The Wedge Scouting Report: Jabrill Peppers, Safety

Change is good.

You Earthlings do it – so do aliens like me

Wedgegetshairdone

And I needed a new hairdo…

No I’m not vain

I just need something versatile for a galaxies

and what is a better example of versatility

WedgePeppersCut

Peppers!!!!

What do you think of my new hairdo?  I love it!

Its the kind of do that you can wear when you man a high powered phaser cannon or when you are relaxing eating Xerbe Squids on your day off!

Versatile like Jabrill Peppers

Peppers3

So who is Peppers you say?

Is he a Safety or a CB?  Is he a Linebacker?

Does he play defense or offense?  Is he a running back?

Does he play special teams?  Is he a kick returner or a punt returner?

Who is Jabrill Peppers???  Well as Gary Oldman once said:

everyone2

Peppers can do it all.  And that is an asset that he brings to whichever team drafts him

While playing for the Michigan Wolverines Peppers was a star.

In three years he had 86 solo tackles, 119 combined tackles, 18.5 tackled for a loss, 3 sacks, 1 interception, 11 passes defended, 10 catches, 82 receiving yards, 45 carries, 239 rushing yards, 5 offensive touchdowns, 39 punt returns, 510 punt return yards, 18 kick returns, 483 kick return yards, 1 special teams Touchdowns and 6 total Touchdowns.

I’m out of breathe…

Peppers4

Consider Jabrill Peppers to be the Alpha Male of the 2017 Draft.  He may be the most talented player available in 2017.

Peppers showed off that talent at the combine in Indianapolis.

Peppers, who tested with the Linebackers and the Defensive Backs ran a blazing 4.46 in the 40 yard dash, recorded 19 bench presses, a 35.5 vertical jump and a 128 inch broad jump.

Among Linebackers Peppers a the top 40 yard time, the 4th best vertical jump and the longest broad jump

Peppers5

In the NFL, Peppers will probably be a Safety and Nickelback

well that is what this alien hears anyway…but who knows.

What is really interesting is whether Peppers will play special teams in the NFL making him a dual threat he certainly has the skill set to return kicks.

Peppers6

But me…

I like Peppers on defense.  I can just imagine a healthy Reshad Jones pairing up with the athletic Peppers.  No one will be able to get to the edge against the Dolphins defense!

Peppers isn’t afraid to hit ball carriers and in fact often knifes behind the line of scrimmage fluidly.  I imagine the Peppers Safety Blitz in the NFL will be spicy!

Peppers7

So what kind of Alien Weapon is this ultimate swiss army knife

….um you guessed it

Always keep your Peppers handy

I’m projected to get up to 18″ of snow through Wednesday morning. Welp, I’ve already got 17″ and it’s not supposed to stop until Wednesday morning. So is the weatherman right that I’ll only get one more inch of snow, or is he right that it won’t stop snowing until tomorrow morning? Hmmm…

He’s a perfect fit for the offense, but as always (says a guy who has had him in FF twice)….if he has his mind set right and does not get injured.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Absolutely agreed, Stanger… perfect fit for them and he’s got to keep his mind/body right. He could be VERY dangerous in Seattle’s Offense.

I thought AP was a better fit for Seattle

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

AP is a better fit ANYWHERE… except for the Patsies*… if you catch my snow drift. 😉

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’m guessing AP to the Chiefs but that is a shot in the dark based on what Charles did with them…..speaking of another FA who would be interesting on our team as a 3rd down back for a one-year prove it on our team (or sadly the Pats too).

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

The problem with that is AP is not really a good receiver and Andy Reid values using the RB in the passing game. Which is also why I don’t think AP goes to the Pats

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

You got me there on AP and pass catching. Guess was thinking a similar running style. That would make Charles the bigger choice for both the Chiefs and the Pats. Wonder how healthy he is these days.

  13. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

AP is also an I-formation type of runner. He’s not great running out shotgun which so many teams use these days. You have to build your offense around him and I think those days are over. He’ll likely be a part of a RB tandem somewhere.

  14. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

The mere thought of AP going to the Patsies* has me cringing. And if he’s signed to be their 3rd-down RB, he’ll be FRESH every time he’s on the field… VERY DANGEROUS, hands or not.

  15. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Ultimately I think AP goes back to Vikings. I do think Green Bay is a possibility as well

  16. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, the Pats run two offenses, their spread with the smaller, quicker backs who catch passes and run here and there. Then they go big and just pound the ball with Blount.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

YUP! You get the idea… I do NOT want to see AP playing the ‘Blount role’ as a Patsie*. VERY DANGEROUS.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So is Blount. The Pats usually find players on the cheap to do whatever they want to accomplish. Bastards! LOL

I see no need to add back end of free agency CB this year when draft is going to offer 2nd rd CBs in 3rd round.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

My man Desmond King in the 3rd would be NICE, IF he falls that far. He’d be our nickel CB, if not outright FS.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

This is a really good year for CB’s

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah I heard you could still get a good one in the 3rd and 4th rounds. But there is always a run on corners and when it starts it seems as if all teams start drafting them.

  19. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Just got in from round two of shoveling. Thank God this snow is light! We must have at least 15″ now, with at least another 6-8 hours to go.

  20. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So based on what we’ve done in FA I’m guessing that we’ll draft the best front 7 player on defense at #22 if we stay there. I don’t think Howard will fall that far, not sure we go safety that early and I’m not sure there will be a guard good enough to take one that high. Lots of teams need OL so I would think Lamp would be off the board as well.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I think Lamp is there @22 if we want him.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Well he’s a LT who scouts feel can play guard like Zack Martin. He’s arguably the best OL in this draft. I’d be surprised if he falls that far.

  21. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’m not sure Lamp will be off the board Tim

But I think mentioning him in that conversation is correct

Lamp and Peppers are the 2 guys that will have is looking anywhere outside of front 7 d

Other than those 2 I think we probably take a LB or DE

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      Don’t count out DT.

Lots of teams need OL and Lamp could help any of them. Think Indy at #15. They almost got Luck killed.

  22. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So here’s our updated draft order.
    1. #22
    2. #54
    3. #97
    5a. #166
    5b. #178

Yikes! Stay safe bro. Let it finish up and then deal with it. Lots of dangerous stuff can go on in storms like this – wind gusts blowing shit around, trees and/or branches coming down, power, etc. I saw a guy get stuck driving earlier. He got his car going eventually after 10 minutes. But that’s a sign to go home.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

THANK YOU, Tim. I’ll be all good… it’ll just take me some time to dig out. And thankfully, it’s a LIGHT snow. Fears were that it was going to be a HEAVY snow, downing power lines… that would suck being stuck without heat, power, and running water.

It’s all good though… I’m prepared for the worst and will survive, regardless. Propane backup heaters, kerosene lamps, coupled with food for WEEKS. Props to a certain someone we both know and respect.

It cant really hurt him, he’s the top guy out there right now. I hate picking Tak at 22 to be honest. I surely hope we get one of the better guys to fall. He isnt awful but i like him a LOT less than Barnett, or Charlton as a true DE, but thats what the draft gave me. I came close to taking Lamp over him but i still feel we need some youth at DE in a bad way, so all things being equal between the two as selections i went with position pick.

  40. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If you really think about it, what prospect do you think this org would prefer within our range at #22?

Mine is a Taco, lol. Charlton isn’t overly quick, but he is a good football player with a lot of size at 6-6 277 at the combine. He could play both end and inside like Hayes. He’ll be 290 in a year or two. He would be an upgrade over Fede. Then you have Wake, Branch, Hayes, Charlton at DE – then Suh, Phillips and one more as a rotation at DT. We;re going to blitz LBs and DBs at times. Need players who can handle blocks and contain the run much better. LOL

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

To put that in “The Gorl Next Door” terms – the juice word not be worth the squeeze. Give me Lawson there instead.

      • D's avatar D says:

Son, I love me some SEC players, but i just do not think Lawson is a NFL DE, and i haven’t seen anything of him in coverage to know if he has the instincts to play OLB in a 4-3. I think he is a pure 3-4OLB pass rush specialist, who actually does a pretty solid job setting the edge, but i have seen him take plays off if its away from him, he doesn’t give good pursuit, and again, i dont think he will match up well against NFL RT/LT, being under sized, he would need to be really strong, and he doesnt manhandle players the way he would need to if he doesnt bulk up a pretty decent amount.

  41. D's avatar D says:

For me Tim i really want one of the top “true” DE’s. I really dont want a tweener like Tak, Lawson, or Tim Williams. I want a Charlton, or Barnett or maybe even Solomon Thomas, or Malik McDowell which are really bordering on being DT’s. Charles Harris is actually the closest of the three top level tweeners i would take because i have seen him as a hand on the ground DE and he is solid rushing the passer from that position. I like Tak’s athletic traits, but i dont know that i feel certain he develops into a great DE. At very least i think he is a 1-2 year development guy. Id be all over him in the second, but i dont feel as good about him in the first.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m not even saying Taco is my favorite player, just saying I could see him being the target. We could always add a tweener quick edge guy in the 3rd or even 5th.

I don’t know why you think Lawson a tweener
    He’s 261 – 2 pounds less than wake

Guys like Tak and Willims have played their college careers at OLB, so although I like both players for us, I understand the concern

But Lawson played at Auburn with his hand in the ground
Hes been facing some tough OTs in the SEC

    • D's avatar D says:

His film isn’t great when you watch all the plays. Go back and watch a game films and watch the plays away from his side. Size also isn’t everything, DE have to muscle through blocks because they are directly over the OT, and many time inside the TE on run plays and he does not have good core strength or he doesn’t use it well one or the other. I loved the idea of Lawson last year, and early on this year but things I saw watching his tape/games, made me lose interest. Like Tak he would be a solid 2nd but I wouldn’t use a first on Lawson

The Dontari Poe visit with the Dolphins has begun.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

M13 — what are your thoughts on him. Love the idea of him, but am also wondering why the Chiefs were so willing to let him go in his prime. Also wondering why the reports are that he is willing to do a one-year show me contract.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m not sure why his production has slipped over the last 2 years, but playing him next to Suh could rejuvenate his career: he has been named to 2 Pro-Bowls. Still young at 27 when the season begins, BIG boy who can eat space at 6’3″, 346, and he’s surprisingly fast.

He’d be a good signing if the price is right. I’m sensing something should we sign him…

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And I’m not sure what it is that I’m sensing. Major $$$ trimmings in ’18, a shift to a 3-4 in ’18, overspending by Tannenbaum once again, or possibly trying to send a message to Jordan Phillips. My gut is churning once again…

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

You answered the questions real well with “production slipped.” He obviously thinks he is worth more than he can get right now in the future and can do better. Still leaves the thought that he knew he could do better though. Don’t think they will revamp the D this year and then do it again in 2018 next year…..not Gase’s style.

  47. D's avatar D says:

I like the idea of Poe, for the right price. If he is really expensive, even on a show me contract, I’d rather just draft big Stevie than invest a lot in Poe. Zach Brown would be my primary target right now. I think if we had Brown we might even have enough talent in the team to warrant a trade up for Charlton or Barnett.

  48. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    D

Fair enough. I know you love those SEC prospects so I’m sure you’ve seen him more than me. But I have a more positive impression of Lawson but when it is said and done I also think he is a 2nd rounder.

I’m just saying he isn’t a “tweener” in my book

  49. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

The thing about Poe is what does he want in terms of $$$

Seems to me he is turning down a lot of teams that are willing to entertain him. He might be being unrealistic about his options.

Personally I am a fan of Jordan Phillips and when it comes down to DT I just want a rotational guy to add

But if you add Poe on a 1 or 2 year deal…why not?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Yep — pretty clear he is not hearing what he wants to hear. Might work well for us if he goes short-term with an eye to the future. As M13 pointed out, what better place to look good for the next contract than next to Suh?

  50. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Carl Lawson is certainly no “tweener”, to be sure, but his injury history is troublesome; I wouldn’t touch him as much as I like him and his potential.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

His injury concerns are what push him down IMO
But it’s just a lower draft grade

Those concerns aren’t big enough for me to remove him from my board

I just don’t feel so comfortable with him at 22
If we drafted him there though I would not shed a tear – I think he’s a solid player
You can only take so many of those risks

If we drafted Lawson and Jarrad Davis in the first couple of rounds I might be a little worried…

    • D's avatar D says:

His injury concerns are a big concern for me. He is fully recovered, as evidenced by his tape, though I will say I’d be more concerned due to nature of his injuries than say Anzalone. Many and it will be more so every year from this point forward, good candidates will have and injury history. They play hard in a competitive league these things will happen. You have to think about the nature of the injury not necessarily how many games missed etc.

  51. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  52. D's avatar D says:

M13 Lawson is certainly a tweeter, but not fully in a bad way. He has flexibility but a true 4-3 DE he is not. He will need NFL weight training and some tightening up of his power moves/technique. He right now is more a stand up OLB best fit for 3-4 but has the ability to become a hand in the ground DE. However if we want a start right off 4-3 guy, and we are using a first for that reason. Lawson isn’t my guy. Again, second round, with ideas of taking over in a year or two, fine I can see that, he has tons of upside, but neither he or Tak are not first rounders for us IMO.

It was cold and my calf muscle was tight and I stepped down a step and to avoid my cat I had to take a bigger than anticipated step and heard a pop and felt like someone had slapped me hard on the back of my leg. I knew it instantly. Pretty random injury. Immediately had no strength in it. It kinda feels like a constant leg cramp plus soreness you usually have after a massive leg cramp, happening at the same time every time I put weight on it.

That sucks D, says the guy who not too long ago was not so long ago laid up for a couple weeks after hurting his back putting a bottle of water into the dispenser. We both have to stop over training for peak performance and get off the roids…… 🙂

  54. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’ll say this… if we’re SERIOUS about signing Poe — as opposed to just trying to drive his price up — we know what we’re looking for in a DT: a BIG space-eater to free-up Suh from double teams. Poe would be the one who needs to be doubled.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

They certainly couldn’t double them both. I’m concerned that we would sign him to a one year deal though, which wouldn’t make much sense to me.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

1-year deal = PROVE IT. And if he rocks, he either re-signs with us for $$$ in ’18, or he increases his market value to other teams by rocking next to Suh. It’s a win-win for Poe if he’s looking out for his future.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

So if Poe walks out of Davie, I’d get David Canter on the phone for the services of Big Paul on the cheap. Save that cap space, don’t burn it. Roll it over so that we can re-sign Jarvis next year.

  55. D's avatar D says:

Piggy I’m worried more about Davis and at this point I would take Anzalone over Davis. I think Anzalone has become my favorite lb for us overall just for value vs round we could get him in. I’d be plenty OK with Foster or Cunningham in the first, but outside of those being BPA over the DEs that are left, I’d rather have Anzalone in the second. Anzalone is probably on the cusp of a first round grade, so I’d only hope we could still get him there

cap space is tight. how do they sign Poe w/o letting someone go or Tannehill restructure?

    • when you look at that you’d have to say any kind of deal for Landry isn’t coming until the end of the season.
they’ll probably be booking a deal for Kiko soon which means they’re going to need to create more space. so, either Tannehill takes one for the team or Jordan, Misi or both are gone. they still need to have cap available in case

  65. D's avatar D says:

Sad part about this is it’s going to pretty significantly set back my return to my weight training program. I feel like Mike, or at least as old as him. Shit shouldn’t be breaking down like this unless I’m that old….. Sheesh

  66. D's avatar D says:

Like both you and I were saying Lou, if Poe signs it’s either going to be a cap friendly deal (not likely give the demand for him) or if we see a signing it’s going to be followed by some changes, like Tanny’s contract restructured, or Misi and Jordan cut. So it’s only an outside chance we sign Poe and if we do we are for certain done. Brown would be a no go, which may already be true because either he is shooting for WAY more than he is worth or there is something really wrong there. He has too much in ways of justifying aggressive interest for there to be so little right now. Something doesn’t seem right

  70. D's avatar D says:

I think Bushrod might bet better at LG than he was at RG.

  71. D's avatar D says:

I think we get a deal worked out with Kiko probably during the season and Landry this offseason, if need be if we fail with one of them we just use the FT on them

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Both could be done before camp opens or after, but my guess is not till after the draft. Have hit on the cap too hard at this point.

  72. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Unless someone like Howard drops, pretty sure our only first pick on O would be to get a guard. And while you guys know the players in the draft far better, seems we don’t have to take a G to actually get a G. A C or a T could be moved to G as always. James or Pouncey could become a G (and both are suited to it). So might be BPA v need in the first is only limited to BPA on the OL.

    • D's avatar D says:

Just the nature of OL and only dressing 7 and carrying 9 means ya gotta have those guys who can fill in at different spots. Not all OL can do that. It’s a lot more difficult vthan it seems on paper especially when you may have spent 10+ years all at the same position.

  73. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I know many of you won’t be excited about this but I bet Steen and Urbik are in play at one of the guard spots as well. Maybe we do re-sign Bushrod, draft a guard at some point and sign some UDFAs. Then let Larsen and all of them compete.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

You could be right, but am still betting by the time all is said and done, there is one starting G position set in a big, bold letters, even if it is some rook drafted high and some vets are told they are competing.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I’d think Larsen is probably the preferred player at RG. Better move player than the other OGs on the team and is familiar w/ a variant of Gase’s offense.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

As far as I’m concerned, Bushrod is a priority to re-sign. No, he’s not sexy, but he’s solid… even if only utilized as a backup (somebody WILL go down this year), and he played in all 16 games last year, helping to pave the way for Ajayi to break out. He’ll be cheap, will help to shore up our O-Line, and is a locker room leader. WINNING!

  74. I think we’re going to see Steen as a solid plan at backup guard and Jesse Davis will compete against Young for backup T and you’re going to see MF’s boy Brendel compete at backup at the C position.

So, we’ve got some competition there at depth and Urbik and Young being what they are could be playing somewhere else. If you check out both Davis and Brendel you can see they are definitely viable candidates to stick with the team as depth.

“While the rest of the NFL is paying through the nose for guards, the Dolphins have decided to go in the other direction because their schedule suggests that’s the right thing to do. The Dolphins, you see, will have eight games against teams that run a 3-4 as their base defense.

And against that base 3-4 the guards are asked to do much less than they ordinarily need to do otherwise. Indeed, on some pass plays against the 3-4, one guard is assigned to block … nobody. That guard can help double team someone.”
    ***
This is idiotic. What teams makes personnel decisions based on one year’s schedule? If so, that’s ridiculous. What if every team we play the next year plays a 4-3, do we have to get all new personnel? Plus, most teams…us included…play multiple fronts game to game. Lol

  79. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Latest McShay #22 pick for us….Haason Reddick, LB, Temple. Still not sure is he is a strong side backer and have no doubt TImmons will be middle and Kiko weak…..but that sure would give us three LBs who can bring the heat on a QB.
    —————-
Reddick has absolutely crushed the pre-draft process. He had a great week at the Senior Bowl, showing that he has the speed, change-of-direction skills and instincts to play an off-the-ball linebacker role in the pros. And then he posted elite numbers at the combine (4.52 40 and 11-foot-1 broad jump). It would now be an upset if he fell out of Round 1.

  86. Only $5.525M in guaranteed money remains on Tannehill’s contract after this season with a dead cap of $4.6M but huge cap hits for ’18, ’19 and ’20. I can easily see him restructuring his contract.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I gotta figure unless Jordan and Misi are in the plans, something will happen with their contracts. So forget about Misi for a moment, if Jordan is expected to be in the plans then we already have another edge guy in the fold. Otherwise there is no reason for him to still be here, his dead cap is 0 if we release him and we’d have another $3.2+M in cap space.

How annoying of an enigma is Jordan? SMH

      • with Tannehill’s dead money being what it is beyond ’17 there’s no way they’re paying him $20M/yr beyond this season. he’s either restructuring or he’s playing somewhere else after this season.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

A lot depends on what kind of season Tannehill has in 2017. Does he ascend even more, no re-occuring issues with his knee, team success etc. He’s the 14th highest paid QB which is right in the middle for the most part.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

ProfLou — Tanny is cutable after this year, but you thinking no way does he stick at his contract amount? He’s getting paid about the same this year. Not like much has changed since he signed, and seems he and Gase get along well.

  87. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Barry Jackson makes good points. Might be a bit of cherry-picking involved as to which players and that some of the 2017 players have low-cap first year sign numbers, but can’t argue now with how it worked out.
    ———————————

“Consider this: If the Dolphins had given Vernon and Miller and Derrick Shelby and Rishard Matthews exactly what their new teams gave them (Giants, Texans, Falcons and Titans, in order) and structured the contracts in an identical way, they would have a combined cap charge of $33 million this upcoming season.

Now look at the 2017 cap charges of the players the Dolphins have re-signed, signed or acquired this offseason: Julius Thomas ($7.1 million), Andre Branch ($5 million), William Hayes ($4.75 million), Kenny Stills ($3.7 million), Anthony Fasano ($2.75 million), Lawrence Timmons ($3.775 million) and Nate Allen ($3.4 million) and Ted Larsen ($1.4 million).

Those eight contracts add up to a cap hit of $31.9 million – less than the $33 million for the four aforementioned players.”

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

In hindsight we made the right choices. None of those players are elite but a couple of them are being paid that way.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

you’re exactly correct. Tannehill is a cap casualty next season. No way they pay him $20m/yr the next 3 season with next to nothing in dead money. So, he restructures or he’s gone. Guaranteed.

    • D's avatar D says:

I think it’s likely they approach him as for a restructured contract, and they probably make it worth it to him by making it more guaranteed money than it will be if he doesn’t. Know Tanny is mostly unprotected in his contract next year, but was thinking that we might keep him around for 2018…..even if maybe for the money he has on paper right now if he has a good year. I can absolutely see a restructure this year, but was thinking that would be to guarantee him 2018 in return for freeing up cap room.

  90. D's avatar D says:

Tim I never see positions as given, I see tt you have incumbents and I think they go into PS as the projected starter, but then the pads are put on and with any coach worth their pay, it becomes an earn it scenario. If you aren’t in that situation then you either shit for competition and you need to get some, or your coach doesn’t care about keeping his job. I could easily see Steen as the starter over Bushrod or Larsen, and it may mean we have no clear cut stud at the position if we wind up that way, but it also means our depth is quality as well so it’s got it’s good with the bad. Hell it could be a draft pick, who cares just give me the best guy and hopefully that guy gets the job done
