2018 Miami Dolphins – Free Agency – OT

Last week we took a look at the inside guys, the OG’s, but with the possible loss of our RT Ja’Wuan James, we’ll see who’s available to fill that spot.  Of course, we may already have that player on our roster (Jesse Davis), but they may want Davis to continue as the swing man, who can play either OG or OT.  Just so you know, the top guy available is Nate Solder and I’m not even going to add him to the list, because we’re not paying him $13M+, so forget that.  It’s slim pickins folks, I’ll show you what I think are the “best” 5.

Austin Pasztor  6’7 305  27YO

Austin Pasztor, Quinton Dial

Pasztor played last season on a 1 year deal with the Falcons after being the odd man out of a very talented Browns OL.  Pasztor has played both RG and RT and played and started all 16 games for the Browns in 2016.  Last year he was the swing man for the Falcons and he only saw action on 7 games.  Pasztor was an UDFA in 2012, and signed by the Jaguars.  He played in 15 games for the Jags in 2013 starting 12.  At worst, he could be a depth guy for us, or if somehow we don’t draft a solid OL, he can be a decent starter.

***************************************************************************************

Greg Robinson  6’5 332  25YO

panthers-lions-football-9b303d8e19c3d0d7

It’s unusual to see a 25YO OT hit the free agent market, but that’s where the former 1st RD pick is today.  Robinson was overdrafted by the Rams in 2014 at #2 overall, and Jeff Fisher rolled him out at both LG and LT in all 16 games, starting 12. Robinson played his college ball at Auburn, and the Rams went all in on the NFL combine superstar. The 6’5 332 lb behemoth ran a 4.92 40, put up 32 reps, had a 113″ broad jump, so you can see, the big guy can move.  He was a run blocking monster at Auburn, but he struggled with pass protection in college, and those struggles continued in the NFL.  While there’s no questioning his outstanding athletic ability, so far, no one has been able to reach him and get him to better his technique.  He’d be a risk/reward type of signing.  He’s young enough to teach, but do we have the staff in place to do it?  Tough to be confident answering that question.  He’s played 3 full seasons at LT, but maybe RT would be his better side.  Stay tuned.

***********************************************************************************

Seantrel Henderson  6’7 331  25YO

seantrel-story-10-16

Yeah, that Seantrel Henderson.  I wanted us to take a late RD flyer on this kid, because He has the size and athletic ability to become a good OT.  His biggest issue is his strength, as it was coming out of college.  He moves well, but doesn’t have the power.  He may not have the desire either, which has long been one of his knocks, he has the lazy tag.  He has started 26 games for the Bills in his first 2 seasons for the Bills, but the last 2 years he’s been getting splinters on the bench, playing in only 8 games total.  He’d be a cheap sign, that much is true, and if we could get this  kid fired up, he could be a good player, but that’s a big “if”.

***********************************************************************************

Byron Bell  6’5 320  29YO

49e06773bafe892b07306a5cd91e8716-original

Like I said, it’s not a great market out there, and the top dog Solder will really cash in.  Bell played in 12 games last season for the Cowboys, starting only 2, but has been a durable starter for 4 seasons with the Panthers, and 1 season with the Titans. He signed a 1YR deal with the Cowboys last season, and I’m sure he’d love a multi year deal, but I’m not sure if that’s in the cards for the 29 YO RT.

***************************************************************************************

James Hurst  6’5  317

18_JamesHurst_news

Hurst was an UDFA and signed by the Baltimore Ravens in 2014.  He saw action in all 16 games since his rookie season, starting in only 11 games his first 3 seasons, but last year, Hurst started all 16 games at both LG and LT.  Not to kiss Raven ass, but any player that can start 16 games on the Ravens is a player I’d take a look at.  Hurst not only played every game last season, he played well.  He’s played LT, LG and RT.  He’s versatile, and he’s coming into his own, which makes him a solid option for us.

*********************************************************************************

Our own Sam Young is a FA we might re-sign, likely to a short term contract.   If there’s anyone out there you feel should be included, let me know.

Why don’t we just trade Landry to a team that has a all pro OG, and needs a WR?

    Nice job Mike E

Back to Landry…. he has already stated he’s fine playing under the tag. Yes injury is a concern and that’s a big reason the players are screwed by the rule. However, Landry has been an iron man and not missed a game.
My point on Landry was that he still has to approve of any trade as of right now. He doesn’t have to sign a thing until July. Part of me also thinks a lot of this is stirred up bigger than it really is by the media. Still think/hope a deal will be done keeping him here.

New Lions coach, ex-Patriots DC Matt Patricia (pencil still tucked in ear) makes interesting point at NFL combine: defenses aren’t straight 4-3 or 3-4 anymore. “90% of defenses today are sub (packages, nickel, dime, short-ydg, etc)”

Yea, slim pickins across the whole OL in free agency. We must get our 2 guys early in the draft along with 1 FA. If not, this offense will struggle again in 2018.

  8. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

ER – It’s not just injury that can screw Landry, it’s he’s another year older, and what if the Dolphins don’t use him as much as they have in the past, and his stats go way down. He wants to get his big payday now. I’m not saying I know how it’s going to play out, but a cocky guy like Landry you would think would be all up for seeing how much he’s worth on the outside. That’s all I’m saying. If he doesn’t sign the tag, he’s not going to find out until next year.

  9. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Good piece Mike

Honestly I think unless they really think Davis can handle the job –
    Hang onto James

I wouldn’t play musical OTs with this crop and switch out James for another OT unless the savings were significant and we knew there was not a big drop off

I just don’t see us nabbing a quality OT in the draft this year

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I hear that, we’ll probably either re-sign Young or one of these other guys as depth. I think James is gone, which I personally think is a mistake. I’d be happy if they can negotiate a contract with him, and lower his cap hit this season

Well that’s half the good news!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s key for the team to rescind the 5th year option. If James wasn’t healthy, we’d have to pick up his 5th year option.

  17. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Doesn’t the franchise tag allow Landry to negotiate with other teams? So it’s not so much us trading him to a team he wouldn’t want to play for, but a team he’s willing to negotiate with and play for. Then it’s on the Dolphins to accept lesser compensation besides the two 1st rd picks for the deal to get done.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Nope – That’s why the Dolphins tagged him early, so no other team could talk to him, and raise, or validate his contract demands

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Teams can talk to the Dolphins about a trade, but they can’t talk to Jarvis unless the Dolphins are willing to trade with them, and then they can discuss the contract with Jarvis, or they can just have him play on the tag price, which is doubtful

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

A “non-exclusive” franchise player must be offered a one-year contract for an amount no less than the average of the top five cap hits at the player’s position for the previous five years applied to the current salary cap, or 120 percent of the player’s previous year’s salary, whichever is greater. A non-exclusive franchise player may negotiate with other NFL teams, but if the player signs an offer sheet from another team, the original team has a right to match the terms of that offer, or if it does not match the offer and thus loses the player, is entitled to receive two first-round draft picks as compensation.

  18. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – I think they can negotiate with Landry after March 14th, not before. That’s why the Dolphins did this early.

    ————–
Did Armando NOT state a fact? Generally speaking, a first round Draft pick should contribute FAR more. I mean, Mario Williams had 1.5 sacks the year before (1/2 a sack difference!). Derrick Shelby had 3.5 sacks the year before that. And we still haven’t replaced Olivier Vernon’s production after allowing him to walk in FA.

And don’t get me started on the fact that we should have drafted my guy Takkarist McKinley… or that we should have signed either of Melvin Ingram (RECOMMENDED by me!!!) or my guy Bruce Irvin via FA. Or HOW ABOUT re-signing our former guy Chris McCain?

And then you WONDER why Armando would write such things…

    C’MON, BRO!!!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

And many rookie LTs struggle or don’t even play LT their first year. Harris was a rotational rookie until Branch went down. It’s not all about sacks just like the play of a DB is not all about INTs.

Armando says stuff sometimes like nobody who follows the team is aware of.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I disagree, and that’s all good. OMAR is the one who says stuff sometimes like nobody who follows the team is aware of.

      Again… OMAR IS LOST!!!

  32. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Tim,

WE have to ratify, not Jarvis. Omar thinks that Jarvis is in COMPLETE CONTROL… no, he’s NOT. If WE don’t ratify it, NOTHING happens.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So how does this destroy my argument?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

This is just my way of illustrating to you how Omar is LOST!

I think you and I agree 100% on the Jarvis situation! I suppose I’m stuck on you citing Omar for something else. He’s LOST!

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Both sides have some control, but it’s in their best interests to work together, so both Landry and the Dolphins can both try and work out a deal that satisfies both Landry and the team. If both sides don’t cooperate, he’s either going to play for the tag, or worse, MIA will eventually rescind the tag, and Landry will be a FA after teams have already set their rosters, and no longer have cap room to make a deal for him

You cited something from Omar two days ago. You apparently thought that I was attacking YOU… not the case. I said that it would be NICE if it happened, but that Omar doesn’t know what he’s talking about (as usual).

You went on a lengthy post regarding how I was dismissing your ideas. No, man! I was dismissing OMAR’S idea!

For the record, I have no personal beef with Omar. But I no longer follow him being he’s trying to push a radical/communistic ideology, coupled with Black Panther (not the recent movie) agenda.

I do NOT believe in racism/communism/liberalism/socialism/progressive, etc. Omar has PRAISED Castro during the Kaepernick ordeal, and he knows NOTHING about how our black brothers were brutally slaughtered under that pig regime of Castro’s for non-compliance. How DARE he! And not to mention, all of the native Cubans’ lives that were DESTROYED/KILLED under Castro (and that includes family of Armando).

Again… OMAR is LOST. And he might be even worse when it comes to football evaluations. Omar doesn’t even know CFB until about THIS time of the year… when he becomes a so-called “expert”. This is the time of year where he leans on people who HAVE actually watched CFB… not his own eval: he’s a bloody BS-artist, Bro… hence my video post the other night from “HIstory of the World”, featuring Bea Arthur and Mel Brooks.

    Just sayin’… 🙂

My point was what the Sean guy was saying. He was basically asking why can’t the Dolphins just do all the awesome things? LOL

Omar’s reply was simply they can pay Landry, have a good draft and make it back to the playoffs. All of those things are possible and I’m sure the team would love for all that to happen. Unless they really want to move on from Landry. The other two things are still possible and is the goal.

    Mike E

Your 2:21 post is how I feel. They have to work together if Landry is going elsewhere or signs a deal and stays. Landry has said no prob playing on the tag, but of course it’s not his ideal situation. If Phins rescind the tag at the last minute, it’ll be a black eye o the franchise and probably sour a lot of players ever considering playing for them, so I don’t think that happens.

My opinion is worst case Landry plays on the tag.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think the one way the Dolphins would rescind the tag was if Jarvis didn’t sign it until July

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Then he misses the FA signing period which isn’t good for him. The best case scenario for him is to sign it, continue ongoing negotiations with the Dolphins and then see if there are other teams who are interested. I doubt any team will give up two 1st rd picks for him and sign him to a big deal. That’s where the Dolphins come in on what they’d be willing to accept in compensation if they know what the price tag is from other teams. But once a team makes an official offer, they have to give up two 1st rd picks if we don’t match. So communication is going to be key with all parties involved.

  40. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Their parents are two of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. Anyone who praises Castro doesn’t know WTF they’re talking about.

    • There it is. Landry wants more than what Adams just got and no way are the Dolphins giving it to him. Gase said “If we lose Jarvis, we lose “elite” talent” and that may be the way he feels and he didn’t lie to the media but he’s not going to say anything about it otherwise.

Landry is as good as gone one way or another and if we’re going to be aggressive and try to move up to get a franchise qb than he may be part of that trade.

  41. It’s going to be an interesting situation with Landry because we need to re-sign a few of our own free agents and may be interested in signing one or two others.

If we don’t trade Landry soon enough we may no choice but to rescind the tag and let him walk because we’re not going to clear enough cap by just releasing Timmons and Thomas. We’re going to need to make some additional moves to clear cap and if they restructure Suh they’re going to screw the cap up for future years so it wouldn’t be a great idea.

We could decline the 5th yr option on James and extend him to clear some cap this year. That would help but, again, it’s not going to net all that much.

We need to re-sign Parkey and then there’s William Hayes. We screwed the pooch on his contract by giving him an out and reducing his contract to only one year so now we’re going to need to compete for his services in free agency.

It’s a ridiculous situation this team’s management has created and I don’t know how anyone like Ross, who should be used to having competent people around him being in real estate all these years. could possibly look at the individuals running the show in Miami and think they have a clue as to what they’re doing . It’s a complete shitshow.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Seems the easiest way to clear cap would be to redo Tanny rather than Suh. Guarantee him for the next two years, add on and extra non-guaranteed year, pay him his salary this year as a bonus and it will get spread out over the length of the contract.

      • I really don’t think you want to extend a guy who’s not in your future plans.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Well that would be the trade-off, but that money is their for the plucking. Probably like $10 mil of cap this year in that scenario. And it really only is one more guaranteed year……barring some real shocker he is on the roster for 2018.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Who says Tannehill is not in the future plans?

      • Well Tim, all I have to say is if Tannehill is in our future plans then there’s going to be some dark days ahead as a Phins fan because it would only go to show the incompetence of the organization.

If this team is unwilling to make the hard choices and make the changes it needs to make to start building a team rather than just trying to win some games to keep fans interested enough to keep putting butts in the seats its never going to accomplish much as a franchise ever again.

You’ve been on the optimistic side for years and nothing this team has done has given anyone reason to be as optimistic about their situation as you have been.

Again, they don’t even have the money to re-sign their own free agents and they created a situation where, if they want to re-sign Hayes, they now have to compete for him in free agency. WTF?

Yeah, FA sometimes, or really most times ends up in players getting overpaid. As long as we get good compensation as well in the trade, I’m totally fine in another team overpaying Landry.

  45. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Can we wait and trade Landry during the draft if we wanna?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

As long as he signs his tag, and the Dolphins, Landry and the other team all agree on the compensation (Landry his contract) (Dolphins the player(s) or picks we get back in return) sure, it can be done, and it’s definitely a possibility at the draft

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Only if he has signed his tag.

  46. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Lou, you can have your opinion on Tannehill but Gase doesn’t share it so the discussion isn’t worth it this offseason. Maybe after 2018 it will be different but it’s a waste of time now.

How is there any indication RT17 isn’t in the future plans? If you listened to Gase today, seems like everybody realized….

Who is gonna play QB this year if they dump RT17? Doughty? Hahahahaha

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If Gase wasn’t a supporter he wouldn’t have to speak so highly of him whenever the subject comes up. He could be kind of mum like Philbin was the last two years. Gase believes in the upside of Tannehill and that’s all we need to know.

  48. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I think you could replace Tannehill with any one of the top 5 or 6 QBs in this draft. You’re not replacing Dan Marino. I’d draft a QB this year whether Tannehill starts this season or not. Even if we do draft a QB high in the draft, Tannehill will still probably start, so Gase isn’t really saying much. Plus, Tannehill will take a serious hit next year if Landry is gone. He was tannehill’s blankie. Most likely, nobody else will get open and make catches for him like Landry did.
    ***
Besides, until we fix the OL, it won’t matter much unless we get lucky and draft a guy who just comes in and tears it up.

  49. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Randy, I’m interested to see how this QB class fairs. There are some good prospects but the overall consensus is not glowing about any of them. They’re the next crop of QBs in a QB starved league and we all know how that goes. They will all have learning curves unless one of them is the shit and goes off right from the get go in a Marino like way. But it’s rare.

  51. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Lou, many reports are that we’re releasing Thomas and Timmons. Thomas could re-sign but not at his current deal. Timmons wants to go back to PIT anyway. I think we could sign a vet TE like a Fasano, a guy who knows how to play the position and not just be a receiver, and then target one of the TEs in this draft which all seem to be big receivers.

    • Tim,
I just said, we would be looking to reduce the cap hit on Thomas, which means we’d probably bonus him some money and extend him. The FA TE market sucks. And why the hell would you want to sign Fasano?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I was just talking it out, not questioning your point. I said a vet like a Fasano. You need TEs who can block. We could add a guy that nobody has on their FF team but who plays quality snaps as a traditional TE. Then draft the big receiving type being this is a good year for them because college is developing them.

      • yeah, you could. I’m just saying don’t be surprised if we end up NOT cutting Thomas like so many think we will because, when you look at the FA TE market, it’s not very good. and Phins are always in win-now mode. They always feel they’re close and the coaches always are more interested in saving their hides to they aren’t going into the season with the only pass catching threat at TE being a rookie. JMHO. Don’t see it.

  52. Tim,
I understand that Gase may not share my opinion on Tannehill but until Gase and Tannehill prove me wrong they can both go suck an egg. lol

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      LOL

Gase has only two seasons under his belt. He made the playoffs and then the team had a shit season. Ross hired this group to get this thing going and start winning. That’s their job. They either start succeeding or there will be a new group in the next 2 years. That’s why your blow it up scenario is also a waste of time at this time. 2018 will make the future more clear.

      • It’s not a waste of time. The waste of time is trying to make it work and then finding out it’s not going to work. THAT’s the waste of time when you could have made the moves to get the team going in the right direction instead of just trying to win a couple extra games in order to save your jobs.

      • you have to see it for what it is. that’s all these guys are interested in. they’re going to pencil in guys again rather than trying to add talent and get it in there because they’re afraid.

  53. I like Wake and Parker to the Jags for Smoot and Carroll Phillips. Of course, if the Jags would do it. But, if you consider that our DE’s right now are Wake, Malveaux, Woodard, Branch and Harris why wouldn’t you want to bring in two young guys who could help?

  54. rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

Why the hell would we resign Thomas. He doesn’t block like Fasano and when he’s running routes he looks like he’s doing it in the mud. Please, just draft a damn receiving TE already. If they pull this crap yet again this year, I will be really questioning this staff.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’m with you on that…..Thomas showed not much at all. Only way would want him back is as a 2nd/3rd TE option on the real cheap.

      • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

I don’t want him back at all. I would rather resign Fasano for 1 year, keep Derby and Gray, and draft a TE. Fasano can be just a productive as Thomas catching the ball, which isn’t saying much, and he can also block.

      • lol. In his four years in the league Derby hasn’t caught as many passes and td’s as Thomas did last season but, yeah, I can see where you’re coming from on that one. Derby was a college wr who played one yr at TE at ARK and didn’t do much.

But, we’ve got ourselves a good one.

      • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

Fine, resign Fasano, keep Gray, and draft a TE. Is that better?🙄

  55. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Tim — I think Gase’s seat is a bit warmer than you do. Believe he at least has to show some progress this year. Obviously other factors (like Ross liking him) are involved. But how many wins do you think he needs to keep his job? I say at least 7.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I said this team needs to show progress and win. That’s why Ross hired them. I think 2018 is huge for this group. 10-6, 6-10 and not so good again can change things. 10-6, 6-10, say 10-6 and playoffs again and then back to 6-10 or 7-9 could also bring down the hammer.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Just seemed you were assuming Gase had at least 2 years to plan on. The exact number is just a guess, but for sure he would be gone if we went say 3-13.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not definitely 2 years. Have another sub par season and get one more year, start off slow and he could get fired in-season in 2019. I hope the absolute opposite happens. 🙂

Lou, your team view doesn’t mean anything. It’s about what the people in charge think and what they do that matters. Many of your points are based on as if you’re in charge. Can you wait to see what we do in the offseason and in 2018 or are you going to say everything they did is wrong without seeing the results for the next few months? LOL

    • Tim, don’t you think I realize my opinion doesn’t matter. Doesn’t mean I can’t have one and it doesn’t mean the people in charge are going to do something that’s going to really make a difference.

That’s the point. I think you think the people who are in charge of this team are competent and that’s where I think you’re wrong. I understand being optimistic about things and it’s good that you can stay optimistic but there’s no track record to show they’ve done anything the right way that warrants that optimism.

    • and, put it this way. it’s all about consistency. I don’t care if we go 10-6 this season if we can’t do it again next year and continue to improve. it means nothing. if they buy themselves a 10-6 season only to have it turn to shit again next year and the year after that it doesn’t do anything for me.

I’m hungry for a team that’s a consistent playoff contender. I don’t get excited about one winning season out of 15.

  59. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Derby is a developmental TE with some experience now. We have him at the right time. He either is or isn’t a capable TE. He’s a former 2015 6th round pick of the Pats. This is his 4th season. Time to show it. Injuries have hampered him too. Denver waived him injured when we picked him up.

  60. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

The team lost its starting QB for the entire season….I still don’t understand how that doesn’t fit into the equation.

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

This regime has been together for 2 years, but being blamed for the last 15

    • it’s always about the rationalizations. Philly lost it’s starting qb right before the playoffs and went on to win the SB. you can rationalize it all you want. and, guess what? Pederson was in his 2nd yr also.

Look at the moves Roseman made to make the Eagles a better team and look at the moves the Phins front office and HC made to make the Phins a better team.

Gase wanted Cutler and Thomas. Our front office brought in Larsen, brought back Bushrod, signed Timmons and Allen at safety. Then, when McMillan went down, they sign Maualuga. And don’t come back at me with that nonsense that they had no choice once McMillan went down because they could have signed someone different.

Eagles trade up with Miami and we get Alonso and Maxwell plus we eat Maxwell’s contract. Then they move up to get their qb.

Meanwhile, we sit and rationalize because that’s all we can do.

If Tannenbaum is still at the top of this organization 5 yrs from now we’ll be having the same conversation.

      • and then how in the hell do you rationalize that now we’ve got to try and re-sign a guy at DE we could have had for another year but we let him out of the contract? just one stupid move by these guys after another.

I don’t know how they could all be sitting in a room together and saying, “yeah, that would be good”.

  61. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Lou, you’re making scenarios that are not what this team is going to do. On one hand you say the current regime is about winning now then go off on blowing it all up. Which one do you think is going to to be the approach? Let’s go from there because we’re not blowing anything up. Changes yes, a restart no. That’s not why Ross hired these guys. You know that.

    • you’re putting the two together. one is what the team is about and going to do and one is about what I would do. personally, I’ll take my approach any day over what these bunch of morons have in mind because they haven’t got a clue about what they’re going to do.

I don’t believe for a second that the guys at the top are capable of making the decisions that will get this team anywhere WE would like it to be.

And it’s funny how ppl will defend Gase but, at the same time, hate the signings of Cutler and Thomas which were ALL his.

  62. Think about this. Landry had his best season on a 6-10 team with Jay Cutler as his qb.

  63. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

I hated to Cutler signing. But I guess Gase felt it was the best option. Not everyone is cool with going 0-16. If he was, he just would have played Doughty.

Not everyone is always right…..Seems just 1 person is.

  64. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Lou, you think your idea is better great. You don’t run the team. Lots of people don’t like the president but they’re not the president either. Your posts are better when they’re closer to reality than your preferred approach over and over. We’re not doing any of that in 2018. Go with the flow!

    • Like I said. I understand that we’re not going to do ANYTHING I would prefer. and, like I said, it doesn’t mean the team will do any better job. I have no choice but to go with the flow but it doesn’t mean I have to accept it.

Alright. I have no choice. I have to accept it. I don’t have to be happy about it; especially when we see the same mediocre results over and over again.

I do think you’re wrong about 1 thing. you say were not doing any of that in 2018 but I think we go into the season with Gray, Derby and Thomas as our 3 TE’s. maybe we pick up a 4th but I don’t think anyone’s going to be happy about it. I also don’t think Fasano is an option because I think he said he’s pretty much finished at this point.

  65. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

For me we “need” more talent and competition on the OL than we’ve had in years. We need upgrades at TE. We need a backup QB we’re moving on from Moore.

We “want” more talent at DE, LB and RB. Depending on Landry, WR could be an area for more competition.

    • we need more at DE. we have a guy at LDE who is 36 yrs old and nobody else. Harris is a pass rusher at this point and then you’ve got Branch. how long are you supposed to wait to find a replacement for Wake?

    • Starters on the o-line right now are Tunsil and Pouncey and you can talk Larsen all you want and say “well the team views him as a starter Lou. just because you don’t yadda, yadda, yadda” but you’d be reaching again.

we have two starters on the offensive line right now so we’re down 3 guys unless we extend James and then we’re down two. Larsen would be great if we had 4/5 of the line nailed down with experienced, good, solid offensive linemen but we don’t. he’s a solid backup otherwise.

add to that the fact that we have NO cap room and we might have to pull some offensive linemen out of the unicorn’s ass.

  66. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Lou, here’s an example.

Tannehill is going to rebound from his injury and have a fantastic season. You disagree with that but it still hasn’t happened yet. If it does, then what do you do? LOL

  67. again, we have Cam Wake, Cameron Malveaux, Woodard, Branch and Harris at DE. What if we can’t re-sign Hayes?

  68. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We’ll just have to wait and see, Lou.

    • do you just copy and paste that every offseason? lol

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

No it’s always in the back of my mind. 🙂

Most of my comments are based on how I think the team is built. not what I wish it would be in the perfect world. You can see how this team was revised last year, changed coaches, get some guys back, add to what you have and go play. I don’t expect any crazy moves. FA will be a new piece here and there then we draft how ever we go about it.

I’ve said this many times as well, I view our young talent 2-4 years taking another step just as important as the new draftees. We say build through the draft and then have no patience for development. Then there are those UDFAs who show promise but get written off as no upside yet everyone has their UDFA list. WTF is going on? LOL

      • Tim,
I understand where you’re coming from when you’re looking at how the team is built. If you look at it from that perspective it’s a completely different thing and if the front office built around that talent you’re talking about it would be different as well.

If we took guys like Morgan and Ford and gave them some development we’d get real deep and would be tough to beat at certain spots like wr but we don’t seem to want to put the effort into it.

We don’t seem to have the patience when it comes to letting our guys develop into really good starters and solid depth and we go after quick fixes at positions too often without an answer as to how we’re going to address those positions in the near future and then we find ourselves looking for scraps all over again.

We definitely need to bring in some offensive lineman this year at the least. If we can do at least one thing right then, maybe, it will give an indication that we’re not the same team we used to be. But, if we keep going down that same path with that same mentality it’s going to be tough to get any consistency.

  78. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Let’s not forget a lot of the young and new players we acquired in 2017 that will be back to compete now know the playbook. Some new coaches yes, same system. Last season had an eye on the future even with all the current shit that went bad. More players will be ahead of the game than last year. I don’t think we need a dozen or so players, we need 5-6 that make a difference and play important roles, along with getting back some key guys from IR.

    It’s not all dire. 🙂

    • Tim,
the patience thing with Morgan and Ford isn’t what I meant but that’s besides the point.

anyway, with the young guys you talk about, there is an abundance of talent at the wr position on this team and that’s another reason why I don’t think losing Landry is that big of a deal despite what everyone thinks and if anyone thinks that Gase is the genius he is on the offensive side of the ball then when you look at that talent that’s there it definitely should not be a problem to move on from Landry.

wr is the one position we definitely DO NOT need to target early in the draft:

      Grant
      Carroo
      Ford
      Morgan
      Owusu
      Lewis

that’s in addition to Stills and Parker. with talent like that, if we were to add more to it at the tight end and running back positions and then get the offensive line in better shape I don’t see how losing Landry could be that big of a deal. If Gase truly is the guy on the offensive side of the ball the team believes him to be then this group can more than get the job done.

  79. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Wyoming,
I think you picked Welsh in about the right spot. He’s probably a 4th or 5th round guy. He’ll probably end up being a backup G/C. He’s on the small side, so i’m not sure he could hold up at guard. He’s probably a depth player who could maybe be a starter if he gets coached up right.

And yes a whole lot of places to make this team better next year and for the future, but am talking what absolutely has to be done for next season.

With respect to her family’s privacy, we will not be commenting any further.” Sources also told the New York Post that “everyone is afraid to talk about it” at the Patriots’ offices.

M13 — that is an amazing stat. Also makes me think that Parker was getting singled by the team’s top CB a lot. That’s some respect, but seems some credit for that goes to Landry and Stills.

I thought the exact same thing, Stanger… amazing stat!

I think DeVante gets a really bad and unfair rap all too often. Conversely to your opinion, I think a lot of the success of Jarvis and Stills is owed to DeVante. JMO

Really? What’s unfair? The best players still manage to be great, Parker hasn’t even sniffed good yet. Most of it is he can’t stay on the field, but that’s got nothing to do with going up against opposing teams best CB. He has talent, he just hasn’t had one damn good consistent season yet.

I have to agree that DeVante gets an unfair rap at times, but he needs to stay healthy. …but that goes with any player really.

No matter how good you are, if you’re not on the field…

Man some of the plays he makes at times show why we drafted him so high. But you got my point too. Very few teams have a Revis Island like before. Bet you that Julio Jones gets a lot of #2 CBs plus a safety rather than the #1 guy in single. Parker could be that guy though.

rgs – Since M hasn’t answered me, what is unfair about the rap Parker gets? I’m just curious as to what it might be

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He has not had that big season yet and maybe he never will I have no idea. But people talk about him sometimes like he does nothing when he’s had back to back 50+ catch seasons with 56 and 57. Not great but it’s not nothing either.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ok, just for comparison sake, as long as we’re talking about players who aren’t appreciated, Tannehill gets slammed so often my head spins, yet he’s started every game since 2012 until he was injured. Both 1st RD picks, and Tannehill has done a helluva lot more for our team than Parker has.

        No argument here.

        This.

Trust me, he need to play better, especially if we don’t have Landry.

With that said, he is the perfect example why I don’t like taking WRs in the 1st. We can get that production with day 2 and day 3 guys.

Indeed, and that’s the only gripe I have with DeVante… his lack of health.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

He’s played in 43 games in 3 years, and he has only 8 TD’s, and hasn’t even eclipsed 2000 yards yet. We all say it’s his health, but is it? Does he have to be in perfect condition in order to function? It’s football, and most players have nagging injuries, some play through it better than others.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The issues with his foot/ankle hamper his ability to run at his max. It sucks because he flashes what he’s capable of.

It’s his health, man. If he can stay healthy for 16 games, he’s going to be GREAT. And yes, he has sniffed good… that sounds weird, though! LOL

Parker is Ted Ginn and his family.
