We did it!!!

psu_orig

I watched HOF Miami Dolphins Center Dwight Stephenson stroll to the podium.  He looked happy.  I know why he was so happy, but I didn’t know then.  He then uttered the words with the 42nd pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins select Mike Gesicki, TE, Penn State.  When he said Mike, my heart raced, and then he actually said GEH-Sick-ee,  I screamed a a scream of happiness, it’s possible Tim who is about 45 miles away may have heard it.  We did what we haven’t been able to do for over a decade since Randy McMichael, we selected a legitimate receiving TE.  I’m happy for Brian in NY, his son, and really, I’m happy for Ryan Tannehill and all Dolphins fans, because this is a gamechanger. It’s the secret sauce we’ve been missing for far too long.  Gesicki will open up that field for us, because he will be that nightmare that NFL teams struggle most to cover, including our own Dolphins defense.  Just his presence on the field will open things up for our RB’s, and our perimeter WR’s.  He will command attention, and that will give other players opportunities they haven’t had here.  I can’t wait!

usa_today_10374890.0

What about me boss?  In the 3rd RD, The Dolphins selected Ohio State LB Jerome Baker.  Baker who is 6’1 229 is a speed player.  He’s not a run stopping thumper, but he’s a chase and tackle guy who can also cover pretty well.  It will be interesting to see how Baker is used, and not to belabor the point, but where exactly does T.J. McDonald fit in?  Seems we keep adding pieces that lessen the need for T.J. with Minkah Fitzpatrick and now LB Jerome Baker.  The Dallas Cowboys want a safety , and we just happen to have one, and the Cowboys have pick #116 in the 4th RD, so maybe a deal can made.  We could get a DT, RB and maybe a QB, so keep your eye on MTP who has obviously been tied up and must be raring to go, if he’s been untied that is.

So far, we’ve done and excellent job in this draft, and I can’t remember the last time I’ve had the luxury of saying that.  Go DOLPHINS!!

                                                          JERSEY STRONG!!!

Without a 5th round pick… our two 4ths should possibly cover two of DT, QB, RB, K (?) … did I just type kicker? lol

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

All make sense, but we have gotten into BPA territory. Same time thinking we might end up with a big old stump of a DT before all is said and done.

This blog is having an UNCANNY draft LOL. well done gentlemen.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I know right … consensus on here was to take 2 TEs, one a speedy seam threat and the other an inline blocker who still has reliable hands.

  28. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Fasano 2.0 which is a good thing

  29. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

So kinda like Fitz he helps at 2 spots .. OL And TE.

  30. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Patriots took a a TE in the 2nd and then another in the 4th in a draft once. Worked out pretty well for them, even if not for one of the TEs.

  31. rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

Another pick I love. I noticed him this year when watching Nelson and McGlinchey. …underrated receiver and good blocker. Nicely done.

  32. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    That one I don’t like!
    OL. DT, QB????????????

  33. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    Biggest need Now? DT?

  34. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

ND TEs who stay healthy tend to be solid players.

oh yeah, who called Alabama, PSU, and ND their axis of evil lmao. fulfilled.

  35. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

What I like about Smythe is he stays with his blocks to the very end of the play and yes he has really good hands as well but only Fasano fast.

  36. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Wyo, I don’t think any of the 5 teams ahead of our pick at #131 will take DT OR QB… so we’d still have our pick imo.

  37. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

  38. rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

    DT please. Hurst or Settle.

  39. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Can this draft get any better?

  40. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

There goes home town boy Ito Smith

  41. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I’d have preferred Kalen Ballage there but oh well Smythe will be a good thing for us.

  42. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If we don’t take Hurst here his red flag may be bigger than we know.

  43. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Yes, I would like DT this pick

  44. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“Smythe is a classic “Y” tight end who carries himself like an offensive lineman. He has the frame, toughness and ability to help do the dirty work as a run blocker for teams in need of toughness at the position. While Smythe can catch what is thrown to him, he’s unlikely to be a targeted pass catcher on the next level. Smythe’s particular talent as a run blocker should create an opportunity to become a solid starter for years to come.”

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

As a pass catcher he’ll never be covered, so you can slip him out from time to time, like 1st and goal at the 1, from a 2 TE set.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

He’ll have 5 catches for the year and get 3 TDs.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

But he’ll be on the field this year, maybe 15-25 plays a game depending on the situation, including running the ball to close out the game.

  45. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    Hurst or Falk.

The Wedge Scouting Report: Kalen Ballage, Arizona State

  74. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Son he runs a 4.46 @ 6’1 227 and he catches anything you throw at him.

  75. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Elite size, speed, and agility combination. Cuts are dynamic, as is his burst once he touches the football. Has the ability to be a better pro than college player.

  76. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Lol….The whiny bunch will have to work really hard to find something to bitch about in this draft no matter what they do from here on out.

And, yes, some of the Jr. GM DeCoder Rings are deserved.

  77. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

I liked many others before Ballege but they are all gone so I am good with the pick. Just wonder what the plan is for DT depth.

  78. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

a rookie is certainly less expensive than going after CJ Anderson

  79. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

We might be getting some Poona later today………

  80. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

    Panthers traded up

  81. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

JM: How do you think playing in the Sun Devils’ system helps get you ready for the next level?
Kalen Ballage: I’ve had the opportunity to play in three different offenses over the last three years. For me, I’ve become adjustable to just about anything. Not only me, but my teammates as well, we’ve been able to fit into different offenses while learning different verbiage three years in a row. I think that’s going to help me out at the next level. I’ve already dealt with learning multiple offenses.

  82. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Good write up, Mike.

This has been a really good draft .

  83. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Ive seen 6’1, 6’2, and 6’3, WTF is his height?

  84. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Settles should be gone by the 6th so I say we should go Poona, OG Adams and QB Ferguson or Benkert in that order to round things out.

  85. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

He had an 8 TD game

  86. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

    cowboys finally take a TE

  87. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Great draft so far all have a good chance at a fair amount of PT. Seems like we’re getting BPA at position of need with a distinct role in mind for each.

  88. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

    Our next picks: #209, #227, #229
70 picks away… YAWWWWN. gonna get some work done so I can watch A’s beat Astros and Dubs beat Pels tonight back to back 🙂

  89. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    Ballage highlights

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

TWICE he has to spin completely around to catch a poorly thrown pass and he does it and still romps for major yardage.

Watch him score off the Wildcat several times. Shades of Ronnie Brown.

  90. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I can just see when the smarter than us guys grade this draft down…….will be “but they could’ve gotten a QB.” Or maybe a DT……which is what they were focusing on before the draft and now want to be right. All makes sense to me at least, except maybe Jerome Baker in the third.

  91. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

    Hurts to the Raiders

  92. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

    Uh oh, run on DT’s

  93. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Hurst to Raiders. Good for them.

  94. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

    And Griffin to Seattle

  95. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Ballage was clocked at 23 mph, when in full stride, faster than anyone in the NFL except Tyreek Hill, whom he outweighs by 40 pounds.

  96. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Ballage looks like he shouldve been a 1st rounder. Still need to see game tape and not just highlights, but what am I missing as far as weaknesses go, Naples?

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Some say he couldn’t always find the hole, but he had 3 different OCs in 3 yrs.
That hole might’ve been a bit imaginary to be kind.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Inconsistent production is what I heard. He might return kicks for us.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

From the tapes looks like Ballage doesn’t have a whole lot of shake in him and not much quick burst either. Still looks awesome in the 4th though.

  97. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

From the interview he’s 6’3 he said.

  98. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

The other negative is he never ran for that many yards in a season, but they used a RB by committee and he split carries.
He only averaged about 160 carries per yr, so he has low mileage on him.
