Game Wrap Up with the Little Prawn: Steelers @ Dolphins

steelers-at-dolphins

The Dolphins went into their 3rd home game of the season with a pitiful 1-4 record.

But that hasn’t stopped many Dolfans from supporting their team including the Little Prawn –  But you know…

I haven’t seen Prawny since the Tennessee loss.

I hope he didn’t take that loss so badly

What?!?!

NO PRAWNY DON’T DO IT!

prawnwalesuicide

Oh My….

Well after throwing himself into a whale’s mouth, I guess Prawny can still watch the game…

That’s a loyal little shellfish

prawnwatching-tv

And what a game it was

Where to start?

Oh Yeah…On the obvious!

ajayi3-copy

Jay Ajayi had 204 rushing yards on 25 carries.  What a day!

In this photo a Happy Prawny guides Ajayi to the end zone on a long TD run.

Ajayi’s day was one of the the best rushing days in Dolphins history.  It reminded a lot of us of the days of Ricky Williams.

Ajayi actually had over 8 yards a carry – and he just kept going and going!

ol-v-steelers2-copy

Here Prawny points out what a great job the Offensive Line did for Ayaji.

Albert – Tunsil – Pouncey – Bushrod – James

That was the vision in the offseason and Sunday was the first time we saw it and it worked!

It wasn’t just the ground game – the Dolphins did not give up a sack on Sunday

WTF!

I didn’t know that was possible.

tanny-v-steelers-copy

And that helped Ryan Tannehill a lot.

Tannehill did not have a spectacular day.

He didn’t throw a TD or break 300 yards.  But he was solid.

Escaping pressure, hitting tight ends you didn’t even know were on the roster, and he didn’t turn the ball over once.

Tannehill’s day could have looked statistically better but for some drops.

But the formula on Sunday worked

RUN THE BALL!

Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins on the other hand did have a few sacks.

In fact, Rothlisberger had to leave the game in the 2nd quarter

But he returned….to throw some interceptions

I would not call it a dominant performance on defense, but considering the Steelers have one of the NFL’s top offenses, holding the Steelers to under 300 yards was quite an achievement.

Antonio Brown was held to under 40 yards receiving.

The Steelers passed for under 200 yards on that day.

And despite missing some opportunities to score, the Dolphins won!

Howie Miami Dolphins blew their wad yesterday and we all crash back down to earth next week

      31-17 BUF

      • It’s a strong possibility. Bills always play us tough and to win this game we’re going to need to play even better than we did against Pitt. Plus, BUF gives us fits on defense with Taylor and the matchup issues at wr and their D is very good at getting pressure on the qb.
If they blitz the shit out of us like they normally do it could be another long day unless we can find a way to continue to run the ball successfully for a 2nd straight game. Having the o-line intact may help but you just never know.

  2. After yesterday’s performance vs Pittsburgh Jay Ajayi is tied for 3rd among rb’s with 4 rushing td’s. Lamar Miller has 1.

  3. Bills are on a tear. 4-0 since promoting Anthony Lynn to OC. In their last 4 they beat ARI 33-18, shut out NE 16-0, beat LA 30-19 and then trounced SF 45-16. So, BUF is on a significant roll right now playing very good football where we’ve been extremely inconsistent.
If we win this next game it could signal somewhat of a turnaround for us in our season. But, that’s a big if with the way the Bills are playing.
They are 1st in the league in rushing yards averaging 166 yds per game. However, they are only 31st in passing averaging only 177 yds per game. Their defense is 5th in scoring giving up just 17.2 ppg and they are 15th vs the rush and 14th vs the pass.
With our troubles stopping the run on D it could be a long day for us if our D doesn’t find a way to get off the field and stop the run. We’re going to need a huge game from the d-line and the LB’s and going to need another big day from our cb’s vs Watkins.

YET ANOTHER FINE EFFORT,PIGGY!! – – I think the REAL Dolphin team is somewhere between the sad sack goofballs we witnessed the first 5 games and the Super Bowl contenders we saw yesterday. I credit GASE with the removal of 5 horrid players from the roster!! – – Seems as though the remaining O-Line members “got the message” loud and clear, didn’t they?? – – Don Shula, according to legend, “would have cut his own mother from the team” if he could find an upgrade. And, in fact, those guys who were cut DID PLAY like someone’s mom and deserved to be cut!
    ————-
    HOWIE — HOWIE– HOWIE!!
    23-20 BUF

Buffalo may be the best team in the NFL right now. Beating the Pats 16-0 in Foxboro was a “SHOW ME” moment for the Bills. I think Miami will give another strong performance, now that some of the “dead wood” has been removed from the roster. An upset win by the Fins is possible, But I just can’t quite see them beating a team that has had their number over the last several years.

    • I’m hoping that after the BUF game the conversation is more about MarQueis Gray than it is about Charles Clay and the team not only continues to have the commitment to the run but the success they had running the ball vs Pittsburgh.
I realize Ajayi isn’t going to put up another 200 yds but on Saturday Pouncey said “let’s go for 150 yds rushing” and someone else chimed in and said “let’s do 200” and they got it.
But, it’s imperative they run the ball and have success doing it vs the Bills because the pass rush of the Bills just gives us fits.
Hopefully this isn’t a short-lived thing as a result of the cuts like last year when we have two big wins over HOU and TEN after Campbell took over. Hopefully this is going to have a long lasting effect that carries thru the season.

  7. Seems the only player to come out of the game with any ?? is Dion Sims who was being evaluated for a concussion. Gase may have found something yesterday with his two tight end package and if Sims can’t go that gets us down to Gray and Jones and while Gray is a very good blocker and plays st’s like a LB and also is probably the best receiving TE on the team at this time Jones is a big ??? at this time.
One thing is for sure, if we’re going to have any success vs BUF on offense we’ve got to run the ball and again keep the pocket clean and that means keeping extra guys in to block on passing downs, picking up those blitzes and we’ve got to recognize when BUF is bringing the pressure which is something we’ve not done a good job of in the past.

  8. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tannehill did not have a spectacular day.

He didn’t throw a TD or break 300 yards. But he was solid.
    *******************************
Actually, he threw 2 TD’s, neither one of them were actually caught. That point needs to be stressed, because he did play very well, it just doesn’t show up on the stat sheet

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Didn’t Sims catch one that was called back on an illegal procedure penalty?

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That would make 3 then, because Parker dropped one, and Sims dropped one. I don’t recall a TD being brought back though Bri.

    • o-line had a great day pass blocking and run blocking, Ajayi has a spectacular day running the ball and the D did it’s job shutting down Pitts offense but somehow it always has to be about the mediocre qb

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

To me, the statement “Tannehill didn’t have a spectacular day” infers that he didn’t play well, and that wasn’t the case at all. I have made it clear post after post during and after the game how the O-line got us started, and played fantastic and how every unit took advantage of their great play. Just keeping the commentary on the level because you’re sure to drag it down with your anti-Tannehill commentary over and over and over again.

    Great job Prawny/Piggy!

  10. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Nice job Piggy. Let’s hope for another winning post next week!

  11. Thought for sure another Maxwell benching was coming after the way he played early on but he redeemed himself very well

  12. I think what the team found out yesterday is if they run block and pass block effectively and play good, solid D they can win without having to pay a franchise qb the amount of money they’re going to be paying Tannehill.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think the team found out if they play complimentary football they can play with anyone, and there’s no need to rely solely on the QB. You have to have balance, and committing to the run accomplished that yesterday.

  13. D's avatar D says:

Two TE and double backfield is tge way to go for rest of the season. I was talking about both earlier this year. It’s something you generally do for a new QB to make it easy for him, but if it works it works and you don’t need to think limitations, just confuse people by running multiple plays turn the shade formation and you can still discussed things. Best bet moving forward us keep these formations, hammer the run until they have no choice but to fully commit to stopping it, THEN start to punish them with the intermediate pass just behind the LBs, and when they finally cheat us with the safety, burn the cover 1 with double deep routes

    • D's avatar D says:

Turn the shade = from the same

    • yeah, that 2 TE formation is something they could possibly get a lot of mileage from. but I think the biggest difference in the game may have come from the fact that Gase is making it HIS team early on and setting the tone and sending a message to players that if they don’t do their jobs they’re going to either be sitting or looking for a job elsewhere.
that SHOULD translate into a longer lasting effect on the overall performance of the team than when Campbell had the guys practicing harder and we took out HOU and TEN.
Hopefully they continue to get that message and the effects of the benching and cuts aren’t short lived. Sometimes players tend to have a short memory.

  14. D's avatar D says:

Maxwell looked really crappy probably full first half, but def full first quarter. He has flashed ability in every game, I think his issue is effort, as in desire to put forth it

Great Write Pig. And who knew that Little Prawn was just his screen handle and that his real name was Jonah……real apt analogy.

  16. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Bills vs Dolphins … McCoy vs Ajayi (and healthy o-line). I hope our team finally has the guts to “stick to the run”… especially in the second half. Def wears out, and good things happen (like the 60 yarder).

    • I agree. we need to stick to the run. Early on in yesterday’s game we came out and passed on 1st down and I thought that was it but we stuck with it throughout the game.
Said last week when Ajayi had 42 yds that if we stuck with the run he probably would have had 100 yd day but we went away from it too early and started passing too much again.
We may not need another 200 yd performance vs BUF to defeat them but we’ll need similar success in order to win the game. If we can get around 125 or so I think we should be okay.

  17. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

What we saw yesterday was what we’ve been hoping/dreaming/begging for … a dominant offensive line.
We know Ajayi had the instincts … college stats and film show that… without knee concerns he probably would have been 2nd rounder.
Nevertheless, lots of talented runners can be great behind a dominant o-line. Ezekiel Elliot is showing what a dominant RB can do behind a dominant o-line. lol 700+ yards after 6 games!

Ajayi now leads the NFL in yds/attempt at 5.7 😉

  18. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    LOL @ Piggy

It really was a game we fans needed to feel good at least for a week. It was a complete game win. We did miss a FG and got one blocked and we dropped two TD passes. This game could have been over so much earlier but Ajayi’s great performance put it away when we needed it. I’m sure most of us were a bit shocked yesterday, I know I was. 🙂

    • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

no shit, Tim! we really, really did need that game. That Tenn. game was one of the lowest points of morale I’ve had since we drafted Ted Ginn. lol (the ONLY time I turned off the draft and refused to watch the rest of it).

  19. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I thought it may have been Tannehill’s best game as a pro stats be damned. He was poised in the pocket. He used his mobility to make plays. He threw the deep ball extremely well and didn’t turn it over. Also he showed to read the D and make good audibles.

  20. Ken's avatar Ken says:

What Tannehill needs to do now is string a few of these games together

    • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

I’m perfectly happy for Tannehill to stay in mid-200’s in yardage with an occassional TD as long as we run the ball that way. 🙂 Man, it just transforms both sides of the ball. Our defense got rest and played with great energy except for Pitt’s first TD ‘drive’.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That wasn’t really a drive, they got us on one play. We also had them off the field with a sack but the Jones penalty gave them a 1st down and 15 yards then Heyward-Bey had that end around for a 60 yard TD.

  21. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

I’m probably talking to myself, but need to get comments in before my day gets super busy:

Tunsil and James becoming what first rounders should become is CRITICAL to the longevity of our o-line. When Albert crumples to the turf one last time, Tunsil to LT and James at RT (needs emoticon for praying hands)… we have our bookends for several years to come.

Walk in the door and go past the front desk (don’t go into the main bar). We’ll be set up with some substantial nibbles (same ones as last year) and cash drink service down the short stairs on the right to the pool table — just across from the small bar to the left.

Manitoba is setting up a Fest Bus (or maybe van) from La Quinta in Hollywood (where a bunch of folks are staying) to the game. Cost will be about $20 per person. Even if you aren’t staying there, you could park at the hotel and have your ride to the game. If you want in he needs to know how big a vehicle to reserve…..so let him know even if you don’t want a seat.

  23. New Age's avatar New Age says:

We ran over the #5 rated run D yesterday. We stopped the hottest QB in the league with all of his weapons available. We overcame our typical errors and bad RZ play.

We can definitely beat the Bills but we have to stop that running game. They give us fits but they aren’t really that good. They have optimized a really weak portion of their schedule but Taylor can be as inconsistent as Tanny and their offense is a one trick pony. I don’t know if we can repeat being injury free mostly and can correct the guaranteed mistakes but the ball we played yesterday will beat the Bills and handily.

    • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

      New Age,
agreed… and, just as yesterday, OUR run game will be key to fresh defensive legs to stop their run game.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Truth be told imo the Steelers D is vastly overrated. It is not that good and they have some major flaws. They have been good on points allowed but that D is not all that. That said it was still great to see us move the ball like that against any D.

    • I don’t think you can discount what the Bills have done over the past four games. First of all, they won four in a row and 2 of those were on the road vs LA and also shut out NE on their home field.
So, the Bills are playing some of the better football in the league at this time. True, Taylor isn’t doing much from a passing perspective but their run offense is one of the best in the league and has traditionally given us fits. Their D is also top five in scoring. So, they don’t give up a lot of points.
would also be a different story if they were barely pulling out those games but they beat everyone of those four opponents pretty handily. so, it by no means will be a walk in the park.

  24. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Hope the Fest becomes a religious experience like the one where Fins trounced Tenn. !!! cuz it would be against Buff. lol

  25. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

    Tim,
to tell you how bad it was before this Pitt game… I spent the week contemplating a “suck for (fill in blank)” mentality. 1 minute before kickoff I was even looking for excuses to be “too busy”.

Then I saw the uniforms on the field and 43 years of muscle memory kicked in.

I will admit, however, that with the elation of a truly “beautiful” game (Run and D, where Tanny isn’t the story)… a voice in the back of my head said “yeah, but they’ll probably get crushed by Buffalo and make you feel like shit again). This is a ‘new’ muscle memory that I can’t wait to get rid of.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      LOL

I think we saw how effective our offense can be with good OL play. I thought the missed opportunities, the dropped TD passes that ended up FGs and the missed FGs would haunt us and the Steelers would make a comeback in a game they had no business winning because we kicked their ass all day. But the team was having none of that and finished them off. Now I hope they know how to handle a big win the following week. Enjoy this win for a few days then forget it and get back to work and do it again.

  28. New Age's avatar New Age says:

The Bills just beat the worst football team in the NFL with a guy who hasn’t even played in a while. They beat a bad Arizona squad. They beat NE with a 3rd string QB who was playing injured. They beat an average at best Rams team without much offense and with Fisher being above .500 and needing a loss. They are not that good but they do have some very good parts.

They always play us well but let’s not get carried away here. If we find a way to stop that running game, and keep our key players intact the entire game, they could be in trouble. Their front 7 is awesome but their DBs have some weaknesses. Their QB is bad unless he finds a running lane or has all day. If we weren’t the Dolphins and found ways to suck, I would be confident in the game. I’m not but we actually have a chance to win which is far more than I thought a week ago.

    • dude, we barely beat the Browns and the Bills won four in a row, two of them on the road and beat NE at home. Who cares if NE had their 3rd string qb in there. We couldn’t beat them and they shut them out 16-0.

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

And? We barely beat the Browns without a starting quality OL. Did they beat any good TEAMS outside of the one without most of their weapons and a hurt 3rd string QB?

      • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Your right MikeE. When I went to espn defensive stats… started at total defense, then started clicking on different columns and such. Ended up with Fins at 17

Kiko Alonso 5th in tackles in NFL.

He will get better about being in position… but I’d say he is doing exactly what we hoped he would.
    ——————————————–
This is a somewhat misleading stat, because he makes the tackles either dragged for 5 extra yars or downfield as he get sealed out but has the speed to catch back up. He is improving but there is still a long way to go with him. I remember Wheeler having really good tackle numbers too.

    • D's avatar D says:

His coverage has been off and on too, sometimes really impressive, sometimes not so much. Again, its about him getting there, but ultimately i think he is a better candidate for an OLB spot with us if we can get amore true MLB to man the middle.

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I agree. I think he’d make a great OLB but a poor MLB. We get that one guy next year…and this defense could be ….solid lol.

  40. D's avatar D says:

Tanny looked more comfortable because he wasnt having try and carry the team and he didnt have OL issues that made it almost impossible to do that. You could see it, this offense works as Gase wants it to, have a lead keep a lead, and the defense plays better like that as well.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Think I’d be a lot more comfortable if Turner wasn’t at LT or Steen at Center too.

Obviously loved the game, but not like all of a sudden Tanny was different. He is what he is…..maybe if he doesn’t have to worry about getting pounded into the ground he will become something else.

  41. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

This is what I said before the game yesterday and bam!!!! It was really more hope than optimism but they did it.

“I don’t think he’s a carry the team type of QB who just throws all day. I think he’d be very efficient with a balanced offense and solid pass pro. That’s been my view of him since his 2nd season.

Let’s hope we see that type of game today. We have to run the ball today or I don’t think we can match the Steelers offense.”

I thought the Steelers would move the ball better than they did as well. Good job defense. Really good win.

  42. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

When they use tanny’s legs he plays better in general. It seems like the last few games he didn’t have any designed runs or roll outs. Yesterday he did and he played better.

  43. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

    D,
having the whole oline in there helps a lot. When albert is playing, tanny plays better.

    • D's avatar D says:

I really think it was Pouncey… i know a lot of people here dont care a lot for him, but he obviously brings a lot to that unit. BA is a beast, but even when BA was healthy, and Steen was in there, the OL lacked a little something.

  44. D's avatar D says:

Still dont get the Suh is overrated thing you guys keep going off of. 30 tackles, and 2.5 sacks 1/4 through the year. Thats on pace for 120 tackles and 10 sacks….thats just absolutely brutal for a DT. Therre would be 0 chance i would trade away that, especially at the HUGE cap hit it would be for us to do it. Thats the kind of guy you build around not send packing.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not sure about overrated, but have come to my own conclusion on Suh. He absolutely disrupts pass protection schemes. Just a force busting the middle of the pocket, but part of that is cause he busts forward like the Tasmanian Devill.

Teams take advantage of that when it comes to run game scheming…..sorta like a screen where you let the DL line rush forward till the QB throws it to the RB over their heads.

      • D's avatar D says:

You can be too aggressive but i really dont see that from him. DL, cant affect screens, teir job is to push the OL back and get to RB/QB, they can spot screen and slide out, but the responsibility on a Screen play is for them to disrupt the passing lane, make him arc the ball to get to the Rb , same for DE, though DE’s can literally slide out and potentially make a play on the ball. LB’s, S and CB’s are the ones responsible for busting up screen plays. Sweeps too, not DT’s responsibility. Clog and penetrate the middle, which is what he does.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not as much this year, but last year saw teams design a lot of slant run plays meant to go where a normal DT would be but Suh was not.

Turner, obviously not even worth a backup spot, unreliable, horrible player, Thomas, and Douglas too. Its hard to ignore Pouncey’s worth now, because Steen played well, but he obviously didnt bring the leadership in calling out the blocks like Pouncey, i think thats the hidden value of Pouncey, and this game exposed that.

Steen probably would be better moved back to OG, back up Tunsil for now but be prepared to move into that spot when Tunsil eventually moves to LT. Also at end of the season get a true OG in FA, and move Bushrod back to be a backup LT or RT. I bet the quality of him at the OT position will give us a solid depth guy there as well.

Draft a couple guys who can be eyes to the future, but current depth players and then we dont have these worries about oh shit this is a house of cards and one dude drops we are completely fucked. Steen was a good OC but being a first timer there, the lack of leadership from that position on the OL was noticeable.

And the defense — under siege the past few weeks — seemed to get stronger instead of wilting later in the game because they weren’t constantly on the field.

One more thing: The onslaught from Miami’s offense, led by the line charge, literally made the Steelers sick in the heat and humidity of an overcast day.

“It’s big whenever you can put those long drives together (and) keep pushing the ball down the field,” Tannehill said. “I think right at the end of the half, we were on the goal line after the big play to Jarvis (Landry) and I saw a couple of their linebackers puking on the field.”

    • D's avatar D says:

To give credit to Gase, he said this a few games back. This defense is not meant for offense to put them back on the field so fast. Its a pin your ears back kinda D when means they are going to burn themselves out if they have too many snaps out there.

This D is most definitely one that hinges off the O play. It can be said, help yourself and get off the field by stopping them but its kinda a gamble based defense, not conservative, which means there could be a series or two that the amble doeskin pay off and we get burned. The end around play was one of them, but it could have been kept to a minimal burn IF Reshad makes wraps up making the tackle instead of trying to just throw his body at him. We also still do not have the perfect parts for this D, so the gambles have a better chance of burning us.

This defense has a lot of potential with a little more development from certain players in this system, replacing some of the not so perfect fits, and continuing to have the offense give them a little more time off the field. Nice long sustained drives.

Not as much this year, but last year saw teams design a lot of slant run plays meant to go where a normal DT would be but Suh was not.
    —————————————-
Last year they did what im honestly surprised we havent seen much from teams this year. They just cut his legs out from under him. Constantly cut block after cut block. He still had a beastly year, wasn’t a sexy on like this one is shaping up to be but it was pretty good, arguably one of his best.

  51. D's avatar D says:

DT really isnt a sexy position, its a power strggle, its not fun to watch unles you are in to that kind of thing, just like OL isnt sexy and you rarely see the subtle things that made one play pretty solid and another really good even if the outcomes of that play dont say the same thing. He was good last year if you look at what he was being asked to do for the majority of it.

    • D's avatar D says:

Watch him on any given play, he has not one but two guy stood up, bent back and he is driving them back. Thats hella impressive. That means he won on so many levels its not funny. His punch is excellent, his speed off the ball is great, his technique getting leverage is excellent, his power is ungodly. Thats the plays where he doesnt get in on the tackle or pressure, but as you can see from his stats, he’s even getting more of that this year on top of performing the other duties that arent as flashy.

  52. D's avatar D says:

I wouldnt mind having Pouncey’s bro here, as an OG, his contract is a little high, and i personally think Mike is becoming the better OC with Maurkice having the better build and strength for OG, but those guys play pretty seamlessly together. They won 3 HS state championships in Florida for 5A schools and were ranked as the top 5A team in the nation 2 years in a row while they were there, they won a national championship at UF together, and both had All SEC and first teal All American honors while they were playing together.

Down side is it would really tie up a lot of money on the OL, but so will getting Zeitler in FA, which is another direction i wouldn’t mind us going. Having James and Tunsil on rookie contracts with 5 year options helps us do this though, and by time BA’s contract is over one of those guys should be ready to get their pay day so it would be kinda exchanging one big one for another.

  53. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I took the “Tannehill didn’t have a spectacular day” as he had a good day, but it wasn’t spectacular . He had a good to very good game. That throw to the end zone to Sims (?) that was called back because of a procedure penalty was one of the best throws I’ve seen him make. Fired it in between two defenders.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He played very well. This is the balance I’ve been hoping for where he doesn’t have to save the team and pass all day because it’s not his strength to just sit back there and throw all day. This was the model of the offense I hope we see moving forward. Of course we won’t rush for over 200 yards every week, but the balance that helps everyone including the defense.

      • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

The oline being there helps with that balance. If you can’t rush for more than 3 yards its hard to keep it balanced.

  54. D's avatar D says:

    From Ajayi:
“It was funny because the running backs were just pushing me like, you’re not done, keep pushing, keep working.” “My boy Drake, he kept telling me, go get 200 if you can, go get it, you’re not done with it.”

Thats some good teammate stuff there, and im really glad he got it too.

  55. D's avatar D says:

I think there was a lot to it, OL was a good chunk, i think Gase finally got the play calling where it needs to be to work with what we have, i think the RB got a chance to really show they can do this (even though i really think both Ajayi and Drake both showed the potential for it before) and the game kinda fell in the mold of what our team is going to be able to do best. Lots of things went our way and it wasnt any one thing in particular. I think that Tanny also didnt hurt us, and the OL allowed him to help. it was truly a team game thing, lots of one hand rubbing the other…..dont get too excited by that Mike.

    • D's avatar D says:

Defense made the biggest leap forward IMO, thats a tough offense to shut down and they pretty much did it, outside of a couple gamble type plays that went badly for us.

He doesn’t waste a lot of steps, he takes it an goes, he has great balance and has a nice combo of power and speed. He ran through guys and beat them to the edge all day. I’m so happy for him because he’s a very likeable guy, and we need him. 🙂

      • ukfinfan's avatar ukfinfan says:

He’s an Arsenal fan (soccer) but I can forgive him that. He’s exactly what we need – a back who will fight for extra yards, cos sure as eggs is eggs, teams will start to shut him down if we keep running like we did Sunday. Then it’s down to Tanny, and the way he found open receivers deep down the field Sunday gives me a little more confidence we might just be able to exploit 8 men in the box. He has to keep the safeties honest at the very least.

Rock — You getting a room at La Quinta with the crew? Even if not Toba is setting up transport in the TobaFestBus from there. Like $20, versus parking that costs more.

No, I am coming to the Saturday night FESTivities and then going to go home to Boynton and then meet you guys at the tailgate Sunday morning. I’ve been dumping cash into my Rockledge property like I have it. (I don’t) so far I’m up to $20K fixing it after my renters bailed on the lease and destroyed the place, (to be fair $13K was for the roof and exterior an not the damage, but the rest was!), and with no renters I am having to cover the $1,800 a month in mortgage and utilities. Just not enough room in the budget to spend an additional $140.00 to sleep one night 1/2 way to the stadium. (well 2/3rd the way) I’ll be parking in one of the cash lots and then looking for you guys.

Sorry you are having to put that our Rock, but let Toba know you ain’t in for the TobaFestBus when you see him.

We ran a very basic gameplan. The question is how it translates going forward. Teams will adjust. Can we adjust along with them and continue to grow as an offense? I’d love to see us lining up in a 2 TE set 70% of the time and grinding it out, but that won’t work in today’s NFL long term…especially once teams game plan to stop it. Yesterday was a decent mix of quick, short passes and misdirection runs…with just enough big plays mixed in. But, can the passing game make plays when teams stop the run and force us to pass? That’ll be the question moving ahead.
    ***
Plus, we saw the impact on the defensive performance when TOP was more equitable. No defense can hold up when they’re playing 40 minutes a game.

    • ukfinfan's avatar ukfinfan says:

Randy, great minds think alike (see comments above)! We also won’t be playing against a crocked starting QB every week. Although we are 3-3 this year in knocking the starting QB out if the game for at least part if not most of the game!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It was winning one on one matchups. The OL actually pushed the Steelers defense off the LOS and created a lot of lanes and options for the running game. They also did a great job giving RT a pocket to go through his reads.

We started off early trying to establish the running game and throwing quick passes as you said. Then as the running game started to take off it opened up everything else and the big plays were there for the taking.

Like Gase said, the defense only playing 53 snaps as opposed to 76 is a big difference.

Tannehill did not have a spectacular day.

He didn’t throw a TD or break 300 yards. But he was solid.
    *******************************
Actually, he threw 2 TD’s, neither one of them were actually caught. That point needs to be stressed, because he did play very well, it just doesn’t show up on the stat sheet

doesnt work that way mike. unless you discount all the great catches made on inaccurate pass which he gets credit for. just like some like to blame sacks on him but never give him credit for escaping sacks that would have been on the olinemen. unless you go back and make changes on every play as to ‘here is what might of happened had this come true’ one can only go by the final stats.

  69. D's avatar D says:

McCullers is huge, i saw him at Senior bowl a couple years back, maybe 3, and remember watching him while at UTenn. As a pure NT he is solid.

that has nothing to do with the miami dolphins that is an nfl wide problem. look at the houston situation. it is like that all over the nfl……..overpaid qb’s

    • D's avatar D says:

Its only going to get worse. College coaches aren’t coaching the type of player that the NFL wants/needs, they are doing what they need to to win at their level and spread offense, is what works when you have limited talent all over the field but a couple really strong athletes. The defenses are in similar position so spread works really well in colege ranks. Problem is this is the feeder system to the NFL so they have to spend several years getting QB’s to a very basic level.

By time they get even close enough to make a keep them or let them walk decision, they still aren’t really close enough to make that call but they gotta do what they gotta do to keep that guy with hope he will finish working out. Its rough place for a tam to be in, and it doesn’t look to be getting better.

Sometimes all of us lose communication and it gets a bit out of control with nobody understanding each other. We’ve all been through it. I’ve always liked you and your insight so I don’t want it to linger. I hope we’re cool.

We are cool, i was being sensitive, text doesn’t always come off as it should. It rubbed me the wrong way and instead of defusing it, i accelerated it. Apologies from me as well.

Cool! The written word can be dangerous. Been there done that so many times and you have to spend a lot of time re-explaining yourself. Not just here but in emails and on FB etc.

        Thanks, man.

I’ll be running it Thursday as per usghe, but I have to write by tomorrow, because I’m traveling to FLA Wednesday. It will be nice to write after a win for a change!
