NFL Week 2 – Game 1 MIA @ LA Chargers

Jay-Cutler-Miami-Dolphins-600x399

The season finally begins for the Miami Dolphins!  No need to explain why, we all know about Hurricane Irma, and what she did to FLA, and pertaining to football, what she did to the Dolphins and the schedule.  So here comes GAME 1, and we’re already in LA, as the Dolphins traveled out a few days ago to get out away from Irma, and now start practicing for their 1st game of the season.

The Chargers gave the Broncos a good fight on MNF, coming all the way down to the last few seconds of the game, when Chargers kicker Younghoe Koo lined up for a game tying 44 yard FG, which the Broncos blocked in order to preserve the victory.  The Broncos stuck to the ground game against the Chargers, with a combination of C.J. Anderson and former Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles.  Denver rushed a total of 36 times, Anderson 20, Charles 10 and QB Trevor Semian 6, for a grand total of 140 yards, and QB Trevor Semian had the only rushing TD for DEN.

Although the Chargers didn’t run that much against the Broncos, if they have success against our front 7, I think they will continue to pound the ball on us with a combination of RB Melvin Gordon and Brandon Oliver.  The Chargers only ran 22 times against DEN, but Rivers had success through the air, throwing 3 TD’s and completing 22 of 33 attempts for 192 yards.  Of course being down 24-7 in the 3rd quarter changes your gameplan, so even if they wanted to run, they needed to throw to catch up.

The Dolphins O-line will be tested against these Chargers.  The Chargers front 7 is stocked with talent.  2nd year DE Joey Bosa brings the heat from the Left side (Like Cam Wake), and DT’s Corey Liuget and Brandon Mebane are stout interior defenders along with another good pass rusher, DE Melvin Ingram.  Ingram also moves to OLB, and that versatility makes him worth that much more.  Dolphins need to know where Ingram is all the time.

The Dolphins will be starting 2nd year OL Laremy Tunsil at LT, with veteran Anthony Steen next to him at LG.  All Pro Mike Pouncey will start at C, with veteran RG Jermon Bushrod next to him.  RT Ja’Wuan James is the other bookend.  This line will have it’s hands full with the Chargers D-line, especially Bosa, who will be a serious challenge to start the season for Ja’Wuan James.

The Dolphins have to get the J-Train rolling, and keep it rolling.  We all have visions of Jay Cutler throwing rainbows all over the field to Parker, Stills and Grant, because he can, but if the Dolphins are going to be successful in 2017, the J-train will once again be the key.  Cutler will challenge defenses deep, and that’s great, but let’s keep that in check, and let the J-train tire out the defense, give us the edge in T.O.P, and keep the defense rested.  We know Ajayi gets tons of yards after contact, but it would be great if that contact wasn’t 2 yards in the backfield, and maybe 5 yards upfield.  I expect this offense will never be built for Jay Cutler to do too much, but rather just enough.  Some games we’ll have to lean on him, but that won’t be the plan going in.

With Devante Parker, Kenny Stills, Jarvis Landry, Jakeem Grant, Leonte Carroo, Julius Thomas and Kenyan Drake, there is a plethora of targets for Cutler.  He’s got to feel good about that.  That being said, let’s hope Cutler doesn’t need to throw the ball 30 times or more.  I’d like to see us run the ball 25-30 times, and Cutler have 25 or less pass attempts.  Of course the game may dictate otherwise, but that would be ideal in my mind.

On defense, I expect to see a smattering of Rey Maualuga.  I think he’ll be out there to start, but there will be plenty of substitutions, with Hull seeing plenty (read majority) of the playing time.  Timmons and Alonso will be in the nickel, and probably Alonso in the dime.  Can’t wait to see #20 (Reshad Jones) back patrolling the secondary, and I’m also curious to see who starts opposite Xavien Howard at CB.  I think we’ll see both Maxwell and Verner, but I think we’d be better served with Maxwell on the perimeter and Verner inside.  As for the “battle” on the D-line, it looks like the Dolphins took the safe route, and will have Jordan Phillips line up next to Suh, but Godchaux will see time as well, especially if Phillips isn’t perceived to be giving max effort.  That’s something to keep an eye on.

So, Game 1 of 16 in a row starts Sunday at 4:05PM in Los Angeles for our Miami Dolphins.  I know I’m amped up, I would imagine you are too.

GO DOLPHINS!  Zero in!

I’ve heard from a number of friends it’s a good movie, but it’s not really that scary. I imagine if you are afraid of clowns, it’ll be scary as hell even if it’s not really that scary.
    ———
Oh, man… that SUCKS to hear it’s not really that scary! I’m sure I’ll enjoy it, but I was hoping it would be VERY scary. Clowns have never scared me, but Pennywise creeped me out between his fangs and Tim Curry’s voice.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I don’t know it first hand, and fear tolerance and triggers differs from person to person, so it might be scary to some and not others, but literally everyone I know says it’s a great movie, but they wish it was scarier and had more Pennywise.

I love the story and the TV show, even though it’s campy as hell. Tim Curry was awesome. I can’t wait to see IT. I am waiting for the same reasons you listed above. The theater experience sucks because people are douchebag assholes that can’t stay off their damned phones for the length of a movie. Every time I go, I want to punch somebody.

Pouncey is the leader of that unit hands down, and probably one of the most accepted leaders of our team. Its not really a matter of liking him or disliking him as much as thats just how the others around him see him. Gase sees him that way. He talks about Pouncey almost with a level of respect beyond that i have hear him talk about other players with. Obviously the guy is doing something right in the lockeroom to be so well received.

So for those who remember my Sunday Ticket concerns, here is how it went down…

On Tuesday we got an email from our cable company that between the National CTV and TSN Feeds if you subscribed to Time Shift option ALL GAMES WOULDBE AVAILABLE

Early Sunday there were 9 games and we had 11 cable feeds.. 5 showed Cleveland/ Piitsburgh , 2 had Atlanta/ Chicago , 2 had Green Bay i think and two had Tennessee/raiders … DAZN , the streaming option for (supposedly) Sunday Ticket had all games available , but it was Game zone, where to switch between games i had to close the feed, lick to new feed, open new feed and wait for it to come into focus, so basically 45 seconds to switch feeds…

For the late games we had i believe 5 feeds on cable showing 2 games .. to watch wifes 9ers play we had to stream the game .. there were times where you could not even see the ball due to buffering, and that was without changing the feed … apparently Twitter was blowing up with US Media laffing at us and our displeasure… NFL sent out a message on Monday saying they are aware and are keeping an eye on how it does/doesnt work…

I did not have a problem paying 50.00 a month to watch the games , why did they decide to fuck with it.. just so millenials can watch on their phones ?? What about the people who dropped shit tons on Large Home Screens ??

I hope this experiment dies a quick miserable death.

Toba, if Ajayi has a big year which we hope he does, he’s not going to play for what he’s currently being paid next year. It’s a good problem to have because you have good players. But you can’t pay everyone. The 2017 season will answer a lot of questions heading into the offseason. Not all of them but a good amount. Let’s hope we can make the playoffs again and anything can happen. We’ll deal with the future in the future. 😉

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed on Grant and Drake. We have a lot of talent at the skill positions. Deep! We’re not a two or three man band. If the OL can do a solid job, the skill will show itself.

Gase has said he feels the offense has to do a better job helping the defense by being better on offense. It’s a time tested formula. Let’s hope we can do it. 🙂

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Cutler gets a bad rap for all sorts of reasons. The bottom line is he has the skill to play the game at a high level. Many QBs circling throughout the NFL do not. Jay Cutler vs. Josh McNown etc.? LOL

Hopefully, Gase will continue to lead this team in the right direction. Hopefully, the Fins have an outstanding “BYE-LESS” season. And hopefully this time next year I’ll be saying “That man (Ross) is a football winner.” BUT, like everyone else, he’s got to “SHOW ME.” And I hope he does.

Ross clearly wants the best for this team. He does a lot for the community, he’s willing to pay whatever he has to improve the team. You don’t have to have a “glowing” opinion of him, but I don’t get the hate. I just don’t. You’re quite entitled to your own opinion as a long time fan and season ticket holder, but I’m surprised you don’t see how hard Ross tries to make this team better. If we make mistakes like that, please bring it to our attention. Thank you!

    • D's avatar D says:

I saw an article by a non dolphins reporter that slammed Cutler for the same remark, indicating that Ingram pwned Cutler with that one simple reply. I was reading about it, and the producer was lamenting how much material he had to leave out to make it fit into a 46 minute program. That’s a shame, they should let them make it as long as it needs to be. They have so much duplication on that channel anyway, there shouldn’t be a problem squeezing in a 2 hour slot, instead of 46 minutes.

Ya know, it’s really difficult to fathom that none of Marino’s WRs have ever made the HOF. Montana had Rice, Manning had Harrison, Aikman had Irvin, Kelly had Reed, Bradshaw had Stallworth, etc, etc.

Perhaps it’s more telling about how great Marino was… without the aid of a HOF WR like so many others.

    ———————————————-
Possibly a combination of all of that lo, but most likely its just a matter of being extremely busy at work every morning, and even though i do big posts in rapid succession in the afternoon i have more gaps between stuff to do then

  75. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Marino didn’t have a csonka but he was surrounded by talent. We can stop pretending he was surrounded by scrubs. It’s neither here or there because griese has nothing to do with the post I responded to which was about all the hall of fame QBs and their wrs.

    • D's avatar D says:

They didnt have much balance to their offense though, it made it easier to predict what the game plan would be. They never had an established run game, just spurts of time with one that was above average.

I agree he had two great WR’s that he had great chemistry with one that was a second year player when he got there and the other that was brought in the same year as him. They werent pure talent players like Rice, Duper was a 2nd round pick, Clayton would have been a priority UDFA if his draft had been done now (8th round selection). I think that’s why people always reference the talent around him and say Marino elevated their level instead of vice versa.

He also had a span of time where his OL was pretty good, though a lot of footage will show you that he spent a lot of time with players that only looked good because of his quick release, as Danny got slapped around quite a bit and just made remarkable throws at the last second.

I mean i know you are yanking chains but i really do think that Marino was never in a position with a strong team around him, not nearly as strong as i have seen around some of our more recent stand ins.

I strongly believe that if Marino had played the majority of his career with a back like Ricky Williams, Ronnie Brown of Jay Ajayi, he would easily have had a couple of rings much better stats (so would have the RB’s i mentioned) and probably a longer life in the NFL.

It could work so long as no politics was involved….that one is a bad path. And am talking off-topic articles.

    • D's avatar D says:

Im not a fan of politics, at least not what currently is going on, i wouldn’t be political, but i also am not shy from controversial subjects, the idea that spurned all of this was something that started off as curiosity about the weight of the human brain, which was a tangent conversation yesterday, but as i was researching it, i uncovered a ton of really need facts which confirmed a lot of philosophies i have always felt to be true but never before had the science to support it.

I had typed out this huge monolithic post a little while ago only to cut it out to another document because it was just too big to be a random post, unrelated to the subject that was being discussed, so i thought maybe a article submission might have been more appropriate.

Part of it may have been too the title i came up for the “series” if it developed into one was “Random thoughts of a D-bag” which i tickled myself coning up with that title lol. I’m fairly self entertaining lol.

  92. D's avatar D says:

The Charges have a few LB’s playing out of position in their system or have relatively little experience in that postion in their system. They run a hybrid 3-4 4-3 with a LB called the OTTO which flexes in and out of the responsibilities and position line up of a 3-4 OLB, a 4-3 SOLB and a 4-3 DE. They also run a LEO LB, which is conceptually a wide 9 DE, but can stand up as an OLB giving a more true 3-4 or even a 5-3 look with the OTTO and LEO on the line, both can be hands down and more in toward the tackles, one out wide one in, both out wide, etc.

Seattle has been running a variant of this for a while and i believe they always called the LB’s LEO but they could have two LEO’s in their system and they could bring in a guy to be the second LEO, split a DE out wide and stand them up to man the LEO, or just bring the WILL up and have him take the role of a second LEO.

I was mentioning this stuff back just after draft because i thought with Harris we could run this defense pretty well and we could get more snaps with Harris in there if we did. Especially with McMillian going down, i really think we should consider it, and i think possibly we may even see that or we were going to before McMillian got hurt. The perfect lineup i could see would be DE Wake, NT Phillips, DT Suh, LEO Harris, OTTO Timmons, WILL Alonzo, MIKE Hull/Maualuga. Obviously you rotate Hayes and Branch in mor eon running downs, and you probably switch your D around to be more straight 4-3 when they are in, letting them set the edges, they might even sub in for Wake at DE some while Harris is playing tin the LEO position as well.

In this defense, Timmons would be the OTTO and could be called on to rush the passer, he could be called on to cover, set the edge against the run, etc. There really isnt much of a limit on what his assignment can be and having a vet you has done it all, as well as someone sturdy in the run game would really be an asset in that position.

Since pass rush is almost exclusively what the LEO would do, Harris would be a good guy, because you could get him out wide and use Suh to draw the tackle’s attention making it really hard to choose between single defending Suh gap penetrating between OG and OT and stopping Harris with his fast get off on good speed moves on the outside.

Phillips would be a 1 tech DT/NT in this formation.

Suh would be a 5 tech DT.

Wake, Branch, and Harris could all play the DE or LEO role in these formations, though i would probably only have Hayes play DE. If Wake or Harris were already subbed in when they switch to this formation, they could easily switch to a double LEO, putting both guys out wide.

There are a tons of ways to play off this formation, bringing Jones in like Nickle LB and bringing Alonzo up as the second LEO, Wake in as DE, Harris as the other LEO, then you have a better coverage set with the same look, etc.

  93. D's avatar D says:

Herd, that might work, its just some think of this as a football blog so i dont wanna mess with that if its not something people want to read.

  94. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

The RT discussion is a valid one. Speculation, but that is what fans do.

So let’s say the Fins’ go deep into the play-offs or…dare I say it…to the Super Bowl with Cutler. How do you not bring him back? So the question becomes, do you try to work deals with both Cutler and RT, trade RT (because you could get a high pick for him) and draft the future, let Cutler walk and go with RT?

Figure you have 3-5 years if you go with Cutler (more to the 3 end) and 7-10 with RT. I think Cutler is, and would continue, playing for pride not money and would probably come as a bargain. If he plays well this year, they have leverage over RT to re-work his contract, so they could keep both. Depends on whether their egos would fit.

To me Politics cant be discussed because you cannot tell me one terd is better than another….even if you think one is because it has peanuts or corn. Shit is shit and right now there is nothing good to discuss on that subject.

Religon is a personal thing in my opinion, its a relationship like any other that understood by the people involved in it and everyone has their reasons for why they are in the relationship they are in. No more can you walk up to a man and ask him why he is with “that bitch” or woman that, “that asshole”, can you tell a man or woman what their relationship with God or belief that there is no god can be, because these are very close relationships and no matter if they are driven by blindness in your opinion they are diver by love in the other person opinion. Therefore to me is not debatable, there is only understanding from the other sides perspective that can be obtained by discussion, not debate.

They are discussing it. Key West, Stock Island and Boca Chica came through pretty well, but the rest of the keys below the seven mile bridge were hammered. Especially Big Pine and Cudjoe.

Really suck for people down there. Most of them haven’t worked for a week or more and even after they are allowed to return, there is not going to be much work for awhile. We have continued to pay our employees a full check and will look to hire a few more when we get back in.Seemed right thing to do.
