If there was a unit out there on our defense that made our LB’s look like they weren’t the worst unit of our defense, it was the secondary, more specifically, the CB’s. Even the once vaunted Brent Grimes had his ups and downs, and there were enough downs (wife Miko included) to wave goodbye to #21, and really leave this CB corps very thin. We got our starter in the Byron Maxwell/ Kiko Alonso trade, in which we swapped first RD placement with the Eagles, moving down from #8, to #13.

At the moment, before the draft, we basically have 2 starters, Byron Maxwell, and it’s clear he prefers the right side of the field, so we’ll have to wait and see how this shakes out, but either way, we have a starter on the perimeter, and we have good ole Bobby McCain, who most likely is our nickel CB who will man the slot WR. Behind Maxwell, we have Jamar Taylor, who has yet to show he can handle the rigors of a full season, let alone a full season as a starter. He has shown flashes of being a legit player, but he has also been roasted and toasted and simply ineffective. We have the promising young WR convert to CB Tony Lippett, who brings some size to this unit at 6’2″ 192. He showed some potential last season, but it’s hard to say how far along this conversion at the moment, and if he’s ready to assume a starting role. My guess is he’s still a work in progress. We also have CB/S Walt Aikens, who also has good size at 6’1″ 205, and he will be working at both CB and S in training camp and pre season games, and I suppose they will try to lock down where he’s best.
Although I’m not at all pleased with the depth at LB, certainly not the 3 they intend at the moment to line up opening day if no further moves are made, Jenkins WOLB, Alonso MLB and Misi SLB. If the only change we’re going to make to a unit that couldn’t get out of their own way, but gladly stepped aside for opposing RB’s and TE’s is Kiko Alonso, who has yet to regain the form (and health) he enjoyed his rookie season in Buffalo, which now is 3 years removed at the start of the new season. I know some of you, and you know who you are, feel comfortable with this setup, but I remember how awful we were last year, and simply swapping Alonso for Sheppard doesn’t cut it for me.
Back to the CB’s. Here are some of the guys available to us in the 2016 NFL Draft that can come in and be a perimeter starter right away, which is precisely what we need!

There’s a chance that Florida CB Vernon Hargreaves III will still be there at pick #13. Hargreaves may be the best all around CB in this draft. He’s not a big CB for today’s standards at 5’10” 204, and he’s not blazing fast either, running a pedestrian 4.5 in the 40. He is however, a true cover corner, and he has elite skills in that regard. He is a very competitive player, and he would surely be starting for the Dolphins this season if we draft him. Hargreaves 39″ vertical is outstanding, so he can get up there to compete for the ball with bigger receivers. His 3.98 in the short shuttle shows he has that quick twitch speed and burst, a must for a good CB, perimeter or slot.

Clemson’s Mackensie Alexander is another possibility. Alexander is a fiery, confident player at CB who was rarely challenged. You might be concerned that he has zero INT’s, but when a guy doesn’t get thrown at very often, that sometimes is the result. Mackensie is similar in size to Hargreaves at 5’10″190. Again, not one of those big CB’s, and he his pro day numbers are also similar to Hargreaves, 4.47 40, 37.5″ vertical, a 4.21 short shuttle, which is not as quick as Hargreaves.

I know some folks on this blog (and others) are in love with this CB, Houston’s William Jackson III. Jackson is a little taller than the previous 2 at an even 6’0″ 189. A little more of a wiry frame than the previous 2, but a very good prospect nonetheless. Very smooth operator, Jackson also has the elite speed for a CB. His 4.37 at the combine was one of the best, but oddly enough, at his pro day, he ran the short shuttle at 4.32, which seems odd, considering his fast 40 time, and his impressive 6.86 in the cones drill. Jackson led all of college football in passes defended, with 5 INT’s and 23 pass break ups. Impressive!
There are a few other prospects that will be in play, but in my mind, these are the 3 guys that I think we might target to be our starter. Other CBs we may be interested in are Miami’s Artie Burns, Baylor’s Xavien Howard, Alabama’s Cyrus Jones, Northern Iowa’s Deiondre Hall, and Virginia’s Maurice Canady. There are actually more, but these are the ones that hit me today. Feel free to discuss and add more to the list!

Mike, or you can listen on WFAN on the radio or online. After all it was a radio show. 🙂

Mark Messier said something tonight on The Mike and The Mad Dog Reunion show tonight that hit me. Paraphrasing – “The best coaches are the ones who let the players be themselves and lead.”
This mock I went BPA literally. Using the Fanspeak Composite Bigboard I just clicked whoever was at the very top in each round without consideration for position need, injuries or red flags. I think because we have so many perceived needs I am actually not displeased with this one.

Maybe we could pick Ragland and trade him to New Orleans for Stephone Anthony
Now I knew that guy was gonna be a player in the lead up to that draft.
The Saints were a bad defense. 😉
Yep, early on when CBSSports.com had him as a 3rd rd prospect I said he was the best MLB in the draft.
It’s also one of the reasons I can’t get into Ragland at #13. I might have a tough time taking Anthony that high and I don’t think Ragland is as good as Anthony. I’m a body type guy. Anthony has the leaner look to him and Ragland has that stubby look to him. I also look at Dansby as kind of a guide and don’t see close to the same player. Nope, for me he’s got to be similar to what I see in either of these guys and I don’t see it. He’s a steady player and when he hits you know it but there’s nothing that jumps off the screen when you watch him where you say “wow” look at that play.
Mike. I think Bobby Valentine had a few scotch’s and some coke. LOL
So we want a LB from the Saints who was on a defense that was worst in PA and 2nd worst in rush, pass and total yards defense. LOL
I’m sure he made all his tackles at the LOS and or for losses. Please!!! LOL
and how does the fact that a team’s defense has bad stats take away from one player who’s the best middle linebacker to come out of the draft last season?
Yeah he was awesome. He made a huge impact. I guess being last is a good attribute. LOL
well, we could have a LB that was one of the top MLB’s in the league last yr playing with a shit defense or we could have a LB from college who benefited from being behind the best defensive line in college football for the past 2 yrs. It was just a joke!

I liked Stephone Anthony in last years draft. I was hoping to get him in the 2nd RD, but the Saints grabbed him early. That being said, yes, he’s a little faster than Ragland, but Ragland is still a better prospect than Anthony, because Ragland is a better tackler.
Nice job on the article Mike E. CB LB and DE I think are big holes for us to fill. I just have a sinking feeling when I think about this upcoming season
Thanks Ken
Tim
I didn’t notice that Valentine was sloshed. He’s always been a little goofy anyway, but I was tired when he finally got on. I saw Van Gundy too, but I think I fell asleep somewhere during the time he was on. It was a good show, I thought it was pretty cool.
Ken
We do have 7 DE’s on the depth chart, but no clear winner to start opposite Williams. We need to draft one possibly for now and the future, but it’s not a hole like CB is. LB isn’t a hole either, just in my mind I want better.
I know a few of you will be happy with this, IF, you put any stock in these reports . . .

G’d moanin lugnuts. Did we trade Tanny to Cleveland yet?
No, but the Broncos said we could have CJ Anderson for Tannehill
LOL, I bet they did, and they’d win back to back super bowls then. Instead they’re still trying to get the ‘Sniffer to lower his contract before they trade for him. They’ll also likely draft a QB in the late 1st or maybe 2nd rd.
It’s an interesting situation for the Kaepersniffer. He gets paid well if he stays in SF ($11M), but if he gets traded to Denver, they will surely renegotiate his contract, but he will have a legit shot to go to the SB.
Yeah, he’s got some decisions to make, but SF could also be bluffing & end up keeping him if Kelly thinks he can win with him.
Either way Mike, I see SF as being a disaster in 2016, as will the Rams. So the division will come down to Seattle & Zona again.
I agree GDP – The Niners will be bottom feeders again, unless Kelly is a QB whisperer
He’s shown he is not.
NJ.com’s Mark Eckel spoke with one NFL scout who believes Florida’s Vernon Hargreaves is the best CB prospect in the 2016 NFL Draft.
“He’s not as athletic as Ramsey, but he’s a smoother cover guy than Ramsey,” the scout says.
Anyone here think we take Derrick Henry in the 2nd if he’s still there?
No. I don’t see it.Not the type of RB we’ll likely be looking for. I’d rather wait till 3rd & get his teammate Drake.
Anyone here? lol
So I’m a nobody, gee thanks 😦
I typed that before I saw you responded silly! I actually wasn’t asking if you wanted Derrick Henry, I was asking if you think we might take him.
Something to consider for those championing certain RB:
IS that a subtle plug for Paul Perkins?
That makes Perkins, Marshall, & Ervin more attractive.
Morning people….as for a RB take one in the later rounds of talent there for that. I watched Henry and was disappointed.
He’s 6’3, that worries me some. Not many Eddie George’s out there, and he doesn’t run like Eddie.
Good morning or Good evening Lee
What do you think of Bindi running off & eloping with that bloke? Her mum seems pissed.
Chiefs are trading Kniles Davis…..wonder if it’s Miami who’s picking him up?
Could be, but 2 RB’s who have injury question marks?
I really don’t question Ajayi & I think Davis is more that West & Ware made him expendable. Davis would also offer STs return value. Once again we don’t know where he’s getting traded to yet.
@AllbrightNFL: I had heard Miami & Philly inquiring about Knile Davis, doesnt mean they were the only teams.
@RapSheet: True. Davis made the request weeks ago, Chiefs on the case. RT @JasonColeBR: Hearing #Chiefs working on a trade of RB Knile Davis.
Chiefs just signed both Spencer Ware & Charcandrick West to extensions. With Jamal Charles back, it’s likely Knile is out.
Davis is young 24yo & former 3rd Rd pick. He’s in last year of rookie deal @ $675K, he can be a KO returner, scored a TD as a returner in 2013,14.
But he’s fumble prone & his avg yard per carry sucks.
Sweet! Much better than tweets of some guy who’s an UDFA at best & how he ran a 4.8 40. 😉
Interesting camera angle . . .
Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole reports the Broncos want Colin Kaepernick to take around a $5 million pay cut.
Set to earn $11.9 million this season, the Broncos want Kaepernick to reduce his salary to “approximately” $7 million. Considering his contract is set to fully guarantee Friday, he has little reason to take that big of a pay cut unless he is dead set on getting out of San Francisco. All signs point to Kaepernick sticking with the 49ers for another season.
He could make more money in the future though if he has a successful season with the Broncos.
Good point…but might be all about the benjamins.
I haven’t seen Herd in quite some time. Anyone see her around lately?

And both those teams probably hung up the phone if the Chiefs asked for anything higher than a 7th RDer (value of a guy about to be cut if no one offers up a trade).
They can’t demand much for him, but they can choose to hang onto him with minimal ramifications. He still has high value to them as a returner and he has a dirt cheap contract which would allow them to bring him to camp w/ no concern.
As a return man? any team can just draft Morgan Burns with the pick they will give up for that 😛
We can draft Cyrus Jones as a depth CB and return man.

Well I didn’t get selected for Grand Jury Duty which would have been every Wednesday for the next 17 weeks. I pleaded my case to the judge (work related) and he said I’ll see what I can do if there are lesser hardship cases but they selected the two pools of 23 jurors before it got back to me so I’m FREE!!!!
This was in Newark which is a shit hole. Took me forever to get the fuck out of there because of traffic and nonsense. Sips a cold one in celebration. 🙂
LOL – Congrats on your escape!
Thanks!
lol
The area around Newark is a strange place.
Harrison is ok I guess but the other side (Irvington) is super ghetto and dangerous.
Newark is huge. You have industrial areas and downtown and then suburban areas you wouldn’t even know are in Newark. I live Northwest of there but in the same county so that’s where I get summoned. This was the 2nd time. Last time I just escaped a child molestation case after sitting in the pool for 2.5 days. I raised my hand when asked if I’d have an issue with this case and was excused eventually. Ugh!
Ok, I’m back. Did we trade Tanny for Knile Davis yet?
No? I guess the Chiefs are still pondering if it’s a good trade & probably wants a draft pick from us in addition.
@alexmarvez: New @MiamiDolphins RB Isaiah Pead was 2012 2nd-round @RamsNFL pick. Spent time with @steelers in ’15.
I guess the Chiefs didn’t want Tanny then.
A guy with some experience. No real body of work. He’s fast though.
GDP
Tanny and our 2017 3rd RD pick. 🙂
Dolphins signed RB Isaiah Pead.
Pead has two offensive touches since the end of the 2013 season. Even for the RB-desperate Dolphins, he’s a camp body with almost no shot at cracking the 53-man roster. An absolute mega-bust as a 2012 second rounder, Pead has never scored an NFL touchdown.
______________________________
Scratching my head??? Why not Hillman, Blount, Bradshaw, Jackson, Fred or Steven, Pierre Thomas, Hightower, Ridley, Reggie Bush, Bernard Pierce??? All FA’s???
I think this is more like competition for Williams and like Grier said he wants to go into the draft totally open, not having pressing needs.
Well Gase just covered the needs for a bust camp body that he’ll have fun cutting in the first round of roster trims in pre-season.
Al
Is Irvington considered part of Newark?
No but it has the same ghetto thing going on. You see beautiful old Victorians and souped up cars driving around that were stolen from each other and in surrounding neighborhoods. It’s a strange place. You don’t want to be lost there at night.
I nearly Pead my pants when I saw this signing! smh
GD, Pead returns kicks too. I don’t think a trade happened though. I’m not seeing it anywhere.
wasn’t a trade, he was walking the streets as a FA that nobody wanted.
Okay Armando is reporting it through Marvez. It’s not a trade. I guess I confused that with the Davis rumors.
Armando Salguero @ArmandoSalguero 4m4 minutes ago
Isaiah Pead signing changes nothing as search for more running back talent will continue in Miami.
Armando Salguero @ArmandoSalguero 6m6 minutes ago
League source confirms RB Isaiah Pead is signing with the dolphins. First reported by @alexmarvez.
If he shows something in camp great, if not no biggie.
Gase might be using him as a learning tool.
Training Camp 2016:
Gase: Ok, listen up guys. This is Isabout Pead. Ok Pead, take the handoff from Logan & run.
Gase: ok ok, you guys see that? Don’t do that! That’s not how you Fkin run the ball.
Gase: ok Pead, take the handoff again and run….that’s it, keep running, keep going, (yelling) more, keep going, don’t stop.
Gase: ok, good, he’s gone out of sight now.
Gase: (on radio) yes, camp security, don’t let that guy in the )) jersey back into the facility, Thanks!
Isaiah Pead. Well, when you have a stable of horses, not all of them are pretty . . .
Is why I jumped on Piggy a couple weeks ago when we lost out on CJ Anderson after losing out on Millertime.
He kept repeating that common misnomer that, “Meh, why pay for a vet RB when the draft is full of them. Just draft one and we’re set”
Knile Davis (former 3rd Rd)
Isiah Pead (former 2nd Rd)
Those are just 2 very recent examples that RB’s don’t grow on trees just because it’s a more passing league.
LMAO, perfect rendition of a busted RB!
Is that Vaginafeet DT3 ?
I like signing guys named after urine
They have something to prove
speakin of the devil, err Pig 😉
Tim
I used to work in Livingston, and I drove past Irvington on the TPKE on the way home. I didn’t think it was Newark
Livingston, Roseland and parts of West Orange are really nice. But really close to ghettos as well. Most of NJ is like that. We’re a really populated state, I believe the most per square mile in the country.
No doubt. Heavily populated for such a small area
LOL @ Piggy!
Relax GDP – He’s just another camp body, no harm no foul. If he doesn’t work out, he gets cut. We’re till looking for a RB
I’m calm, what makes you think I’m not. I know 90 guys go into camp & only 53 come out. Thundedome!
GD is looking at this like Pead is our main man. LOL
It’s a signing that goes on all the time that isn’t a big deal. If he shows something great, if not he gets cut and nobody cares. LOL
Oh you weak minded peasants. My beef was from all the other UFA’s I listed above, he’s the one we sign.
I know we’ll be looking at other RB’s & for sure drafting one too.
Here was Pead’s combine profile.
http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/isaiah-pead?id=2532926
I view him as a KR/STs and depth back. He was a former 2nd rd pick in 2012. He obviously hasn’t impressed much. He gets a chance to compete on his 3rd team.
You bothered to look that up? That took more time than even his agent spends on him….lol
I wanted to see why he was a 2nd rd pick. It’s not that difficult. Type in Isaiah Pead NFL Combine. Whoa!!! That was rough. LOL
Like I said, his agent doesn’t call him anymore. Pead probably called him when he read the rumor twitter….lol
Tim
You didn’t have to fill out a 3 page survey as to why you were interested in Isaiah Pead? lol
no but the Phins GM probably did for physiological aptitude reasons.
I say I peed
You say you pooed
Why judge?
Let’s not make a big deal about this signing
That’s what I’m saying. We spent about 4 minutes on Sam Young. LOL
GDP – I am not a pheasant!
Gase in wonderment as to why they got Pead on.
RB could definitely be in play first 2 days of the draft. We’ll probably sign a shit load of UDFAs too. Then start the thinning out process.
Zeke rumors looking stronger, but I doubt he makes it to us. So I see a day 3 pick of a RB. Hopefully not till the 3rd Rd. Drake (he could be a better Percy Harvin).
Most things are better than Percy harvin
Harvin is great when he’s healthy enough to play.
Mike, we have 9 DEs on the roster not counting Jordan. McCain will work at DE now like Campbell did with him under the same DL coach in Terrell Williams. M. Williams, Wake and Branch are part of the rotation. We’ll probably keep two more. Unless Wake isn’t good to go but reports seem to be positive as of now.
Adam Schefter ✔ @AdamSchefter
Former Buccaneers RB Bobby Rainey visited Dolphins today as Miami continues reviewing options.
This seems to be after getting Pead on. I rather get Rainey’d on.
He was a RB my FFL was looking at as a filler down the stretch when he played well in some games a few years ago. I’m not going to go crazy about these signings either way. It’s a depth roster building move to create competition in TC and not be void of players at specific positions heading into the draft.
Gas is peading on your leg and telling you its Rainey.
LOL
Pead on the carpet, ball’s out.
Wow! Someone doesn’t like someone. LOL
LMAO, I’m having fun with it. Slow day at the orifice.
Pead actually jarred the ball loose from the LB who had just made a Int on that play.
Bolt, yeah, that’s what happened. You can tell by his body & hand placement…not! What are you his agent? 😉
I like Alex Collins in the 3rd round. He and Ajayi could be a solid combo.
Collins or Drake, I like them both around the 3rd. Good call.
I like Drake too. He’s an explosive player you can do some different things with – KR, RB and WR.
Why a made the ‘could turn out to be better than Percy Harvin’
Let Ajayi be the between the tackle bull, & Drake the change up back. Drake would also be a great weapon with them both on the field together. Can run a lot of different things from there, to confuse the defenses.
Seems right up a creative play caller’s alley.
I like Christian Westerman in the 3rd RD, kick ass OG
I think we go OL by the 2nd round.
We could be looking at DEF/OL, DEF/OL, RB first 3 rounds.
Could be. If Ronnie Stanley falls to #13, he could very well be the pick
He may go in the 2nd Mike.

Insane to spend a early pick on a kicker. Has the NFL not learned from Nugent?
The Phins are not close to a super bowl. Gase’s words. So to take a kicker in anything under the 6th rd is STUPID with a capital S! 🙂

I guess you don’t get my humor. I find people’s reactions funnier than the prop we’re talking about. LOL
@Rand_Getlin: I’m told RB Daniel Thomas has signed with the #Dolphins.
Now he’s really DT3.
Cause you’re once, twice, 3 times a Dolphin . . .
We’re accumulating former 2nd RD pick RB’s
Honey, the low class neighbors are fighting in the street again.
Australia?
The DT3 signing is a head scratcher at first, but he’s not worse than Damien Williams running the ball, if he just had average vision he could be an ok back.
DT3 is really not too unlike the kid in Jacksonville, although he weighs about 30 lbs more. Both he and Denard Robinson show some flashes, but it’s hard to convert a QB into a natural RB.
He was used as a Wildcat QB at KSU, and a running QB in high school, big difference between an actual college QB like Denard.
Lol, well now that we’bve solved the RB issue, CB first two rounds?
I know you’re just joking, but I don’t expect either RB we signed today to make the final 53, but you never know.
I am really glad we are trying to find the best low cost options on the market for our 90. I agree they probably won’t make the roster but that’s a good thing. Means we are progressing forward past earlier mistakes.
We should givr up 3 draft picks just for old times sake
Steve
It doesn’t matter, they’re similar in the fact that they both have talent, but both lack that instinctiveness to just hit the hole, they both stutter before they go. DT is more physical, because he’s stronger and bigger, but I had Robinson in FF so I watched him, and he does remind me of DT3.
Troll Game on
https://twitter.com/theflyingpig44/status/715695356495921152
He doesn’t even show good vision in his highlight reel, but yeah he’s elite!
Daniel Thomas is back woohoo SB here we come
We lost Miller but we have DT 3
Now if only Pat White come back !!!
Woop woop
LOL
Do you think picking up these guys that won’t make the final 53 is an attempt to make other teams beleive we won’t draft a RB?
I don’t see the point of signing these guys in April unless it’s some sort of smokescreen
Even if it is – who will believe these guys are our future
I think these moves are odd
What are they thinking?
I think it means we are desperate to draft a RB
The only logic of the moves I can think of
Is that we did not any to appear desperate to draft a RB
I think Tannenbaum is dying to spend some money but just can’t spend big. Undrafted FAs? You guys aren’t in the picture. Maybe he really wants the experience that studs like DT3 bring.
LOL @ resigning DT3.
I think we’re now in the business of acquiring cheap talent, and would be pleased if any of these acquisitions pay big dividends.
I think we are now in the process of sucking
the chances of one of these guys even making the roster is remote
I don’t even think these guys are in the maybe we squeeze some juice out of that lemon catageory
If they were on the depth chart in opening days it reveals weakness in your team
These are not cheap vet moves
These are sign to cut them moves
Why are we making those moves?
Cause the same guy who signed Mark Sanchez to one of the worst contracts in league history is our GM
With DT3 on the roster the Pats are getting nervous
Why, they don’t have Revis 😉
I don’t ever remember signing “camp bodies” on the last day of March
All these guys are available after the draft and probably into July
There is no rush to sign a few RBs who would be available after the draft

I think we’re now in the business of acquiring cheap talent,
so you are basically saying…….the fins have adopted the ffr strategy of finding those to perform
They are hoping something sticks. Now here’s the question. Wer these guys that much cheaper than just giving Anderson 2 more million a year? You get really good talent for $20…or you make up the difference with DT3, Pee, and other garbage backs.
Maybe it’s an Aprils Fools day joke
“You see Mike, with the money we saved by changing to more energy efficient light bulbs we were able to sign Daniel Thomas”.
Looking at that roo fighting it’s easy to see how the sport of kick boxing got started.
Who would’ve thunk it 😉

Good stat from @omarkelly on @joerroseshow: When Albert, Pouncey and J’Wuan James start on Dolphins, OL, they’re 6-1. But only 7 starts
The Cheats are signing camp fodder now, why can’t we?
That’s 3 first round draft picks on the OL.
We also have 3 on the DL, a QB, a WR, and …?
Who’s our 3rd dline 1st rounder?
Jordan dah!

I think we are now in the process of sucking
ken,
i very much respect you and your level of intelligence. you seem like a very smart guy. but what the hell do you mean by ‘we are not in the process of sucking’ where the hell have you been? this process has been going on for a decade.
Need help at cornerback.
Need help at linebacker.
Need offensive line help.
ETC, ETC, ETC
We here or say the same thing every year and have been saying it for some time now but there’s ONE thing the team can do this year that will make all the difference in the world and it doesn’t include any of those things above.
Run the frickin football. That’s all they need to do. Have a commitment to the run and run it effectively. Why? Because one thing is definitely for sure; it doesn’t matter if the offensive line gives Tannehill better pass protection if he’s throwing the ball 37 times a game because if he is, we aren’t going to win.
We need to run the ball more and limit the number of times Tannehill has to throw the ball to mid 20’s at the most because he’s not capable of putting the team on his back and winning games. If we have a commitment to the run and are good at it our offense will be better just because we take the pressure of having to carry the team off of Tannehill.
We don’t need the guy who can carry a team on his back. Brady didn’t do it his first few SBs, neither did Rapistberger in his first, Manning, Elway, Wilson, etc, etc, etc.
Teams with the best defense and running game seem to win the vast majority of games. It’s just the QB position gets all the media attention.
Right on Newage. Teams that play sound defense & can run the ball when they want & need to, will always make the QB look better. It calls the dogs off of him & he doesn’t have to press the ball desperately trying to make something happen all the time!!
