Wedge Scouting Report: Darron Lee, LB

Ohio State is loaded with prospects in 2016

Joey Bosa, Eli Apple, Ezekial Elliot, Taylor Decker, Braxton Miller, Von Bell, Joshua Perry, Michael Thomas, Adolphus Washington!

So many prospects I feel like Moe the Cranium Crusher put my head in a vice again.

Mo the Head Squasher

Who is Moe?  He is the little squirt who takes my head to a vice when I don’t file a planet destroyer file on time.

I hate him…or her…or it…whatever that little blob is…I would squash him if I could.

but I can never find him away from the deadly vice.

And I’m not getting near that vice.

Kind of like my favorite Buckeye Darron Lee

DarronLee5

I’m not getting near Darron Lee…guess why…

BECAUSE HE WILL SMASH YOUR CRANIUM!!!

This aggressive linebacker will come out you with force!

On a team full of talent, he might be the most talented Buckeye (sorry Joey Bosa, just one Alien’s opinion)

DarronLee4

Lee decided to come out as a sophomore, so maybe he hasn’t received as much attention as the other Buckeyes.

But he should have!

And after his combine performance, you bet he is getting the attention he deserves.  Lee ran an impressive 4.47 in the 40 yard dash.  Zoooooooooooooooooom!

If you don’t give him attention now, he might squash your human head…

Like many Linebackers this year he might be considered undersized by some.  He is 6’2, 235 pounds.  Not huge by NFL standards.

OSU14UM_CRR_27

But don’t tell Lee you think he is undersized if you value your head not being squashed.

He’s explosive and he hits with power!  BOOM!  Your head is sauce now!

Lee is a good pass rusher who managed to compile 6.5 sacks as a freshman and 4.5 as a sophomore.  He also tallied 3 interceptions in his career.

DarronLee5

It might be a historic draft for Ohio State.  Maybe they break the record for 1st round picks in the draft.  Or maybe they break the record for most players drafted in one season.

Darron Lee doesn’t care about that though.

Darron Lee takes your history and he bashes you with it.  Darron Lee just wants to bash you.  So don’t give him anything to do it with for your own good.

DarronLee6

Lee is all over the field:  making impact plays behind the line of scrimmage, dropping into coverage, going from one side off the field to the other.  Its helps to have sub 4.50 speed!

You can make an argument that Lee is the truest linebacker in the NFL draft.

And if you don’t make that argument, Lee will smash you.

If Lee was an Alien Weapon of Destruction, he would be the Galactic Cranium Smasher Vice (sans Mo, so I can finally kill him)

So no mocks say we’re taking Ragland? That’s good!

  2. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s really hard not to like Gase, after watching several of his interviews. He’s a rookie HC, but as he said he’s been doing this half his life. He’s says they’re bringing all these guys in on the Dline to get after it. Pressure on the line, on the corners… finally someone with a clue. Seems like he’s someone off of this board, one of our own, going in to coach 😉

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      I don’t like him

      He eats bacon

      🐖 For life!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I liked when they asked Gase how are you going to use Maxwell and he turned around like what, we’re going to play him on the LOS and press because that’s how he likes to play and we’re going to let him do it.

Gase is an offensive guy but OCs need to know everything about defense too to beat it. He probably wants to build a defense that he finds difficult to move the ball against.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

He shouldn’t be shocked by the question on Maxwell, if he is he better get used to it, because every other question from Chris Perkins and Omar is retarded. After what we went through with Philbin, it was actually a good question, but they may get a clue soon not to ask him any stupid questions.

Philbin was funny though, every time Omar asked him a stupid question he made sure to use his name, so everyone knew who the schmuck was 😛

  3. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Steve

I like Gase, but I have to wait until we see what the team looks like, and how we do before I really like him. Coaches sometimes say all the right things, it’s how the team plays that counts.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Definitely but you can like his philosophies going in. Pressure defense and aggressive offense. He really likes out WR group, he touched on that multiple times and it wasn’t juts lip service. Landry, Parker and Stills, what’s not to like? All really young with upside. He said when he was in CHI last year they were targeting Stills before we traded for him. He likes his skill set.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

After last yr I thought the same thing Mike, but there’s something about Gase… From all the ringing endorsements to his high school coach saying he went to him to write plays to the confidence he exudes. The more I hear him talk the more he reminds me of Belicheat, except he doesn’t have that look on his face like he just took a dump.

  6. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, I was thinking about if we drafted Ragland in our new defense, I could see him blitzing straight up the middle behind Suh and Mitchell/Phillips along with Wake and Williams etc. on the edges. Imagine a guy with his heavy hitting nailing the QB right in the chest from time to time. The guy hits like a truck. I feel his athletic ability is underrated and lack of it is overstated. He performed well at the combine and people act like he didn’t do that and he is just what they thought he was.

I’d be fine taking him. He’d make the entire LB corps better. We could utilize a 4-5 man rotation based on the opponent and game situation. Put guys in situations that fit their skill sets. There’s lots of situations in football. It’s not just about covering the best TEs in the league. LOL

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I could see him doing that and more. I know we discussed it already, but in that wide 9, you better have a guy in the middle that knows what he’s doing, can anticipate correctly, and make the tackle in that big space.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I also, unlike a lot of other people, think he’s going to be a 3-down LB. He can cover, probably as good as most LB’s can.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yep! Alonso knows what he’s doing but he might be better flexing with say Jenkins and Hewitt at OLB. Ragland would probably make Misi more of a rotation role player as well.

When we go big against the run you have both Ragland and Misi in there. When we go small for coverage in nickel roll with the OLBs. Even in base I could see us rushing 5 at times with Ragland and dropping 6 with a 2-4. He blitzed and rushed the passer at Alabama quite a but so it’s nothing new for him. It’s not like he won’t be able to drop in coverage and do a solid job as well.

He’s a big hitter and I think we could use more of that at LB. There is so much tape of him hitting guys and the ball popping out whether incomplete or a fumble.

  7. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I noticed a bunch of hits where the ball when flying. We could definitely use that

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’d be excited about a rotation of Alonso, Ragland, Jenkins, Hewitt and Misi with Vigil being the 6th man. You have a lot of STs there as well.

The front 4 is key and then the corners.

  13. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Tim & Mike E, If we pass on Raglan early, since we have Alonso. Then don’t sleep on a guy like this also @ MLB. He’s a sleeper that no one really talks about. Carries a 4-6 round projection.
He’s also a big hitter like Ragland, very similar in size too.

TFY Draft Insider’s Tony Pauline jotted down that Utah LB Jared Norris “looked smooth and fluid” during Pro Day positional drills on Thursday.
In addition to his smooth position work, Norris also ran the 40 in 4.68 seconds, the three-cone drill in 6.86 seconds and the short shuttle in 4.23 seconds. The 6-foot-1, 241-pounder finished the 2015 campaign having made 87 tackles (6.5 for loss), a sack and two forced fumbles. CBS Sports draft analyst Dane Brugler was particularly high on him during the season, writing at one point in late October that he “plays like a controlled mad man on the field,” though that statement comes with some less flashy critiques of pad-level and tightness in space.

  14. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Bro, I’m not saying Ragland has to be the guy, just discussing how he’d fit if we did. I think there are 12-15 different ways we could go. I’m not worried about it. Just land a core guy.

A LB that I absolutely love for Miami that, IMO, isn’t getting the love he should is James Burgess from Louisville.

  29. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Burgess seems like a guy that if he got the right coach, that was willing to work hard on him, could become a better player.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

You know how we talk about the lanes that open for LBs because of Suh & even more now because of the wide 9? That’s what he excels at. He’s good in coverage and will take someone’s head off.

  30. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Bri

They were explaining that usually if a ball gets stuck it’s a ground rule double, and they don’t go over ground rules in the spring training games, so they kind of gave him a pass. Ron Darling had a funny line though, said “You think maybe Harvey is getting a complex with Cespedes in CF with inside the park HR’s?”

  31. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Burgess, another good sleeper prospect. He was a Combine snub, but at his recent pro day he looked fast, I think it was 4.53. He’s 6′ 236. He’s got a private workout scheduled with the Phins coming up. In regards to Suh, Burgess played behind the top DT in Sheldon Rankins.

  32. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    D-Bolt

You want Burgess for depth and ST’s, right?

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

If Gase & VJ is high on Alonso @ Mike, then they’ll likely pass on Ragland. But pick up a later round guy like Burgess or Jared Norris to groom behind Kiko. To me that would be a good move.

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

….also add BJ Goodson & Nick Kwiatkoski to this list. These guys aren’t that far off from Ragland, and in time could become good players, even start at some point…IMO.

I wasn’t necessarily talking about Ragland, just that Burgess seems like he needs a lot of work. A kid with some raw talent, but the scouting reports say he’s sometimes lost out on the field, not exactly what you’re looking for from the QB of the defense.

  35. There isn’t a single DT prospect in this draft, including those projected to go in the first round, who give us an upgrade over what we’ve got in Jordan Phillips. Phillips was a 1st rd pick who we got in the 2nd.
And, to add to that; you put Charles Tapper on his side at DE and that makes 3 players offensive lines would need to double w/Suh, Phillips and Tapper. I’d be as happy as Piggy.

  36. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

    Mike?
In regards to Burgess STs, depth, & development.

  37. I knew people wouldn’t agree w/me on Wentz and that’s fine but I watched him play both years at NDSU and he’s definitely, without a doubt, more NFL ready than Tannehill was when he came out. If he were to start THIS year for the Phins I doubt the team would even skip a beat.
Tannehill does some things well but he doesn’t do any one thing great. He’s not a player who can put a team on his back and win games and he needs a full supporting cast around him to get things done. I’ve seen Wentz do things in college that I’ve never seen Tannehill do as a pro, like getting the ball out quicker when under pressure.
The truth of the matter is Carr passed him out this past season and with two seasons under his belt Wentz will pass him out too.
I never liked the Tannehill pick; never understood how you can take a guy who had all those issues as a qb in college at #8 and pass on a guy like Keuchly. I’ve half-heartedly supported him because he’s our qb but if he doesn’t get the job done this year I’m thru with hearing excuses about why he couldn’t do his job. He needs to step up to the plate and stop having everyone wiping his ass for him.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Tannehill is exceptional throwing on the run even across his body which is something we should utilize more. I think having him in shotgun so much was a disservice to his development but we’ll likely still use him in shotgun quite a bit in our new offense. I expect him to take his game to another level under Gase and Christensen.

  38. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    GDP

I think you really underrate Ragland, and I think I probably overrate him. I don’t really get the “not far off” statement about guys (Goodson, Kwiatowski) who are likely late RD picks. Whoever drafts Ragland, he’s a guaranteed day one starter, whereas guys like Kwiatowski and Goodson might just be fighting to make a roster. It’s like saying Beniquez Brown isn’t far off Myles Jack. It’s just not accurate.

  39. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Lou

I think this is definitely the “make or break” season for Tannehill. He has to improve quite a bit from last season, or this will be his last season in Miami

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

BTW – I also loved Kuechly, but I admit I wanted to draft Tannehill, because I thought he could be our QB for the future, and I honestly didn’t expect him to start from day 1. I think at this point we need to load up on talent, and hope Tanny is the man. If not, we’ll be drafting a QB next year.

    • Definitely. He’s got his “quarterback whisperer” in Gase and there’s no more excuses from here on. It’s time HE steps up to the plate and starts being a leader on offense.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Let’s not act like he hasn’t been productive though. There’s been a lot more going on with this team than just Tannehill doesn’t do this or that.

      • There’s some things that make me wonder about him. Like the Philly game when there’s a db on his left side uncovered and the db comes on a blitz and he takes a deep drop into the EZ allowing the db to hit him square in the back, knocking the ball out, resulting in a safety. Even if he’s not allowed to change protections and bring in a WR tight to block the db why would you take the deep drop seeing that db there? Or did he even see him? I brought this up on the Finsiders and OJ agreed. He said everyone saw it. Why didn’t Ryan?
Same thing happened against NE with a db on the right side. DB comes on a blitz and he’s running to his left holding the ball out and gets hit and fumbles in and NE recovers.
There’s some things you have to question. He can throw some pretty passes and makes some good throws on the run and he’s been hammered but there’s some things you see from him that just make you shake your head. And, if you’re a qb in your 4th yr taking all them hits why would you not be up in anyone’s face during a game? Why wouldn’t you, the qb who is getting pummeled, be in Thomas’ face when he lets someone go right by him for a sack instead of walking off the field emotionless? If that’s me, I’m ripping someone a new ass.

  40. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

    Lou,
I disagree about Carr being better than tanny. We’ll see which one has a better rating this year.

  41. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Mike, yes I know the guys I mentioned and Burgess are gonna need a couple years to develop their NFL game. But if we are going with Alonso in the middle, then it makes me think taking Ragland in the 1st isn’t the wisest of options. There is talent @ ILB to be had later in the draft.
If anything, we’ll see a OLB drafted earlier than ILB.
    We’ll soon see what happens.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Nothing is settled yet. Right now, Alonso fits in the middle, but it would be a big upgrade to have Ragand in the middle, Alonso at WLB, and either Misi, Jenkins or Hewitt at SLB. I wouldn’t put a lot of stock on where the staff said anyone is playing until after the draft is done.

  42. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Things that make you go Aww! Wish I had those two!

  43. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Lou, our offense was a piece of shit last year in scheme and play calls. I’ve written it off. There were so many things wrong with how we went about it. I’m excited to see our new offense under Gase and Christensen.

  44. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

    mike,
Tanny 2 years ago was better than carr last year. I think all around I would rather have tanny than carr. Again we’ll see who rates better this year.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t disagree Boulder, but last year, Carr was better. There are always reasons why these things happens, but facts are facts.

  45. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I’m the lone poster today on markeyh’s Dolphin blog. Maybe I should have yelled FIRST!

  46. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Tannehill was the 4th best at the long ball in the NFL last yr. Even though most times he had like 1.8 seconds to throw. He hit 37 out of 68 for 55%.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I have a feeling he’s gonna have good year when it comes to throwing deep. Parker and Landry can both go deep and I bet Stills will get thrown to deep more. I think stills is going to have better year this year.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        Landry is very versatile

but I really think Parker and Stills are an excellent deep ball duo
and that gives Landry a good job to clean up underneath

besides I enjoy watching Landry fight with defenders with the ball in his hand after the catch….He’s funner to watch on the short stuff….lol

  47. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’m a little Iffy on Tannehill as well
I do think time will tell though
its not like he’s been horrible
and its not like he has been mvp material

so right now I have more questions than anything else about him

  48. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I think what Lou says about Tannehill not seeming to be aware of blitzers is true, but that can be taught. It was partially a function of that “haunted” feeling he must have felt about needing to throw so fast and partially that stubborn idea that Lazor (and Philbin) had that the coach calls the plays and the players are too stupid to read and react to what is on the field. and thus not allowed to change plays. With Gase and Clyde whispering wisdom and tips into Ryan’s intelligent brain, maybe we see his awareness and pocket presence really improve.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That’s what I think, and mostly hope.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      the thing is

he is so far behind the 8 ball in terms of awareness
      its very frustrating

we knew he was raw when he was drafted
but I expected him to come around on things like that by now
      and he hasn’t

but maybe its just taking a little more time with him

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Or someone was suppose to pick up the blitzer and they didn’t.

  49. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Mike, Alonso prefers the middle. Gase seems to mostly want to play guys where they’re more comfortable, where their strengths are.
But I agree, it’s a fluid thing for now until not only the draft is over, but also how people look ‘live’ in camps.

  50. Carr still hasn’t hit his ceiling yet. Tannehill is just about there. What you see is what you get. Like I said, Tannehill needs a full supporting cast around him to get the job done. He’s not a guy that defenses fear going against because he can make things happen because he can’t. So, any improvement we see in Tannehill this year is going to be due to there being an overall improvement in the offense itself but don’t expect Tannehill, himself, to take some huge leap just because Gase is coaching him up.
With all the talk of Tannehill having the ability to make changes this year the ball is in his court. So, let’s see what he can do. Let’s see if he finally becomes that leader he should have been by now and starts getting people fired up on the sideline and starts calling guys out when they aren’t doing their jobs.

  51. Believe me, I’m hoping people are right about Tannehill. I hope this year with a new set of coaches and a HC who is supposed to be able to work wonders with qb’s we see a different guy so, if it happens, all the better b/c I’m a Phins fan first and foremost. I just have my doubts b/c even with all that has happened with the O I have to wonder why a guy who was in his 4th yr wouldn’t have been more emotionally involved. To me, he didn’t show the leadership I would have wanted in a 4th yr guy. I’m not saying he’s got to be like Rivers when it comes to that stuff but, dammit man, yell at someone every once in awhile.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

actually it was written about how he was voicing displeasure & yelling at players, not just on the field, but in the locker room etc.

  52. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I don’t agree that having somebody call you out in front of your teammates and the fans and media and your paycheck signing coaches is a great way to motivate people. Some guys might respond to that, and a little of that in precise spots might work, but no player goes without mistakes. Rodgers throws INTs, Peyton throws ducks, Brady throws 8-yders and whines, etc. etc. So if the QB yells at a OG for missing a block and then overthrows a WR, that ignites resentment and the idea that the QB is not one of the guys. Yes Tannehill should be more of a cheerleader type and more inspirational somehow, but I don’t want him berating guys on the jumbotron.

I think Ryan is NOT stupid. Or blind. I think sometimes some guy was supposed to pick up those blitzers (like RB Miller) and they didn’t and left Ryan exposed when he thought he had a bit more time. For all of Tannehill’s 586 attempts last season, he had an Accuracy Percentage of 80.8 percent. Only five quarterbacks had a higher percentage than him and he was one of only six to cross 80 percent for the full season (You can find Accuracy Percentages for all quarterbacks in the Pre-Snap Reads Quarterback Catalogue). Despite being accurate on over 80 percent of his pass attempts, Tannehill completed just 61.9 percent of his passes. This was because his receivers failed at the catch point 63 times.

Only Aaron Rodgers had more Failed Receptions tied to him last year, he had 64, and Cam Newton, the only other quarterback to reach 63, was the only quarterback to lose more yards (not including YAC) than him. Newton lost an incredible 836 yards to his receivers while Tannehill lost 717. No other quarterback lost more than 635 yards on Failed Receptions.

  59. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

another factor is drops … here is a quote:
So why didn’t we see this improvement in Tannehill’s deep passing? The same reason we presumed he was a bad deep thrower before last year.

Newton lost an incredible 836 yards to his receivers while Tannehill lost 717. No other quarterback lost more than 635 yards on Failed Receptions.

Newton was so far ahead of everyone because he was extremely accurate and his receivers were terrible in one of the most aggressive offenses in the league. His 90 attempts that traveled at least 20 yards past the line of scrimmage led the league. Tannehill only had 68 20+ yard throws, eight quarterbacks had more, but he had 11 Failed Receptions on 20+ yard throws.

That means he had at least 11 accurate passes where the ball travelled 20 or more yards and his receivers turned the play into an incompletion/interception. The exact numbers Tannehill lost are 11 completions for 295 yards and two touchdowns. Those are minimums because we can’t project YAC, but even discounting YAC, adding those numbers to Tannehill’s actual production would have been huge.

  60. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

we are talking about 6th and 7th rounders guys

what do you care if they are LBs or TEs

the first 4 rounds of the draft are what matters in terms of our current roster
rounds 5-7 – I think you are just hoping to find a gem
you can load up at DBs, LBs, OL or whatever in hopes of finding some talent

What I’m trying to do is address those 4 positions in the first 4 rounds (OL, RB, CB and LB)
to me that is what matters

then after that – its kind of like – I like these players so

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      Also
Kenau Neal a S I like went off the board before I picked in the 7th round –
but he would have been my pick over the LB or TE there

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

When I did the Fanspeak draft yesterday I got lucky and had Neal in the 7th I believe. But I think he’ll go in the 5th during the real draft.

  61. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I don’t think you can ask a QB to be more than 80% accurate. There’s pressure from rushers and bad weather and even tightness on national TV to factor in as well. These are not friendly college ProDay throwing numbers. That’s 80% with NFL bullets flying and Bill Bellicheck coaching at you as well.

  62. So, based on what some are saying, Tannehill can play as well as he did last season as long as we have a good run game and better pass protection and we’ll be able to win more games than we have the last 4 yrs.

  63. and, I’m not saying the same td/int ratio or anything like that. What I’m saying is if everything else falls into place than what you’re saying is Tannehill will get the job done because he’s good enough to get it done as long as the pass protection and run blocking is there. So, his numbers should go up just because of that.

I wonder if we trade a player in return or a damn draft pick?

GD you are the guy that searches for the dented cans of spaghetti O’s so you get them at a discount arent ya?

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Yeah, all teams do it. Nobody can select the top guy at a said position whenever they want to. Depends on where you’re at at the time. I’m not a fan of getting injured players too much, if that’s what ya mean. But Fuller’s was a likely 1st round guy. His meniscus tear was early in the season, so he should be ok soon enough.

  73. D's avatar D says:

You want a really good explanation of a solid logical mentality to the trade we made, this from Gase’s own mouth, sets very well with me.

“I was fine with it because we got two starters and we’re going to add a third at No. 13,” Gase said. “So I look at it [as] we moved back five spots and got three starters, so I was all for it. I know this, one guy is not going to change our team, so adding three starters for us is a big deal.”

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Was exactly my contention from day 1. The only issue for me was health, and both are said to be fully healthy now. Both are young 26 7 28. Alonso was a former 2nd rounder in 2013. It’s almost like getting to extra draft picks that are from BYU….lol…but they already have shown NFL production as starters.
The thing is that the guys that are being targeted on the war room board are likely thought to still be available around #13 anyways.
      Win Win.

  74. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

No thoughts from anyone on my post above about the Phins still in conversation with teams about trading for one of their RB’s before the draft???

Anyways, as I stated above. I like the idea of Spencer Ware. You want physical, there ya go. LSU tough!
….or Stevan Ridley also from LSU is still avail as a UFA….or go smaller back with Hillman a former 3rd rd pick & now UFA. Screw Denver!

    • Jamar Taylor to Philly straight up for Ryan Matthews.

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

That could work since they got rid of Maxwell, but they also got rid of DeMarco Murray, so Mathews is their lead back right now. If Phiily takes Zeke @ #8 I could see it happening, but not until…too risky for them.

      • D's avatar D says:

Matthews stays injured, but Taylor isnt exactly doing much for us either but Matthews is fairly expensive given his relaibility. Arian Foster would probably be a cheaper great upside, same injury risk as Matthews, Cut Taylor and put it towards what we pay for Foster. Another option would be to trade with the Texans for Alfred Blue. With Miller in Houston now, blue might be an expendable item and he is that downhill runner we need.

      • my understanding is Matthews is still out there by Philly even after getting rid of Murray and I didn’t see anything that said they changed their mind since then. The new regime doesn’t seem to like either of them.

  75. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    I don’t want a vet RB

    I want a rookie
Dumbest thing a team can do is overpay for a RB

You can basically draft and reload RBs

I wouldn’t mind seeing Alex Collins, Devontae Booker or Jordan Howard becomes Dolphins

  76. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    then again
we can hire this vet and I’m okay with it

  77. Ryan Matthews would actually come relatively cheap b/c his bonus money would escalate to this yr with a trade and take Phins off the hook for most of the guaranteed money. In essence, Phins should only be on the hook for around $1M of his contract this yr and that’s it. He’s definitely one of the better vet options out there and wouldn’t cost much even if we extended him. I’d pay him the same thing we offered Anderson.

  78. thing is, you’re not necessarily looking for a vet to come in and be the #1 guy in the running game. You’re looking for a guy who can compliment what we’ve got in Ajayi and also add that veteran presence to the roster. And, you’re looking for a vet who can still get the job done. So, you put Matthews in a situation like that where he doesn’t need to carry the load and you’re reducing his snap count he can be much more effective.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

That’s exactly why Gase & the Phins seem to still be looking for a RB prior to the draft where they’re magically delicious. 😉

      • Unfortunately, even with the vets, you’re limited to what’s out there. When you look at the list of UFA’s you may as well just wait b/c most of them will probably be available later and when you look at the majority of guys you can trade for most of them will probably be available after the cuts too. Guys like Blue and West aren’t necessarily guys you trade for right now. Once the cuts are made you could find them looking for jobs.

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

There’s that too, and that would depend on ‘if’ we draft a RB before say the 5th round.
When you say West, which West, Terrence or Charcandrick?

      • Charcandrick. And West was a rb I had as and udfa target for the Phins two yrs ago but I wouldn’t trade for him. If he became available after the cuts I may take a shot at him but that also depends on who else was available.

  79. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

As I said above, you can’t just say, Oh, we can draft and reload RB’s. It’s not that simple.
Yes the RB position value has gone down some over the years due to the ever passing league. But there are far more JAG’s or worse around the league, than there are good solid 1st & 2nd string backs!

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

a lot of those JAGS are the guys you will be looking at if you bring in a vet

      the NFL churns out RBs
some of the vets that are out there are spent

I really don’t want to trade for some one

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

It’s knowing who can fit. That’s where we got to trust Gase for now with his input to Tbomb/Grier.

The consensus was Wright ran the 40 in the mid-4.8s (4.84/4.85) though some teams did clock him at 4.79. I’m told his position work was solid, but nothing outstanding. Teams are concerned about his body type, as Wright has a stocky upper frame but thin lower body.

Wright is definitely a leader on the field and teammates are drawn to him; intangibles NFL decision-makers will have to factor in. The question is, how early do you draft a 239-pound linebacker who runs in the 4.8s and can’t cover?
