out the position. Fede offers versatility as a player who can move inside from time to time. Should the Dolphins carry five DE’s then the battle royale will be between Emmanuel Dieke, Ray Drew and Kendall Montgomery the fringe players.

In order for these fringe players to have a shot at making the team they will first and foremost have to become reliable Special Teams players while showing pass rushing skills and ability to set the edge when they are getting reps with the Defense. It’s entirely possible that two of these 3 players could find themselves as part of the practice squad as we move into the season.

Emmanuel “Too Tall” Dieke  #98

6’6 270 DE Georgia Tech

Dieke was an Undrafted Free Agent for the Giants coming out of Georgia Tech last year so he will be entering his second NFL training camp this year. Several years ago there was another DE the Giants picked up as an undrafted free agent, you may recall, and released him. Will Emmanuel Dieke have to go the way of the CFL the way Cameron Wake did? With Wake and Vernon entrenched as starters Dieke faces a similar situation in Miami as he did in camp last year with the New York Giants. The Giants had Mathias Kiwanuka, Damontre Moore, Jason Pierre-Paul, Robert Ayers in place making it very difficult for a UDFA to crack the squad.

SB Nation had this brief breakdown of Dieke last June:  Pegged as a player with great size, quickness, change of direction and work ethic, Dieke was signed as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Georgia Tech. Last year, Dieke recorded 28 tackles, two sacks, two tackles for a loss and one forced fumble in 13 games. In his four-year career, the 6-foot-6, 270-pound defensive end recorded five sacks.

Ray Drew  #47

6’5 276  DE Georgia

Here is the guy to keep your eye on, Drew played at a very high level in the SEC but for a variety of reasons never was able to set himself apart and distinguish himself as a top level draftee. When Drew joined Georgia he was projected as an outside linebacker but grew too much to stay at the position. Drew then began playing Defensive End where he showed flashes of what he could become. He actually looks like a similar player to Fede.

To explain the rest I’ll insert from CBS Sports:

“Drew was considered one of the crown jewels in Georgia’s highly touted “Dream Team” recruiting class in 2011, but prior to the 2013 season had been considered a bit of a bust.

Expected to play outside linebacker, Drew kept growing and finally earned time at defensive end in ’13, starting seven of 13 games and posting 43 tackles, eight tackles for loss and six sacks. Left on the defensive line as a senior, Drew quietly emerged as one of the SEC’s better and more versatile defenders in 2014 — though his statistics (39 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, one sack) hardly prove it.

Drew’s relatively pedestrian statistics can be explained by the block-eating role he was to play at Georgia. Keeping blockers off of Georgia’s playmaking linebackers forced Drew to get stronger but robbed him of the production that could earn him a higher draft selection. Savvy scouts will notice Drew’s size, upside and passionate play, as well as the three blocked kicks he recorded in 2014.

If drafted into a 4-3 alignment that allows him to attack, Drew could prove a better (or at least more productive) player in the NFL than he ever was at Georgia.”

A couple of things stand out from there for me: the first is “savvy scouts”, even though we’ve only seen one year of on field production from Hickey’s picks I think savvy is easily a word we could use to describe him thus far. Second thing is “drafted into a 4-3 alignment” well undrafted in this case but certainly this puts Drew in a position to showcase his talents and gives him the best chance to succeed.

Kendall Montgomery  #67

6’5  262 DE Bowling Green

Although Kendall is wearing what is normally an offensive lineman’s number (67), make no mistake, this kid is here to work and make an impression at the DE position.

From newerascouting.com:

Scott Porter: What do you like most about football?

Kendall Montgomery: I like the physicality and putting my hands on people and letting my aggression out on the field.

Scott Porter: What type of person is an NFL team getting in you?

Kendall Montgomery: They are getting an ambitious person. I want to be the best at what I do. They are getting a person who will work hard to be the best player he can be and display great character.

Scott Porter: What separates you from other players?

Kendall Montgomery: My athletic ability combined with my versatility. I could play DE, LB or TE. I can cover, rush and tackle.

Good answers!

There is also this for this fringe player as he tries to forge a career in the NFL.

From draftinsider.net:

Bio: Infrequent starter the past three seasons. Posted a career-best 21 tackles, 4 tackles for loss and 3 sacks as a junior.

Positive: Imposing line prospect who’s shown marginal development. Displays good movement skills, easily changes direction and gets a lot of pressure up the field.

Negative: Lacks great first step quickness. Ineffective using his hands to protect himself and slow disengaging from blocks.

Analysis: On paper Montgomery possesses the size and speed desired for a starting defensive end but his results fall far short. He’s a developmental prospect who must quickly pick up the pace of his game for any chance of a career at the next level.

The thing to note about all three of these players is the similar size. All of them are much bigger than what we had seen being brought in from Ireland. When you add Fede to the mix you have four players who are big at the DE spot all possess a good amount of quickness and possibly some of the same position flexibility we saw from Fede when he was playing.

I wish the best of luck to these fringe players as they attempt to become Miami Dolphins.

Folks, I apologized immediately after the photo posted and suggested it be moderated. The picture was much smaller on the site I linked it from and I couldn’t see the “detail” that was visible on the larger format picture that posted here. The picture did not appear to be “nude” before I saw it in the much larger format on here. I will refrain from posting pictures in the future.

Herd, My apology is sincere and not bullshit. I would never intentionally make anyone here uncomfortable. I hope you can forgive my mistake.

  3. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

There is a poll up on the “Phinsider” asking how many wins does Philbin need to need to get this year to save his job. The most popular answer with 43% is 10 games. The second most popular answer is “If they get in the playoff’s his record won’t matter” with 33%

What do you guys think? I think if we win 10 games it will be “obvious” improvement and will be enough for Ross to stay the course. Do you guys think Philbin could get the team to 10 or 11 wins and if we still don’t make the playoffs he will get canned?

JUST EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT, WORK, SON!!! – – Take a major bow!! It just amazes me that we have such an abundance of talent on the defensive line and so little on the O-Line.
    —————
ROCKPHIN asks us the minimum requirement for Philbin to keep his job. –MY minimum requirement has two parts. 1) Make the playoffs; and 2) WIN A PLAYOFF GAME. –Going 9-7 or 10-6 and making the playoffs only to be blown out in the first round IS NOT ACCEPTABLE!! –It has been 14 straight seasons without a single playoff win for the Dolphins, THE LONGEST SUCH STREAK IN FRANCHISE HISTORY!! – – I do NOT want, or NEED, another HC who can, at best, extend this streak. I WANT, AND EXPECT, A COACH WHO WINS PLAYOFF GAMES!! – – Have we gotten to the point that most of us are OK with mediocrity? –Have we forgotten the lessons of “ABSOLUTE PERFECTION” and “FOLLOWING PERFECTION?” – – “THE OBJECT OF THE GAME IS TO WIN THE GAME!!”
    ————–
HAD those brave guys who hit the beaches at Normandy accepted mediocrity, we’d all be goose stepping today!! We, as a society, must NEVER SETTLE for anything less than victory. THAT is our history. That is our goal. NOTHING LESS WILL SUFFICE!!

Whatever the number is for Philbin rest assured that another December collapse will have him gone.If we had played well the last two Decembers each year would have been a playoff year. Last chance and I feel good about Suh mitigating his chances.

OD, we all want a team that wins in the playoffs, but to say throw the coach out, even if we make the playoffs and lose the first game is ridiculous. Logically it makes no sense, unless there’s another Don Shula waiting in the wings. Change for the sake of change.

Whatever. You’ll not convince me he didn’t or shouldn’t have known. I’m sure it came from a website where that would be expected. He was posting it for FFR, so there’s that to confirm it. But go on, defend him. I must have it all wrong. You guys can look at it all day, have a porno on a loop on your DVD player, have the walls in your home wallpapered with it. Ok by me. I’m not a prude, but it should go without saying that was wrong.

Rather than re type it, here’s what I had to say to my fellow admins on the site about it.
I wouldn’t say upset…I am pissed off. I can’t read the blog most days at work because it’s blocked because of the pics that’s on it. I work at a government funded non-profit and internet usage is monitored. You should see the looks I get from the guys in IT. And I can’t read at home because I’m a mom and my kids are around me all the time and I don’t want them wondering why mom is on a website with tits and ass and crotch shots on it. If I do read at home I have to go in a room by myself. Shouldn’t have to be that way IMO.

I think he just adjusted and was able to balance better. I know he doesn’t kill himself, he probably does enough to get by. First semester I’d say he was overwhelmed with freedom, and just got behind the 8-ball by not taking it seriously enough from the start, and then it was too late. I think he finally realized what he can do and can’t do now.

You are talking to the expert at getting by. Greatest resource I ever found was this course catalogue in the suite of some the biggest partiers on my rugby team. It was an in-depth analysis based on personal experience of them and others that had stopped bye to visit the three foot bong of any course they have taken in terms of how much work was required and how easy (or hard) the teacher graded.

We have 4 WRs better than Hartline. 3 RBs waaaaayyy better than Daniel Thomas. Better backup OL and DL than we had starters at OG last yr.

BPA will mean starters for us become back-ups or get released to inferior teams.

Prediction from The Pats Pulpit — Miami Dolphins: 8-8 [3rd AFC East after the Bills], Miss the Playoffs. But then again despite the Brady suspension he claims. “In the off-season, the gap between the Patriots and their AFC rivals has not closed and arguably has widened” and gets his Pats at 14-2.
    —————————————————-

Miami is putting all their chips on the table this off-season with the signing of DT Ndamukong Suh and giving QB Ryan Tannehill a lucrative contract extension. Like the Bills, the Dolphins have a lot of talent on the defensive line that should give Patriots fans concerns. Unlike the Bills, they do have a QB and good pieces on offense to work with. QB Ryan Tannehill made a big step forward last year under the Bill Lazor offense, which really suits him well. While the Dolphins would be an easy pick for a playoff team with all the names they are rocking, their roster is very top-heavy. You can’t predict injuries, specifically who and the severity, but the Dolphins lack depth at enough positions (OL and LB) that could doom their season quickly. Another 8-8 season likely gets Joe Philbin fired for a mediocre performance with a talented roster.

  86. Randy's avatar Randy says:

21 tds when the games mattered and the other teams were actually playing to win. Not good enough…not even close. Either we find a way to get more production out of our running game or Tannehill and the passing game needs to improve a lot. I’d prefer we have a more balanced offense, but that doesn’t appear to be lazor’s thing so far. Stop abandoning the run in the first half and help out your QB by sticking to the run and keeping defenses honest. This will also help a struggling OL. I’d be fine with tannehill throwing 25 tds if we can get another 15-20 from our running game.

Our offense has been too predictable and one-dimensional. It makes it very easy for defenses to play us.

    son,
Yes, and our OL needs to take that next step to being the sort of unit that can run when they need to. I think our running game was Ok last year. We simply gave up on it too often. I get that Lazor is trying to run a short passing game/ball control offense, but you still gotta run the ball. I hope we’re around 500 pass attempts this year…not 600. Maybe we can finally stop throwing the ball on 3rd and 2 for pete’s sake. Hopefully our OL will get it done this year.

To the people that are saying that the Patriots are going to lose the Division, one thing you have to remember is that there’s only one quarter back in the division and that’s Tom Brady.

Yes the Patriots are going to have to overcome a lot but even with those big defenses from the Jets and the Bills they just don’t stand a chance, without even an average quarterback on the roster.

At this point I’m hoping Matt Simms who’s just been signed by the Bills after letting go of Jeff Tuel, wins the start, which is unlikely.

Ryan Tannehill is still an average quarterback on the verge of something? I’m not sure what it is but he’s on the verge of something. So even with the Patriots defense being weakend, the AFC East minor leaguers still stand very little chance of winning the division.

It’s as I’ve always said, the Ravens are the Patriots only competition in the AFC, so get used to it. It will be that way for at least the next three to five years, unless Jimmy Garoppolo takes off 3 years from now, showing what it takes to play at a high level during the preseason, and the first 2 or 4 games during the regular season. So I’d say the basement is where the rest of the AFC and AFC East is going to stay if it’s not the Ravens.
