The Wedge Scouting Report: Mackensie Alexander, CB

Wedge here for Toots SuperGlue!

Ever had one of those days?

Nothing can withstand the gravitational forces you pass through.

Everything comes to pieces!

Well that’s when you need your Toots SuperGlue!

TOOTSGLUEAD

TOOTS is the Glue you can rely on like superstar cornerback Mackensie Alexander.

Just apply a little bit of Toots Superglue to you broken Photon Belt or your best Wide Receiver and like Magic you are back in space again or pitching a shutout on the football field.

Toots and Alexander are airtight and won’t let anything come between them and the receiver, including bombs!

MackensieAlexander5

Alexander was one of the most highly ranked high school prospects coming out of high school.  He was talented then, he is talented now.

Toots won Space Ship Saver of the year last millennium.  And it still saves Space Ships!

Some think Alexander will be the first cornerback taken in the draft!  Some also think Toots will glue a moon to a planet!

Before the combine Alexander declared to the NFL “I am the best cornerback in the draft”…cocky, you bet!  True….maybe!

Cornerbacks need to be confident, and Mackensie certainly is.

And I am confident Toots will permanently glue anything it touches!

NCAA FOOTBALL: SEP 12 Appalachian State at Clemson

Guess how many interceptions Alexander had at Clemson…

The answer is ZERO.  Guess why?

Yep, you guessed it, no one dared to throw the ball near him.

Like Toots Superglue which never breaks down.  Toots is permanent and not safe for your kids to play with.

Alexander is true shutdown defensive back.  And Toots will kill your pets if they eat it!

MackensieAlexander4

Alexander is yet another prospect with Florida roots, hailing from Immokalee Florida.

I don’t know where that is but its probably full of football fields.

Toots, on the other hands, is harnessed out of the semen of dead lifeforms!

At the combine Alexander didn’t run the 40 but or really any drills at all except the bench where he benched 225 pounds 11 times.

At the Saturn New Products Fair, Toots glued an alien’s tentacles to his own pancreas 11 times!

FBC: Russell Atheletic Bowl: Clemson vs. Oklahoma

Let’s face it, if you are an NFL Team you need a Mackenzie Alexander on your roster.

And if you are an intergalactic agent, you need Toots SuperGlue in your spaceship!

Get your Toots SuperGlue now…look for the sexy alien on the label.

StickTootsGlue

Oh…and one more thing now you can get new MAX Toots SuperGlue.

Speaking of which…if Mackensie Alexander was an Alien Weapon of Destruction, he would be a bottle of MAX Toots SuperGlue!

I think you mean to make the nominee automatic and not place it in the hands of the party

Good that’s all I care about
      Let’s hope its true

I’ve heard 100 rumors about it by now

The 4th rounder might be that attacking LB I want

trading back in the first is not so bad
unless Jack or Ramsey fall to #8
then we missed a shot at a good player

you have to expect that between 8 and 13 that guys like Ragland, Lee, Lawson, Stanley, Alexander or Hargreaves might come off the board too –

So we might miss another good fit for us
but generally – I expect a good player we can use at 13

      and I don’t think that’s a bad deal

but the 4th rounder matters! lol

  14. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

This Mario vs. OV because of age convo that’s out there is sully. Mario is a better player than OV, end of debate. I don’t care if OV is 22, is not an elite player and Mario has been.

I read a story that talks about how a team signing OV to a big deal could be a bust. Why? Because when looking at OV’s game tape, he rarely creates the sack himself, he gets it as a result of an overall pass rush or on a blitz. Something Randy has said many times and I agree with.

  15. D's avatar D says:

I find very few scenarios where keeping Wake makes any sense, unless you are just wanting to make sure you have an adequate answer for Vernon first. This could mean Wake stays util after draft or until we make another move in FA.

Only scenario i could come up with that makes any sense would be use Williams and Wake in tandem to extend the football life of both, however that means you now have approximately 18mil tied up at LDE. To think, well they can just move one of them to the RDE spot i think is asking for disappointment. Thes guy are career LDE’s they occasionally will rotate or maybe flip sides but its rare. To expect that same production flipped to the other side is going to end with us bitching about either keeping Wake or signing Williams.

We save 8.4 mil cutting Wake, which would put us in the black for the Williams deal on its own, i think we really need to consider the 8.4 mil as being a potential OG plus some, or a top other prospect, etc. Keeping Wake with as much question as there is surrounding his recovery and ability to play a different side, etc. just makes so little sense to me.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mario has lined up on both sides even though yes he’s been mainly a LDE since he was drafted.

      • D's avatar D says:

They all have lined up on both sides Tim, his sacks come lined up as a LDE, i would expect being primarily on the RDE spot to see a drop off in production. I think they are just holding on to Wake until they have a better option for RDE

  19. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

  32. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

The Giants will be a better defense with OV and Jenkins

So IMO those will be good free agent moves for them

    Free agency does work
It’s just a question about making the right moves IMO

They probably will overpay for those 2 players
    But that is free agency
    Gotta draft well too

  33. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    D

I tend to think either Wake or Willains can play on either side

Willains has experience doing it before

Wake was successful as a 3-4 a OLB and 4-3 DE
So he has proven to be versatile

$ is the big question in terms of keeping Wake

In terms of money Wake will probably end up being a better option than OV

In terms of talent I think Wake is far superior to OV as well

In terms of health and age I think OV has the edge

But to me – playing on the right side is a nonfactor

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think DeMarcus Ware went from left side to right side last season
And he had 7.5 sacks for the Broncos and a very good post season

Double check on him switching from left to right
      I didn’t look it up
      I’m assuming

But I think the primary difference is you are facing a LT instead of a RT
So there is a talent jump on the other side

Other than that – is there really a huge difference
I guess one doesn’t play next to Suh either

  34. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So our LB situation at this time looks like this.
    SOLB Misi, Hewitt
    MLB Alonso, Misi, Vigil
    WOLB Alonso, Jenkins, Hewitt

What LB would you add from the draft not named Jack because we’re not getting him. I think if we’re picking #13 I’d go with Ragland. Alonso, Jenkins and Hewitt are leaner type LBs, Ragland would give us a bigger more stout LB like Misi. We’d have a lot of options with these guys and could rotate them and we’d have some depth.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      Yuk at the current situation

My answer is I would add a guy named Myles…lol

      Ragland works
You know he would play MLB
And just let the competition play out at OLB

Brothers and Matakavich also fit that mold

I like the attacking LBs behind our DL though
Darron Lee, Dion Jones & Scooby Doo

Maybe a Late round flyer on Jaylon Smith

There are plenty of LBs in the draft that can compete for a starting job with that group
That group as health consideration and are not all pro players
So I would say nothing is locked up for any of them

I really think those udfa from a year ago should not be relied on – even as depth

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

How is that yuk? I think you’re underrating that group and overrating the LBs in the draft.

  37. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Really excited about the latest rumor on the Eagles trade being just a 1st rd swap & no loss of a 4th round pick.
This is what I was originally speculating dy 1. I said it probably just involves a swap of an early pick, but yeah that’s early…lol

So LISTEN to me people! 😉

  38. D's avatar D says:

Its not the same, punch comes from a different hand, the path to the QB is inverse, its a good bit different all the pass rush moves you have refined playing LDE are completely different. RT’s and LT, like DE’s arent always interchangeable, you see a good bit of players who when they change sides it completely changes their quality of play. If they gotta keep both, they need to draft a guy for RDE and let Wake tandem with him there. Let Williams do what he does best.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Yes, it’s also why we see difficulty for guys on the OL, going from RT – LT & LT to RT, even with the OG’s too.

  39. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Piggy > “I really think those udfa from a year ago should not be relied on – even as depth”
    Reply

Even as depth? WTF! There is talent that gets realized / developed all the itme in the NFL from 1st rounders to UDFA’s, to CFL, etc.
Many stars over the years and solid starters from UDFA’s.
To say you don’t want these guys even for depth….SMH!

…..and how many times have we seen big names drafted in the 1st round, even #1’s overall, become busts too?
It’s all about player development, schemes, and surrounding team. Who cares really what a guy’s done in college.
No one gets onto an NFL roster without some good production from somewhere before being invited to pro camps!

Ok, I beat ya up enough….lol
    Go Phins!

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

reliance and the possibility of it happening are two different things

they can compete for jobs just like anyone else

but I did not see standount performances from Vigil or Hewitt last year when they played
I saw a roster that lacked talent and was willing to play young players bc they had nothing to loose

if we drafted 2 or more LBs in the draft
those guys could easily be cut
Sure they can make the team or even start too

but let’s not get ahead of ourselves
we were really bad at LB last year
relying on rookie UDFA by the end of the year just underscores how bad we were at LB in 2015

  40. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Armando Salguero ‏@ArmandoSalguero 23m23 minutes ago
The Dolphins are losing DE Olivier Vernon, added DE Mario Williams. They will add another DE in UFA. Rams William Hayes in play.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

If we sign Hayes, then Wake is definitely gone.
We still better also draft a DE early, which I’m sure they will with the talent there in this class of 2016.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m not sure about that. Recent reports has us keeping Wake. I could see us drafting a DE either 1-2 rounds.

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Tim, why would we sign Mario, then Hayes, then draft a DE in the 1st-2nd rd, & still keep Wake’s big contract, restructure or not?

  41. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

D, one of our guys is gone. So glad we didn’t pay that…OMG, Jerry Reese just lost my respect with all the major FA signings….lol. Guess ya got to spend the money, but not foolishly.
Our deal for Maxwell is starting to look better, especially if he restructures. He has shown the ability to be as good as Jenoris Jenkins.
    _________________________

Giants agreed to terms with CB Janoris Jenkins, formerly of the Rams, on a five-year, $62.5 million contract.
The deal includes $29 million in fully guaranteed money. After turning down five years and $45 million from the Rams, Jenkins went on to hit it big as the No. 1 available corner. The $12.5 million per year places Jenkins as the league’s seventh-highest paid corner in terms of annual average.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I keep hearing on the radio and reading online how we’re these big spenders and we’re killing the cap etc. when that’s not really what happened the last couple of days.

It’s also silly to think that we targeted Maxwell because we think he sucks and just wanted to take on a big contract. We view him as a starter in our new defense. So is Alonso and so is Mario on a very solid deal. The media and idiot fans out there can…

    March 9, 2016 at 11:25 am (Edit)

How is that yuk? I think you’re underrating that group and overrating the LBs in the draft.

    ****************
I just don’t see what you see in our LB group as is
I see 2 guys with injury histories
UDFA rookie free agents that did the best they could under the circumstances but probably would not have even played if we had depth

and Jenkins – who I credit with production but probably overachieved in a large part bc of the lack of talent around him. I tend to think since no one else is collecting tackles – Jenkins better

Rashad Jones production last year was probably in a large part bc LBs were unable to produce

That group of Lbs screams for, at a minimum, competition in camp

Between Alonso, Hewitt, Vigil and Jenkins they are young enough to improve and in Alonso’s case even perform as he did as a rookie

but I think the possibility of that group being subpar when we look back at the 2016 season – is higher than any other unit on our team

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Your assessments are bizarre. I don’t get the whole this player did well because of this or that. Jenkins was very good in 2014 and played on a high ankle sprain most of 2015.

I don’t think Misi sucks, I think Hewitt has upside, Alonso is a good LB and then we add a rookie. This idea you have about stocking up on multiple rookie LBs is not a good approach. Mainly because they’re not all going to pan out and we already have young LBs developing.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        I didn’t say Misi sucks
I said its 2 guys with injury histories
and by that I meant Misi and Alonso

upside for Hewitt (or Vigil) is not something we can rely on
        maybe they have it
        maybe they don’t
but UDFA working there way into starters and that defense being a good defense is not the norm
it can happen – odds are it doesn’t

Jenkins is the most reliable of that group
we can probably count on him if we need to
but I think we can do better there

Its a collection of guys that might pan out
        That’s just what it is

we need more if we want to succeed
moves like this have not panned out for us in the past
there is a high risk of failure when there are that many questions

  50. D's avatar D says:

You dont have to convince me, the players we picked up and the cost to get them was pretty decent. We gave up what was equivalent to a 68th overall pick for the two starting caliber vets. It should cost us too much overall, 13th vs 8th has some downside but not a ton.

when something is too good to be true it usually is. There is a reason the eagles let those players go.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

They didn’t let them go, they traded them. Teams release, let walk and trade players all the time. We’re letting OV walk, there must be a reason. Miller will be signed by another team so I guess there’s a reason we let him walk. It works that way for all teams in FA.

  51. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

975 The Fanatic’s Geoff Mosher reports the Eagles and Titans will swap fourth-round picks as the terms of the DeMarco Murray trade.
The exact terms haven’t been established because compensatory picks will move the slots down, but it’s obviously a minor price for Tennessee to pay. The Titans do have the No. 2 pick in round four, so the Eagles will move to the top of that round. The Titans move down 12 slots. The real reason Philadelphia dealt Murray was to get rid of his contract. That deal was revised upon his arrival in Nashville, and is now valued at $25.5 million over four years.

you guys think that looks good for us?

Every once and a while ya get a few news tidbits from Charlies reporting, like who has met with whom, etc. You are right though its to be taken with a salt lick so nothing to base any sort of real potential outcome off of.

  53. drg's avatar drg says:

Sorry, I’m just not seeing it with this trade. We give up significant draft value in order to take on a horrible contract and a one year rental on a LB that is a huge question mark. Even if Mitchell gives us decent production he’ll still be violently overpaid for the life of his contract. Even if Alonso has a great season he’s an UFA and Dolphins have no leverage there. Repeat, we gave up draft value to do this. Bad move.

Williams is a decent rental and hopefully works out, but it’s another in a long line of patches. We are also expecting a vet with red flags to come in and play at a high level, be a leader, and support the coaching staff. Hasn’t really worked out too well in the past.

    • drg's avatar drg says:

One positive of the Williams deal is that it does most likely get us a 3rd round compensatory pick. That’s more like it.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I see it as a security blanket move

      and really not much else

I don’t think swapping picks is giving up a lot
So I’m not real concerned about it

But I don’t see these players as the type of players we should be going after.
I still expect us to look at both LB and CB in the draft

this gives us a little more room to take the BPA in the first at whatever position that is. we don’t have to be desperate to add a LB or CB bc we have vets in 2016 that have played before

not really a long term solution to anything though for the reasons you set out
      Just security IMO

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Significant draft value? What if our board has #8 through 15 as the same? People get too linear with the draft as usual. Just because 9 comes after 8 doesn’t mean the prospect that goes #8 is better than #9, the team picking at #8 took the player they like.

  54. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Piggy . “they can compete for jobs just like anyone else

if we drafted 2 or more LBs in the draft
those guys could easily be cut
Sure they can make the team or even start too”
    _______________________
But Piggy, it’s not like Hewitt & Vigil have been bouncing around on practice squads for 4 yrs.
They were rookies last year….rookies, don’t usually make huge impacts as rookies.
You think by “drafting 2 or more LB’s”, that the LB corp is magically fixed and we can easily cut Hewitt & Vigil???
Those rookies we draft are going to have to develop too, and stay healthy. Let’s see what our 2nd year players bring to the table first before we get hasty over the fact that they were once UDFA’s!

PS. I still want to draft a ILB within the 1st 4 rounds to develop, & even a OLB later if he’s a BPA in a given round.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think by adding better talent at LB we are more likely to be better

and I think the difference between an UDFA and a 2nd or 3rd rounder is usually talent

I don’t think we just happened to sign guys that went undrafted bc no one knew what they were talking about

they went undrafted for a reason
      they can overcome it

      but its an uphill climb

When you say “lets see what they bring”
      i’m on board with that
      I’m not writing anyone off

but depend on it in 2016
      NO WAY!

We need to draft talent to compete with that group of LBs
that’s not a very talented group

drg, I get your hesitations, but Maxwell is said to restructured as part of the deal, so we’ll see there.
Alonso can be given an extension anytime during the year before he becomes a UFA. My guess is if he looks good early on, in the 1st 1/4 of the season, or halfway thru, & is still healthy, then you propose an offer. Teams do it all the time.

Now for Mario, he’s glad to be out of that crap hole Buffalo. He knows his age is now becoming a factor. I think a good HC that can do well with a player’s psyche like Gase is known to be, can keep Mario motivated, plus he’ll have Suh pushing him too, maybe even Wake.

I find it hard to believe we are talking OGs and LBs again
since we spent a part of last season talking about those positions
then signed a bunch of UDFA and failed to signed Evan Mathis who played at a high level once signed.

    Can we actually add talent
    not just replace it?

Hayes for Wake will put me over the edge
    I really mean that

That’s like tripping out of the gate on a race

  58. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Im in shock. How did they fool us so badly? No one wanted Maxwell for that price. There is a decent market for CBs so why trade for an average one? Why trade for a LB who only started 33% of the time since he’s been in the league? Who is only a 1 year rental? I just don’t get it.

Where does it say we targeted anyone? It’s just as likely that they were shopping these guys to any bidder(forget the highest one). These guys weren’t in the plans for next year so they looked for someone to give them anything in return. We stepped up above and beyond.

  69. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Here’s how CSN-Philadelphia Eagles insider Andrew Kulp assessed Maxwell:

“It would be fair to characterize Maxwell’s season as up and down. It began at a low point with Julio Jones’ big game [against him] – nine catches for 141 yards and two touchdowns – then the following week, Maxwell appeared to give less than full effort on a 42-yard Terrence Williams catch-and-run during the fourth quarter of a loss to the Cowboys.

“Maxwell would turn it around in the weeks that followed. According to Pro Football Focus, from Weeks 3 to 13, the fifth-year corner was targeted 45 times in coverage, allowing 28 completions for 365 yards – a meager 8.1 average per attempt – and zero touchdowns. That works out to 45 yards per game, minus Week 4 against Washington, when he exited early with an injury. Yards per catch were kept to a minimum as well at just 92 total, and he only surrendered one reception over 23 yards during that span.

“But Maxwell would go on to end the season poorly, giving up big plays in back-to-back games against Buffalo and Arizona before going out with an injury. That’s the last thing people remember, which coupled with an ugly first impression, has many people down on his play overall.

“Maxwell,” Kulp went on to write, “is not a shutdown cornerback, which is what might be expected for the cost. That doesn’t mean he wasn’t a good addition to the Eagles roster. At the very least, he was certainly an improvement over what they had. The reality is Maxwell is not a bad player, he’s merely overpaid… Essentially, it was a two-year gamble on Maxwell developing into an elite cornerback. He has the size, talent and pedigree. Based on his body of work in Seattle, you couldn’t blame anybody for thinking he might make that leap.”

If he doesn’t live up to the deal in 2016, we can cut him in 2017 with no dead cap.

  70. drg's avatar drg says:

    Pig,

If you’re just looking at this trade in a vacuum, then sure, it isn’t the worst thing. My problem is the the way our franchise operates and this is just more of the same. I don’t agree with it in the slightest. We overspend on a few players and fill in the gaps with below average guys. We don’t maximize our volume of draft picks to account for the inevitable misses. We haven’t had an efficient coaching staff/FO for a long time to make sure that there is a system in place that maximizes the talent on the team and keeps egos in check. Just a crappy situation all around and there aren’t any easy or quick fixes.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Who are the players we overspent for? Maxwell and who? Who is below average?

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think we do this sort of musical chairs using free agency sometimes

And when the music stops – it might be a different chair but it’s no more comfy of a chair

We aren’t really the guy left standing up when the music stops

But we are yet to building a winning formula

I don’t like swapping guys out every offseason

Resigning Wake, instead of signing some one else to play DE will go a long way in changing my perception of what we are doing

But it does appear the same thing we have been doing for years

Just swapping players out instead of building something

  71. drg's avatar drg says:

I can easily see both as 4-5yr starters on this team EASILY health permitting.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

drg, as I replied to you above. If Alonso looks good then our FO can extend him anytime….and Maxwell is being restructured, plus he’s a big physical corner that we’ve seriously lacked. You rather Maxwell, or Sean Smith back? No need to reply 😉

  72. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

There are fans that were willing to still draft Jaylon Smith off a horrific knee injury in January and they’re fine with taking Jack at #8 also coming off a season ending knee injury, yet these injuries to proven players bother the shit out of everyone even though Alonso is healthy and Maxwell’s shoulder injury isn’t considered serious and he has 5 months before TC starts. I don’t get shit like that. LOL

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Jack will be ready at TC

Smith is potentially a late round steal

I do t hear a lot of people talking about drafting Smith early after what came out at the combine

Yeah abut it’s contradictory and all speculative and projection. Both Maxwel and Alonso have proven they can play.

  73. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Piggy, I wouldn’t lose sleep over the DeMarco Murray deal. He fell off significantly last season. Less production than our own Miller, & was under a huge contract, which even now is said to be restructured by the Titans @ a still hefty 4yrs $25.5M

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

  76. drg's avatar drg says:

    GDP,

Why would Mitchell restructure unless we are guaranteeing him more money? That just makes our cap situation even worse. If he performs like a #1 CB then the contract will still slightly overpay him, but I can live with that. There isn’t a ton of evidence to suggest he will though.

If Alonso plays at a high level next year we will have to pay him market or above market value to sign him so he’s not much different than any other FA other than we know what we’re signing. Similar to the OV situation right now.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Ooook, but that would be the situation regardless of who we had on the roster that had a hefty contract (Grimes, Cameron), or who was approaching UFA.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

If Maxwell performs like a number 1 then the contract becomes advantageous of the team. If Alonso gets back to form in 2016 then you pay him and lockdown the spot for years to come.

  78. drg's avatar drg says:

    Pig,

Suh eats up a HUGE amount of cap space. Does he give us an increase in performance at his position proportional to his salary? Our defense and DVOA was worse last year. You can blame other positions, but his salary hampers our ability to surround him with talent. He also doesn’t seem to be a leader in the locker room and inspire others.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I happen to like the Suh signing
I think that’s a player you build on

But the swapping out of players
      Like Dansby/Burnett for Ellerbee/Wheeler

      That kills me

I think it’s fair to say there is a new pariah every offseason
You can argue that Stills was a swap out for Wallace and we lost a 3rd rounder in that swap

      I’m fine adding players
Bu Grimes for Maxwell is a swap

      We were losing OV
So I’m not judging Williams for OV that way

But if we cut Wake and sign another DE

      That’s a big one

Jack has had only one major injury that he’s fully recovered from. Alonso has had one and then a re-tear of the injury. Once again, Alonso has started 33% of his games and most of them were his first year in the league. That’s not a minor quibble.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Alonso is a hit or miss gamble right now. He can pay off really big and he can fade away into anonymity because of that injury history.

But moving down in the draft does have value

    • drg's avatar drg says:

And I would have been okay with retaining OV for a decent price, but we aren’t in a good position to retain him for what his price looks to be. I think the Williams deal plus a compensatory makes sense. That compensatory might disappear though if we sign a couple high priced FAs.

Teams like Pittsburgh & NE dump older high priced vets a year early rather than a year too late.

It’s all a gamble, and one that is a fine line many times. These guys have more inside knowledge than we do, and they’re obviously weighing all the decisions very heavily.

Finally I didn’t buy it with Wallace and the Dolphins in 2014

Once you are out of the playoffs their is less motivation than before and that’s just the way it is

I expect the Bills to miss the playoff next year too

NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reports the Jets and Dolphins are interested in free agent Matt Forte.
Forte has now been connected to three teams, with Green Bay joining Miami and New York.

Doug Kyed of NESN.com reports the Patriots have shown interest in free agent Rishard Matthews.
Matthews has been connected to both New England and Tennessee in the past two days. Teams that whiffed on Marvin Jones (Lions) should be taking a long look at Matthews, who plays a similar game and is coming off a strong season in Miami, before it was cut short by five games due to fractured ribs.

    GDP

Those guys that are 30+ have limited time left
    No question about that
But adding young guys has nothing to do with that

You add young guys behind them
You let them compete for jobs
    You build off that

Maybe the 30+ year olds beat the odds
Maybe the young guys are better

    But we don’t do that
We just replace the whole thing
    And everyone is new
And we don’t know what we have
    It’s a gamble
But I think if you keep your guys that previously performed and bring in young guys it’s a much safer gamble

I get all that, but then this thing called Cap & contracts & injuries, & new coaches & new systems comes into play that has to be factored. It’s very hard as a GM to have the best of all worlds. Some tough decisions have to be made every year.

Browns just lost Alex Mack to the Falcons for $9.5M per year, and Travis Benjamin went to the Chargers…….

Piggy, who are we giving up and how have we fared with the same players year after year?

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Piggy was afraid to cut ties with his former employer & start his own team.
Now that he finally made the tough deal, he may find bigger production, success, & his financial stats could soar! 😀

Honestly it seems like this FA period has been a more self controlled one by Miami IMO. How many HUGE contracts have they’ve been associated with that will be announced at 4pm?

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Seems so. Like I said, every team has to add & subtract FA’s each year. These moves by Miami seem to be for the good of the team Capwise (in most cases), and also leaves the feeling that they’ll also continue to build thru the draft.
You have to have a balance of both!
