It’s (Preseason) GAME DAY! #2

header(Header from CBS Sports)

The joint practices between the Dolphins and Panthers wrap up tonight with preseason game 2 in Charlotte.  After warnings about fighting with the opposing teams, only one minor skirmish was reported during the joint practice sessions.  Not so bad.  Each team lost a player for the season with an ACL injury.  Delmas for the Dolphins and WR Kelvin Benjamin for the Panthers.  Not so good.  There were also reports the Panthers coaching staff asked the Dolphins to dial back their pass rush because the Panthers were overwhelmed OR alternatively both teams agreed to dial it back for a 2 minute drill.   Whatever you need to tell yourself.  Either way, it will all be settled with the game tonight.

They don’t want to show what they’re going to do in the regular season on the goal line.

That was a great job by Turner in recognizing where the rush was coming from and getting enough of a nudge to let Tannehill get the ball off. He looks like he is learning the speed of the game.

  28. ocalahowie's avatar ocalahowie says:

    I dont know about that;
After 2 games our sucky guys must rank worst in the league against all the other sucky guys…
Lord help us if we have to start plugging them guys in for any length of time

    • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

I’ve thought a bit about that- if our entire second line had to face another’s 1st line, we’d be in a shitload of trouble-but wouldn’t all teams? If we lose one guy on the line for a period of time and have to plug in his backup, we might see a bit of a drop off, but we’d still be formidable. How often does a team’s entire unit go down?

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If Alberts isn’t ready I think Fox will be adequate, and we have 3 OGs Thomas/Turner/Douglas, so if one of those 3 has an issue we can still function near the same level, and Brenner seems to be able to hold down C. If we need all 3 of these backups to start I still think we’ll be ok, that’s what ZB and quick passes allows and RT seems to have solved his accuracy and pocket presence issues.

  29. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Our ones look great. The twos did okay but if we get down to threes and fours we will really suck

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Thankfully we won’t have 3s and 4s come regular season. We haven’t given up a TD until late in both games, so the guys that are going to be on the team are playing great on D. The backup Oline has made things difficult for Moore, Colonblowesque.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

True. But depth is an issue for us. I think it is why we were not in the playoffs last year. Injuries on OL and secondary cost us late in the year. I think our ones are really good. It’s the depth behind them I worry about.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We weren’t in the playoffs last yr, because RTs stones hadn’t dropped yet 😉

  30. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

With the starters in last night I noticed the Panthers receivers dropping a lot of passes, seemed like last yr with us, when RT had accuracy issues. Cam has RT 2014 accuracy 😉

A top 5/10 QB, given what the passes rules are today, can mask a lot of other issues on the team. If RT plays this yr like he has practiced and played in the first 2 preseason games, then I see him in this category.

The pass play to Miller last night was an I can anything you can do better type of play. A pass rusher got some pressure, RT avoided him, Miller had a defender ready to make an open field tackle, he put a move on him that should’ve broken his ankles.

  34. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Of the three passes he missed, Tannehill guided or telegraphed them all too much. Or you could say he just tried to force the ball in to the WR by sheer velocity. I think he still sometimes is too obedient to the playcall or coaching. Like on the throw to Landry slanting in for the TD that did not get caught. It was like Tannehill said ok they want us to make this thing to Landry work, so here it goes no matter that the DB sees it and saw it on tape from last week.

Other than that the kid was damn near perfect.

  35. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

PS: I think they are hiding some stuff they will do in the RZ and saving it for the real games. (All teams do that.) For example throws to Cameron. I think Cameron has been grossly underutilized on purpose, Jennings too. Not to mention that Stills and Parker have yet to be employed for real.
    WOW

  36. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    ———————————-
Might be our scrubs suck cause at most positions the word is out that the Phins are not a place where a UDFA or low level FA can make the roster. For instance, why would a DL, WR or CB looking to be part of a 53 come here?

  39. bat's avatar bat says:

    ” Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly · 1h1 hour ago

Twitterella once again displays the ignorance of the “trained eye” as he attempts to equate the misguided belief in the clearly over matched and perpetually struggling Henne to the steady progress and improvement shown by Tannehill.

  40. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I forgot about Reshad Jones, forget about our MLB making plays in the backfield, it’s his house. He was all over the field last night. I see All-Pro in his near future, but I hope he doesn’t play in the PB for a while 😉

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I agree totally with both of these thoughts. It was Reshad not LBs who benefited from Suh eating up blockers, which worked out just fine last night. He has very quick feet and is decisive when he hunts down the RB behind the line. And he wraps up and his man hits the turf every time.

  41. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I almost got in an accident while listening to QAM yesterday when Omar said, “Tannehill has gotten better and better each year…..that’s what the great ones do.”

  43. ocalahowie's avatar ocalahowie says:

Remember they where checking Fox for Concussion but I would say the O-Line did quite well for whoever was is at any one time.
I’m more concerned about the whole team of Defensive backups.
I am liking me some Vigil, That dude plays like a seasoned veteran.
A little bit different but another Zach Thomas in the offing…
    GO PHINS!!!

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Howie — Vigil looks awesome, but every year there is a 7-11. Given what we have at LB though, a good unit for a guy like that to find a spot.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think Vigil will probably make the team

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

A WR can shine in the preseason, because he may not be accountable for, but then he fades when a first team CB mans up on him. With Vigil you can see he has the instincts necessary to play ILB and that will translate to the regular season. I think he’s already made the 53.

  44. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I saw Suh on the sideline looking pissed off like he wanted to play longer and hit more people. He did not get any stats and I think that is bothering him and his steam is building up so when we release him to play more, he is gonna blow up some team’s whole first quarter.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Suh’s stats are the team Ds stats while he’s playing. We had a couple of 3 and outs, that’s better than him getting 3 sacks on a drive where they take the ball from their 20 to our 20 and kick a FG.

  45. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Still, our first D has been in for six drives (more or less). 3 3 and outs, an INT, and a goal line stand where they repelled four straight plays from inside the five. (Even stonewalling the great Cam Newton). That’s awesome.

  54. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    From Hyde 5
Uh, about that replay challenge. From the 3-yard line, Damien Williams went over right end and stretched for the pylon. He was ruled short of the end zone as he went out of bounds. Philbin challenged. On replay, it was seen Williams actually lost control of the ball before the pylon. So instead of the Dolphins keeping the ball a few inches from the end zone, the replay challenge backfired to give Carolina the ball on a touchback. Yes, sure, it’s preseason and it doesn’t matter. But if the coaches are judging players … it’s not the kind of play that inspires confidence and, if it had been a real game, would have got Joe Philbin skewered (and who in the press box counseled him). “Great decision,” Philbin said, deadpan, to CBS-4 at halftime.

Doesn’t anyone know what the rule is? I don’t think the ref that looked at the replay did either. If you touch the pylon before going out of bounds, then yes of course it’s a td, but the instance you touch the pylon isn’t the instance when the ball crosses the goal line. I think the ball crossed the goal line before he fumbled, because he lost the ball on his downward decent to the pylon. Tards showing the replay wouldn’t show the goal line angle.

  55. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Just learned where I’ll draft in one of my FF Leagues and took my first look at the rankings……different world this year. Only six QBs are ranked 82nd or below. That means they are suggesting that half the guys in a 12-team league won’t be selecting a thrower till 7th round or later.

Maybe QBs in fantasy are going the way of RBs on the actual field……..tandems.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I read a good article on FF, it said to take the top 2 or 3 guys at a position before taking the 4th – 12th best at another position. The logic was that the 2nd tier guys weren’t that far apart. In the first take an RB, if you have picks 1-6, if not take a top guy at another position like a Gronk. Obviously the first round is different on a pt per reception league.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I agree with that completely. My position to do that with had always been RB, but that didn’t work out so well. Maybe it was just bad luck (curse you Zac Stacy…..had him in two leagues), but maybe it is a passing league now. Thinking about doing the same with wideouts this year.

  56. bat's avatar bat says:

Steve … Unless it was a third or fourth down play, it’s an idiotic challenge. You don’t risk a TO with at least two more chances to score from the two inch line and a 14-0 lead. No logic or common sense there just coaches anxious to prove how clever they are.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s preseason, so I wouldn’t put too much into it. In the regular season I think they’ll be more careful, at least I hope they will after what happened last night.

  57. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Tanny’s passer rating so far in the preseason is 126.9.

  58. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It was a pretty dumb decision to challenge that play

We were at the inch line
Why not just watch your goalline offense for another play or 2

I guess Philbin was trying to get Williams another TD or soemthing

I think the touchback was a little bit unpredictable
But you have to be aware that refs can review anything on the review

So the been for of getting that TD right there isn’t that great

  59. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

  60. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s PS, coaches can take chances too. These are practice games nothing more.

Like we could have tied the game with an Xpt but we went for 2. We would have done things differently in a RS game.

  61. ocalahowie's avatar ocalahowie says:

Great goal line stand on their inssuing drive though. except we let them get 79yds before it

  62. bat's avatar bat says:

Tim … I realize that your reflex instinct is to defend everything and anything this staff does, but you’re way off on this one. As Piggy said, why not give your goal line offense a couple more reps to pound it in? What was to be gained by the coaches inserting themselves there? That was a stupid challenge and would have been a stupid challenge in the regular season. Were the coaches trying to hone their ability to make stupid challenges? It is not at all the same as going for two instead of tying the game. That has a purpose of giving young guys experience in a pressure situation. The challenge was self indulgent idiocy on the part of a couple of coaches. Had it succeeded, it would have been no less stupid …IMO

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I am pretty sure I saw an assistant coach demanding that Philbin throw the red flag. He was very doubtful, but the guy had a headset on, and I think the call was coming down from the coaches upstairs to challenge. I don’t think Philbin wanted to do it, but afterwards he took the blame instead of throwing his guys under the bus, which is a great thing to do and ultimately it was his decision anyway, but he did get bad advice.

  63. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I thought Suh was the one who chased Newton out of the pocket on 4th down.

  64. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I was actually not aware that the refs could come up with a third version of the play call upon review. I am not actually sure that they CAN do that. It seems unfair to me. They made their call and the challenge is that the call was “backwards” so they should have to say either yes it was backwards and reverse it or no it was correct and let it stand. I don’t think they should get a “do-over” anymore than a QB gets to have his INT back if his OG got a flag for holding. The INT stands and the D just declines the penalty.

  65. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

To me, both Offense and Defense are perfect after 2 games (They can’t be responsible for plays made while they are on the bench.) The O has scored 4 TDs in 4 drives (if Philbin doesn’t challenge) and the D has let in ZERO TDs: 3 3 and outs, 1 INT, & a goal line stand against 4 downs.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We didn’t score last night on the opening drive, so 4 TDs in 5 drives, but I’m right there with you.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

And to take it a step further on D, we haven’t given up a TD before mid 3rd qtr in either game.

I also think that new guy Philip Thomas is a big hard hitter. I think we have plenty of good young DBs and figuring out who can be trusted out there not to give up a TD will decide about cutting to 9 or 10.

Mike E, nice birthday weekend with a Mets 3 game sweep of the Rockies, first time ever in Colorado. 5 games up! 😉

We’re also in the WC race with the West LA and SF.

    getter,

if he is healthy, i think it would be a good idea, especially as a back up

    tim,

yeah you and mike e might as well start the celebration. the mets have it wrapped up.

Jake Long is not wishful thinking to me. Guy is a walking injury. Fox has a 1 week concussion protocol? So…we don’t play him for a week and just keep getting ready for Albert. I can’t see Long being the answer since he never really was the answer.

Sam Baker might be available too….
But is Fox misses next week’s game, the dress rehearsal game, then you got to think Tanny shouldn’t play more than a series. He could get hurt behind that weakening left side.

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Yeah, the Tanny i’ve seen is ready for the season. I’m not a big fan of playing just to play. If they seriously have to play Tanny then just do extra protection. Jake Long has never been cheap and has always valued himself too much. If Fox is injured more than a regular concussion protocol allows, then get someone but tanny is pretty ready to me.

Ryan Tannehill and Cam Newton both received sizable contract extensions in the offseason. The Miami Dolphins gave Tannehill a $96 million contract, and the Carolina Panthers gave Newton $103 million.

But Tannehill clearly outshined Newton in a head-to-head meeting in Saturday’s preseason game. Tannehill was 12-of-15 for 102 yards and a touchdown in a loss to the Panthers to get Miami’s game ball. Newton was 4-of-10 passing for 42 yards and an interception.

Tannehill is turning the best training camp of his career into the best preseason of his career. He is completing an astounding 81 percent of his passes through two preseason games. Tannehill also has three touchdown drives and two touchdown passes in three quarters.

To think I actually argued with SOmeoNe about who the better quarterback was earlier this year. SOmeoNe actually going so far as to say that it would be a good trade……..I guess it is only preseason, but….

Tanny is ready, but his weapons need to keep playing to get ready with him, catch up to him so to speak, or catch up to the Lazor system.

The biggest thing that stuck out to me watching last night was seeing Tanny in complete command of this team now. He was directing guys, getting loud, and executing.

He’s arrived on the NFL scene as a top QB now….and with Suh on the other side of the ball, there should be no reason we miss the playoffs.
Actually I’m looking at a division TITLE if most of our top starters stay healthy.

    Go Phins!

I’m not eating the cheese this year. LOL When things have such a strong appearance of improvement that even the most die hard HDS member is taking tiny sips of the Koolaid and commenting on the flavor, I am hesitant. To steal from OD, SHOW ME. (please please please)

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

He will show show show ya…hell he already has!!!
To make the playoffs the rest of the team needed to be better….we are now seeing that with another good offseason of moves in year 2 of Hickey, year 2 of Lazor, etc etc.
