Dolphins Camp
Day one of training camp is in the books. Dallas Thomas has already been replaced, lol, and Michael Preston is our start WR. Forget DeVante Parker, Greg Jennings, Kenny Stills or the “Juice”, Preston caught two long bombs on the first day of camp and has been elevated to hero. This will be day two of practice today meaning there won’t be any hitting again. All we really want to see is the hitting. Dallas Thomas won’t lose anything until the pads come on nor will any one else. It’s one thing to know your assignments and be technically sound but as a lineman you have to move bodies so we will soon see who does.

It sounds like by all accounts that the energy is high, the attitude of the team is excellent and that even talk of having lofty expectations isn’t causing anyone to run away screaming. Word came out yesterday from Coach Philbin that NDominant Suh himself was taking 2nd round pick Jordan Phillips under his wing and that Suh had him working out with him. No problem there, thanks big man.
Suh is here, everything is different now!

No you di’ent

#strongertogether
All in all day one was taken as a positive, onward and upward for these Dolphins!

Happy Camping Dolphans

Multiple reports say Mets have Cespedes. There’s the big bat we need.
Until we find out it fell through because he’s had a cold lately.
Lol!
It’s done
…and Cespedes has a canon of an arm… always ranks in top 3 or 4 in runs saved by throwing people out FROM the outfield.
Fuller and Cecchini to Detroit for Cespedes
One step ahead!
Don’t know much about them?
The big question is, what did we have to give up for a three month rental?
Look up
Haha! I didn’t want to give up Cecchini, but oh well.
We still have Matt Reynolds
3:00 Trade deadline is now past. Time to get some garage cleaning done. Hope you Mets fans enjoy Cespy. On quieter news… last place A’s acquire triple A pitcher from Jays for $$ (wah wah waaahhhh). We will finish the season with mostly AAA promotions ugh
Enjoy! I did mine last week!
They did it. Now I want to listen to all the fans who the last couple of days were bashing the team guaranteeing we wouldn’t do anything. Patience! 🙂
I wanted Cespedes over Gomez anway.
Me too. I just didn’t think we’d pull the trigger on Cespedes. Hopefully he prospers in NY and signs a long deal here.
Go Jamil Douglas!!!
For three months, Dolphins have hoped they will be a good team this year. But beginning Saturday, they’ll learn how good they truly are, particularly in the trenches.
That starts at left guard, which is easily the biggest question mark on a team with surprisingly few.
“It will be a good time,” said rookie Jamil Douglas. “There will be a lot of popping out here.”
At this point, the competition between Douglas and Dallas Thomas for the job is technically wide open.
But Douglas, the fourth-round pick out of Arizona State, seems to have an early edge, however slight. People within the organization see Douglas as the favorite to ultimately earn the starting spot, but it’s far from a done deal.
Dolphins coaches have seen Thomas in pads (with uninspiring results). But Douglas is still an enigma. He’s held his own thus far in training camp, splitting reps with Thomas, and certainly has the strength for the job.
Douglas is a weight-room warrior. His measurables are something out of Muscle & Fitness.
“I believe I did 565 [pounds] for three [reps] on squat,” Douglas said. “My power clean was 385. And my bench was 415 for two, I believe.”
Put another way: Douglas could bench press Jarvis Landry with his right hand and Reshad Jones with his left.
But how does that strength translate? We’ll find out Saturday, when Dolphins want to see him move defensive players backwards.
Football is about much more than how a player looks in the mirror, of course. Plenty of Combine freaks have bombed once the lights come on.
Which is why Joe Philbin was so pleased Thursday night when he knocked on Douglas’ hotel room door during his nightly bed check.
“He was watching the one-on-ones of himself,” Philbin said. “He’s into it. He’s aware of some of the things he needs to work on, as any young player. He has got good awareness for a young player both on the field and some of the things professionally he needs to do to help improve. I really like what he’s doing.”
Douglas isn’t afraid to keep his nose in a book. He earned his undergraduate degree in criminal justice in the fall of 2013; he’s now just two classes short of his master’s.
After practice Friday, when most of his teammates had already retired to the locker room, he was still on the field. Although he’s never played center in his life, Douglas was learning how to snap the football, in the off-chance he’s ever asked to do so in a game.
The Dolphins’ plan, however, is for him to never touch the ball. It’s for him to line up between Mike Pouncey and a healthy Branden Albert and protect Ryan Tannehill.
While they could turn to free agent Evan Mathis in a pinch — Mathis’ agent, Drew Rosenhaus, was seen chatting up football czar Mike Tannenbaum on Friday afternoon — the Dolphins are going to give Douglas and Thomas every chance to win the job.
“Definitely, I want to be the guy,” Douglas said. “But at the same time, that’s not something I can focus on. That’s out of my control. If they choose to [sign Mathis], they choose to. I’m not going to worry about that. I’m just going to come here every day and do what they brought me into to do.”
The alarm is set for 8 a.m. Saturday. Time to take off those pajamas.

Gotta like his attitude and work ethic. He’s taking this seriously. Hopefully we hit on a gem in the 4th round.
We have Conforto too.
Tim,
Cecchini was a top prospect in the organization (SS). Maybe they’re going to try to develop Rosario down in the minors.
Cespedes seemed to the guy that fit the bill the most. NY is a good place for him to be and we have pitching which is how you win.
I loved the part about how Philbin found him doing film study on himself during bed check.
Go Win LG for us #75 big boy!!!
Mike,
Good point on Reynolds, we have Rosario too.
Bri/Tim
Now I’m hearing Fuller and Cessa. Don’t know who either of them are
Luis Cessa RHP
I think Fuller is a reliever. I think he’s been steadily progressing if I’m not mistaken.
🙂
Thanks Rhino!
Yawn
That’s because your Braves are wankers. LOL

GD,
Could you not interrupt the Mets talk please?
LMAO!!!! Especially with that long drawn out article that I did read anyway. LOL
Mets or gay pride? lol
Ok ok, I’m a Braves wanker. But they are horribly rebuilding. Bat about as bad as the Mutts. 😉
Can’t stand the Mets naturally as a Marlins fan but I always root for my Cubans where ever they play. Go Cespedes!
Armando Salguero @ArmandoSalguero
Philbin on K Andrew Franks: “Ball comes off his foot. Again, not perfect every time, but there’s something to work with there, for sure.”
____________________
Well thank God the ball is coming off his foot and not his elbow like Garo. 😉
Oh okay, I heard he shot them out of his ass like a potato gun.
LOL! Yea i think the good thing I read today is that he was kicking 50 yarders into the wind with ease (mando might have said this on twitter?)
Yep, he was reportedly kicking far into the wind…ala Chris Perkins, now Dohmar.
LOL @ what Philbin found him doing.
How do we know he wasn’t watching porn but switched screens after he heard the door knock?
LOL.
I just heard on NFL live that the bills QBs were all pretty bad today, their first day of camp. LOL.
That’s because they are all bad. LOL
GD,
I’m REALLY pulling for Douglas to win that LG job as well. It would satify a major need, and help us with the salary cap next year as well if we don’t have to sign Mathis.
Also it would be nice to hit on a mid rounder on the OL for once.
Absolutely.
Do you think Cuddyer platoons with Duda righty/lefty or unless one is hot, and they both come off the bench as a bat?
So what’s the lineup now?
Ask Rockphin.
Brian, yes I’m pulling for the ‘Zona Mauler.
I’m glad he is strong like Suh, cause @ a listed 304 he could be viewed as a tad light for a OG by some. But if he can match strength, and maintain quick feet like he did as LT in college than he’ll be a good pulling OG for our ZBS in due time.
Jamil; Schamil! We got Cespedes! lol
Tim
I think Cuddyer is going to see much less playing time.
Probably and at least we have some major league hitters now in the starting lineup and off the bench.
The moment we drafted Douglas I was hoping he would be the starter.
We hoped the same with Dallas Thomas & Turner too.
But something about Douglas says ‘I got this’.
I still have high hopes for Turner. He hasn’t really played yet. Thomas also has limited playing experience and has been shuffled around. But Douglas seemed like a prefect scheme fit.
Same. There was always something different about him relative to Turner/Thomas. Turner played with power in a crap conference and Thomas never really showed much in the way of using his arms and the promise was with his relative quick feet / acceleration for OL. Jamil plays with a mean streak and uses his arms well.
Speaking of Andrew Franks, I can already start to imagine the puns if he wins the job.
“Franks right down the middle!”
He went to college 20 minutes from where I live. Have to admit I’m pulling for the kid!
His frank?
LOL Tim. Well played 🙂
Lol! As long as he hits those FG’s we can take turns.
MIke/Tim ,
I read that the Mets fear Cuddyear won’t play again this season.
Oh really. Then that makes that easier. We need d’Arnaud back and healthy and we might actually have a pretty good lineup and some bench depth.
Mike,
It’s Fulmer and Cessa- you suck at this!
It’s like watching headless children try on hats. LOL
So we’re trading pitchers who won’t be here anytime soon.
Yeah, Fulmer is a big time prospect, but I guess they really wanted Cespedes. Hopefully they can resign him for a few years.
Brian,
Prospects are just that but the key here is where the Mets feel where they are at competitively. I’m not sure if they are built for a realistic WS run but if they are; then it will be worth it.
The Marlins traded 1b Adrian Gonzalez to the Rangers for reliever/closer Ugueth Urbina during their last WS (2004) run because their closer situation was shaky heading into the final months of the season.
That bet paid off as the Marlins won the WS.
Forget that Gonzalez had success in the majors (now with the Dodgers) because 1 WS win is worth more than 1 player’s career prospects sometimes.
If they can start hitting consistently Al, then they could make a serious run. No one is going to want to face that pitching staff come October.
Tim,
D’Arnaud was just taken off the DL.
I heard he could play this weekend.
He could play, but only without his head
“The Dolphins’ plan, however, is for him to never touch the ball. It’s for him to line up between Mike Pouncey and a healthy Branden Albert and protect Ryan Tannehill.”
—-
“THEY SAID THEY DON’T WANT ME TO TOUCH YOU…..”
Al, Turner was a LT in college and the book on him was always he’ll need time to adjust at the next level and probably at guard so he might take some time. Well time to compete.
You might be right on Thomas. He moves well but doesn’t play like his size would suggest. Would love to see him turn that around.
Hey, not everyone plays out to be a starter in this league. At this point, Thomas still has time on his side and for what it’s worth, he still did pretty good facing the majority of NFL players (sucked at times against the elite guys). The talent is there but the technique off the snap is not there yet. He looks bad when he leans and tips off his direction or whenever he decides to overstep on his backstep which makes him lose big time leverage when 1st contact arrives. I won’t be disappointed if Thomas can be the jack of all trades backup who plays OG-OT which to me he already has proven he can be.
Brian,
To me you need 3 things to win a WS.
Strong lead off hitter, strong 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation and of course the dominant closer. Mets have the starters, lack the dominant closer/lead off hitter BUT they have an adequate closer situation for now.
Clippard May take over that role befor too long if Familia keeps shitting the bed. Their 1-2 is more a a soft jab at this point, but hopefully they can get it going with the new pieces in place.
Granderson isn’t an ideal lead-off hitter but he has carried this team when nobody else was hitting. He’s also done lead-off type things like stretching singles into doubles late in the game.
All this team needs is to start scoring 2 more runs more often and they’ll win a lot more games.
Agreed. The amount of times we have wasted brilliant pitching performances this season is maddenening.
So maddening, I added an extra en.
@Dbolt48: On honor of the police standoff near me my favorite negotiating scene in film history https://t.co/rPd996WJ8K
Lol! Did you guys have “Mister Softee” growing up (insert joke)?
LOL. Yes and it’s still here😆
Al, the Mets have lost so many games with their starting pitching shutting teams out only to have the bullpen blow 1-0 or 2-0 leads. If they can start scoring more 4-5 runs per game they might run off a bunch of wins and they could be really dangerous in the playoffs.
Watch his seal blocks and great movement pulling across the line. He should become a stud under Benton and between Albert & Pouncey!
The best part of the video is he will go away from his primary target to nail the free rusher that beats the OT.
Yep, good awareness, doesn’t suffer from tunnel vision.
He has really quick feet for a guy his size. I love how he is constantly moving downfield looking for someone to hit.
GDP,
One thing that I always like to see from an OL is those hands pushing up on those shoulders with a little bit of holding (holding the interior part of the jersey goes uncalled often for whatever reason). He has that and usually can get nasty with his opponent.
Nice mean streak, plays past the whistle, and seems to be a leader too.
Tim/Brian,
That (strong pitching; crap run support) is no stranger to Marlins/Braves fans lol.
Braves at one point had issues generating runs with their young arms and soft bats.
Marlins had that at one point (crap run support and strong pitching).
It happens when you over invest in one position while negating others.
So it is where the Mets are at this point but their investments at starting pitching has been spectacular (knocked it out of the park so to speak) but at the expense of hitting prospects.
Usually you will see GM be good at one thing or another and just fill the void they have in certain areas with trades or FA signings. When Dombrowski was with the Marlins he wasn’t particularly good at finding bats though coincidentally enough signing Miguel Cabrera at age 16 back in 1999 was the lucky exception. Dombrowski was always good at finding power arms.
Alright, gotta run, have a great weekend.
GO DOLPHINS!
You to Al!
Take care Al, thanks for the convo!
Good Attitude, seems Suh is rubbing off on him!

Jordan Phillips for those watching at home. 😉
Mets fans:
Congrats on Cespedes he is a hell of a talent but a word of warning is that he has been a cancer in every locker room he has been in. If he gets his head on straight you got a hell of a talent.
Thanks Ken. That’s the first I’ve heard of him being a cancer in the locker room. I’ve read that he’s well liked by teammates. A word of warning to you: be careful of talking about the Mets on here, you may get yelled at.
I have heard that from a number of Red Sox fans one of whom has lots of inside source said. They all say he was a major asshole
Good stuff on Jamil Douglas I am pulling for him as a starter. I don’t want to see Dallas Thomas as a starter
I want to see the best player as the starter. If that means Thomas develops (OMG what is that?) and wins the job then fantastic. We have a reliable backup also developing in Douglas. Depth would be great. Thomas sucked as a TACKLE last year but did not give up 1 sack as a guard. It is my sincere hope that Thomas wins the position and does well this year. And that a bunch of other guys also DEVELOP this off season…..
I have seen enough to lead me to believe that he can be a quality starter but I do think he can be a good bench player because of his flexibility. I just don’t want to rely on him for 16 games

Nobody would be happier if he pans out. My ego can handle being wrong. Also fwiw I am rooting for Jamil Douglas whom I like a real lot
Drive by over for now. Peace
We’re relying on a lot of 4th, 3rd, 2nd and rookie players. It’s time for guys to step up, especially the guys with some experience. There is talent, but everyone in the league has talent. We need multiple players raising the level of their play.
As for the OL concerns, let’s look at last year’s OL pretty much midseason to the end before more injuries screwed things up.
2014
LT James
LG Colledge
C Satele
RG Pouncey
RT Thomas
2015 (projected)
LT Albert
LG Thomas/Douglas
C Pouncey
RG Turner
RT James
It’s going to be quite different so I can’t look at last year’s OL the same as this year’s OL. It doesn’t mean it’s going to automatically be so much better, but it gives us hope.
My sincerest hope is that Thomas excels this year at LG and we get some quality YOUNG CHEAP depth with our other draft picks. That is what getting a good OL coach is all about. Coaching them up. Does anyone remember that before last season when Dallas used their #1 on a guard that their O line was seen as a liability and discussed in the preseason. And then BOOM they added one guy and they have the top line in the NFC? Some guys got better..
Douglas all the way for me. He’s so strong he can push any DLineman. When looking at video of Juwuan last yr several of the plays had Dallas Thomas in them playing LG and he looked like a JAG. All these guys look good on their highlight reels, but what do they look like the rest of the time?

“Every time I’ve gotten the opportunity, I’ve capitalized on it.”
Don’t let me forget!
The judge told the league they need to work it out with Brady’s lawyers, so what I see happening is it gets cut in half (2 games), or if Brady is stuck on his reputation and wants to keep the 4 games and have them say the suspension was, because he didn’t turn over his phone.
Either way Brady wins, and it makes no sense.
Judges always tell you have to work it out with the other side. They hate to make decisions but if you can’t work it out then they have to decide.
Wilmer Flores goes from almost being traded and upset about it, the Mets are a laughing stock until adding Cespedes and Flores hitting a walk off homer against the Nats to make it 2.0 games back. LOL
You can’t make this stuff up. I feel so good for Flores. Karma works in mysterious ways. 🙂
enjoy the ride its fun when you go through a magical season. You get excited about every pitch, pitch count, every player batting, every inning and every out and that last out with the celebration of being World Champs. You will remember it for many years like it was yesterday and you will get chills up your back of your spine. I hope you get to experience winning the ultimate prize of a great baseball season.
Unless your an A’s fan… then you have watch the team get systematically dismantled to maintain the prestige of being one of the lowest paid teams. 😦
I enjoy watching the players traded who were disappointing before traded and then how they do. Sort of like the Billy Ball GM with his statistical genius intern. The Mets players who were not traded can’t hit the ball the whole season so far and statistically they should pull out of this funk before the season is over to get back to the players career average. If this happens it could be a replay of the 69 Mets season.

Lol! Yes!!!! I was watching most of that game last night, and praying we wouldn’t blow another gem by Harvey. How can you not feel good for that kid? Huge win for us. Now we have to roll and take the series so we can pick up a game.

Unless of course you’re one of the grumpies, like Son or Rock. lol

Clippard looked shaky last night. They showed a quick shot of the Nationals dugout when he was on the mound, and one guy was cursing profusely, probably saying something like “We’re beatable, huh? “Go drill a line drive right at him!”

We’ve talked about it quite extensively, and it’s why we can’t afford Mathis this yr (we need the $10 mil carry over). We’ll be fine next yr, but we won’t be signing any FAs from other rosters.
Steve
That would NOT be a pretty site!
Nor was it in the ’80s, but they still chose to dress that way.
Yes, but a hot babe in leotards is one thing, and me in a leotard is completely another. lol
Ok, let’s forget I brought it up.
Done!
As long as Jordan Phillips gets limited PT this yr he’ll be valuable, but if he has to play extensively it may not be pretty. Good thing we have quality depth at DT.
He shouldn’t have to unless we have an injury
Yeah I know, but I didn’t want to write the negative mojo.
We should know right away, once the preseason games start, what the run D will look like. It may get real fun when the 2nd and 3rd teamers are on the field. Anthony Johnson and CJ Moseley going against 3rd team olines isn’t fair.
Gotcha
Wow, just caught that. RIP Roddy!
I used to love “Pipers Pit” which was Roddy interviewing a Wrestler, and then usually throwing down at some point and kicking the interviewee’s ass.
What iis with the coaches calling for 11 on 7 today instead of the usual 7 on 7 and 11 on 11?
What!? You mean the O-line is practicing today? RUT ROH RAGGY
It seems like the online is sucking again this practice. SMH. can we have a decent o-line play for once?
^oline
It’s typical at this point in camp, but that Dline is very good, even the 3rd teamers.
Ha ha ha ha ha I’m pretty sure any offensive lineman in the league will have problems with Suh & Wake blowing shit up. OV is going to have a big year. Our O-line will get better practicing against these guys too. I completely expected the offensive line to struggle today
I hope they get better. We really need this online to excel if we wanna make it to playoffs
RIP Roddy!
Suh has had Billy Turner on roller skates all morning.
I think Steve has a very good point some of the guys that we cut this year will be starting on other teams this year. We are very deep at Dline.
Steve, I think once Albert gets back the online will be better. I’m just tired of reading online is getting man handled by the d-line every training camp. It’s depressing to read walkers tweets about the online play. I guess Turner had a really rough day today. Albeit he’s going against Suh
Nice!
I’m going to worry about the O-line until they prove I don’t have to.
And then after that too knowing you. lol
BUSTED! lol
I am digging this competition with D-line dominating the O-line the FIRST day. I have been hearing that for the first time in like forever that the offense has been ahead of the defense. Now when the pads came on it flipped the other way. I would love to see young guys on the offensive line take it personally and come back tomorrow with a passion
I am recalling let year in camp James was struggling against Wake and Wake took the time after the series was over to give James pointers and worked on things. Explaining to James how he was beaten. James got better as pre season progressed. I hope Turner iis learning from Suh the same way.
Our DL is one the strengths of our team. There have also been reports of our OL opening some nice holes for the backs. It’s practice and competition. That’s how it goes. You don’t want it being one way all the time. But our DL is better than our OL. That’s okay. They’re going to get great work in TC to get ready for the season.
God damn it how do I shut auto incorrect off on this phone!!?
For the Mets fans. You think Conforto gets sent back down with the trade for Cespedes?
Yes I do. Kid needs to play regularly.
Between Granderson, Lagares, Cespedes and then the return of Cuddyer, plus add in Niuwenhuis, he won’t get that here now
Agreed. At least he got a taste of the big league so now he knows what it’s like.
Just trade him to the A’s. We are fielding a Triple A team the rest of the year anyway. 2 hits in last 17 innings despite starters giving up only 1 run in that same time.
Splintered board!!!
So, when or who is going to start the “Roster Prediction Spreadsheet”? Probably should get the predictions in before camp gets underway too much. It’s much more challenging when there are 90 guys (well 65 really) lol
Any of you people out there have kids who are gonna be seniors in high school: Common App has posted today. It’s best to start the application process and get rough drafts done before school starts. 🙂
Ugh! Too early, but I appreciate the announcement regardless.
Tim
If Conforto had speed, he might have had a chance at staying because he bat leadoff, but he doesn’t. so back to AAA for a while. I agree, he got a taste, and he now knows he’s major league ready.
Just curious… do you all go to a Mets blog ever? I disappear quite a bit around here during the summer because I spend a couple hours in the a.m. on Athletics Nation. Used to do the MLB site but they get cluttered with ‘rivalry posters’ and nothing gets discussed/learned.
Nope, I don’t, I just turn this blog into a Mets blog. 😀

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/patriots-release-damning-emails-from-nfl-on-leaks-of-false-deflate-gate-data-232214697.html
This case has the telecommunications world attention. Pats turned over emails without a court order that they could have required from the league. Goodall was the judge and jury-very unusual. Anyone think Goodall and bellicheck have a long standing grudge dating back before spygate.
maybe bellicheck is being punished for his embarrassing the nfl when he went to the podium and said he decided to coach the pats instead of the jets.
Polian has been arguing that the way this was handled is actually written into the last CB agreement… and that this is an ‘industry’ rule that both sides agreed to (the whole ‘integrity’ thing) and that the court will simply be looking at this incident in the context of the CB agreement.
it should be interesting how the NFL proves their point. Goodall judge and jury doesn’t seem right either. The trainers who did the actual deflatingoffered text messages from their phones and Brady offered to provide to provide meta data along with all the paper bills received from carrier. I found out some interesting info. last night. A cousin of mine was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in 1969. He was a center out of Boston College. He broke his back and that was the end of his career.
My biological father was out of my life at a young age so I didn’t know much of his family. But I’ve reconnected with some of them over the years through some relatives I do know. Pretty cool!”
No, I didn’t, but that’s freaking cool!
