So far in 2017 FA, the Dolphins have followed their edict of keeping their own players. They have reportedly signed 2 of the key UFA’s, DE Andre Branch, and WR Kenny Stills. Exact contract details have yet to be released, although Branch was said to have signed a 3 YR contract worth $27M. Stills contract is also unknown, but guessed to be a 4 YR/$32M deal at $8M per year. Not crazy money at all for a player who was a big play guy for us.
It’s a good thing when you follow your plan, and get it done. Give the Dolphins credit. Both players seem genuinely happy to be in Miami, which is a great sign for the Miami Dolphins franchise. This is now a franchise that is a destination of choice, not just the $$$. I’m hoping the very next move, or at least one of the next moves is re-signing TE Dion Sims. Sure, we traded for TE Julius Thomas, but he’s not a blocking TE. We need Sims back.
We have scheduled to meet with former Steelers FA ILB Lawrence Timmons. Not sure I get signing a 31 YO 3-4 ILB, but Timmons is a durable, very solid player. Obviously, he’d be an upgrade, but I think it’s time to draft some LB’s. I won’t hate the move, because he’s a very good player, but I can’t say I’ll agree with it. I’m curious to see how long a contract they offer the 31 YO, maybe they have young LB’s in mind who may not be ready to rumble in ’17. We’ll have to see what goes down here.
Oh, on a sad note, we don’t have our regular 3rd or 4th RD picks in this draft.
Google Carroo . . . .
GO DOLPHINS!

I said right from the start I thought we should give Reshad a contract. Very happy they did it. He’s the man on defense, and now he’s here for the rest of his career. Very happy about that!
Boy the front office isn’t fucking around are they. Bam bam bam
I know one of you guys still has a Fasano jersey hanging in your closet which one is it come on fess up
So Isa’s contract comes off the cap now, right?
That’s $5M off the cap if that’s correct
$4.2 because of the dead cap hit, if that’s factored in
I’m liking the moves. …resigning Branch and Stills, extending Jones, and bringing Fasano back.
Safety just jumped up on our priority list. Jones contract comes out to be not exactly 12 per. You have to consider he was on the books for like 8 this year anyways, so the 60 -whatever was left on the old contract split over 5 is really what this contract is.
Its definitely big money, but again, it wasnt going to get any cheaper unless he had another bad injury year next year and who wants to hedge their bets on that.
Reshad just cares about the guaranteed money. He wanted that security, and I think he deserved it
I read in one of the articles about us getting Fasano that Thomas was rated higher as a run blocker than Sims this past season….One spot better.
They can say that all they want, but that’s not true i have watched Thomas block and Sims block, Sim is definitely better.
Julius Thomas? Ya sure/
PFF grade on that, but then Thomas run blocking probably came as a big surprise to whoever he was blocking.
“Help us Obi Meli Fonwu!” “You’re our only hope!”
Nice……
Mikey, yeah im perfectly ok with that contract. You have to make investments in players that are core to your team. You cant be spendaholics but you cant be pinch a penny’s either.
Thomas official now. New deal.
Adam Caplan @caplannfl
New #Dolphins TE Julius Thomas agreed to restructured deal. He’s signing a 2-year deal worth $12.2m, source said.
See its a show me contract, set up so they could have another guy trained up to replace him if need be. I think we are still targeting a TE in this draft and maybe a lot higher than expected too.
I never said we were locking him up long-term, just that we traded for him. $6M per is still significant money. He’s had some injuries in his career so it’s similar to a Cameron deal. Pay for the talent, guard against durability.
Good moves so far. Id still like to see a nice ripple made at the OG spot, i am afraid though we totally missed out on the perfect piece, but you cant win them all
It was reported for a few weeks now we had no intensions of spending big at guard. That appears to be the case. So we’ll see who their solutions are.
They said in interviews though they probably would get one from FA and one from draft, so i still expect us to pick one up it just might not have been a top money guy they were targeting.
So after all the moves, i still think we have a strong need at LB, however if the Timmons deal is done, we are trending down on that need. Safety is trending up significantly. TE probably is still about where it was, as it i think we will take one wherever the value find happens. OG is about where it was, though we are losing the better options, so it could become sorta desperate. WR is pretty much locked down now, if we did have a selection in the draft it would be a later round guy. DE need has dropped some, though we still probably look to draft one fairly early. I think the need to get another one in FA has dropped a good bit.
We need OGs and another linebacker plus safety. I can now see oline with one of the top 2 picks
DRG, Stills is a young guy at only 24 and is ascending. He scored the most TD’s on the team last year and was a willing blocker in the run game. I think it was a good signing. We all are concerned about the cap numbers these players get, but the cap goes up significantly every year and teams are required to spend the lions share of it over a period of seasons. (I know the numbers, just cant remember them because of the Flu medicine I’m on and don’t feel like looking them up)

Wasnt really directed at you in that kinda way Tim. I was just making a comment on the contract.
That contract isnt a long term one, and its not a big money deal, so its the kind of contract that says, we will be careful, like you are saying, but its also one thats set up so hat if they get a guy that can replace him they have the ability to do so in 2 years or less.
Agreed.
Thank God I am not a Browns fan

LOL!!!!! Sneak attack blocks. “Coach, it was Thomas! I didn’t think he would stop me from making the tackle!”
Well hopefully Stanger, Thomas gets some good “stealth blocks” for us this year.
Jabaal Sheard visiting the Dolphins.
He’s be a solid DE add. I dont see him as a dynamic player but he is really solid.
He can be a 7-8 sack guy, he’s done it before. I heard he plays the run well for an undersized DE.
I like Sheard. I think that would be a good signing
1:14pm – Dolphins interested in Dont’a Hightower – Reports have indicated the Dolphins are in the chase for the Patriots linebacker, but there are other reports that Miami has no chance for him. Whatever the case, he is going to be expensive for someone.
Looks like we are still seeing if we can get Hightower. That at very least at least sheds some light on the “what kind of LB” are they looking for as a compliment to what we have.
What kind of LB we are looking for? You mean slow and unathletic which does seem to fit our type of LBs
Fasano is back? What was old is new again
The Trio is filling holes with competent FA’s so they can draft BPA in the first couple of rounds. You will see a couple of guard signings in the next week or so.

—————————————–
Actually yeah i guess so Ken. Maybe they are looking for a bull in the middle and let the little athletic fuckers run free on the outside. If they are truly pursuing him, and he would be paid starter money, then you have to assume thats what they are looking for, because why else would they be looking to make that kind of investment.
Could all just be smoke screens too. We are very interested in Hightower, Lawrence. How much do you want to be a Dolphin?
Thats the part i dont believe. I dont believe the teams necessarily play that game. They don’t have to feign interest, the agents know who is left out there and what options are against their client. The players know all the game, the teams know they know the games. I think when you hear or see “smoke screens” they are really over zealous reporters wanting to inject small pieces of real information with a ton of their own opinions. I could completely believe that as a reason for that report, but i doubt the team is using it as leverage because it really doesnt up that leverage ability.
Denney has been re-signed as well
Of course he was. LOL

Teams already have reached out to Browns to inquire about Brock Osweiler’s availability, per team sources.
—————————-
LOL REALLY! thats flipping stupid.
I think the Browns probably put that out there. LOL. Then again that the Jets are that dumb
The Browns collect draft picks
Which is fine
But not if you waste them they drafted a ton of WRs last year
And then signed guys thi offseason
That organization is horrible
They are also letting T Pryor walk after developing him into a real weapon
James Walker is reporting that the Fasano deal is only one year. I saw it reported as a 5 year deal.
JW says 3 Mil one year with incentives
I think that was a mistake with Jones getting a 5 year extension. Someone jumped the gun to get it out there first. It has since disappeared. LOL
Denneyis approaching Yoda years as a dolphin
He will snap a ball and fade into the force
Who? The Mother-of-Dragons? She is nowhere near Yoda……. 😉
I’d rather sign Simmons than Hightower. They’re probably equally as slow, but one won’t be getting a big long term contract with lots of guaranteed money
Timmons at least can tackle, Hightower, eh . . . .
Ken
Whattup Hulk? Good to see you for a change!
Just been crazy busy. How about you?
Doing good man. I know you can’t blog from work (BASTARDS!)
Am all for the approach, but lots of money going out in contracts already. So don’t hold your breath on more than one big name FA. Plus side though is next year’s FA class only has one big ticket item……Landry. Hope you guys like this team, cause we should all get used to it.
If that shit about Osweiler is true, that dude might as well retire. Can you imagine being traded to a team just to get you off the books, but then on top of that, CLEVELAND didnt even really want you so they did it just to get a 2018 pick and dumps you just a few minutes later. LOL this has definately made this FA period a coo coo one.
It sounds true, it’s all over the place.
It is beyond bizarre. It makes Houston look like a bunch of idiots for giving him that huge contract in the first place
I mean giving up a 2nd round pick is not a small matter in the NFL
Ken, when it was being reported that Stills wanted 12 and there were also reports that Pryor wanted 10, i was tempted to say we should pull the trigger and offer Pryor 9-10 and let Stills walk. Im kinda glad we stuck with trying to sign Stills back and did get him for 8, but Pryor after seeing how he developed into a pretty solid WR this year, had me interested for sure.
Pryor absolutely dominated us…..but then his style fed right into where we were weakest.
Pryor would have been an interesting signing. I think Stills has great chemistry with Tannehill but Pryor is probably a more versatile weapon
Timmons is a good tackler. He has one less combined Tkls than Kiko and has 9 more solo tackles than him. Between Jones, Kiko & Timmons, if they all return to form you have 364 tackles 22 per game.
But Timmons is a 3-4 guy. I don’t think he is a fit for our D
I think it will be a seemless transition for him
its the edge guys in the 3-4 that a worry about
the ones that never drop in coverage
I prefer Timmons over Hightower but I don’t think either really makes the kind of impact we need
Not crazy about Timmons or Hightower. Maybe we will have better luck in the draft
Neither seems like a great fit, but we need at least one more LB before the draft…..even if his name be Jenkins or Misi.
I see Mike wants Miami to throw money at Richard Simmons to play LB😂
“Come here and let me tickle you Mr. Blount”
Blount falls down for a 3 yard loss

I agree to the extent you said “draft Peppers”
I was being somewhat facetious on the second half of that statement but I do believe that improved S play would make a big difference for our D
Yeah im not liking the who cares about the LB part either lol. We dont want them getting to the Safeties
In fact if Jones has 12 tackles next year im not going to piss an moan about him not playing well im going to thank god we got the LB’s we have
Im surprised AP isnt a Packer right now. Can you imagine AP and Rodgers on the same team.
The thing about AP is he’s more of an I-formation back and the Packers use a lot of shotgun.
Supposedly he wants to be a Patriot
Jabaal Sheard is coming in to visit and maybe come back home to stay a while.
Eagles ink Alshon Jeffery to 1yr $14M, yikes.

Well thanks Poindexter, how about giving us some names.
I really hope AP doesnt go to the fuckin Pats.
I don’t see him as a good fit for them. Not the greatest pass catcher
They would be using him more in the Legarrette Blount role. They still have Dion Lewis and James White to throw to
But I think he envision himself as a 3 down back and that is not the Pats system
I think where AP should go is Seattle
I think its his best fit, thouh i think he would be pretty sick in the offense in NO too.
Jabaal Sheard would be an interesting get with us already having Wake & now Branch resigned. Gives us a lot more flexibility on the DL.

He probably is thinking that the market this year was down for him, wound up being too many other options out there and didnt get the money he wanted so he will just play this game again next year. He did get kinda fucked when Marshall, and all those other guys hit FA.
I told my wife the Patriots were a possible destination for AP yesterday, and she without missing a beat said, wont happen, he isnt white. #ZOMGNOSHEDIDNT lol
More i think of it, AP would look good in a Saint Uni. They have a guy who can take snaps off of him in Ingram, a QB who can make them have to respect the pass, and an OL that isn’t horrible.
There is no such thing as weakening the Pats GD, that fucking team rolls with every loss. They traded their best LB to fucking Cleveland as a punishment, could have got more from other teams, but didnt care, and never missed a beat on their way to a Superbowl. I think the only way you could hurt them is to snap Brady in half.
Well and then Garopolo because we had to hurt him to actually start taking over that game as well.
I think Belichick is more important than Brady if you ask me
Yeah i agree with you.
I’m told #Patriots would likely want #Browns No. 1 overall this yr & prob 1st in ’18 for Jimmy. 12+ prob won’t do it http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2017/03/browns_will_still_try_to_trade.html …

The #Bears are giving Mike Glennon $18.5M guaranteed on his 3-year deal. So he gets guarantees into the second year.
I asked earlier, don’t think anyone answered. Do we get the full $5M back in the cap for Isa, or just his regular cap hit which would be $4.2M, or neither.
Im not 100% sure because im pretty sure there will be an injury settlement and i dont know how those count against cap.
Yeah, I don’t really know how that all works. If he retires, it should come off the books
Not sure how it works when a guy does not pass his physical. We are for sure on the hook for his pro-rated bonus though. And my guess would be for also his guaranteed money unless he signs with another team (which believe the point of the waived/injured” designation)..
Thanks Stanger
I am on board with snapping Brady in half
Maybe Sheard could help us with that, im sure after many practices without being able to hit him, that might be something he is interested in. Myles Garrett said Brady is the QB he wants to sack the most, just sad he wont be available for us to give him that chance.
Phins are said to be inviting JJ Wilcox in for a visit.
He’d probably be about equivalent to Isa, maybe a little less.
He’s young, and a big guy.. Can be the physical guy this team seems to like now.
Looks like we might be fighting with TB for him. They seems to be after him as well.
Fasano has the distinction of having caught the first NFL touchdown pass from Tannehill, who he considers a friend.
“Still great friends off the field,” Fasano said. “Always stayed in touch during the season. He was a great teammate and he continued to be a great friend. He was another decision factor in why I cam back. I really believe in him and this team.”
I love hearing stuff like this.
Me too obviously, which is why I posted it
Just noticed that deal with Fasano was a 5 year deal…. wow
Nah 1 year $3M.
I like the other former Dallas safety better, Barry Church, but I think he signed somewhere already
He did, i think it was the Jags
That’s right, I heard that on NFL radio. Thanks
Jax signed Aj Bouye, Calais Campbell and Barry Church
Tom Coughlin helping to rebuild that team.
My guess is we are likely on the hook for whatever is left of the signing bonus, unless he retires which would get us out of all of it. They might be able to persuade him to retire and give him a buyout or something like that, which might take him off the books cap wise. I kinda think we did that with Foster.

#Bears G Ted Larsen is expected to sign a 3-year contract with #Dolphins
He plays both center and guard.
Prof Lou will be ecstatic! One of his boys!
Oh was he?
C/G — is even better than just G. Is he an auto start guy?
He’s played both right and left guard too. So get him in camp and figure it out. But he provides good interior depth.
He’s got a bunch of starts, but then is coming off a cheap (like $1.5 mil) contract. He started at C for the Bears, but only cause of injury. Three years means he must have played pretty well though. Sounds like a compete guy. Bigger dollars and maybe a new starter.
D, you’re killin’ me today 😛 on your cap/contract talk, please stick to scouting. When a player gets a signing bonus, say $10M on a 5 yr contract, the only way the team can get out of counting any of the $10M of cap is if the player retires, the team can pursue getting the bonus money back equal to, in this case $2M for each year left on the contract. Other than this out a retirement is counted like a cut and pre/post June 1 applies the same way.
I read that transcript from Stills earlier and I am very pleased. Not only does it show allot of faith in this team but a Hell of allot of faith in his Quarterback all while possibly signing for less than he could have gotten elsewhere
EAT SHIT BRANDON MARSHALL!
Hope you have another CRAPPY season!
GO PHINS!!!
When you sign your own guys you actually have a chance to start the season off fast, something we really need to do this year. Game 1 at home against the Cheats and kick their ass. Ok maybe game 2 since the Cheats will host the Thursday Night opener.
We can really see what a good locker room does for a team. It’s no surprise Brandon Marshall has never been in the playoffs.
Houston hit the reset button on their disastrous decision to sign Brock Osweiler last offseason, sending the embattled quarterback to Cleveland along with a 2017 sixth-round pick and a second-rounder in the 2018 draft for a 2017 fourth-rounder. Clev. assumes the fully guaranteed $16M contract and it counts against their cap whether they keep him or not. Clev. paid $16M for 2 picks, and gave up one. Seems like a lot to pay for a draft pick.
Dumb trade imo but dumb organization
Tim
Lou wanted Larsen, Schwenke and Rick Wagner, who signed with the Lions. I don’t think Schwenke has been signed yet.
Singing a player who can play OG and C is critical
So boaring . . .
snoutty thing to say
I definitely wouldn’t mind if we sign Sheard. I want maximum flexibility going into the draft
Yeah agreed
It would be nice to sign an OG though
I don’t know who is left
I see one site saying Larsen already a Phin. Done deal
Fantastic day in Dolphins land. I love that even though we lose Sims (can’t blame him for taking probably close to double what he would have gotten from us), we have a plan in place and immediately sign the best in-line blocking TE in the league last year. He may not have caught many passes last year, but we know he’s capable of being similar to Sims in the passing game, and he’s at least as good a blocker.
Getting Stills to take something less to resign with us, woohoo! one hole we now don’t have to fill, we keep continuity with an integral cog to last year’s success, and help continue to change the perception of what it means to play for Miami and be a Dolphin player, all in one move.
Ted Larsen will hopefully fill another hole. I don’t know enough about him other than what I’ve read. If so, we literally only have one more must have position for the offense, in another guard.
I love the way this administration is operating. We still have the rest of FA and the draft to address the D. Hopefully these moves translate to improvement on the field!
Bears signed TE Dion Sims, formerly of the Dolphins, to a three-year, $18 million contract.
It includes $10 million guaranteed. It’s a ton of money for a blocking tight end who was forced into a pass-catching role for the Dolphins last season. Sims has a sure pair of hands, but is not a playmaker. He’s averaged a well below average 9.4 yards on his 74 career grabs. He’ll be second in line for targets behind Zach Miller.
Must have interpreted the get the bonus back part wrong, looks like you can get it back as I was saying but it’s not automatic like I thought from what I read.
Requires arbitration
Good luck to Dion Simms. I appreciated what he brought to the team and I wish we could have kept him but I get why we didn’t and I am glad he got a nice contract
Ditto, but WTF were the Bears thinking paying him that much $$?
I know that is a lot more than what he would get
The Fasano signing is kind of what Randy was talking about with centers from the draft, get the guy that is better at the position you’re trying to fill, instead of jack of all trades. Simms is a better pass catcher, but Fasano is a better blocker. The position is blocking TE first, so might as well get the better blocker, especially since we have enough guys to catch passes. Even if they’re the same blocking we got Fasano for less.
I think Simms is the better blocker and better overall TE at this point in their respective careers it was clearly a question of money for a guy who is likely to be the #2 TE
Fasano was ranked higher last year as a blocker.
He may have been but I would take Simms as a blocker over Fasano in a heartbeat. PFF ratings are not always an accurate representation imo
Sheard has 36 sacks in 6 years and has been pretty consistent. Except for 2014 (2) he had 5-8.5 sacks a year. He looks the part.
I like him. He is a quality player
Steve he’s built for our DL 6’3 265 27yo….my only concern was Belicheat benched him down the stretch last year….but maybe that’ll make him hungry, even though he still got a ring.
Stills for 8 or Sims for 6? Not really fair I guess, since one took a home town discount and the other took an inflated shitty team contract.

@ArmandoSalguero
Jabaal Sheard’s visit with the Dolphins has concluded. No deal as of, well, right now.
Sounds like his asking price might have been too high.
Steve,
The Bears were crazy to give Sims that kind of money. Good for Sims to cash in, and I think we’re perfectly comfortable with Fasano taking over the inline TE blocking duties. We may lose a little in the passing game, although I think Fasano’s numbers will go up this year in our offense, but we at least break even in blocking, and probably even get a little more stout.
I didn’t spend a lot of time last season watching and evaluating Fasano’s game in comparison to Sims, lol, but PFF had Fasano ranked as the 40th TE based purely on his blocking. Sims was ranked 67 by comparison, and put up far more in the pass game, so for whatever that’s worth, it looks good right now.
Somebody posted that PFF had Fasano as #1 run blocking and #3 pass blocking TE.
Sweet, I read he was the #1 blocking inline TE, and was wondering on the breakdown of pass vs rush. I can’t wait to see what he and Thomas look like on the field.
I see a lot more 2-TE sets with Fasano doing a lot of blocking and Thomas doubling up on that in the run game and moving around as a 3rd WR. What does the defense do, stay in base or add a DB to cover Thomas? He can beat both because he’s bigger than most LBs and any DB at 6-5 255, and he can run. Then if they go extra DB we run it. Thomas can block DBs. LOL
Ajayi just needs a crack and momentum and we saw what he can do. Gase is going to build this offense around what we do well and this formation might be half of it. Then rotate Landry, Stills, Parker and Carroo, add some special packages for Grant, Drake and Williams give Ajayi a breather and the options are endless. We have a lot of playmakers.
We should be able to threaten all areas and multiple levels of the field. This will be most of the offense’s 2nd year in the system, we added a seam threat TE which was the one area of the field we didn’t threaten last year. Fingers crossed that we get guards that can man both spots and Pouncey can come back and play to shore up consistency in the run game. If that happens and if Parker can develop more consistency, our offense should be really dynamic, and tough to stop. A lot of ifs, but I look forward of the rest of the offseason.
Safety target.

LOL, holy crap, we extended Jones today too?! F$#% ya! I just now saw that.
You just did a silly dance didn’t you? LOL
Hehe, a caper.
Yeah Kong, no doubt. Thomas can open up the field and create mismatches and he’s a red zone threat in a multitude of ways – skinny posts, quick outs and fades.
This isn’t just Peyton Manning making him who he is. He still has to run routes, make catches and display speed.

The Dolphins are definitely targeting do your job type players in FA, pros who play a role and know what they’re doing. Then look for new studs in the draft.

*
That’s nice to hear.
Yeah it is. When he left there was a leadership void in the locker room. I understood Miamis stance when they didn’t give him a big contract in 2013 as the team needed a vertical threat at TE. If they had only played Claythere instead of FB re-signing Fasano would’ve made sense.
True. If we can add one solid LB in FA I will feel really good going into the draft.
Exactly. The swap in draft choices isn’t bad neither. Ecayse we gave up a late 6th for an early 7th.
Yeah I just saw that with Haynes
Haynes is pretty solid. Sorry my brain hasn’t woke up enough for long replies yet lol
Haynes contract has him at 5.5 against the cap this year. 5 against the cap next year, though there is no guaranteed money in next year’s salary so it’s a really safe trade to get a vet DE for almost nothing in swap
He is getting a little long in the tooth though, have to see what he has left in the tank
Haynes is underwear we got Hayes
Shears must not have impressed them or the phone rang in the middle of the interview saying trade accepted lol. Sorry bro but this interview is over lol
He wanted at least 9M, so price was too high.
The Los Angeles Rams have agreed to terms to trade DE William Hayes and the first of the team’s seventh-round selection (No. 223) to acquire the Miami Dolphins sixth-round selection (No. 206) in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Sorry Son, Hayes my phone auto corrects to Haynes I guess. Didn’t even notice I did it until you typo policed me 🙂
Imo Wilcox is a slight upgrade over Isa, Allen is a mild downgrade. I think though if ya look at guys the brought in via trade or Fa from the outside I mean, then you see that they are getting guys to be stop gaps with potential for more, but leaving it open so they can hopefully replace via draft.
They are looking to do exactly what most here have hoped and prayed they could get themselves into position to do, which is start growing our own, and keeping them long enough to see the fruits of our labor. I like it personally, and I think a few years of the big moves are actually what got us here now. We had big voids and now it’s just starting to come together.
