The Porcine Oddyssey #103: A Simulation

Pigsgerald Bacon has agreed to participate in a simulation.  Today Piggy will be helping us demonstrate pocket awareness.  Specifically the pocket awareness of our very own quarterback – Ryan Tannehill.

To appreciate the authenticity of the simulation – Piggy will be wearing a blindfold

blidfoldpiggy

That way Piggy will have no idea what is going on around him!

and we made some last minute additions to the simulation that Piggy does not know about

Like adding a trap door right below Piggy…

closed-trap-door

So imagine that Ryan Tannehill is standing in the pocket..if there is a pocket

And suddenly something unexpected happens so the play doesn’t go as planned

To simulate this…the trap door opens…

fallthroughdoor

Now the blindfolded Piggy has no idea what is around him

In this case, we have a room full of hungry crocodiles to simulate the rushing defensive players coming at Ryan Tannehill

piggycrocodiles1

Look at Piggy Panic!

Look familiar?

Miami Dolphins v Cincinnati Bengals

Ryan Tannehill has been sacked 195 times in his career

He’s under pressure a lot more than that

He’s had a horrible offensive line

No run game

Some very predictable play calling

stripsack2

But some think he holds the ball too long

And he doesn’t seem to move very well in the pocket.

He has no sense of the rush around him.

And the result is 41 fumbles in 68 games

stripsack3

Fixing this might be Adam Gase’s biggest challenge

Can it be taught?

Gase seems to think so he recently sighted to helping Jay Cutler with this when he worked with Jay Cutler.

If it is fixed, it might just save the season for the Dolphins.

Okay Piggy…I think I made my point.  Let me help you out of there

handreachingfor-trotter

Oh wait…we aren’t done with the simulation

to simulate the Dolphins breaking the heart of Dolfans, we will simply pull our hand away while Piggy reaches

and watch him drop to the crocodile pit again

piggycrocodiles2

Did we tell you we named all the crocodiles Geno Atkins to make this as realistic as possible?

…Well looks like Piggy made it out of the crocodile pit trap door!

Can the Dolphins make it out of this 1-3 hole?

i just dont understand football. how can a giants def that has been on the field the whole first half hold a team to just two scores. what are they like super humans that never get tired. maybe they are robots or something. i mean that is impossible for a def to keep their team in the game when the offense sucks so bad.

Y’all watching Monday night football? They said earlier that Vernon left so he could play on a team with a QB capable of getting the team to a Superbowl. Miller got promised more chances to run but leaves his home town team, city he has played in his entire career to go to another team. Support for Tanny amongst his teammates doesn’t seem very string, if he isn’t held to same punishment as they are that just gets worse. I remember last year there was rumors around the London game where players were said to not care for him. Maybe this team isn’t behind him. Being pros I would expect they push through it, but it can be harmonious without that unity.

I’m not confident that Pouncey will make that big of a difference coming back, but I hope that he will. You look at our OL and you’d THINK it would be better than last year’s , but IMO it’s worse. They can’t run block for shit. Admittedly, the pass blocking seems a little better, but not by much.

  11. D,
Been saying the same thing. I think the entire team with few exceptions doesn’t have the faith that Tannehill is the qb that’s going to help them win games. Especially now. I think they’ve seen enough of him over the past four years to realize the situation they’re in and know they’re beating their heads against a wall and that as long as he’s the qb they might as well be on the bench.
I think just about everyone of his teammates wants him out of there.
Fans complained about the go, go-go thing with Sherman. Then they complained because Lazor didn’t allow him to change out of plays. Now he’s got the freedom to change things up at the line but defenses are confusing the shit out of him becaaaauuuussse he’s dummer than a stack of bricks.
So we still have a few people who think he deserves a chance to see what he can do the remainder of the season but IMO he’s had enough chances already and hasn’t proven anything.
It’s going to be a long season.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

How many of his teammates do you think feel that Brandon Doughty gives them the best chance to win this season?

      • all Doughty needs is a chance. that’s it. he can run this offense a hell of a lot better than RT1P8 can.
I’ve gone back and looked at the games again and, AGAIN, you see guys open that Tannehill could have thrown the ball to and he didn’t. There’s a play where it’s 3rd and around 4 or 5 and he’s got 3 guys he could’ve hit that would have had a chance at the first down and he throws it down the left sideline about 15 yds over Cameron’s head with 2 db’s on him. W-T-F!
        Gonna be a looooooooooooonnnnnnnngggggg season.

That’s funny, I thought OV went to NY because they paid him a gazillion dollars. Anyway, how’s that working out for him with that great leader QB Eli Manning? How’s OV doing? Nothing, much, kinda like what he did here. Now on the other hand, if a lot of his (RT’s) teammates feel that way, that the QB is holding them back, that is an issue, but the least they could do is do their job so RT has a chance to win the game.

    • that’s funny. “so RT has a chance to win the game”. Never gonna happen. What I love is when the offense goes 3 and out time and again and then they move the ball down the field and score like in the New England game and people are all swinging from RT’s ballsack saying “hey, he almost brought us back”.
No mention of how great the pass protection was during those drives though. Nah. Also no mention of the fact that we couldn’t move the ball earlier and no mention of his dumbass interception earlier that the D got a stop on. Nah.
So, the defense has to go out there time and again after all those 3 and out’s and continue to get stops so RT has a chance to win the game after the team is down because RT hasn’t gotten the team down the field to score points earlier in the game.
      Yep. That works for me.

You don’t give Doughty a shot because realistically, Ryan Tannehill gives them the best chance to win every week. He’s going to most likely get the rest of the season, although if he has another awful game, he may get benched, and then unless Moore or Doughty wins, I would expect Tannehill to play again at some point.

    • Realistically? I don’t think so. We could have won 6 games last season with Matt Moore at the helm. Tannehill being in there didn’t make a difference. Realistically speaking, this team has little chance of winning any significant amount of games with Ryan Tannehill as the quarterback.
We’re looking at 7-9 at best with him at the helm and Doughty could get us another 6 wins but at least he’ll develop into the better qb over that time and be ready for next season. Tannehill is finished. Stick a fork in him.
If he continues to start for the remainder of the season there will be issues within the team because the players are going to have a huge problem with him in there losing games.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yeah, the Panthers could have lost 3 games without Cam Newton this season too. What point does that make exactly, other than it’s a team game, and one player doesn’t really control the fortunes of the entire team, YES, even the QB.

      • that is true in some cases but in the case of the fins this team could be 3-1 if not for the shit qb at the helm

“when are fans going to realize that Ryan Tannehill is the single biggest reason this team is being held back from being successful?”

The reason fans don’t “realize” this is maybe because it is your opinion that you state as fact. Some of us happen to disagree with this.

    • my opinion. on the contrary, we’ve got 4+ seasons of his shit play that proves he ain’t the guy. what more do you want? are you one of those fans who think we should give him another 4 yrs to show what he’s got and waste time trying to win with a subpar qb?
tannehill can’t run the Gase offense. the qb who runs his O has to be able to read defenses and make quick decisions with the football and tannehill cant do it.
I can’t believe there’s still fans out there who think tannehill is still the right qb for this team. hilarious.

      • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

I honestly don’t care what they do personnel wise as along as they start winning. I am just a fan, I cannot affect what they do, so my attitude moving forward is to enjoy each game by itself, no matter who is wearing the uniform.

The reason for my post was to point out that your comments on Tannehill about being the primary reason the Dolphins have failed IS your opinion and you state it as fact. I really am not going to debate the Tannehill argument, because I recognize that whatever I say IS my opinion, and the reason some disagree with you, is because your position IS your opinion…that is why it is open to debate by others. Facts are really not open to debate.

31-21 Miami. Im really tempted to pull out an outrageous score here. I think we will be like last year and have 1-2 games that we just look amazing. With Pouncey and Albert back, we should have a better OL and better offense. Tanny is also due a solid game after 6 bad halves out of 8. Im encouraged by our run stoping last game but Mariota could be a problem. We will see if we do like last year or not.

  28. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Though I am also disappointed in RT this year I think putting it all on him has gone overboard. I’m disappointed in the entire team thus far. If we’re going to be a good team and turn the season around a lot more players than just Tannehill need to step up their games.

You can’t criticize the OL, the RBs, the TEs, the LBs and CBs which many here do and then say it’s all Tannehill. That doesn’t add up. Be realistic, we’ve lost games in a lot of areas so far.

  31. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Bookman, I approach sports similar to the way you do. As frustrated as we get after losses, it is what it is and you can either jump ship or still hope for the best. I didn’t think we were going to be a real good team this year anyway and thought we might get off to a slow start. But this home stretch is where they need to salvage the season. If we can’t win some/most of these games then we know for sure we’re not that good.

    Go Phins!!!

  32. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    tim,

one of the things that keeps going unmentioned and it is just nothing but blaming rt is this is a complete new scheme on both offense and defense. with the limitation of contact in training camp they are probably still working on things. i do think this team is void of talent but it could be as simple as they havent putting it together yet

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’ve said that before the season started. It’s a combo of that and personnel and some of the personnel is young and still developing though many don’t want to hear it. I can accept it because I already felt that way. The coaches are learning about this team and trying to field the best team they can each week.

My hope was that we don’t dig ourselves too deep into a hole that they can’t get back in the race and at least have a chance at the playoffs. That hope has to start with 4 homes games in a row and a bye week in there. This team doesn’t have to travel for 5 weeks. It was a tough start to the season with 3 road games against playoff teams, but here’s their chance that is quite rare.

  33. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    tim,

i think just bashing the qb makes it easy to be pissed. it isnt like you have to talk about all the other failed parts all you have to do is focus all your hate and anger on one person the hit the irrational button and blast away.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Some people need a scapegoat. I’ve never been a scapegoat guy.

I’ve heard local fans call WFAN wanting to move on from Eli Manning and start backups for years even after winning two SBs and Eli being MVP. It’s a common thing for fans when you lose and the QB struggles not seeing the entire picture. Look at last night’s game, the Giants struggled but the reason is the Vikings are a better team across the board. Eli had the kind of game RT has too often but it wasn’t his fault. The Giants were outplayed in every phase.

  34. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    tim

even if they dig themselves in a hole as long as by the end of they year they are playing great that is something for a first year coach. however, if they are still playing like they are now at the end of they year that is gonna suck.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah that would suck. You want to see progress. You want to see better overall team performances and some young players really shine. If that doesn’t happen it leaves you feeling there is no hope in sight. All we can do is watch the games and see what happens.

When you ask for changes at the top and a new direction and you get it, you better be ready for a learning curve.

  35. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The way we’ve put out lineups week in and week out, it’s obvious to me that they’re experimenting to find out what each player is capable of. When you do that at the expense of putting your best players out there, the team isn’t going to play it’s best. I hope we’re just about past that point, where we can now focus on getting the best players in position to win with the right game plan each week.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

You mean Ajayi, Parker, Maxwell and that sort of thing?

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yeah, it’s time to put the best guys out there and win. If we’re really better w/o Maxwell, I’m fine with that, keep him on the bench. Do we really need to see Damien Williams starting though?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Benching James, using 2 different centers with Pouncey out. Albert out last week. Drake getting starts. Cameron out and looking for TE help. A lot of youth at CB. All of that adds up.

I agree with Mike that the coaches are trying to find the right guys. They’re looking for players they can trust. They’re still learning this team. It’s not like they took over an established team that’s had success. They took over a team that hit rock bottom last year. It’s not going to happen over night. But like Mike said I hope we’re getting past that. We also need to get some guys healthy and going. We need young players being relied on to start stepping up as well. And yes the QB has to play better. 😉

  36. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

people have been praising Gase for “not taking shit”

but there is a trade off
you don’t put your best players out there if you do that

If you guys think that might have contributed to 1-3 doesn’t that mean it’s a bad coaching decision by Gase?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

No, he’s benching guys for not playing well so they aren’t necessarily your best players. He’s sending a message early that it’s not a popularity contest, it’s a performance contest. He said as much when he said it’s not about talent at this point, it’s about production.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

LOL, thanks. So before anyone loses their shit. Yes Tannehill has to play better as well. 🙂

But if people are blaming him for the 1-3 start then I have no idea what they’re watching. Is he part of the reason? Yes, but it’s way beyond just him.

      • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

I am trying to make a commitment to myself not to blame anyone specifically and just watch the game each week and hope for a win. (There seems to be plenty of blame to go around at this point…LOL) I kind of got mad at myself for how I felt about the Browns win…like it was a loss, especially after Stanger came on and said he thoroughly enjoyed the game because it was a close exciting win. THAT is how I am going to try to watch the games from now on.

  38. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
You spent months telling us thy were building this team to win now. So, were the coaches insane? Or, do you think something changed…because this team was NEVER ready to win now. Don’t you think if they were building to win now, they must have at least had some inkling that this team was able o do it? Because all the stuff I’m hearing now is that they’re young and not ready to win.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I said the contracts say that. They put a patchwork team together on defense with some vets to compete now as the new coaching staff started putting their program together. I also said it may take some time for this team to click because most of them have not played together. And yes we’re also relying on a lot of young players to step up and that may take some time as well. That’s what we’re seeing right now. We’re 1-3, not 2-8. LOL

I also never said it was going to work. 🙂

  39. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Bookman, the Browns have been competitive in 3 of their 4 games. The Eagles beat them pretty good in week one. Since then they’ve given the Ravens, Dolphins and Redskins competitive games. Yet people talk about them like they’re the worst team anyone has seen and it’s simply not true. They just lack the star talent to overcome a lot of things. But they do compete. A win in the NFL is a win and nothing less.

  40. D's avatar D says:

Tim how does what i say translate into its only Tanny? I have pointed out the CB’s, i have pointed out OL, I have really pointed out the LB’s. So i dont get why just mentioning Tanny in conjunction with the rest, means i am putting it all on Tanny. I only feel Tanny should not be immune, and there shouldnt be excuses made for him, like “only reason he is playing bad is because the OL is bad”, or if our defense would just shut people out we could win with field goals…..lol I mean come on you think that the other side is bad, there are several of us labeled Tanny haters that are offering the same amount of non-bias as you think you are. If he was playing well, and it was just dropped passes, or never having any opportunity to throw or escape, id be supporting him as not the problem, but that just isnt accurate.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

When did I call you out? I also pointed out everything you’re saying about other areas of the team. I look at the whole team, I don’t just blame the easy target even though he’s gotta step up as well.

For instance, at one point in the season the Mets were nowhere near making the playoffs because their lineup was back to having too many non-MLB bats, the top guys were slumping or injured and the pitching staff was falling apart literally. Those were not excuses, they were reasons. So how did they turn it around? They made some moves, guys got hot with the bats and some young pitchers from the minors stepped up and they went on a late season run and clinched the WC game at home. That’s more than I ever expected this season. But it took a lot of guys stepping up.

That’s what I want to see with this Dolphins team. Guys saying enough is enough and next man up doing their job.

At the end of the season if the team is down on RT because he didn’t progress enough and feel they need to move on we’ll know.

I’m team first. If we replace Tannehill at any point and the new QB plays well, you think I’ll be disappointed? LOL

  42. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    ffr,
People have spent the last 4 years bashing, ripping and blaming the OL for our team’s losses. Why is it wrong to do the same to the QB? Folks want it both ways just because they don’t like hearing the QB getting ripped. Tannehill has been a major part of this team’s failure. Why shouldn’t he get blasted just as much as anyone.
    ***
Plus, it’s the NFL. The QB gets the blame and the praise. Nobody complains when people give Tannehill praise. I’m tired of people acting like this kid hasn’t been a big part of this team sucking…just as much as any other player. Like it or not, it’s on him. That’s why he got paid…now he needs to earn it.

Those are two positions on a football team. If I said that people have spent the last 4 years bashing and blaming the DL, the LBs the DBs, I’d be telling the truth. What’s happening is that they’re all getting bashed and blamed. It’s just that individuals tend to pick one thing instead of saying it’s all those things. JMHO..

  43. D's avatar D says:

I also dont understand how the “Tanny lovers” feel like saying, well its a new system, its a new head coach, its a third OC, as a reason for Tanny not performing, but then the OL who had the same things going against them dont get the same comments made. This goes the same on defense, 3rd DC, why are they keeping Tanny from being successful? To me those just keep being excuses. You gotta choose, either the changes to the staff and system either affects all players or none, you dont get to pick that its hurt poor little Tanny and then be a dbag about some other guy that you just dont have any concerns for.

The defense makes a big stop, the offense goes 3 and out. The offense takes a lead, the defense gives it right back. That’s not because of one guy.

Henne TD/INT with Phins 4 seasons: (didn’t play much at all his rookie season and had 0/0)
      31 TD/ 37 INT

    *
    Tim,

The difference with the Mets (LGM!) is that the players filling in for all the injured players have stepped up and brought us a WC berth. We can’t say the same for the Dolphins. You see the upper echelon teams, and even the Browns against us, plug and play back up OL most of the time with great success when a player goes down. Maybe it’s lack of depth, maybe it’s lack of talent, and maybe it’s poor coaching, but the fact of the matter is that we have had this revolving, deplorable OL for a decade now. We have four OL that are former first rounds picks and our OL still blows.

    • D's avatar D says:

Our OL looked fine when we have the starters out there, well minus Pouncey who hasnt been in a game yet. Anytime Turner or Thomas come in you can expect minimum of 2-3 flat out bull rushes coming from the Dt spot. In Turners case he generally just whiffs on the block all together, Thomas just looks like he is having a fun ride on a slip an slide the way he very quickly gets driven back. Unfortunately thats who we turn to when we lose one extra guy on the OL. Just one. In this last game we had lost 2. We do really need tome players who are depth players, but we wont get it until our team has a solid lineup and we can start having higher round draft choices behind the starters. Its going to take a couple more drafts at the least and thats only if we hit on our prospects in both drafts. We really cant sustain injuries on OL, we have seen that every year so far. I still think we have something like 7 games total with BA, Pouncey, and James on the field at the same time, 0 if you want to include Tunsil.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I disagree with them looking fine. They didn’t run block well in the Seattle game (tough match ups, admittedly) and they didn’t look good in the Cleveland game. Seattle game was just brutal, they stacked the box and just came downhill at us over and over. I think you chalk that up to Wagner every bit as damn good as advertised. Browns running game wasnt bad, we just kept flipping the fuckers in and out and in and out so noone got a groove going. Thier averages were good, 4.6 YPA, so i think we were effective, we just didnt do it enough.

    • D's avatar D says:

No its not, it shows when we do it, its effective, we give up on it, thats why its an average, because it what we are getting per snap, it may or may not tail off, but you cant say its a pointless stat and we dont do it well enough, ebcause we arent event trying to see if we do or not.

  84. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We don’t run consistently well, or consistently poor, we just don’t run enough period. How ironic is it that Lamar Miller is averaging 23 rushes per game, with just a decent 3.8YPC, and we’re averaging about 15 carries a game total. I think it’s crazy.

  85. D's avatar D says:

We are rushing it around 16 times a game…..sounds like the number we did with Philbin when we were all aying we didnt do it enough, and actually the game where we rushed the most, 25 time, we had a 4.6 average showing that more we do the better we are, so no that doesnt support your argument Tim.

Passing is how you have to try to come back and make plays. It’s a clock killer when you don’t run well.

You know me, I want balance as much as anyone. But if you’re getting stuffed too often in the run game you only have one other alternative. We didn’t get back in the Pats game running the ball.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Seems we’re doomed either way, but we never really stuck with the run. A lot of teams, even teams we’ve faced, like SEA, weren’t running well, but stuck with it. I don’t remember SEA’s average per rush, but it was pretty awful, but they just kept at it.
