Dolphins bolster QB position

dolphins-football-21678-jpg.

With Ryan Tannehill very likely out for the season, the Miami Dolphins acted quickly to make sure they were competitive in 2017.  Some of the names on the list of candidates were of horror movie stuff.  Kyle Orton?  Tim Tebow?  I’m not going to hide my preference, we all know I favored Kaepernick, based only on a pure talent standpoint, and IMO, his potential in Adam Gase’s offense.  I do however, completely understand, and endorse the choice of Jay Cutler.  Gase and Cutler have a synergy.  They can sound off to each other, listen to each other, take criticism from one another, and do it in a manner where both still like and respect one another.  That, in and of itself is worth a lot.

As it has been well documented and discussed over and over, Jay Cutler had his best season with Adam Gase, and there’s reason to believe with the talent we have in our offense here in Miami, that Cutler could easily surpass the numbers he put up in Chicago in 2015.  Jarvis Landry, Devante Parker, Kenny Stills, Jay Ajayi, Julius Thomas, Leonte Carroo, Kenyan Drake, Cutler has plenty of nice weapons to exceed what he did in 2015.

clipboard

I guess the big question is, does Jay Cutler start?  I think that’s the plan, unless there are any setbacks for Jay Cutler.  I like Matt Moore, and he’s definitely a capable QB.  On the other hand, he’s a BACKUP QB, not a starter.  He’s excellent at spending time on the sidelines, and then answering the call to come in and get the job done.  Could Jay Cutler do that if he spent weeks on the sidelines, and Moore was injured, and be expected to step in and get the job done immediately?  I’m not so sure about that.  It takes a certain mindset to work that way, much like a relief pitcher in baseball.  Good relievers are worth their weight in gold in MLB, and good backup QB’s are much the same.  Moore has shown, and possibly even preferred to be the backup.  He had opportunities to go elsewhere to compete for a starting job, but there was a certain comfort staying here in Miami as the backup.  No shame in that, he’s one of the best backup QB’s in the NFL, whereas as a starter, he would be towards the bottom of the pack.

tannehill

So what of Ryan Tannehill?  I think it’s clear as day that whether Ryan Tannehill gets the surgery now, or 6-8 weeks from now, he’s having surgery and is not really in consideration as our QB for this season.  In other words, he’s done for the season, it’s just a matter of when he has the surgery.  It’s a shame, because many of us felt this was the year Ryan would reach great heights, and realize his potential, but now it’s all on hold for 2018.  None of this is official of course, just official in MY mind.  Get the surgery, come back fully healthy with a stable knee, and kick ass in 2018.  Don’t linger too long wasting time, get it done, and make it happen next season.  Unfortunately for Ryan Tannehill, his first OUT in his contract comes up in 2018, meaning if the Dolphins terminate his contract, of the $17.5M of his contract, only $4.6M is dead money.  If you’re rooting for Ryan (Like I am), also know that number drops even further down in 2019 to a $2.3M dead cap hit, meaning if the Dolphins want to give Tannehill 1 more year to figure out if he could reach a higher level of playing, they can do that.  A great year by Jay Cutler could certainly complicate that picture, but I’ll take the complications!

this sucks and not sure how they sign landry now.
“Miami’s 2018 salary commitments are just $3 million under the projected $174 million cap and the Dolphins now have lost most of the available 2017 cap space that they hoped to carry over to next spring.”

  2. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

Good job mike. I just don’t see cutler as long time answer for phins no matter how he plays this year. Tanny will be the QB next year.

Awesome work Mike E — and glad you have come to accept the Cutler solution. Was laughing how all the Kaep love came flooding back after Tanny went down. Days before you were bad mouthing him. It was like he broke up with the tortoise he ditched you for and you thought you had a chance again. 🙂

Any of you guys watch the new Hardknocks yet? Hard not to like Jameis Winston, both on the field and off. And Desean and Mike Evans make for one scary wideout combo.

Plus at the end it was just like this board…..they showed clip after clip of coaches and players talking about Game of Thrones.

Really can’t say that yet. If Cutler has a great season, leads the Dolphins into the playoffs, maybe win a playoff game or two, or more, you can’t really think they would just forget about Cutler. I also would imagine Cutler would want to come back here too, so all that would have to play out.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I don’t see us keeping both cutler and tannehill. Also cutler will be a free agent next year. If he really has a great year he’s gonna want a lot more money and our cap situation sucks right now. We’d have to cut tanny to make room probably.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We probably won’t be able to keep both, but there would have to be discussion about Cutler. That’s all I’m saying, it’s not so cut and dry.

No controversy this year at least……but what if Cutler looks pretty good and the 9-7 Dolphins get the 6th seed and blown out in the WC game? Sorta think O will find something to talk about then.

    Gase on Grant playing outside.

“I think he just feels comfortable. He understands what he’s supposed to do. He doesn’t have to worry about all these different options you have inside. That’s why the slot is a lot harder than a lot of people realize. You’re working off the DB a lot and trying to figure out leverages and what you’re supposed to do to be on the same page as the quarterback. I think putting him out there on the outside lets him use his strength – his quickness off the ball, his vertical speed. When he makes a cut, he creates separation. If you get the ball in his hands and there’s open space, it’s a dangerous situation for the defense. I just see a guy that’s very focused. He wants to do right. He’s really been good in the meetings. He’s trying to be one of those guys that does things as perfect as he can. It’s been good so far.”

  26. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m playing around on Spotrac with their tools (fun for me!). Although we’re looking extremely bad in terms of cap space next year right now, I can get us to $25.5 under the cap with 4 moves…
    1) Cut Byron Maxwell ($0 dead money, $10M in savings)
    2) Cut Ja’Wuan James ($0 dead money, $9.3M in savings)
    3) Restructure Mike Pouncey ($5.4M in savings… and who knows, maybe we’ll just cut him after he goes down again: $2M dead money, $9M in savings)
    4) Restructure Ryan Tannehill ($12.5M in savings)

    http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/tools/roster/miami-dolphins/2018/997d221b25c0b53cd6a6b74831228004/

This is but one way to go about it, and this assumes that Tannehill makes a full recovery and we don’t re-sign Cutler (way, WAY too early to call at the moment, OBVIOUSLY). Doing this ensures we make payroll, are able to re-sign Jarvis Landry, and we’d have a little extra $$$ to spend on replacements via FA.

Strictly IMO… Maxwell and James are already marked men; they won’t be here next year regardless of the seasons they have. As such, you KNOW I’ll be heavily scouting CBs and Tackles this year in the college ranks. And I’m certainly keeping my eyes on QBs as well.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I think James could be back.it depends On the season he has. Maxwell I agree. He’ll be gone unless lippett really plays bad.

  27. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Son,

Hey, Brother. This is my best effort in landing Kirk Cousins via FA next year. Skins will need a QB next year, so I traded them Tannehill and James to get Morgan Moses (to replace James… and yes, the Skins have the available cap space to make it happen). I traded Maxwell to get my Amerson (saved $4M in the process), but we’re not going to be able to get Jarvis Landry back.

I moved the moon to make this happen (restructures, and cutting both Pouncey and Timmons). We’re just barely able to sign our Draft class with enough money to sign low-key replacements. We’d have to KILL the ’18 Draft in order for this to work, man.

    http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/tools/roster/miami-dolphins/2018/e5b92c9dc1b323b9dd8f3504e165cba2/

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

What’s more, this assumes that Brandon Doughty is our backup QB, we lose William Hayes and Damien Williams (among several other key cogs), and we’re still against the wall via the cap. In short, it’s impossible to land Kirk Cousins without KILLING the rest of our team… and his estimated value IS $25M/year, as I accounted for.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I take it you listen to the Omars and Walkers, that it takes $6M to sign our draft class.

I want Landry here more than Cousins.

    We should have drafted Deshaun.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m with ya on Landry over Cousins, but there was no need to draft Deshaun when we had Tannehill and Moore in-house. In retrospect after Tanny’s injury? I hear ya, but we didn’t know then what we know now.

Time to watch for NCAA QBs this year, man. IF Cutler doesn’t cut the mustard and now knowing that Tannehill has a serious issue, it would be wise to go after a QB early in the ’18 Draft: the money we’d save would be YUGE.

  29. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

M, don’t get yourself too worked up bro things have a way of working themselves out. For instance when Suh is DPOY he’ll sign and extension with a cap friendly first year ( and a big bonus) and we’ll be fine.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

As always, I’m not trying to get too far ahead of things, Bro. Just keeping a passive eye on the future as a good GM would do.

Until this season even begins (I continue to stress this to ALL!), there’s no need to OVER-speculate. For all we know, Tannehill remains our future. For all we know, Cutler is our future. For all we know, Raekwon may make All-Pro this year. For all we know…

Agreed. I think the same plan is in place for him as Tannehill. Make the throws that are there, make a few bigs plays here and there, protect the ball and hand it off. Then we need to play good solid and STs. We’re not going to win because of any one player.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

  33. Randy's avatar Randy says:

As I mentioned before, it’s Cutler’s penchant for making boneheaded plays just as often as good ones that worries me. Both he and Moore tend to get a little nonchalant in their play sometimes. Cutler is a gunslinger in that he tries to make plays out of nothing…great when it works…really shitty when it doesn’t. This offense can’t succeed doing that. When you play good teams like we will be this season, you can’t make mistakes…and ball control is crucial. It’ll be very interesting to see if Cutler protects the ball and plays consistently. We don’t need flash. We need steady.

thanks. I may have to tough it out and get the game pass. Its really for the 1st 2 games since the 3rd game is on live and the last game is only the scrubs.

Too bad for Langford…..he was one of the good guys you couldn’t help but like.
    ————————————–
The Colts announced that defensive end Kendall Langford has been released with a failed physical designation. Langford ended last season on injured reserve due to a knee injury suffered during training camp and he had surgery this offseason in an attempt to correct the problem, but the Colts aren’t going to wait to see if he comes around.

any one remember the scene of John Kerry phone call to russia going unanswered his first day as secretary of state. Well this is very similar but deals with sound science as a weapon. Amazing how they can single out targets vs. non targets

At least he’s not eating a hotdog on the sidelines.

Or smoking a cigarette. It’s against the stadium rules.

Only Chris Hogan and DeSean Jackson had more yards per catch than Kenny Stills in ’16 (Julio Jones 4th).

Another one that got away. 7-11 is still open all day.

for those worried about Cutler on the sidelines having doctors surrrrounding him well he has his blood sugars teated at least 15 times during games and several times between the game,halftime/ and after. His glucose is determeined then he is given shots for adjustnment for what is deamed is safe for his situation. It could be more tests during the games because of the S.Florida humid conditions and because Beta cells react differrtly in the environmental situation.

Thinking normally bland James Walker met up for drinks with O at a bar…..”The Miami Dolphins just made a $10 million mistake.” And that line is hist first one. Not like he was saying that before.

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Pretty obvious Gase did not want to have Moore starting……then have to rely on Doughty.

Walker is right…..should have just tanked the season. SMH

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah right just tank the season and not care about all the other players working their asses off.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The Bears comparisons are stupid. We’re a much better team than they were.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

They can extend Landry and have his next year – when th current one ends. Kind of a dumb argument by James Walker. He doesn’t make a lot of good arguments

  70. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Walker comes across as a hater in that article. WHATEVER!

GO DOLPHINS! 12-4 and AFCE CHAMPIONS!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If we can play solid defense this season we can definitely have a good season. I do believe the offense will score enough. To me our season is about the defense playing better.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

would have been nice to see Tannehill continue to get better
but I really think the key to winning this year is our defense improving (hopefully significantly) and continue where we left off in terms of running the ball

Cutler has an arm a defense can’t ignore, So I think he helps the running game

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yes and Stills and Parker are two WRs a defense can’t ignore vertically.

  71. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’d like to see Drake bust out tonight. He should be getting most of the early carries, it would be nice if he crushed it tonight.

  72. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Remember too that first PS games are notoriously sloppy. It’s cool to see some young guys play for the first time but the units are so mixed and matched that there isn’t much chemistry.

what sucks about the pre season is all the thursday primetime shows are gone somewhere … big bang, and others.

  77. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

After reading that Walker trash piece, I clicked on articles in which Zach Miller the TE for the Bears and Kyle Long the OG both spoke very highly of Cutler.

  78. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

For those of you who want to do it, you can do a 7 day free trial with NFL Game Pass. You can then cancel it but it’s $99.99 if you want to see all 4 PS games.

  80. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

well even if they don’t play their starters long, we might be able to tell something about our run d because Atlanta had a really good rushing attack last year.

what a difference a week makes at the stadium—my wife can’t even give away 3 tickets to tonights game. Last week we had real football and event planners says they could have sold 700k tickets for a exhibition game. My wife’s company paid 12k for 6 tickets.
