Large Scamotz

It happened seemingly overnight, I used to walk to the corner Italian restaurant into the bar area and pick up a large scamotz (how we used to say it) for the family. It is actually “scamorza” cheese and it used to be what all the pizza’s were made with. That and thick pepperoni that had a bite to it and would curl up at the edges as it cooked. All of a sudden scamotz disappeared and mozzarella took its place. I didn’t even get a chance to say goodbye. The thin white box, so hot on the bottom you could barely hold it with thin crust and the smell – oh the smell – delicious.

fm2015-pizza-4e6acac1

Three Corner’s Italian Restaurant was just a couple of blocks away, across from Gene’s market, where I bought my baseball cards. Well baseball cards, football cards, gum, candy, soda, twinkies, devil dogs, neco wafers, Tahitian treat, Yoohoo you name it. Anyway, Three Corners wasn’t one of the better restaurants around but it was the closest so it served our family well at times. I remember walking up there and entering the smoke filled bar to pick up the large scamotz with pepperoni. The bar was separate from the restaurant and had it’s own entry. I was just a little kid then too, but the bartender and the patrons didn’t care that a kid was in there.

I’ll just never understand how quickly scamorza suddenly disappeared. I’ve heard it had to do with cost and availability but how could everyone have had it one day and not the next. I suppose the change was more gradual impero20scamorza20a-675x675than I may remember because to me it was abrupt and sudden and leaves me baffled still to this day. Ordering a large scamotz was so simple, it flowed off the tongue. Now it’s a “cheese” pizza and who knows what crap they are putting on there. Large mozzarella sounds idiotic, no one orders a large mozzarella. But they did order a large scamotz, you better believe it.

There used to be a simpler time. A time when you ordered a pizza by the name of the cheese on it. A time when it was a given that Don Shula would have his team in the playoffs and the Big Red Machine would be a factor. Now it’s cheese pizza, Patriots and no one cares about baseball all that much. We, well at least I, want our old pizza cheese back. We want Coach Gase to return the Dolphins to prominence and glory. And baseball, well baseball can still use the All-Star game to manipulate the season.

We are two long weeks away from the opening of camp for most NFL teams and a month or more away from even pre-season games but the hardest stretch is about to be over and we we can live in football harmony once again. Our Dolphins seem primed to break out, properly coached and motivated this is a talented group that has as good a chance as any Dolphin team to make a playoff run.

M: Yea, dat sounds good.

rp: You gonna pick it up?

M: No, I’ll send da boy down

rp: Alright then

Gase said he was impressed how Grier stuck to the board and it just happened to end up being a heavy offensive draft. That wasn’t necessarily the plan. But most of the moves in the offseason prior to the draft were defense so it kind of balanced itself out.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’m not sure I buy there wasn’t a plan in place to go heavy on offense going into the draft

These players may have been BPA on their board but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t the plan to go after some guys who can make big plays like Drake and Grant and for that matter Carroo

If you factor in the trade up for Carroo I think its evidence that the Dolphins really prioritized bringing in a receiver with his skill set – and that probably has a lot to do with what Gase wants to build on offense

In terms of prior to the draft I see Willaims as an opportunity the Dolphins could not have passed – so I agree with you to that extent, bc once you add him you decrease the need for DE via the draft

But when you get into Kiko and Maxwell, well the Dolphins could have selected LBs or CBs in after the Tunsil pick to compete with those guys down the line
maybe not this year but down the line

but they chose a different path

and albeit I admit its speculative on my part, I really think the Drake, Caroos, Duartes and Grants of the draft are more about building for a Gase coached team

Most of those guys have mismatch written all over them

maybe he didn’t pull the trigger on the names but I’m sure when they hired him they like his philosophies and were ready to build a team for him….which is a good thing IMO

the stuff said to the media about the offseason can be dribble drabble sometimes

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Pig, you’ve played FF before you know how drafts go, it’s really hard to say I want this guy in round 3, then actually take him there, if you aren’t reaching. I think Carroo was dropping and they moved up, but not planned. Like Tunsil dropped, but they didn’t have to trade up.

(part of your post above) “But when you get into Kiko and Maxwell, well the Dolphins could have selected LBs or CBs in after the Tunsil pick to compete with those guys down the line

but they chose a different path”

    Reply
They did bring in Xavien Howard in the 2nd round to compete @ CB….was a big need and they moved on it early. Let’s not forget we also have young developing Defensive players going into their 2nd-3rd & 4th years @ DE, LB, DT, & in the Secondary.

We need to score more points on Offense, run better plays, control more clock, and Gase saw that immediately as the more glaring year 1 need. Especially with the critical media bashing on the QB that just got paid to be Mr. Franchise.

Score the points, control the game on Offense, and with that the Defense will benefit and can become that more aggressive unit that VJ envisions with an Offense taking some pressure off of them.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

RT has been very good when we’ve been able to run it, fix that and suddenly the team looks much better.

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

As is with any team’s QB…running effectively opens up the coveed passing game.

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Steve, also hence the recent Foster signing. We’re seeing a HC that wants to utilize the running game more than 12 bizarrely timed rushes per game. 🙂

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I don’t necessarily think Gase was directly related to the Foster signing, but I’m sure they asked him. The FO is talking with the HC and the VP, finally everyone on the same page. Part of Philbin’s issues had to do with the FO not doing what he wanted. I think even Hickey was a dickey at times 😛

  7. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Piggy, I don’t know why you wouldn’t buy what they did in the draft. Maybe they thought the BPA was offense as the draft went on and they were up. That’s how you should draft anyway. Gase said he thought the draft would be heavier defense and then it wasn’t. So he’s not lying, he’s saying he was surprised but was impressed by how Grier stuck to their board which means grades on players.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’m as skeptical as anyone about what HCs say, but I don’t see any logical reason why Gase wasn’t on the level when talking about the O heavy draft. Usually HCs start getting upset or figity or disinterested when they aren’t on the level. I haven’t seen Gase come close to doing that yet. The only thing he’s sugarcoated is when talking about the players, and that’s to be expected, because he doesn’t want to throw them under the bus.

I think Williams wants to prove he’s still elite. In this 4-3 scheme if he still is, look out.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

He’s just 30, and since he’s not an RB he’s not over the hill, and it shouldn’t even come into the conversation, but the media always has to bring up irrelevant shit. I’m not even sure a 30 yr old RB is old, since we don’t see a lot of every down backs. Foster had lots of carries some years, but with injuries he didn’t have a lot in other years, so I don’t think he’s over the hill. I do know when healthy he steam rolled the Steelers D.

I’d be absolutely shocked, if Mario was worse than his 2014 season.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Tyically when you put great players in a position to succeed they usually do.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Years ago when Williams was a FA who left Houston to go to Buffalo, I coveted him and said that was a guy worth signing (I think we signed Mike Wallace that offseason – yuk)

I still think he is in that class of special player
I’m not buying he is over the hill

If he is still what he was before Rex Ryan then we signed a special player

If somehow we see Wake, Williams, Suh and Phillips on the DL at the same time next season – that is the stuff of Oink Dreams

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

        We signed a special player.

  9. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Let Mario be MARIO…I think we’ll see that he has that liberty with Jim Washburn & VJ knowing Suh & Phillips can eat up blockers as well as collapse the middle. The Ends & blitzers should cause havoc, which will also make the secondary better.
I think we’ll see a vastly improved defense in 2016 and you guys can stop whining about not drafting more defense the first year of Gase’s reign….lol

You are right Piggy the draft was not well executed they SHOULD have targeted a young DE and another CB rather than wast a pick on Caroo I will stand by my conviction on that and this season we lost out on having a young pass rusher to mentor with our two pro bowl DE’s

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

We can still have that next year….this also gives the staff a chance to see if talent like Fede, Laing, Jordan Williams, Huguenin can develop, especially the first two I mentioned.

I think there will be points this year where we wish we were deeper on D

But that said I do like Ifo Elembre-olomo a lot even though I have to google his name everytime I try to spell it

More than anything the position that worries me is LB

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

And when did you want to take that DE? Tunsil in the first was the correct choice, as was Howard in the 2nd, and we surely needed an RB before a DE. A DE needs to be a top two round pick, if you were looking to replace a starter. Who was that guy you wanted in Carroo’S spot?

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Yeah, after Howard it was just Noah Spence a OLB/DE, Correa OLB/DE, Jihad Ward DT/3-4 DE…the likes of Lawson, Ogbah, Dodd, were all gone between our Tunsil & Howard picks.

Saw this interesting tidbit in Barry Jackson’s Wednesday evening notes:

Pro Football Focus says this about the move: “Assuming Foster gets back to form not from 2015, he should be a solid fit in that scheme as well, but Jay Ajayi’s numbers suggest he might be an even better fit, and shouldn’t automatically get dropped down the depth chart to accommodate Foster.

“In Chicago, Adam Gase ran primarily inside zone as the primary run concept. 48.9 percent of the team’s rushes last season were inside zone runs, and the team was pretty successful running them, averaging 4.2 yards per carry. Foster was bad across the board last year even before injury shut him down, but what is interesting is that Ajayi outperformed not just Foster, but also the Bears as a team when running inside zone. Ajayi gained half a yard more per carry than the Bears and 1.6 yards per carry more than Foster running inside zone plays, and was markedly more productive on those runs than other concepts in 2015.”

Not sure there is much to criticize regarding the Fins draft.
I was not a fan of the Drake pick considering where he was picked vs his injury risk profile.
It was a deep RB class.
Fins could have probably traded down to pick up extra picks if RB was such a need in their eyes.
I liked quite a few backs and thought Paul Perkins & Kenneth Dixon were better RB and went later in RD 4/5.
Extra late round picks could have given the Fins a chance to double down on RB…

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

In the end, everyone has their favorites and things go differently depending on whos calling the shots.
I like where Miami is heading regardless and can’t wait till this season starts.
I’m with you Markey; the coaching will be different this year.
Sparano & Philbin never called plays on either defense or offense before becoming head coaches (huge problem IMO since you can’t figure out how they handle decision making on the fly in games and judge them by it).

  14. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Markey,
I’m not too concerned about DE as in recent years the veteran pass rushers who were good in their youth were still out there performing -> DeMarcus Ware, Julius Peppers, etc.
Wake is coming off his achilles injury which is always scary but Wake is a workout warrior and early reports on his workouts have him looking good. The Fins just have to manage his snaps and rest him if there is any soreness reported on his part during the season.
Mario has height which is something Vernon didn’t have and that helps to block passes when you can’t get by the OL on a rush attempt.

    Subject: The Spanish Teacher

A SPANISH Teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine.

‘House’ for instance, is feminine: ‘la casa.’
‘Pencil,’ however, is masculine: ‘el lapiz.’
A student asked, ‘What gender is ‘computer’?’

Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether computer’ should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation.

The men’s group decided that ‘computer’ should definitely be of the feminine gender (‘la computadora’), because:

    1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic;

    2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else;

    3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval; and

    4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck on accessories for it.

    (THIS GETS BETTER!)

The women’s group, however, concluded that computers should be Masculine (‘el computador’), because:

    1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on;

    2. They have a lot of data but still can’t think for themselves;

    3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the problem; and

    4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little longer, you could have gotten a better model.

    The women won.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

      1. We’re always turned on.
      2. We can think for ourselves just fine, it’s women we can’t think for, because even women themselves don’t know what they want.
      3. Women don’t want their problems solved they just want you to feel what they’re feeling.
      4. This one is unisex.

there is really only one question about cutting gov’t spending which I think is a big difference between Johnson and the others

I don’t necessarily want to pay for them all….lol

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      Yes

but a few of them I probably overdid it
I also did a few where I wanted a different answer more than yes and no and then just picked the closest to what I was thinking

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

No but I did use the “other” answers quite a bit because to me it’s not just yes and no in such a black and white manner.

  29. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I believe a lot of entitlement programs can be helpful for people but not just yeah go ahead and spend, spend spend. I also don’t believe in more taxes for the rich. I believe the % takes care of a progressive tax. The more you make the more you pay. I have no idea what Bernie Sanders means by the rich paying their fair share. Who decides what that number is? Taxing the rich at a higher percentage goes against the American Dream IMO. I do believe that’s punishing achievement to pay for those who do not have lofty goals in life and that’s morally unfair to me.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’ve always been a flat tax guy

but running my own business makes me aware of all the benefits of our tax code and now as a businesss owner – I try to exploit those
and the flat tax would ruin that

So I think the disparity between being able to manipulate our tax code between the rich and the poor and that leaves to some very high incomes paying less than a “fair share”

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Running a business is different than your personal income though. Businesses should have write-offs because you invest in your business. You have overhead. But you also have to pay taxes on what you claim to make/clear.

Now do I think people abuse the system, yes, but I think it’s pretty obvious what people are doing. Your business records show it’s worth $5M per year yet the owner claims he only makes $50,000 per year. Yeah okay. LOL

  30. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Tim,
The title or group label to some of the questions asked seemed a bit odd.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I totally believe in drug testing. FUCK THAT!!! No dude or dudette is buying weed or meth, or heroin on my tax dollar. Get a fucking job!!!

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      I understand the logic

but I just don’t care for drug testing in general
I see drug testing as big brother in any arena and I just don’t care for it

I would be more inclined to cut the program if its not helping or leading to independence of the person rather than cutting it bc of a positive drug test

If some one is a heroine addict
but they hold down a job
and eventually they will be off welfare
I’m okay with paying their welfare
of course heroine addicts tend not to be on a path like that….lol

      If some one receives welfare
but they are clean as a whistle
      and just flat out lazy
and never try to make changes on their life – I would rather see that person lose the social benefit rather than the junkie who is on his way to success

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I get that too. To me being a junkie/addict is different though. It’s not that clear cut to me. Not all people on public assistance never worked. Some fell on hard times. We tend to think everyone is just a freeloader and that’s not really the case. Career dependents are a problem but it’s not the majority and most people paid into the programs.

I find it interesting how people end up with such different percentages with candidates. How can both Trump and Johnson be so close in %, they have quite a few differences?

  33. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’d bet there are a higher percentage of freeloaders collecting either unemployment or welfare using drugs than there are hard working poor people that use drugs. Responsible people with a low income realize they can’t afford to buy drugs.

I think we need to cut back on rewarding single parents each time they have a child. If it were up to me, I’d include a survey which asks if you’re currently living with another person, married or otherwise. Too many single moms are actually living with someone out of wedlock, which still entitles them to benefits they don’t deserve. That drives me crazy. It’s so easy to abuse too, in fact the government practically encourages it. Back to the drugs though, if welfare or unemployed people are using, they should be cut off immediately.. That’s how I feel

LOL @ Tunsil vs everyone. I still think he’ll start at LG and be groomed as the future LT and current backup when they cross-train him.

If Bushrod can get and stay healthy I see him competing at RG and RT yes even against James. He can also provide depth at LT which he’s been his entire career. I think Urbik’s versatility gives him a leg up on Thomas and Turner because he plays all 3 interior positions. Douglas will compete to win a starting job inside as well or be the game day interior backup vs. Urbik.

The OL competition will be interesting as well.

      Totally agreed!

      Mitchell at 6-3 310 is a non-stop motor interior D-lineman. He’s just not a star player.
Phillips at 6-6 335 is a monster of a man with rare quickness for a guy his size. He has unlimited potential. It’s up to him.

I think Phillips is in for a HUGE year now with experience working with Suh next to him, along with the tutelage of Jim Washburn too.
Those 2 sealing off & collapsing the interior will cause havoc for QB’s unable to step into throws and getting flushed into either DE…Blitzers & LB’s will feast filling the gaps.
RB’s will get stacked too, and lose time redirecting laterally to find their way around the ends.
The trench work of our massive quick & strong DT’s will set the tone for the rest of the Defense if schemed correctly…there is adequate talent there behind them.

TWO MORE HITS FOR ICHIRO TONIGHT!!! –NOW 2,996 hits and counting as the Marlins are cruising 9-2 in the bottom of the 8th at Philadelphia. This win will make Miami 3 out of 4 at Philly with a weekend 3-game series at home vs. the Mets starting tomorrow night. Giancarlo Stanton was given the night off by manager Don Mattingly and old reliable, Ichiro Suzuki, came through with a couple of hits, as he has for most of the season. He’s now hitting over .340 again, not bad for a 42 year old, eh??
    ——————–
Chances are Ichiro will start no more than 1 game against the Mets. But he’ll almost surely get his 3,000th hit sometime during Miami’s upcoming 9-game home stand. Expect hundreds and hundreds of Japanese media to cover what is, from their point of view, one of the biggest events in the history of Japanese-American baseball. I will be GLUED TO THE TUBE as Ichiro’s march to history reaches its conclusion. Indeed, I’m actually giving some thought to going to a game or two in Miami this coming week!
    —————–
Lost in the big Ichiro story is the fact that the Marlins have a chance to close the gap between them and the Washington Nationals during this 9 game stand. For the first time in over a decade, this Miami franchise has a pulse as we enter the serious stages of the playoff chase. Wouldn’t it be great if the Dolphins had one, too, this season???

Ron Paul had an interesting tweet/article about Trump’s stand on NATO yesterday. Paul thinks he has been inconsistent. I will see if I can find the tweet and post it for you to read.

He has said “illegal” when discussing the wall and immigration policy consistently. So you are correct. But citizenship in this day and age is a little more complicated then it seems on the face. I recently read the 2014 census stats and last then half of immigrants who have come here actually are citizens. However that includes people on visas that are technically not in violation of any immigration laws. Still there are a large % of Immigrants that can be classified as “illegal” and I really think the distinction is not as black a nd white as people make it.

I do think he specifically said “Muslim” without the caveat you stated but I haven’t seen the quote

Major reason we have such an issue with how we deal with item such as immigration and race relations is we are asking people who are so disconnected from the real world of people who make less than 6+ digits, and who deal with these issues daily, vs soaring high above them in their private jets/air force one. The people we get to choose from after the cluster fuck of a two party primary system are not of the people, the choices aren’t by the people, and they are not for the people they are for whatever people paid to get them elected.

My personal opinion of the way it should be is for topics like immigration would be to have a roundtable discussion inviting immigrants that came to the country legally and have lived here as citizens for many years, some new to the immigration process who may be either new citizens or working towards citizenship, some that represent illegal immigrants (yes i know who is going to sign up to be those guys lol), and natural born citizens FROM STATES WITH HIGH POPULATION OF ILLIEGALS. I stressed that last part because i think states that are not strongly affected (in a good way, bad way, or neutral way) by illegal immigration should have any voice in the matter. They do not full understand the impact/lack of impact.

At this round table of people who understand and can relate to the problems on both sides of it, they hash it out and get the bullshit rhetoric from people who dont really understand they just parrot the “oh they are taking our jobs” or the “oh illegals dont represent any more threat to us” of their lib/con agendas. This is when realy people who understand the real problem combine to work out a solution that can be fair for both sides.

You can apply this sort of thing to any number of conflict area problems and what happens is the people take back control for who makes the policies. Instead of one guy who we elected, because he wasnt as bad as the other guy (not indeed a person who we liked) making the decisions we put the power back into the hands of the ones suffering through it.

  73. D's avatar D says:

Tim im sorry to hear that man. I think i get how ya feel. I cant say i know precisely how close you were to your father in law, but from the things you have mentioned i can assume it was a close relationship.

I cared a good deal from my wife’s father in law as well, we were pretty close too. Its kind of odd, the love you can feel for a in-law can be anywhere from passers in the night to close enough it almost makes you feel like you are cheating on your own parents. I guess its the idea of here are these people with no blood relation to you but whom have come to love and treat you as their own, and they didnt have to. They could have stayed on the perimeter, showed love for their child and tolerance or even acceptance for you, but they chose to go even further and open their hearts and family to you and treat you as one of their own. This is not a love of obligation, this love is by choice. I understand that a good parent, there really is no bond that can compare, but a in-laws love, knowing its by choice, can feel almost equally as strong.

I feel for your loss buddy, and condolences to your family.

Pokemon Go has become a very dangerous thing. I just saw a video of a cop who was parker at the corner of a street and this SUV comes along and just slams into it and then hits a few more cars parked on the side of the street before coming to a stop. The cops go over to see if the dude is ok and he was playing Pokemon go whole driving down the road. They are already having places where people are setting up ambush spots to rob people, and the had a police station that had to put a sign up outside to keep Pokemon people from going inside the building and making it where other could not get in to access those services. Apprently a few kids have found some dead bodies though, so maybe missing persons cases are getting solved. Nice memory for the kids!

  76. D's avatar D says:

I expect the Pokemon crazy to really settle a lot in a couple months. Only way it extends past that is if they churn expansion packs out pretty fast. A place like NY city, im sure would have so many Poke’ spots that it might take a while for someone to collect all of them in the city, ad with transit to other metro spots in the same area, yeah it could go on a while there before it gets old, but for the rest of America most towns don’t have a lot of spots, and collecting all of them wont take very long, then the option will be, wait for expansion, be bored and delete app, travel to other cities (note to NE peeps, we are more spread out here int he rest of the world lol) which isn’t practical/cheap.

The illegal immigration thing is not necessarily a problem in the job capturing part (as you mentioned, many take very low end paying jobs) but there are problems with state/federal benefits being allocated to them without those aliens paying into the system via taxes. At the state level, sales tax is something they all pay when they buy goods at stores but for federal items, they pay no federal payroll taxes since they go undocumented. People here can bitch about legal process and all this theoretical crap but the reality is that it’s much easier to legalize those already here immediate to put them on federal payroll taxes and then work to secure borders after the fact.
