Welcome to Ask Mike – 2015 Season Week 7

ASKMIKELogo

Rejoice Dolphins fans! Dan Campbell found all these talented, hungry players in one week! It’s amazing that he was able to turn over the entire roster and bring in all these great players in such a short time. Astounding. What’s even more unbelievable is that all these players happened to be on our roster, just waiting to break out. OK, so that’s not really what happened. Or is it?

Dan Gatorade

I want more Gatorade showers!

I’ve always felt that Joe didn’t have his team prepared, and when I say prepared, I don’t mean they didn’t understand what they had to do, or where they had to go, but I mean HUNGRY, and EAGER to do it. There were a handful of games under Joe Philbin’s tenure that I felt that our team was the hungrier team. The fact is, we SAW what hungry was last week, and SAW how good this team can be when they play hungry.

Let’s start with the offense. A renewed commitment to to the running game paid dividends last week. I know we all called for it, but finally, someone told the other coaches that we have to do it, and stick with it no matter what! Lamar Miller ran for 113 yards on 19 carries. Jonas Gray added another 24 yards on 7 carries. Jarvis Landry had a beautiful run, a determined run for 22 yards and a TD on the Statue of Liberty play. He probably should have had about 16 yards, but he fought through 3 defenders and willed his way to the end zone. Tannehill added another 14 yards on 2 carries, and Damien Williams had 2 carries for 5 yards. Why bother listing all the carries and yards? I’ll tell you why! 32 carries and 180 yards rushing, with a nice 5.62 YPC is precisely what this offense has been missing. We’re not going to be able to 30 times a game, and we won’t always have success at over 5 yards a pop, but a commitment to staying with the run game will always make it easier on our offense.

Miami Dolphins running back Lamar Miller (26) at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida on December 28, 2014. (Allen Eyestone / The Palm Beach Post)

Just keep giving me the damn ball!

Ryan Tannehill wasn’t perfect, there were a few head scratching throws, especially a couple intended for TE Jordan Cameron. He did throw a beautiful deep ball right in stride to WR Kenny Stills down the left sideline. That was a pretty throw, but there’s no question that the threat of the run game makes throws like that happen. There HAS to be balance. In our first 4 games, we never had more than 20 carries, and only reached 20 carries once. We narrowly missed achieving half our season’s rushing total by a few yards. Before this past Sunday, we had 277 yards rushing on 65 attempts. We just missed getting almost half of our carries for the season by 1 carry. Ridiculous!

The defense wasn’t perfect either, but the pass rush finally came alive, proving that you have to be hungry to succeed. Shame that these high priced athletes can just turn the switch ON or OFF at will depending who is in charge, but clearly, that is the case. Of course Cam Wake’s hamstring injury was hampering him all year, but his switch was OFF with Joe Philbin in charge. He’s one guy that can make the defense go. Suh is a monster, but he has never been a guy that takes over a game. Cam Wake, on the other hand has, and can be that guy. When he’s in “relentless” mode, he’s hard to stop. When opposing offenses have to worry about Wake, all of a sudden, there are opportunities for everyone. Wake erupted for 4 sacks, and Olivier Vernon added one, and Jordan Kovacs well timed safety blitz added another. 6 sacks in one game, and we had just one sack all season. I can be angry with Joe Philbin as much as anyone, but it’s obvious these players weren’t trying. We didn’t change scheme as much as we changed philosophy. We went from going the motions to making plays and playing a brand of physical football I only hope we can continue playing. 6 sacks, 2 INT’s and 2 FF’s. Not too shabby.

cam-wake-scream

I am an ANIMAL!!!!!!!

This week we face a Texans team that we have struggled against historically. We’ve been in almost every game against them except for the most recent one in 2012, where we got blown out 30-10, otherwise we lost by a total of 7 points in the first 4 games. This year, the Texans are struggling as much as we were, at 2-4. Arian Foster has not been the Arian Foster previous to this year, and has played only 3 games, and is 3rd on the Texans with 104 yards. Alfred Blue leads the Texans with 226 yards on 57 carries. The Texans have flip-flopped QB’s this year with Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett. Hoyer has been the better QB statistically, completing 63.4% of his passes with 8 TD’s and 2 INT’s, while Mallett’s struggled, completing only 53.1% with 3 TD’s and 4 INT’s.

DeAndre Hopkins

I’m coming for you Piggy!

Brian Hoyer will start this week, against the Dolphins, and their renewed defense. Arian Foster will be starting at RB, and the very dangerous Samurai DeAndre Hopkins that a certain little Piggy knows very well brings his 52 receptions and 726 yards along with 5 TD’s. I believe Cecil Shorts III will be out for the Dolphins game, so veteran Nate Washington will get the start. This is the “Fest Game”, so hopefully the same that played last week shows up in Miami, so our boys and girls can have a little celebration after winning, and getting back to .500! I hope you all enjoy the Fest, win or lose, but hopefully, a WIN.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

And now for the babe of the week . . .

ugggg, the mets winning in a sweep. so boring. anyone that enjoys sports has to hate this series. would have been better watching paint dry then watching the mets vs cubs series.

I love sports Rob, and I loved this series! I think there are plenty of Mets, Cards, and Pirates fans that felt the same way.

  7. sb7mvp says:

I still don’t agree that the players weren’t trying. They were trying it Joe’s way and that obviously wasn’t working. They changed a bunch of things on offense and defense. No overhaul was needed but common sense changes were made that allowed the players to play to their strengths and put them into positions to succeed. No thinking about what they were doing just doing.

  8. jetsssuck says:

what was the question did I miss it?

  9. olddolphan says:

CONGRATS TO MIKE E for another really nice column. And congrats to every Met fan!! –I expect the well rested Mets will win the World Series!!
    ———-
Both our internet link and our telephone land lines were down over 12 hours following a big car crash on U.S. 41 which destrroyed a transformer. Neither are working right as of now, but they are working to SOME extent.

  10. New Age says:

Great article Mike E! Go Mets!!

I disagree with the players lack of effort belief. I really put almost all of this on the coaches. They are well paid to get the most out of players and to find ways to make them successful. Joe was a good guy but he didn’t have the best staff, which you need. He also was way too loyal in a game based on results. Sherman sucked. Coyle sucked. Lazor’s game plans sucked. You have to give honest assessments and move on if things aren’t working. He was way too stubborn.

Players aren’t Rhodes scholars and some basic fundamentals always work. Bring the heat on the QB(especially with high priced DLs). Run the ball. Have a solid OL. Don’t put too much on your QBs plate. Provide the balance you preach every week. Even Rex Ryan can admit he doesn’t always get it right.

Players need to see that their effort is providing results. Dont we all need that? They need to see their issues and complaints are being addressed. Don’t we all? They want to see the system is working or that it will be fixed. They want to succeed as badly as anyone. It’s their job, pride, and livelihood on the line. Did Coyle ever change except to make his ‘War and Peace’ too simple yet still rigid? Did Razor ever balance the offense until the Colonel arrived?

Ill finish with an apples to oranges comparison that I hope shows my point. A counselor for DHHR is expected to see 50 people a week. For whatever reason, she can only see 45(there are lots of reasons). She goes to her supervisor and says, “this isn’t working. Can I change out a few harder people? Lower my base? Something?” Her boss says she’s right and he’s going to help her out. He was going to give her 20 new people but now, she will just get 10, He’ll look into that other issue and thanks. Is that fixing the problem? Are you putting your guys in a position to succeed? Is your loyalty to a certain system or person providing success?

  11. jetsssuck says:

I think a lot of the problem is they don’t have quality depth to work with and injuries to key people. I rewatched the game again and the schemes were changed about the same amount as previous games. The only difference is the players played harder? I don’t think so. Maybe Wake made a difference? maybe. The previous games had players making plays? very possible, several games our players didn’t come down with ball when it was a 50/50 ball. The CB’s had several plays like this. Would have a better pass rush made a difference on these long developing plays? very possible.

  12. Rhino says:

Summary: blah, blah, 5.2 yards, blah, Joe…blah, BABE OF THE WEEK. 🙂 BOTW got this site blocked at work as “adult”. LOL

  13. Rhino says:

happy that Cespedes is going to the World Series. A’s fans are STILL bitching about that trade last July. For some reason nobody wants to pay him (A’s, Boston, Detroit)… will Mets pay him?

    • Mike E. says:

Most likely NO. I know they will offer him a “fair” contract of say 5 YRS/$130-140M, but he won’t take that, when he will probably get between $160-180M somewhere else.

  14. Mike E. says:

    Thanks guys! LET’S GO METS!

    • jetsssuck says:

how’s the buzz around town? Everyone has a happy face on? A little extra spring in their step? Who has the extra game at home in WS?

  16. sb7mvp says:

Where there is no vision the people perish. Also, does sanders = saunders?

  17. Mike E. says:

    jetssuck

I don’t live in NY, but there are a lot of happy people in NJ who are Mets fans. Either KC or Toronto will have the home field. It’s very exciting. I think it’s fair to say that Mets fans didn’t expect this, they have far exceded our expectations.

    • jetsssuck says:

your movie partner Tim lives in NY? It probably brought tears to his eyes or your shoulder huh?

      • Mike E. says:

Tim lives in Jersey too. Brian lives in NY, upstate, but Piggy is lone NYC dweller. He hates the Mets, so he’s not partaking in the celebration. I’ll tell ya, NYC bars are cleaning up with the Mets in the playoffs, and now the World Series.

  18. jetsssuck says:

i dropped off the kids this morning and the principle was directing traffic this morning and he had ny mets hat on

Those fckers don’t know how to drive. If the sidewaalk lane is open you have to use it instead of driving only 70.The slow traffic has gotta move over to the slow lanes

  19. Tim Knight says:

Good article Mike, but I really don’t care about the past with Philbin anymore as we are now 2-3 and Campbell ais our new HC coming off a big win. Let’s go get another one against the Texans.

Now for what’s really awesome, the Mets are going to the World Series. Yes!!!! Let’s go Mets!!!!

  20. Mike E. says:

    Tim

Did you get worried when Cespedes came out of the game?

    • Tim Knight says:

I missed it while I was talking to my friend and I said where is Cespedes, Lagares is up?

I heard that it was just a precaution being that we were up 3-0 in the series and 6-0 in the game. He’ll have 5 days off so he should be good to go.

  21. Mike E. says:

My nephew was pissed because Cespedes played golf earlier in the day, and then he has shoulder pain during the game. They did the right thing pulling him out, to be on the safe side. I’m sure he’ll be fine for the World Series, we need him to be.

  22. sb7mvp says:

This Houston game should tell us a bit about the rest of the season. It’s the type of game I wouldn’t feel confident about in the past and not bc we’ve never beat them. It’s a team that is built on running the ball and playing defense with a QB that is asked not to do much but no lose the game. The new England game will definitely tell us more, but I’ll feel better going into it having another convincing win.

One thing is receiving free tickets from the club you are employed for as an employee benefit and another is a for profit distribution system.

Finally, I have to keep changing up the list for not to get duplicate comment.
You would think everyone would want to play now that were good again.
    GO PHINS!!!

  68. Mike E. says:

I play every time, and we win some and we lose some, just about even.

  69. Mike E. says:

I’m hoping to one day actually nail the score, and a Miami Dolphins win too.

JUST GOT an email from Dolphins CEO Tom Garfinkel regarding the “NEW” parking arrangements at Sun-Baked Stadium. Bottom line is this: IF you are not among the first few thousand cars admitted to the Orange lot, you’ll be exiled to distant lots a long distance away from WHAT YOU PAID FOR IN ADVANCE (February) with your Orange Parking Pass. Garfinkel conveniently released this statement AFTER HOURS SO THAT SEASON TICKET HOLDERS COULD NOT REACH ANY TICKET REPS REGARDING CERTAIN DETAILS, SUCH AS:
    ——-
WHAT TIME DOES THE LOT OPEN ON SUNDAY?????? My ticket rep said 2 days ago the lots would open EARLIER than they did for the Buffalo game. But how much earlier????? He said the email we’d get Thursday night would answer that question. WELL, IT DIDN”T!!!
    ——
COUNT ON THINGS BEING FUCKED-UP ON SUNDAY. My guess, and that’s ALL I HAVE RIGHT NOW, is that the lots will open either at 9 AM (4 hours before kickoff) or 8 AM (5 hours before kickoff). Those who aren’t “IN LINE TO GET IN” REALLY EARLY (7 am) MAY END UP PARKING AT CALDER RACE TRACK, which will offer FREE PARKING for those who prepaid for the privilege of parking in the Orange Lot. BTW, Calder is a full mile or more from the entrance to the stadium.
    —–
MY SINCEREST THANKS TO Getter Done Phins (GDP) for listing all the articles on loyal ticket holders getting screwed by LYING Steve Ross!!! – – Read those articles and you’ll better understand why Ross is so despised by long term season ticket holders. And you’ll find out WHY none of us were even OFFERED season’s tix anywhere near where we used to sit. We were offered much inferior seating OUT IN THE SUN (even AFTER the canopy is completed) and told to “take it or leave it.”
    —–
IF I get more info on exactly what time the parking lots open, I’ll bring that info to D & B’s.

    • stangerx says:

OD — what specifically was in the e-mail that was new info. Word I got when I called was same rules as before and the problems should be taken care of.

I know they closed the two lots on the West side cause of the construction, but then the traffic for those wouldn’t come till way late anyhow

They told me gates open at nine like always.

      • olddolphan says:

MY email said nothing of the sort. I’ll bring you a copy!!

      • stangerx says:

Keep in mind that the only people parking in the Orange lot are you and me far as I know. I’m going to be there real early to set up the tailgate and at that time the place is like one-quarter full at most. So maybe I’m being selfish, but don’t see how whatever is going on could stop from setting up at like 9:30……even though I fully understand how it could become a real issue for people who come later on.

Could you forward the e-mail to me?

  71. Mike E. says:

Even though I know the Mets are in the World Series, I’m not sure it has really sunk in yet. It’s crazy how good this team is playing. They beat the badass Cubs from the monster NL Central Division by barely batting an eyelash. They made it look real easy, in retrospect.

  72. Rockphin says:

more like it than the can swallowers

  73. Tim Knight says:

Mike E, let’s hope the extra time off doesn’t cool the Mets off.

    • Mike E. says:

Yeah, that’s a concern. I think it can only help the pitchers, but as far as the hitters, Murph especially, it might not be so good.

  74. finfanrob says:

I am watching women’s college soccer (mia vs syracuse) and the commentator just said about one of the players that she is dangerous in and around the box.

Lmao, that’s probably why her teammates love her so much

‘MY SINCEREST THANKS TO Getter Done Phins (GDP) for listing all the articles on loyal ticket holders getting screwed by LYING Steve Ross!!!’

lol, i am sure ross over the summer had late night meetings with management. ross stands up and snickers ‘ahhhhhh haaaaaa, so how can we screw over our loyal ticket holders, i really want to put it to the backbone of our fan base. these fans showing up to the games is so annoying’

  76. Tim Knight says:

Harvey has to pitch game one. He’s had too many days off.

    Guess who is missing?

hmmmm, i wonder since it was tanny’s fault for all those sacks cause of his bad footwork and pocket presence does that mean he is now a better qb.

Struggling O-lines are a league wide issue.

nope, we have been told over and over on here that tanny cant move in the pocket of holds on to the ball to long. that the oline is fine it is tanny causing all the sacks. so if he isnt on that list it must mean he got better not the o line

    • Tim Knight says:

We saw what can be done when we establish the running game, get the OL and backs moving forward and then play-action passing both under center and shotgun. Keep it up!

      • bookman11 says:

        Tim,
When I saw Tannehill under center last week, I was thinking, I know one good time buddy that is loving that

  81. stangerx says:

OD wants you guys to know that his computer crashed and burned, so he won’t be able to post until he gets that fixed.

He also wants the the crew to know he will be there at D&B’s……….assuming ready to talk all the Ross you guys want. 🙂

These Matthew McGodI’mgay Lincoln commercials are going to cause me to slit my wrists.

  83. Tim Knight says:

Bookman, I was thrilled with more 2-TE sets and under center. We can’t always play on our heels, it’s not healthy. LOL

  84. bookman11 says:

It was really great to get Sims back…..he really makes a difference in the running game

I think so Jon, but I can’t remember who it was
Yes, quite a few times but damned if I can remember.
I do remember our first winner was Diggs and that didnt come till our 2nd season VS the Panthers.
Since then we get about one a season, sometimes two

Wow hurricane Patricia is a monster. 200+ mph winds. EI wall will be the equivalent of a 20 mile wide EF five tornado. It will be the strongest hurricane to ever hit land in human recorded history. Prayers go out to the people in Mexico

    • jetsssuck says:

every year for hurricane season I do something preparing for a hurricane. This year I poured 3 cement slabs for generators and placed white grease on the awning wing nuts. Next year I’m going to install aluminum shutters frames inside upstairs. Evey year, a little here and there, one can easily create a fort knox.
PS- don’t walk barefoot through wet grass when a generator is running. You don’t know if cord has a cut in it exposing wires. Home depot has cord stakes where it keeps the cords off the ground.

  90. ocalahowie says:

Well I dont know about Pacific Hurricanes but if that was here it would fizzle out after it went through the Bahamas on its approach to Florida
