2018 Miami Dolphins – Free Agency – C’s

This is the last look at free agent offensive linemen.  We’ve already covered the tackles and the guards, and now it’s time to look at the centers.  This may be an exercise in futility, i get that, but there is always the possibility that we actually move on from C Mike Pouncey, whether it’s due to injury, salary, or a combination of both.  So many fans are freaking out because we’re over the cap by $19M, and Mike Pouncey counts $9M against the cap, but this year his dead cap hit is only $2M, so releasing Pouncey for financial reasons is feasible.  Can we replace him?  I’m here to take a look at whether we can.

Ryan Jensen  6’3 310  26YO

11_JensenStory_news

Jensen started all 16 games last season for the Baltimore Ravens.  He was drafted by the ravens in the 6th RD of the 2013 draft.  He played some at LG and RG before finally becoming the Ravens center last season.  He didn’t participate at the combine, but just to compare since the combine is all the rage right now, at his Colorado pro day, Jensen ran a 5.28 40, an 8’2′ broad jump, 25 1/2″ vertical, and put up 30 reps of 225lbs.  Once again, I invoke the sentiment that if he can play for the Ravens, he can play for us.  Spotrac projects Jensen to be worth around $9M per, so we would have to make his 1st year contract a cap friendly one, which isn’t difficult when you’re doing a long term deal.

**********************************************************************************

Weston Richburg  6’3 298  26YO

Philadelphia Eagles v New York Giants

Weston Richburg was drafted in the 2nd RD by the Giants in the 2014 NFL draft.  He started 47 of 48 games his first 3 seasons with the Giants.  In 2017, Westburg suffered a concussion on Oct 1,  (Game 4) and his slow recovery forced the Giants to put him on IR, ending his season.  Richburg was a solid, if unspectacular starter for the Giants.  The fact that they IRed him in his money year showed they didn’t really have any intention of re-signing him.  He’s a young, average to above average NFL center.  Missing 12 games in his final year before FA will hurt him salary wise, but how much, I don’t know.

***********************************************************************************

Russell Bodine  6’3 310  25YO

613744004.0

Now here’s a guy we should be interested in.  Only 25 years old, he has started every single game in his 4 years in the NFL with the Bengals.  His combine numbers were pretty impressive.  5.18 40, 42 reps of 225lbs, 29; vertical (both his bench press and vertical were tops).  Bodine is a powerful guy who moves people and plays with a mean streak.  He sounds like a perfect candidate here, but I have no idea what kind of salary he will be looking for.

************************************************************************************

Brian Schwenke 6’3 314  27YO

schwenke600-080115

I remember watching Schwenke in the Senior Bowl back in 2013 and being impressed by the kid.  Stout powerful, with a chip on his shoulder, he did really in the drills, especially the mano a mano drills.  He was drafted in the 4th RD in ’13 by the Titans, but his career never really took off there, starting only 30 games over 5 years.  If you go by his combine numbers, he matches up pretty well, running a 4.99 40, putting up 31 reps, running a 7’31 cone drill, but all that hasn’t translated into NFL success.  He would be an inexpensive pickup, but to expect him to play up to even an injured 80% Mike Pouncey level of play would be unlikely.

**************************************************************************************

Travis Swanson  6’5 312  27YO

453440734.0

So we want to replace one puff pastry with another?  Travis Swanson seems to me like Mike Pouncey light (very light!).  Just about the same size as Pouncey, Swanson is a finesse player, but was also a 2 time captain at Arkansas.  Swanson has 42 starts over 4 years for the Detroit Lions, last year starting and playing in only 11 games.  He was put on IR for the 2nd time in 2 years due to concussion issues.  It’s been heavily rumored we have interest in Swanson, but I don’t get it.  Didn’t we learn from Jordan Cameron?  Should we replace our C with gossamer hips for a C with scattered grey matter?  I’ll take a pass on that one, thank you! LOL – Is it me, or does Swanson even look like he’s trying to figure out what it is he’s doing on the field?

***********************************************************************************

So this completes the O-line folks.  If you have any suggestions of guys I may have missed, feel free to mention them on the blog.

SPEAKING OF CLEVELAND, the last time Miami played Cleveland, the Cleveland kicker missed 2 very makeable FG’s, allowing the Fins to get into overtime where Ajayi’s TD run won it for the Fins.
    ———–
NOW we’ve got CLEVELAND’s kicker and Ajayi’s got a Super Bowl ring in Philly!! –If the Browns played the Dolphins tomorrow, my money would be on Miami!! –Pathetic!!

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

CHECK THAT!!–My money would be on CLEVELAND to beat Miami!

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

We watched that game together. That was the one where I was ready to run to my car, the field goal was missed and then went back to the seats to watch overtime to the win. That was an awesome game. That we should have lost it made it all the more memorable.

  2. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So what did Landry make per game with 6.25 catches, 63 yards and a TD% of .34 compared to what he’ll make now? Yikes!!!!

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

RIGHT, AGAIN, TIM. The NFL’s all-time leader in receptions the first 4 seasons certainly has to suck!! Why this makes the Wes Welker situation look trivial by comparison (They’re STILL LAUGHING in NEW ENGLAND!!)

      LOL!!!

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

I hope you have plenty of beer…lol….you are right, this is going to be fun

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s just a stat of being targeted over and over within 10 yards 90% of the time. Everyone knows this but somehow it’s monumental. Many WRs have caught more passes in a season than Landry and they usually have over 1,500 yards and double-digit TDs.

Why not pay Landry like his more recent contemporary Julian Edelman rather than use Welker who’s been out of the league for a few years? Go look at his stats. The opinion on Landry is pretty split across the NFL world. Disagreeing doesn’t make the other side morons. That’s childish.

  3. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

What do you guys think… are we going to get CJ Anderson, one way or the other?

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      Yes

      Bc I hate that move

      So it’s bound to happen

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’ve got that same feeling as well, Pig. And if that’s the case, it would likely preclude us from drafting a RB inside of the first 4 rounds.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yes, Gase views him as reliable in all three phases – rush/block/catch. It’s okay when the Pats sign RBs from all over the league but we can’t do it? It’s not like Anderson is going to break the bank and he’s only 27 with mild wear and tear.

How about let Gase build the team the way he fucking wants to because he’s the HC, rather than millions of fans’ opinions. I mean holy fuck!!!

Maybe he really likes the idea of Drake/Anderson and what he can do with ‘his’ offense. Has this really become about shoot everything down as a fanbase as opposed to watching it play out and going from there? What if the offense is really fuckin good this year? Will you care that it’s with some new players?

  4. The team needs to complete the process by either trading or releasing Suh, trading or releasing Tannehill and also Timmons and Thomas. Go out in FA and get the players to give the team the fresh start it needs including at least one offensive lineman and then get another in the draft.

This year is not about winning. It’s about restructuring the team in the image of Gase with his staff and getting the players he wants to use on his team and giving him the best chance of succeeding. I, for one, believe they’re all in on Gase and that’s what this is going to be all about and if they’re going to win with him they’re going to do it with the players he wants in the places he wants them.

  5. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Spin this any way you want but this trade is a shit sandwich. We are losing our most productive player on offense over the last 4 years. We are getting minimal compensation in return. We have no suitable replacement on our roster. Let us not kid ourselves that Caroo is going to miraculously get better after doing nothing since he has been drafted. Parker is on the cusp of being a bust. Stills is a good no. 2 WR but not a work horse guy like Landry.

  6. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

    Lmao

  7. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Ken
No worries. We still have Tannehill. Haven’t you heard? He makes everybody else better. LOL

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Tannehill is not the problem. The problem is he will have no one to throw to. Parker will strain his mangina again, Caroo will remain in his doghouse, we have no TE so our offense is going to be a handoff to Drake, screen pass to Drake and Drake on a wheel route.

      • Tannehill is definitely part of the problem but he won’t be for long. Goodbye pimple on the ass of the Phins. We’re getting a new qb for Gase’s offense this year

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

FA and the draft isn’t over yet. Stills is a nice speed WR and Grant could be breaking out. Those two and Drake is a lot of speed on the field at the same time. They have all shown big plays. Parker is in his 4th season so we can roll with him again to compete but we shouldn’t bank on him. Carroo, who knows, is there a sleeper on the PS?

Again back to FA and the draft. We’ll target OL, TE, RB, QB and WR in the offseason.

Quinn on defense and maybe 2 or 3 others is all we need with the revamp we’ve been doing since 2016 – LB, S/LB, FS/DS…

There’s not many defenders left from 2015. Maybe 7-8 off the cuff. You usually keep 23-25 on defense. I’d say that’s quite the turnover in two seasons. The group we have now has limited playing time together. But there is talent here. This is a very important training camp.

  8. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Landry … meh … canceled most of his best moments with silly penalties.
I see that his market was a 4th rounder … that’s about right for his production level.
    Glad for him as Cleveland will give him the money he wanted;
he spurned our overpayment at 13.5 MILLION dollars. So who is showing loyalty here?
I liked him but we only had one winning season while he was here and he only averaged 5.5 TDs and 10 ypc while fumbling 14 times which seems like a lot for a WR.

    He’s neither tall nor fast.

  9. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Pig,

I came across a very interesting stat, which I’m not going to be able to quote to a “T” (based on memory, alone). It went something like, the only RB drafted over the last “x” (5-6 years?) that has actually played through his contract was player “x”.

Sorry for the ambiguity, but the point of the stat was to show that RBs in the modern NFL don’t even get through their first contract before either being cut or traded.

Do you know what this means, to me? Why the hell would we want an aged RB (paying top $$$ for a RB, via FA) when it’s a young man’s position who can be drafted for rookie $$$?

Like you, I’m NOT in favor of bringing CJ Anderson to Miami when we can draft a RB … so long as we FIX our O-Line.

  10. I don’t care about Landry. He’s not on the team anymore. So it doesn’t matter that they traded him or he’s gone to CLE or what they got for him. It’s time to move on. He’s gone.

Time to see what else the team has planned because the word is they plan on being extremely active and aggressive in free agency so I’m ready to see some moves tomorrow and Sunday before we hit the legal tampering period.

They need to clear some additional cap space to get some room for the players they plan on going after. So, fasten your seatbelts because two names you’re going to hear is Suh and Tannehill.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I am so tired of us being active in FA. We always are and where has it gotten us? I want to see us build through the draft and keep our good talent

  11. Ken's avatar Ken says:

C J Anderson would be a bad signing

  12. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Ken
No Tannehill isn’t the problem. The problem is Tannehill isn’t the answer either.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Tannehill is not elite but you can win with Tannehill. You need to put talent around him and not subtract it like we seem to be doing

  13. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

I don’t understand why CJ Anderson is being discussed. Is this just speculation for the sake of speculating?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Many in NFL circles are speculating that CJ Anderson will either be cut or traded.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

He and Gase have history and he tried to sign him before. And we need another RB. Other than that not sure….maybe some “source” put out a tweet.

    • Yes, like MF said there’s talk that Anderson may be cut or traded and there was a story out of DEN the other day that stated they may be interested in getting James in a trade from MIA rather than letting him hit the open market because of the cost and Anderson could be part of that trade.

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

      Ok, great, speculation then

What’s wrong with CJ Anderson? He rushed 1k last year at 4 Yds a carry in that horrible Denver offense? He’s still in his 20s

  17. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

IN THE EVENT that DeVante doesn’t pan out this year (his last year under his rookie contract), I’d advise looking at drafting either of DJ Chark or Allen Lazard (<– assist to Dbolt on Lazard).

I'm just putting that out there, being we've just lost Jarvis' production, and may not be sold on DeVante after this season (forward thinking).

And if DeVante DOES pan out this year? BIG, boundary WRs with DeVante and Chark or Lazard… reminiscent of Philip Rivers throwing to Vincent Jackson and my man Malcolm Floyd. And if we get a STUD TE this year to boot, reminiscent of Antonio Gates? ALL THE BETTER.

    • I, for one, am tired of going after the track stars and want to have a corps of blue collar guys that get open because they can run routes better than anyone else out there. So, Lazard would be a great pick. Kirk would be a great pickup.

I also would like to see us be aggressive in FA and land either or both Robinson and Jordan Matthews. Matthews is not a fav of many but he’s a lankier slot than what you normally see and should be on the cheaper side.

There’s plenty of options out there, including some who are already on the roster like Ford and i’m still not ruling out Carroo. He’s going to finally get his shot this year now that mr. 8.8 is gone.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m getting tired of being “AGGRESSIVE” in FA… that’s why we’re in the money pit that we’re in, under Tannenbaum.

      • I’m tired of being aggressive in free agency and signing players to contracts that don’t make sense like we did with Suh. Or signing players like Wheeler and Ellerbe. If we sign the right guys at the right price then I’m all for it.

You want to win games and stay competitive you’re going to need a mixture of vets and rookies and some of those vets are going to need to be brought in from the outside.

You want Bradham. So do I. well, we’re not getting him unless we’re aggressive.

It’s not like “Joe Blow” merely speculating, man. $$$ vs cap vs youth vs vision vs success.

We went to the playoffs with Ajayi and traded him. The Broncos SUCKED with Anderson last year.

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

I am not sure what this means, I guess my point was really wondering what reliable source had CJ Anderson coming to Miami. I had not heard that. I am neither against or for it, because there really is nothing to comment on yet

OK, so let’s make a list for the draft. We’re talking QB, LB, RB, WR… in the first 4 rounds.
Just curious how we are going to upgrade the 2 most glaring weaknesses, interior line and TE. Please, don’t tell me FA. We know how that has turned out with OGs and TEs.

If this regime tries to wait till the mid rounds once again or tries to go cheap in FA at those positions, we will be in the same situation this time next year.

  21. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

    Don’t need a WR.

    Need OL OL TE LB

  22. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Lou, you were’t a big fan of Landry and didn’t want to pay him and knew the situation we were in. Why was getting something, anything for him a bad thing for the FO? You’re mocking them and at the same time saying it’s great because we’ll now be better on offense. LOL

I happen to agree we’ll be better on offense because Gase is building it his way other than what he inherited and tried to patch up some areas. He didn’t like the overall makeup of the offense. That’s his call and his job. You are right that we’re blowing up the offense to some degree. Let’s hope it pans out. As fans that’s all we want.

I think the defense is almost set and they have two new coaches as well – DL and DB. That was revamped over the last two years and not finished yet.

    BRO,

BUILD THROUGH THE DRAFT, augment via FA.

Until this clown of an owner is done with his “orange carpets”, celebrity worship, philanthropy-leading (I’VE GOT $$$!!! LOOK AT ME!!! I’M THE BEST-EST NFL owner EVER!!!), buddy-leaning (from King Carl to Mike Tannenbaum), and $$$ over the product on the field… we are FUCKED.

Yeah, some are going to take a SHOT at me for calling Ross out for his philanthropy… but that’s IRRELEVANT to success as an NFL owner: GLORY BE to RO$$ and our SUBSTANTIAL losing record under his ownership. The dude might be a good man, but he SUCKS as an NFL owner in terms of the product on the field.

Until this team has coaching that can actually DEVELOP players and a competent FO that can draft good players, we’re going to be mired in mediocrity and under the mercy of Tannenbaum’s $pending problem$.

In my view signing RBs is just a dumb move

    draft them

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It depends on what Anderson costs. I always felt his $4.5M or whatever was not a big deal for what he produced. DEN had no QB and trouble on the OL. Sound familiar? They’re picking #5.

Try to look at potential as a group on our team as opposed to what any player was on some other team. It’s never going to be the same. Signing Anderson is not like signing Frank Gore. LOL

      • I also think that if Anderson were part of a trade like they were talking about for James and came in with that price tag he’s most likely restructured to get his cap hit down this year. We could take the hit down to around $2.7M this season.

  25. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I wonder what these guys are planning. Trading or cutting all your best players doesn’t suggest they are focused on winning now. It usually means you’re rebuilding. If Landry, Suh and Ajayi…arguably your best defensive player and two best offensive players…all get traded away, are we really trying to win now? I’d say this is the perfect time to jump into the high end and go get a QB you like, if that’s your plan. Are we accumulating draft picks to make a move?

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

For now Suh is still on the team

But I think they are remaking a team

I can see a qb in the 1st round
      And maybe a Tannehill trade

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

Suh is still on the team and trading Ajai and Landry netted a 4th, how does that help us to move up to get a QB?

    • I hope we’re accumulating some picks and more cap to make a move in both FA and the draft to better position ourselves to be more consistently competitive starting next year in ’19.

I’d rather we make those moves now because we can then have most of the pieces in place this season and then fill in next year with a few key pieces and be off to the races in yr 2 rather than waiting to get it done.

    ————
    EXCELLENT question!!!

The answer, to your question, is NO(!)… I was NOT calling for Ross’ head after the 10-6 season. I was actually warming up to Ross.

HOWEVER, I’d been calling for Ross’ head since he took over — minus the 10-6 season — and now again.

It would seem as though the 10-6 season was an anomaly when looking at the BIG picture.

  27. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Piggy,
Do you ever see a trade like Landry’s and wonder if we made an additional “handshake” part of the deal to make another trade/deal during the draft? I also wonder if Denver would have any interest in Tannehill.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    bookman,
I was just speculating, but could you use those 4th round pics in a package to get another 2nd and use that. Is that not possible? I am not a great draft trade mind.

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

Randy, I have no clue, I just don’t think the Landry deal had anything to do with the QB situation. I personally am for going all in on the OL and TE, along with finding another RB, so we can run the F’ing football, control the LOS, and maximize Tannehills talents.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think the idea is that the team might be looking for a bit of a makeover

It’s a little odd that they were so willing to part with both Ajayi and Landry who were 2 of the biggest producers in the 2016 season

I would think they would use those pieces instead of parting with them

  30. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think it’s possible they are going to use the 11 for a qb

They don’t need the trade up imo
So the extra picks are less about a qb and more about new players

Those are positions that keep getting talked about. …Definitely not my list.

IMO, we need to go OG, TE, and maybe another OL with our 1st 3 picks. The only exception would be DT if we somehow needed to replace Suh.

I was saying something similar earlier this week

A 4th rounder? I’m not sure we don’t do much better with a comp pick down the line

Mando is saying tannebaum wanted room to sign free agents
I don’t think this move was about acquiring picks
I think it was about cap room so the team can more dramatic moves than we expected going into the offseason

  34. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Did FA and the draft happen already? LOL

Oh and while we’re at it, Drake (24), Stills (25-26) and Grant (25-26) in 2018, thanks for the big plays but we all know you can’t do that again. You’re old and has beens. 😉

  35. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I’d rather have James at $9M/year than C.J. Anderson for 4.5, I think.

  36. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Cj Anderson is a solid RB
My problem with signing him is not about him and more about he philosophy

Rookie RBs are usually immediately productive
But vet RBs often fade very quickly
    Short shelf life

They are cheaper free agents than most
But still it’s $ spent that could be used elsewhere

It’s ususual to see a RB with a long career

You draft them, take the 4-5 years and draft another

Signing them doesn’t usually work out long term

  37. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Lou, we’re seeing more and more player for player/pick compensation than I can remember ever.

I do think a DEN/MIA trade James for Anderson is possible. I do not think we will pay James $9.3M in 2018. I wouldn’t if I was GM. That would pay him as elite. Really?

The Phins lost their starting QB for 2017. They suck. Let’s blame Ross!!
    ————-
Ah, man… it’s not like that… it’s not so “cut and dry” like that, man. It’s more a matter of Ross putting Mike Tannenbaum in charge of the Dolphins operations… BAD MOVE by Ross!

And as a result, we’ve seen our most productive players being traded for mere ham sandwiches. Why? Cap casualties.

Tannenbaum’s prized deal is Ndamukong Suh… and he’s a BEAST! But so long as Suh is eating up so much of the cap (along with other BAD Tannenbaum deals), we’re now in the biz of cutting/trading some of our very best players, man.

So while we’re being honest, Ross is the one who put Tannenbaum in charge. Yes… the same Tannenbaum who put the stej in CAP HELL before he came to our beloved Phins, man.

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Drake produced the same and in my opinion better than Ajayi did last year.

People like to bash Big Joe for his seemingly weak personality, but now do the same when it’s the opposite. I have a hard time believing Tbaum is moving these players against Gase’s wishes. So I put a lot of these moves on the HC. He’s in year 3 now and he’s looking like he’s bringing and getting rid of players that fit him.

So let’s say he fires Tannenbaum, Grier and Gase. You think there will be no turnover with the new regime? That’s been the fuckin problem for almost 20 years. We’ve made the playoffs 3 times since 2001 through now. Let a fucking head coach build his team without constantly bashing his every move. Forgot about 2016 at 10-6 and playoffs first season. All you think about is 2017. What changed there? Nope… not the reason and I stand by it yet it’s the most prominent evidence there is. LOL

I just would like to build a team under the philosophy of the head coach and give him time. The reason I trust Gase is because they were 10-6 when nobody thought they would be. He has my trust, especially after the injury year in 2017

  50. Randy's avatar Randy says:

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

  51. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

ER, do you see top 5 madness happening for QBs? I do. Maybe 1 of 4 drops to top 10 😉

Just let it be known, we have no shot at a good football player at #11. We are in the pit of darkness. Even #12 and beyond will do better than #11. It is known. The history of these picks is always the same year to year too so no reason to think any different. All prospects are the same. 😉

  52. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

The way I look at it is that in 2016 We made the playoffs but Tannehill got hurt before so we don’t know how far he would’ve taken us. In 2017 he was injured so that was a lost year. In 2018 I expect him to return as good or better than 2016, along with the development of the younger players and those on IR last year. I believe the Dolphins can compete with anyone next year

  53. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
I don’t think anyone here has ever claimed it’s all just Tannehill’s fault. Some like him more than others but I don’t think anyone puts all the blame on him. But, he is the QB and that’s just the way it is. They get the blame and the glory.
    ***
It’s not fair that offensive guards make about 1/3 of what a QB does either but fair has nothing to do with it. LOL

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

Yeah, except when the Dolphins made the playoffs and he got hurt, he did not get any glory or credit for getting them to that point ….he only seems to get blame or indifference.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      Uh-hem agree to disagree.

That said, lets say we draft Baker Mayfield who is projected to us all over the place. If he was our guy and made us a better team I’d say thanks Ryan and good luck.

  54. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    bookman,
Well, Tannehill didn’t actually get us to the playoffs. The playoffs were still in question when he was hurt and Moore was the QB who actually won the games that got us there. We actually have no idea whether or not Tannehill could have won those games too. All we know is Moore did. I also remember him getting plenty of credit for how he played that year. People exaggerate his play all the time. We’ve had six years to see that he’s not the kind of quarterback who goes out and wins games for you. He’s just not. That doesn’t make him a horrible quarterback.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Up 21-9 with Tannehill vs. ARZ when he got hurt, and then Moore wins it 26-23. LOL

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

You state things about him as if they are fact. Sorry, but I can counter with incredible plays I have seen him make with a below average OL. We can debate this all day. In my opinion, the shortest path to success lies with improving OL, TE, LB. I truly believe RT17 can win us a SB if Gase gets those other areas shored up…..just my opinion.

  61. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I think the moves we are making are fascinating. We refuse to pay a slot guy who is our slowest WR as if he were Randy Moss, knowing we are deep at the position and need help at other spots.

Instead of just letting him walk for nothing in return, we snag a 4th which will be a great place to get a solid young RB in a yr full of viable players at that position, which is a far greater need for us than WR, as we have only one true NFL quality RB under contract.

Plus we traded the extra 4th we got from Philly for a known dynamic pass rusher, which is a position of need for us, as My Man Wake is getting old now and we did not get enough sacks last year.

So we threw off a huge salary and solved one huge need and armed ourselves to solve another with an extra quality level pick. We still have our natural 1,2.3 picks plus an extra 4th to get our needed OG, TE, QB, and LB.

Let’s see what other cool stuff we do in FA.

    —————–
OPENED UP the TAMPA BAY TIMES SPORTS SECTION to read that the Bucs’ star receiver, Mike Evans was just signed to a new 5-year deal for an average of $16.1 million per year.
Here are the comparable statistics for 2017:
Mike Evans: 71 receptions 1001 yards 5 TD receptions
    J. Landry: 112 receptions 987 yards 9 TD receptions
Over the first 4 years of their careers, Evans has averaged 77 receptions per year while Jarvis Landry has averaged 100 receptions per year, AN ALL-TIME NFL RECORD FOR THE FIRST 4 YEARS FOR A RECEIVER!!!

AND ALL WE GET FOR LANDRY IS A 4th ROUND DRAFT CHOICE???? –fucking idiots, indeed!!
    —————-
They are laughing at Dolphins’ management in Tampa Bay!! –A guy on a radio show said “Are the Dolphins Brain Dead?” NOW, to be fair, this is THE SAME Tampa Bay franchise that lost 10 or more games for 10 consecutive years. But THEY DID beat the woeful Dolphins the last two times they’ve played!!! WHEN they are laughing at you in Tampa, you KNOW your franchise is poorly managed!!
SO I REPEAT: Only a Jets fan or a moron could support moves like this. If the shoe fits, wear it!!
And yes, I’m aware that the Fins were/are in cap hell, which helped to force these abysmal trade-offs. BUT EXACTLY WHO PUT US IN THIS CAP HELL??-Why it was Steve Ross’s hires, the so-called “DOOFUS BRIGADE!!” This franchise WILL NOT win a playoff game as long as Ross, and his hires, are calling the shots!

The Landry trade was terrible for the same reason the situation with James is terrible, etc, etc. There seems to be no understanding on how a player will pan out until after year 4. Why is that? James has played the majority of his time here since he was drafted. How come we are making the decision in Year 5 instead of in Year 4? The team also spends more on other teams leftovers than their own.

For the people defending this regime once again, all I have to say is Timmons, Cutler, Thomas, Maxwell, Mario Williams, etc. Our main FA acquisitions the last few years were all gigantic busts. Our best young draft picks? All leaving the team. This is not how you build a contender. Having no clue if Tannehill could get hurt and then overpaying Cutler is not foresight or smart. The list of bungled moves is long but I’m supposed to trust these guys as I watch almost all of the players from drafts before 2015 on other teams or gone from the NFL. That is not successful team building, drafting, or planning. It just isn’t.

  65. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s amusing to me the different emotions and viewpoints on display. I’m not going to cheer anybody up who hates the trade, nor validate anyone’s opinion who is OK with Landry being gone. The landscape of the NFL is changing. The days of players staying with the franchise they were drafted by seem to be coming to an end. I’m not even sure exactly what it’s become, but it seems like there really is no long term plan anymore. I think every franchise gears up and tries to compete this year. There have been so many more trades, more than I can ever remember, and it seems the value of players in general has decreased.

Possibly the best RB in the NFL, Le’Veon Bell can’t get a long term contract done. His value is through the roof, he’s a dual threat back, who is exceptional at both running and catching the ball, but PIT won’t commit to a big long term contract. maybe the Browns should trade for Bell, and then they can draft their QB and maybe Bradley Chubb too. That would be something!

I wanted Landry to stay here, but it’s a 2-way street. He chased the money, and in FA, players get overpaid, especially when a team like the Browns has $113M in cap space. Good for CLE, maybe they’ll finally get something right. They’ve won 4 games in the last 3 seasons. I’m not sure we really wanted him badly, but our offer of $13.5M was more than fair, it was overpriced, but fair. Let CLE pay him $16M per, whatever, it wasn’t happening here. We’re not in a good spot cap wise, we have 1 ridiculous contract for a DT. Our QB, if he plays well will be worth his contract, which for today’s standards, is a low starting salary. If he sucks, then he will be cut either this season or next, w/o much of a cap penalty. I keep looking at the O-line, because that’s where it’s at for our team. Tunsil should be fine at LT, but who plays LG is so important. We need to upgrade there. Is Pouncey going to make it through another season healthy? Can he still play at a high level? RG also extremely important. My guess is we draft only 1 interior lineman this year, and we do it before RD 3. Will that be enough? Is it possible Davis and Asiata are ready? Fixing this O-line needs to be the first and most important order of business.

I would like to draft a QB this year, because Ryan Tannehill should have some competition. Either it makes him or breaks him, but he needs to have a legit competitor there to either elevate his game, or someone that can be better. He’s been average, and has played better than average, but we need more. Drafting a QB early will make it difficult to get what I think is most important, a top OL, and a top TE. We’ve ignored or simply failed at TE for way too long. Time to get this one right. I have more, but my fingers, hurt. maybe later. lol

  66. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

OD – talk about cherry picking stats. Evans has 10 more TD’s than Landry, and he averages 5 more yards per catch. Evans is a much better, more impactful WR than Landry, they shouldn’t even be compared, other than the fact they both have WR before their name. They’re as different as 2 WR’s can be.

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

GOTTA disagree with you, Mike. Miami’s horrid O-Line forced quicker, shorter, passes the last several years to avoid even MORE sacks and MORE injuries to our QB’s. Put Landry on a team with a better O-Line and his yards per catch and TD’s will go up, altho’ I DON’T expect that to happen in Cleveland anytime soon. I believe if Evans is worth over $16 million per year for 5 years than Landry, too, is worth more than you think he’s worth. But, unlike certain others on this board, I DO respect your opinion. Time, and Miami’s W-L records, will prove one of us right. THAT SAID, we certainly will not get comparable talent for Landry and Ajayi with this year’s two 4th round picks thanks to the “DOOFUS BRIGADE’s” destruction of this franchise.

  67. I just want to see them stay the course and continue with the purge over the next two days. Free up more cap, sign some guys at key positions and get it done in the draft. C’mon Phins. Go big or go home.

Sonny – I know, I’ve been to the dark side, and I’ve worked really hard to stay away from it over the last few years. If you think of the timeline in context, Landry had the domestic disturbance thing last year, so signing him long term wasn’t a great move. We shopped him, but we weren’t getting a great return last year. I think we wanted him back here, but not at a crazy price, and as I’ve said 1000X, I think what we offered was totally fair, but he made it clear he wanted Adams money which he totally sin’t worth, and now he got even more from CLE. I’m just glad we tagged him so we got something back, and that’s that. Like you say Tannehill doesn’t elevate our team, neither did Landry, not doing what he did here for 4 years, so I’m not going to cry over losing him. I think there are more moves to come, I hope we do some good things.

    Well
I guess we can take that cap $ and spend it on a Watkins or Robinson and have a pretty good trio of WRs again

I assume both will accept what we offered Landry or less

Higher ceilings than Landry but lesser players
Nowhere near as reliable but very talented
Not exactly slot guys but I not a believer in really limited roles

    • the more I think about it the more I’m thinking I’d rather they not go after Robinson in free agency and stick with what they’ve got and add thru the draft. I like what we’ve got in house right now and I’d love to see these guys get the opportunity to show what they can do. Add a guy like Kirk or Lazard, maybe a couple udfa’s or late rd guys like Weah and Ishamel and we could have a very good, young wr corps.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Lmao at Landry being bad for culture

You know what was bad for culture?
An OL who was doing cocaine before meetings and management having there head so far up their asses they didn’t realize it

The locker room does not need cleaning up
The front office might need it

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Yeah, didn’t they just do this when they canned Incognito? How man do they need before they have a ‘good’ locker room? I always thought coaches or player leaders were supposed to help with that anyway? Or some of these over priced FAs they kept bringing in?

  87. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’m not a fan of the argument that somehow the offense is going to get better without Landry

But if we signed a FA WR
    And Juwann James
And used those first 5 picks on offense: OG, TE1, TE2, RB and QB
I think we would be better offensively
If we had viable 2 TE offense that can move the ball and we have a pair a RB that can handle a lot of carries and received wrs that stretch the field – it can come together

But don’t not be surprised if that 11 pick is a qb

    • I don’t think it’s a forgone conclusion that the offense necessarily gets worse just because he’s gone either. I think the one thing that was holding the offense back was the scheme more than anything.

We came out with a completely different look against the Pats in the 2nd game and won and if we change our offense to have it more like what we saw in that game then it will be head and shoulders better than it was this past season.

My question is: why isn’t the offense more like this all season and where was that offense all year, including in the games that followed? Why did they pull that offense out for just one game and bag it for the remainder of the season?

So, if what we saw in that game is an indication of what we’re going to look like this year then we really aren’t going to miss having Landry on the team.

Won’t be a QB worth taking at 11. If we want a QB we have to move up and we don’t have enough ammo to do it

My fix for losing Landry, draft TE Gesicki in the second round, WR Gallup in the 4th and TE Smythe in the 6th. Like others have said, you may not have to even draft a WR.

Face it, we couldn’t keep Landry at his tag and 13.5 mil was not enough for him and his family. Don’t know how people are so upset at our FO when Landry was the one who made to where we couldn’t keep him. Later Jarvis, good luck to you bro and thanks for playing hard for us. I am moving on as well. Next man up!

Upset that they got such little compensation

And upset that the Quinn trade made the possibility of keeping him on the the tag for 18 impossible

Those are 2 bad decisions by the FO that have nothing to do with Landry asking for too much

Also – the only Jersey I have left

    Tannehill

So his time is about to come to an end

I know D-Bolt loves the Colly-Rado WR Michael Gallup. I’ve checked him out. He would be a good replacement for Landry, but I don’t think he’s going to go past RD 3. I would hate to use such a high pick on a WR, I’d rather like Lou said roll with what we got, or maybe bring in a couple of UDFA’s.
