A “D” Miami Dolphins Draft Evaluation

by D

Let me begin by saying that draft strategies are as varied as women’s underpants, and likewise, some are more appealing to others, especially given the variety of women that wear them. I have my particular views of what is a strong draft strategy but I do not, in the least, feel it is the one the Dolphins use, nor is it better than another. I do say this, however, to point out that my evaluation is based on how I think they did, and is partially based upon my own beliefs.

Let me describe then, my belief in drafting. I am not a pure BPA person; I also am not a vertical big board person. I like to combine a few aspects of BPA, horizontal big board and player specific targeting approaches. I feel it is a good strategy for getting guys you want, and yet having the flexibility for not over drafting and with preferences towards accumulating picks over sacrificing them unnecessarily.

Now that you have an understanding of my philosophy, let me begin the draft breakdown.

Round 1, pick 13:  Mississippi OT Laremy Tunsil  6’5″  310

NCAA FOOTBALL: OCT 31 Ole Miss at Auburn

Tunsil was my highest rate player and only one really close was Ramsey. Any other draft where QB wasn’t of such desperation would have landed him as the No. 1 overall selection.  The pick to me, was BPA, it was a target player (if you lived in the land of make-believe where you really thought this was possible), it was a need position, and it was a gift from the football gods. I can’t see how this is anything other than A+, unless you are a worrier, then you might bump it down to A. Final assessment A+.

Round 2, pick 38:  Baylor CB  Xavien Howard  6’0″  201

Howard

First let me set things straight, I like the guy we picked. There had been a few CB taken early so there was some sense of urgency in making this selection, though I do not agree that the urgency required a trade up. I can’t really argue if the guy would have been selected between the 4 picks we moved up to get him, because no one really knows, but I feel certain it would have been unlikely we would have been jumped by another team to take him. I also feel pretty certain that players like TJ Green, and Sean Davis offered equally rate CB prospects, same scheme fit, and Green in particular has better measurable like 40 time. I had them all pretty equally graded. Due to this I give the player selection a B+, but what we gave up to get him makes the pick a B- overall.

Round 3, pick 73:  Alabama RB  Kenyan Drake  6’1″  210

Kenyan Drake

Kenyan Drake is a beast. I know people think he is a scat back, or a 3rd down guy, but he is going to be a LOT more. He’s pretty comparable to Lamar Miller, but is a better receiver, statements about he cant run between the tackles is not accurate, he wasn’t use that way at Alabama but that’s because Alabama always had Henry and before that, Lacy. Drake was used as a change of pace guy there, but I don’t see that same thing for him in Gase’s system, which is a lot different from Saban’s. I think this is a perfect fit for us, and it was great talent at the right round. I think this is an A+ selection.

Round 3, pick 86:  Rutgers WR  Leonte Carroo   6’0″ 211

NFL: Cleveland Browns at Baltimore Ravens

Ah, another trade up. So as I mentioned, not a big fan of giving up picks to get a play, unless it’s really justified. Player we picked is a great selection, so let’s analyze the trade. We gave up a 6th round pick, but more importantly a 3rd and a 4th rounder in 2017 to move up and take Caroo. I had Pharaoh Cooper ranked higher than Caroo, and to be honest with the way they play, there is a really strong comparison to one another. I also had Demarcus Robinson rated pretty close, though I do think Caroo gets the edge as far as play demeanor. Robinson can half ass plays sometimes, and doesn’t play aggressive. His physical skills are better but Caroo is probably the better fit. I give the pick a B+, but with what we gave up in the trade, im dropping the pick to a C+ grade.

Round 6 pick 186:  Texas Tech WR/RB  Jakeem Grant

Jakeem

Ok so I’m stuck between the nickname jitter bug and tater tot, for Grant, maybe jitter tot? At first glance you look at it and go, WTF 5’6 really but then you turn on the highlights and interviews and you go, wow this kid has spunk, he’s a baller. Quietly I have found myself loving this pick and the player. We did trade up once again to get this pick after previously trading back with NE. We swapped 6ths 196 for 186 and gave up an early 7th to move up to get him. Its hard to bag on late round trades as you are obviously maneuvering around to get a guy who probably adds special teams ability, and maybe if you are lucky becomes a backup/role player. In this guy we got a potential ST ace in the return game and a weapon on offense. Trading up to get a 1st year contributor, is an A+ move. Given the potential of this pick I see it as an A+ grade.

Round 6 pick 204:  Penn State S/CB  Jordan Lucas  6’0″ 201

jordanlucas

I had to go back and watch some film on Lucas to be honest, since I didn’t remember being wow’d by him early on. He is aggressive as hell; he looks to lay a hit on people when they catch it. His zone skills are pretty solid, and I didn’t see him in press much, so kind of hard to say. Guys who play like that however usually are going to be solid press guys though. He played both S and CB, and I think for us he could wind up in either spot. He doesn’t really have elite ball-skills, but he fights through receptions, stripping a lot out and he puts hits on guys that jar’s the ball out.  I give this pick a B+, because I like the upside and I think it’s a regime pick and fits our scheme solidly no matter which position he winds up at.

Round 7 pick 223:  Western Kentucky QB  Brandon Doughty  6’3″ 213

Doughty

Is this a pick to threaten Tannehill? No not really. Should Tanny feel pressure to improve because of this pick, I think a little. I like the pick because he does represent someone who has shown in CUSA to be a standout player. He seems to have limitations however, that I don’t think you can think of him as a potential franchise guy, but I also wouldn’t count him out of the possibility. I think this selection signifies an approach by our team to always be looking to add talent at any position, even if its one that’s seemingly secure. I think as a 7th round selection the pick was a very solid one, accomplishing 2 things, an current upgrade to the backup QB spot, and an outside chance to develop a guy who eventually starts, either for us or traded to another team. Grade B.

Round 7 pick 231:  UCLA TE  Thomas Duarte  6’2″ 231

Memphis v UCLA

The pick of Duarte is a somewhat rarity in the 7th round. 7th rounders aren’t supposed to be guy who contribute right away, they are at best special-teamers that you kinda hope after a few years can be counted on as a backup, or small contributor. Most 7th rounders have little chance to make it on the team long term. Durate though I think is a guy we see make a contribution first year. It may not be gaudy numbers, but I think he comes in and gets exposure right off. I think there are things they can do with him on the field and packages they can unlock with him they couldn’t without him.  I think he and Jitter Tot, are kind of in the same boat, sub package players, ST contributors and mismatch guys in different packages. I give this pick a A+ as well.

I think our draft was a really nice one, I don’t think it was as good as some of the other teams, but it was certainly better than most I think. Overall I give our draft a grade of B+, we filled a lot of holes, we got some talented players, and the only real complaint I have is the trades, which at times didn’t follow good draft strategy to me. The players we got were good talented guys I hope to see on the field next year, if this happen of course then the trades were great moves, so I hope to come back around at some point re-evaluating this draft and giving it a higher score.

I kind of agree with you on the 2nd RD trade, BUT, just because no other team a CB doesn’t mean they wouldn’t have taken one if Howard was on the board. He may have been the guy those teams wanted. At the time of the draft, I completely thought they blew it. After thinking about it, I came to that conclusion

I had him rated below who the Vikings took 16 spots later Alexander, Mackensie CB but I know teams have their way of putting their boards together…

You really don’t keep signing guys up until camp, sure it happens, but most teams don’t get more than fodder from here on out. I keep hearing by you guys all these players were still going to sign.
    ________________________________

You’ve seen where they’re still mulling DE Jason Jones, CB Leon Hall, maybe still RB Arian Foster, Matt Slauson was released by the Bears yesterday….so don’t say you still can’t get solid depth guys after the draft in FA.

    Tim,

You’re right, my bad. I just wanted Booker. Selfishly. No clue on the Alabama kid, but I hope he’s a good one. He probably has a lot less miles on him since he wasn’t the featured guy.

  7. drg's avatar drg says:

My comment about depth is more of a numbers thing. The odds of finding quality players is higher in the 3/4/5 rounds than 6/7. Not dramatically so, but if you continually give those picks away and rely on 6/7 and UFAs you typically end up with guys who have a lower ceiling. That, and we invest a lot of money in a small number of players so it means we run into cap issues retaining vets.

It’s nitpicking to some degree, but the cumulative effect is tough to overcome.

    • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

My point exactly, trade 5th, 6th 7th round picks all you want but 3rd and 4th and even 5th sometimes still land you both quality depth and cheaper players….

The most important thing is Miami drafted players they targeted and that is all that matters for now. As a passionate fan I want what is best for the team so I hope things work out. We did get players in FA every guy we lost we aren’t getting picks for. I think you’re way off D.
    ——————————–
Steve the way the system works inst plus or minus in FA its specific to position. Lose a DE in FA, do not get one in FA (and street FA signings do not count) and ou are at a deficit, signing a S does not int he least offset the DE loss because its a different position. It also has a lot to do with the YPA of the salary the player got from the team they signed with.

Vernon, for example, was a loss at DE, we did not sign a DE in FA so no offset, because he rec’d an 18mil YPA salary, he’s a sure fire 3rd round selection as compensation and because i think he was one of the biggest contracts of the off-season for a player signing with another team, its likely our comp pick will be one of the first ones for that round.

Miller was a loss at RB, which we didnt replace in FA (I dont think Pead or DT3 were URFA’s, but even if they were, they are negligible in salary as an offset). He got 6.5 mil YPA salary. Will kind of depend on where the YPA cutoff is on whether or not he is a 3rd round compensation, but he will should be at least a 4th.

Shelby and Matthews again, represent playes in positions we lost in FA that we did not re-comp at that position. Shelby rec’d 4.5 mil YPA contract, and Rishard Matthews a 5mil YPA contract. Each of these guys should also be 4th round compensation levels.

  14. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

The Giants think that if your name is Eli you have to play for them. They were clearly leading the league in Eli’s prior to the draft and now the lead seems almost certainly insurmountable.

  15. D's avatar D says:

Id love to see what their draft boards were, what they looked like. Several comments i heard regarding their draft id also like to know answers to. One in particular was reported that Tunsil was number 2 on their board. I cant see how he would have been anything but a 1 for us, considering we didn’t need a QB in the 1st, so i could only guess the no 1 guy was Ramsey, but id like to know who was 1. Id also really like to know who the top CB was. They keep saying the traits they liked in Howard was his alpha male attitude, aggressiveness, and press ability, and i know Hargreaves has those traits in bucket fulls. Just curious to know who their guy was.

  16. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Thoughts? …or should we run around the mulberry bush on picks that were traded & why?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yes I do think we felt scoring more points was paramount regardless of the defense. But most of our moves prior to the draft was on defense so we kind of balanced it out.

  17. D's avatar D says:

Also if alpha male is their thing, i cannot see Bosa being attractive to them at all. That dude’s self assured attitude was such a put on. Id rather have someone who is honest about their weaknesses than a phony tough guy.

  18. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

drg, the way our draft played out, we kind of need to get 4th rd value from our 6th and 7th rd picks – role players, depth and STs. If we do then we did just fine. if not they will be questioned about their moves. But if our top 4 picks become impact players, that will level it out.

    ——————————
Grier in an interview claimed there was someone in between the 4 picks we traded up to, and our original spot, that might have taken him. These are the 3 players we jumped to move up.

TB, who took Hargreaves in the first.
NYG, who took Apple in the first.
Bills, who have Stephon Gilmore and Ronald Darby

Im thinking the chances of him being take were slim. There is a chance another team might have been looking to trade up, but im just not believing it was much of a threat.

I read the comp picks rules D, and no one else besides you is saying we’re getting 2 3s 2 4s and a 7th (I believe that’s what you were saying, if not it’s close). We’ll see next yr.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Our management is expecting a 3rd, 4th and 7th in comp picks in 2017. If they’re right, they nailed it. LOL

So despite our dastardly trades, they’re banking on having their traditional 1, 2, 5, 6 and 7, and a 3rd, 4th and 7th to replace our wasteful spending in the 2016 draft via comp picks. If they are wrong, they have egg on their face.

That said, can we focus on the 2016 team and hope for the best, geez!!! 🙂

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We traded a 2017 3rd and 4th rd pick for Carroo, whether our own or the comp refills. Nobody really knows which ones yet. If we don’t get those comp picks, it will be our normal 3-4 leaving us with 1, 2, 5, 6 and 7. However we will be getting comp picks to some degree in 2017.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Tim, the 4th we gave up is conditional, if we get a 4th rd comp pick Minn. gets that, if not they get our regular 4th. We do know that.

  59. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Steve, yes!

We have our normal draft 1-7 in 2017. Then the projected 3, 4 and 7 via comp picks.

We traded a 2017 3 and 4 to get back into the 3rd in 2016 to select Carroo….

Some food for thought, Jets GM Mike Maccagnan said most teams have 12-15 1st rd grades every year. So it tells you the mocksters are just throwing shit at the window. LOL

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I agree they’re throwing shit at the window, but a lot of that shit actually comes from someone from one of the teams (smokescreens).

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Somebody has to go 16-32, but they have 2nd rd grades. That’s why you see trades.

  60. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    Tim, here’s the trade:

    • Traded their sixth-round No. 186 overall pick, a 2017 third-round pick and a conditional fourth-round pick in 2017 to the Vikings for their third-round No. 86 overall pick (drafted Leonte Carroo).

The condition is if we get a 4th comp pick that’s the pick we traded.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The conditional is whether the comp picks happen or not. We traded the comp picks. If that fails we give up our traditional 3-4. That’s how I read it.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The 4th only is conditional, from ESPN. I also read the 3rd was too, but I can’t confirm that.

  61. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Tim, what I find funny are the people that say after the draft, see I told you this guy wasn’t a first round talent (talking about someone drafted in the 2nd round). You get a run on CBs and a 2nd round talent gets bumped up, so someone has to get pushed back. In another scenario maybe the guy is picked in the first, but the rd talent is just that, it’s not indicative of where he’s taken.

Will Davis was a 7th rd talent, but Ireland took him in what the 3rd?

  62. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Something I just thought of with Grant, if he’s returning kicks I don’t think too many opponents are going to get too cute with kickoffs in the corner and not in the end zone, like many speculated we’d see a lot of around the league.

    • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

Yes, they are since the kick backs that result in touchbacks to the 25 yard line.

      • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

hang time and positional placement of kickoffs are making kickers more valuable. Let’s not forget the yard distance increase for extra points. Welcome to the new NFL …

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The point was, because of the new bring it out to the 25 rule , it alluded that kickers will be trying to kickoff high and to the box between the 5 and endzone. So I was insinuating they’d fear Grant and not let him return it.

Morning FU’ers. Well, what a boat-load of comments I had to read through to find out what went on. I’ve been travelling in Korea and China so missed most of the fun.
Seems that most people are lukewarm to fully on board with the picks but some dissent about how we acquired them. I read somewhere that a team traded down after we picked CB XH if that makes anyone feel better (Bears?) but anyway it is what it is.
Also, if Caroooooooo is A “Q” B-lite and we got him a year early, I’ll have some of that too.
I know none of these picks and none of the other draft options, so I am at least as qualified as everyone else to express an opinion since all yours have been wrong! LOL 😉
This team has tried doing it “the conventional way” and been a long way from the play-offs and a winning record for too long.
This off season we did it a bit differently. We identified the biggest weakness on the team (a failure to score points) and did something about it. We had a 1st round gem fall into our laps (by all accounts) so we may keep Tanny on his feet more this season. Then we drafted a bunch of players who can either fight for the ball on short routes (since Tanny can’t complete a pass >10yds) or create mismatches. We also started to do something about the second biggest weakness of the team – physicality on D – two press-man corners, Alonso at LB and some DE options.
The plan is clear to see and this is the first step of the install. Gase wants to create a multi-dimensional unpredictable O and seems to be qualified to do this. He also wants to build an aggressive D. We are retooling without rebuilding – in fact we are building on the good aspects of the team.
None of us know if Gase will achieve what he set out to do until January and if what he set out to do will even be a success.
I took the bait last season and fell for the hope after the Panthers practice. I won’t make the same mistake this year. But I can say that I am more stoked after this draft than the last. Bottom line though, is still “show me” Dolphins. Walk the walk, forget the talk.

Hey UK – Excellent post my “travelin’ man” friend! As much as many of us expected more defense in the draft, they chose to address most of that in the free agency period, although signing Super Mario won’t count against our future compensatory picks, which is good, because the FO is obviously counting heavily on those.

Free agent G/C Matt Slauson will visit the Chargers and Bills.
Slauson is visiting the Chargers on Wednesday, and will then make the trip to Buffalo. He was drafted by coach Rex Ryan with the Jets in 2009. Buffalo reportedly envisions him as a right tackle. Slauson was Pro Football Focus’ No. 18 guard last season, excelling in pass protection. He has position-versatility, being able to play either guard spot or center.

I did look up the rules on the comp picks again Steve and you were correct about the limitation to 4, but i hold our picks will be 4 in round 3-5, and i think it will be more 3 and 3 4’s since they all are around the same YPA amount. As you said we will see, no one knows for sure what the formula is except the NFL but from everything i have read on it, thats what i think we will get. The 3rd is almost a guarantee, Miller might also be a 3, but i think that depends on how many other FA’s left their teams for other teams and what those YPA contracts were. In the grand scheme of things his 6.5 per might not be as significant.

  93. The #1 deciding factor on what round the comp pick is in will be the salary received by the player lost. That salary holds the most weight in the round of the comp pick; by far. Then there’s playing time and post season honors such as pro bowl which hold much less weight.
As of right now, the salary would put us with a 3rd for OV, a 4th for Miller and a 7th for Matthews. At the end of the season the salary of the players lost is compared to that of the salaries of all players on each team’s final 53 man roster to determine the round. Again, salary puts the comp pick in the round. That’s the starting point.

    • The “rules” for awarding comp picks has changed. In the past they compared players lost to players gained but that’s not it works anymore. The 3 components are now salary, playing time and post season honors. I believe they changed it when they decided comp picks can now be traded.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

That’s not correct, you have to compare players lost to players gained, or else every team could get multiple picks and they only allow a total of 32. Also if they did that it would defeat the purpose of comp picks. Compensation for guys lost in FA. Who writes this shit.
