FOLLOWING PERFECTION: THE 1973 MIAMI DOLPHINS

By: Randy Campbell (OLD DOLFAN)

 dolphins 73Game 9; Baltimore @ Miami, Nov. 11, 1973

Sometimes fans go to football games and witness something totally out of the ordinary. Something truly outstanding. Something they’ve never heard of or seen before. Something that is record breaking.

Such a thing ACTUALLY HAPPENED when the Colts traveled to Miami to play the first place Dolphins in the historic Orange Bowl on Nov. 11, 1973. It involved NOT a Hall of Famer NOR one of the leading stars.  Instead, it involved low profile Dolphins’ defensive back Tim Foley who, like Bob Griese, was an alum of Purdue University. On this day, Foley would achieve something that had never been achieved before in the long history of the National Football League.

Head coach Don Shula had dealt with one of his unpleasant memories the previous Sunday when Miami came from behind to defeat the Jets 24-14 in Shea Stadium. The pain of Shula’s loss to Namath and the Jets in Super Bowl III was far from gone. But four consecutive wins over New York certainly salved Shula’s wounds.

And speaking of losing to the Jets, Don Shula had been head coach of the Colts that fateful day in the historic Orange Bowl. Shula hoped Super Bowl III would be the crowning achievement in his spectacularly successful stint as head coach of the Baltimore franchise. Over seven seasons, Shula compiled a gaudy 71-23-4 record. In the 1967 and 1968 seasons Shula had a 26-3-2 record, THE SECOND BEST TWO-YEAR RUN IN NFL HISTORY, exceeded only by his 32-2 TWO-YEAR RUN WITH THE 1972 AND 1973 MIAMI DOLPHINS! Shula’s overall record during his first 10 years as an NFL head coach 113-30-4, a mind-boggling 83 games over .500!! –Needless to say, THAT record has never been broken!!

Colts’ owner Carroll Rosenbloom could only remember Shula’s big Super Bowl defeat. An ungrateful Rosenbloom said “Shula always chokes in the big games.” After Miami owner Joe Robbie stole Shula away from Baltimore, Rosenbloom didn’t want Shula back. Instead, he demanded, and GOT, via a ruling from commissioner Pete Rozelle, Miami’s top draft choice. Later, Rosenbloom traded ownership of the Colts in exchange for becoming owner of the Los Angeles Rams. Rosenbloom was in Los Angeles the day Shula’s Dolphins won Super Bowl VII at the L. A. Coliseum and completed the NFL’s one and only Perfect Season. Said Shula, “I’m particularly pleased we won this championship in the very city where a certain man (Rosenbloom) now resides.”

Don Shula enjoyed great success against every one of his AFC East opponents in the decade of the ’70’s, including his former team, the Baltimore Colts. After losing to the Colts in 1970, Shula’s Dolphins won eight of their next 10 meetings. On January 2, 1972, Miami shutout Baltimore 21-0 in the AFC Championship Game. Then, during the 1972 Perfect Season, Shula’s Dolphins shut out the Colts twice more by scores of 23-0 and 16-0. The Don of Miami relished the thought of blanking the Colts for a fourth consecutive time!

Miami’s offensive coordinator during those three consecutive shutout victories was Howard Schnellenberger. Today, however, “Schnelly” was on the other side of the field. He had been hired by Baltimore as their new head coach not long after the Dolphins won Super Bowl VII. Schnellenberger’s rebuilding process in Baltimore was hampered by a lack of young talent. Both he and his former boss (Shula) knew that the 2-6 Colts would have to play their best game of the year just to keep this game close.

Dolphins 70 Home Paul Warfield, Colts

The temperature was a mild 74 degrees at the 1:00 PM kickoff. But swirling 15-20 MPH winds coming in from Biscayne Bay would play havoc with both teams’ passing games. This played right into Miami’s advantage. The Dolphins had the best offensive line and the best running game in the NFL.

Morris 1st tdOn Miami’s second possession Mercury Morris used his quick feet to bouce outside left tackle, then back across the center of the field, on his way to a 48 yard touchdown romp! The “No Name Defense” stopped the Colts on their next series, forcing a David Lee punt. Cornerback Tim Foley, a special teams ace, broke through the line and BLOCKED LEE’S KICK! He snared the ball at the eight yard line and scooted into the end zone, giving the Fins an early 14-0 lead!

Miami continued to run the ball with success. The next long drive got the ball all the way to the Baltimore six yard line. Yepremian’s chip shot field goal expanded the lead to 17-0 at the end of the first quarter. The rout was on!

Neither of Baltimore’s quarterbacks, Marty Domres or Bert Jones, were effective against Miami’s suffocating defense. They would combine for just seven completions in 22 attempts for 59 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions. Miami would sack these two QB’s five times for 39 yards in losses. Thus, Baltimore ended with just 20 yards net passing FOR THE ENTIRE GAME!!

The second quarter featured a 53 yard touchdown run by Mercury Morris plus a 14 yard Yepremian field goal. It was 27-0, Miami, at the half.

Miami’s “No Names” stuffed the Colts again early in the third quarter. AGAIN, David Lee’s punt was blocked, this time by Bob Matheson! Tim Foley scooped-up the ball at the five and sprinted into the end zone with his second TD of the game! It marked the FIRST TIME IN NFL HISTORY that anyone had returned TWO BLOCKED PUNTS FOR TOUCHDOWNS in a single game! Foley was in the record books! And the Dolphins had a 34-0 lead.

anderson 3q int
Later, Garo would connect on a 38 yard 3-pointer and reserve running back Charlie Leigh would scamper 34 yards for another Dolphins’ TD, making the final score 44-0 in favor of Miami. Don Shula HAD his fourth consecutive shutout of the Colts, outscoring them 104-0 over that span!

Game statistics told an equally lopsided tale. Miami had 17 first downs to four for Baltimore. Miami had a club record 315 yards rushing plus 97 yards passing by Griese and Morrall. The Colts had a paltry 132 yards rushing and passing combined, much of it in the fourth quarter against Miami’s back-up defenders.

On the day, Mercury Morris rushed 12 times for 144 yards and two touchdowns. His average through nine games was 7.3 YARDS PER CARRY!! And the “No Name Defense” was now playing at their absolute best just as this team prepared to travel to Buffalo for a key AFC East showdown against OJ Simpson and the Bills!

Speaking of Buffalo, the news out of Rich Stadium was outstanding. The Bengals had just defeated the Bills 16-13, dropping Buffalo to 5-4. A Miami victory next Sunday would CLINCH THE AFC EAST TITLE FOR MIAMI!

The 1973 Miami Dolphins were now 8-1.

I don’t disagree with what you’re saying. YEs some of the sacks he last couple of years is on tanny but not all. The oline really hasn’t been good in pass pro the last couple of years. Last year they started ok but when albert went down it went downhill.

Might as well try beating the Texans there because we can’t anywhere else. LOL

      • oulder posted that there hasn’t been a decent OL since Marino.
The last truly effective OL I can remember was in 2002 and consisted of:
        LT 63 Mark Dixon
        LG 66 Jamie Nails
        C 61 Tim Ruddy
        RG 75 Todd Perry
        RT 71 Todd Wade
We were playing really well until Jamie Nails went down, Seth McKinney took his spot and then we bombed.

We got to be more dominant in the run…teams knew we were a very pass heavy team, so they pinned their ears back and kept bringing it….we’ve got to beat the rush & blitzes back.

Coach Joe Philbin confirmed Jarvis Landry’s “home base is still inside” at slot receiver.
There’s been talk Landry may play outside more in year two. That may be the case, but Landry’s going to be in the slot the vast majority of the time. Inside, he’ll be able to gobble up targets between the hashes and have 100-catch upside. By most accounts, Landry has also looked faster this summer.

  8. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Kenny Stills has missed the Dolphins’ last three training camp practices with a calf injury.
He’s been held off to the side riding a stationary bike. We haven’t heard much on Stills since he was acquired from the Saints in March, as he’s flown under the radar following the first-round selection of DeVante Parker and continued emergence of Jarvis Landry. But Stills figures to play the old Mike Wallace role in Miami on the outside. Ryan Tannehill’s deep ball has reportedly looked much better this summer.

    wed 8/4 from MH:

Dallas Thomas, vying for the starting left guard job, did not practice today due to a shoulder injury. Jamil Douglas, also competing for the starting job, took the vast majority of first-team snaps at left guard but not all of them, according to coach Joe Philbin.

Meanwhile, the level at which Ndamukong Suh plays defensive tackle (over the right guard) shows him to be a more obvious mismatch versus first-team right guard Billy Turner with each passing day. Suh today blew up a couple of running plays to the point he was in the backfield as Ryan Tannehill was handing the ball off.

Suh also dominated on pass plays.

And neither side is really going full bore quite yet.

“We haven’t done anything totally live yet,” defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle said. “But we’re on point with what we’re trying to do.”

On the other side of the football the explanations for why so many plays get blown up are interesting.

Said Joe Philbin of the competition: “No one’s earned anything yet.”

    Me: “We know.”

“I feel safe,” quarterback Ryan Tannehill said. “Everyone is competing. I’m not sure who is going to be in that [guard] spot but guys are competing and guys are facing one of the best, if not the best D-tackles in the league. It’s not always going to be pretty no matter who is up there. I don’t expect those guys to lock Suh down every single play.”

That is fair. Will he expect them to lock down Kyle Williams? Muhammad Wilkerson? Jabaal Sheard? Sheldon Richardson, assuming he ever gets back on the field?

The point is the three other AFC East teams also have good talent on their defensive front. Oh, and Buffalo coach Rex Ryan and New York coach Todd Bowles are known for bringing a blitz or 15 every game. Also, New England’s Bill Belichick is a solid defensive coach.

So it does not promise to get way easier for the Miami line.

  24. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Flaw in Mando’s logic is that Miami’s OL has gotten worse YR/YR. It hasn’t; the Fins DL has gotten much better though YR/YR. As for Buffalo, NYJ, & NE. Their DL has not gotten better YR/YR; their talent level is maxed out except for NE which has lost the talent of Wilfork that won’t easily be replaced.

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

This current OL group with the exception of Douglas, has faced Buffalo/NE/NYJ in real games.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The media makes it seem like we were never able to get a play off last year.

I’ll be the first to say the OL had some major problems last year but a lot of it to me was system change, a lack of chemistry due to new personnel along with too many injuries. It wasn’t just a talent issue though there was some of that too.

  25. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    GDP / Tim,
Landry definitely won’t line up as a classic X or Z but we all know how GB WCO likes to operate; interchangeable XYZ. Landry pretty much just is the much better version of Brandon Gibson.

  26. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle spoke to the media today for the first time since training camp opened.

On what a player has to do to win the CB competition between Brice McCain and Jamar Taylor: “Be one of the top two corners. That’s what he needs to do. Jamar is playing, I think, his best football since he’s been here in camp. He’s in a hotly contested battle with Brice McCain. Will Davis, we’re pleased with the way he’s coming.”

Well, Davis had a couple of significant bad moments in practice today. Michael Preston beat him on a deep TD throw from Matt Moore. And Matt Hazel also beat him for a TD.

LB Koa Misi left practice midway through, escorted by trainers. The unknown reason for him walking off is not believed serious.

When Misi left, Chris McCain played strongside linebacker, Kelvin Sheppard played middle linebacker and Jelani Jenkins took the weakside linebacker spot with the first-team defense.

With Misi’s durability a question coming off last season, the depth at linebacker is a question mark. But not to Coyle.

“I think it’s still early to tell if there are any holes,” he said. “I’ve been really impressed in our linebacking corps. I think we have a lot of depth in that group to be honest with you. Not a lot of flashy names but we have guys who have proven they’re going to quality players.”

  27. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

***The Dolphins are trying to develop a pool of potential returners — Bobby McCain, Kenny Stills, Brent Grimes, others — but Rizzi said Landry remains the frontrunner for both jobs.

“Right now you have to say he’s the best at both,” Rizzi said.

Just to be clear, I don’t know if Mathis is the answer for us. I’m inclined to let the line develop and go from there. My point was that I believe there are several reasons why he is not in camp; I concede that you make a valid point, but that is the same for everyone. For example, a guy retires from a $100k job, his boss offers him extra $20k to stay, guy says no, boss offers $30k guy says no, but starts to think about it. Boss says $50k final offer guy says, I’ll take the corner office.

LOL! I had a similar situation happen to be years ago. I gave my boss a months notice that I was leaving he asked why. Too many hours, not enough pay, got a better offer you are an asshole to work for sometimes.

    He said “well ok”

The next day he came to me and promised not to be an asshole to ME anymore. (he couldn’t guarantee that he would not be to others. LOL) and offered me a $10K raise and a company car.

    I said NOPE.

The next day he came to me and offered me a $20K raise a company car and two more weeks of paid vacation per year.

    I said NOPE sorry.

The next day he came to me and offered me a $25K raise a company car, two more weeks of vacation and 5% percent of the profit on any project I managed.

I said wow, really? why am I worth so much more today than I was last week? Sorry man but no.

The NEXT day he called me into his office and put $10K in CASH on the desk in front of me and told me to put it in my pocket. He then said that his last offer would stand but I could leave after 6 months and of course I would have to train my replacement. Just put the cash in your pocket and tell me you will stay until December and train your replacement and I will give you all the rest as well while you do it.

I was like WOW and was going to take it….and then the Accountant who I had been secretly dating and had recently broken up with walked past and gave me the stink eye…..I slid the money back across the desk at him and said nice try but I am still leaving in 3 weeks. LOL

Arian Foster’s Friday surgery will reattach Foster’s groin muscle to the bone.
He’ll soon be placed on injured reserve-designated for return, shelving Foster through Week 8 — at which point he’ll be eligible to practice — and keeping him out of games until Week 10. Foster’s injury is said to involve a 3-6 month recovery, meaning he’s no lock to play even when eligible. After whiffing on free agent Pierre Thomas, the Texans will give younger backs Chris Polk, Alfred Blue, Jonathan Grimes, and Kenny Hilliard chances to earn carries in an RBBC.

Can we finally beat these jokers?!?!

  44. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Trainers shut down Dallas Thomas, the projected starting left guard, on Wednesday because of a left shoulder injury he suffered during Tuesday’s practice. The team had already been practicing without starting left tackle Branden Albert, who is still recovering from knee surgery.

Thomas, who was competing with rookie Jamil Douglas for the starting spot, has battled shoulder issues for most of his college and NFL career.

The Dolphins selected the former University of Tennessee standout in the third round of the 2013 draft despite knowing he had his right shoulder surgically repaired that spring. Thomas missed all of organized team activities and minicamp his rookie season because of the injury, and he played sparingly as a rookie.

Last season Thomas served as the primary backup on the offensive line and started nine games at guard and tackle. However, Thomas allowed a team-leading seven sacks in his 695 snaps.

Douglas, a fourth-round pick this spring, and veteran Jeff Linkenbach shared the left guard workload during Wednesday’s practice. Douglas continues to cross-train, learning the right guard spot as well.

“Nobody has earned anything yet, so we want to kind of send that message,” coach Joe Philbin said about the guard competition.

It hasn’t been determined when Thomas might be able to return to practice.

He’s got a ton of talent, and an NFL arm for sure. He’s got all the physical attributes to make a good NFL QB, but IMO he’s got to get his head on straight and show a little more composure as the team leader. The OL was terrible last season, and I think he let that get into his head. He missed too many easy throws and threw a bunch of bad INT’s. Hopefully he can turn it around this season.

A message was left on my phone while I was at work informing me that my seasons tix would be going into the mail on Aug. 10, or thereabouts. Game one is Aug. 13. Luckily, it’s a road game in Chicago. And I’ll be in Chicago on business that day (but I won’t be going to the ball game b/c of an important dinner I’ve been invited to that evening.) HOWEVER, I WILL wear a Fins shirt under my jacket and tie that night. Get a couple of Colorado Kool-aids into me at dinner and who knows?? However, I’m hardly one to celebrate winning a preseason game.
    ——————
This person who left me the message also wanted me to re-state the details of the “security incident” that occurred in the parking lot during the Chiefs game last September 14. As a result of that incident, my wife will no longer attend Dolphin home games because there was NO SECURITY AT ALL in the Orange lot during the later portion of the 3rd quarter and all of the 4th quarter. The fact that I made the original complaint over 10 months ago and, to date, have received NO REPLY or apology at all has me more than a little upset at Dolphins management. All I can tell you folks is if you are going to a game, make sure you have the LEGAL weapon of choice in your car or truck because you sure can’t count on ANY security in portions of the parking lot.

  49. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

GDP’s report up the page about our starting Left Guard, Dallas Thomas, being shut down by trainers, is JUST the kind of news I feared when I raised the issue of Miami’s O-Line shortcomings earlier today. As camp drags on, it’s beginning to look like Brandon Albert either won’t play at all on week #1 OR will play at a level that is below his career standards. That does NOT mean we still can’t be successful, especially early in the season when we play teams that struggled last season. But when we get to the last 10 games of the year, I wonder what will be left of our O-Line? I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

OD, guys get banged up in camp. Let’s just hope we don’t suffer serious injuries like some other teams already have.

      • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

TIM; I hear ya on injuries. But, given Thomas’ history, I don’t expect him to play much, if at all, this season. This is a big blow in our weakest position, Guard. Don’t be surprised if the Fins make a move at guard in the next few days.

  50. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

For some of you who don’t mind some baseball and Mets talk. Remember when I said if this team can score 4-5 runs more often they can rip off a bunch of wins because of their pitching?

Well they just threw out a stat tonight that the Mets are 40-6 when they score 4 runs or more. It just goes to show you how many games they scored less than that before the moves they made at 57-50.

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

TIM; This Mets at Marlins game somehow remids me of the early days of the Jets-Dolphins rivalry. During the George Wilson era, Jet fans used to outnumber Dolphin fans in the Orange Bowl from ’66 to ’69. Most of the games were very lopsided. By the 3rd quarter, most Dolfans were already in their cars heading home (unless they were too drunk to drive home). Tonight, the Mets are well on their way to a 3rd straight blowout win over Miami in the Marlins home park! The Mets won the first two games by a combined score of 17-2. And tonight’s final probably won’t be close, either. Interim Marlins manager Dan Jennings is doing his best George Wilson impression with a 27-41 record good for a .367 winning percentage, the lowest in Marlins’ history. I believe the Marlins will finish dead last and fire yet ANOTHER MANAGER in Jennings!! But before you laugh too hard remember this: the Marlins actually won a world’s championship in 2003!! – – The Dolphins haven’t even won a single playoff game since 2000!!!

Maybe Mathis is asking for multi year guaranteed contract and the FO has to make a choice on signing him or signing miller or OV next year to long term. What do you do?

  55. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Steve, that’s why Mathis isn’t here or anywhere. He’s not getting a big multi-year deal from any team. 2-3 years tops from a team in a bind with incentives at best. He might not be into playing for lower than standard pay for him either and might retire. Some guys don’t want to go through the grind for less than what they feel their value is. Finnegan wasn’t going to play anymore for chump change and retired. We weren’t paying him $5M and he knew he wouldn’t get anywhere near that on the open market. That might be where Mathis is at.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I’m sure that’s part of it.

      • I posted this earlier.
Boulder posted that there hasn’t been a decent OL since Marino.
The last truly effective OL I can remember was in 2002 and consisted of:
        LT 63 Mark Dixon
        LG 66 Jamie Nails
        C 61 Tim Ruddy
        RG 75 Todd Perry
        RT 71 Todd Wade
We were playing really well until Jamie Nails went down, Seth McKinney took his spot and then we bombed.
There is no way I sign Mathis. Go with what we have or we may get lucky and have a quality OG fall into our laps after the final cuts. The young blokes should be given a chance to show what they have.

  56. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The important thing about Mathis is that the reality of it is he’s probably better than anyone we have on the roster to play G right now. You can think he’s on the downside of his career, but he’s still better than Dallas Thomas or Jamil Douglas. The only obstacles in signing him are the how much money he wants and how much money and how many years he wants guaranteed money for. That’s it. The question isn’t whether he would start here or not, not even close.

Not really. Last night was one of those “prevent defense” situations. Just wanted to throw O
Flaherty in there to see what he could do, and it’s important to keep in mind that he traveled from the west coast and didn’t get into FLA until 5PM. We’ll be getting Blevins and possibly Vic Black soon. After the 4 hits off O’Flaherty, it was like a snowball rolling downhill. Shit happens.

Familia’s problem is he’s not throwing enough strikes like he did in the first half of the season. He gets in too many long counts and guys sit on pitches. He’s got to get ahead of these guys.

I am on the fence about Mathis. I get Mike E’s point that he is probably better than any one on the roster at the moment but not sure it is best for this team to have him play as opposed to have Douglas and Turner and Thomas get their playing time. They have much greater upside than Mathis at this point and signing Mathis is going to cost and we don’t have a ton of cap space for next year. Also Mathis is a better run blocker than pass protector. He may not be that much of an upgrade over what we already have.
