Are the Dolphins OK at RB?

2017-06-03_134338

A healthy Jay Ajayi/Kenyan Drake combo could be a great combo, but unfortunately, there are now concussion concerns with our star RB.  What happens if Jay Ajayi is out for a prolonged period of time?  Do the Dolphins have enough talent in their backfield w/o Ajayi to make a playoff run?  Let’s take a look . . .

At Alabama, Kenyan Drake was never “the man”, and was always 2nd fiddle to big back Derrick Henry.  Drake had the talent, and was thought to be the guy, but nagging injuries always stole the opportunity for him.  In his Sophomore year in 2013, Drake had a nice season, carrying (his high) 92 carries for 694 yards, an impressive 7.5 YPC, along with 8 rushing TD’s.  Drake also caught 12 passes for 135 yards and 1 TD.  In his entire college career, spanning 4 seasons, Drake had a total of 1495 yards rushing.  That’s good and bad.  Bad, because he was never asked to carry the load, and good, because he should have a lot more miles left on what should be fresh legs.

Last season as a Miami Dolphins RB, Drake was used sparingly, carrying the ball only 33 times for 179 yards with 2 rushing TD’s.  Drake also caught 9 passes for 46 yards.  In comparison, Ajayi had 260 carries, so Drake was just in to spell Ajayi, no more than that.  The Dolphins also have Damien Williams, who was used in a few different capacities, as a FB, and also as a solid receiver out of the backfield.  Williams actually had 2 more carries than Drake, 35 for 115 yards and 3 rushing TD’s.  Williams added 23 receptions for 249 yards and 3 TD’s.  We also have Storm Johnson, who is on his 3rd team in 3 years, taking the full FLA tour, playing for the Jaguars, Bucs, and now Dolphins.  Also on the roster is Senorise Perry and De’veon Smith.  De’Veon is probably the only other back here with a fair amount of carries, although in college, at Michigan. De”veon Smith finished his career at Michigan with 495 carries and 2235 yards, 22 TD’s, and a 4.5 YPC.

There was a report that the Dolphins may be interested in well traveled RB DeAngelo Williams, who was a long time Carolina Panthers, and then Pittsburgh Steelers RB. Williams, now 34, can’t be expected to carry the load Ajayi did last year, or more importantly, was expected to carry this year.   Williams had less than 100 carries last year, and shouldn’t be expected for much more than that.  The Dolphins really need Ajayi, and then we need to pray that he doesn’t have any concussion issues.  You can always find a running back to help out, but it’s not likely to find one that can give you what Ajayi gave us last year, or was hoped to give us this year.

Do you think we’ll be OK?

Go Dolphins!  Zero in!

…Tanny situation has me really concerned. Fans can complain about their QB UNTIL they realize that the “next up” is NOT how we want to start the season. “Let the Kool aide last a little longer, please!”

#Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill has those in Miami holding their breaths. They do not know his fate, yet. So we wait.

  3. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Hey Rhino – No question man, we need Tannehill healthy and productive for us. As crazy it sounds, I do think Kaepernick would be a strong consideration if Tanny were to be seriously injured.

  4. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

  5. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Moore is better than Kaepernick. Kaeperdick is a gimmick system QB who had limited success supported by a strong defense.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

what’s your definition of “Limited Sucess” wasn’t he in two championship games and a superbowl not long ago??

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Can’t say I agree with that Phelon. Kaepernick has a lot more talent than Moore. He also playoff experience, and led a team to the SB. I’d feel better with Kaepernick at QB than Moore, but that’s just me. Aside from all the negative media that surrounds Kaep, he’s a pretty good QB.

  6. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

what pisses me off is that Tanny had a Ligament tear in his knee and they didn’t have it repaired tears don’t heal by themselves.

  7. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Moore IMHO is not a starting caliper QB in the NFL Even though i dislike Kaepernick (He throws like my sister) i think he would be way better than Moore

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If it is serious, I think we’re pretty lucky to have to a QB like Kaepernick available. I hate the media circus that he would bring, but he’s a better QB than Moore. In this case, Moore is less.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

That ain’t cool.. Even if Tanny goes on IR, lots of other options. Was hoping for a step up from him to special, but like have said he hasn’t been that before.

  29. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Thanks for the vid Boulder….but sorry — you just don’t drop like that non-contact without serious pain. Best case scenario is that he re-sprained his knee (which really means more tears to the what was already there). Would be different if it was the other knee or the report came out right away about say a sprained ankle.

  30. jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

Great college draft class coming up for QB’s and they will be given 5 yr rookie contracts and we can spend our money in many other problem area’s. We may be able to get a great coach also with top draft pick AND reasonable cap space. We know Ross will go after flavor of the Year HC.

  31. jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

you should be objective facing situations like this. I hope he is OK but the news is reporting serious issues that he may have possible career ending injury. Facts are facts. Tanny is average at best and this experiment has run its course.

  32. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

LOL @ Toba – Figured that. Ravens thought long and hard about signing Kaep when Flacco was having back issues, but chose not to. We’ll see what happens. Despite what others may think, I’m glad Kaep is available if we need him.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

This from Mando, according to him the big Q is PCL (likely ready for the season) or ACL (probably out for the year)

“The Dolphins know that Tannehill hyperextended his left knee — the same one that last December suffered a partially torn ACL That is the minimum of what the player is dealing with now. A source close to Tannehill said there is the possibility of poster cruciate ligament damage.”

  37. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I realize that there are a lot of Phin fans who don’t have faith in Matt Moore… they seem to only remember the Sparano/Daboll version of Moore, who wasn’t that bad at all (the TEAM sucked). Remember he got Brandon Marshall into the Pro-Bowl in ’11… then BM through Moore under the bus AT the Pro-Bowl, SMH.

Moore has grown along with Tannehill over the last 5 years (from Philbin to Gase), and Gase had very good reason to bring Moore back. And let’s not forget: Moore posted a 105.6 passer rating last season in 3 games relieving Tannehill… seems Moore has the Gase playbook down pat. Moore would also be the clear-cut starter on several teams around the league.

I just wanted to throw that out there before everybody jumps off a cliff if we receive bad news later today. All is not lost, even in a worst case scenario. Nevertheless… my fingers remained crossed for Tannehill, the better QB of the two.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Matt Moore led 2 game-winning drives last year in only 3 games. League leader was Matthew Stafford with 8. Moore was trending towards 11 on the year had he played all 16 games.

Moore did what he did with our playoff hopes on the line… the man can handle pressure.

Why are we trying to replace Tannehill so suddenly?

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Started with “if it comes to it.” Hoping not, but if Tanny is out for the year how can we not bring another QB in? Explained how my big worry is that the injury happened non-contact.

  67. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Moore is a solid QB. He is not as athletic as Tannehill especially in terms of arm strength. That said he knows the offense and can run it well. If we bring in anyone else it is strictly to back up Moore

  68. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Asiata better learn fast, because the job is there for the taking

  69. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ken you must get a kick out of Game of Thrones, where the King or Queen’s advisor is called the King’s Hand or Queen’s Hand

  70. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    M

Did you see that New Orleans released Orlando Franklin already?

  71. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Making a decision on Kaepernick for Miami should have nothing to do with him kneeling for the anthem as we had players on Miami do the same thing last year.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He takes it further than that.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

O-Rob…..opening day last year four guys took a knee for the anthem. Was Foster, Stills, Thomas and Jenkins (but least the last two put their hands on their hearts while doing). What might not have been seen on TV was one Dolphin made a point of joining the crew making the flag wave on the field. That was Jarvis Landry. Yeah….think he gets re-signed.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Pig socks, I had to go to Africa to find freedom, I’m oppressed. Fuck Kaepernick. He is a weak minded, socialist, piece of shit and would be a locker room cancer.

  72. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

So how are we looking on the O-Line now, y’all, after Larsen’s biceps injury? THAT, alone, is going to kill ‘gel-time’ for our new front-5 being Larsen was projected to be not only our starting LG, but the “break-glass-in-case-of-emergency” in the event of Pouncey not being ready or getting injured.

THIS has been my greatest concern all along… and it’s kind of ‘back-page news’ after Ajayi’s concussion and Tannehill’s injury today.

“One key injury to our O-Line…”. Who said that (hmmm… muh? LOL)? And if anyone believes for a second that Pouncey will have a miracle and start all 16 games this year, I’d personally refer one to detox.

JMO, but we DROPPED THE BALL each of the last 2 Drafts in not taking an O-Lineman earlier than we had. The Carroo trade-up of last year STILL has me SMH, DAMMIT.

I don’t think kap would be signed to the fins with his remarks concerning the castro thing.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

And that is a real good point I hadn’t thought of. Right now Kaep might be thinking about a bridge burned.

  74. drg's avatar drg says:

    Well that sucks

  75. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, you can’t blame the team because of injuries. Every teams suffers them.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

We’re very thin at key positions on the O-Line. Larsen was to be an answer, or key cog. His injury now puts us in disarray.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I wouldn’t say disarray and no team can build their roster based on what if. We had other positions to address as well. You can’t be stocked at every position and even if you did more no guarantee they’re the answer. Injuries suck!

  76. drg's avatar drg says:

I’ve been dealing with bad knees for years now. It sucks. My left knee flared up about four months ago and I had to wear a brace for golf, basketball, etc. Couldn’t actually run or do much anything, but I was going crazy and tried to play on it anyway. With or without the brace my knee would hyperextend all the time. It was very painful and scary every time it happened. My OPS said it was because the muscles and supporting structures were still inflammed and weak so the knee wasn’t as stable as it needed to be.

I stopped using the brace because my right knee was flaring up from the extra work and amazingly my left knee healed up within a week. Some of it was coincidence, but I really felt like the brace slowed the healing process up. I think it’s hard to build strength back as long as you wear it.

No idea what will happen with Tanny, but I’d wager this isn’t the last time he’ll hyperextend it while playing. Hopefully, it continues to heal and this isn’t an issue next season.

  77. drg's avatar drg says:

    Mike,
I wouldn’t expect Asiata to play like a pro bowler this season, but I think he will be solid if they decide to start him. He really excels at pulling and running power schemes so hopefully they take advantage of that. He will struggle in pass protection at times, but I don’t think it will be much worse than what we are used to from the LG spot.

  78. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Honestly, I don’t really care much about the things Kaepernick has said, I don’t think he’s a very intelligent person. If he can help our teams win football games, that’s where my interests starts and ends. His political views don’t mean squat to me. He’s not a bad person, hasn’t beat up his wife, abused anyone. There are plenty of those in the NFL. He’s said and questionable things, but he’s not a terrible person.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      Pro Castro in Miami?

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Those things have a way of getting swept away when the player actually gets here and helps the team.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        It would be awkward

There are very few places where it wouldn’t be a circus

I think from a football point of view it makes sense, but I really don’t want to spend the season arguing about Kaep

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Right now, nothing is getting done, but it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if it were found that Tannehill would miss significant time that the Dolphins would be in touch with Kaep’s agent.

    • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

Not too many people like Castro in South Florida. Remember this town has a large population of cubans who had their land and business’ taken away by Fidel’s regime. He would probably have security detail protecting him.

  79. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Piggy

What’s the difference who we argue over? If not Kaep, it will be Tanny or Moore, right?

  80. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

ESPN just reported that Miami is very worried about the knee and more than likely will bring in another qb, oswieler-cutler or kaep

  81. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Houston gave a 2nd rnder to cleve for taking oswieler of their books, if they trade him to miami you can expect they will get another pick. the word is cleve likes oswieler and gase has history with him

    What’s your problem with socks?
    ————-_———————-_——-
    It’s not socks that I have a problem with…..

  83. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I would just as soon go with Moore. He has earned the opportunity. Kaepernick would destroy the team first mentality that Gase has brought. iF they were going to bring in another QB, make it Cutler. But if they bring in someone to be starter they may as well cut Moore, because they are saying he isn’t good enough.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Forget Kaepernick, you think Moore deserves to be the unquestioned starter without competition other than Brandon Doughty?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Moore is next man up. Any other QB would be the backup.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That’s a very unfinished statement. Any other backup would be his backup, but bring in a starting caliber QB, and I think saying that is silly, especially long term. Moore has a leg up, and knows the offense, but a starting caliber QB would be given a chance to show what he can do, especially if the Dolphins struggle early.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Moore gets first shot at it is all I’m saying. I’m not a fan of Kaepernick and he started out behind Gabbert last year. I understand Cutler knows the system but he may have moved on. So who else is an available starting QB?

  84. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You know we get all amped up for the team each year and friggin injuries can really take the wind out of the sails of potential. I’m really tired of it. 😦

  85. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Tim

I think you have to do whatever you can to be the best team you can be, especially at the QB position. If there’s a player available that might be better than you’re backup, you have to explore that, especially when the whole season has yet to be played.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Look at the Vikings last year. They had Case Keenum, a QB similar to Matt Moore’s ability, and the Vikes made a bold trade because they felt like they were a playoff team, and didn’t want to squander it away. I feel the same way about our team.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Not only that, but if Moore is the starter, and he goes down, the season hangs on Brandon Doughty? Can’t see that. Have to try and get something done. It doesn’t have to be Kaepernick, maybe a trade.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Then there is that intangible of right fit that teams talk about all the time. The locker room is important.

  86. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Mike E. – I think if Doughty was out playing Moore, he would already be the number two QB. And I would be fine with that. This coaching staff has shown they are willing to play the best player at any position. It is a meritocracy.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Right, but Doughty isn’t going to outplay Moore, but I’d sure as hell be looking to find someone who can!

      • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

At the cost of your team chemistry and philosophy? And I don’t think Kaepernick is better than Moore.

  87. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

I am more concerned with the OL, STILL.

  88. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, none of what we discuss here will decide what the team does anyway so we’re about to go around in circles like we all often do. LOL

We’ll see what the diagnosis on Tannehill is and the next course of action the team takes.

  89. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Phelon

I’m not limiting my scope to Kaepernick. I’d explore any and every avenue that can lead us to an upgrade at QB, whether it’s a trade, or a free agent. Let’s say we traded for Alex Smith? That may not even be a possibility, unless KC really loves Mahomes. This team is a playoff team, but I’m not sure we are with Matt Moore at QB.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Moore would be a starter on probably half the teams in the NFL.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t think so. I’d have to go look at every team, but if there were more than 10, I’d be surprised.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Moore is a backup but he can play especially with good talent around him. I do think there are 6 or so teams he can start for right now and 2 of them are in our division

WHAT??? Case Keenum was playing for the Rams last year, not the Vikings. Perhaps you’re thinking of Sam Bradford, the former R1P1 QB in the 2010 Draft, after Teddy Bridgewater went down?

  91. Ken's avatar Ken says:

No need to panic Moore is capable. Just get some depth until Tannehill is healthy again. I don’t see anyone like a Sam Bradford type being available this year and Moore is much better than Case Keenum

  92. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

I would not trade for anyone at this point. That’s for sure.

Agree Keenum would be a good backup to Moore
    ———
THAT’S what I’m talking about. Disregard my 9:10 PM comment to you above. We want a relatively cheap, yet decent QB to backup Moore… IF it even comes down to it.

We’ve got a new problem on the O-Line with Larsen getting injured, and we also would like to roll over as much money as possible to re-sign Jarvis Landry next year!!!

We MUST have “3-D” vision to win not just this year, but for next year and beyond.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Agree with not wanting to waste money especially on a second tier QB. Not so worried about OL. I am high on Asiata but we need depth

  94. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

As for the OL, we still have Urbik who is currently the starting center until Pouncey is ready (fingers crossed), Steen and Asiata to be LG options. Larsen was a nice versatile player but not the key to our OL – Pouncey, Tunsil, James…

  95. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

oh, by the way, nice article Mike E. I enjoyed reading it.

  96. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I think that is quite an exaggeration Phelon. Moore is a good backup. But I think there may be 5-6 teams he would start on. If there were more….well, he would be making big bucks (QB Bucks) as a starter.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Exactly but at the same time I am confident he can play well for us

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Teams keep drafting young QBs and a lot of them aren’t any good. Moore knows at this stage in his career and it’s been like this his entire career, teams will always try to replace him, not commit to him. He likes it in Miami and it’s a unique and cool situation for us.

  97. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Ken, you can’t assume Keep is cheap, because he doesn’t have any offers. I heard he’s still looking for starter money.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

      Kaep

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

And my college dropout friend is still holding out for a management position. Kaep is going to have accept that he is not getting starting money until he shows that he can earn it.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Maybe that’s another reason he’s unemployed as some try to make it about race which is ridiculous.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You dont know that. Some guys don’t want to put their body through the rigger of the NFL for peanuts.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m saying what teams would be willing to pay him, not what he wants. He has a right not to play for peanuts. I’ve made that point many times about other players. But he needs a team first. The NFL will survive without him.

  98. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Turning for the evening. Peace
