2018 NFL Draft – Cornerbacks

This is the last look at defensive players for this draft after covering the DT’s, LB’s and Safeties.  I skipped DE since we’re heavily stocked there.  Every team needs a lot of good CB’s, and we may already have some, but there are definitely question marks.  X really came on strong at the end of the season, but is that the real Xavien Howard, or is the X we saw 3/4 of the season the real X?  Howard wasn’t the only CB to have an uneven season.  Rookie CB Cordrea Tankersley showed well at times, and struggled at times as expected.  The rookie 3rd RD pick was thrust into action after the Dolphins let go of Byron Maxwell.  Tank started 11 games last season, had no INT’s, and had 7 passes defensed.  Not known for his tackling, I thought he did well at times tackling, better than expected.  Sometimes maligned slot CB Bobby McCain was easily our best CB last year. McCain was played in all 16 games, and was the most consistent DB we had in coverage.  Tony Lippett should be back from his achilles injury which occurred last August, but I don’t know his recovery is going, and if he will indeed be ready.  In other words, CB should likely be one of our picks in this coming draft.  Let’s see what’s out there . . .

Denzel Ward  5’10  191  Ohio State

Denzel Ward

A little undersized for what we’re usually looking for, Ward is nonetheless the best cover corner in this draft.  He projects well at nickle, and we have Bobby McCain.  He can definitely play outside as well, but would we change our prototype and take a smaller CB?  The basic rule is you don’t go against your prototype parameters, because then all of a sudden, you have a team full of odd matching pieces.  On the other hand, in today’s NFL, teams trot out 4 and 5 WR formations so often, you just have to be 6 or 7 deep with with talented CB’s.  Ward has great speed, running a 4.32 in addition to a 39″ vertical and a 139″ broad jump, and 16 reps.  This kid is a thoroughbred athlete, and while his stats at Ohio State don’t reflect just how good he is, he’s the top rated corner in this draft at 6.31.  If we ere take Ward, it would have to be at #11, if he’s even still there, and it’s very possible he’s already gone.

**********************************************************************************

Josh Jackson  6’1  192  Iowa

AR-171209656.jpg&MaxH=500&MaxW=900

All hail the Ballhawk!  Jackson had a terrific Junior year to end his college career and put him in excellent standing for the NFL Draft.  Jackson started 13 games, and finished with an outstanding 8 INT’s, (2 for TD’s), 48 tackles (34 solo), 1 FF, and an amazing 18 passes defensed.  You could easily make the argument that Jackson is the best cover corner, but I think Ward gets the nod for his potential in the pros, and his edge in speed and athleticism.  Jackson ran a pedestrian 4.56 at the combine, but his 4.03 20 yard shuttle shows good short area burst.  Jackson will probably be a 1st RD pick, somewhere in last 1/3 of the 1st RD, but it’s possible he slips to the early 2nd RD.  Either way, he’s almost certainly not going to be available to us unless we take him at #11, and I don’t see that happening.  NFL.com has Jackson rated at 6.0

*******************************************************************************

Jaire Alexander 5’11 192  Louisville

1*_AIN7nMJwjjQimtyn4C9Xw

Jaire Alexander had somewhat of a cursed Junior season at Louisville.  he sprained his knee in the season opener, and then came back 4 games later and aggravated the knee again.  Then he broke his hand at the end of October, which kept him out even more of the season.  It’s a shame, because Alexander had a fine Sophomore season starting all 13 games and totaling 39 tackles (31 solo), 5 INT’s, 1 FF, 1 FR and 9 passes defensed.  Alexander has excellent cat like quickness as well as good deep speed, running a 4.38 40 with a super quick 3.98 20 YD shuttle. I’m sure scouts would have liked to seen Alexander build on his fine Junior season, but regardless, Alexander is still a possible 1st RD or 2nd RD pick.  Alexander is rated at 5.99 on NFL.com

**********************************************************************************

Parry Nickerson  6’0 180  Tulane

57518248ed674.image

I wanted to look at some mid RD prospects as well, and Parry Nickerson falls right into that spot.  Long, but thin, Nickerson is another ballhawk at CB.  Very fast running a 4.32 at the combine, Nickerson was very productive at Tulane.  He finished his 4 year career with an impressive 16 INT’s, Despite his thin frame Nickerson still managed 15 reps at the combine.  A very instinctive CB, also very capable of playing press, he has excellent recovery speed as well as long deep speed.  Always around the ball, I think he’d be a fine mid RD pick for our team.  Nickerson is rated at 5.69 and is expected to be a 3rd or 4th RD pick.

**********************************************************************************

Mike Hughes 5’10 189 UCF

900319168.jpg.0

Mike Hughes is an interesting prospect, and I’m sure our own draft analyst from FLA Sonny could give us more insight into this player.  Not much college ball experience from which to glean information, Hughes has some serious upside.  Despite his somewhat smaller size, he’s an extremely tough customer who has the ability to compete on the outside with bigger receivers. Hughes only has 2 years of playing experience, starting every contest his Junior year at UCF.  While he doesn’t have deep speed, he’s a powerful press corner, who is excellent at tracking the football.  His Junior year, Hughes totaled 49 tackles (37 solo), 4 INT’s (1 for a TD), 1 FF and 11 passes defensed.  Hughes is rated at 5.93 and at least by Zierlein, expected to be a 1st RD pick.  He’s much more about potential than actual production, so I see him as a 2nd RD pick, but we’ll see in a couple of weeks.

**********************************************************************************

I’m sure I missed a bunch of prospects that you guys like so let me hear about them,  and I’m curious to hear from Son on Mike Hughes.  I wanted to include a late RD pick, like Tarvarus McFadden and Brandon Facyson, but since I only do 5, I just couldn’t fit them in.

I like Hayden Hurst the best, and though im not a fan of Gesicki ill admit i think he is probably the second best TE prospect out of the bunch. I think Mark Andrews is a better overall receiving threat at TE, but Gesicki is a better hyrbid TE type and i would rather have one of those guys than someone who is simply a move TE. I think Goedert is probably a decent receiving TE with decent blocking ability, but i also feel like he is untested. I think there is plenty to work with, but he is most likely going to be affected by spped of the NFL game, vs some of those other guys who play against competition closer to what the NFL has. I like Schultz and Fumagalli too. Im not too concerned about the missing finer.

    • D's avatar D says:

Also as a more pure receiving threat, Goolsby out of UF would be solid, UF turns out some good TE’s. Serigne from Wake Forest, Tyler Conklin Western Michigan.

For more blocking types, Jeb Blazevich UGA, Jordan Thomas Miss State, Ethan Wolfe UTenn.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Besides Hurst, do you see Gesicki or Andrews as a ready to plug in right now starting TE, whether it’s just a flex out receiver or an in line TE? Do you think we can wait to get the other guys you mentioned and put them in as a day 1 starter? I think we need one of these guys to be there immediately, or we can expect an underwhelming season from our TE’s and most likely our entire offense.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Speed of the game isnt really an issue for TEs, they just do there own thing and the D reacts. Some will box you out, some are seem threats (Ok maybe speed affects these), some are find an open space and sit down…

Left out a really good one Mikey, in Carlton Davis from Auburn.Duke Dawson UF, Donte Jackson LSU, and Anthony Averett Alabama are really good. I wouldnt call them small CB’s (5’10-5’11) but they dont necessarily match the 6’+ we seem to be kind of looking for. Tolliver out of LSU is a really big guy with some good press skills. McFadden from FSU is similar.

Gesicki i think could be, Andrews is going to be a guy who has to develop his blocking more to be on the field in all packages.

    • D's avatar D says:

Fumagalli and Schultz, i think is a start right off guy, hybrid, just not as dynamic as maybe Hurst or Gesicki. If i didnt take one of those guys id probably double up with one from each of the two sub list TE, one primary receiver who works on their blocking, and one blocking that works on their redzone and/or receiving.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That’s interesting. I could be wrong, but I feel like if we don’t take one of the top guys, like Hurst or Gesicki, we’re going to be looking for a TE again next year. I admit though, I’m a little paranoid due to our extended failures to bring in an impact TE here in MIA

    ————————————-
I agree we need a good TE, but i think a lot of these guys will suffice and definitely be an improvement over last year. I think they also will all improve as they go, and Hurst and Gesicki are just the two that i think make that happen quicker. I still think you see a real improvement over Thomas from any of those guys i listed.

  24. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    M13,
OL in the first round? The only guy I’d take at 11 is Nelson, and I don’t think he’ll be there. I wouldn’t touch any other OL that high in this draft. Maybe on a trade back.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah I don’t think we’re taking an OL in the 1st. Not sure what position but I do think it will be BPA.

    • D's avatar D says:

Id be tempted to take McGlinchey but probably not over a lot of other guys who are sure to be there

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Randy, I’m 100% with ya, as usual. I’d highly consider an O-Lineman IF we were to trade back. Billy Price would be on my wish-list at that point.

      • D's avatar D says:

Not with his injury. Id take him in the second but i wouldnt sacrifice other talent to take him. You have to keep remembering, the choice for trade back would be made and you would be saying yeah, i dont think any of the guys at 11 are anymore valuable than whatever guy you are targeting with the trade back. I cant see there not being someone at 11 that is worth staying put for.

  25. D's avatar D says:

Mike i cant tell there is great trepidation with you and the TE position but unless we deliberatly dont bother with the position i think you are going to be happy with our selection. Its top heavy just no real freak show talent like we have seen with Ebron, ASJ, OJ Howard as i have seen in the past but its a deep class none-the-less. Also you can just look at some of those guys and realize just because they stand out talent wise doesnt mean they are going to develop, so i would say you shouldn’t feel anymore nervous about the later rounds than the first. If we haven’t taken anyone before the 4th round or we dont double up in the 4th-6th then i think that might make me nervous, but otherwise id be optimistic about the future at that position.

    ———
Billy Price’s pec tear was a partial. He’s going to be back in time for TC and he should be just fine. At worst, his fall in the Draft will be very minimal.

  27. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

M – You’re welcome! I’m a Velocity channel freak, I love anything with cars, and as soon as i saw them start building that thing, you were the first person that came to mind. Watching the show, they show it from the ground up, so that video kind of ruined it, because they show the finished product immediately. It must have been a lot of fun to build, and see it come to fruition.

    • D's avatar D says:

I like a lot of guys have interest in cars, but im not a “car freak” per say. My addiction are the murder forensic shows and the science channel. Im pretty big into history too, so American Pickrs and Pawns starts are kinda OK and these new treasure hunting shows are pretty cool, but id rather just have pure history shows.

  28. D's avatar D says:

I really feel more comfortable with Hurst and Gesicki being WYSIWYG than most other TE’s outside OJ Howard, these past few years. Id really like to come away with Hurst, but i guess we will see in a couple of weeks.

  29. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I see us going BPA in the 1st then between 2-4 I could see us targeting positions we feel we need to add that wasn’t the position we took in the 1st.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not surprised and I’m also not a big fan of his. He has never been what he was projected to be.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yeah, he’s never healthy, always about “what could have been” with him. It’s time to cut the cord on the d’Arnaud experiment, and either groom a catcher, or draft one, or go out and spend on one in FA. I’d prefer the 2 former.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He’s not a very good hitter, he’s not a very good defensive catcher, and he can’t stay healthy. Yep, time to move on.

Imagine if I came cruising into Hard Rock Stadium one day, with a replica of ‘Slave-1’?!! 😀

  35. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, the Mets have called up their best catching prospect Tomas Nido. He supposedly is a good defensive catcher and has a big arm for throwing guys out attempting to steal. Not sure about his bat.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I hope Nido is the answer, but I have a feeling they’re not to high on him because they brought in the Phillies catcher from last season, can’t think of his name. Maybe it’s just Nido isn’t ready yet in their eyes, but I guess we’ll see now with d’Arnaud out.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Plawecki will be the main catcher and Nido probably is here as depth and to give him a day off here and there.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

      Hide and Seek?

  36. D's avatar D says:

d’Arnaud is a pretty good catcher, he just cant stay healthy. Good catchers are kind of hard to come by, but i do think they can do better, especially if he never is on the field lol

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

He’s a decent hitter, but can never stay on track, because he always gets hurt. As far as defense, he’s good at calling a game, and is pretty adept at blocking the ball, but he can’t and has never been able to throw anyone out. He has no arm, and now he really has no arm. It’s like the same story every year, he’d be batting.300, then he’d get dinged up, miss a month, come back, be in a slump for a few weeks, start hitting again and then go back on the DL with something else. His entire career has been “what if”. I think he’s done in NY.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He’s a mediocre hitter, he calls a solid game and can block some errant pitches, but he can’t throw anyone out on the base paths. You take that with a guy who can’t stay healthy and it’s time to move on. He’s been one of the most frustrating players on this team the last few years.

Scarbrough (spell it correctly) has an injury history like WOW: not good! What’s more, he can’t catch the damned ball. I don’t think Gase would be very fond of him.
    ——————————-
He catches the ball pretty well actually and is a pretty solid blocker. Gase will know pretty well if he wants him since he is a Saban coached player. Drake, Yeldon to some extent, Derrick Henry, Mark Ingram, all of these are examples of previous RB’s with success coming from that system. Even Lacy (who admittedly had three good seasons and then fell off the face of the earth, and Trent Richardson who had a couple of good years before his lack of work ethic killed him arent complete flops, but i think the expectations were higher, especially for Richardson.

    So did Ajayi.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Did Ajayi? I know he had bone on bone, but I don’t recall him missing time injured over it. Standby, I’ll look.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

So he had a torn ACL as a freshman, nothing after that in college. In the NFL he had:
Jul 31, 2017 NFL Head Cranial Concussion Grade 1 Ajayi suffered a concussion in training camp.
Dec 24, 2016 NFL Shoulder A/C Joint Sprain Ajayi hurt his shoulder during a 32-carry effort in Week 16.
Sep 3, 2015 NFL Chest Rib Fracture Ajayi fractured a rib in the final preseason game and was placed on IR-designated to return.
Aug 11, 2015 NFL Thigh Hamstring Sprain/Pull Unspecified Grade 1 Ajayi’s injury occurred in training camp.
Aug 11, 2011 Non-NFL Knee ACL Tear Grade 3 Ajayi sustained a torn ACL as a true freshman at Boise State.

I wouldn’t consider that a history of getting injured.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

So Ajayi’s ‘bone-on-bone’ didn’t see him fall to the 5th round? Is that right?

    Phish, okay I gotcha! LOL

  52. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

In no particular order because we can’t get all the positions high in the draft and we don’t know how it’s going to go down – OL, TE, QB, RB, DT, LB, DB, K. At some positions we have a need for depth and competition, others we’re looking for upgrades, and then there is “have to have” which to me is TE and K. As much as I wouldn’t mind a WR like Ridley or someone else, it’s not a must. I think getting the TE would help balance out the passing game.

I read recently that we’re looking to get a K from the draft. We’ll probably draft one late and sign one as a UDFA.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

      I wouldn’t cry over Edmunds.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

For me you take the BPA when you pick at #11. The highest rated player on your board, if it fits a need, great! Once into the 2nd rd, it starts to level out more and you can target BPA at need positions, with the exception of a guy who fell that you had a 1st rd grade on.

  53. D's avatar D says:

Running backs are going to have things, almost all of them have an injury history. Drake’s though wasnt ACL. Drake had random injuries like rib, a sprained ankle, a concussion, a quad contusion, and finally a broken right arm. None of these are injuries that smell of re-aggravation or the likelihood of more of the same.

Scarbrough had one ACL injury very early in his career, 2015, but has not had a repeat, he did get a broken bone but again, bones 100% heal so these arent injuries you worry about. If the team evaluates him and NFL does at combine, then IMO he’s good enough to not worry about the past.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah lots of football players have had injuries at all levels. Very rare that you get a player with a completely clean injury history.

I LIKE(!!!) Bo Scarbrough. I’m just sayin’… he’s got a lengthy injury history and he’s not exactly proficient catching the ball out of the backfield. I’m not sure Gase would target him.

  57. D's avatar D says:

If we go back into any of these guys HS careers and move forward, you are going to be able to stack up some injuries. I played the game, its tough, you get hurt, and a lot of times you play through those injuries and make them worse or re-ggrivate, so is that 2 injuries or the same 1? Again, going of recent history, the guy looks no worse for wear than any other RB. Also if we select him its not like we are risking a 1st round pick or anything at best its probably going to be a 4th, so everything is a gamble by that point in the draft anyways. I think your making too big a deal about that to support not drafting a player that you personally dont like.

Correct! But that has absolutely NOTHING to do with why Bo Scarbrough doesn’t fit the Gase Offense.

    • D's avatar D says:

He’s the same style back s Gore, so if they went out and got Gore, why wouldnt Bo be someone he likes. He is definately not a bad pass catching RB, and he is a good blocker, He fits the mold, because Gase likes a good rounded back and his power running style complements Drake.

    —————-
I NEVER stated “don’t draft him”. NOTHING would make me happier than to have a MAULING RB. I’m sayin’… I don’t think Scarbrough fits the Gase Offense… nothing more.

  60. D's avatar D says:

Id love for us to be able to draft Allen. I want them to get their guy, so if they would rather have Mayfield, id rather they draft him, or Rosen if its Rosen, but for me Allen is my favorite.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

How do you think we pull off this trade to move up and get a QB because I’m not buying one or two will be there at #11? Trade chart value wouldn’t be crazy but teams are asking for more these days when they know a team wants a QB.

      • D's avatar D says:

The trade value jumps up mostly if you are trying to move up for one of the top two, with 4, as long as the guy we want is still there after 3 are taken i think the trade value will be high but not astronomical. I believe we’d have to give up an exchange of this year’s 1’s, a future 1 and a 3rd to move up to 6th which is where i feel like we would to get one of those guys.

Now im also not saying we have to trade up, we could just take it if its given to us, and if not go with plan B, take BPA and target Luke Falk or Mason Rudolph in the 2nd. I am just saying i would like for us to get Allen, im not saying i feel like we should sell the farm to do it.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

        Agreed.

  61. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m kind of where D is when it comes to the draft. He’s written extensively about it. LOL

What I mean is, go with the flow of who the team drafted and not always acting like you would have done everything differently especially when you don’t have all the intel and why or why not a guy is a fit for the team. These guys do this full-time all year around. The bottom line is does it make the team better in the W/L standings?

    • D's avatar D says:

In the NFL where you produce you you have a short career i feel good about these FO guys and coaches getting the players they think will help them win because if they dont they will be changing teams, at the very least, in a few years. They have all the information at their disposal they need to make those decisions and while its not an exact science, they have more training in the matter than any of us so if they think a guy is worth it, then you have to assume they know what they are doing. I mean we watch 3-4 films on them max, they watch 20+ im sure. They watch them at events like Senior Bowl practices, entire teams of scouts with them, they go to their pro days and watch them. They ask them questions and watch real time answers. Its hard to argue with the fact they know these guys better than us or than we ever could.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

They have scouts at their games for 2-3 years. They have relationships with college coaches and schools. There are not many secrets out there, all NFL teams get the buzz about all these guys and you make your selection when you’re up.

Not saying you can’t do a bad job in the draft, but so far nothing I’ve seen since Gase and Grier were hired has been bad. Some moves didn’t pan out, but every team has that happen. It’s not just us. Just like we’re not the only team that struggles against good TEs. LOL

I am also one who feels throw out last year and move on. It was a shit season for so many reasons.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

So generically every GM will do a good job in the draft and we shouldn’t say anything? What about Ginn’ s family or Eddie Moore being our first pick, because we needed Special Teams? In general I really don’t bitch about our draft, but I’m not buying what you guys are selling.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I already touched on that at the end. My point was it’s on the people making the decisions and the W/L standings. I’m excited about the new draft class. I like a lot of the past two.

  81. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

It’s quite obvious that the one position we haven’t addressed this year is LBer, only having 5 on the roster and probably going into the 53 with 7 there’s a glaring lack of man power at that position which leads me to believe that at #11 we’ll be taking a LBer

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

LOL………… now make that 6 LBers

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Yes, but only if Smith or Edmunds are there, and a top 4 QB isnt. I think last years expected starting LB corps is how they value the position and a good indication of what they’ll try to do this year (draft Raquan, sign Timmons, still had Misi), but not necessarily at 11. And TJ?

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

They might also want to bring TJ down to LB, which I think is a real possibility, especially if an LB isn’t drafted early. With that said we may already have our top 3 LBs already on the roster.

Kenny Vaccaro has played nickel, strong safety, free safety and pseudo-linebacker. So some versatility. Saints reportedly thought he was better closer to line of scrimmage.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Wow another SS and no true FS, but the versatility is there. We tried a young team, an exp DT, now lets try more experience for less money, because we really don’t have a choice at this stage.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

And how would that be to confuse a young QB? Which we may see a couple of in our division.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:
