The Wedge Scouting Report: Mackensie Alexander, CB

Wedge here for Toots SuperGlue!

Ever had one of those days?

Nothing can withstand the gravitational forces you pass through.

Everything comes to pieces!

Well that’s when you need your Toots SuperGlue!

TOOTSGLUEAD

TOOTS is the Glue you can rely on like superstar cornerback Mackensie Alexander.

Just apply a little bit of Toots Superglue to you broken Photon Belt or your best Wide Receiver and like Magic you are back in space again or pitching a shutout on the football field.

Toots and Alexander are airtight and won’t let anything come between them and the receiver, including bombs!

MackensieAlexander5

Alexander was one of the most highly ranked high school prospects coming out of high school.  He was talented then, he is talented now.

Toots won Space Ship Saver of the year last millennium.  And it still saves Space Ships!

Some think Alexander will be the first cornerback taken in the draft!  Some also think Toots will glue a moon to a planet!

Before the combine Alexander declared to the NFL “I am the best cornerback in the draft”…cocky, you bet!  True….maybe!

Cornerbacks need to be confident, and Mackensie certainly is.

And I am confident Toots will permanently glue anything it touches!

NCAA FOOTBALL: SEP 12 Appalachian State at Clemson

Guess how many interceptions Alexander had at Clemson…

The answer is ZERO.  Guess why?

Yep, you guessed it, no one dared to throw the ball near him.

Like Toots Superglue which never breaks down.  Toots is permanent and not safe for your kids to play with.

Alexander is true shutdown defensive back.  And Toots will kill your pets if they eat it!

MackensieAlexander4

Alexander is yet another prospect with Florida roots, hailing from Immokalee Florida.

I don’t know where that is but its probably full of football fields.

Toots, on the other hands, is harnessed out of the semen of dead lifeforms!

At the combine Alexander didn’t run the 40 but or really any drills at all except the bench where he benched 225 pounds 11 times.

At the Saturn New Products Fair, Toots glued an alien’s tentacles to his own pancreas 11 times!

FBC: Russell Atheletic Bowl: Clemson vs. Oklahoma

Let’s face it, if you are an NFL Team you need a Mackenzie Alexander on your roster.

And if you are an intergalactic agent, you need Toots SuperGlue in your spaceship!

Get your Toots SuperGlue now…look for the sexy alien on the label.

StickTootsGlue

Oh…and one more thing now you can get new MAX Toots SuperGlue.

Speaking of which…if Mackensie Alexander was an Alien Weapon of Destruction, he would be a bottle of MAX Toots SuperGlue!

This was a HUGE game to secure homefield in the playoffs vs. our HATED NE!!!

    Ken,
Millers a more explosive back who’s a long ball threat. Anderson is more powerful between the tackles and a much more consistent runner.
    ———-
The homerun threat has been replaced to a more consistent 3rd and short conversion type back.

CJ Anderson is more of a grinder than MillerTime. He’s not going to have those 50 yard breakaway runs, but he’ll get a bunch of 4-5 yard runs where there wasn’t much to get.
    ——–
Both he and Ajayi are physical backs which means that in tandem, the big chunk yards may not be there as much as it would with Lamar Miller but both Anderson/Ajayi are going to tire out plenty of LB 🙂

All these guys are value players to create more depth, we can’t afford any more stars, we need the just above average starter guys.

  9. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I didn’t realize CJ could be had for no picks, I was wondering what they were doing, when there’s several backs out there that are similar. Miller runs more like Bush.

I heard today that Alonso was Dion Jordan’s roommate at Oregon, maybe he can get him straight.

  11. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Mike, Josh Robinson missed all but 2 games last season with a torn pec., but was solid the year before.
    He’s a former 3rd (66) pick from UCF, 25yo 5’10 199.
We rebuild that DL & get after QB’s like Vance plans to, then all our DB’s will be ok most of the time.

  12. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I don’t know if any of these guys we signed are any good, except for Williams he’s a beast. Wake, Williams and Suh should do what Wake, Suh and Vernon didn’t, create havoc. Suh did at times, when the entire line wasn’t blocking him, and Wake did when he got the 4 sacks, but together not often enough.

Build a strong, versatile OL, and you don’t have to worry about the RB position. We’ll be throwing 65-68% of the time anyway.

    • D's avatar D says:

If healthy, and given past two years thats a big IF, we have 3 solid players, its rare that an entire OL is strong but in our case because we have lost a tackle each year, not having a good OG to help anchor a side means when we lose out OT we lose out OL. If we have one really solid count on him OG from either draft or FA/cuts. I believe our OL will look night and day different. It would be nice to have studs all the way across and we can work towards that, but just one guy could turn this OL around.

Thanks bud! I meant college career. I know Sonny would have seen him, he played for UCF

  18. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Yesterday an NFL analyst said our Offense last yr was comparable to a high school O, and very predictable. That’s what can make an OL look horrible.

  19. drg's avatar drg says:

Still enjoying us bargain shopping right now. Would have been cool with Miller at 6.5/year, but Anderson at 4.5/year is good by me. Probably need to splurge a little on LG and DE. I think there are some decent CBs still available that will come at a reasonable price..

Hoping we draft a QB to serve as a backup behind Tannehill. It would be nice to have someone worth developing at that spot. We aren’t a SB contender so why blow 6 or 7 million on a backup?

  20. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    steve,
I agree with the sentiment, but we had some pretty bad individual play on the OL last year. They definitely got no help from coaches or coordinators…I’ve been saying that for a long time, but some guys still played pretty badly. Either those individuals need to play a lot better, or we need better personnel….including depth.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I can’t argue that, and those guys know they need to play better, but look at what Den. did to NE, because NE didn’t run the ball, it happens to every team. You just can’t let the D tee off on your QB.

  21. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Someone mentioned earlier I don’t remember who that a swap of 2nd rd picks would have been better. The Eagles don’t have a 2nd rd pick so that was not an option.

  22. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

As for C.J. Anderson, Gase knows him well and what he’s capable of and you know how coaches like their guys so that was a natural fit. He had his best year under Gase, very productive per touch.
He signed for what we probably wanted Miller to sign for but he wanted more so that’s that.

  23. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    D,
I see what you’re getting at, but I’m not so sure one solid guard makes the difference. That’s assuming Albert stays healthy all year or we find a capable replacement(big ?), that our young RT comes back healthy and resumes his nice play and development(hopefully he does), that the other guard(Turner, Thomas or Douglas) steps up their play quite a bit, and that we build the depth on the unit as well…and it actually plays well when needed. There are a lot of “ifs” on this OL. Yes, one solid, professional guard MIGHT make a substantial difference but only if all that other stuff falls right too. That’s a lot of “what ifs”.
    ***
Again, I think Albert’s health is the big key to what this OL does next year. A lot hinges on that…and the domino affect it has on the whole OL.

  24. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Tim

I’m not sure if I did, but I felt like he might be a target for us.

  25. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m not always cranky, nor happy, but always honest.

  26. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We see QB play and scheme help out a lot of Olines, not only do we need the scheme help, but Tannehill needs to get his head out and figure out how to avoid the rush. People say he’s been sacked too much, but how many of them are his fault for holding onto the ball too long, or running right into a defender, or failing down to avoid a big hit. Two yrs ago I watched every sack on tape and none of the sacks were big hits, he always got out of harms way. He took bigger hits when he got rid of the ball late.

Getting C.J. Anderson would be nice.

  30. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Anyone watch the Alexander tape against ND, posted by Piggy in the article? He doesn’t look like a shutdown corner to me. At one point they mention the speedy ND WR only had one catch for about 7 yrds, but that QB couldn’t hit the ocean from the beach.

  31. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Besides the usual Ken and Mike, anyone else apposed to CJ?

  32. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The fact that we’ve addressed defense in the trade and in FA leaves me to believe we may target a top guard in the 2nd rd. Not saying we won’t add a vet but that may be our thinking. We met with a lot of them at the Senior Bowl and combine.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Gase said he wasn’t going to stay pat on the Oline.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

True he also said there are ways to do a better job in protection and to avoid QB hits and sacks. My guess is quicker routes schemes, more pocket movement, and less 5 man blocking with and empty backfield and 5 wide. Also using the running game to keep the dogs from pinning their ears back and setting up play-action passing. It’s really not that complicated.

  33. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I heard we signed an offer that was hard for Den. to match. What’s so hard about $18M? I didn’t hear of a poison pill. $4.5M for an RB like that is a bargain. Houston will soon find out why Miller didn’t get more touches.

  34. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    steve
You’re preaching to the choir, bud. I’ve been saying that for years! Lol

  35. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Steve

I actually don’t have a problem with the trade. I was unhappy when it was reported we gave PHI our 4th RD pick in addition to the swap, but we didn’t, and I’m OK with it. We need a bigger, more physical CB, and if Alonso can get back to what he was, or close, we got a steal.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Well a good sign is that Alonso played the last 9 games of the season last year and finished up well. If he was coming off of an injury like missing the last few games of the season we’d be less sure of his status. He’s currently healthy so no reason to go into the season thinking otherwise. Maxwell said he’ll be ready for minicamps so no need to worry there either.

Guys get hurt in this league, we seem to think that only our guys get banged up. It was rampant throughout the league last year.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I think that it’s more that we sign free agents, draft, and trade for players that are banged up that bothers people Tim

  36. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Miami also, quite purposely, front-loaded the deal. According to Mike Klis of 9 News in Denver, the Dolphins included a $5.25 million signing bonus along with a $6 million guarantee in 2016 and $3.5 million in guaranteed 2017 money.
    *
See this I don’t get. If these numbers are correct, he’s going to get more guaranteed money than Miller. If true, this just doesn’t make sense to me.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

And he is not as good as Miller

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I couldn’t agree more. I can deal with the other losses because we couldn’t pay them what other teams did, but the Miller loss stings a whole lot.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Gase likes the type of runner CJ is. The contract is still less if they both finish out their contracts.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

They almost never do Mike. The guaranteed money is really all that matters. Once they hit that, it’s renegotiation time.

Did they hire Lazor or Sherman as an OC?

  38. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MikeE,
Only from everything people have been saying is that Philly is in a purge mode, and it was well known they were willing to deal to get rid of guys and contracts. And, we still had to swap 1st round picks for an overpaid CB who had a bad year last year and everyone knew they were getting rid of anyway and a LB in the last year of his rookie contract with a significant injury history going to his 3rd team in 3 years? Why did we need to swap 1sr round picks? It sounds to me like we did them a favor.

  39. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

    Steve,
Denver still needs to sign Von Miller to a long term deal and they don’t have a QB.

  40. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Brian, we’re not the only team that targets injured guys when they have intel that they should recover and be fine. Maxwell and Alonso are not injury risks at this time. So that’s not what happened here. Von Miller blew his knee a few years ago and missed the season. It happens. He was SB MVP this year.

  41. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Randy

I’m just happy that we have all our picks, and I’m not really bothered by the 5 spot trade. I know it bothers you guys, but that doesn’t kill it for me. You have to give up something, I’m sure it was negotiated. It does give us more freedom through the rest of the draft as to what we take, so that may have factored in as well.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I really think they had similar grades on a few prospects we know we’ll still have a shot at and they were fine with that. #8 had us discussing like 10 different guys, there wasn’t a no-brainer.

  42. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Randy, I’ve already posted that between weeks 3-13 Maxwell played very well. He had a bad start and finished bad then got injured. There is a lot of negative bias out there from social media, disgruntled Eagles fans and the all important PFF. They are mentioned here but it’s not about a grade, it’s about targets, completions, yardage etc.

Here’s how CSN-Philadelphia Eagles insider Andrew Kulp assessed Maxwell:

“It would be fair to characterize Maxwell’s season as up and down. It began at a low point with Julio Jones’ big game [against him] – nine catches for 141 yards and two touchdowns – then the following week, Maxwell appeared to give less than full effort on a 42-yard Terrence Williams catch-and-run during the fourth quarter of a loss to the Cowboys.

“Maxwell would turn it around in the weeks that followed. According to Pro Football Focus, from Weeks 3 to 13, the fifth-year corner was targeted 45 times in coverage, allowing 28 completions for 365 yards – a meager 8.1 average per attempt – and zero touchdowns. That works out to 45 yards per game, minus Week 4 against Washington, when he exited early with an injury. Yards per catch were kept to a minimum as well at just 92 total, and he only surrendered one reception over 23 yards during that span.

“But Maxwell would go on to end the season poorly, giving up big plays in back-to-back games against Buffalo and Arizona before going out with an injury. That’s the last thing people remember, which coupled with an ugly first impression, has many people down on his play overall.

“Maxwell,” Kulp went on to write, “is not a shutdown cornerback, which is what might be expected for the cost. That doesn’t mean he wasn’t a good addition to the Eagles roster. At the very least, he was certainly an improvement over what they had. The reality is Maxwell is not a bad player, he’s merely overpaid… Essentially, it was a two-year gamble on Maxwell developing into an elite cornerback. He has the size, talent and pedigree. Based on his body of work in Seattle, you couldn’t blame anybody for thinking he might make that leap.”

  43. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I just saw on the nfl network ticker that the broncos will match the offer for anderson. Is that true?

  44. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
Even with that, I think it’s too much. I just value draft slots more than some, I guess. It’s not a trade that is gonna hamstring us for years or anything. I just think we got fleeced a little. Hopefully, both players play really well for us for a long time.

  45. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

After searching the internet, I respond with: “I can’t find anything about the niners grabbing Maxwell, are you talking about the Giants (baseball) or something?”

lol, needless to say, I’ve been out of the loop.

Williams, Maxwell, Alonso, Bushrod, Anderson. Hey, at least we’re making some changes. That was paramount.

The professionals screw up all the time, so you’re point of view that us peons have no clue and shouldn’t question them really holds no water. We’ve gone through this a million times, and you rip professionals for their decisions as much as anybody. Lol

Kong, I was thinking about that earlier with Jordan. How crazy would it be that he steps into DE and plays well? LOL

big difference is i do it after they are proven wrong. i dont pretend to know more then them and come on here and say how they were wrong before proven wrong. to assume that they negotiated a bad deal when no one knows what the negotiations were is just foolish. how do you know philly wasnt asking for the fins 1st and 2nd pick and the fins got them to go for just a swap of first. i get one having a opinion but to state they would have done it better then the professionals doing i think is just foolish. i think philbin sucked and was an awful coach but as bad as he is he still knows more about football then me and pretty much everyone on this blog.

  74. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

and with that i am out, i will let you guys who know more then the people who get paid to do things have fun showing how ignorant the fins management is.

    night all

Nobody made the Dolphins make a trade with Philly. They could have said No at any point. They chose to give up what they did for the players they got. Saying they couldn’t have gotten a better deal doesn’t make the one they made irrefutable or unquestionable. It’s no different than questioning a draft pick or FA accusation. I think it’s okay to question the value of a trade, but I do agree we won’t know whether it was a good or bad trade for awhile. But, since when has that ever stopped anybody around here from questioning it…including you. Lol

I saw Herdfan alluded to something earlier, but didn’t scroll back far enough to see. Now that I know it’s gorilla related I may have to take a gander, lol.

    Tim,
There really is nowhere for Jordan to go but up, so fingers crossed.

Gase is said to be know for being able to reach players, has that knack for psychology,, compassion, communication, etc.
If the young HC can’t get through to Dion FF, along with Kiko Alonso, his friend & former teammate, then nobody can or will.
Hopefully this experience has given Dion Jordan his come to Jesus moment as they say.

If the mind can being to match the body, then he’ll be able to have a decent career.

The Dolphins expect the NFL will award them a third-round pick, a fourth-round pick and a seventh-round pick — at the very least, people within the team are thinking — as compensatory picks from the NFL in 2017. That is obviously in addition to Miami’s regular stash of draft picks.

I am jaded but I don’t think this will happen, somehow the league will conspire to screw us and we will get less than three compensatory picks. But it would be nice if it happens

3rd 4th and 7th is what I said the other day I expected. Just waiting on Moore to see if it’s a 6th as well will depend on the contract he gets elsewhere. What was Matthews contract?

  87. D's avatar D says:

I heard they might look for a 4th receiver in FA, Why not just replace a former 7th round grab with another. WR, RB and CB always has some promising candidates late in the draft and with two, take a couple guys with promise let them compete with Hazel for 4th 5th and possibly 6th spot on the roster.

Demarcus Robinson would be one guy I would look for if he falls that far. I also wouldn’t be opposed to drafting a guy earlier if somehow someone with real value dropped further than expected.
