D-fense!

Well, the Dolphins brass have made it clear, they wanted to improve the defense, and so far in the 2017 NFL Draft, the first 3 picks have gone to that side of the ball.  In the 1st RD pick #22, The Dolphins took Mizzou DE Charles Harris (6’3″ 253)

r192559_576x324_16-9

In the 2nd RD, at pick #54, the Dolphins selected Ohio St. LB Raekwon McMillan (6’2″ 240).  If I’m going to be honest, I didn’t really look closely at McMillan, there were other guys I was more interested in.  McMillan could probably play any of the 3 LB spots, but maybe he’s our future MLB.

Raekwon-McMillan-091314-480-wide-x-320-high

The Dolphins apparently weren’t done adding talent to the defense, because in the 3rd RD, the Dolphins took Clemson CB Cordrea Tankersley (6’1″ 199).

I hope the Dolphins will add some beef for the O-line, but that remains to be seen.  Pitt OG Dorian Johnson is still available, as is Utah OG Isaac Asiata.  In any case, Dolphins took care of business on the defensive side, and that’s a good thing

GO DOLPHINS!  ZERO IN!

Why wait for June? Browns cut Gary Barnidge. Makes sense given where they are at and that he is 31 with Njoku newly selected, but talk about stopgap.

  2. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think we targeted certain guys and they were available to us

    Harris, McMillan and Tankserly
Interest in all 3 was leaked before the draft

  3. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ken, based on grades we went BPA with a nod to need. We didn’t reach for anyone. I think our draft has been very good value at key defensive positions.

Harris – big time pass rush prospect
McMillan – lead one of the best teams in the country in tackles
Tankersley – a playing making corner for the best team in the country

  4. D's avatar D says:

Tim no one is saying they shouldn’t I just was saying wise Jr was a guy we liked a lot and I had hoped we would get, that was my frustration it could easily been fucking Lions or fucking bucs, I have said those several times the past 3days

  5. D's avatar D says:

Mikey, Barnige would be different as we wouldn’t have lead our TE group nor being a top passing target as our expectation of him. He’d basically be what Sims was, but if rather just draft Sprinkle if that’s the case

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That’s what I’m thinking D, just draft one

      • D's avatar D says:

I like it because you might get a gem, it’s kinda a gamble but I like it better than getting a guy who you go well he won’t ever be anything special but he’s going to do his job. You need those guys, but we also already have one in Fasano and Gray, we need a guy we are gambling on being better than that

  6. D's avatar D says:

Wise was my stout big bodied DE to pair with a speed rusher. That’s kinda another reason I’m a bit down missing out on him.

  7. D's avatar D says:

    Butt off the board

  8. D's avatar D says:

If Brantley goes undrafted and it looks like he may. I’d be all over that investigation and as soon as I thought he might be cleared I’m making him an UDFA offer

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Isn’t it known he knocked a woman out and her tooth?

      • D's avatar D says:

Still being investigated I think. Like I was saying I’d follow the investigation and do my work, but he would be a good player and maybe even as a DE. I don’t want him if he is guilty, but I will say the dude has been squeeky clean his entire career there, so I just don’t know how I feel about this and where or not it’s one of those right before the draft things like happened with Tunsil and Lael

    What kind of bullshit

  12. D's avatar D says:

Kittle and leggett gone, I’d take Sprinkle with our first 5th if he is still there. TE is getting light. Asiata isn’t going to last much longer either

  16. D's avatar D says:

With Kaaya still there I’m not going to be shocked if he is one of our 5s, I could see it being TE OG QB and WR. I’d prefer a S in that 5th round but S is already pretty damn light now

  17. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

D, smoking weed and not killing your ex-girlfriend is not the same as knocking a woman out if he did. It doesn’t seem to be the same to me.

    • D's avatar D says:

Tim, the situation not the crime. I’d call murder the worst of the accusations, I’m saying the use of allegation to corrupt their draft status. I’m saying I don’t know if it wasn’t a spiteful accusation or if it’s real. I haven’t looked into it much so I just don’t know

    • D's avatar D says:

Tim not murdering your GF or not hitting a girl… Which then?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Collins had nothing to do with it so he was clean but got screwed. It sounds like Brantley did what he’s accused of. Perception is not always reality and that sucks.

  24. D's avatar D says:

Asiata is who I want to be our next pick

  25. D's avatar D says:

LEDbetter is an interesting idea as a DE for us, like a lesser more power based Wise Jr, not as explosive but he can play DE or DT.

  26. D's avatar D says:

Elumenor is a good pick for Ravens. He is a big powerful guy

  27. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Well there goes an OG

  28. D's avatar D says:

Asiata is the nastiest OG I saw when I was looking at guys and his feet are very quick. I think he would challenge for LG which I think is going to be Steen unless we get a guy who can challenge him. I think Larsen and Bushrod battle it out for RG

  29. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Oh…there goes walker

  30. D's avatar D says:

Fucking Detroit better not do that shit to us again. Already did it with Davis and Tabor. Both visit guys

  31. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    There goes Walker

  32. D's avatar D says:

I didn’t really like Walker to be honest. He was pretty great last year but not nearly as good this year. They blamed it on putting on too much weight to be seen as a potential 3-4 ILB, but he really just didn’t look like the same player.

  33. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

How many LBs do we need? Maybe 6-7 suit up on game day, 3 start, 2 play most nickel downs, the rest play STs and that’s it.

    • D's avatar D says:

I think we got out starters I think though I’d like to get a little better quality at depth but I think we can get someone to challenge the depth players from UDFA

      • D's avatar D says:

        See above

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think part of the problem is Hewitt is in the mix at 24 years old entering his 3rd season but for some reason he gets no love. I understand people’s concern with Misi’s durability but Hewitt gets the stink eye and he’s better than that. No prospect at this point is projected to be an impact player. We’re in Sleeperville now. 😉

  55. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Larsen was signed in case Pouncey is done, and also to compete at guard. Bushrod signed for another year after playing 17 games at RG last year. Now we add a tough guard in Asiata to compete with them, Steen and Urbik. The OL is not in dire straits.

I know I’m a homer but this draft is pretty damn good. They can all develop behind vets and maybe one or two jumps up and says you can’t not play me. 🙂

I’m still thinking it’s safe to do it as UDFA and only if you research shows something that hasn’t been released and makes it at least less serious about the situation like he didn’t hit her he pushed her off him and she fell an knocked her tooth out.

  62. D's avatar D says:

  65. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Tim I know Larsen was the FA insurance for Pouncey, but he’s temporary, as is Pouncey, whose days are short I feel.
Asiata has flexibility besides OG….he could become a dominant OC in a couple years.

BTW, them Utah boys are old….lol. Asiata will be 25 by the playoffs of his rookie season..

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Didn’t Larsen sign a 3 year deal? We don’t have to worry about the future in just 2017. We will have FA and a draft next year too. 😉

  66. Ken's avatar Ken says:

This is a draft where we have definitely gone after needs. We are clearly filling holes on the roster. I don’t think anyone has been a reach. We can all if each of these guys was the best one out there but overall I think this looks like a good draft. Now of course we have to see how these guys turn out

    • D's avatar D says:

I think it’s seems that way because we had pseudo needs at a lot of positions, yet not true needs at really any. We just got players we liked at whatever position they played

    Harvey-Clemons, Josh S 6’4″ 217 Louisville

  73. D's avatar D says:

GD, Larsen might be temporary but it also buys time for us to draft an OC that’s a stud. You really want your IC to be a smart football player. They are done a dozen and you just can’t plug any OG there and expect success. It’s probably the hardest position on the OL since it includes knowing what all the other positions are doing, even though your most physically gifter player on the OL is the LT usually

  74. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Stanger, Asiata initially is more a phone booth guy, but this Fla heat & humidity will condition his big azz.

    • D's avatar D says:

No he isn’t. Not even close. Watch some more of his tape GD he has really good feet and they pulled him all the time

  75. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think the trade up was a flip with Philly to take Asiata

And then a flip down from 5th round last pick with Philly to the 10th pick in the 6th round

  76. D's avatar D says:

Our pick is live, I bet it’s Kaaya

  77. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Ok D, Asiata will never be a OC since he can’t even spell his own name.

  78. jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

he’s our next Hall of Fame guard. Let’s not get over confident with this 5th round player. The two players we released mid season were drafted higher than this kid. It’s a crap shot with 5th rounders in addition I doubt if he starts at the LG spot he will be better than The rookie we had there last yr.

  79. D's avatar D says:

GD don’t just try twisting words saying something I didn’t because I disagree. I gave my reasons why, just give me yours for why not. Keep it above the belt bro

  80. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

D, you’re taking me out of context, I never said he couldn’t or didn’t pull or sweep. I said initially he’s more a phone booth power guy, but yes he has good feet…..he’ll need some work though to be a great ZBS in the much tougher NFL, but I think he’ll get there as I also mentioned.

  88. D's avatar D says:

GD you said he us more a phone booth guy, and he isn’t. Utah ran a ZBS they ran shifts and lots of movement on the line. It’s not that he can be something else, it’s that he isn’t at all a phone booth guu

    • D's avatar D says:

His ceiling is higher than most available there. He does need to really put in some work though. I have heard from some LSU fans he isn’t really a gym rat. But he dies play with a high motor. Just needs to help himself on the field by helping himself outside it
