Ba- Bye Week

Step up Rah Rah Guy

by son of a son of a shula

A process man in a results driven league, it didn’t work. Imagine busting your ass to achieve results but getting needled about every step you took to get the desired results. It becomes demoralizing. I can only imagine what it must have been like for the players under Philbin, but I suspect they got needled to the point of insanity when the coaches reviewed film. Despite the effort, despite whatever results you were likely raked over the coals because you didn’t do the process correctly, perhaps you went off script or let your instincts take over it didn’t matter you were held accountable. Pretty soon all you have left is a heartless, demoralized shell of team going through the process.  Being a smart or heady player is a good quality for a pro athlete but that’s a small part of what got you there, most often your God given ability and instincts are what set you apart. When that part of you gets suppressed you become ineffective, listless and non-caring, because if there is something else then perhaps it’s on the players and not the coaching.

How can your team get rushed on to the tune of over one hundred yards in the first half alone and you don’t yell at anyone? No one.

How can your offense struggle to even put thirteen points on the board and you don’t yell at anyone? No one.

How can you do the same thing every single week when it hasn’t worked and not try anything different?

Since Steve Ross has decided to make the change all we can do as fans is hope, like we’re always left with. Hope that Campbell’s intensity gets through to the players or hope we get the first pick in the draft. To me I find it refreshing to see a coach who gets excited, who tries to inspire his men, who actually yells at them. It’s easy to say that these guys are well paid professionals who shouldn’t need a coach to motivate them and that is largely true, but by the same token you can’t have a coach and coaching staff that by their very actions and beliefs completely demoralizes and uninspires the players. This is where I think the disconnect has occurred. Philbin believed in a process, in development and strict execution of his way. I believe he required certain things from his coaches who thereby passed those things onto the players and we subsequently end up with an uninspired, flat, directionless team. Enter Campbell, a hardass who will demand performance from his players. You won’t have to complete steps 1-12 to earn playing time for Campbell, he just wants to see you play with your ability and talent and see it all pour out of you.

Can Campbell reignite the flame and passion in this group? Can he unite this team and get them working together? Forget a playoff run for the time being, like many have already said we just want to see the team play inspired football and be competitive. Is passion the missing ingredient? Maybe just simply yelling might be the missing ingredient. Maybe being held accountable right at the moment will do it rather than waiting for the coach to watch a film before you get lambasted. If a guy screws up during a game then yelling at him or sitting him will serve a greater good than waiting until Tuesday in a meeting to be evaluated and chastised. With any luck Campbell will put this team on the attack, have them stop thinking and start hitting.

My biggest hope is that Campbell is better able to have the team prepared when they take the field. We looked outmatched so far in each of the four games. Was Philbin and his staff deficient in breaking down the opponent? Were they poor game planners? What I hope for is that Campbell will be better able to see weaknesses in the opponent and put his team in a position to attack those weaknesses, you know the way teams have been doing to us. Bring the fight to them.

I have wanted a young, fired up, in your face coach for some time now. I hoped the best for Joe Philbin but on game day he made me crazy that he was so emotionless, lacked a certain fire and intensity and all the while bad things continued to happen. I advocated for bringing in Ray Lewis to coach the team in large part because of his intensity and fire feeling that today’s young athletes would feed off of that. Well in comes Dan Campbell who by all indications is exactly what I was advocating for. I wish him the best. I hope the team pulls their collective head out of their ass and starts to play the kind of football we all expected from this group. Shift me to perpetual show me mode, I’ve been burned enough.

Intensity

This song sums up how I feel about the Dolphins:

Bye Week Bi-Babe

Kristanna Loken

On identifying as bisexual: “I have dated and have had sex with men and women and have to say that the relationships I have had with certain women have been much more fulfilling, sexually and emotionally, than those with certain men. I connect with an aura, with energy. And if the person with whom I connect happens to be a female, that’s just the way it is. That’s what makes my wheels turn,” Loken told Curve in 2006.

the only way the dolphins do anything is if it is true, the players quit on philbin. they guy is not going to come in and be some miracle coach with his new coaching philosophy and make the fins a winner. if the players were tanking it and now dont, then they have a chance. if there just isnt enough talent on this team no coaching in the world will help it

Hope it is, Son- that’s really all we got. Reality says we’re not likely to change our destiny, but it would be nice to see some intensity out of these guys. There’s really only so much a positional coach turned head coach mid season can do, and none of that can do the thing really needed- getting the players that fit the team he wants to build- so hope is all that’s left.

Let’s see how the dems respond to this. A lot of my friends at VFW think the same thing. The guy is not a hero as Obama and Susan Rice said. Trump may get the military vote with him telling the truth about his feelings about this Bowe Bergdahl

    • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

I try not to get my take from a bunch of old guys hanging out at a VFW- they tend to favor one party over another. If Bergdahl is a traitor, so is Snowden. I also like to let the process run its course, which in this case it has not- it has been spun from the beginning.

      • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

All that said, I don’t think most here really care one way or the other about it; I have to admit, it is not all that interesting of a story to me, and none of my friends/acquaintances have ever brought it up (not that I run in really thoughtful circles- lol).

      • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

you are correct, both are traitors but I don’t believe Snowden is a expert in security of NSA considering he didn’t even have HS diploma and then was kicked out of military and all of sudden he was a security guard for NSA then he gets promoted to work inside NSA and all of sudden he gets unlimited access to NSA files and then he is computer expert. It just doesn’t work that way. You notice Snowden is in the headlines about every 3 weeks this is not by accident.

So the miami dolphins promoting dan campbell to head coach & Lou Anarumo to defensive coordinator neither of whom you have ever held a position higher than position coach in one who was an intern a few years ago… An intern who was made a position coach who could not develop or improve the play of our shitty cornerbacks…who do you think Tannenbum is angling for with the first pick in the draft?

  10. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

A huge deal was made out of Joe Philbin never calling plays as an offensive coordinator. These guys have never even put together a game plan let alone call plays on gameday

  11. jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

I saw a news report where only 20 or so players got action in the Oklahoma drill if I was Dan I would have the players go to another Oklahoma drill 10 seconds after finishing 1st Oklahoma drill. This way every player gets to do the drill and they get multiple chances. In three hours they are limited because of CBA rules but each player can do this drill 300 -400 times if they set it up right.

  12. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Philbin is no longer here. What he was doing wasnt working. Our record is now 0-0 and we have a 12 game season. Time to get behind our new leaders who seem to understand what needs to be done. Hopefully we are at the very least competitive and making the playoffs on a miracle.

  13. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

SON; VERY NICE EFFORT. —Of course I believe shifting to the “SHOW ME” school of thought is both wise and better for your psychological health, too!! –But let’s not over look a few factors. –TANNENBAUM’s the one who used the first 2 picks in the draft for players who, so far, have had little positive impact during our first 4 games. Genius T-Baum waited until ROUND 4 to try to plug one of the two gaping holes in our O-Line. Strangely enough, that guy is rated by PFF as one of the two worst guards in the league (The OTHER Miami guard is rated as second worst). –And T-Baum is the one who advised Ross to NOT change the coaching staff during the off-season when a much bigger pool of possible replacements was available. SOOO-O-O the only practical options left after “Clueless Joe” was fired was to promote from within – – a dangerous option given the overall lack of experience in what’s left of this coaching staff.
    ——————-
I HOPE this coaching staff will bring significant improvement to Miami’s on field performance. -We ALL want that. -But it is NOT guaranteed at this point. Campbell is really “up against it” thanks to the predicament Mike Tannenbaum has put this franchise in. Low talent in the O-Line. Problems at linebacker and the secondary. MAJOR CAP PROBLEMS. The list goes on and on. IF Philbin deserved to be fired then the man MOST RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS MESS ALSO DESERVED TO BE FIRED!! – – And THAT MAN IS MIKE TANNENBAUM, for the poor advice and poor leadership he’s given Ross’s franchise.
    —————
This team right now is NOT a playoff quality team. Campbell will try very hard, but I’d be shocked if we won MORE THAN 6 games this season (hope I’m wrong). At the end of this season, ROSS MUST REPLACE T-BAUM with somebody like Polian who knows how to turn a franchise around and steer it in a positive direction. DON’T wait until the middle of NEXT SEASON to do it!

Guy turns to the GM as his in house “rock of stability”
Guy understands a coaching issue and fires tony
Guy try’s to hire “big time coach”
But tells candidates they will have to marry “rock of stability”
    “Big times coaches” bow out
Guy ultimately settles for an average joe coach
Guy becomes disillusioned with “rock of stability”
    And fires him
Guy sets out to hire new GM
Explains to candidates that they will have no power over his new glom
His new “rock of stability” average joe
Candidates one after another bow out of the process
And guy makes a settle hire,
Apparently this doesn’t take very long to scratch ones head and enter
The new “rock of stability” Mike T
A few games into a new season and guy fires average joe
    Wow

All of this rather short circus show now has the fins
Viewed as a toxic mess in Miami

Guess the big question becomes, in the coming months
Will guy attempt to force candidates on his new
    “Rock of stability”
Or does he attempt to find the best of the best
And once and for all clean house ?

I haven’t seen people not playing hard or laying down. I see a team playing the way they were coached. You can bring up Landry but that guy is a special talent. If the whole team was like Landry then he wouldn’t be special.

So Philbin was telling everyone to do the wrong thing? It’s definitely an effort situation, Campbell stressed that 1000X

      • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I think philbin thought he was doing the right thing and they were doing what he wanted. I’ve had plenty of bosses like that. Have you seen Suh not playing hard?

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I haven’t seen him be anything close to special, as you say Landry is. Why can Landry do it, but Suh can’t? Landry bust his ass after he makes the catch, fights for every inch. maybe if Suh did that in the trenches, he’d a few tackles in the backfield, and a few sacks.

  19. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m not defending Philbin at all, I couldn’t stand him, but the players are responsible for their play too. Guys not making tackles when they get their hands on a guy is all on them. Guys not giving extra effort when it’s necessary is all on them.

  20. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Suh and Landry are two different positions on different sides of the field. On can be double and tripled teamed and have his legs taken out and the other doesnt. Results don’t equal effort.

  24. jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

I ‘ve rewatched every game so far this year including pre season and I can say Suh is not the problem. He’s always the first off the snap taking on 2-3 blockers and sometimes getting chipped by rb’s and te’s. He gets paid the big bucks because he disrupts plays which he does and has done. Throughout his career he only averages 40-50 tackles a year and that is solo and asst combined. He’s on that pace. The guy is a tough SOB that plays every down.I saw him dropping back into coverage last week and playing de.He is still getting accustomed to playing with everyone but he is not the problem.

Like Tim is fond of saying, its hard to believe a DC could really abruptly change things so badly that we look like this. Same for OC, but everything i have seen says this isnt on the players, at least not fully, and mostly on coaching/play-calling. Our players are better than they have looks and it does not look to be half assing or lack of effort from every position. There are a few people on each side of the ball that stand out to me as under-performing some are playing hard just not getting the job done, some look to be laying up some, but for an entire unit to look that bad, its going to be coaching that most at blame.

What that means is he hasn’t even come close to doing what he what I, and just about every other Dolphins fan, if he’s/she’s being honest, expected him to do. I guess you can’t include yourself in this group. You’re lucky, you’re not disappointed.

      • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

have you looked up his career stats to compare them to what he is doing 4 games now into season? Did everyone think he was going to produce 70-80 tackles a year? 29. D's avatar D says:

DT’s don’t rack up tackles, even dominat ones generally get 30-40 a year. Stat you are looking for with a DT like Suh is TFL, sacks and FF. Thats what the Detroit Suh was known for. Its also because he wasn’t asked to fake up blockers/fill gaps. He was set to penetrate the line and make plays in the backfield on all downs. Scheme is most the reasons he has not been putting up the stats he should be and i hope if aggressive play-calling is returning next game, then we also see more TFl/Sacks from him, and if we are lucky a FF or two.

To start, I want to say I respect you Son, and I always respect the work all of you contributors put into the articles. It gives folks like me something to stew on.

Having said that I stewed on this, and I could not disagree more fundamentally with the picture you painted of the team under Philbin. Philbin didn’t do enough to save his job, that I acknowledge, but spoiled- over paid players who couldn’t stand up to some detail oriented coaching? Mental midgets- and I bet dollars to donuts that that’s what every great coach who’s ever coached would say as well. Your man cited Philbin as being a major reason he signed here, now we’re to believe that Philbin did him in? He’s been a no-show, that’s not on the coaches. If you’re the “future HOF player” that Suh is said to be, he’s not crumbling to a shell of his former play because of a little nitpicking.

If this picture of the team under Philbin is even remotely close to reality, the players are at fault. Do your job. Own up to your responsibilities. Most of you make more than the head coach, some of you make 10x what the HC makes. Demoralized because their film was nitpicked? I call that weak mindedness. If our players are that weak minded it’s no wonder they’re a bunch of losers.

Philbin’s respect in this business from the most respected coaches and executives in this business is inescapable. Again, I gave up the ghost because for whatever reason he wasn’t getting then job done and in the end, you don’t win in this league, you’re going to lose your job. But I can only hope and pray that we don’t have 53 guys who need cheerleading to win, because if that’s the case we needed to hire Rex Ryan last offseason, get 2 years of competitive football out of them and blow the whole thing up.

My bias: I was an athlete who thrived under tough coaches. The task masters, the nitpickers, the perfectionists. They pissed me off, and it made me want to work even harder, succeed that much more. Rah rah is for people who require constant affirmation for motivation, and in the end I question their desire to be great. They aren’t intrinsically motivated, they’re extrinsically motivated, and that’s rarely a recipe for long term success.

Thanks for the thoughtful article and the chance to express my thoughts on the subject.

I really can’t disagree, but its hard to put a finger on what the hell happened. I put this out there as a hypothesis mainly. I always liked Joe and everything we heard from last year’s end clear through camp was that everything was hunky dory and everyone loved coach and he changed his ways some to be more like the guys and so on and then all of a sudden we have this crap. I don’t get it and I don’t understand it.

That’s fair, and I feel the same way. I simply don’t have any answers. It’s likely the fault falls on every single member of this organization, owners to coaches to players to support staff, and that’s the scariest prospect of them all.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Thanks. I think it’s fair if you say the scheme doesn’t use his abilities to their best, but to say a coach didn’t motivate him properly is bullshit. He needs to get to the QB, and he’s not.

  40. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ha! I didn’t call him Haynesworth. I crossed it out! We don’t have to discuss him if it you don’t want to, but until he does something that makes me think “That’s what I expected from Suh”, I’ll point that he hasn’t done it, just like I do with all the players.

For the record I have never claimed Suh needed a rah rah coach, I have felt he’s been fine and when the rest of his team mates get up to speed we might be able to call it pro football. Again I ask where is Wake? Where is Vernon? Where are the linebackers? And then I ask you to watch closely to what Suh is doing.

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

When he’s getting double or triple teamed constantly then that’s all he can do. Teams don’t have to move protection out of the middle because Wake and Vernon are being blocked by the Tackles without any help. If the edge pressure comes then the line has to spread out and that’s when trouble starts for the O because most times you can’t block Suh with a single man.

I will say this about Philbin’s firing. I think he deserved it for no other reason alone than his defense of Kevin Coyle to the bitter end. His failure to force Coyle to change from his loose coverage schemes and his read and react defensive line schemes warranted his dismissal. It was clear for a long time that those schemes were not working and furthermore it was clear for a while that Coyle had a toxic relationship with many of his players. Instead of trying to force a change with Coyle or to outright let Coyle go Philbin defended his guy to the bitter end. Loyalty is a nice thing but not when it comes at a price to the team and for that regardless of how well regarded Joe is I think his firing was warranted for that reason alone.

So does the firing of Philbin and promotion of Campbell and co. make the Phins a better team? FIN (Fucked If kNow). However, Ross had no choice. The product on the field was unacceptable. The fact of the matter is we were headed for the bottom of the pack with the status quo. So why not make a change? What is the worst that can happen? We wind up with the first pick which is where we were headed anyways? Furthermore you can’t expect to get interim people from the outside. No one is going to a HC or DC position on an interim basis from the outside. They will wait till the end of the season for permanent positions to open up.

As I said I respect the enthusiasm but the reality is that we have a first time HC who has never even been a coordinator, We now have a first time DC and we have some kind of 2 headed monster at OC to go along with an already demoralized team that stands at 1-3. The realistic possibilities of this team being anything more than a 6-10 team are extremely small. Don’t get me wrong I would love nothing more for this team to make a run and get to the play offs. But if it did so it would be a run of historic proportions because I don’t think an interim HC has ever brought his team to the playoffs in the modern era of football.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I don’t think an interim HC has ever brought his team to the playoffs in the modern era of football.
      ______________________________
That’s because as I mentioned 95% of all past ‘interim’ coaches were given the reigns with a few games left or when the team was mathematically out of contention.

Campbell a 1 st HC like Philbin was has a full 12 games, only 1 down in the wild card race.
12 games is almost a full 14 game season of past. Let’s see what he can do. I really hope he wins the permanent job for 2016 & beyond. He’ll tweak the coordinators more then.

Jahn in reply to your post above. I actually think the player were behind Philbin, but im not sure they are with the coordinators, or at least they werent too happy with what plays they were calling or the offensive/defensive scheme. I dont know that they deliberately did anything to sabotage the coaches, i think thats media propaganda. I do think they were frustrated by some things, because people with a background of personal excellence as Suh has shown himself to be at all previous stops, would get frustrated with anything that stayed in the way of that excellence.

IMO, Philbin became collateral damage from not correcting the coordinator situation and allowing them to ruin the team. His failure was one of inaction, and an presenting an image of almost apathy to the situation, Every player, every FO person, every coach under him seems to make it sound like he was a great guy, he just couldnt manage the team, so i find it very hard to believe the players turned on him to get him fired.

  70. D's avatar D says:

A successful HC in the NFL could come from whatever position they were at before they dont need previous experience, they dont need to have been an OC/DC before, its about the person and what he can get out of the resources he has. Its about lining up against the other team and popping them in the mouth. Campbell has as much chance to turn the team around as anyone would, but im in the boat with Ken on thismatter, its going to be a tough burden for him to carry as it would be for anyone and i give him the same chance at success as anyone one, not a lot given the circumstance. I will hold out hope for him, but reality is not on his side. Ill be pleased with him transformting this team from an embarassment to a tough out every game, he does that and he deserves to be praised for it.

When Todd Bowles became interim HC after Sparano was fired, he went 2-1 after Sparano only won 3 games in 13. So most interim HCs don’t get 12 games like GD said, so who knows what can happen. Not many interim HCs get this many games to work with.

That was a 3 game stretch against a pretty mediocre Bills team at the time and if I remember right a pretty mediocre Jets team at the time as well. We still have 4 games left against our divisional rivals, all of whom are better teams than we are right now. Now for the good news the NFC east does not look as strong as originally anticipated so games vs. Eagles and Dallas not as tough as originally anticipated and the Colts while leading their division look to be not as tough as originally anticipated. We also get the Texans in there who don’t look to be a very good team right now. So there are some wins to be had in this schedule but those teams are all looking at us and saying there is a win to be had on their schedule.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Campbell was the starting tight end for Dallas in 2003 when the Cowboys drafted Witten to eventually be the replacement. Campbell spent three seasons with Witten – now a 10-time Pro Bowler – and taught Witten a lot about leadership in his formative NFL years.

“Dan was great. I think Dan was a tough guy. He was a leader. He loved football. He was passionate about it,” Witten said, via ESPN Cowboys reporter Todd Archer. “So, he’s transitioned as a coach and I think he’ll do a good job. And he’ll embrace that opportunity as a guy that really does a great job in kind of focusing on the now and being great today. He embodies that in the way he played, and I’m sure he’s that way as a coach.”

Campbell is a fighter who won’t go down easy, according to Witten.

“I think guys rally behind him and they’ll do a great job at that,” Witten said. “He’ll give everything he’s got.”

Regardless of their motivations, their sacrifice is undeniable, and thats not even taking into consideration they could die. I do though have to really respect their families too, maybe even more so than them, as they at least know what their duty is and they know that their families are likely safe at home. For the familiaes of the soldiers, however, every day could be the day they get the worse news of their lives, and especially the children have a hard time really being able to handle that. Im very happy any time i see any organization taking the time to not only honor soldiers but to also bring even a small momeny of supreme joy to their family’s lives.

I have seen every game, and I can see Suh making fundamental mistakes every game. He is being asked to play different assignments than he has in the past, but he’s screwing up stuff he should have learned in high school. Feeling an OL taking him one way and fighting his way over the block to fill the gap being created behind him. Gap integrity. Letting guys take out his legs…very easily remedied. Playing way too high too often and letting OL control him with their hands by getting inside leverage on him. And the missed tackles…or attempted tackles…My god….did he forget how to tackle? Where’s the effort? He is seeing more guys on him, but that’s his job on some plays. You’re allowed to beat a double team every now and then when you’re a superstar.
    ***
No, it’s not that he’s not playing OK. He’s playing undisciplined and just stupid. Why? He’s a very bright football player. This shit is remedial. Is it simply because he doesn’t like what he’s being asked to do? There’s no excuse for doing some of the stuff he’s doing. He typically plays a lot better. I can’t say he’s doing it on purpose because I’m not in his head, but it makes me wonder what the hell he is thinking.

If you guys go back to the archives I was one of the few dead set against signing him as the highest paid defensive player ever and bemoaned the salary cap ramifications from the start. Stabby dropped more TD passed then he caught and Wallace had good #2 receiver stats, but didn’t track the ball or adjust to it well in the air. Wallace was good with Big Ben doing Big Ben’s thing scrambling around 15 yards behind the line of scrimmage and then chucking it up to Marchall who had by then turned around and was waiting for the ball.

  95. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Piggy,
Why not? Players are more and more using their influence when they are superstars or highly paid players to get what they want from the team. I would bet it happens a lot more often than fans hear about. Players undermining coaches? It’s been going on for a long time in many sports.

I have said it many time, for our team to look THIS bad, there would have to be multiple players playing bad on purpose. Individual player performance doesnt move the needle on the unit as a whole like bad scheming/play calling. Thats a more global effect and makes the whole unit look inept.
