It’s Game Day! Miami @ Seattle – Game One

capture(Header from CBS Sports)

Game Day.  It’s about damn time!   To make matters worse, the football scheduling gods have determined that we have to wait an additional 3 hours 5 minutes to begin the season.   I don’t know about anyone else but I think this offseason has been the longest by far.  We have a new coaching staff, some new players, and a brand new season that’s going to go by way too fast.  Hopefully we are enjoying every minute of it.

LETS GO DOLPHINS!!!!

I think we get a TD and 3 FGs and they get a TD and 2 FGs.

  5. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Maybe I’m naive, but I don’t fear Kearse or Locket as receivers able to win the game for them.
Jimmy Graham is still beat up and maybe 80%. Rawls is limping.
Can Wilson scrambling as their second leading rusher beat us? Can Baldwin get 14 TDs again this year? Starting with 2 or 3 against us? I really hope not.
But Wilson must throw 3 TDs and break loose for at least 3 heart-breaking long runs for them to score 20+.
They have a crummy OL on paper.

The irony of freedom to do what ya want protecting them to do this or gthe irony of people not wanting them to express their disgust by using those freedoms to do it. I see both sides but again, there are ways to accomplish both by targeting the problem. This country isn’t the problem.

  16. D's avatar D says:

Something should be done about the college ranking system. Texas was unranked last week. They beat number 10 Notre Dame, who had no reason being ranked so high. Texas them moves from unranked to number 11…..wtf. Conversely, Notre Dame only drops 8 points for lodging to an unranked Texas team…again WTF. UTenn dropped 9 points even though they won their game. UF dropped even though they won 24-7….again wtf. The system is broke and full of bias. Ridiculousness

A NIGHT AT THE NEWLY RENOVATED STADIUM.
    —————————————————————-
A fellow FAU alum called me three days ago and said he had two really nice tickets for the Miami-Florida Atlantic game at Rock Head Stadium. “One has your name on it,” he said. –So, despite the fact my wife is on the DL with another lower back injury (two prior major surgeries), I received her permission to go to the game. “I’ll deal with walking the 3 dogs as best I can,” she said.

The 250 mile drive from north Tampa to Boca Raton was uneventful and filled with classic rock music (one of my passions in life). I arrived a bit early. “Bob” said I’m going to take you to a really fine Cuban style restaurant, and the whole thing is on me, so don’t even THINK of trying to pay for any of this. This very busy restaurant was typically south Florida. Dozens of different nationalities in a building to do two things: eat outrageously good food and talk football, AMERICAN football, I might add. There were many U of Miami jerseys seen and a few FAU shirts, too, along with FSU, Florida and some others. “Cosmopolitan on steroids” was my reaction. I just love the mix. That’s what the real America is all about.

We headed to the stadium, entering from the west side entrance on 27th Avenue. I have NEVER BEFORE entered from this side, entering instead from the east side from the Florida Turnpike.–It was a madhouse, a human sea, wherein we barely moved for 30+ minutes before FINALLY getting to our prescribed area. Except for the Super Bowl and a few games in the Orange Bowl, I HAVE NEVER SEEN SUCH A CONCENTRATED MASS OF HUMANITY IN MY LIFE!! – – And even an old fart like ME couldn’t help but notice the thousands of young ladies, scantily clad, smiling at many of the passers by. Clearly the parking attendants were ill-prepared to handle the onslaught!–After about 45 minutes, we finally got to our reserved parking area.

The first thing I did was go to my newly located Dolphin seats. The view WAS SPECTACULAR!! –REALLY looking forward to joining Young Stanger at the Browns game!! –I looked straight up in the air and came to the conclusion (later verified by a passing shower) that if it rains hard we are not under cover). As for the “shade effect,” we are right on the edge of that, depending on the angle of the sun and the month. However, that said, it WAS cooler because so much of the sunlight was blocked from entering the stadium formerly known as “Sun Baked!” However, this was a 6 O’Clock start. Not sure exactly what things will be like, sun-wise, for a 1 O’Clock kickoff. My seats are on the northeast side, about the 27 and 28 yard line, 30 rows up. That’s roughly the equivalent of being 20 rows up under the old configuration (about 10 rows of seating were added, closer to the field). I have a clear, unobstructed, view of both end zones. And the new jumbotrons are truly spectacular–like watching the game at home on your big screen TV. So when the dummies walk in front of you during a play, you’ll still have the option of looking to a screen rather than threatening fans who block your view. I DO still wish the NFL would adopt the NHL rule that NO ONE can enter or leave their row while the play is ON!! –Jackasses!!!

AMBIENCE: The SWAGGER has returned, full blast, to Miami football. But no one was the least bit nasty to us FAU alums. WE were seated in row 19 at the 5 yard line in the south west corner. We were out numbered about 20-1 by UM fans in that section. AND they were ULTRA NOISY.–Speaking of NOISE, the new stadium configuration makes the place about 50 per cent noisier than before. THIS IS GREAT NEWS FOR DOLPHIN FANS, at least the ones who bother to show up! Let’s RESTORE THE ROAR!!!

FOOD PRICES: Above average for the NFL, and that’s saying something. However, you have a very wide range of food selections to choose from. Best deal I found was a 20 oz. Bud Light for $8 (no Coor’s Light 20 ouncers in our area). So I bought 1 beer! Most of the other beers were in the $10-$16 each range. By the way, this college facility DOES SELL ALCOHOL, unlike many college stadiums, including Florida Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

ATTENDANCE: Many chose to watch the game from the dozens of bars and food places around the stadium, a trait that I find a bit odd, but to each his own. While I believe over 60,000 tickets may have been sold (65,000 capacity) only about 45,000 were actually in their seats during much of the game. The crowd was noisy, but peaceful. Some were dressed in totally outrageous garb. Others were wearing the absolute minimum!! What a cross-section of humanity!! –The expensive “LAZY BOY SEATS” were mostly vacant when I looked at them, one trend that remains unchanged from last year.

THE GAME: FAU actually controlled the clock for most of the first half, trailing only 7-3 with just over a minute left. But UM scored a touchdown in the waning moments, giving them a 14-3 half time lead. QB Jason Driskel looked like Ryan Tannehill trying to avoid an overwhelming pass rush most of the game. This is to Miami’s credit—their defense was TRULY OUTSTANDING!! I now believe “the U” is one of the top 20 teams in the country. AS for FAU, 8 players, including Driskel, were helped off the field in the first 3 quarters. Some returned. Some did NOT. FAU still lacks enough top quality depth to play with the top 20 teams in the country. But they are a better team than they were last year at this point in the season, which is progress. However, they are seriously over matched by Kansas State, who they will play in Manhattan, Kansas, 6 days from now. I expect this beat-up FAU team to lose big to a quality K-State team that has had a bye week to prepare for the Owls.

FINAL THOUGHTS: STEVE ROSS’S upgraded edifice has passed the first test in my opinion. I was truly pleased with MOST of what I saw. However, there were a few snafus, not the least of which was the new ticket readers they used for this game (the readers could NOT easily read many valid tickets, to the consternation of many fans, including your’s truly. And there was NOT nearly enough of a police presence in the parking areas, something that will alarm my wife and keep her from attending. Tailgaters did NOT stay within the marked off boundaries, thus blocking the movement of cars into their prescribed areas. HOPEFULLY, complaint from UM season ticket holders will force Ross to clean up the mess in the west parking lot area in time for the Fins home opener against Cleveland later this month.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

This may have been your best post ever, but you just couldn’t leave Ross out of it, therefore SOS. Not sure what Ross has to do with policing a UM game.

      • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

He approves the hiring of security through his stadium manager. If security is below acceptable standards the blame ultimately falls to the owner of the facility. And that’s Steve Ross.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Lol, you’re just making shit up.

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

THAT”S RIGHT, Steve, I made this all up. There’ve never been any security issues with the stadium. However, if you want to keep your teeth, don’t tell that to my wife.
