Dolphins bolster QB position

dolphins-football-21678-jpg.

With Ryan Tannehill very likely out for the season, the Miami Dolphins acted quickly to make sure they were competitive in 2017.  Some of the names on the list of candidates were of horror movie stuff.  Kyle Orton?  Tim Tebow?  I’m not going to hide my preference, we all know I favored Kaepernick, based only on a pure talent standpoint, and IMO, his potential in Adam Gase’s offense.  I do however, completely understand, and endorse the choice of Jay Cutler.  Gase and Cutler have a synergy.  They can sound off to each other, listen to each other, take criticism from one another, and do it in a manner where both still like and respect one another.  That, in and of itself is worth a lot.

As it has been well documented and discussed over and over, Jay Cutler had his best season with Adam Gase, and there’s reason to believe with the talent we have in our offense here in Miami, that Cutler could easily surpass the numbers he put up in Chicago in 2015.  Jarvis Landry, Devante Parker, Kenny Stills, Jay Ajayi, Julius Thomas, Leonte Carroo, Kenyan Drake, Cutler has plenty of nice weapons to exceed what he did in 2015.

clipboard

I guess the big question is, does Jay Cutler start?  I think that’s the plan, unless there are any setbacks for Jay Cutler.  I like Matt Moore, and he’s definitely a capable QB.  On the other hand, he’s a BACKUP QB, not a starter.  He’s excellent at spending time on the sidelines, and then answering the call to come in and get the job done.  Could Jay Cutler do that if he spent weeks on the sidelines, and Moore was injured, and be expected to step in and get the job done immediately?  I’m not so sure about that.  It takes a certain mindset to work that way, much like a relief pitcher in baseball.  Good relievers are worth their weight in gold in MLB, and good backup QB’s are much the same.  Moore has shown, and possibly even preferred to be the backup.  He had opportunities to go elsewhere to compete for a starting job, but there was a certain comfort staying here in Miami as the backup.  No shame in that, he’s one of the best backup QB’s in the NFL, whereas as a starter, he would be towards the bottom of the pack.

tannehill

So what of Ryan Tannehill?  I think it’s clear as day that whether Ryan Tannehill gets the surgery now, or 6-8 weeks from now, he’s having surgery and is not really in consideration as our QB for this season.  In other words, he’s done for the season, it’s just a matter of when he has the surgery.  It’s a shame, because many of us felt this was the year Ryan would reach great heights, and realize his potential, but now it’s all on hold for 2018.  None of this is official of course, just official in MY mind.  Get the surgery, come back fully healthy with a stable knee, and kick ass in 2018.  Don’t linger too long wasting time, get it done, and make it happen next season.  Unfortunately for Ryan Tannehill, his first OUT in his contract comes up in 2018, meaning if the Dolphins terminate his contract, of the $17.5M of his contract, only $4.6M is dead money.  If you’re rooting for Ryan (Like I am), also know that number drops even further down in 2019 to a $2.3M dead cap hit, meaning if the Dolphins want to give Tannehill 1 more year to figure out if he could reach a higher level of playing, they can do that.  A great year by Jay Cutler could certainly complicate that picture, but I’ll take the complications!

Phish, I agree it’s time to draft a young QB who has NFL caliber talent to develop. It doesn’t have to be 1st or even 2nd rd but it needs to be a guy with an NFL arm.

But, now, the GASE ERA enters its second season. It’s been a year marked, so far, by horrid luck. But, as we all know, things do and WILL change. We WILL find new stars from the rubble. Guys will get a chance who, without these injuries, might not have gotten a fair shot. Hopefully, Ajayi will be ready for game 1. Larsen may be back for game 9. GASE will bring in replacements from other teams’ final cuts. And I think Cutler, now secure in his role, likely will have a decent to really good season.

Are we Super Bowl contenders this year? Probably not. Given a change in our luck, could we be contenders NEXT SEASON?? –You betcha! Both Tanny and McMillian will come back with the eye of the tiger. Our O-Line figures to be better. Our over abundance of wide receivers could fuel a meaningful trade that brings us a quality starter at a position of need. 45. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Asiata did look good in the clip above. I still think he’s custom-built to play RG, but I see no reason (yet) why he can’t be a very good LG in time.

JMO, but Asiata would be ‘plug-n-play’ from day 1 at RG (the non-blind side) while Jermon Bushrod could probably make a nearly seamless transition to LG (his natural side where his muscle-memory resides). That would be my answer to Larsen going out for half the season. We’ll see what happens.

  46. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’ve gotta say… we’ve done very well regarding (my mantra!) POSITIONAL FLEXIBILITY.

While Larsen’s loss will hurt us, it won’t kill us being we have others who can flex to LG.
While Raekwon’s loss will hurt us, it won’t kill us being we have others who can flex to MLB.

But regarding the loss of Tannehill, we HAD to bring another QB in being we don’t trust Doughty to backup Moore… or maybe even just handing the reigns to Moore.

    But please… NO MORE INJURIES!!!

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Injuries are the leveler but hard to avoid. Just luck of the draw mostly. Last time we made the playoffs was when Brady went down.

  47. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

    Dan Graziano, ESPN Staff Writer

Ryan Tannehill’s $17.975 million salary for this year is fully guaranteed. But only $5.525 million of his $17.475 million 2018 salary is guaranteed against injury. He has no guarantees left other than that, which means the Dolphins could move on from Tannehill after this year with very little financial commitment left.
    ————-
Would argue against “very little”…..but still get why it is in there, and why Ryan is a much better sell next year after the surgery than without it.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Correct… we’ve known for well over a year that 2018 could be Tannehill’s “escape hatch” with his mere $5.5M guaranteed. I took that into account the other night when I showed Son a best case scenario to land Kirk Cousins… and we both agree it’s not worth it, especially being we’d be unable to re-sign Landry.

Best case scenario? Ask Tannehill to restructure next year to free-up some $$$. He’s getting PAID this year to rehab, least he can do is restructure next year for the sake of the team.

    TOP 5 GRADES

T Eric Smith, 83.8 overall grade

DI Nick Williams, 82.8 overall grade

DI Lawrence Okoye, 82.7 overall grade

LB Chase Allen, 82.7 overall grade

    PERFORMANCES OF NOTE:
T Eric Smith, 83.8 overall grade
It was a good day for the undrafted free agent out of Virginia, who played the second most snaps among all Dolphins offensive players (55 snaps). He allowed just one late QB hurry on 35 pass blocking snaps for a pass blocking efficiency of 97.5, tops of any tackle so far this preseason with at least 23 snaps in pass protection. He also finished with an impressive run blocking grade of 85.3.

WR Francis Owusu, 80.9 overall grade
It was impressive to see Owusu with such a high grade considering he only had two catches all game. But both catches were on throws over 20 yards in the air, which means Owusu had a perfect 100.0 percent catch rate on deep throws. Both catches were impressive back shoulder catches on third down, one of which went for a touchdown, which only added to Owusu’s impressive performance.

EDGE Terrence Fede, 85.5 overall grade
The former seventh-round draft pick played just 16 snaps but made his presence felt, generating a hit and a hurry on just six pass-rushes, for a pass rush productivity of 25.0. Fede also made two combined defensive stops, and finished the game with team-high overall grade of 85.5.

DI Lawrence Okoye, 82.7 overall grade
Okoye was disruptive in both the run and pass game, collecting two quarterback hurries, two tackles, and two solo stops on the night.

He did his best to answer them Thursday with a superb run-blocking performance in only 17 snaps, with an 85.7 run block grade, a game-high.

Good article, and my favorite type of player in Harris. One that knows he can always get better and will work relentlessly to get where he wants to be, but unlike Taylor he’s got a lot of help on the DL, so he doesn’t have to do it all himself.

Interesting read. That’s what you want (expect?) to hear about your rookies, especially one drafted so high. I’ve never hear that story about Jordan though- no wonder he was a bust.

Asiata opened his hole on every running play he had in that clip and stonewalled the rusher on every pass blocking job. He even helped out another OL after sealing his own guy off.

    Mike,
Good article. I don’t think there is any chance Cutler is not our starter if he is healthy. He’s getting $10 million guaranteed, that alone makes him he starting QB. The Cutler situation is interesting, but I wonder what his mindset is regarding his future. He did retire recently, would a good year change his thinking on that? Only he knows that for sure. It would make me a bit nervous to count on someone who retired for the long term. I wonder if they try to renegotiate Tannehill’s this offseason to lower his number for the next few years and minimize their risk financially. We ‘ll soon find out.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

believe if they do resign Tannehill they will give him a signing bonus and spread it over the life of the contract thus making the early years very cap friendly.

Correct. We need some salary cap relief for next season, and we need to protect against the possibility of Tannehill not becoming who we hope he can be. Suh’s needs to be redone as well.

What a disappointing morning. I was expecting a ice cream machine for the kids(lol) I bought on amazon Friday and the tracking said it would arrive by 8pm last night. I have been excited since I ordered it and have gotten the hundreds of recipes ready to make it. Most only have 4-5 ingredients so how hard can this be. Well, 7.30 pm came, it was getting real late and I couldn’t hold out any longer into the dark night. I woke up this morning like a kid on xmas morning hoping the ice cream maker was left on the porch. Nothing I looked everywhere even under my rocker. The hell with church this morning. I looked it up on amazon acct and they rescduled the delivery for Wednesday. Yesterday,,,the damn site said before 8pm. Amazon prime sucks. Now, I have to go to grocery store and buy 10-15 pints sizes of different ice cream flavors I have been dreaming about and eat them in parking lot before coming home.

Gase downplaying the McMillan injury said, he was only figured to play 30% of the D snaps anyways, so STs were a given. I think as the year went on he would’ve gotten a little more, but it’s not like we lost a Jones or Wake. Basically this injury doesn’t change much, but it still sucks.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

He might have been edging towards the bright side on that, but never had any doubt that when we went to the nickle that it would be Alonso and Timmons, even if to my mind that still left open close to half the snaps for the young rook.

  66. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think Hull was inserted into MLB to minimize change, but I expect Timmons in the middle and Hewitt outside, Riley based on size and how he looked on Thursday will also be given a shot. This team took adversity last year and laughed at it, no change this year. Gase does what he does.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

And part of what he does is set up a lot of flexible play pieces so he is not set into one option. Think the draft showed that. He’d probably never admit, but guessing the coach he models himself on most is belichick.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

as long as Gase stays on the sunny side of honesty, that is a great role model to emulate.

S Ironhead Gallon, 78.6 overall grade

DI Olsen Pierre, 78.5 overall grade

S Harlan Miller, 77.8 overall grade

    PERFORMANCES OF NOTE:
T Ulrick John, 84.3 overall grade
After latching on with Arizona early last season, John did not see the field until Week 12 for the Cardinals and the results were not pretty. In three games, he allowed three sacks, four hits and 12 hurries for an overall grade of 32.6. John was much improved on Saturday night though as he did not allow one pressure on his 31 snaps in pass protection, good for a pass protection grade of 86.3.

She’s very smart, also graduated from Georgia Tech in engineering, although a bit too much of a mommy’s girl / daddy’s girl type for my taste. She works at Braves games. She’s the camera director for crowd and fan shots and close-ups on anything not in the game itself.

Now how’d she get a neat job like that? Well her daddy is in charge of electronics at the stadium.

Aside from the next wife being better…….we sent out invitations to everyone to join us on a three-day Carnival Cruise. Only twenty-some showed up. Liked it much better. The people that cared did enough to pay to be there and we had a lot of quality time. Think my whole cost on the wedding (other than our travel) was like two grand.
