2018 NFL Draft – Defensive Tackles

Executive decision here . . .   I’ve decided to ditch the Free Agency articles, it’s a lot of work, and I really think at this point, a waste of time, because I think most of our spending is done.  We do get the $17M from letting the Ndominant one go, but that’s in June, after some more cuts happen, and it’s too complicated to try and figure out who those players may be, soooooo, ON TO THE DRAFT!!

As I mentioned, Suh is no longer playing 874 snaps for our defense this season, so other guys are going to need to step up big time.  Of course, we’re not going to stay pat with what we have, we will surely be drafting a DT, but in what RD that happens is very much up in the air (at least for us!).  Jordan Phillips has said he wants to be a better player, and we’ll need him to be, and 2nd YR player Davon Godchaux will need to continue to develop.  behind those two,  it’s looking pretty thin with 2nd YR DT Vincent Taylor, Gabe Wright, the occasionally used DE/DT William Hayes.  I’m going to take a look at a few prospects I like that can help our team.  Most will be early RD picks, but a couple of late ones too.

Vita Vea  6’4 347  Washington

NCAA Football: Fiesta Bowl-Penn State vs Washington

Most likely the first DT off the board in the 2018 NFL draft, will it be by our Miami Dolphins?  It’s a possibility, but cool your engines, there are a LOT of possibilities, and on draft day, things we don’t even foresee happening may happen, which could shake up even the best laid plans.  Back to Vita Vea, who is a behemoth of a DT.  Both he and Da’Ron Payne, who I’ll discuss next are the highest rated DT’s at 6.5 by NFL.com.  Vea was a 3 year starter at Washington, playing in almost every game each year.  Playing in the Pac-12,  Vea was pretty consistent his last 2 seasons, piling up around 40 tackles and in his Sophomore season tallying 5 sacks, and last year, his Junior season 3.5 sacks.  He’s not really a penetrator, he’s more of a space eater.  As to whether he could occupy 2 blockers like Suh did, or whether we’re even looking for that type of player is another story.  While Suh was effective at that, did it make our defense any better?

Vea did well at the combine, at least at the weight rack where he threw up 41 reps, and actually, at 347 lbs, running a 5.1 is pretty damn impressive as far as I’m concerned.  Zierlein compares Vea to Danny Shelton, who besides now residing in the AFC East with NE, has had a rather unremarkable career.  I believe Vea is more athletic than Shelton, and although Vea’s a little larger, he moves much better than Shelton does.   The Dolphins have scheduled a visit with Vea as one of their 30 allotted visits.  That visit may go a long way as to whether he’s in our plans at #11 or not.

************************************************************************************

Da’Ron Payne  6’2 311  Alabama

905108286.jpg.0.jpg

Da’Ron Payne was actually close in size to Vita Vea as a HS recruit at 350 lbs, but Payne has managed to keep his weight down to just over 300 lbs.  While Payne isn’t as large as Vea, he’s also more of a run stuffing DT who happens to be excellent at tackling.  Payne is a power player, but he’s not as athletically gifted as Vea is, and doesn’t move as well.  What Payne does better is hold his ground, shed blocks, and make tackles.  I actually think Payne would fit very well for our team.  He’s also not a penetrator like Aaron Donald, and won’t be racking up sacks, but if we could plug in a DT will make tackles in the run game, I’m down on that.

At Bama, Payne slowly built up his playing time, and saved his best for last.  In his Junior year, Payne finished with 36 total tackles and 1.5 sacks.  Payne’s Junior and last season was best with 53 total tackles along with 1 sack.  As you can see, Payne has not been a pass rushing DT, but that doesn’t mean he can’t improve that as a pro.  Payne put up 27 reps at the combine, but don’t be fooled, he’s a powerful guy.  Zierlein says Payne is ready to start right out of the box, so that would be great for us, because we could use Godchaux in passing downs, where I think he will improve.

************************************************************************************

Taven Bryan  6’4 291  Florida

Florida Gators Orange and Blue Debut Swamp Night University of F

You look at Taven Bryan, and you think of a big TE, or maybe a DE, but he doesn’t strike you as an interior defensive lineman.  He’s built narrower, without the extra thick lower body and belly area, but those qualities make him a better pass rushing prospect than the 2 aforementioned DT’s.  Bryan improved each year at Florida garnering more playing time each year.  In his final year (Junior) he finished with 37 total tackles, 6 for a loss, along with 4 sacks.  He’s still very raw, but has more of an upside as far as a pass rusher.  He’s not going to be a run stuffer like Vea or Payne, but could turn out like a guy named Cam Jordan, who he was compared to.  Jordan has had a long career playing DE for the Saints in a 4-3 defense, and 59.5 sacks later, playing very well, thank you!  Does that mean Bryan is destined to play outside?  It’s possible, or maybe he becomes a great pass rushing DT like Aaron Donald, or Justin Tuck.  Did I mention he’s from Wyoming?  Did I mention his dad was a Navy Seal?

Unlike Vea or Payne, Bryan may not be a plug-n-play DT, but more of a work into the rotation kind of guy, but his athleticism gives him a lot of upside.  The problem with us drafting Bryan is he would have to last to RD 2, and depending on which way we go RD 1, if we go defense in RD1, I have RD 2 slated for our next TE, so I can’t see Bryan being in the cards, unless we trade back in RD1, which is always a possibility with Mikey Tradey Pants, because staying put is just oh so hard for him.

**********************************************************************************

Harrison Phillips  6’4 307  Stanford

857917040.jpg.0

Smith is actually one of my favorite DT prospects, if not my favorite.  While the other guys have upsides, this guy has been producing his last 2 seasons at DT, after getting little playing time his first 2 years at DE.  Phillips is a former wrestling champion, and that’s a great attribute to bring to to the trenches.  While Phillips isn’t a gifted athlete, he’s an effort guy, and man, did his effort show this past season.  No typos here, Phillips racked up 98 total tackles (61 solo) which is basically 3 times or more the totals of the top 2 guys. Phillips also had an extremely impressive 17.0 tackles for a loss, along  with 7 1/2 sacks, to give him 14 1/2 sacks in 2 seasons as a DT.

At the combine, Phiilips continued his great effort with 42 reps, and that’s not with short stubby arms, he has 34″ arms folks!  Zierlein compares Phillips to Ryan Glasgow (Who?), but I’ve heard a better comparison, and that’s Kyle Williams, who has had a very successful 12 year career with the Buffalo Bills. I see that type of potential for Phillips.  Everyone is always enamored with the athletic guys, but it’s the effort guys that go, and keep going in the NFL, and Phillips is just that.  He’s also a RD 2-3 guy, and it may be unlikely he’s still there in RD 3, but if we haven’t yet addressed DT by then, and he’s still on the board, I think he’d be a great pick for our Dolphins.

***********************************************************************************

Derrick Nnadi  6’1 299  Florida St.

GettyImages-490382382-copy

Nnadi is more of a mid RD prospect, which may suit as well as far as timing.  If we go away from DT in RD 1, and we get our TE in RD 2, we can start looking for a DT a little later, from RD 3 on, and really, It’s not like we didn’t have success last year with Godchaux giving us nearly 600 snaps last season from Rd 5.  Nnadi is built like a fire hydrant, low center of gravity, thick lower body.  Nnadi was a starter since his Sophomore year at Florida St, and was pretty productive.  In his Senior year, Nnadi totaled 53 tackles with 10 tackles for a loss, along with 3.5 sacks.  In his Junior year, Nnadi had 6.5 sacks, to give him an even 10 in 2 seasons.

Zierlein considers Nnadi a NT, but mostly he’s an active player with a good motor who may be a potential starter.  Just a note, Nnadi played at over 310 lbs at Florida State, he cut weight for the combine, and he still ran a 5.38, so Nnadi isn’t a TE prospect playing DT, he’s a big boy who belongs in the trenches.

**********************************************************************************

Deadrin Senat  6’0 314  South Florida

usa-today-8795214.0

Senat played at South Florida in the American Conference, obviously not the powerhouse of NCAA football.  On the other hand, Senat is still a very good prospect, also in that middle round area, maybe 3-5. Senat was pretty productive at S. FLA, and in his Senior season, logged 66 total tackles, 10 tackles for loss along with 6 sacks.  Another powerful interior defender, Senat has a short squat frame that enables him to get better leverage in the trenches.  Not considered to pass rush threat because of a lack of pass rush repertoire, and not the most athletic prospect to begin with, Senat can be a good rotational player that can hold his own and make tackles. Senat put up 35 reps at the combine, and has a strong upper body. Senat probably won’t be an NFL starter unless a coach gets a hold of him and improves his technique, but could still be a valuable player in a DL rotation.

*************************************************************************************

There are so many prospects, and I’m sure I’ve left out some of your favorites, so shout ’em out and tell me who they are.  Some guys I almost put in were B.J. Hill, Nathan Shepherd and Maurice Hurst, who I believe still has not been medically cleared.

Gore was a great RB, I just hope he has some mileage left, if he does that’s a great pick-up

  2. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I would be shocked if we selected a QB at 11, aint gonna happen, Gase and Tbaum need performance out of that pick and taking a QB who’ll sit for 2 years doesn’t equate to performing.

  3. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I hope all 4 QBs are gone at 11 because that will cause good talent to slide and be available at 11

  4. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I’m not sure i would call Fales a failure? he really hasn’t had the reps to determine his value, from the limited play he seems pretty good.

  5. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I can’t see Gore being a bell cow anymore. He is there to be a backup to Drake

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Well I was thinking he would be #3 on the depth chart

But you can’t disreagrd that he had over 200 carries in 2017

  6. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Quite frankly I would have been happier re-signing Williams instead of Gore

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Williams had an offer from MIA, he chose to look elsewhere. I’m happy with Gore, he plays hard, and he’s a pro’s pro

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

On the age issue, I wouldn’t place to much weight on the difference between Williams and Gore

It’s not like Williams was going to be here long term
Gore is just a better player

I still say we draft a RB Drake/Rookie/Gore

I think it’s crucial to add a vet
And Gore has had an exceptional career
      He’s not washed up yet

  7. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Gore last season — 16 games started for 971 yards on 261 carries (3.7 average). 245 in catch yards as well. We could do worse.

  8. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Drake – Guice – Gore

    Who’s going to stop us!
    🐷🐷🐷🐷🐷🐷🐷🐷

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not sure about Guice…..but certainly leaves open the possibility of bringing in once of those backs in the draft you like. What better mentor than Gore?

  9. D's avatar D says:

I think you are right Ken he isnt the beell cow, but he likely is there to take grind time off of Drake. No reason to run down your best back feeding him the ball in grind it out situations. Gore in that capacity will be a good addition, but im with Piggy as well i dont think it precludes us from drafting a guy, it just might push the priority of the pick back a little.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’m not even sure it pushes the priority back so much

It still might be a day 2 pick
Probably never going to be a day 1 pick

But I still think 2nd- 4th round is the sweet spot

  10. D's avatar D says:

Gore is more useful to us than Williams given what we have on the roster. I could see us getting a guy like Scarborough, Ballage, Ralph Webb, Ito Smith, Williams out of LSU, or even Petteway from Auburn. Those guys are going to be hovering around 5-UDFA so we can get them on the cheap and each has a pretty good chance to replace Gore in that role next year.

  11. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I can see the Giants drafting Chubb at #2.

  12. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    In case you were wondering
These are my favorite Oinking RBs of the draft on this order

    1. Guice
    2. Chubb
    3. Freeman
    4. John Kelly
    5. Scarborough

    These guys aren’t anyone’s top 5
I just like their running styles

  13. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

why is Barkley even in discussion for a top 10 pick? He wasn’t even in the top 10 in rushing yards in the ncaa. I’m not being snide, I really want to know. he was like 28th in rushing yards behind 5-6 QB’s.

  14. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

    Rd 1 – QB/LB
    Rd 2 – TE
    Rd 3 – OL/TE
    Rd 4 – OL/TE
    Rd 4 – DT/LB
    Rd 5 – DT/RB/Safety
    Rd 6 & 7 – Who cares

  15. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Phelon broke out his AR15 and got our 5th RD pick back. WTG Phelon!

  16. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m good with signing Frank Gore for a mere year, so long as we’re going ‘hydra’ with him, Drake, and a rook: it’s not very often that youngsters get to learn from one of the very best in the history of the game. Frank needs just 76 rushing yards this year to eclipse Curtis Martin as #4 in career rushing yards, behind only Emmitt, Walter, and Barry.

Now, Brock Osweiler? Umm… JUST SAY NO! His 76.5 career passer rating is all ya need to know. Matt Moore would smoke him in an outright competition, and we’re trying to get better than Moore was last year as a backup.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Hydra has nine heads…don’t think we need nine RB. Now the Hydra’s bro, Cerberus, had three heads. And his other bro, the Chimera, also had three heads but they were a lion, a goat, and a snake.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I know Bro… I know! I used “hydra” as a generic for multi-headed, or running back by committee (RBC).

If can find our “Earth, Wind, and Fire”, I shall NAME them CERBERUS! 🙂

  17. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rock – Just watch some of the highlights for Barkley – He’s a special athlete, and he may be one of those generational talents, like an LT.

  18. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

No it is not our best team, but have the Phins ever been more wide open as far as position going into the draft? Not the high-priced flashy items in most places, but we have a team that could line up and play tmrw other than at TE.

  19. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m on board with trading down and taking a TE 1st rd. Yep I said it! 🙂

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

That’s the ONLY way I’d trade down at this point… to take our TE early… I’m with ya.

Previously, I would have traded down for Billy Price… but I don’t see us doing that now with recent FA moves (Kilgore).

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Right with you….trade down low first, take the TE of choice, and pick up another 2nd and a 3rd as well or a 2nd next year.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We are in a spot at #11 where a team picking in the 20’s might be high on someone and they make the move.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Always need a partner for any trade, but we can go into serious value for a trade down into the low 20’s without even think about what if that 4th QB was there.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Could be a deal where we wait to see who’s there at #11 on draft day, then make the trade, not prior to the draft.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Yep — whether the trade happens or not would have to depend on some team wanting whoever is there. Guess getting such deals done is an extra advantage of being in the top 5.

  20. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Remember also that @ 11, that’s when the 5th year option becomes average of 3rd to 25th players at position. Not the top 10 of players average if you draft them in the top 10. So that could potentially be a selling point as well as that 5th year option would be cheaper @ 11

  21. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

so, Barkley “looks” like a running back prospect? I don’t get it. Penny is 5’11’ 220LBS and has way more yards than Barkley and more touch downs. What does a prospect look like?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

It comes down to tape more than production… how does a given prospect ‘look’ on tape.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Guys put up big stats in college and do not translate to the NFL. Some not only don’t get drafted they don’t make it in the NFL. The college game is all over the place with teams playing against each other that shouldn’t be vs. legit competition. Even bad NFL teams are made up of top college talent.

  22. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

It looks as though our biggest competition for a top-notch TE would be the Ravens (R1P16) and the Saints (R1P27)…

  23. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

A very wise man once told me that you have to get the right people on the bus, not necessarily the best people as in most talented, but the best group with the right chemistry / talent mix who will be the best as a team. They have to mesh and fight for each other as a team.

  24. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Good point ER, it starts at #11, so that is a selling point

  25. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Gase has said many times he prefers a RB by committee approach so that’s what we’re going to be. Sure one guy may get the larger workload, but he doesn’t want to have to rely on one guy.

  26. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

I too think Penny should be on the RB list!
    @#3 and push scarbrooo off!

  27. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    hmmmmm

    hmmmmmmmmmmmm

I guess you can’t watch highlights to make a call on this kind of thing Penny looks better than Barkley in his highlights. Barkley IS NOT going to pull that jump over defenders shit in the NFL.

#20 looks faster and looks like he sees the field better than #26. Again, highlights.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Do you think the level of competition is the same, with Barkley at Penn St, and Penny at San Diego St.?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

HIGHLIGHTS are where people run into BAD evals, Brother!

You’ve got to watch the GAME TAPE, understand the strength of the Defense (in this instance) of who these RBs are playing against. the strength of their respective O-Lines, how quickly do they respond at the snap, are they gimmick players who have 5 mere runs for 90+ yards to inflate their stats, etc, etc.

I’ve studied Rashaad Penny HARD CORE, and he’s 100% LEGIT!!! As is Saquon Barkley!!! Stats don’t count when it comes to scouting.

  28. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    M = Pennywise

  29. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Soooo, where is Penny projected to go? He can return kicks like a MF too. How many kickoffs and punts did he return for TD’s in his college career? 7 or 8?

  30. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  31. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

“You’ve got to watch the GAME TAPE, understand the strength of the Defense…..”

I don’t follow college ball when it’s on during the season, I’m certainly not going to waste my time watching “game tape” in the off season. That’s what the coaches and scouts get paid for. I only asked the question because my buddy at work is a Penny-a-holic and wants the Stealers to pick him, wont shut up about him so I watched his highlights.

  32. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I am going to change my name to Raaq’fean. There are just too many Rockphin’s out there and I need to be more unique…….

    Rockphin,

If you go back to some of the notes/posts I left here on this blog regarding Penny around the time of Thanksgiving (I don’t expect you or anyone else to do so), you’ll see how he lit up some of the top run-defending Defenses in the NCAA… the dude can’t be stopped.

    Penny IS the REAL DEAL.

  34. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Teddy Ginn Jr. highlights from college looked pretty good to. Ohhh Black Betty bamalama

  35. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

OK I am getting on your wagon there MF13.

    My mancrush list
    Goedert
    Penny
    Flowers

  36. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Highlights show what a player is capable of and some have more highlight plays than others. Even pro highlights. Everyone knows there are down plays or plays where the player wasn’t involved in anything.

Penny might be better than Barkley when it’s all said and done. It’s happened before. Terrell Davis 6th rd, Priest Holmes and Arian Foster undrafted etc.

  37. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

  41. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m not too concerned about backup QB because there isn’t much out there as far as vets, and outside of a rookie who surprises we’re not going to win much if we have to go with them for a long stretch. I know Foles is the new phase of backup QBs but that’s rare. We need to find a Jimmy G type.

  42. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

So as of today, this is what I would entertain… IF the “Big 4 QBs” are gone by the time we select @ R1P11…

Trade down to R1P16 (Ravens), with assurances they won’t take a TE at R1P11, in exchange for R3P19 AND a future (3rd rounder?) draft pick…

And realize, “Mikey Trady-Pants” will likely trade our bevy of picks to move around, up and down…

    R1P16: Mike Gesicki, TE, PSU
    R2P10: Kyle Lauletta, QB, Richmond
    R3P9: Rashaad Penny, RB, SDSU
R3P19 (from Ravens): Shaquem Griffin, LB, UCF
R4P23: Durham Smythe, TE, Notre Dame
    R4P31: Tarvarus McFadden, CB, FSU
    R6P35: James Looney, DT, Cal
R7P9: Skai Moore, LB, South Carolina
R7P11: Jalen Davis, CB, Utah State

I wouldn’t care if we came out of this draft with 5 prospects we have a vision for. We have enough projects.

        🙂

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

No that doesn’t mean no OL. Target starters and significant role players. Not more Doughty and Duarte types.

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Doughty does well in his apparent role. He never was going to be an NFL QB, but he works hard and does his job for the team.

Now as for Farty….no clue. Maybe now it’s been long enough he has but on some weight, but I’m thinking he won’t make it out of TC this year.

    • I you haven’t seen Tyler Conklin of Central Michigan you must check him out. He’d change your mind on Smythe in a heartbeat.

I noticed that this year, at least not yet anyway, that NFL.com hasn’t updated their grades for prospects. At some point, I thought shortly after the combine, they redo their grades but they haven’t done that yet, or maybe not doing it at all

  51. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Wyo

I’m going to be upset when the Jets draft any QB at #6 other than Josh Rosen. He’s the one guy I can see busting more than the others.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

It’s funny we see things very differently at QB. I think Rosen is the day one least likely to bust. He is the most polished and pro ready in the group imo. I think both Allen and Darnold have higher ceilings but have more busy potential. I also think the one most likely to bust is Mayfield. His game just doesn’t project at the next level. The things that made him so successful in college are not going to work in the pros

All of the big “4” QB’s have some warts!

THE DIFFERENCE IF YOU MARRY A WYOMING GIRL

Three friends married women from different parts of the country.

The first man married a woman from Alabama . He told her that she was to do the dishes and house cleaning. It took a couple of days, but on the third day, he came home to see a clean house and dishes washe
    d and put away.

The second man married a woman from South Dakota . He gave his wife orders that she was to do all the cleaning, dishes and the cooking. The first day he didn’t see any results, but the next day he saw it was better. By the third day, he saw his house was clean, the dishes were done, and there was a huge dinner on the table.

The third man married a girl from Wyoming . He ordered her to keep the house cleaned, dishes washed, lawn mowed, laundry washed, and hot meals on the table for every meal. He said the first day he didn’t see anything, the second day he didn’t see anything but by the third day, some of the swelling had gone down and he could see a little out of his left eye, and his arm was healed enough that he could fix himself a sandwich and load the dishwasher. He still has some difficulty when he pees.

Been watching some video on DEs. Anybody like Rasheem Green?

  64. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Lou, solid mock up above but a DE in the 3rd rd? We’re kind of stocked there already. Someone would have to inactive.

  65. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Wyoming,
He looks like a little bit of a project, but I liked his raw athleticism and body type. He is not a strong edge setter in the film I watched. But, he just looks like a young dude with some potential who may be available in the middle rounds with the potential to have some real value in a couple years. I was just curious if others around here who have done more research knew anything about him, as I know nothing. He kind of reminds me of Danielle Hunter who the Vikings drafted a few years ago.

Why are you watching videos of pass rushers?
We have about 80 of them in the roster right now…lol

You are setting yourself up for heartbreak
It’s probably the one position I don’t think we draft

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I just said that about Lou’s mock draft. He took Lorenzo Carter in the 3rd. We have 7 DEs on the roster and 5 of them are likely active on game day in Wake, Branch, Quinn, Harris and Hayes.

  69. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Looks like the Circus is in town?

  70. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

We have a lot of stopgaps and older guys at DE. Maybe Lou thinks Lorenzo Carter can be that guy in a year or two.

  71. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Got both the Edmund boys!

11: R1P11 LB TREMAINE EDMUNDS, VIRGINIA TECH
42: R2P10 TE MIKE GESICKI, PENN STATE
73: R3P9 RB RASHAAD PENNY, SDSU
123: R4P23 QB KURT BENKERT, VIRGINIA
    131: R4P31 S TERRELL EDMUNDS, VIRGINIA TECH
209: R6P35 CB SIRAN NEAL, JACKSONVILLE ST
227: R7P9 OT TOBY WEATHERSBY, LSU
229: R7P11 DL MIKE RAMSAY, DUKE

    MIke E,
I was actually thinking of writing, he could be for our DE’s the way Caroo was for our WR’s but I didn’t think you’d see it as a joke. lol.

  77. D's avatar D says:

Carter is one of the DE prospects i like best at least in a range where i feel we are getting good value and future potential. That wasnt a bad pick at all.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Didn’t say it was a bad pick, but how many DEs can you keep on the roster? We already have a game day 5 and two bigger DEs in Malveaux and Woodard competing for a spot. Fede who was good on STs and for depth is still out there as a FA as well.

  78. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’d say if we don’t add a vet DT that there is a 99% chance we draft a DT at some point.

  79. Randy's avatar Randy says:

You can never have too many edge rushers. Wake is old. Quinn is a question mark, to me. Harris still hasn’t convinced me he can be anything but average. All the other guys are edge setters. So, I looked at some DEs….sue me ya beotches! Do you want me to talk just about Tannehill some more? Lol

He won’t care about winning, he’ll go the Jets if they give him more money. Bet on it!

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He could also be putting that out there to up the anti elsewhere. Just like the NFL is a business, Suh is a business man as much as he is a football player. One of his goals in life is to be a billionaire.

  84. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Wyo, I am a believer that you can correct accuracy with working on footwork, release point and good knowledge of where everyone is supposed to be. This idea that you either have it or not is bogus to me. That suggests nobody can ever get better at anything which is retarded.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Not necessarily. There are so many pitchers that have poor control, and are wild their entire career. I’m sure coaches try to fix whatever causes the pitcher to be wild, but sometimes athletes just can’t repeat the same motion, and go back to old habits.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Of course there are some, but there are plenty of examples of guys improving their games in all sports where they were thought to never be that good.

Tom Brady improved so many facets of his game in his first 3 years to get to where he is now. He was nothing like the QB he is now when he was drafted.

Noah Syndergaard is an example of raising the level of his game with better control.

  85. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

There are plenty of inaccurate cannons . . .

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We’ve seen the elite QBs look inaccurate at times too. There is a lot involved in that.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Of course, but this guy has been inaccurate for 2 years, and that’s all we have to go by. It’s not just every once in a while, it’s his entire college career. lol

  86. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Tim

Syndergaard was never that wild. I know what you’re getting at. Nolan Ryan would probably be a better example. the Mets actually gave up on Ryan and traded him because they thought he would never have control. It all comes down to if they have actually found the real reason, they say with Allen it’s his footwork, but if he can’t throw like that in a game, then it could be a problem. Just think of Cutler throwing off his back foot nearly all the time last year, it drove everyone up the wall.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed but that has a lot to do with how you drop back and set your feet. Sometimes guys in college just rely on their physical abilities because they can. Allen is a guy who should sit a year.

  87. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Cespedes!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

LOL, I hope Callaway and Eiland can help keep this pitching staff together this year because that is how we’re going to win.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Did you hear Monteiro needs Tommy John? Also, Zack Wheeler sucked big time his last outing, and he’s fighting for a spot with Seth Lugo, so with Monteiro out, Wheeler might take the long man role in the bullpen

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

WTF with the Tommy John injuries?

Wheeler seems to be having a hard time recovering from it.

  88. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
Not true! Landry, Jones, Suh. they are all upper echelon players. We really don’t have any other players on the team… or recently traded who are more than average guys. It’s not my fault by pointing it out. Quinn was an above-average player, but I’m not willing to assume he is still. I certainly won’t be shocked if he goes out and gets 8 to 10 sacks this year but I also won’t be surprised if it gets 4. Can you name the other guys on this team that are better than average players?

  89. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Oops. Wake was supposed to be in there too.

  90. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
Yes, it’s cool. I just think this is an interesring conversation to have because our talent pool really isn’t that great. I am totally willing to give Harris the benefit of the doubt at this point. He’s still a young player but all I can go on is what I saw so far. I do think he’ll improve. But, even if he does our other two top Edge rushers are guys who may not even be playing in 3 years. I really do think we need some young blood at defensive end. Not run stopping defensive ends, the guys who can go out and get you 10 plus sacks a year.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I absolutely think we have the potential for that. The offense is more of a key for that than the players themselves. We need to score and have a lead here and there so those guys can pin their ears back. We played from behind too often.

  91. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Randy – Thing is, it never put us over the top having a few elite players, in fact, having Suh never seemed to even improve the defense, so it’s not just about having elite players, it’s about having the greater majority of your players execute what they’re supposed to do, and the team looks better. I don’t have to explain any of this to you, you know that better than I do.

  92. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

We play nickel 100% of the time anyway

  93. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MkeE,
Yeah, it wasn’t really a comment about those specific players being let go. It was more about overall team Talent. I would disagree than average team can really win championships. I think you need that small handful of players that are upper echelon guys. I can’t think of too many successful teams that don’t have three or four of those guys on their team.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think if we get better execution across the board, there will be those guys that have great seasons, or elite seasons.

  94. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

The big problem with having guys like that is that you can’t be paying them the kind of the money they were scheduled or asking to make and still have a successful team. The QB is going to make money, that’s just the market, before anyone brings up Tannehill. I’m looking at you Iowa Ice Bucket.
