Welcome to Ask Mike – 2015 Season Week 8

ASKMIKELogo

This past Sunday was the most enjoyable “Dolphins” Sunday in so long, I can’t even remember the last one that matched it. I felt like we had a chance to finally beat the Houston Texans, who we were previously 0-7 against. I felt the team had a renewed attitude, and that this might put them over the top. I picked the score of MIA 24 – HOU 6. Who would’ve thought they far exceeded that, and just in the first half!

For the Texans game, a bunch of people from our blog met up for the annual “Fest”, which has become a yearly tradition. I think it’s great, I’ve been to two, but every year I truly miss it when I can’t make it. Jon “Stanger”, is a huge reason for this. The first time I made my way to FLA with my family, Jon, Walker, Gigi, Son, Randy (OD), David, Cap’t Stubbs and Rob (FFR). As has now become the tradition, the whole crew goes out to Dave and Busters for dinner, and Jon always is very kind to provide for whoever chooses to make it there. Honestly, you couldn’t ask for a nicer, better “host”.  John (Son), has mentioned it, and so have some others, but Jon (Stanger), really goes out of his way for all those visiting either from far away in-state, or from even farther away out of state. Anyone who has attended knows this, and major props go out to Jon for doing that. The next time I went I got to meet a few other blog favorites, such as Bat, Diggs, Jahn, and also Ken and Jordi (Piggy), whom I’d already met a few times, but you get the point. If you can somehow make it to one, I highly recommend it, and I personally guarantee my attendance next year. Look forward to enjoying another weekend with some great folks, and meeting some people I haven’t yet met!

What a game our friends got to see! I just kept imagining what was going on with our friends who made it there this year, how crazy they must have been going, to witness total domination from our team, the Miami Dolphins. They played the best half of football I’ve ever witnessed by them, hands down. Ryan Tannehill was nearly perfect. The defense was ferocious and relentless. Jarvis Landry played like an All Pro WR/KR/PR FOOTBALL PLAYER. Landry is easily my favorite Miami Dolphin, he plays harder than any player IMO. Lamar Miller was fantastic, both rushing and receiving. Rishard Matthews continues to add to his resume, showing what many of us thought he could be, and making it happen. Reshad Jones continues his All Pro campaign, making tackles all over the field, and adding another pick-6. Suh gave us 6 tackles and 2 sacks. Cam Wake, healthy and rabid, gave us 2 sacks. Everyone just looked better. Thank you Dan Campbell, for stirring this team, and waking them up from their slumber. Forget the 2nd half, it was obviously Campbell not only taking his foot off the pedal, but putting it in PARK, and allowing our guys to rest, knowing we have a big game on Thursday night against the Patriots.

Speaking of Thursday night, this is a huge game against a division rival. Last weeks huge win served only to keep the season afloat, and energize the fan base. We need another massive effort from our team, in order to knock off the favored New England Patriots, in their house, Gillette Stadium in Foxboro. The 6-0 Patriots will likely be allowed to hold Wake, and now likely Suh too, so we’ll need some of the other guys to step up. The Patriots have scored the most points in the AFC, with 213, and are 2nd in the nFL to the Arizona Cardinals, who score a lot of points with their defense. This is a daunting task, and at 3-3, and 0-2 in the division, almost a sure necessity, if we plan on contending this season. Brice McCain, who will be the starter if healthy, is questionable to start opposite Brent Grimes right now. If McCain can’t go, Jamar Taylor will start. That would leave young Bobby McCain as the nickel corner. This is big. The Patriots employ those super-quick, pesky WR’s like Julian Edelman, who BTW made Wes Welker expendable. Danny Amendola, finally healthy, is having a good season. Of course, Tom Brady’s favorite target is big #87, Rob Gronkowski.

I won’t be shocked if we if we see a big dose of RB LeGarrette Blount, and also a good amount of  RB Dion Lewis out of the backfield, who will be a game-time decision for the Patriots with an abdominal injury. We need to tackle, and that means Blount, Lewis, but more importantly, Edelman, Amendola, and Gronkowski. The greater majority of passes that Edelman and Amendola catch are only about 5-10 yards past the LOS, so we need to be right on those guys as soon as they catch it, and hopefully, not let them catch it.

Big task for new Head Coach Dan Campbell, to go up against Bill Belichick. All the odds are against us, but I think we may just see a big upset. I don’t expect us to do to the Patriots what we did to the Titans and especially the Texans, but I think we do enough to win this week, with a last minute FG to win 30-28. GO DOLPHINS!!!

And now for the babe of the week . . .

Enjoyable read as usghe Mike. Agree, this is a pivotal game for our season – a season I had written off as I thought Philbin would not be removed until season’s end. If we manage to get the better of NE in Foxboro, I would say we should fear no one. If we don’t, the play-offs are going to be a massive reach. So not much at stake then? I just hope we haven’t “come off the boil” and started believing all the good press. I like us better in “proving it” mode. I have a lot more confidence in Dan getting us prepared for this than Joe!
    Go Fins.

Piggy mentioned NE is gonna want to establish some kind of running game and I thought for a second after watching all NE’s games and they have a set where they use 4 TE’s in game. If we bring in extra LB’s they spread the TE’s outside, if we bring in CB’s to cover the TE’s they bring the TE’s in to block for running. Once the OL is set I expect Suh to move along the DL to create confusion of the inexperienced NE OL right side.
The fins had 4 TE’s on practice squad and regular squad last week.My guess is they were preparing for this set that NE uses.

The Pats recently traded for another big TE. This article explains how using a 4 TE package creates mismatches. This is the only way I can see them running on us unless they give us misdirection plays because we are to aggressive and not disciplined.

Could we be exploring using the 4 TE set. We recently got back Syms and our reserve TE’s got some playing experience while we had injuries. Our OC knows stuff from his coaching days with Philly and we have a smart QB. We should find out when they announce the inactives for the game. Maybe our DT Mitchell gets a pass thrown to him from the FB position tonight.

I’ll say this about Stanger, when we went to the Jets game a couple of years ago Stanger out of nowhere taps me on the shoulder in the stands and hands me a beer and some food he went and bought from the concession stand. He thinks about others and is a genuine good dude. Simple as that.

Nice job mike. I won’t put too much stock in this game. This is a game that we mostly thought would be loss at the beginning of the season.

I just hope its not a blow out like the experts think will be. Keep it competitive and I’ll be happy.

I think we really have a shot in this game, and honestly, I feel much better with Campbell than I do with Philbin

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not sure why anyone would expect a blowout. The Dolphins are playing well, are newly inspired and it’s an important game for them. I’d be shocked if we played poorly. Could we lose, sure, the Pats are really tough to beat in NE, but it should be a competitive game.

      • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

that’s what I hope. If we don’t have our usual 2nd half meltdown, like we always do up in NE, we have a shot.

And too much credit anyhow. Only the last two years for me really, the first two years were mostly Gigi.

Plus as JS mentioned — I and we are just lucky that Warren likes playing chef (and at food cost). Overall he probably put as much time into last weekend as I did.

I tend to think it will be a competitive game
We’ve matched up well against the pet riots the last few years and I think we match up well this year

    How physical can we be?
That’s the key issue to me

It would be nice to leave the patriots with some bumps and bruises no matter the result

  22. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Thanks for posting the Campbell article, UK. Awesome read. I believe in Campbell, and I think we’re going to give the Pets all they can handle this week. We may not win, but we’re going to give them a hell of a fight.

Take credit for what is deserved. And come to next year’s Fest and you might see why Warren deserves more. This year he popped out those slow smoked prime rib sandwiches with horseradish sauce, home smocked king mackeral fish dip (South Florida feel), his special guacomole, pasta salad with some kind of vegiies, and a heaping bowl of shrimp mix (assuming his favorite dill cream sauce but he might have tried something new).

  34. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

I think some are expecting a blow out because they feel the Pats would have blown out the Jets if they hadn’t dropped 11 passes. Coming off a game where so many dropped passes occured; I guess many are expecting to see crisp execution this week. However, many are downplaying the Fins-Pats rivalry. It’s been filled with a bunch of up and down games.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

First off the Jets are overrated. They’ve beaten the Browns, Colts, Redskins and us when we were playing like a bad team. They were begging for us to steal the game from them but we couldn’t oblige. Beat the Pats tonight and we’re right there in the mix.

  35. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

People are also probably thinking Miami in general is a poor cold weather team. Since Sparano days; I think we have seen this is not true.

‘Because it’s the Patriots and they are godlike…lol’

yep. even today on the local sports talk show ian beckles says the pats can play bad and still beat you by 10 points. he didnt elaborate but i will

now how does that happen, 10 points is a pretty big margin. so how can a team that pretty much has constant turnover ever year play bad but still win by 10 points. and i get he didnt mean win by 10 just that they can play bad and still pretty much walk away with an easy win. just seems super fucking odd to me that in a league that teams try to have a consistent roster that one that is a constant turnover always walks away assured of wins

  40. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

if we don’t stop the pats rush attack it’ll get ugly as it usually does when they run it down our throats. The only reason the jets were in that game was they stopped their rush and were able to run on them.

The Pats didn’t have RB Dion Lewis for the Jets game but he’s going to be active vs Miami (announced today he is ready to play).

As for the Jets, from the article I posted yesterday, it seemed the effectiveness of the Jets D came from the blitz.

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2582992-have-the-new-york-jets-found-a-blueprint-for-beating-the-patriots

“Thanks to Ryan Fitzpatrick’s efficient play at quarterback, the Jets did a great job of playing keep-away from the Patriots in the first half by possessing the ball and converting third downs. That being said, that strategy wouldn’t have worked without help from a stalwart defensive effort.

The Jets took an interesting path to get there. According to Pro Football Focus, the Jets blitzed Tom Brady on 28 of his 60 dropbacks (46.7 percent), far above what we’ve come to expect against Brady. Initially, the plan worked. Brady completed just 20 of his first 37 passes for 205 yards in the first three quarters before rattling off 14 completions on his next 17 throws for 150 yards and two touchdowns.

It wasn’t because the Jets blitzed or didn’t blitz that they had success, though. It’s because they mixed it up. By keeping the Patriots guessing, and by confusing the offensive linemen (many of whom are inexperienced), the Jets were able to keep the Patriots out of rhythm on offense. “

Every year when the schedule comes out the franchises circles the most meaningful game and usually its the biggest game against the previous division champion. If a team can beat them then they consider themselves improving from the previous year. Believe me preparation for this game started the day schedules were announced. Players shouldn’t need any motivation for games like these. The organization can see the Patriots have wrinkles in their armor and the battle for that castle is even. This might be a thriller like a 15 round boxing match. This organization is tired of one franchise dominating the division 15 of 16 years. When we were down with injuries we didn’t make excuses. J. Gray didn’t quit when he was cut by Patriots. The Pats OL injuries creates opportunities for us to take back the castle. I can hear the bag pipes playing softly and they are getting louder as the game gets closer. No motivation needed for this one this is a franchise turning opportunity. Remember the KC Chiefs xmas day game.

No, Gurley and Bernard are in my lineup.
    —————
I keep reading and hearing about Gurley and how bad-ass he is. I even read one guy call him the best back in the NFL just 6 games into his career.

I haven’t watched him play at all yet. Anybody here watch him play. Is he really that good or is he over-hyped?

  82. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

    tim,
it doesn’t matter what lewis’s role is. Belicheat usually beats us up there by running the ball on us in the 2nd half. And I bet, unless we have a large lead, he’ll try and do the same to us tonight.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Oh I agree. He wants to go with Blount 4th quarter. It’s the Phins job to snuff that out. 🙂

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think he tries to run on us too
I would – its hard to believe what happened in Sept to us when people ran at will is just over like that
      but maybe its been corrected
I think belicheat at a minimum wants to exploit a running game like teams did early int he year

this is why you have to be physical with the pats receivers at the LOS to rattle brady.

    http://a4.espncdn.com/combiner/i?img=%2Fphoto%2F2015%2F1029%2FTime_Before_Pass.jpg&w=570

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Gotta be on their receivers like white on rice, no cushion for these guys. Guys on the D-line need to get their hands in Brady’s face too.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If you have noticed we’ve played man on the strong side and 5-6 off on the weak side all year. This 10-12 yards off the ball stuff is a fallacy. When we do play off like that it’s just to diagnose the play and they’re at 5 in a second.

Our defensive scheme is a common one and based on your talent you can do certain things. But what we do is keep everything in front of us, don’t let them get behind you and make big plays. It all starts up front with pressure in the backfield. We didn’t do that the first 4 games, we have the last 2.

      • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

2.1 seconds is pretty fast. one Mississippi two Mississippi boom.

  85. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Boulder,
I don’t expect the Pats to outplay Miami.
I expect Tom Brady to bitch to refrees and bullshit PI calls to decide the outcome in favor of NE

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

that’s what happened 2 years ago with the batted ball call. WE had that game until that call. That is exactly why its tough to beat the pats in NE. Because you have to beat them and the refs. tough task for sure.

Q – how much does it mean to you to have fan support across the country?

“It means a lot. I’ve seen it a lot. It shows us – and especially the new players who come (to the Dolphins) – that wherever we go, we have love everywhere. You have to be ready, embrace their presence and feed off of it.

  88. drg's avatar drg says:

Hoping for a good showing tonight, win or lose. We need to keep momentum going and pick up a couple wins over the next three somehow. A win would be a pretty huge accomplishment. I’m afraid our coaching inexperience might catch up to us tonight. Make sure our hand signals are ready, bring the debugging equipment for the locker room, check the balls, signal blockers, radar jam, etc…

  89. drg's avatar drg says:

And if any of our guys injures Brady and knocks him out for the season I will buy ten of his jerseys tonight.

  90. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Boulder,
Easier said than done, however, if I’m the Fins coaches, I am taking away Edleman at all costs and to a certain extent Gronk and daring everyone else to beat the Fins.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I remember 2 years ago in the playoffs the ravens did exactly that. They played really physical with their receivers and beat them up in NE. You have to bring the wood when you tackle these guys. They get rattled.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Hard to do both. If you leave open someone else they just go there and it’s their night. The Pats work like that, they don’t rely on anyone but Brady delivering the ball.

That said, I do agree we should cloud both of those guys often and hit the shit out of them when they get it. Jones and Aiken on Gronk, and Grimes, Taylor and Bo. McCain on Edelfuck. LOL

  92. drg's avatar drg says:

    Tim, Mike E,

Really surprised how good Cueto was last night. Seems like the youth of the Mets rotation is showing a bit and their defense has really hurt them so far this series. Still think this series is far from over. I love this KC team. So many guys that are fun to root for.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed, the young guns are a bit fatigued and the Mets bats have been quiet. The Royals are an excellent baseball team too.

We’ll see at Citi Field. The Mets need a win to get it to 2-1. It’s not game 4 yet. LOL

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That KC lineup really wears you out. All those nasty pitches that LA and CHI swung and missed, these guys either foul them off, or hit them where someone ain’t. They’ll cool off eventually, hopefully tomorrow night.

  93. drg's avatar drg says:

    Cav,

He’s due for a Theisman-esque injury soon. Karma.

  94. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Pros and Cons:
Royals – contact hitting team, great defense and experience – two WS in a row is impressive.
Mets – power pitching and hitting – it’s not there right now.

  95. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    drg

It’s really tough on a pitcher, when you feel like you can’t get anyone out. It’s very disheartening and also very stressful

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

that what it seemed like in the 5th inning last night for degrom

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yep! The Mets bats’ are not complying. It’s not a one man show and the Mets playoff run was not about one guy excluding Murphy’s incredible run. It was a team effort. Some of these guys including the Captain David Wright have to step up. Where is Cespedes?
