Dolphins News – Loyalty shines in Miami, we sign our OWN!

438 DOLPHINS v. BILLS 102216kennysills

So far in 2017 FA, the Dolphins have followed their edict of keeping their own players.  They have reportedly signed 2 of the key UFA’s, DE Andre Branch, and WR Kenny Stills.  Exact contract details have yet to be released, although Branch was said to have signed a 3 YR contract worth $27M.  Stills contract is also unknown, but guessed to be a 4 YR/$32M deal at $8M per year.  Not crazy money at all for a player who was a big play guy for us.

It’s a good thing when you follow your plan, and get it done.  Give the Dolphins credit.  Both players seem genuinely happy to be in Miami, which is a great sign for the Miami Dolphins franchise.  This is now a franchise that is a destination of choice, not just the $$$.  I’m hoping the very next move, or at least one of the next moves is re-signing TE Dion Sims.  Sure, we traded for TE Julius Thomas, but he’s not a blocking TE.  We need Sims back.

We have scheduled to meet with former Steelers FA ILB Lawrence Timmons.  Not sure I get signing a 31 YO 3-4 ILB, but Timmons is a durable, very solid player.  Obviously, he’d be an upgrade, but I think it’s time to draft some LB’s.  I won’t hate the move, because he’s a very good player, but I can’t say I’ll agree with it.  I’m curious to see how long a contract they offer the 31 YO, maybe they have young LB’s in mind who may not be ready to rumble in ’17.  We’ll have to see what goes down here.

Oh, on a sad note, we don’t have our regular 3rd or 4th RD picks in this draft.

Google Carroo . . . .

GO DOLPHINS!

Stills have agreed to a 4 year, $32M deal!
Andre Branch have agreed to a 3 year, $27M extension.

    that’s roughly 17M off our 38M?
    Leaving us 21M to spend?

    That is some OL help!

Well I said I wouldn’t biotch if they signed Stills for $8 mil……great sign if he really had a solid $10 mil offer on the table, not just for his priorities but this team in general. There is saying how much you love your team and then there is staying with it for less.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

He should end up making more in Miami, than elsewhere, but idiots will never tell you that. He fits our system, so the chances he plays out the contract are greater, than in other cities. Let’s say he went to Cleveland for 10, but only lasted 2 years, then has to sign a 1 yr deal in 3 yrs for 3M.

I always liked him as a player going back to his FSU days
underrated member of some good Pitt defenses
I’m not concerned about a transition to a 3-4 I think he is a versatile

but signing a guy his age is a different direction than I would prefer
I want to bring in young defensive players
I would like to bring in 2 LBs via the draft

but you bring a vet like Timmons in and it makes the position a little less urgent
so it kind of frees of draft options

I would not sign Timmons a the expense of missing out on an OG
other than that – it seems like a pretty positive signing if it happens

Vinnie — one of the great things about this place is that you can not follow the news and then kick right back in and catch up.

Which is your small ball team. Lots of Mets fans here……and if you like the Cubs or Cards we might not get along (Pirates for me).

    ———————-

I’m a direhard dodger fan. My blood is blue.

And yes Tim, I’ve been losing interest in football for years. My entire life I’ve witnessed this team win 1 playoff game. Just because we made the playoffs, I’m not going to suddenly seesaw back into hardcore fandom. I’ll take our success with a large grain of salt. NO way am I getting too invested in a team that historically sucked for the last 20 years. I’ll enjoy our wins, but I have other teams that I find much more enjoyable to follow.

This is what we wanted from the very beginning – I wanted to be back here with this team and we were building something special, and so that’s exactly why I’m back. … You know there’s always opportunities out there – other opportunities – but I was focused on what we’re doing here in Miami and what we’re building here and honestly, that’s really all I cared about.”

Mike – yes I think Peppers will go somewhere between 15 -25

Budda Baker is another guy some people have late first

But really Peppers is my dream

1st Peppers, 2nd Duke Riley 3rd Anthony Walker Jr.
we would be a lot faster on defense

we might be able to add developmental DEs, TEs, OGs, CBs, etc…. with the day 3 picks that are left – I full expect Tannebaum to use one 5th rounder for a trade up….lol

    that’s just bacon dreams though…

I kinda think at LB you are getting more bang for your buck in the 2nd and 3rd rounds than most positions and you can walk away with starters in those rounds
but safety, DE, OG and even TE are also okay in the 2nd and 3rd round – this year the DE and S depth looks pretty deep

That had to be a mistake, neither of those guys were draft, there really is no point in signing them to that contract unless they just are gambling that no one will make an offer, or at least an if they do they can at least match it, but thats like letting another team set the terms for keeping our own. I dont like that, should have at least given them a second round tender, it isnt that much more than an original round tender.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Maybe it is term of the art in the CBA, but if you do an “original round tender” on an UDFA don’t you still get the right to match even if no pick if you don’t? Seems the right to match would have a point to it.

I agree Tim thats what boggles me is both players are contributors on this team, Williams i thought really turned the corner in proving he had worth. I know its not like its hard to replace someone like him but i definitely didnt get the vibe that they felt towards them like that. Thomas is a ST contributor, and a so so backup at NCB and S. Just kinda a head scratcher, but they probably know their market, and probably know there are plenty of other option that make that not a big gamble.

    • D's avatar D says:

I felt the 27mil was an overpay, but an acceptable one, but 17 is very good. Way its structured too looks like they might be drafting a guy to play behind him that they expect could take over right off, if not in year 2-3. Those numbers that they have would be fine for a guy who moved to being a rotational or backup by his third year, and not too off of one who might be in that position for each year of the contract.

  51. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Almost makes you think we are setting up as the good guy place (and yeah put that on Gase).

Mitchell gets let go early with the chance to pick his new team.
Albert they at least tried the same with.
Thomas comes back to old coach Gase.
Branch doesn’t hit FA for big money.
Stills doesn’t either, and apparently stays for less.
All the exclusive rights guys are back.
Special teams captain Thomas they want to keep.
Kiko gets the highest tender, while looking long-term.
Landry and Reshad (even after injury) they are already are working on deals with.

Seems culture to me…..and not like “We Are Family” hasn’t worked before in the past.

  52. drg's avatar drg says:

Fins can match any offer Thomas receives, so I doubt he goes anywhere. I hope he sticks around. Liking the Branch numbers a lot better. Roughly 5.5/year is a much more sensible number for him than 9/year.

I don’t like the thought of paying a #3 receiver 8 mil/year, but think Stills deal is decent if you consider where this team is at. Tannehill isn’t a QB that can elevate any WR so chemistry and talent at skill positions is vital. I like that chemistry on offense will remain and the culture is definitely trending up towards a player friendly destination/team on the rise.

Now draft all defense and let’s get the run D fixed, stat.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We use a lot of 3 WR so it’s not like Stills only plays once in awhile. He probably plays on 75% of our snaps.

I felt better with 7per or Stills but 8 isnt a bad deal. I know he apparently took less per year to stay, but i bet the deal was not structured as well, probably had same or less guaranteed. Lik i was saying, its all about the player and what they prefer at this stage in their career. Bigger per year amounts or guarantees, majority of his contract with us guaranteed.

Both disappointing to me. If we re-signed Sims, we wouldn’t have to draft a TE. Now I think we do. Connor Barwin is OK, but I expect we’ll be drafting at least one DE. What we have as choices now is getting thin enough that i dont think we will find many that give us a real boost over what we get from Bushrod.

Part of it was Osmele last year who went into FA as a LT, even though he had played most his career at OG. His last year in Balt was at LT so he got LT money, and then they wound up using him as OG in Oakland. That kinda leaped the OG market forward some, but these days OG are about as important at LT’s anyways so it was going to happen eventually.

So our TE’s right now are Thomas a more receiving TE, not known for blocking ability, Fasano, a blocking TE not know for receiving ability, and Duarte who is also more receiver than blocker. Oh and Gray who is a kinda hybrid HB style guy.

Really to me depends on how we feel about Duarte, because i could see us going after Evan Engram early, to add another guy who can stretch the field but yet will be able to block better than i expect Duarte will ever be able to. Also Jeremy Sprinkle who is a nice hybrid blocker/receiver to be a Sims replacement and upgrade.

      • D's avatar D says:

Im not saying he doesnt want him, but he did have 2 bad seasons in Jax, so we will know when the contract gets re-done what expectation they might have of him returning to form. Gase and 99% of all other coaches would want the guy that was in Denver. He may not still be that guy though.

Lions are releasing vet LB DeAndre Levy. Matt Burke knows him well, coached him his first 5 years in the league. Food for thought.

What happened to Levy the last couple of years? He hardly played

@Schultz_Report: Sources confirm #Dolphins have signed 2016 Pro Bowl safety Reshad Jones to a five-year contract extension.

  77. D's avatar D says:

Tim looks like Levy must have re-signed in 2015, and then had a season ending injury because he didnt play at all in 2015, then last year he mist all but 5 games. Might not be the best guy with us and our situation with Misi and Jenkins to bring in another guy like that lol. Its a shame because he was a stud in 2014.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

LOL, yeah I just replied to Mike: “All I could find was quad and knee issues that seems to nag him. Maybe he’s done.”

The Dolphins to have signed safety Reshad Jones to a four-year extension. Signed through next five seasons now. So 4 years on top of his 2017 contract.

That’s $12 million per year, and more than half guaranteed means Jones gets the insurance he’s been seeking.

From what I understand, the #Browns are weighing simply releasing Brock Osweiler after trading for him. NBA style

They were more interested in the 2nd rd pick and they have enough cap to take the dead cap hit. Crazy!

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Might have not happened in years past, but these days teams have to spend up close to the cap. At that point buying a 2nd pick comes into play.

Looks like Dion Sims is headed to Chicago, and the Dolphins are going to be replacing him with Anthony Fasano, according to reports.

  95. drg's avatar drg says:

    Tim,

Agreed, Stills is going to be on the field for much of the game. I still don’t love the idea of investing so much money into our WR corps, but for Miami it does make some sense. I think that WRs are dependent on a great line and QB to buy them time to get open.

My personal preference would be to have let Stills and Branch walk for the type of money we are paying and invest in some cheaper labor. Guys like Landry, Jones, and Wake are worth whatever it takes to keep them, but others are expendable if we are taking a strictly analytic approach to this. There’s definitely a benefit to rewarding our own guys and knowing what you are getting for your money though. It also furthers the idea that we have a coach and team that want to be here and will play for each other.
