This is the last look at free agent offensive linemen. We’ve already covered the tackles and the guards, and now it’s time to look at the centers. This may be an exercise in futility, i get that, but there is always the possibility that we actually move on from C Mike Pouncey, whether it’s due to injury, salary, or a combination of both. So many fans are freaking out because we’re over the cap by $19M, and Mike Pouncey counts $9M against the cap, but this year his dead cap hit is only $2M, so releasing Pouncey for financial reasons is feasible. Can we replace him? I’m here to take a look at whether we can.
Ryan Jensen 6’3 310 26YO

Jensen started all 16 games last season for the Baltimore Ravens. He was drafted by the ravens in the 6th RD of the 2013 draft. He played some at LG and RG before finally becoming the Ravens center last season. He didn’t participate at the combine, but just to compare since the combine is all the rage right now, at his Colorado pro day, Jensen ran a 5.28 40, an 8’2′ broad jump, 25 1/2″ vertical, and put up 30 reps of 225lbs. Once again, I invoke the sentiment that if he can play for the Ravens, he can play for us. Spotrac projects Jensen to be worth around $9M per, so we would have to make his 1st year contract a cap friendly one, which isn’t difficult when you’re doing a long term deal.
**********************************************************************************
Weston Richburg 6’3 298 26YO

Weston Richburg was drafted in the 2nd RD by the Giants in the 2014 NFL draft. He started 47 of 48 games his first 3 seasons with the Giants. In 2017, Westburg suffered a concussion on Oct 1, (Game 4) and his slow recovery forced the Giants to put him on IR, ending his season. Richburg was a solid, if unspectacular starter for the Giants. The fact that they IRed him in his money year showed they didn’t really have any intention of re-signing him. He’s a young, average to above average NFL center. Missing 12 games in his final year before FA will hurt him salary wise, but how much, I don’t know.
***********************************************************************************
Russell Bodine 6’3 310 25YO

Now here’s a guy we should be interested in. Only 25 years old, he has started every single game in his 4 years in the NFL with the Bengals. His combine numbers were pretty impressive. 5.18 40, 42 reps of 225lbs, 29; vertical (both his bench press and vertical were tops). Bodine is a powerful guy who moves people and plays with a mean streak. He sounds like a perfect candidate here, but I have no idea what kind of salary he will be looking for.
************************************************************************************
Brian Schwenke 6’3 314 27YO

I remember watching Schwenke in the Senior Bowl back in 2013 and being impressed by the kid. Stout powerful, with a chip on his shoulder, he did really in the drills, especially the mano a mano drills. He was drafted in the 4th RD in ’13 by the Titans, but his career never really took off there, starting only 30 games over 5 years. If you go by his combine numbers, he matches up pretty well, running a 4.99 40, putting up 31 reps, running a 7’31 cone drill, but all that hasn’t translated into NFL success. He would be an inexpensive pickup, but to expect him to play up to even an injured 80% Mike Pouncey level of play would be unlikely.
**************************************************************************************
Travis Swanson 6’5 312 27YO

So we want to replace one puff pastry with another? Travis Swanson seems to me like Mike Pouncey light (very light!). Just about the same size as Pouncey, Swanson is a finesse player, but was also a 2 time captain at Arkansas. Swanson has 42 starts over 4 years for the Detroit Lions, last year starting and playing in only 11 games. He was put on IR for the 2nd time in 2 years due to concussion issues. It’s been heavily rumored we have interest in Swanson, but I don’t get it. Didn’t we learn from Jordan Cameron? Should we replace our C with gossamer hips for a C with scattered grey matter? I’ll take a pass on that one, thank you! LOL – Is it me, or does Swanson even look like he’s trying to figure out what it is he’s doing on the field?
***********************************************************************************
So this completes the O-line folks. If you have any suggestions of guys I may have missed, feel free to mention them on the blog.

First?
Lol…just happened to click on here just as this was posted…haven’t read it although I’m sure it’s stellar as are all the others. One of the rare times I have to look at the blog during work. It’s month end closing and I have to run these jobs through the system. Pretty much sit and wait til they finish and then start another one. Exciting huh?
Piggy’s posts are interstellar. 🙂

Herd in first and second. Impressive!
OK.. Not a LIAR !!
Huh? Lost me Doggy
Sorry Man !! I Jokingly called you a Liar on the last page when you said NEW BLOG UP and it wasn’t there. 🙂
Ah, gotcha! Piggy keeps leaving sticky stuff on his posts, so the next one doesn’t show up until you clean of his mess. Gross! lol

What’s the plan to restructure Tannehill?
………………………………………………
Turn $11M into a signing bonus, dropping his cap hit from $19M to $8M. The $11M is then spread out over the remaining years of his contract (2018-21, 3 years).
I’m all for it if they can pull it off
But I think the kicker is what portion is gurateeed
They can do a bunch simply by guaranteeing this year cause it mostly isn’t. Still increases out cap in years to come….but not much way around some of that at this point.
Here comes the snow!
I honestly thought it was supposed to come last night
Mike E — actually looks like some real possibilities at center. Tempted to say, but we don’t need one…but then Pouncey’s health is still a Q. And if they want to go “NFL is a business”….his contract is not protected. Unlikely they cut him, but wouldn’t be surprised to see a C/G for us in the draft with a thought to after Pouncey.
We don’t need one at the moment, unless we decide to cut Pouncey now, because he only has a $2M dead cap hit. Anything is possible, so therefore I have to put the options out there.
And you put out the options real well….just good to know that there are a bunch just in case. Pouncey is a major asset if healthy and playing like before. He is signed through 2020 on the relative cheap (if you can call $7-9$ mil that) and, as you pointed out, on a contract that lets us cut him.
16th!
Congratulations 🐽
🍾🐖🍾
Piggy – Typically the signing bonus is the only guaranteed, per say. Player gets that up front.
AB already had to know exactly what it was about…..wonder if this was just to make sure everyone knew it was a help the team in a social media pre-strike.
Pretty cool! Just heard a serious thundercrash. I don’t ever recall hearing thunder during a snowstorm.
PFFT !!! What’s a snowstorm ?
Hey Man… I know that dude !!
LOL at that picture of Travis Swanson. The expression on his face reads
“Dah, quarterback said on two, on two dah…….”
You know what – This just in . . .
Fuck Landry if he doesn’t sign his franchise tag. Seriously. He talks a big game about what he’s worth, but he’s not willing to bet on it. I don’t feel bad for him in any way, shape or form. He wants too much money, we offered him fair money at $13.5M per, and he spat at it. Get in there and sign that damn tag, so we can all see how many teams are willing to pay him what he’s worth
Another Jaded Fin Fan!

So the Seahawks get a fifth-round pick and WR Marcus Johnson, and the Eagles get DE Michael Bennett and a seventh-round pick.
I’m still sticking with my plan. Gut it. Seahawks had one of the baddest defenses around and they’re gutting it this year because they realize it’s time to move on from some guys.
Who says you can’t let people go you have on your team and improve?
Bulletin…bulletin….bulletin….
Fuck Jarvis Landry
That is all, carry on.
LOL @ MikeE
🙂 Not sure why, but I’m getting angry with Landry. Either he’s getting bad advice from his agent, or he’s so full of himself, he can’t properly gauge his actual market value, or a combination of both.
Interesting!
https://247sports.com/nfl/denver-broncos/Bolt/Report-Broncos-prefer-to-acquire-Dolphins-OT-JaWuan-James-115936402
Still in there is “Denver would need to surrender draft capital and/or players to acquire him.” Almost makes you wonder if someone in the Broncos FO is putting out “don’t sign that cheaper contract….you have place that wants you.”
“There are a number of teams interested in Landry, but perhaps not at his price. Landry is said to want at least $14 million annually, but at least one team that is in the running believes his value is more like $10 million per year.”
http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/nfl/miami-dolphins/article203916359.html
who gives a shit. Go full balls to the wall for Robinson and Matthews and be done with it. fuck these guys. Parker is a panty waste so trade his ass and get him the hell out of Miami and let that ingrate Landry get his penalties on some other team.
profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2018/03/07/rams-trade-alec-ogletree-to-giants-for-draft-picks/
here ya go. another one. First, they trade Quinn to us and now Ogletree to the Giants. But, nah, we need to hang on to everyone we’ve got because we’ve got some secret Super Bowl run we’re going to surprise everyone with. Fargin Bullshit
Who is it that we’re hanging on to?
Wake, Pouncey to name two

Full terms of #Rams trade of Alec Olgetree to the #Giants: A 4th and 6th going to LA, who are sending a 7th next year back.
It seems there are a lot more player trades in recent years. Players for players and picks and swaps etc.
Congrats on your thundersnow Mike E.
We get a couple of them every year and I think they are cool too. Except you know its gonna be a wet heavy shovel…..
So what kind of snow are you northeasters getting? It’s coming down pretty good and wet here but not actually a lot of snow even though it looks like a winter wonderland.
Nice write up Mike E
Yes Mike good write up. I read recently that Swanson denies having that second concussion stating it was a reaction to medication.
What the hell is he taking that would cause concussion like symptoms as a side effect?
Sounds like BS
Just hand thunder snow. Weeeeeee
Just shoveled what felt like 10,000 lbs of slush. Damn that sucked. Also, a huge tree is down in our back yard, I’m glad it didn’t reach the house. Scary shit!
How much snow did you get? We don’t have a lot of snow in inches, maybe 4 or so but it’s so wet and sticky it’s clinging to everything and looks like a lot. I don’t feel like going out there because it blowing all around, it’s wet and chilly. Just not feeling it.
Good luck with the tree.
No more than 3″, but we definitely got another 1″ or so by the time I finished. I was soaked, because it’s like that slushy snow coming down, very wet. It was really heavy to shovel, I’m beat
Tim – Would you take that chance on Swanson, and sign him to a multi year contract?
No draft Ragnow or Price but I am not Tim.
I don’t really know enough about him. My guess the interest is from the coaches that were with the Lions.
I hear that. I don’t know, Cameron left with a bad feeling about taking players with multiple concussions, especially on a player who really doesn’t seem like a very good player to start. There have to be better options, including what Ken just mentioned.
Swanson actually refuted the Lions concussion diagnosis last year
In this article, it states that we’d prefer to address the interior OL in the draft. Sounds like we could target a vet TE though.
My wife has to go shovel snow. I have a medical restriction so I am staying in the warm home
Lmao.
I get the “I would have shoveled if you just waited” routine…..
I read this earlier and though I don’t know what the plan is I’m not sure it means anyone is out. We use a rotation. The Dolphins have been wanting to cut down Wake’s snaps for a couple of years now but injuries and other reasons prevented it. We may see Wake play only on passing downs now to maximize his performance at his age.
We even saw Wake, Harris, Fede and Malveaux all play down the stretch and that’s 4 DEs.
Kinda owe you a beer on this…lol
Wake is just a pass rush specialist at this point…imo. He is not going to see as many snaps this year and rightfully so. He is invisible far too much anymore.
Btw….didn’t read the article. Lol
LOL, people always feel addition means subtraction but not when it comes to pass rushers. We may use 4 DEs on a rush if the situation warrants it – like we’re up by a few scores and it’s 3rd and 17.
Damn Mondo…..
Stop being so logical.
Perhaps they do have a plan? IDK SMH IWICB
I’ll take my plan. Unless the team thinks it has some secret it’s keeping where it see’s some kind of magical Super Bowl run, which isn’t happening, I would do the deed and get rid of the bad contracts and the waste of space that Parker is and go young at the DE position by trading Parker and Wake for Smoot and Phillips.
If we presented that scenario to the Jags with them losing Robinson and with them being gassed vs NE and not able to get to the qb I don’t see them turning down the opportunity to get a outside wr and a pass rusher who could help them get over the top and we get two young guys who could help us out.
Smoot was a 3rd and Phillips was undrafted so I don’t see the Jags asking for any other consideration.
With Harris, Branch and Quinn we’ve got a good set of guys to start and Smoot would be a guy who can develop into the position and Phillips can play LB and rush the passer.
There is no reason to hang on to Wake.
Yeah, it’s a hypothetical and they’re probably not considering doing this but they SHOULD.
Other teams are making moves and we’re hanging onto guys for no reason. Wake may help us win a few extra games this year but he’s not the future at DE. His time has come to an end and it’s time for the team to start considering how they’re going to address it.
Well… between Armando’s write and Barry’s write, one thing is clear: MIAMI, WE HAVE A (CAP) PROBLEM.
If we end up cutting or trading MR. WAKE, I’m going to be FURIOUS with our FO. 😡
And that Suh is even being discussed as a possible cap casualty tells me all I need to know about Tannenbaum, SMH
Why would you be furious? You see, this is why we can’t compete. We hang onto these guys forever out of some kind of emotional attachment. And as far as Suh is concerned, we need pieces. We need more players who can make an impact and, face it. the Suh contract is a bad contract and we need to get rid of it and we can’t just keep restructuring it and staying in cap hell.
It’s time to admit we need to do something and just do it and stop screwing around thinking we’re going to make some kind of a run at the super bowl this year because it’s not going to happen.
If we keep Wake around it’s just prolonging the inevitable anyway. Sooner or later we’re going to need to make these choices and we’re going to be looking at the rebuild so get it done now and move the fugg on instead of wanting to just win 9 games a year just for some kind of feel good mentality that we’re “close” when we’re not.
ER and Tim,
Yes, y’all… I think we all agree that Wake will be used strictly as a pass-rushing specialist from here on out. It’s best for the team in stopping the run on early downs, and it’s best for Wake in keeping him ferociously fresh to do HIS thang… BEAST!
And that Suh is even being discussed as a possible cap casualty tells me all I need to know about Tannenbaum, SMH
Suh IS the Casualty Cap not a cap casualty.
Interesting way of phrasing it… and it makes total sense, too!
I don’t see us purging our DL in fact I think it might be complete. Unless we bring Fede back but Malveaux might be his replacement already in-house. We have 4 DTs and 5 DEs.
LOTTA $$$ there on our D-Line… lotta $$$…
That’s usually the case when you have good ones. We also have 5 guys on various rookie contracts.
Prof Lou,
Where I come from (not a physical place, LOL), one HONORS their tried and true. IMO, so long as Wake has gas left in his tank, we PLAY him as one of ours… we don’t trade or cut him. The man has earned legendary status (at least in MY book) for everything he’s done for us.
We ask him to restructure, he restructures. We ask him to take a pay cut, he takes a pay cut. He’s a consummate PROFESSIONAL, both on and off the field. He eats, sleeps, and breathes for this franchise. He’s probably in better shape right now than I was when I was in college (which is SAYING something).
We will probably approach MR. WAKE very soon regarding either another restructure or pay cut, and he’ll probably say YES… he’s that type of man: TEAM FIRST.
Ya don’t cut or trade players such as Wake, especially after he posted double-digit sacks for us last season. What’s more, how much can we actually get in a trade for a 36 year-old? It’s not even worth exploring.
I’m with you on Wake. He’s earned his status with the team. He also had a good season last year. You move on from him when his game shows the drop off. He is a bit of a freak so who knows when that will be.
You don’t do Mr. Wake dirty. I don’t care if this is a business, they are still men with loyalty and the franchise should honor such.
well, I guess we’ll just be stuck in the land of mediocrity forever with this type of thinking. teams make moves to help themselves out all the time and Wake is a here and now player. he maybe helps you win and extra game or two right now but then you take a hit for the future because you don’t do anything to get better and keep it going. you play for the year and then address the next year and the year after that and the year after that when you get there and try to win 9 games for a feel good moment but never really get anywhere.
SMH
85th!!!
Seriously… if we had 52 more MR. WAKE’s on our team (positive attitude, extreme work ethic, team-first), we’d go UNDEFEATED.
Harris is just like him. Even though Harris was a 1st rd pick and Wake had the long road as a UDFA, Wake showed how hard work pays off when you have talent but don’t have it all put together yet. I truly believe Harris is going to be a very good pass rusher.
but that’s the point, we don’t and you don’t win with just one player. you win with a team. just like we signed Suh to that stupid ass contract and he wasn’t going to make that much of a difference just by himself. it you have solid guys at positions you don’t need a Suh on your defensive line and, like it or not, he’s a waste of money.
now people can argue about that and say he’s not because of the way he plays but other teams don’t have him and have a better defense than we do. so, maybe, just maybe if we had the money to spend elsewhere and upgrade other positions we would have a better team overall instead of jerking off to the fact that we can say we have Suh and other teams don’t even if the team is pathetic.
As far as Wake is concerned I think he understands it’s a business and if we were to trade him to a team that has no chance of winning then that’s a different story altogether but it we trade him to a contender like the Jags who have a really good D already and he’s got his chance to do what he does there and give him a chance to possibly get a ring before he retires we’ve done more for him than asking him to take a pay cut or restructure.
It’s all about the emotional attachment. We can’t let go of Cam Wake because he’s ours and he’s one of our greatest players we’ve ever had and he’s still playing well for us. It’s time to let go.
Lou – Do you think Wake makes too much money for the production he gives you? I don’t think so at all, and that’s really all that matters. Suh is another story. Despite how good he is, he just can’t do enough to be worth his salary. He’s great, but his salary is off the charts. He’d have to be hands down the best DT, and he’s not. He’s top 3-5, but not the best.
Lou, people have different views on things and the team and what we look to be doing, or might do and so on. It’s not always about how you view it. You seem to have created your own personal bubble and nothing else is allowed get inside. Kind of hard to have conversations when that’s the case.
The team really hasn’t done much yet other than the Quinn trade which I like, but people are going off already on any worse case scenario they can think of. Let it play out and react as opposed to everyone shooting down every f’n thing they do or might do. The bottom line will be the 53 man roster and how they perform. Not anyone’s opinions specifically those of us who have nothing to do with any of it except rooting for the team to do well. 🙂
Whatever
Tim,
I know the team isn’t going to do what I would. God knows they would never do anything that would help them to get better and have a chance to compete consistently.
And, I understand that it’s all opinions but my opinion isn’t any less valid than anyone’s opinion on here and even if someone’s opinion on here is in line with what the team actually does it doesn’t mean they or the team was correct because the proof is in the pudding.
You say the same thing every year. Let’s sit and wait and see what they do and see the results before we say anything and every year it’s the same situation. But, you’ll keep defending the mediocrity year after year.
Forget it. You guys with your emotional attachments to players like Tannehill, Landry, Wake and others are impossible to talk to. We’ll just win our 8 or 9 games a year and be happy with it.
Did I, or did I not, TELL Y’ALL that Gesicki was going to KILL THE COMBINE?!! 🙂
I’ve never made such a BOLD prediction regarding a Combine player, so please take no offense as a gloat just little bit… 😀 😉
so the Seahawks can cut a player like Sherman who’s only 29 coming off an injury but the Phins have to keep a 30 yr old mediocre qb coming off a significant knee injury. that’s rich.
No fun being a sports fan, you gotta be angry and disagree with everything and dislike your team more than you like them. What’s the fun in that?
I’ve often wondered what it would be like if the Dolphins did win it all, what my reaction would be. Wow we won, yeah… be all happy and celebrate that day and for a few after that. Then what? Can you accept anything less afterwards or do you give a mulligan and say hey we won it last year if the team struggles the following year? Or what about being in the playoff mix for a stretch of years but never winning it all. Would that not be fun to have a chance multiple times or would not having the ultimate goal not be good enough?
It’s a crazy thing we’re all drawn to. The reason is we have zero control over any of it. Unless you want to pay for planes to fly over the team facility with banners that state your frustrations. LOL
you’re missing the point big time. we come here to discuss the team and share opinions. I don’t think any of us here are naïve enough to think we have any control over what the team does or doesn’t do. we’re all just throwing our stuff out there for others to see and discuss each other’s opinions.
you’re the one who seems to take it to another level all the time and make it sound like it’s something more than it is. I’m just posting my opinion. That’s all I’m doing. Read it. Don’t read it. If you like it, fine. If you don’t like it, fine. But don’t try and make it into something it’s not.
That’s not how you come across. You’re a my way or everything is the wrong way type of guy. You think I’m the only one who sees this? LOL
You also contradict yourself all the time. Just a few days ago you had to reply to me in disagreement saying 4 QBs aren’t going before us, maybe 2. Then moments later you posted your ProLou Mock 1.0 having 4 QBs going before us.
You also say I wouldn’t go QB 1st rd because that won’t help us win now. Then say, it’s time to move on from Tannehill and draft the new QB even if we don’t win right away.
What kind of crap is that? It’s one thing to point out different ways of doing stuff, but to say it in a way each time that this is the definitive way of doing it and is the only way even after saying the opposite only hours earlier is kind of fucked up.
That’s why you get called a troll by some here even though I do not refer to you as such. I think you’re bi-polar. LOL
if there’s anyone here taking this stuff too seriously it’s you. it’s just an opinion Tim. come off the ledge.
Prof Lou,
For me, it’s not about an emotional attachment to MR. WAKE (okay, yes it is, LOL). Dude, he put up DOUBLE-DIGIT SACKS AGAIN for us last season. Ya don’t do Wake dirty (as ER stated above) for all he’s done for us.
Again… what would be the return on a 36-year old player? Maybe a conditional 6th rounder? I’d be willing to bet that Wake posts double-digit sacks again in ’18… especially coming fresh off the edge as a situational pass-rusher.
so asking him to take a pay cut for the team isn’t doing him dirty?
If he agrees to as much, that’s on HIM.
you’re right. If he agrees, it would be on him. but how are you doing him dirty by trading him to a team that’s a contender and giving him a chance to get a ring before he retires? that’s not doing him dirty.
when you’re saying “ya don’t do Wake dirty” it’s ALL about the emotional attachment.

————
I’d rather get a ring with MY FOLKS, as opposed to being shipped off to another team and getting a ring with OTHER FOLKS.
Cam is old-school, man. THAT’S why he’s so LOVED!
yeah, but he’s got NO chance to get a ring with “his folks” so you send him to a team that’s got that chance and you get something in return for him at a position of need. it’s a win win for him and the team.
And, what I’m saying is they’ve got to make moves to get under the cap by the 14th and now matter how you look at it, when you’ve got a guy who’s his age, teams look to start moving on and getting younger at the position.
The acquisition of Quinn points in that direction. So, there’s a strong possibility Wake won’t be here this season. So Phins fans may need to get used to that. That’s why I’m discussing this. A lot of money on the d-line and while I would like the team to get rid of Suh’s contract, I doubt they’re going in that direction. Most likely a restructure there.
Branch is younger and can give them more years. Harris is in his 2nd year. Quinn is younger and is probably being looked at as a guy who’ll be signed for four years. So, Wake is probably the odd man out at DE.
Maybe they shopped Wake and nobody offered anything worth losing him for? Fact is nobody knows what Phins have or haven’t been doing besides them.
But bash away…..
And…..
Being attached to players on your favorite team is what being a fan is all about. This isn’t robot league.
Yeah it’s no longer he was a Bear or a Viking or a Chief forever. Great players we enjoyed even if we weren’t a fan of that team. Now it’s just move on and keep turning everything over. I hate it. I think the NFL has to revisit what they are. Are you mainly entertainment now or still a competitive sport as well?
TOO right!
+1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
It’s a win-now, instant gratification league Tim. That means players come and go in free agency all the time. Teams are trying to win now by adding talent that gives them the best chance of doing so. There is no more building a team and there is no more players playing for the same team for 15 years because they sign their 2nd contract and then when the team has the opportunity to move on they do so.
that’s the way it is.
I root for players when they’re here. When they’re gone, they’re gone but I also have favorite players I like to watch on other teams.
I root for the team to win first and foremost. I’m a fan of certain players but the team comes first.
Lou, just pointing out what I see. I like our conversations when you at least stay on point. Coming from the opposite direction within a short period of time is strange. That’s all. As we spew our opinions here we get known for character traits. Like I hate Landry and I’m a Tanny homer. Neither true but it’s all in good fun. That’s a stereotype based on what I’ve said about them. But I did make points that verifies those comments even in a joking mode.
So let me ask you this if I may be so bold… what would your approach right now be with the cap and roster where it is with Landry and Quinn still in flux until official? What are you looking to do as a GM? We’re going to notarize this one. LOL
I’d cut Landry, let him sign with someone else, trade for him, trade Quinn to the Browns and extend Jesse Davis.
Honestly, I take the tag off Landry and bite the bullet. Unless there’s a definite possibility of a trade taking place just do it to clear his tag off the books. Jarvis is good but I don’t see him as a 9td a yr player on any offense. So, I have to replace 4 to 5 td’s and I don’t care about the number of catches because scoring wins games.
Then cut Timmons and Thomas and those three moves put us well over the cap. The only thing is whether Landry is traded or the tag rescinded but if he’s not traded by sometime late Saturday or early Sunday I’m pulling the tag so he’s added to the FA wr mix and that gives us a shot at Robinson during the legal tampering period.
If DEN comes thru with a trade for James then that clears him off but if that doesn’t happen I’m declining the option to clear his number and freeing up more space. My biggest issues would remain with what to do with Tannehill, Suh and Pouncey.
It sounds like we’re watching how Denver handles C.J. Anderson. Gase likes him a lot as a 3 down back. I think he would love to pair him with Drake. Williams as the #3/STs would be ideal. Will another team view Williams as a #2?
never know. if DEN really likes James and would rather trade for him than letting him hit FA then Anderson could be part of that trade. But, his salary could turn them off too.
If there is mutual interest with both teams and players they can work it out. I really believe Gase wants to run the ball often and well. Also involve the RBs more in the passing game. Taking DE and RB out of the early draft picture let’s us focus on OL, TE, QB and LB.
well, DEN supposedly wants to trade for James rather than let him hit free agency and we wanted Anderson last yr. I don’t know if things changed since last yr. I think there was talk we’d be interested if DEN cut him. Thing is, if DEN cuts him we probably get him for less than $4.5M. We could always restructure him once he’s on the team.
This is just a hunch, but I think Gase wants to use TEs and RBs for short and intermediate to move the chains, then take some shots down the field with the WRs and even the TEs and RBs.
People ask how do you replace Landry? Well we won’t with one guy, it will be a schematic change. Drake had 32 catches in limited playing time in 2017, 6 starts and maybe 2-3 other games. He could have 60 in 2018. A new TE could have 40-50. There you go!
that’s the whole thing. it’s not about replacing his catches with one guy. you wouldn’t want to anyway. you want to have an offense that utilizes ALL the talent you’ve got available because that is what gives you the best chance of winning. when you see a qb going to 7 different targets during a game the offense is usually doing a pretty good job of moving the ball
and if they have a consistent running game, doesn’t mean they need to run a lot every game, it will go a long way to help the offense. with the defense having to worry about running the ball you’ve got more options throwing the ball.
Here’s why I would trade Landry to the Bears if they are interested to move up to #8 and maybe a 5th. We get into Nelson, Fitzpatrick, Edmunds, Smith and maybe QB range. At #11 maybe one is available.
Wake got treated right by the Dolphins when they made him a multi millionaire. Isn’t that “doing him right” enough? I think he’ll be alright. Lol
So do we want Martellus Bennett at TE?
NO!
No Bennetts.
Do you think Gase (and our FO) is trying to do it like Bellicheck does it?
Do you think they should try to follow that pattern?
Patsy Way or not, what IS the right pattern?
Is it the Philly Way now?
OK then, how exactly did THEY do it?
Or, generically, what is the right way to build a team?
… the right way to have perennial playoff teams?
The Patriots really do things very differently. They find players that fit their system, guys that aren’t necessarily superstars in college, but meet certain criteria like quickness, and short burst speed, and they also very carefully choose high character players in the draft. Then they supplement that roster through free agency and bring in some of the less desirable players but ask them to do things the Patriot way, and they either get it, and stay, or don’t and they’re gone. It’s pretty unique. I’m not sure we have any such criteria or plan in place here.
The James thing is tough, O-line has been a problem unit for way to long, so many resources and now were looking at another first round pick walking away ?
If we trade him, it’s not walking away, but I get your point. I would keep James, but I guess they aren’t convinced they can count on him
The Patriot way is very simple, but people are unwilling to do it because of ego or just plain on industry groupthink. It’s the same in any industry that you work in. People have a certain way they think they’re supposed to do something and if they fail they can just go somewhere else with the same groupthink. That’s why coaches continually get recycled. The Pats target players with certain skillsets and work ethics and then ask them to execute on any given play. They have full use of the game day roster on any given week.
Most teams just look at trying to get the ball to their best players and let them do their thing, which is fine when it’s working, but all you have to do is shutdown those certain players. The Pats say, okay, you can shutdown these guys, but we’re going to kill you with these guys instead. Our team doesn’t do that consistently, like most teams in the NFL. Every coach has an ego and wants to win their specific way instead of being flexible. Gase knows these concepts because he’s verbalized them since the day he came here, but for some reason he refuses to put them into action for the most part, even though he’s been very successful with them when he does.
talent is spread evenly thru out the NFL, the only difference between winning and losing is that 6 inch space between the ears of the guys calling the shots.
The Pats win by first execution, they demand perfect execution from each player. they take away your strengths and make you beat them with your weaknesses.
they play high percentage plays on offense, for example, just like in short 3rd down Brady sneaks every time, I’ve yet to see anyone stop that play. it’s high percentage that’s why they do it. we’ve always had low percentage plays on third and short that’s why we suck at it.
the little short crossing patterns with these little short quick guys move the chains.
they are also very innovative, remember the Ravens playoff game where they left the tackle uncovered which made him eligible? that Tackle went out for a pass uncovered, They had Harbaugh jumping up and down on the sidelines!
I think those plays they run that you call high percentage are only high percentage because all 11 guys on the field know what they’re supposed to do, and execute it. They’re so well coached and disciplined.
BLL – Comparing Sherman to Tannehill is not valid. Sherman is CB coming off of two ruptured Achilles. He needs to be able to run, jump, and cut; it is questionable if he will be able to do those things at his former level. Tannehill is a QB coming off of a torn ACL. He needs to be able to throw the ball and scramble a little. His ACL isn’t going to impact that skill set.
He ruptured both?
That’s what I just read. I’ll see if I can find that, because I thought it was just one.
I read he was playing on an Achilles injury during the season and then it ruptured.
I do think Gase is revamping the offense. Need to upgrade the TE position to do it though.
We need to use the people we have better and consistently. When we do they perform, so use them more.
O Rob,
I can’t tell if you’re agreeing with my point or disagreeing because you pretty much just rewrote what I said. Lol
AUGH>>>>>PLAGERERER!!!!
Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter 6m6 minutes ago
Dolphins WR Jarvis Landry signed his franchise tender this morning, per source.
Good, now I can stop hating on him. He just needed to do the right thing for both sides.
Lou – He had surgery on both. Ruptured the right and had clean up on the left.

Browns, Ravens are among the teams who have interest in Landry, I’m told, but as @flasportsbuzz reported, nothing imminent. Trade can happen now that he has signed.
Browns will need a reliable receiver for whatever new QB they get (McCarron).
They also have the draft picks and cap to do it.
If they trade him to the Browns, it will be interesting to see if they try to move down or accumulate picks. Or get picks then move down.
I don’t see them moving to R1P4 – That would cost Landry, R1P11 and next years R1 pick at the very least.
We could also accept a deal with one of the Browns 2nd rd picks and maybe a mid rd pick. I’m not sure we’ll get a 1st.
No, I don’t think they get a first. 2nd , maybe..
Maybe we’ll trade Landry and another player to move up. I think anything is in play
Yeah there are many trade options.
Suh, Landry, RiP11 for R1P4 and R3P1
There ya go, something like that
Maybe Landry, Suh and Allison, captain and 4 YR veteran of the Cheerleaders for R1P4.
We should keep and clone Allison.
If she gets us R1P4, I’d have to let her go Phelon, I just would.
We could trade Landry to Philly for Ajayi.
Straight to the SB if we do that!
QUIT TRADING SUH
So you’re on board with the cheerleader though?
No. Especially an Allison that’s my daughters name.
HATERS GOTTA HATE!
11: R1P11 LB ROQUAN SMITH, GEORGIA
42: R2P10 C BILLY PRICE, OHIO STATE
73: R3P9 TE HAYDEN HURST, SOUTH CAROLINA
130: R4P30 RB JOHN KELLY, TENNESSEE
198: R6P24 S TRAYVON HENDERSON, HAWAII
223: R7P5 P MICHAEL DICKSON, TEXAS
229: R7P11 K DANIEL CARLSON, AUBURN
Dunno about Price in the 2nd. He is injured and pec tears tend to be tricky and often reoccurring.
Suh is arguably the best player on Miami’s defense (you could argue Jones), but he is also the biggest money hit on the team. The question is whether his cost is worth his value to the team and can they replace his production. I think if you could get value for him and unload his contract, you should. He’s not getting any younger and he can be replaced. His replacement might not be quite as good, but DT is not a game changing position.
Top DTs are the highest paid position after QB. Wait until you see what Aaron Donald gets paid.
I think DE is usually more
On average yes, but when a top DT gets a new deal it’s usually really high. Also not necessarily DE but pass rushers counting OLBs are at the top as well.
182nd!
181st!!!
That was weird…
I’m not trading our best players to move up in the draft
Wtf guys
Come on?!?!?
LOL
Tim – We set the market pretty high with Suh. Donald may get more, or he might not, but he’s the best in the league. You’re right, pass rushers get the most, but yes, DT are basically the same, especially the top 5
DT might get paid a lot, but it is still not a game changing position.
I agree
Until you don’t have good ones.
Which positions do you think are game changing positions not counting QB?
WR, DB.
RB, LB to a lesser degree.
https://twitter.com/allbrightnfl/status/971828735203856384?s=21
Wtf!
Now I know why M13 told me this dude is a troll. LOL
I like Albright
But that’s quite a list of yuks
Maybe it wasn’t him but I don’t know where he came up with these comparisons. For instance Jackson is known to struggle throwing on the move and Tannehill excels in doing that.
We should pick up Mayfield when he turns 30! lol
Billy Price could fall to the mid rounds due to his injury.
Great Tim…..
You just said RT17 excels in something…..here we go.
In 3…..2……1…..
LOL!!
I know it’s not allowed but I’m not afraid. 🙂
Tim – RT17 won’t be throwing on the run anymore after shredding his knee 3 times
I forgot he’s still on crutches and rides a rascal around the facility.
Dr. Andrews said it was barely recognizable as a knee
I thought is was up to 6 now
math it’s a bitch!
“We can rebuild him…better than he was before”
It’s all relative with the DT’s. Our defense has been better w/o Suh, so bringing him here hasn’t changed that. Maybe we had better players when we had our run of the mill DT’s, but it’s hard to have great players around your DT when he’s making over $20M, or this year over $25M
All I know is if you don’t have good play from your DTs, you’re not going to have a good overall defense.
With that said, Suh’s contract is a problem.
That’s why they go high in the draft too.
Yep, that is why I list DT along with DE, DB, OL, and franchise QB as priority positions in the 1st round. Unless it’s someone really really special, the other positions can wait till day 2.
Jonathan Martin had a loaded shotgun, knife and ax when he was taken into custody. Yikes!
Can’t trade Suh anyways without taking $22M dead cap hit.
Although it would save $4M this year.
rgs – If you don’t have good play from any part of your defense you’re not going to have a good overall defense, whether it’s DT’s, DE’s, LB’s, CB’s or S’s. They all count.
Plus, no one said we wouldn’t have good DT play without Suh.
Where did I imply that someone said that? …nowhere.
He means gotta be strong in the trenches.
I agree, but there are 31 teams that don’t have Suh, and a whole bunch of them went to the playoffs, and 2 of them to the SB, and neither one had him.
I understand but many of the playoff teams were strong up front and at DT.
Which still makes my statement 100% correct.
Tim is allowed to say good things about Tannehill. He is a clueless homer. 😉
uh oh, did someone dis Suh? here we go 3….2….1….
What a fucking bunch of ass clowns running this franchise. Can’t put it any other way. Good luck this season.
What did they do today?
Nothing, Lou just woke up from a nap in his barcalounger and he’s cranky
That’s why I think the team has to try to win in the next couple of years or Suh was a waste of time. So they’re going to ride this out whether it works or not. Let’s hope for the best.
It all starts in the trenches. …both sides.
Just for kicks, say we cut Suh, and added Dontari Poe for $8M per season, would we really be so much worse on defense. That’s kind of what I’m trying to say. It’s not that I undervalue the position, our team just overvalued 1 player.
No we wouldn’t be so much worse. Although Suh is a great player the timing of us signing him didn’t really add up. We weren’t ready to win in 2015 and we’re still incomplete in some areas. The only hope we have is it comes together this year or next and it all paid off.
Tim, I was wondering the same thing, but figured I would calk it up to Lou missing is meds today and let it pass.
Suh should be gone next year. His cap hit in dead money is $13 Million next year but the savings is $15M. His total Cap number next year is a fucking disgusting 28M. We can trade him for a 4th round pick next year and save $15M.
I don’t give a crap who the players are, we just need to play better up front. …even more so on the offensive side.
Is this why Lou is mad? He didn’t get the job?
we can save NINE PERCENT of the total cap by cutting Suh next year. (he is on the books for almost 17% of our cap next year…..FOR ONE PLAYER!
The only way to overcome this is for the recent draft classes to step up and make more of an impact.
Without power again. Hell of a storm last night. I had a significant medical appointment that I could not miss this morning. My neighbor got up at 5 a.m. to snow blow my driveway. The town didn’t plow our street last night so when I was on my way to my appointment he got out and snow blowed a path up the street for me. I can’t thank him enough
That’s really cool. Good neighbor.
Damn, that’s one really good dude right there
That’s really cool, Ken. Hope you’re on the mend?
Guice is gay?
Don’t know but besides being asked if he was gay at the combine, they also asked if his mother is a prostitute?
And I don’t think it was Jeff Ireland either
Is that what they mean when they say ” He’s a Baller ” ?
Yes
He likes to run it up the middle
Ok
Ran out of Fluff and onto plan B?
