We might target up and coming players in FA who are not household names but we like their recent game tape and upside. That could be a more affordable way to go about it.
I could see at least one really star signing.
Spending money to shore up a weakness shouldnt be looked at as overspending or not being smart with your money. Being overly thrifty can easily put you in a bad position as well.
I understand the need to make sure you manage your cap well, and you do need to make sure you stage your spending so that you always have something can fall off the books when you bring something new on, but i dont think you can replace a signing someone like Zeitler with a mid range guy. Its just not a easy to hit on those FA’s and thats why they come at a lower amount.
To me FA is not about a spending philosophy, its about is this dude worth what he is asking for and can we afford him for that amount. If neither of those match up, then you move on to the next best option until you find the mah that gives you the best option at the right price, not necessarily the lowest.

The league knew about him but not many fans overall did. He’s not a star, but he’s a quality player and signed a moderate deal at 4 years $16M.

8 mil per is kinda what i have been feeling Stills value on the open market would be, maybe 9, and for us with our WR’s and what he is for our system, i just dont think we should be offering that kind of money. In a perfect world he’s an alpha receiver and for some systems i could see it, and then the 8-9mil price tag is a really nice option. He has no experience being that guy so he cant collect on being that guy, not this time around but someone could see the potential in him in that role and pay him that much in hopes it pans out.
For us though, Landry is our alpha, even if he is considered a slot receiver. He makes our system work, he’s the primary in the play designs, things revolve around him. As such, he deserves to be paid as our primary, and we cant afford two players with primary receiver money in back to back off-seasons. We have to look at Still therefore as a guy who we can replace if need be, and personally i feel WR has become the type of position, you can do that at, especially if your not talking about your alpha.
I am not sure exactly what Stills will demand money wise, but i am feeling strongly that there is a market for him that exceeds what we can afford to pay. Thats for the coaches and FO to determine, but either way i hope they are smart with that offer and any others they make this FA.
I think we fans tend to downplay what the market is for some players. I’m guilty of it as well. The salaries always go up every year.
im not downplaying it at all im saying the value we have for him probably is less than what others have for him, because i think in our system, with Parker and Landry, he is not worth that much, to us. I am saying he IS worth that much in the market, i think he is every bit worth the 8-9mil a year to another team. I dont think we can afford him at that amount though.

Yeah i know ya didnt mean mid range as in player ability, but a young up and coming player with some success is probably going to be more than a mid range asking price. These guys and their market value is pretty well known before they get into FA. You get teams willing to overpay just to get them, but even they KNEW exactly what they were worth, they just exceeded it to get the quick commit. Sometimes they play a little trickery with the contract, smaller overall, more guarantees, or bigger overall smaller guarantees, but these agents are really good at what they do too, they know their clients value on the open market, they know what their client saves staying at home, they see both the long and short range picture and they dont get shorted.
Usually where you see the up and coming guys really pay off is short term contracts where they are given a “you are still kind of a gamble” contract, but with potential for them to pay off with bonuses, and a chance to really continue to show growth before they are up for another run in FA. It really depends on factors like current age, longevity (RB has a shorter life span so its important to get guarantees on contracts that lead into their thirties, and big 2nd contracts so they have the luxury of holding out for guarantees in the third one.
This shit is a science so thats why im saying there should be no bargain hunting philosophy. You should spend what you can spend to get the guy you need, period, You shouldn’t over spend unless this guy is for sure going to be a cornerstone for you. You also shouldn’t go bargain basement for a position that is a big need for you and you shouldn’t worry about hits and misses, unless you are making a bunch of misses, and then its still not the spending philosophy, its not having the right person making the picks.

D, if we release a few more contracts that aren’t productive – Williams, Misi etc., we’re going to have around $40M in cap space. So we can afford a guy like Stills. The contracts can be done in away we’re the first couple of years are not in that $8-9M range but about $6M. This way when his salary gets higher others come off the board and you can decide whether he’s worth keeping. Happens all the time.

Some of the guys I mentioned in both FA articles may be targets. We’ll see what happens, but there are a few affordable options I mentioned that I could help our team.
Outside of Ronald Leary i wouldnt take a chance on any of the other OG’s as an upgrade to Bushrod. I really hope they see the need for us to have the RG spot truly upgraded and go big there. The other positions, i think getting guys with potential without breaking the bank is fine.
I would not sign Still for 8-9mil per though. I know with contracts being offset from others its possible but i just cant see justifying that much on a guy that we could replace with a rookie and it wouldn’t be a large drop off, not in our offense at least.
It could be they plan on moving his use in our system up some, make him more of a focus, and if they did that i could see the justification. We will see, because they know what his worth really is to us and we have to assume if they let him walk, whatever he was asking didnt meet that, if he stays, he was.

I agree with D on OG – Outside of Leary, I don’t see any for sure starters in FA.
It should be exciting to see how we go about the offseason prior to the draft. That will tell us a lot about what areas the team likes and which ones need to be revamped. For instance we all know our LBs need to be upgraded but what is weird is most of them are UFA, RFA and ERFAs. Only Hewitt and Misi are signed past this year and Misi may not be able to play again due to his neck injury. So the time is right to revamp this group.

Not at $11.5 M a year. Don’t like Leary at that price either.
Think about what he could do for Ajayi and Tannehill. You pay him with Ajayi on the cheap for now and go for it. Sometimes all it takes is a few additions to take your team to another level. Zeitler is a proven performer who will turn just 27 in March and he’s a former 1st rd pick. He’s the prototype guard at 6-4 315 with a polished game. One of those big Wisconsin boys.
I don’t think Leary will get $11.5 million per year. He is a good-very good G, but that OL helped make him look great.
Landing a guy like him in his prime at RG and using Bushrod as a swing guy would be ideal. Bushrod says he really likes it in Miami and wants to come back after considering 2016 was his last season. He’s going to play eventually, it always happens. I think he’d be okay with that role. Then draft a C/G as insurance if Pouncey can’t get right. We still have Steen and Urbik as well. Let the situations and competition work itself out.
He would immediately become the highest paid OL on Miami’s Roster.
It’s okay because Albert will be moving on maybe by next year and who knows if Pouncey can stay healthy. Not sure he’s getting $11.5M per either.

I read last week that the Dolphins projected Stills’ value at $6.5 million per season at the end of the year, but that may be up to $8 million now (could be his agent putting out the later part).
Somewhere in that range. They showed comparable players and what they’re being paid, don’t have the link.

I really wan’t Stills back, but I agree with D; $8 million is too much for him in our offense. Parker was drafted to be the man, but Landry is clearly that for our team. Caroo can be the 3rd WR, and we can pick up/draft another to be the #4. Add a playmaking TE (you’re welcome Mike) and we should be set. We need to shore up the G position and add a LB and DE’s as well in FA and/or the draft.
We don’t have to redo Landry’s contract this year and Parker has a 5th year option in 2019. Stills made a lot of big plays for us. I don’t know that we just replace him on the cheap so easily. Just remember Gase really likes him.
We can sign more than one or two guys. Not sure why we worry that doing something on offense denies the defense.
Mikey, i love Zeitler as an option for us. I think i worded things wrong but i consider Zeitler the top prize of FA OG’s. I think he is going to be around 9-10mil a year, which is steep but i think it could be worth it to us. If he wants more than that i dont think we can afford him. I know its only off by about 2mil, what im saying i would pay and what Phelon was saying he might cost, but for me 10 is the absolute max i think we could afford. TJ Lang might also be an option but he is going to be pretty pricey too and i think GB might tag him, if they dont tag Tretter instead.
Way i see it is i would go Zeitler as long as i didnt have to exceed 10mil per, ide prefer 9mil per and some hefty guarantees as incentive, but he is probably going to look for big numbers. Leary id go 7.5 maybe 8, Lang about the same. Keep in mind Leary pretty much lost his spot as a starter and if it wasnt for injury wouldnt have started this year.
But he lost his spot to Dallas’ version of Miami’s Tunsil.
Tim – $11.5M is what the Cincy beat writers think Zeitler is going to get. Sounds high to me, but position salaries go up every year so what do I know? Leary played for less than $3M last year, so as Brian said, I don’t think he is going to cost anywhere near as much as Zeitler.

We can either invest in the OL and take advantage of it with some really good skill players or keep fucking around on the cheap with 3rd and 4th rounders and 2nd tier guys hoping for the best. This team can be good in 2017. I don’t want to see more developmental players, we have a bunch of them. Let’s be a top team by strengthening the core.
I don’t expect us to spend high on defense in FA but we will add some players and then double up in the draft along with re-signing a few of our own and getting guys back healthy.

We could franchise him next year while we get a deal done too. But giving Landry more money now does not make us better. He’s already part of the core.
At the end of the day I don’t care what they pay anyone as long as they field a good team. I’ll leave the cap worries to those who actually get paid to worry.
At 6.5 im signing Stills immediately. IMO thats about the perfect value for us, well the perfect price and not be insulting to him for what he has earned as a player. I really cant see him not holding out for more though. The market is also still in flux, so Cruz getting cut, puts a damper on things for Stills, but in general he is one of the top receivers on the market, and in some systems he would be a featured guy and pretty hard to stop. Put him opposite Amari Cooper, or Julio Jones and i can promise you he has 10+ TD’s and 1k+ yards. This doesnt need to devolve into a Tanny discussion, im not saying Tanny cant use him right, but in our offense, we feature different types of receivers and he would be best as a number 2, when they have safety in coverage on the other two guys, letting Stills over the top more.

Well yeah, but i guess im saying is he was a backup, and despite being good if your own team doesnt start you, it doesnt give you as strong a leveraging point to get the top contract, a good one for sure but not the 9-10+ range.
Can make a claim for best in the league, when you are third best at the position on your own team.
Absolutely agree. That’s why I like him. He was a high performing starter on one of the league’s best lines, but he doesn’t have leverage to break the bank.
Yeah Zeitler is not only the best OG in the FA, but he also is possibly one of the best in a while, especially for ZBS systems. He is going to be pricey, though i think lack of position flexibility probably keeps him just under 10.
Have to spend in the trenches. Every year, it’s proven that’s where you win.

He was also entering FA as a LT, the position he played the year before his FA. So its more like he was paid to have the flexibility to use him at LT but they needed him more at OG so they moved him there. You could look at it as high paid for an OG or moderately high pay as a LT. Was kind of a weird circumstance for him and worked out to his favor.
Id go after a Lang, Leary or Zeitler, and also re-sign Bushrod as a backup. We win on two levels there, by strengthening our starting group and our depth because we get a solid depth player that can play OG or OT. If we turn around and draft a guy like Pocic, we get a backup for Pouncey (which we need one) and guy who could fill in at any spot on the OL, but i would specifically be targeting him for a LG, eventually taking over for Tunsil once BA is gone and Tunsil takes over for him.
Again, tht might be sooner than later. We just have to see how BA holds up. He did pretty good this year.
Whatever they do, the line has to be no less than the number 2 priority (LB is 1st). It has sucked for too long.

Like i was saying before it just comes down to trusting them to pay what they need to to get what they need to. I think our biggest issue with FA is that we have whiffed so much in the past that we are scared to put any trust in them doing the right thing, and so its more like well as long as they dont get pricey ones, then we can roll around to hoping they get it right next year. Im tired of waiting for next year and i do trust these guys more than previous groups, especially with Gase having strong input when it comes to players on the team. I know who id like to see but more than any specific player i just hope we address the different spots we need to with the people thats going to help this team over the hump.
Remember Gase is an offensive coach. His plan is to be a top offense and have an opportunistic defense. That was the idea year one but injuries put a damper on that plan from being better than it could have been even though we still went 10-6 and clinched a playoff spot with a week to go.
Ajayi changed everything for me. I want to make sure he has those 2nd level runs available more often than not because he can help us get going on offense early and close games out. Let’s be potent on offense and faster on defense.

Was looking at some of the recent cuts, and one of the more intriguing for me was Bryan Cox cut as the falcons Dl coach along with the DC. I wouldnt mind picking him up as out DL coach, assuming that we still havent replaced ours. Falcons DL was a pretty solid and aggressive unit.

League source confirms @adamcaplan report that the Dolphins are hiring Andre Carter as assistant DL coach.
We all saw how different of a team we were when Ajayi was rolling and Tannehill was passing off of it. Not pass 45/run 15ish, but run 35/pass 25-30ish. That’s what we should build on with the offense and play fast on defense. Create havoc when you’re out there. We’re not a team that is just starting off with all young players, we have a mix. Go for it! What are you waiting for, 2019? Who knows what will happen over the next few years.
Did anyone see ATL coming off of 8-8 in 2015 starting off 5-0 and finishing 3-8 as the top offense and a SB team in 2016? They saw a window and Quinn got it, then fucked it up in the biggest game. SMH

Supposedly, the Dolphins want to extend Landry this offseason. They feel he has earned an early extension.
If they do fine, I’m cool with that. Just saying we don’t have to now.
I’m sure part of it is recognizing someone who has contributed greatly over the past three years, and making him feel appreciated. He’s the type of dude you don’t have to worry about losing motivation after he gets paid.
I just hope that this year isn’t the first year we see Tannebaum’s old habits surfacing again. We have some pretty big holes to fill, and we are down a 3rd and a 4th rounder. I don’t want to see him throwing too much money around and crippling us for the future if those moves don’t work out.

Tim, absolutely LOVE that offensive lineup you posted earlier. While there are several very good TE’s, only Howard seems to be ready to drive defenses crazy on day one.
I think if we go after Zietler, then the rest of FA is filling holes with guys who “could start” then draft those same positions to see if the rooks can win the job.

Piggy, when it comes to Sprinkle and Roberts, i think you get pretty close to what you get with Howard with Sprinkle. Howard is a little better blocker and probably more fluid of a receiver, but i think Sprinkle has all the tools that Howard has, maybe just a little less refined. Roberts is more on Sims level. He’s solid, and i think pretty dependable, especially as a blocker, i think he is going to be sure handed and a pretty solidRZ TE, but im not sure he is as dynamic a receiver as Howard or Sprinkle are capable of being.
Njoku does seem like an interest prospect, i dont think he is as polished as Howard right now, maybe in time he might be as good but i think its unlikely he will be better. Howard has the upper tier athletic ability same as Njoku, and he is already a couple years ahead of him in skill refinement. Id put he and Sprinkle on roughly the same level, although he might be slightly more athletic, but he isnt as physical as Sprinkle is as a blocker.

Lou i think that depends if their philosophy on DB’s have changes. They didnt like the smaller guys, and were looking to be aggressive and play press. If that isnt changing with Burke, i doubt we go after that guy, but there may be more to his game than his size indicates. Did they bring him in for a visit or is this just a theory you have?
Speaking of CB….maybe we’ll see Howard, Lippett, and Maxwell all on the field together next year.

Everett is more Charles Clay or a lot of people think he is more like Jordan Reed, though i tend to more see Evan Engram as a Reed kind of player. Both guys though are a little bit smaller as a TE, Engram is a better blocker than a lot give him credit for because most people dont watch the tape they just see his size and dont think blocker. He gets good position on players, but all in all he isnt a big bruiser in that capacity either. These are mismatch kind of players, again more like Clay, can move them out to the slot, hell you can line them up in the backfield and screen to them, but they arent traditional TE’s.
I have a few CB’s i think might really blossom when they hit the NFL that arent blowing the top off of most peoples ranking, like Channing Stribling from Michigan, and Dwayne Thomas from LSU. Thomas in particular i think is a really under the radar prospect who might be the better of the secondary prospects coming out of LSU this year, aside from Adams of course.
I really dont think McCain will ever develop into anything special, i would draft a guy mid to late round and put him in competition not only with McCain at the NCB position but with Lippett and Howard for an outside spot, best three would start in the case they decide to cut or trade Maxwell, and in the case they keep Maxwell one could back him up and develop behind him, and maybe get some rotational snaps in.
McCain is one of the most frustrating CB’s we have he looks brilliant on some plays and just lost on others. I would like to like him but i have no confidence he really takes it to the next level.
So do all of them. Maxwell looked like he didn’t belong earlier in the year. Howard could never get going with injuries and had up and down moments. Lippett is still green and looks the part at times and totally lost at other times. McCain is no different. I think you’re writing off McCain too fast.
Our secondary was so banged up that communication issues were a big part of it for all of them.
I think all the CB’s had their good moments and bad moments, but I think Lippett and Maxwell had more good ones than McCain. Howard is too incomplete, he just didn’t play enough.
Lippett was totally responsible for Brown’s 50+ yard TD on that screen in the playoffs. Lippett is a corner, he has to protect the outside. He went inside after Brown, Brown cut it outside, then Lippett picked off two LBs in pursuit freeing Brown to go all the way. Lippett doesn’t know the finer points of the game at corner yet. McCain’s job inside is a tough one, you barely get your hands on the receiver and they pick you all the time. Give him time to learn the finer points of the game as well.
My expectations for Lippett weren’t very high in the first place, and I think he exceeded them. McCain isn’t bad, he just isn’t good either. I think Lippett has a higher ceiling as he learns the game. McCain is pretty much what he is now.
Why can Lippett get better and McCain can’t? They’re two different players as well. One is a long rangy guy and the other the shorter quick twitch inside guy.
I like our secondary though I’d like to see us add some competition for depth. Keeping them all on the field together is key, just like the OL.

I think Lippett is still learning a new position. McCain has more experience at CB. Not that McCain can’t improve, but he is more of a finished product than Lippett is.
Bobby will be 24 in August with two years under his belt. Tony will be 25 in July with the same. Neither is even close to a finished product but they both have talent. 🙂
I think McCain has shown enough to get one more year in the rotation. However, I think Lippett has more upside. Yeah, he gave up a long pass against the Brown’s, but all CB give up passes on occasion. SAfety is in flux until we see how IAQ and Jones play together for a full season.
No question. I’m not saying he should be cut, I just think McCain is pretty much what he is right now. I wouldn’t mind getting a bigger safety which would allow Jones to play more CF. There are a few in this draft, like the CT safety Obi Melfonwu (6’4″ 219″) and the Louisville safety Josh Harvey-Clemons (6’4″ 228). In FA, T.J. McDonald is big too (6’3″ 219), and he can tackle.
Jones is better in the box surveying the field in that 10 yard range. He’s not really a center fielder. He’s more of a short stop. lol
Looking at TE prospects IMO Eric Saubert out of Drake is someone to keep a close eye on. Really fluid player.

Yeah, depending on how hard they go after bringing competition in, I can see that.
We need better players at the CB position. I’m not caught up in who is what, but I think we need to do what we can to keep trying to upgrade the position, I feel the same about several positions. In the end, it’s about upgrading the overall talent…how they do it isn’t as important to me.
Sure, you always want them to improve. But last year they was better than previous years, ranking number 12. And, without going back an looking, I feel like a lot of the yards they gave up in the passing game came from TE and RB, which should get better with improved LB. Overall I thought the CB spot was a bright-ish spot on a generally under performing defense.
I like our corners. We need a consistent and better pash rush. If we get that our defense will improve, CB’s included.

Agreed. Hopefully our rash of injuries in the secondary was just an anomaly. We need to build better depth back there, and that ay be simply getting some of our own guys more experience. I love Howard. I think that he is going to be a really good corner for us. He came in after missing a significant amount of time and played very well, especially given the fact he was a rookie.
K’waun Williams, who’s workout vid I posted above, is a guy the team is supposedly interested in bringing in. He played for Cleveland but was cut. Don’t know why.
However, there were initially fives teams reportedly interested in signing him and MIA was one of them. He visited two earlier in the week and I don’t think he signed with either of them and MIA was one of the teams he was reported to be visiting next.
Just an FYI. I don’t know anything about the guy other than that and he was out of Pitt.

Just a very smooth athlete at the position. Can flip his hips like a small running back. Similar to Njoku w/ lapses in concentration leading to some drops. But he can high point in traffic, catch on contact, and has huge hands.
Article on Williams…the gist is he hurt his ankle in camp last year, refused to play in preseason because of it, was suspended by the team, cut, had surgery to remove bone spurs.

I think you always look to bring in young talent at CB. Maxwell had an inconsistent year. He had good moments, but it wasn’t like he had a great year. Lippett has developed pretty well so far. I think he lets too many passes get completed on him, but he’s a pretty good tackler for a WR turned CB. Howard is still a major question mark simply because he hasn’t been on the field a lot. McCain is ok…that’s about it. Why would we not want to look at upgrading the talent at that position? I don’t think it has to be a first day pick, but there’s no reason not to look to upgrade there.
Agreed, I just don’t think the secondary is a primary concern. But I’d like to add competition to strengthen the unit.
I don’t think anyone’s arguing that we shouldn’t try to upgrade, just in the land of competing needs and limited opportunity to meet those needs, CB is a distant 4th behind LB, OL &, DE. I put it even with TE.
Having guys staying healthy would help quite a bit. We were signing guys off the street at one point we had so many injuries in the secondary.

I think Reshad can play anywhere, in the box or in center field, but I think if we want to keep him on the field, we better get LB’s up front that make some tackles, and maybe get another big safety that can also tackle. Reshad does have 16 INT’s, and and that’s not too shabby. He’s a playmaker, and also has 3 TD’s. I think you undervalue him, from the things you say. Not many safeties out there that can tackle like a LB and also defend the pass, and make big plays.
I like Reshad and think he’s an excellent player. I just like him up closer to the LOS because he’s good at reading plays and he blows them up before they get going.

I try not to get too concerned about prioritizing needs because I prefer to be more fluid in the draft. Your draft should be vertical and horizontal. Maybe you have a shot at the 2nd rated CB and the 5th rated LB, for instance. Do you take the LBer simply because it’s perceived as a greater current need and pass up the potentially better player? You need to be ready to pick any position at any time. If you lock into a particular position and say: “We gotta draft ____ before the 3rd round.”, I think it leads you away from your draft board.

I’m not arguing….just shooting shit. I just really don’t think this team is good enough to say any position isn’t a need. I think WR is probably the closest to being a solid group, but an argument could be made there too….given Stills uncertainty. As I said, just keep adding better talent because we need it all over. If a guy they have rated highly at CB is sitting there and represents good value, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with taking him. Acquire the best talent you can.
I prefer to take the BPA as well. The best case scenario is when the talent matches up with the need.
That’s why I think you use FA to upgrade areas where you feel you have a dire need. That doesn’t mean the highest price guys either, just players you deem to be better than what you have. That way you can take the BPA at multiple positions from the rookie crop.
You know who we could sign at DE unless he’s looking for OV money and he probably will is Chandler Jones. His production has been outstanding as an edge DE/OLB in his career. But he would make our defensive front much better.
