2018 Miami Dolphins – Free Agency – C’s

This is the last look at free agent offensive linemen.  We’ve already covered the tackles and the guards, and now it’s time to look at the centers.  This may be an exercise in futility, i get that, but there is always the possibility that we actually move on from C Mike Pouncey, whether it’s due to injury, salary, or a combination of both.  So many fans are freaking out because we’re over the cap by $19M, and Mike Pouncey counts $9M against the cap, but this year his dead cap hit is only $2M, so releasing Pouncey for financial reasons is feasible.  Can we replace him?  I’m here to take a look at whether we can.

Ryan Jensen  6’3 310  26YO

11_JensenStory_news

Jensen started all 16 games last season for the Baltimore Ravens.  He was drafted by the ravens in the 6th RD of the 2013 draft.  He played some at LG and RG before finally becoming the Ravens center last season.  He didn’t participate at the combine, but just to compare since the combine is all the rage right now, at his Colorado pro day, Jensen ran a 5.28 40, an 8’2′ broad jump, 25 1/2″ vertical, and put up 30 reps of 225lbs.  Once again, I invoke the sentiment that if he can play for the Ravens, he can play for us.  Spotrac projects Jensen to be worth around $9M per, so we would have to make his 1st year contract a cap friendly one, which isn’t difficult when you’re doing a long term deal.

**********************************************************************************

Weston Richburg  6’3 298  26YO

Philadelphia Eagles v New York Giants

Weston Richburg was drafted in the 2nd RD by the Giants in the 2014 NFL draft.  He started 47 of 48 games his first 3 seasons with the Giants.  In 2017, Westburg suffered a concussion on Oct 1,  (Game 4) and his slow recovery forced the Giants to put him on IR, ending his season.  Richburg was a solid, if unspectacular starter for the Giants.  The fact that they IRed him in his money year showed they didn’t really have any intention of re-signing him.  He’s a young, average to above average NFL center.  Missing 12 games in his final year before FA will hurt him salary wise, but how much, I don’t know.

***********************************************************************************

Russell Bodine  6’3 310  25YO

613744004.0

Now here’s a guy we should be interested in.  Only 25 years old, he has started every single game in his 4 years in the NFL with the Bengals.  His combine numbers were pretty impressive.  5.18 40, 42 reps of 225lbs, 29; vertical (both his bench press and vertical were tops).  Bodine is a powerful guy who moves people and plays with a mean streak.  He sounds like a perfect candidate here, but I have no idea what kind of salary he will be looking for.

************************************************************************************

Brian Schwenke 6’3 314  27YO

schwenke600-080115

I remember watching Schwenke in the Senior Bowl back in 2013 and being impressed by the kid.  Stout powerful, with a chip on his shoulder, he did really in the drills, especially the mano a mano drills.  He was drafted in the 4th RD in ’13 by the Titans, but his career never really took off there, starting only 30 games over 5 years.  If you go by his combine numbers, he matches up pretty well, running a 4.99 40, putting up 31 reps, running a 7’31 cone drill, but all that hasn’t translated into NFL success.  He would be an inexpensive pickup, but to expect him to play up to even an injured 80% Mike Pouncey level of play would be unlikely.

**************************************************************************************

Travis Swanson  6’5 312  27YO

453440734.0

So we want to replace one puff pastry with another?  Travis Swanson seems to me like Mike Pouncey light (very light!).  Just about the same size as Pouncey, Swanson is a finesse player, but was also a 2 time captain at Arkansas.  Swanson has 42 starts over 4 years for the Detroit Lions, last year starting and playing in only 11 games.  He was put on IR for the 2nd time in 2 years due to concussion issues.  It’s been heavily rumored we have interest in Swanson, but I don’t get it.  Didn’t we learn from Jordan Cameron?  Should we replace our C with gossamer hips for a C with scattered grey matter?  I’ll take a pass on that one, thank you! LOL – Is it me, or does Swanson even look like he’s trying to figure out what it is he’s doing on the field?

***********************************************************************************

So this completes the O-line folks.  If you have any suggestions of guys I may have missed, feel free to mention them on the blog.

  2. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Phins were over the cap in 2016 too…how’d that season work out?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It always works out because it has to. The only downfall is you can’t sign many players in FA but maybe that’s a good thing. LOL

Seriously though, a lot of our cap is where it is because we did a lot of re-signing our own the last couple of years. Maybe the plan is to focus more on the young players we have and the next draft class.

  3. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We shouldn’t be overspending in FA anyway, so as far as I’m concerned, the less we spend in FA the better!

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Isn’t that what most of us want? Draft well and keep our own? Wait….except Landry?!

      • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

        Right, except Landry

How convenient we don’t hear them preaching that line this year.

It’s gonna be a regrettable fuckup, stupid really

Don’t over think it Douffus Brigade

  4. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Thanks for that info Wyo! That illustrates one of our problems. Signing big FA contracts bites you in the ass when you want to keep your own guys. Not that you should overpay your own guys either, but you don’t want the picks you get right to walk every time either. Vernon wasn’t happening, the G-men gave him a ridiculous contract, but Miller’s wasn’t, though I didn’t feel a pressing need to keep him either. Landry just wants too much, but if he comes back down to earth at around $13M or less, we should sign him.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think Miller wanted to go to Houston. Nobody talks about that just that we let him walk. His agent and he targeted Houston for over a year preparing for FA. You lose some FAs sometimes.

We want Tannehill over Landry. Have fun with that.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

No, Tannehill is under contract, Landry is a FA. We offered him $13.5M for 4 years. If you think he deserves more, have fun with that!

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I never said they were so smart, but paying more than what we offered Landry is crazy. I’d be shocked if any team pays him more than we offered

  7. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Sonny – So what do you propose? Paying him the $16M? Offering him more than $13.5M per?

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

He wants “whatever his name is'” contract in Green Bay.
      Give it to him
Give him his seven catches a game
Give him a team as willing as him

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Adams is overpaid, so we have to overpay also? Maybe he should take Julian Edelman’s contract instead

  8. They offered Landry $13m and he refused. He countered with $14m and they refused. But they outsmarted him by signing him for $16m. Ass clowns

  9. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Whatever we do on offense we have to fix the OL or it’s going to be more of the ugh… I don’t care who it is, they have to play better. Have to add more of a threat at TE.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Could be a technicality like when everyone knows a guy signed with a team but it’s “not official”. That would be a really bad report to put out from multiple sources if he did not sign it.

Lots of tension on this blog lately, everyone is angry

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Lots of tension with our Phins lately. I, for one, can’t remember ever being over the cap (and by a LOT!) with FA only days away. Add to that, all of the trade rumors and cut rumors that are circling around our star players.

But yes, I’m with ya on lots of tension on this blog lately!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s what happens after having a playoff season followed by a shit one. At the same time a new HC retooling his team in his vision. We don’t know what’s up or if we’re on the right path. Some don’t think we are so they’re not optimistic. I’m waiting to see how the entire offseason plays out. You get to hone in on the potential 53.

  12. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s kind of funny, because we haven’t even fucked up the draft yet. 🙂

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We traded for Quinn and franchised Landry like everyone thought we would weeks ago. It’s like we’re trying to stir up more anger about things that haven’t happened. LOL

  13. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Landry is worth whatever you pay him
    Tannehill ain’t

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

I say that with no zero nada anger

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

There will/should be another QB brought in. Whether they can unseat him instantly or need a year, who knows.

RT17 makes average QB money and that’s where he’s at. They can move on 2019…

I look at what Glennon got last year and feel RT17 is a bargain

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Tannehill has nothing to do with Landry except for most of his “historic” production since he’s been in the league. 😉

Their contracts are not at odds though, Landry being re-signed or not has nothing to do with what Tannehill makes.

  14. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Piggy’s next jersey already has man goo on it

  15. Someone offers Landry a 4 or 5 yr deal that pays him 8 to 10mil a year he ain’t going to take that even if it is a long term deal because Landry feels he’s the best wr in the league and should be paid like one. So, he’s playing this year for the $16M.

  16. Or, if the phins do trade him they’re going to end up trading him with a pick in order to get rid of him just like the Texans did giving up Osweiler and a 2nd to the Browns to get the Browns to take the contract off their hands.

Granted Landry’s tag isn’t near what Osweiler was getting but it’s $16M the team can’t afford to have on the books.

  17. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

  18. Rams are another team making the moves to make their team better. Meanwhile in Miami it’s Tannenbaum killing the team like he did with the Jets. What a group of incompetent morons running this team. LMMFAO!!!

  19. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I do think there will probably be a surprise release or two, or a major restructure with someone. There almost has to be. I can’t see us paying James his 5thYO at $9.3M either.

  20. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Lou, $32M guaranteed over any period of time is more than one year at $16M. What if he gets hurt or his stats aren’t so great and that moment never comes again? He wants it now. He should call J.G. Wentworth… 877 CASHNOW!!! LOL

  22. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Maybe we could sign Case Keenum. Decent money with knowing at the least he’s a backup.
    Then try to draft Baker.
If so trade Tannehill during the draft
    Or
Case and Tannehill battle it out
We have 2 QB’s either way

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Case is expected to fetch around $22M/year; we can’t afford him right now.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Any team looking for a starting QB. Latest rumor I heard (early this week) was that the Broncos may be going for him. Trading Aqib to the Rams just freed up $11M to possibly make it happen.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And remember, the Broncos damn near signed Case two years ago when Kubiak was still with them. I’ll bet they wish they had now.

Cutting Suh to save 4M…..seems to me he’s worth having for that extra 4M.

Cut him next year if they want.

And the post June 1 designation is stupid because you can’t use that money til June and you have another big dead money hit in 2019…..so no thanks

  33. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Without looking at the cap, look at Quinn as an addition to the defense along with the changes we made last year. Very new defense. A mix of vets and youth. Wake is the only one mid 30’s. Most are in their 20’s. We need these guys to come together quicker this year. Too much miscommunication last year. You could see it. They shined at times and looked like Swiss Cheese at times.

First time DC Matt Burke had a challenging season like everyone else. New DL and DB coaches added.

Gase hasn’t proven who he is as a HC yet, but he sure as hell isn’t complacent. 5 major coaching changes heading into his 3rd year. Personnel changing too. It’s part of what hiring a new HC is about. The roster changes.

  34. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Piggy, have you met Wedge’s new friend? It’s a little odd the resemblance don’t you think?

  36. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Cutting Suh this year would only free up 3.9M in cap space. They still will have paid 18 odd million against the cap.

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

See I knew deep down you love Suh

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Can’t do it this year. Nobody is listening to me. We will try to compete this year to be a contender. Depending on what happens will determine the future. If we have a bad season, I see a lot of purging regardless if Gase is still HC. Results rule the day.

  37. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Tannehill you do realize New England isn’t a state, right?

  38. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Son, I think Suh is a good player. I never hated the player. I hated the deal. He is not worth 17% of the salary cap. Any team that would tie up 17% on one player and leave 83% to be split up between the other 52 players made a bad, bad stupid deal.

It has “nothing” to do with Suh, but since we signed him we have been bottom of the league against the run, why?

    Must be Tannehill’s fault huh?

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

In large part yes Tannehill but I digress…

We need thirty points a game or at least close. We’re not close. That’s the NFL today- first one to thirty

  39. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

    Hickey will always have Landry

That’s pretty cool, Jarvis is special

  40. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

BTW Son, your 30 points is inaccurate.

playoff teams averaged the following points per game last year

    Pats 28.62
    Buff 18.87
    Pitt 25.37
    Jax 26.06
    Ten 20.87
    KC 25.93

Etc, etc, etc Not one team who made the playoffs last year averaged 30 points Most were closer to 25

Actually if you look and manipulate the different orders, accending / decending points for points against

    https://www.nfl.com/standings/division/2017/REG?sortField=overallPtsAgainst&sortIsAscending=true

you will see that points against or “defense” is a stronger indicator of who makes the playoffs or not. It may be anecdotal but the correlations is stronger than that of scoring.

  41. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Juice got a Touchdown or First down on 62% of his 112 receptions. What if that number were only 42%? When you you factor quotients and what not that makes us 4 1/2 and 11 1/2 at least.
Consequently when we start scoring properly his 62% gives us 11 1/2 wins with a good chance of 12. It’s simple mathematics.

  42. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    $397K per tackle…..

  43. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

money thrown away with no effect on the seaons’ record.

  44. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Son, serious question. Tannehill and Landry have played together for 2.75 years or whatever and somehow Landry is special but the guy getting him the ball is an afterthought? You gotta balance it out a little bit. 2017 was Jarvis’ worst YPCA at 8.8 but he had 9 TDs. Like that number is dominant. Stills did it two years ago and most think he’s solid with speed.

What has Landry done to change our PPG over 4 years?

I love his style of play and his intangibles, but he doesn’t dominate games on the scoreboard. Very good football player, not a top dog.

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

The style of play and intangibles are the most important part with Landry. You win with guys like him. And because I know you’d yell at me I won’t say “and you don’t win with Opi Taylor” so
      Oops
      YAC is where it’s at
The blocking is pretty good too
      Oh and likes to win

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We’ll see what happens, Son. I’m not a fan of mocking names for players especially on our team. Every fan and pundit still talks about the OL but it’s still Tannehill. Until they see Moore and Cutler go through the same thing. 2017 was as bad as it gets. Nope, not Tannehill, but let’s kind of make it seem like that. LOL

        Go Phins!!!

  45. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

    Even though… never mind lol

  48. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Like Sam Madison said, add a TE to be a threat and Landry’s value is not the same. That’s the team’s thought. Utilize the RBs and TEs in the passing game more rather than a dominant overpaid slot receiver.

But… you either re-sign him at your number or trade him. If he plays on the franchise tag, I think that’s a negative for the org. Neither side is all in and you do it again in 2019.

  49. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Yeah we’ve been so good at drafting or acquiring TE’s

All of a sudden we’re gonna have some special TE.

  56. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I also understand Landry not jumping at the offer we made to him even if it sounds like a fair offer. This is his one chance for his best payday so he is not going to take the offer. He is going to maximize his his earnings

Like I’ve said, I understand Landry wanting a long term deal to “take care of his family”. But if the numbers are correct in what the Dolphins offered, then I agree it’s on Landry. Heck, they offered more than what I would have. I thought 12m/yr was what he was worth.

A lot of talk about cutting Suh, and his 2018 26 mil contract, it looks as if he has 22,200,000 in Dead Money? so from my understanding if Miami cuts him they will eat that number against the cap, is this correct???

I like Suh, i hope we can restructure

And heck no we ain’t cutting Suh, even if we might trade him that was an option. Wake is the more likely guy on the DL to get traded. Even if hope it would be because he wants a chance at the ring.

  67. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

At the end of the day all we want as fans is to know we have a chance to win the game each week and to watch exciting football. Not go in worried about this and that and that we have no chance. At least that’s how it is for me. Regardless of who’s on the team, if we play exciting games and win more than we lose I think we fans will be okay with the status of the team. And if we ever do make it to the big dance, I’m not sure how we’ll all be able to handle it. LOL

  68. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s pretty wild that Drew Brees is set to be a UFA.

  69. Randy's avatar Randy says:

When I bitch about these huge contracts people say: “Well, that’s what the market dictates, so that’s what they’re worth.” But, then everybody wants to complain about them and claim the player isn’t worth it. None of these players give you $20+M “worth” of play. Make up your damn minds. Lol

    MikeE,
Dilly, dilly! Now fuck off! Lol

  72. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Why does a QB we take…or might take…in this draft have to immediately replace Tannehill? You guys have been saying “wait until next year…” with Tannehill his whole career. Doesn’t a new kid get 7 years to develop too? Lol

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m on board taking a QB. I think it’s time. If Tannehill plays well the next 2-3 years and remains the starter so be it. If not maybe the new young buck beats him out at some point.

  73. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
Minnesota failed to pick somebody in the draft one year, do you don’t necessarily “have” to pick someone….but it’s encouraged. Lol

Would anyone else be willing to take Derwin James if he’s there when we pick? I know we have two good safeties right now but they are both more strong safety. James just looks like he might be a really good player and has a lot of Versatility

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m sure he’ll be on the board and an option. I’ve read various reports about him. Some people like him a lot and others don’t think his size and athleticism shows up enough on the field. He is known to be the alpha in the room with leaderships skills and he does seem to fit the new sub package type player teams are gravitating too.

  77. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
I just started watching film on James a couple weeks ago. I don’t understand why people would say his athleticism doesn’t show up on the field. There’s lots of film that I watched where he was the best player on the field. I agree though. I think he fits with how the NFL is trending toward hybrid safety/ linebackers.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think if Tremaine Edmunds or Roquan was there, I’d rather take one of those guys. Nelson would be my choice, but we’re probably S.O.L. for him at #11

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Well he always seems to be in the top 15 of the draft so he is highly regarded.

I know we have our own experts, but?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

So Suh might get cut cause we paid him too much and Landry may stay cause we franchised him for too much…….least we know something is gonna happen though.

  80. Does Suh have a no trade clause in his contract?

  81. Because if he doesn’t have a no trade clause and you’re saying he may get cut you’re basically telling all the other teams he’s available for trade. Trading him gives another team a cheap option since we’re taking the majority of the hit on the cap and they’re getting a great value. So, we SHOULD get decent compensation from a trade like that.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

The problem is when the rest of the league knows you have to cut him they are not going to offer us jack shit and just wait for us to cut him

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yep, that’s how it usually goes, although if there is a team that really wants him, they will make the trade to guarantee they get him, rather than risk a bidding war.

We must be idiots to be fans of this stupid team You mean to tell me this brain trust has decided that the best way for us to get better is to get rid of our best player on offense and our best player on defense.
    And commit to Tannehill.

    It’s honestly unbelievable.

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

I think it’s all “speculation”…just something to drum up people to read their stuff.

I said it yesterday….They save 4M cutting Suh….I think he’s worth having for that extra 4M. Lol

  94. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Maybe this team is building for a few years down the road. Getting ammunition to move up in the draft, possibly, because if you are trading away your best players(Landry and Suh…and Ajayi too) to build for a few years from now…you draft a QB now…so he’s in year 3 or so when you really believe you will be competing for a serious playoff run. Tannehill still has a year to prove he’s actually a franchise QB. If he does, great! If not, you have a guy who’s already had a year to sit and learn….and the team has had a year to see if he is THE guy to build around. Just spitballing.

  97. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Sadly, after going into retirement…without a training camp…having no rapport with his teammates or time to learn anything…playing behind a bunch of backups on the OL….receivers who seemed to take the year off….a RB Corp that forgot where the end zone was…broken ribs….Cutler still threw as many TDs as Tannehill did in the previous year in which many on this blog thought was a really good year for him. So…there’s that.
