We did it!!!

psu_orig

I watched HOF Miami Dolphins Center Dwight Stephenson stroll to the podium.  He looked happy.  I know why he was so happy, but I didn’t know then.  He then uttered the words with the 42nd pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins select Mike Gesicki, TE, Penn State.  When he said Mike, my heart raced, and then he actually said GEH-Sick-ee,  I screamed a a scream of happiness, it’s possible Tim who is about 45 miles away may have heard it.  We did what we haven’t been able to do for over a decade since Randy McMichael, we selected a legitimate receiving TE.  I’m happy for Brian in NY, his son, and really, I’m happy for Ryan Tannehill and all Dolphins fans, because this is a gamechanger. It’s the secret sauce we’ve been missing for far too long.  Gesicki will open up that field for us, because he will be that nightmare that NFL teams struggle most to cover, including our own Dolphins defense.  Just his presence on the field will open things up for our RB’s, and our perimeter WR’s.  He will command attention, and that will give other players opportunities they haven’t had here.  I can’t wait!

usa_today_10374890.0

What about me boss?  In the 3rd RD, The Dolphins selected Ohio State LB Jerome Baker.  Baker who is 6’1 229 is a speed player.  He’s not a run stopping thumper, but he’s a chase and tackle guy who can also cover pretty well.  It will be interesting to see how Baker is used, and not to belabor the point, but where exactly does T.J. McDonald fit in?  Seems we keep adding pieces that lessen the need for T.J. with Minkah Fitzpatrick and now LB Jerome Baker.  The Dallas Cowboys want a safety , and we just happen to have one, and the Cowboys have pick #116 in the 4th RD, so maybe a deal can made.  We could get a DT, RB and maybe a QB, so keep your eye on MTP who has obviously been tied up and must be raring to go, if he’s been untied that is.

So far, we’ve done and excellent job in this draft, and I can’t remember the last time I’ve had the luxury of saying that.  Go DOLPHINS!!

                                                          JERSEY STRONG!!!

I like that he’s a grinder in the AZ desert heat with a really upbeat attitude. He loves to practice and loves to lift and loves football.

  2. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I see the stats now, but I like the pick.

  3. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

ok at DT if we don’t get Poona Ford, who is a bit short, or Tim Settle, who is a bit heavy footed, there’s Trenton Thompson and Steven Richardson who I like at DT.

  4. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I see wenoicked a TE and a RB
Smythe is the blocking TE some of you are squealing about
balledge is our big back I would have preferred a couple other Rbs but balledge has talent

  5. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I like this draft….hopefully these guys fulfill their promise. I really have no issues with any of the picks.

  6. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, I forgot to mention this earlier. I didn’t hear your scream on the Gesicki pick because you were locked in your shed. LOL

  7. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

With the exception of Baker, most of the guys we selected have been discussed in this board

Compare that with the ireland days…lol

  8. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Ballage runs a little high when he goes outside first, seems to be waiting for a hole, but otherwise I like the pick and can see him being a feature back at some point. He can catch, Gase prerequisite, and block, so good pick.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

That’s one of my critiques of him too. He’s not exactly known as a good lockeroom presence either. Lost his starting job at ASU at one point

But he’s big and talented and can fit a limited role for us behind drake and Gore

  9. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Because we had needs at every position, it’s easy to like this draft 😛

No i remember one year in the not too distant past when we traded cough cough for a WR when we already had like 10 on staff. This yr has been surgical.

    We HAD to take Minkah.

Anthony Fasano went to Notre Dame….like the symmetry with Smythe on that.

    BALLAGE THE LEADER
Ballage led an otherwise dormant ground game on Thursday, scoring two touchdowns and picking up a key forth down conversion early in the second half.

To Graham however, Ballage’s play on the field was less impressive compared to his improvement in the locker room.

“I was really pleased with the leadership; I was really pleased with the locker room before the game,” Graham said. “Kalen Ballage is probably the most improved guy in the program from every area. Just to see him lead like that was incredible.”

With other team leaders flanking him at the press table on Sunday, Ballage displayed a little bit of his new level-headed approach when evaluated his team’s performance.

  16. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

“I’m really proud of the guys’ heart,” Graham said. “I told them ‘I’m sick of talking about heart,’ but let me tell you, I’m very proud of – not just one side of the ball. Guys gave great heart.”

Graham said freshman quarterback Dillon Sterling-Cole and junior running back Kalen Ballage “played with great courage,”

    We did it!!!

  17. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Ballage, with his history of overcoming illness and injury, also was there to pick [the erratic QB] up and console him outside the visiting locker room of Autzen Stadium.

“I’m not discouraged at all, just passionate,” Ballage said. “I just love my teammates and my coaches to death.”

Ballage praised Sterling-Cole. at ASU’s postgame media availability , rightfully somber, though never resorting to playing the blame game – assuming total accountability.

  18. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Ballage will have Gore to answer to. At least if he really wants to be a pro. Good situation for him.

  19. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    3 picks left
We don’t need to spend one on a kicker, you can pick a kicker up at 7-11, but we did take pinero out to dinner so I’m penciling in Pinero as 7b

    Decent players on the board
Falk, equinamious, Lazard, Poona, fatukasi, Jake Cichy, David Bellamy, will Clapp, skyler Phillips

Those last 2 OL are versatile and can give up depth

I wouldn’t mind one of those big WRs but you know me (piggy bows)

  20. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Seriously I think more than a few people called the Gesicki/Smythe combo

I would have loved Gesicki/ Ian Thomas but I can’t complain about Smythe

  21. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

At least he can run the ball, Damien was a liability running it. Game 1 a couple of years ago, first quarter, 4th and 1, and Damien runs into the back of OL, and it never got any better.

I went to the Alehouse immediately after we picked gesicki to get dinner because I hadn’t eaten and I coulldn’t connect to this site through their wifi. Got a little drunk and stayed out late. Slept in this morning until almost 11. Had ticket to the 12:15 showing of Infinity wars. WTF!? I’ll leave it at that for those who haven;t seen it and are going to. SMH No QB yet huh? Figured we take on in the 4th. We got our pass catching TE (the third best in the draft) and what appears to be a good blocking TE (at least that’s what all his strengths list on his NFL draft evaluation.) Got a fast small LB and a RB. We have a lot of freaking holes still and no quality picks to fill them. 2 TE? tiny line backer?

    Ok, go dolphins….

  42. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Who took John Kelly?

  43. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    Has a finisher’s demeanor as a blocker
    Plays like an offensive lineman
    Technically sound blocker
Hand placement is accurate and he unlocks his hips into opponent
Runs his feet on down blocks until the block is secured
Understands his landmarks and takes proper angles
Excellent timing and radar when working up to linebacker on combos
Plus blocker for the position in-line and on the move
    Trustworthy in pass protection
Was able to work the seam and lay out to make the catch
Unfazed by hitters in the middle of the field

What a difference a couple of years makes, we had 4 5ths 2 years ago.

  45. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Wow – Really happy with our picks! I got busy at work so I missed the Smythe and Ballage picks. That’s 2 guys I actually wanted for us, Gesicki and Ballage. Very pleased! Like the Smythe pick too, giving us the receiving TE and the blocking TE. Ballage totally reminds me of David Johnson

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

He does and that is his stated role model out in the desert.
Plus he has a close mentor type relationship with Le’Veon Bell.

I don’t See Johnson or Bell, what i see is a good between the tackles running, but please dont start out running wide.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Steve – He catches the ball really well out of the backfield, and his size in addition to his receiving skills are like David Johnson

  46. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

  47. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

You can tell it was a down year for Clemson.
Only 3 picks so far … 1 OLB in the 3rd and 2 WRs in the 6th.
Not much “Sr Leadership” last year.

  48. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Scouts seem to agree that last thing Gesicki is is Gronk. He’s the new Jimmy Graham.

  49. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

He has been practicing that hesitation move waiting for the blocks to clear like Bell does.
He also is highly adept at pass catching like those guys do. Wildcat. Long Speed. All that.

  50. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Stanger – Who wouldn’t sign up for a young Jimmy Graham?

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Gesicki scored 1800 points in High School basketball.
      That takes coordination and speed.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

You know I wanted him and have been crying for that kinda of TE. Think he is gonna be split out a lot though……almost explains why we picked up Smythe. 🙂

Hilarious Now you have to figure out the whole master storyline and see how it will itself through all the different franchises and tied them all together There are some you don’t need to tie in like some of the earlier Spiderman and for the most part for some reason X-Men which seems to be separate in the universe

    • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

Yea, only the MCU. That doesn’t include X-men for now. Also, only Spider-Man homecoming falls under the MCU. You can also get away with not seeing the Hulk movie with Ed Norton.

Man you know the time in between franchises is so strong in this one that they basically can’t have any other Marvel movies come out until the sequel to this one. Unless those movies in the other franchises continue this story line. I also wonder if they are going to tie in the TV series Marvel series to the Thanos story line. When the infinity wars played out in the comic book series 1520 years ago it did across all the comics that I read that the time I had mail subscriptions for most of the main Marvel characters at the time plus even offshoots like alpha flight
