2018 Miami Dolphins – Free Agency – DT’s

The official start day of NFL Free Agency starts today, and yet there were about 1000 players who were already gobbled up, and much to my surprise, the cap poor Dolphins were wheeling and dealing like nobody’s business.  I’m not sure I’ll ever understand what the plan is, I was pretty sure we were going to be quiet in FA, and we were out there banging like we had the same amount of cash available as the Jets and Browns.  One thing I do know, any thoughts the Dolphins were tearing this thing down and starting a 2-5 year rebuild has been quashed.  There’s no question now that we’re in it to win it, but have the moves we’ve made made us better?

We replaced a 25 year old fan favorite WR (Jarvis Landry) with another 25 year old WR (Albert Wilson) who has basically 1/4 of the amount of receptions Landry has.  We didn’t want to pay Landry near $16M per year, so we get a good deal on Wilson at $8M per.  Hold on, because then we sign 32 year old veteran slot WR Danny Amendola.  Huh?  He gets a 2 year contract for about $12M, with $8.25M guaranteed.   I think this signing pushed the Landry fans over the edge.  I get it, we couldn’t spend $15-16M on our own stud, so we replace him with Wilson and Amendola?    I can’t get inside information, but obviously Gase was not happy with our WR corps.  Forget Landry, I think he’s seriously worried about Parker and Carroo.  I think rightfully so, because Parker has yet to give us an elite season.  Why did Landry routinely have 100 receptions, and what should be our best WR (Parker) about half that?  Then you look at the guy we had to have in the 2016 draft and used 3 picks to get Leonte Carroo, who has given us 10 receptions in 2 seasons.  If this doesn’t explain why we now have 2 WR’s instead of one, nothing will.  Just so you all understand, i thought maybe we would address this in the draft, but I guess Gase wanted more proven commodities, and I get that.  We’ll have to wrap Amendola in the same bubble wrap we used for Pouncey in the preseason.

OK, now onto the big boys, the defensive tackles, because it sure seems like we’re gonna need one with the departure of Ndamukong Suh.  Here’s the 5 I think may help us, that is, if we have any money left to spend . . .

Dontari Poe  6’3 346  27YO

r289809_608x342_16-9

How do you replace a big man?  With an even bigger man!  Poe is huge at 346 lbs, and no, he’s not at the same level of Suh.  No one we sign in FA will be, but that’s not the point.  Not to insult anyone here, but say we bring in Poe at about $7M per year, he’s going to give us more than a 1/3 of the production of Suh, for a 1/3 of the price.  Poe was the 11th pick in the 2012 NFL draft, and played 5 seasons with the Chiefs.  He went to ATL last season on a 1YR deal, and is now a free agent.  He’s a big DT that clogs the middle, and in his best season in 2014 brought down opposing QB’s 6 times.  He;s not a real pass rush threat, more of a run stopper, and that works for me.  I think Poe would be ideal, but there’s a lot of other teams out there flush with cash, so we’ll see what happens.

******************************************************************************

Bennie Logan  6’2 309  28YO

636495778395078227-Bennie-Logan-2

I actually had Logan as one of guys I thought we should target last season, and now, like Poe, he’s also available because he only signed a 1 YR deal with the Chiefs.  Logan played the first 4 years of his career in Philadelphia, and he’s a guy that makes an awful lot of tackles.  Like Poe, he’s not a real pass rush threat, but he’s steady and can wrap up well, which makes him valuable to me.  Like Poe, he signed an $8M contract last year, and I expect he would be in the same neighborhood as Poe, and if Spotrac is accurate, they have Poe at $5.7M, which I inflated to $7M, and figure the same for Logan.

********************************************************************************

Clinton McDonald  6’1 290  31YO

AR-312089963

McDonald played in 14 games last season , starting 3 for the Tampa Bay Bucs, and managed to tally 5 sacks as part of the DL rotation.  At this stage of his career, he wouldn’t be a starter, but what we really need is either a starter, or a solid rotational guy, and I think McDonald would give us the latter.  McDonald has played the last 4 years with the Bucs, and in 2016, started 12 games, so he’s capable.

*********************************************************************************

Nick Fairley  6’5 291

nick-fairley-sack-ed515ee669e634c6

Fairley missed the entire 2017 season with a heart condition.  He was released by the Saints with an NFI designation due to that condition.  Apparently, Fairley feels he’s ready to return to the NFL, and would obviously need to pass a physical in order to be eligible to play.  The former 1st RD pick in 2011 (13th overall), Fairley actually had his best season in 2016, logging 6.5 sacks for the Saints.  Always a pass rushing threat, he played 4 seasons for Detroit before signing with the Rams, and then the Saints. Obviously, it’s an odd situation with him having the heart issue, but if he’s cleared, he would be a pass rushing threat from the interior we could certainly use.

***********************************************************************************

Tom Johnson  6’3 295  33YO

nfl_g_johnson01jr_C_600x400

Johnson has obviously been around, but Johnson played in all 16 games last season for the Vikes starting 15.  He was fairly productive notching 32 tackles and 2 sacks.  It would be nice to put another stud in the lineup, but a solid guy in the rotation would suffice too. I would think he would be a 1 year contract, and that’s fine, because we have some young guys that are up and coming, Godchaux especially, but Vincent Taylor also flashed, so this is just a stop gap.

*************************************************************************************

Kyle Williams, Chris Baker and Star Lotuleilei all signed contracts already, so this is what’s left.  It’s not especially pretty once you get past Poe, but some of these guys are certainly serviceable.  We may also dragft a DT early if the draft falls that way, like Da’Ron Payne or Vita Vea.  Second RD option for me at least could be Harrison Phillips.  If there are any DT’s you feel I should have mentioned, gimme a shout.

They may not restructure RT. If they draft a QB early and that QB beats him out, they will want to trade RT. If they don’t restructure it limits his cap hit to this year.

  4. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’ve gotta think that with Nigel Bradham re-signing with the Eagles, coupled with the $cratch we’d have to spend on Tahir Whitehead, that the bulls-eye on Roquan Smith’s back just got that much larger for us.

  5. D's avatar D says:

If they are going to cut Suh they should just cut him, the June 1st designation does nothing for us. If we cut him right now we save 4mil, which is nearly enough to pay for the draft class and we wouldn’t carry over 13 mil to next year. If we cut his as a post June 1st, we have 0 to use as a buffer to make moves right now, and we still wind up in the hole by 1 mil, same as we would if we cut him this year. 17 mil – 5mil for draft class = 12mil carry over -13 mil next year means -1 mil next year at the beginning of the year. How does that help anything to roll it down the line, when we cant evn use the 17mil this year. I guess they might be thinking there will be some pst draft cuts they could spend it on, but unless they got plans for that, i dont understand a post June 1st designation.

    • D's avatar D says:

Thats also why i dont understand not pushing to trade him, we weren’t going to cap fuck ourselves by trading him, since the post June shit doesn’t really net us anything.

  6. drg's avatar drg says:

I liked the moves yesterday. If someone could just take the trade button away from Tannenbaum things would go so much more smoothly in the offseason.

  7. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

AT THE MOMENT… and IF we sit @ R1P11, these are the guys I suspect we’d select:

    – Baker Mayfield or Josh Allen, should either fall to us
    – Roquan Smith
    – Tremaine Edmunds
    – Vita Vea
    – DaRon Payne

In short, a QB, a LB or a DT.

    ————————————–
Trade value will be down if they go that route. We wont ned him and they will know that, there also will be a lot less of teams trying to figure out what their plan is for next year by then, as they will already have drafted and spent in FA. Our best chance to get a good return on him is now, well the best time has already passed but the best remaining is now and ever moment past now it drops. Trade deadline would be the next time it might be back up to a decent level.

    • D's avatar D says:

Also, if we were to trade him now, we may also be eliminating another team that could be in competition with us for a draft pick and we would have more draft capital to make a move up.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Do you know for a fact that we haven’t been trying to trade him?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Honestly, I don’t want him to be our #1 TE, and he doesn’t block, and he will be too expensive not to be your #1, so I think I would pass. I would much rather have him than go with Julius Thomas or A.J. Derby, but if it was him or drafting Gesicki, Hurst or Goedert, I’d take the latter.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

He is young and got drafted high in the first for a reason though, even if wasn’t for his blocking. Not sure what his price will be, but should be south of the $8 mil they cut him to save.

Stanger – If we sign Ebron, then we won’t draft a TE early, and that’s a huge mistake. He’s a decent receiver, not a game changer.

Come on Lou you know there is a lot of misinformation flying around this time of year. I dont necessarily think super covert operations go down as part of them, but there are definitely things leaked on purpose to the chatty Cathy reporters so they can spin things one way or the other.

  52. D's avatar D says:

This is basicall the choice we had as a pre June cut and post June cut. Pre June 1 4mil cap savings, nothing for next year. We have 4 mil to use to work with right now, meaning if we needed to we could cut into the 4 to get the deal done and then cleared up more by maing additional moves (restructures and/or cuts). As a post June 1st designation we get 17mil in cap, but this is not available to us until after June 1st. This is after FA has ended and after draft has concluded. It therefore can be used to cover the draftees salaries, but or to pick up late castoffs from teams that may have drafted a replacement for a vet they had under contract. It helps us none right now though with player negotiations that we might need the extra wiggle on. Also that 17mil in savings is costing us 13mil next year. I just dont see how a post June 1st gives us anything to be happy about.

  53. D's avatar D says:

Im not worried about what Suh brings to the Patriots team. I personally dont see him as a Belichick type player. Im worried that for 60ish snaps twice a year he can break our QB, and thats a real fear to have lol.

BBM, the June 1st designation dones really save us 17mil, it saves us 4, the same as cutting now, we are just deferring 13mil of it to next year. On top of that, he is clear to sign with a team right now, he doesnt have to wait, AND the 17mil we saved, isnt applied as savings to our cap until June 2nd, so its of no use to us this FA period.

Includes: “Tannehill’s cap number goes from $19.8 million this year to approximately $8.6 million. The Dolphins are saving $11.2 million in cap space with the move.”

Still want to sign “one veteran free agent offensive lineman — likely a guard. The Dolphins want to add that player to an offensive line that already includes left tackle Laremy Tunsil, center Mike Pouncey, James at right tackle, and Ted Larsen and Jesse Davis competing for a starting guard spot.”

    • D's avatar D says:

I think its going to be Sitton and probably on a 1-2 year contract. That also means they should be in the market for a OG/OC to backup on the interior of the OL and be a potential next year replacement for Pouncey, who i think is getting close to wanting to retire. A degenerative hip condition means he needs to cut his career short so he can enjoy life after football and before he cant get around too well. Id expect a early selection of a player who has spent time as an OC. Id prefer Wynn myself, but he might go as early as the 1st so it would probably not be him.

He did it with Sanchez and now he did it with Tannehill. We’re locked in with Tannehill now yippee.

We’re gonna suck so bad, you’ll hear the sucking sound here in Orlando.

I dunno Son they only turned 11.2 into signing bonus it looks like, which would mean he would still be cap savings next year if they would want to cut him. I think if you go back and look at what i had suggested for him a few months back as far as a restructure it would be pretty close to this, i think i was going to save us about 10mil with the restructure and it didn’t really guarantee him being here much more than just 2018, which is already a lock.

If they believe Quinn is healthy they should be looking to restructure and extend his contract to add more years and get the per year hit down some.

I actually think Denver could be out of the running for QB this year, with their first round pick i mean. They might still take a guy later, but i think they are going to use their 1st on something else. Maybe Quinten Nelson.

Stanger, that’s what a restructure is all about, man. And for the record… it doesn’t need player approval.
    ——————————–
Yeah it does. Its a legally binding contract that’s being altered. That has to be agreed upon by the player, or at least the guy with power of attorney to agree to those changes. Honey badger didn’t agree to his, and now he is a FA, because that’s the only other choice a team has if the player refuses.

So the 4 million cap relief they get on June 1 for cutting Suh, could that be used for signing the upcoming draft class? Say, wait until June first to sign the draftees, and then use the $$$ you *would have* used on signing them pre June 1st, for getting FA players now? Kind of like a shell game?

  82. D's avatar D says:

Son i dont think Mayfield is necessarily the QB they will have a shot at but i think a QB is their target now in the 1st. They should have created more draft capital though if they were planning on getting one because i am sure that there are going to be some trade ups to get ahead of us.

I think the Browns and Jets are a lock to select a QB before us. I think the Bills are positioning themselves to move ahead of us as well. Thats still puts us in the running for one of the top 4. To me there are still wildcards ahead of us like Indy, Denver, and TB who, while i think unlikely at this point to select one, might pull the trigger. I think we really need to be in the top 6 to solidify our chances of taking one.

The Chargers and Cardinals might also be dark horses to move up too but we have better draft capital than they do so we should be able to outbid them.

D, absolutely need to be top 6 for a QB. I think we’re faking wanting a QB to get teams to want to move up. We sit tight and get a , I don’t know, a position player. After all we do have Fales in the Rolodex. Tannehill is locked in.

  93. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

The amount is irrelevant we could have committed to Landry and chose not to and he knew that a long time ago. Herd mentioned his legal issues last year as possibly preventing a deal so maybe that did get in the way but if he felt wanted much earlier they could have done a deal. To me that’s the confounding part is that we had one of our own who’s been nothing but great and we didn’t want him.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I kind of explained at least why I think it happened. I think Gase was really unhappy with his WR corps. I don’t think he trusts Parker, and I also think he’s really down on Carroo. I don’t think he thinks Grant will hold up, or maybe he’ll be exposed if they use him too much. He could have went into the draft and got a WR or two, but I think he wants to fix this now, so if he signed Landry for 415-16M a season, he wouldn’t have been able to accomplish that. I’m sure if he loved Landry, it might have been different, but I don’t think that was the case. I think he looked at his limitations and strengths, and decided it was better not to pay him so much

      • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

If you don’t like Parker and Caroo get rid of Parker and Caroo. I’ll stick with the guy who makes one handed circus catches and knocks guys on their ass as a blocker.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Son — I wanted to keep him as well, but the amount has to come into play. Not your money or mine, but we both love a team that has to live with a salary cap. And three years guaranteed is off the charts for a wideout.

      • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

We’ve already cleared up enough space to have easily kept him. And still got these two new guys. He shouldn’t have been a now decision it should have been done a while back.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Agree that the time to strike was last year….am sure he would have like a big old bonus payment. But then they didn’t while they did for say Jones before he was up. Might be a number of reasons why not, and some of those fall on Landry and some of them on the FO. Who knows?

    • D's avatar D says:

Regardles of the should we shouldnt we have kept him, i think we all are locked pretty solidly on those positions, my biggest beef right now is the inept strategies they did with their moves.

You dont put yourself in a over the cap situation and then try to make trades, it doesn’t give you any leverage especially with a “got to be below cap” looming. Now, if you cleared up enough cap that you have plenty of room then try to make the trade, fine, that makes sense, you maintain your leverage on the compensation, but the other way around its pretty much a here is what i’m offering take it or leave it situation. Also, you could have got a 2019 3rd almost guaranteed if ya just let him hit FA, you can trade conditionally a 3rd in 2019 for a packaged with picks from this year to do things in this draft, why not let him hit FA and just take your comp pick? You still get rid of him, you still get something for him, so they just dont come off as though through well.

With the Suh thing, sure they know you are going to cut him, you let that shit dangle out there so damn early that you lost any leverage from that, but you still have the leverage of “get him before anyone else has a shot at him” and they dont because they want to June 1st designate him, which does us 0 good in the long run. Im past the players leaving, i dont approve of either of them, but what bothers me most is the trade and the cut really didn’t help our team nearly as much as moves with the same outcome could have.
