2018 Miami Dolphins – Free Agency – DT’s

The official start day of NFL Free Agency starts today, and yet there were about 1000 players who were already gobbled up, and much to my surprise, the cap poor Dolphins were wheeling and dealing like nobody’s business.  I’m not sure I’ll ever understand what the plan is, I was pretty sure we were going to be quiet in FA, and we were out there banging like we had the same amount of cash available as the Jets and Browns.  One thing I do know, any thoughts the Dolphins were tearing this thing down and starting a 2-5 year rebuild has been quashed.  There’s no question now that we’re in it to win it, but have the moves we’ve made made us better?

We replaced a 25 year old fan favorite WR (Jarvis Landry) with another 25 year old WR (Albert Wilson) who has basically 1/4 of the amount of receptions Landry has.  We didn’t want to pay Landry near $16M per year, so we get a good deal on Wilson at $8M per.  Hold on, because then we sign 32 year old veteran slot WR Danny Amendola.  Huh?  He gets a 2 year contract for about $12M, with $8.25M guaranteed.   I think this signing pushed the Landry fans over the edge.  I get it, we couldn’t spend $15-16M on our own stud, so we replace him with Wilson and Amendola?    I can’t get inside information, but obviously Gase was not happy with our WR corps.  Forget Landry, I think he’s seriously worried about Parker and Carroo.  I think rightfully so, because Parker has yet to give us an elite season.  Why did Landry routinely have 100 receptions, and what should be our best WR (Parker) about half that?  Then you look at the guy we had to have in the 2016 draft and used 3 picks to get Leonte Carroo, who has given us 10 receptions in 2 seasons.  If this doesn’t explain why we now have 2 WR’s instead of one, nothing will.  Just so you all understand, i thought maybe we would address this in the draft, but I guess Gase wanted more proven commodities, and I get that.  We’ll have to wrap Amendola in the same bubble wrap we used for Pouncey in the preseason.

OK, now onto the big boys, the defensive tackles, because it sure seems like we’re gonna need one with the departure of Ndamukong Suh.  Here’s the 5 I think may help us, that is, if we have any money left to spend . . .

Dontari Poe  6’3 346  27YO

r289809_608x342_16-9

How do you replace a big man?  With an even bigger man!  Poe is huge at 346 lbs, and no, he’s not at the same level of Suh.  No one we sign in FA will be, but that’s not the point.  Not to insult anyone here, but say we bring in Poe at about $7M per year, he’s going to give us more than a 1/3 of the production of Suh, for a 1/3 of the price.  Poe was the 11th pick in the 2012 NFL draft, and played 5 seasons with the Chiefs.  He went to ATL last season on a 1YR deal, and is now a free agent.  He’s a big DT that clogs the middle, and in his best season in 2014 brought down opposing QB’s 6 times.  He;s not a real pass rush threat, more of a run stopper, and that works for me.  I think Poe would be ideal, but there’s a lot of other teams out there flush with cash, so we’ll see what happens.

******************************************************************************

Bennie Logan  6’2 309  28YO

636495778395078227-Bennie-Logan-2

I actually had Logan as one of guys I thought we should target last season, and now, like Poe, he’s also available because he only signed a 1 YR deal with the Chiefs.  Logan played the first 4 years of his career in Philadelphia, and he’s a guy that makes an awful lot of tackles.  Like Poe, he’s not a real pass rush threat, but he’s steady and can wrap up well, which makes him valuable to me.  Like Poe, he signed an $8M contract last year, and I expect he would be in the same neighborhood as Poe, and if Spotrac is accurate, they have Poe at $5.7M, which I inflated to $7M, and figure the same for Logan.

********************************************************************************

Clinton McDonald  6’1 290  31YO

AR-312089963

McDonald played in 14 games last season , starting 3 for the Tampa Bay Bucs, and managed to tally 5 sacks as part of the DL rotation.  At this stage of his career, he wouldn’t be a starter, but what we really need is either a starter, or a solid rotational guy, and I think McDonald would give us the latter.  McDonald has played the last 4 years with the Bucs, and in 2016, started 12 games, so he’s capable.

*********************************************************************************

Nick Fairley  6’5 291

nick-fairley-sack-ed515ee669e634c6

Fairley missed the entire 2017 season with a heart condition.  He was released by the Saints with an NFI designation due to that condition.  Apparently, Fairley feels he’s ready to return to the NFL, and would obviously need to pass a physical in order to be eligible to play.  The former 1st RD pick in 2011 (13th overall), Fairley actually had his best season in 2016, logging 6.5 sacks for the Saints.  Always a pass rushing threat, he played 4 seasons for Detroit before signing with the Rams, and then the Saints. Obviously, it’s an odd situation with him having the heart issue, but if he’s cleared, he would be a pass rushing threat from the interior we could certainly use.

***********************************************************************************

Tom Johnson  6’3 295  33YO

nfl_g_johnson01jr_C_600x400

Johnson has obviously been around, but Johnson played in all 16 games last season for the Vikes starting 15.  He was fairly productive notching 32 tackles and 2 sacks.  It would be nice to put another stud in the lineup, but a solid guy in the rotation would suffice too. I would think he would be a 1 year contract, and that’s fine, because we have some young guys that are up and coming, Godchaux especially, but Vincent Taylor also flashed, so this is just a stop gap.

*************************************************************************************

Kyle Williams, Chris Baker and Star Lotuleilei all signed contracts already, so this is what’s left.  It’s not especially pretty once you get past Poe, but some of these guys are certainly serviceable.  We may also dragft a DT early if the draft falls that way, like Da’Ron Payne or Vita Vea.  Second RD option for me at least could be Harrison Phillips.  If there are any DT’s you feel I should have mentioned, gimme a shout.

I kind of think it’s funny (wake release) but only bx I already saw the rest of you react to it

  2. The Flying Pig says:

Would be really funny if wale signed an extension than asked for a release

  3. Rockphin says:

I couln’t find that picture Bat used to post, but I did find this one. Anyone want to play “Caption this”

  4. The Flying Pig says:

oD in reply to you last post (before page turn)

That movie is great – I don’t know if you saw earlier today but we signed a very good OG and traded for a center

So you finally got your wish

Good article from Mando. Gives insight into everything that went on today.

    • mf13ss says:

I don’t understand why SO many are SO sour on Armando. He calls it right, WAY more often than not, despite ‘fan-boys’ disagreeing with him on a nearly constant basis.

      • Tim Knight says:

He has great sources and when he reports what went down, I like him. It’s when he throws in snarky remarks and hunts for the negative spins he gets on my nerves.

  6. stangerx says:

Not sure if this is politics or US magazine stuff, but it is of note. And they have five kids who I feel real sorry for.

“Vanessa Trump filed for divorce from her husband, Donald Trump Jr., on Thursday afternoon, according to multiple reports.”

    • Rockphin says:

      HUH

    • Tim Knight says:

      They’re only human.

    • mf13ss says:

I’m here for football, not for political tabloids. And even IF true, WAY more than 50% of the American populous files for divorce: thus, your post is irrelevant.

What… does that prove Russian collusion? Why even post that here, my buddy?

      • Rockphin says:

why not? I scroll past TONS of Mets crap on here… LOL 😉

It not political unless you make it so. Right now it’s just Celebrity news with well wishes for their kids.

      • stangerx says:

M13 — that’s a bit harsh dude. Don Jr. is a public figure. Nothing more and nothing less than reporting what I just read. And you do know I am a conservative type I hope.

Got ya! And so, I suppose you REALLY don’t like Omar!!! LOL 😉 😀

    • Tim Knight says:

I go to Omar for any info. he has and I do think he’s right on some things, and way off in some other land about other stuff. I go to Mando more than Omar, but I really go to whoever has intel – as in what’s happening, not what they think about it.

I just don’t understand how Donald Trump Jr and the White House has anything to do with football.

Stanger is one of my favorite posters (and always HAS BEEN from the JUMP!), I just don’t like where he’s going or what he’s getting at with his above post.

    Keep it football, Bro.

    • mf13ss says:

I don’t think he was looking to start a political conversation. Lets all move along and ponder our new OL as of now with mindless amazement. 🙂

I was thinking more RB than FB, I like some but haven’t studied any.

  17. Tim Knight says:

How about a fucking cheers and a salute and a fist pump and a high five for John Denney’s career. What he’s done is pretty friggin impressive. You only think about a long-snapper when you don’t have a good one. As fans we don’t even worry about that shit. Haven’t for 14 years.

4.83/40 is a limited role player. He’s not going to find the open space he did in college.
    Reply

Landry only ran a 4.77 at the combine….

Don’t dis Flowers (well, really you can if you want, )

    • Tim Knight says:

Yes but he pulled up with a hammy. He ran a sub 4.6 at his pro day. I was referring to Flowers as a RB in a reply to Randy. Maybe he’d be a good FB if we want one, but I don’t see big numbers from him as a rusher or receiver in the NFL.

  19. Rockphin says:

What? Is Denney retiring or something?

  20. Mike E. says:

The Henne pic is at the top of the page, last picture after the article

  21. Mike E. says:

  22. Mike E. says:

“Henne just pawn in game of football”

  23. Tim Knight says:

The phrase “mindless amazement” cracks me up every time. You don’t even know what your amazed about. LOL

  24. wyoming85 says:

Flowers only scores a bunch of TD’s ?
Who the fuck needs any of them?????? 😉

    • Tim Knight says:

Wyo, big jump at the next level. I’m not rooting against him or anything but don’t be shocked if he’s limited at the next level. I looked into him because some of you keep talking about him and drafting him. LOL

I see Flowers as a role player but if he can do a lot of jobs and play STs he could be one of those guys you like having on your team.

      • wyoming85 says:

        I agree about the jump!

But it’s not like he played @ Alcon State!

      • Tim Knight says:

I’m not sure it matters where you play these days. I’m jaded by the competition in college football. It’s very skewed.

  25. ElephantRider says:

I miss Volin too. Enjoyed seeing his break down of plays from previous week. Nobody does it now

Until you reallise we just had a quarter without a penalty?????

      • Tim Knight says:

Grasshopper, sometimes the butterfly fly away.

The mantra I got from Gase and the FO after the season was, we’re not doing this the same way next year.

      • The Flying Pig says:

        Yeah Tim I get that

But there is a fine line between knee jerk reaction to meaningful change

Anyway I’m glad they prioritized OL with the $ – I’m so tired of talking about OL

  29. Rockphin says:

Oh, we resigned Denney… Dilly Dilly

I love seeing him make the tackle on punts.

  30. wyoming85 says:

Piggy do you need 50 bucks for a new jersey?

  31. Randy says:

    Tim,
I like Flowers as a FB. He kind of reminds me of Byars.

    • naplesfan2010 says:

you know I thought that as well … i think he would be fun to have and all, but i just dont think Gase has a roster spot for that role, unless as Tim said he could be a ST tackler FG blocker.

It would be nice to have Lousaka Polite level short yardage success again.

  32. naplesfan2010 says:

never mind the car joke…too much time passed.
PS: I really don’t get how to put a pic in here.
Sometimes it works like a charm and others…total disaster.

  33. Rockphin says:

I do not like that Ajayi is gone. I enjoyed rooting for him. I’m saddened that Landry is gone. I enjoyed rooting for him. Suh is gone too…. … um, anyway, I am still a Dolphins fan and will root for the next guy up. Most likely my favorite UDFA this season. Dolphins Rock Man!

  34. Randy says:

    Puppybabymonkey

  38. Rockphin says:

    Prettywittypiggy

  39. Tim Knight says:

Piggy, I don’t think anything was knee jerk. I think the org sat down with probably some input from new coaches and said, this isn’t working. A lot of it was about results, production vs. dollars. It wasn’t adding up. Not so much Landry on his 2nd rd deal, but having to pay him like an elite WR when the production wasn’t there. The team walked away from all of that. People have their opinions about Tannehill and I don’t want to get into that, but he is part of the next phase.

The team is still fluid and we’re not at end of FA or at the draft yet. Then after that, the fact is we’ve never seen this new team play. So we’re so far off from knowing whether what we did was right or wrong.

I’m just going with the flow and commenting on each move but I have no idea whether we’re better, worse or indifferent. Too early. The team will not remain the same. 😉

  40. Rockphin says:

I should probably say Nogtih all, I’ve been drinking.

  43. Rockphin says:

I will leave you with this

    Nogtih all

  44. Rockphin says:

I will let you guys draft Mayfield if we can draft Flowers.

  45. Tim Knight says:

I have to say I like setting up for the draft where we simply take the best player on our board. We can line up and play today. Except we have to find a kicker. LOL

Seriously, I know we need upgrades and some better depth at some positions, but adding the BPA in the draft makes your roster better. Don’t pass on greatness because of abundance and reach for need. Are we abundant anywhere where if a special prospect falls to us that we can’t take him?

    • Rockphin says:

yeah, it’s nice to suck so bad at every position that you almost have to upgrade no matter what you pick….Oh, wait, that’s not what you are saying. LOL 😉

Note the LOL and Winky Eye

    Not enough to take Mayfield!

  49. Tim Knight says:

For the record, I’m not all about taking Mayfield. However I do think we may be active for a QB 1-3.

I could also see us trading down, adding more picks and taking the BPA on our board. We’ve made that a possibility with the moves we’ve made.

  50. Tim Knight says:

Pouncey’s story doesn’t make sense. You miss a lot of time the last few years being paid as a top center, make it through 2017 and start every game on an OL that has been ridiculed for years, then look for a raise? WTF was that all about?

  51. Tim Knight says:

Outside of BPA, needs to me is a fucking TE, backup QB, better depth on the OL and at RB, and a kicker. Oh yeah an upgrade at LB would be awesome but I think of it as more of a want than a need.

    His quote was posted earlier.
    ———
    I didn’t see it.

  53. mf13ss says:

The way I understand it, Pouncey was asked to restructure his contract… he’d get paid his guaranteed $$$ upfront, instead of later.

He didn’t ask for a pay raise, and he balked at getting more $$$ upfront. Instead, he asked for his outright release.

  54. Tim Knight says:

Bottom line, Gase was done with same ole same old. Say he can’t handle alphas all you want. It’s not like we’re breaking up a perennial playoff team.

    Has Grier tempered Tannenbaum?

  55. Tim Knight says:

M13, okay. What’s done is done. It will all be tallied up in the results. Just roll with it and see it for why. I get it! But W/L record trumps everything. 😉

  56. ElephantRider says:

Funny….everyone says the team stinks. Make changes and they are all the good players? Seems to me they all stink together. Haven’t won shit with them so great….
If they suck ass this year we prob get to blow it completely up. Yay!

  57. naplesfan2010 says:

    Kevin Patra wrote:
Pouncey, who had three years remaining on his contract, told Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post he requested his release because his request for a raise in a long-term deal wasn’t granted.

“I gave this city everything I had,” Pouncey told Schad. “I’m heartbroken.”

Pouncey added that he plans on continuing his playing career after seven seasons with the team that drafted him in the first round in 2011.

“At the end of the day I’m a Miami Dolphin for life. I think it was awesome,” he said. “I had a hell of a ride here. We’ll see what the next chapter is.”

Cutting Pouncey saves the Dolphins $7 million on the salary cap.

    ______________________________
They need a quarterback of the future no matter how you look at it. Whether you believe Tannehill is the guy going forward or not, the fact is that if he goes down again this season he’s done. So they can’t keep relying on backups to come in and fill in for him. They need to draft a quarterback this year, even if it’s after the first rd, who they believe can be the guy going forward if something were to happen to Tannehill. The quarterback position is too important to continue to put all your eggs in one basket and not draft someone else who you feel is capable of coming in taking over like you need them to.

So, it’s not about whether or not you think Tannehill can do the job going forward. It’s about securing the future of the team at the position because if he goes down again you don’t want to be in a position to have to go out and find a quarterback to replace him.

  59. This offseason is going almost like I wanted. The gut job. Suh gone. Landry gone. Pouncey gone. it needed to be done. “Trim the fat” like Jared Odrick was so fond of saying.

You need a team of players who play for the team; not play for themselves. The offensive line should be better going forward, the defensive line looks to be in good shape. We still have some needs at some positions but it’s looking better than it has in some time.

It doesn’t appear that we went out and signed any players like a Bushrod or a Timmons that were signed just to fill in a spot. We got some solid guys who, even if they only play for a couple of seasons, can actually help us instead of just getting some stop gaps like we are used to seeing.

  60. http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/miami-dolphins/cap/2019/

this is 2019 estimated cap right now and when you look at it in terms of the % of cap each player is receiving it’s a lot better than what it was at the start of this season. THIS is what cap management should look like; not those bloated contracts where you’ve got 3 guys taking up a huge chunk of cap space.

the new signees are at the bottom and their salaries aren’t included yet so the cap space isn’t adjusted yet for them but it’s a lot more manageable than it used to be.

  61. If my boy Melvin Island could be had on the cheap I would love to see them take a shot at him. Yeah we have Lippett coming back and Howard and Tank in there but you can never have enough good cb’s. He would be a nice addition if we could get him.

  62. naplesfan2010 says:

sorry to interrrupt the flow Lou, but this was posted after Amendola left NE.
    Paul yesterday
I’ve been a Patriot fan since 1960, and the team has been through a lot, to get to finally be successful. We saw Darryl Stingley lose his mobility, for a game that didn’t count. We saw players that gave what they had, to obtain
the chance to play in a Super Bowl, only to see one chance after another get wiped away by an infamous penalty, or injury in a crucial situation. We saw teams finally make it to the promised land, only to lose to both the Bears, and the Packers, but unlike the coach who wouldn’t even fly home with the team after that last loss, we hung in there. We saw Drew Bledsoe
give all he had to that very same coach, only to have almost no respect given in return, but he hung in there. And in a disheartening moment when
Drew was giving all he had on that fateful run, he hung in there with the team and got a winning start in the playoffs, knowing as we all did when we finally won, that the reigns had been passed. Then this winning thing was amazing. We got and stayed so good for so long, with a super owner, coach, quarterback, and supporting team. Players came and players left, many times without understanding, but we hung in there. I really feel that when this last Super Bowl played out as it did, the fans and players alike, asked ourselves, “Really? After ALL we’ve been through, through our entire history, and the sacrifice so many have made in blood, sweat, tears and pain, not to mention the “modest” pay, it’s all gonna come to a coach throwing it all away out of principal?” How can you expect to ask these guys to give all that they have, for all of these years, with all the work that
had to be done this year, only to watch the coach stand there and watch us bleed to death, “never to lift a hand”? Pretty hard to hang in there any longer!

  63. wyoming85 says:

  64. Mike E. says:

So basically Pouncey wanted an insurance policy of maybe $20M guaranteed that he would happily collect after saying he needs to retire, the pain in his hips is so severe, he just can’t play anymore. Thanks for the new contract though!

Glad we didn’t fall for that

    • D says:

I feel pretty certain he would retire after next year. If I was him I would just do it now. Jumping in on a new team at what very likely is just a couple years of solid play in you future. Sounds like he is heading for going out on the bottom of a career not while you still have you health and pride.

  65. D says:

Was looking at a site that listed all teams and their FA moves including trade tracking back to Alex Smit to the skins and TBH and TBVS we have made what feels to me the most solid moves this off-season. Now I’m not including in that the distaste I have for how they did some of them, but just off of the list this guy but add this one, pretty solid moves

  66. D says:

    HTDCOPM TOIA LOL

  67. Mike E. says:

So Josh Rosen says he’s the draft’s most accurate passer.

  68. Mike E. says:

    FYPMSUJTBCWTN

  69. Mike E. says:

Ken – So are you saying Mayfield’s completion pct. which is much higher than Rosen’s is due to lesser competition?

    • Ken says:

No. I think it’s more of a result of the spread offense run by Oklahoma. UCLA pushes the ball downfield more in a traditional pro style offense. Also Oklahoma has great talent on offense around Mayfield. UCLA not so much

      • Mike E. says:

Isn’t that pretty much what we’ll be doing here though? We have 3 WR so often, and 4 and even 5 WR sets, and operating from the shotgun pretty often too.

      • Ken says:

That’s why Tannehill has such high % of completions when he is not the most accurate passer in the league. But we don’t run a spread offense and we don’t have Oklahoma’s talent relative to the rest of our competition. Watch the bowl game between Georgia and Oklahoma. When Mayfield was forced to put the ball into a tight space he struggled. Rozen doesn’t have that problem.

  70. Ken says:

    Phelon:
Relying on college stats is not a good method of scouting for pro prospects. There is such a wide discrepancy between levels of competition, recruiting and different offenses that just don’t work in the pros that college stats really don’t mean that much. It is more about projection of skill set at the next level. That is why I think Josh Allen is the best QB in this draft or why Carson Wentz was when he came out. Their stats were nothing special but their athletic skills sets were. So yes I do think Mayfield’s completion % is overrated in terms of how projects as a pro

  71. wyoming85 says:

  72. Mike E. says:

Ken – Not to belabor the discussion, but your response to me confirms my lesser competition question. It’s not the offense, it’s the talent of OKL compared to the teams they play against. That’s fine, I just wanted to know why you feel that way.

    • Ken says:

I still think it is more a result of system than anything else. Both Oklahoma and UCLA play in competitive conferences. Oklahoma has more talent than UCLA so it is not the competition but his own team imo

      • The Flying Pig says:

OK has had that system for a while now and no one has produced like Mayfield

OK also doesn’t really have any prior qbs who have been busts in the nfl in recent years

Both bradford and Landry Jones have been able to find success In the league – Modest success, but it’s not quite RG3 system territory

I get your concern about system – but I don’t think a Mayfield is a product of the OK system

  73. wyoming85 says:

    Finally! something news worthy!

  74. The Flying Pig says:

I don’t care too much about raw stats for qbs like yards or TDS

But I do care about comp % and interceptions

If into are high or % is low in college – it doesn’t usually get better in the pros

I really have a problem with both Lamar Jackson and zjosh Allens comp %

The thing about those two is they have amazing physical qualities
But I feel better about Josh Allen than Jackson bc his qualities are more related to his skills as a passer –

I know he goes top 10
    Maybe even 1

But I think he should be late first or 2nd rounder
I think he needs a lot of time

  75. wyoming85 says:

  76. Ken says:

Just so people don’t think I am biased against Mayfield. I am an OU college football fan. They became my favorite college team when my brother went to get his PhD there. I went to a number of games there during the Bradford and DeMarco Murray days. I have been a fan ever since. I watch OU every chance I get. I like Mayfield. I thought he rightfully deserved the Heisman trophy. However, I don’t think his skill set is up to the level of talent that translates well at the next level. I don’t think he will necessarily bust but I don’t think he will boom either

  77. Mike E. says:

Ken – Are you no longer in pain, or are you toughing it out because you want to get addicted?

    • Ken says:

Combination of both. I still have pain and discomfort but it is more manageable. I will take Tylenol on occasion or Tylenol pm at night but I didn’t want to be addicted to the Hydrocodone and you can feel the cravings starting so that is when I said time to stop.

    • The Flying Pig says:

He just gets angrier and bigger with the pain

      He has Gamma blood

    • D says:

Hydrocodone specifically but Oxycodone to some extent as well weakens the heart muscles if used for a prolonged period of time or abused for even a moderately short amount of time. Its a good idea to break the habit as soon as you can manage it. You do need to stay on them long enough to tolerate the pain though because stress from chronic pain is very detrimental to healing and your overall health too so i would say if you still find yourself anything above a 3 on a 10 point scale taking just the Tylenol, you might want to cut the dosage but you may still need those big boy ones.

  78. Mike E. says:

Ken – I figured it was probably a combo – Smart man. The last thing you need is pain med addiction now.

  79. The Flying Pig says:

Tannebaum must be asleep after working the phones for the last 72 hours bc instead of discussing new moves we are discussing how to evaluate WBs

  80. The Flying Pig says:

Some of you will be happy to know that wedge 👽 is about to starts doscussing TEs and LBs

There is really on 1 RB and maybe a couple of DTs I think I will look at other than LBs and TEs

  82. mf13ss says:

IF I understand this correctly — that Tannehill’s new cap # for this year is $8.7M after restructuring — and if/when we sign Quinn to a new deal or restructure him… the highest paid Dolphin for the ’18 season will be ANDRE BRANCH @ $10M.

I’m sorry, but Andre Branch should NOT be the highest paid Dolphin for the ’18 season… he’s not THAT good. I’ve gotta think that this is going to change at some point.

    • Mike E. says:

He’s not that good, but it’s not really important whether his cap hit this year is the highest, especially because we restructured a bunch of contracts. I wouldn’t worry about it. You don’t want to restructure everyone, that kills the cap for next season

      • mf13ss says:

I’m not really worried about it, I’m just looking at the situation as a possible clue of what we may do next… and we are rather crowded at the DE position. We won’t cut him, for we’d have to swallow another $11.9M in dead cap.

    • The Flying Pig says:

Queu the “there is nothing wrong with branch’s contract” reply

      Yes Branch is solid
But it was always a bad contract

They need to take steps to change that number and when you consider the depth at DE and the moves we made recently, a change seems imminent

      Maybe Kiko too

I accepted the Tannehill, Suh contracts as necessary
But the Pouncey, Branch and Kiki contracts – I’m not a fan of

Pouncey is already fixed. Let’s see what happens with Branch and Kiko

Piggy – If you cut Branch, that’s a different story, or ask him to take a pay cut, and redo his contract, that’s fine, but restructuring doesn’t make sense. I’m fine with either of those things, I’m not a Branch defender, and now that we have substantial depth, I don’t mind cutting him.

  87. drg says:

I rip on Tannenbaum all the time, but credit is due. Great job so far. Loved the OL moves yesterday. He even pulled of a great trade!

I’d prefer we stay away from overpaying a TE. The guys available just aren’t worth the money. Wait it out and sign a guy to a one year deal. Address it in the draft.

  88. Mike E. says:

M – Dolphins proved they swallow! lol

  89. stangerx says:

“He could be in the mix to be the second pick, or he could drop down to No. 11. There is a polarization with that particular evaluation and a lot of mixed options. I could have put him at No. 6 to the Jets, and I don’t think anybody would have been questioning that. Instead I put him at No. 11 to the Dolphins, and it raised some eyebrows.”

    — Kiper on Josh Rosen

  90. drg says:

    Pig,

The idea was that Kiko, Branch, Jones, Stills, and others were team leaders and worth overpaying to keep around. Not sure I agreed, but the concept made some sense. Obviously that hasn’t been the case. They picked up Branch from Jax for nothing and got a solid season out of him. Why do you turn around and sign him to a giant deal the very next year? That made little sense. Most of those deals were questionable, at best.

Other than the Philly trade, I think the FO has done a great job so far. We’ve avoided big commitments and still kept the ability to remain cap flexible going forward. Just have to be comfortable with the idea that there will be some holes where we’ll need young guys to step in and fill or pick up some bargain FAs in the summer.

    • The Flying Pig says:

I’m happy with e FO moves to an extent
I would prefer to have A 2018 team with Landry and Suh
But I am glad we made the OL moves we made – and that was a big deal

    • stangerx says:

Easy to look at with 20/20, but thought we got value with Stills at least….and they did let him test the waters before he came back at a lower price. And Jones I just think a stud. So am cool. Kiko and Branch might have gotten more than they should cause they were Gase guys….but still solid players.

  91. wyoming85 says:

OH I’m going to like reading the Sitton quotes!

  92. Mike E. says:

LOL! – That’s a great quote from Sitton

  93. Mike E. says:

drg – Is that true that Kiko, Branch Still and Jones are team leaders? Maybe compliant would be a better word, and possibly Jones is a team leader, but I think we’ve had a huge lack of leadership on this team, so if they are leaders, they’re ineffective at best.

  94. Mike E. says:

Wow! I knew it was going to be big bucs

    Ken,
Hydrocodone specifically but Oxycodone to some extent as well weakens the heart muscles if used for a prolonged period of time or abused for even a moderately short amount of time. • Ken says:

I stopped taking them over a week ago. I was on it for about 2 weeks

      • drg says:

Stay away from that crap if at all possible. Too many negatives. Alternate Tylenol/Advil and whatever else seems to help. Pot, JD, whatever… lol.

      • Ken says:

It was necessary immediately post surgery but as soon as I was able to tolerate the pain I got off of them

  97. drg says:

    Mike,

Seemed to me that Suh, Wake, Landry, and Pouncey were probably the “leaders” last year. Suh does his own thing and isn’t a natural leader. Wake is kind of the same. Wake at least is a great example. Landry gives you the emotion and fire, not so much the team player type. Pouncey is sketchy. I think we are all glad to see him go.

I like Jones and Stills. Think they can be good leaders in the locker room if that’s the role they assume. Tannehill needs to play better before he can demand respect. Maybe Sitton is a guy that will bring the OL together on and off the field.

Pretty obvious Gase did not have control of the team last year. This is his shot to change that.

  98. drg says:

    Pig,

Even though Landry and Suh are great players, are they difference makers? How hard is it to replace their value, or at least 80% of their value? I think that’s the question. Can we utilize the cap space to improve other positions while getting a slight % less from their replacements? Does the team play better as a whole because of the additions/subtractions.

Ideally, I would have loved to see Landry fall in line and stay with us. Even at 15 million/year. Hard to say what the right move was.

    • The Flying Pig says:

I think on a game to game basis – great players make the difference
The real problem with our team wasn’t the top players, it was the middle tier IMO
and the root of that was bad drafting for years
