Uh, it is true. I know it because I’ve done it. If I played against a team that I knew couldn’t run or had shown me they couldn’t in the game. I played differently. You always play run first, but if I knew they weren’t really gonna hurt me in the running game, I focused more on getting upfield….even if they lined in a running formation. If they could run…I stayed home more. I do agree it’s a little different in the NFL now with the pass heavy offenses, but the concept still applies…and that split second in the NFL is a lot quicker.
I don’t agree with that at all. I played DE, and never worried, if it was a run or pass. I got upfield as fast as I could on every play, unless something changed that right after the snap. It isn’t the same in the NFL, because they’re so much faster.

I’d put about a dozen sacks on Tannehill alone a year. I don’t think that’s above average. But, this is an old, worn out argument. I’m okay with differing opinions. We all see different things. Reality is probably somewhere in the middle. Lol

I’d put a dozen sacks on him a year too, but that doesn’t mean he also isn’t doing some good things on the other 500 passing attempts. When he stops taking those bad sacks I’d say his pocket presence would go up to very good. He also throws the ball away at times after he’s run right into a defender, so it’s not just 12 bad sack plays. The worst are the ones he takes in FG range that knocks us out.
Tannehill was responsible for about 30 of his own sacks last season. He cost us about 200 yds in field position with those sacks.

Then who filled the gap you left behind on the edge when you were getting upfield as fast as you could…because that’s how you lose containment on the edge. DEs who do that get run underneath unless you have a LB filling that gap. Sure, you may have your DE do that in obvious passing downs but not in situations where play action is a consideration. Isn’t that what we were talking about?
I’d set the edge, and force everything back inside, but I’d know after a couple of steps, if it was run or pass. The guys that get run underneath aren’t watching the ball. Again you get run underneath in the NFL, because everything happens so fast. I’m talking HS, college is a little faster, and the NFL even faster, but college most aren’t so fast that they blow by you.
No, you said play action only matters, if you fear the other team running it. On play action it freezes you, whether they can run it or not.
We’re definitely watching different games. Unless, however you’re not watching the Cowboys replay on NFL network.

Okay, you were a great defensive end. I’ve never seen it coached that way. That typically doesn’t work.
You said play action only works when the D fears the O running it, and that’s just not true. I agree it works better with that fear, and it may be in some cases, but as a generalized statement it’s not.

Wasn’t pretty. Like the 4 Qs of the up stuff and what it could do to other Ds though, especially if we have wideouts coming in fresh on a regular basis.
No question some sacks were on RT but I couldn’t tell you the number. Also he might have held onto the ball too long hoping to make a play. If you’re constantly throwing the ball away due to pressure you’re not moving the ball that way either.

There’s 3 parts to throwing the ball away. First is on 1st or 2nd down, you’ve got to get rid of it, you can’t hold it to lond and take a sack. On third down you need to hold onto it as long as possible, then when in FG range you don’t want to take a sack to knock you out of FG range or make the kick over 50.

I’m not concerned if Wake plays in the PS at all. He’s a seasoned vet who I’d rather see play in meaningful games even if he just plays on passing downs early down.

I agree. Wake needs to save himself for the regular season. It seems like he’s worn down a little late in the past couple seasons. He doesn’t really need to actually play in PS games. He can do everything he needs in practice.
Yeah and he wears down because he played a lot of snaps. Hopefully we can cut down his snaps with depth so he can be effective in the 4th qtr and throughout the season.
He’s also been playing on the other side of the 30 the last few years and he’s an undersized DE to begin with going up against guys with 50+ lbs. on him.

Plus, the offense needs to start prolonging drives and not having so many 3 and outs. Everyone keeps talking about the uptempo offense, but thy forget the impact that has on the defense. If it works, great, but if it doesn’t, it puts a lot of pressure on the defense….and by the 4th quarter those defenders are gassed.
Agreed. That’s why we need to run the ball more and score more often. Way too many 3 and outs.
But part of the problem in recent years is the defense has allowed opening scores too often as well. We’d get down 7-0 and Lazor would abandon the running game. LOL

It seemed like we had a lot of games last year where the offense would play well, but the defense wouldn’t. Then, it’d flip the other way. We didn’t play very many complimentary football games. Hopefully, they can start putting together solid overall team performances.
Totally agreed on complimentary football. We were bad at it last year. We didn’t play enough competitive games either. We got our asses kicked way too often.
This happens to all teams, with the rules what they are it’s really hard to stop offenses that get in a groove. You have to be able to adjust. If your O is struggling the D needs to pick them up and vice versa. Some unit is always going to struggle.

We could keep 5 RBs to start the season and then it could be a position where one gets released for other needs during the season or if one of them goes down you have that depth. 4 is the likely number but I wouldn’t be shocked at 5 to start the season.
this game is important for the rb decision. But I agree. I can see us keeping 5 rbs and only 2 TEs
I think we keep at least 3 TEs in Cameron, Sims and Duarte.

if we do keep 3 TEs the third TE is not on the team right now IMO. Duarte is gonna go to PS. He hasn’t shown anything in camp from everything I’ve read.
Not so sure about that. He made some plays in the PS too. He’s a hybrid who can be a mismatch against LBs and safeties. He can be in the lineup as a TE where teams don’t sub a DB in nickel and then he spreads out and becomes a 3rd receiver. Gase believes in mismatches.

From what I read, Omar seems to think Duarte is not likely to make the final 53

Cameron is prototype size at TE at 6-5 265 and can get open down the field. Sims is your typical big man TE at 6-4 270 who can chip DEs, block LBs and who can sneak out from time to time as a receiver. Duarte is a hybrid TE/H-back/Receiver at 6-3 240.

I go back and watch the play that Landry catches the ball on the deflection, he catches it at the 2 they push him back to the 8, the fuckin idiot side judge (10 seconds after the catch was made) spots the ball on the 8, then gives the penalty down to the 4, half the distance.

The play above was spotted originally at the 2, the guy that spotted it there, threw his flag and must’ve forget he spotted the ball, as he was trying to break up the pushing match, so it should’ve been first and goal on the 1, the drive we turned it over on downs.

I’m watching it right now, Steen has no power. Damien first run of the 2nd half the play is setup to go right, he dances in the backfield, then goes left. He’d still be running, if he went right.

Player assessments are kind of funny because I had a “conversation” with Chris Kouffman and another Phins fan on Twitter who think Ulrick John is a good prospect and called him a physical specimen. John had one of the worst game I’ve ever seen from a Phins o-linemen last week. They said he lacks in pass protection but he’s a very aggressive blocker. Said he has a mean streak.
At this point in time I’d say he’s ahead of Turner, Thomas and Douglas at G. The fact that they put him in as 2nd team C in favor of Douglas says a lot. Urbik is a JAG if there’s one at C.

We’ll be fine, if Steen has to start a couple of games, but he isn’t close to Pouncey. He may be some day, but not yet.
well, Pouncey has been adequate and get’s the job done the majority of the time but, again, some talk like he’s an elite C. maybe he is in this day and age because what passes for good, great or elite isn’t quite the same as what it used to be but Pouncey is weak; he’s weak in his run blocking and I’ve seen him get beat in pass blocking plenty of times. He’s okay, but IMO he’s overrated.
He’s hot and cold, sometimes he shows a mean streak, then he does what you just said.
My 9 OL:
Albert, Tunsil, Pouncey, Bushrod, James, Steen, Young, Urbik, and John. My favorite backup is Sam Young, he’s so damn big and has good power and uses leverage. I like Urbik too, he uses leverage to gain power. Steen gets the job done, but doesn’t use leverage to his advantage, he blocks to straight up. John seems to be alright too, but haven’t watched him much. DT63, Turner, Douglas these guys are horrible, enough already.
Steen is the ONLY depth we’ve got on the o-line.
I don’t know what you’re watching, but all 4 of those guys I mentioned can play. No one else gets the push that Sam Young gets, run blocking or pass blocking. The Pead run against the Giants made possible by a Young block downfield.

At the end of the 3rd Qtr against Dallas the OL was John, Tunsil, Urbik, Steen, Young (L to R), with Pead at RB. We moved down the field, but the drive stalled inside the 10. This is the best backup unit I’ve seen on our team in a long time. I’m ok with any of these guys going into the game with the starters.
Ulrick John had one of the worst games I’ve ever seen from one of our o-linemen vs Dallas. Absolutely horrible. Gives up a sack, has a ball batted by the DE he’s blocking, gets whooped on a run block for a loss. Sam Young is Jason Fox 2.0. If you watched him play with the Jags you’d know this. He’s been beaten more times than the dead horse I’ve beaten when talking about Tannehill. Tunsil and the TE were the two guys who made the blocks to spring Pead on the long run he had to that side. John came off the line and didn’t block anyone until he was past 5 yds down the field. The only thing worse than Urbik playing G was Urbik as the 3rd string C. The depth on this line SUCKS.
Maybe you need to watch the games again. I just watched most of the offensive plays from both games. The play with Young downfield blocking on the Pead long run was against the Giants. Obviously he didn’t make it against the Cowboys, because it was on the other side.
I saw that run block you’re saying John missed, the play was to the right, Damien took it back left for some stupid reason, Young had his man pushed so far to the right that Damien had a 10 yard wide hole.
No, I don’t need to watch them again. The depth on the line sucks.
You piss and moan about RT, you can’t tell when a runner goes the wrong way, a batted ball against an OL is a death sentence, I’m starting to think you don’t know how to evaluate play.
Steen is green….he was highly touted coming from a great program @ Bama. He’s versatile, but this is his 1st time @ C. He’s in his 2nd year and spent most of his rookie year on PS. He should come into his own soon, and I wouldn’t doubt if he eventually outplays Pouncey….he’ll be smarter with the line calls for sure!
Of the 4 backup OL I mentioned, Steen is the weakest right now, but he plays smart. I don’t really know why they have him ahead of Urbik at Center.
I haven’t seen enough of Young to know what the problem is of why he isn’t getting the recognition, maybe he has a problem with speed rushers, because he looks a little slow, but with his size and reach he makes up for it.

And there you have it. Steen was never pancaked in front of Moore. Moore had three plays; the third of which was when he was knocked out of the game.
You can cut and paste, maybe you should try reading what you pasted. The pancake was against the Giants.
