The State of The Hulk

incredible-hulk

By Dr. Bruce Banner

So last week Hulk watch President give State of the Union Address and Hulk reminded that Constitution make President every year have to go tell congress what the state of the union is. So Hulk think maybe every year after season over Hulk should tell you what is the state of the Phins. So Hulk now tell you.

Ladies, gentlemen, and Fin Fan Rob, the state of our Phins is not good. Hulk know that many of you think that some quick fixes in this off season and that this team can compete next year. While Hulk knows anything possible Hulk here to tell you that competing next year is not likely. There are deep flaws in this team that are not likely to be corrected in one off season. Let’s start on offense.

Is four scores and seven points so damn hard to get? The offense average less than 20 points a game. That no going to work in today’s NFL. There must be more productivity at just about every position.

Hulk look at QB and remember that a house divided cannot stand. There is no more divisive figure to Phin fans than Ryan Tannehill. We hold these truths to be self evident: That he has passed for over 4,000 yards, completed over 60% of his passes and has had a 2-1 or better TD to interception ratio for two consecutive years. We also hold these truths to be self evident: That he seems to play his worst ball when the game is on the line in the 4th quarter and has failed to deliver against divisional foes more often than not. So Hulk and Phin fans everywhere wonder do we have a QB? Hulk still believe Tannehill can be franchise QB and even though Tannehill did not take the big jump forward that many expected this year he did show good deep ball this year, especially late in year to Parker. This next season is very important for Tannehill’s, Gase’s and Phins’ future. If Tannehill no progress then retooling project might just become an all out rebuilding project.

Now running back is an area where Phins got good production but Hulk foresees trouble next year. Under utilized Lamar Miller is going to be a free agent. He has shown enough productivity over the last 2 years that it is likely someone will come bidding for his services and that someone is likely a contending team such as Indianapolis or Dallas who both need a running back. So Hulk not counting on Miller being back. That leaves Jay Ajayai who flashed in limited opportunities but he have history of injury and behind him there is little depth. Hulk think running back once again become position of need.

Then there is the offensive line which is doing it’s best impersonation of the Maginot line which the Germans went right around with ease in 1940. Branden Albert is physically ailing and does not look like the player he was 2 years ago. He cannot be counted on for 16 games. Jawuan James followed up a promising rookie season with an injury plagued 2015 that saw him miss most of the season. That left Jason Fox as the defacto starting RT and the results were miserable. Fox is at best a single game alternative as a backup and not a guy who can be counted on for multiple starts. But as bad as the tackle play was this year the interior line play was worse. Hulk think it time to acknowledge the Dallas Thomas experiment is over. He just no good. Jamal Douglas won the other starting guard spot but lost it just as quickly as he won it. Billy Turner took over at guard and showed skill at run blocking which is unfortunately only half of the game and unfortunately in the case of the Phins more like a 1/3 of the game. So the offensive line remains a major weakness for the Phins.

Hulk happy to report that one area of offensive has positive news. The WR position has been turned from a deficit into a surplus. Jarvis Landry has set both team and league records over his first 2 years in the league and while not a burner he is an outstanding route runner and always seems to make the first defender miss and picks up good yards after the catch. Devante Parker overcame an injury plagued start to his rookie season and really flashed ability over the last several games. He has inconsistent habits in terms of effort and route running but you can see an exceptional skill set. He can get open deep, he can fight for the contested ball and he can run after the catch. He and Landry can become the cornerstone of a stud WR tandem for years to come. Kenny Stills provides a good #3 WR who has good speed and flashed the ability to get open deep. Rishard Matthews was very productive early then started to fade before getting injured. He is a free agent and likely not to be re-signed. Hulk think that we may want to pick up another WR for depth.

TE, all Hulk have to say is ugh! The state of the Phins is not good at TE. Cameron looked lost and failed to have significant impact in red zone as expected. Dion Sims seemed to have regressed as a receiver. He have some notable drops, in particular in game against Giants where he was miserable. Hulk think Phins need to get better TEs.

Hulk now turn to Department of Defense where despite massive spending the level of performance reached a new low. Phins spend lots of money for Suh who although he play okay he no worth what Phins pay him. Now Phins are burdened with his contract for the next several years and that may impair ability of Phins to sign other free agents. Suh was supposed to take up double teams so as to allow other players to make plays. Suh did that but no other players step up. Suh also had numerous off sides penalties. Earl Mitchell also seemed to lack in making impact plays. Again if Suh is getting double teamed Mitchell should be making more plays than he did. Jordan Phillips flashed promise as a rookie showing ability to generate inside pressure and a good knack for getting his hands up so as to bat down a number of passes.

At defensive end Hulk think we may have seen last of Cam Wake. He tore Achilles tendon and his recovery at his age is uncertain. Also his contract may be too large for someone with declining skills. Then we have Olivier Late & Low Vernon. Yes Vernon show ability to generate pass rush but he also have way too many personal fouls for late and low hits on QBs. Hulk not sure his sack yardage out gains his penalty yardage. Vernon is a free agent and Hulk has heard some pundits say the Phins will franchise Vernon. That would make Hulk very angry to tie up so much money into a DE who has produced middle of the road statistics. Hulk think DE is a position of need in this draft and free agency. This especially so when you consider the once promising career of Terrance Fede who went from being unblockable during training camp to being inactive over the last several games of the season. So the state of the DEs is not good.

If the state of the DEs is not good then the state of the LBs verges on abysmal. Only Jelani Jenkins is of NFL starting caliber and his play last season was not up to the level it was the year before. Koa Misi is best suited as role player and not as a starting LB. He just lacks the quickness necessary to play the position. At MLB Sheppard look lost at times. He has the physical skills but not the instincts for the position. This may be the greatest area of need on the team.

In the defensive backfield Reshad Jones is the only impact player we have. Jones had an excellent season and Hulk very angry that Jones no go to pro bowl. Hulk also very angry that rest of defensive backfield still on Phins roster. Brent Grimes while still has a knack for the interception but any WR with a modicum of speed can get behind Grimes. Jamar Taylor can now officially be labeled a bust. Of all the other CBs only Lippett flashed some potential late in the season but he remains very raw and largely untested. CB is a major area of need.

Finally there are the special teams. Matt Darr seems to have filled the large shoes of his predecessor. Andrew Franks has simply not kicked enough field goals to be properly evaluated. He shows a good leg but Hulk no trust him just yet. Landry is an outstanding punt returner but Hulk prefer he no return punts because he so good as a WR. Hulk think Phins need an upgrade at KR.

So there you have Hulk’s state of the Phins position by position analysis. The bottom line is Hulk see too many areas of need, OL, TE, DE, LB and DB for a quick turnaround. Hulk predicts he be very, very angry again next year. And remember vote early and vote often.

It’s all about Tannehill, if he can become a clutch QB, then we’ll make the playoffs next yr, if not it will be the same ole…It won’t get done by himself though, Gase will have a lot to do with it.

  6. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike E, the Mets are a powerhouse right now. Coming off of a WS loss sucked. But the 2016 team could be dominant. Go Phins!!! LOL

Cespedes came from the other league are tore it up for the Mets, but that’s not who he’s been in his career, he got hot and the pitchers hadn’t seen much of him, but that pitching staff…

  8. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

BIG signing for the Mets last night, despite Steve’s negativity about it! Of course Cespedes isn’t going to be as hot as he was when he first got here, but just as important as his bat is the protection he will provide the rest of the lineup. Im glad someone in the Mets organization realized that we needed to sign a big FA, and I’m also glad that Cespedes was willing to stick around for at least another year with bigger offers on the table.

It’s so damn exciting man. I woke up in a great mood, knowing the Mets will be for real this season again. They didn’t drop the ball, they put their balls on the table and signed the bat they needed. What a difference from years past! LET’S GO METS!!!

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Exactly. I was so pissed off when the weren’t looking hard at some of the FA available. I was thinking “Great, we have this incredible pitching staff that will only be together for so long, and we aren’t even going to try to acquire and big bats to help them out”.

  12. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Steve

Cespedes doesn’t have to be as good as he was in the 2nd half. He gives the lineup so much more length, and everyone around him sees better pitches. That’s a big way he transformed the team, it wasn’t just his performance, he upgraded everyone else in the lineup.

  13. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Bri

I was thinking they were going to trade a pitcher to get a bat, and that still may happen at some point in the next couple of years. No way we keep all of that pitching, it’s incredible, Harvey, deGrom, Syndergaard, Matz, Wheeler, Monteiro . . . Can’t keep all of them. It’s hard to keep 3 big pitchers, let alone 5.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Yup. I wish the owners weren’t in such dire financial straits right now. I would have loved to see Mark Cuban make a play for the team. Ownership is too stubborn to give up the team though, even if it doesn’t have the means to back the team financially right now. I’d like to see them keep Degromm and Syndergaard long term though.

I recall you doing a scouting report on Jalen Ramsey before the season began. I remember being impressed with him and saying something to the effect of “I really like him, but we won’t be picking nearly that high in the draft next year so we won’t have a chance to draft him”.

  15. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

    PFF OL Rankings for 2015:
    https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2016/01/20/pro-ranking-all-32-offensive-lines-this-season/

    31. Miami Dolphins (32nd)
    Pass-blocking rank: 29th

    Run-blocking rank: 32nd

    Penalties rank: 25th

Stud: While Mike Pouncey is the best of this bunch, he didn’t even need to have anything close to his best year to be the stud here.

Dud: Is it time to call an end to the Dallas Thomas experiment? He graded worse in 2015 than he did in 2014, and struggled whenever faced with semi-decent opposition.

Summary: On the plus side, they moved up a spot. But that was due more to the Chargers being that bad, rather than Miami getting better. Given how much money and how many high draft picks the team has spent, it has to be considered a monumental failure that they produce as badly as they do.

    32. San Diego Chargers (29th)
    Pass-blocking rank: 32nd

    Run-blocking rank: 31st

    Penalties rank: 29th

Stud: Joe Barksdale, and it wasn’t close.

Dud: The seven lowest grades on offense belonged to linemen. None more so than Trevor Robinson, who had the lowest grade of any lineman in the league.

Summary: Just terrible. Injuries hurt them to the point they had 12 players take snaps on the line, and nine feature for more than 100 snaps. That kind of lack in continuity is a killer, but still doesn’t explain how bad this group was. Big-money signing Orlando Franklin didn’t produce, and former first-rounder, D.J. Fluker, is not impressing. They just haven’t got it right on the line and it shows each and every game.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Run-blocking rank: 32nd? I thought they were actually pretty good at it when we attempted to run the ball.

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I thought the samething…the low ranking must be because of the few attempts.

I sure hope we find a way to keep Miller. I like Ajayi, but we can’t put all the eggs in his basket.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Combine those bad OL numbers with the fact that the Phins were near 32nd in stopping the run & you get a sense why this team was not able to win games.
Losing the war on both sides of the trenches is never going to get you far in the NFL.

  47. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

GD, we will either re-sign Miller or sign a low tier vet and draft a back 3rd rd on.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Right, but I rather keep the proven player that’s still very young. Even if it costs more than usual. We’ve overspent on other players before with less results.

If I’m Tbomb/Grier, I find a way to make it work. If I’m Gase, I’m demanding that they keep him! 😉

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed. Someone posted a FA contract projection and Miller was in the 4 year $18-20M range. I’d do that in a heartbeat, he’s earned it. He’s our most explosive player. 241 touches for 1,269 yards and 10 TDs – 8 Rush and 2 Rec. Big explosive plays as well.

The NFL and social media fucked us on Incognito. Ireland had nothing to do with letting Incognito go, he was fired at the end of the season. We couldn’t retain him for PR reasons.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I agree on the golf club. That was the one that really got me. But if you are going to kick off all the lunatics off your squad you can’t field an NFL team.

    Sorry Mets baseball talk. 🙂

This is a potential Mets lineup on any given day. If they stay relatively healthy and who knows, with their pitching staff, it would be hard to imagine them not winning at least 95 games.

    (Numbers are HRs)
    1. RF Granderson (L) 25+
    2. 3B Wright (R) 15+
    3. LF Conforto (L) 20+
    4. CF Cespedes (R) 25+
    5. 1B Duda (L) 25+
    6. 2B Walker (S) 15+
    7. CT d’Arnaud (R) 15+
    8. SS Cabrera (S) 15+

    Bench:
    CT Plawecki (R) 5+

    IF Flores (R) 10+
    IF Tejada (R) 1-3
    IF Herrara (R) 3-5

    OF De Aza (L) 3-5

It’s a little bit techy, but there are some good instructions online (i’m not a techy, so if I can do it anyone with some tech knowledge can manage it). You basically enable your fire stick to be accessed by your computer through the wireless network, and install kodi onto the firestick. Once you have Kodi, you can load up all sorts of add-ons including sportsdevil. So far it looks fantastic to me. I’m loading up watchseries now to see if that works too(which lets me watch all tv programs).

  66. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    GD, what condescending remark?

I admit I’m cocky about the Mets. If there is no real bad stuff that happens to the pitching staff this is a 95-100 win team. Cespedes wanted to stay here because he knows playoffs and excitement will be here. 🙂

Two teams won more than 95 last year in all of MLB……..and one of them was not the Pirates. How many did you predict the Dolphins to win last offseason?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The Mets had two young stud pitchers in Harvey and deGrom and half of their lineup was Triple A talent to start last season.

This year it’s four young stud pitchers in Harvey, deGrom, Syndergaard and Matz.

Not only did this team taste a Championship title, they competed for it. They now know what it takes. 90 wins last year with that team, I can easily see 97-100 wins this year.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I can see that too. Was just pointing out the odds are against it. Understand why you are excited about the signing though. I’d take the Mets over the Pirates right now…….would still bet you they don’t win 97 or more though. That would be a suckers bet. There are 32 teams and one breaks a 100 every three years or something.

The guy sitting in front of me at the Chargers game was a Dolphins fan from Palm Springs, I had been talking to him for much of the first half when I heard him tell his cousin next to him, he was a Dodgers fan. I said I bet we like all the same teams, and sure enough we did, he was pretty surprised, he’d never met anyone that likes those 4 teams as their favorites in each sport.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Wow, way to go out on a limb there Timmy. The regular lineup by itself isn’t much better than average, it’s the pitching staff that makes the Mets the NL favorites.

  70. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim is probably a little more confident than I am with the Mets. I totally understand his logic though, because the lineups we were trotting out there in the first half of the season in ’15 were a joke. It wasn’t just Cespedes that turned the team around in the 2nd half, it was having a lineup full of major league talent when we acquired Kelly Johnson and Jose Uribe from the Braves, and then brought up Michael Conforto from the minors, and David Wright became healthy enough to play. That all came together at the same time, and it made a huge difference in the run production. Now with the acquisition of Cespedes and Neil Walker, we can put out a quality lineup almost every day, and that added to the starting pitching talent we have should bring us a very good season.

I’d never heard of Gase before the season ended, but after listening to him and the write ups about him I can easily see him as being the next great young coach. It’s the creativity, dedication, and understanding in general of how to run an offense that does it for me. It may take him a while to get things going, but once he does…Either that or someone is doing a great smoke job on us.

And your call on that could have been exactly right at the time, even if you are talking to a guy who has a “Peyton to Miami” T-shirt. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the Raiders could move to San Diego for the 2017 or 2018 season.
Schefter’s source called the potential move “very viable.” The Raiders-to-San Diego possibility was first reported two weeks ago by ESPN’s John Clayton following a private discussion with Raiders owner Mark Davis. The Chargers are fully expected to join the Rams in Inglewood (CA), creating room for the Raiders in San Diego. Even after missing out on Los Angeles, Davis seems dead set on leaving Oakland. The Raiders have also been linked to San Antonio, but San Diego is a more realistic relocation option.
