We did it!!!

psu_orig

I watched HOF Miami Dolphins Center Dwight Stephenson stroll to the podium.  He looked happy.  I know why he was so happy, but I didn’t know then.  He then uttered the words with the 42nd pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins select Mike Gesicki, TE, Penn State.  When he said Mike, my heart raced, and then he actually said GEH-Sick-ee,  I screamed a a scream of happiness, it’s possible Tim who is about 45 miles away may have heard it.  We did what we haven’t been able to do for over a decade since Randy McMichael, we selected a legitimate receiving TE.  I’m happy for Brian in NY, his son, and really, I’m happy for Ryan Tannehill and all Dolphins fans, because this is a gamechanger. It’s the secret sauce we’ve been missing for far too long.  Gesicki will open up that field for us, because he will be that nightmare that NFL teams struggle most to cover, including our own Dolphins defense.  Just his presence on the field will open things up for our RB’s, and our perimeter WR’s.  He will command attention, and that will give other players opportunities they haven’t had here.  I can’t wait!

usa_today_10374890.0

What about me boss?  In the 3rd RD, The Dolphins selected Ohio State LB Jerome Baker.  Baker who is 6’1 229 is a speed player.  He’s not a run stopping thumper, but he’s a chase and tackle guy who can also cover pretty well.  It will be interesting to see how Baker is used, and not to belabor the point, but where exactly does T.J. McDonald fit in?  Seems we keep adding pieces that lessen the need for T.J. with Minkah Fitzpatrick and now LB Jerome Baker.  The Dallas Cowboys want a safety , and we just happen to have one, and the Cowboys have pick #116 in the 4th RD, so maybe a deal can made.  We could get a DT, RB and maybe a QB, so keep your eye on MTP who has obviously been tied up and must be raring to go, if he’s been untied that is.

So far, we’ve done and excellent job in this draft, and I can’t remember the last time I’ve had the luxury of saying that.  Go DOLPHINS!!

                                                          JERSEY STRONG!!!

At least he’s got speed, let’s see if he can develop quickly.

    The need for speed.

    Is “very meh” an oxymoron?

He’s a decent return man too I think

Pete Carrol is a dick, but yoy got to give him props for keeping the Griffen twins together.

I think it’s a smart move in more than just a few ways. It will probably bring out the best in both of them just on a psych level, but it will be very hard if the ever get to a point of wanting to cut either of them so there is some risk too

  6. D's avatar D says:

Probably get ST contribution from him right off. Idthink of it as drafting a replacement for Thomas

  7. D's avatar D says:

Y’all ready for those 7th round gems!!!! Btw it’s scary, MTP hasn’t popped a single trade up or back this to.e around

Maybe Gabe Wright is in the mix at DT. He was a former 4th rd pick of the Lions in 2015. In fact they traded up for him sending a 3rd rd pick to PHI in 2016.

Posted elite athletic testing numbers on-par with the best LB testing at the Combine. Ran a 4.58 with a 38-inch vertical leap and a 10-foot-7 broad jump. Has big hands and above average upper body strength. Plays with good knee bend. Tackle machine in high school and has carried that over for four years at Ohio. Impressive production included 43.5 career tackles for loss, 18 sacks, and 7 interceptions. Coaches love his football intelligence and he makes the defensive calls. Willing to strike with some force when squeezing his gap against pulling guards. Former high school safety with feel for where quarterback wants to go with the football. Gets early jumps into space in zone coverage and has ability to handle man coverage

*2017 College Senior year update – Jason Sanders is the best kickoff kicker in College Football and one of the best field goal kickers around. He led all of college football (FBS-FCS-D2-D3-etc) on kickoffs for touchbacks % as a junior (going into last 2 game was at 89+% and finished at 83%). He did it again as a senior finishing up just over 81%. He finished up 111/112 college career PATs, and 81/85 (3 blocks) in High School. He hit a monster 53-yard game winning field goal during his collegiate senior season on 9-23-17. He’s played in some of the biggest venues including Kyle Field (99,000 in attendance on 11/11/17) at Texas A&M and has performed well and enjoyed the big game atmosphere. He has the leg to make 65-70 yard field goals and routinely hits kickoffs 70+ yards with 4.1-4.2 seconds hang-time. I’ve seen him kick many kickoffs over 4.4 seconds and distances up to 80 yards. His leg is freakish, but his ability to stay calm & poised is what impresses me the most. I believe NFL prospect Jason Sanders will not only make it into the NFL this year, but will thrive for many years to come.

I think Fins will get a polite “B” average with highest score a “B+” … I think it’s at worst an “A-” but realistically a solid “A”. I would not have said this in about a decade. I actually put last year’s draft as my second favorite of the last decade.

  56. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Tannenbaum said they like some of the young OL already on the team mentioning Eric Smith, Zach Sterup and having Larsen back healthy.

If you look at it, we already have our game day 7 in Tunsil, Sitton, Kilgore, Davis, James, Larsen and Young. So there will be competition for probably only two more spots.

But you didn’t want anything to do with the day 1 and 2 OL
After that, those are wasted player
      Everyone was reaching for OL

I mean if Nelson fell to us – I’m all over it
      But that didn’t happen
The only argument for a player that was available to us was Daniels

When Ragnow and Price went off the board In the first and Hernandez early in the 2nd – OL was not a realistic pick

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed. We’ll add some UDFAs and maybe even a vet along the way. Like I said, barring injury there are likely only two more spots open.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

That’s not the point, the point is you have to take lots of OL in the draft or the Doofus Brigade…then when they all suck, it’s the Doofus Brigade couldn’t scout an OL if their lives depended on it. In other words bitch to bitch.

  60. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I can’t believe Jason Sanders lasted until the 7th round, dude’s gotta leg.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s why we drafted him. He’s awesome on kickoffs and like most young Kickers they need to improve their consistency and technique on FGs and now Xpts. He’s Rizzi’s project and he’s a good STs coach.

  61. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I see that ESPN is comparing Woodside to Case Keenum… no wonder I like him, LOL.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s all about Tannehill being good to go and continuing where he left off. Then Osweiler and Fales competing for the backup job. To me they can be just as effective as Matt Moore when he was better. He really looked sluggish to me last year and could not avoid pressure very well. I think it was time as age caught up with him.

QB will likely be a high priority next season.

  62. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

    Gotta beat Wyoming to it:

My first 4 draft picks for 2019:

  64. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    QB: Kurt Benkert
WR: Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Jester Weah, Damion Ratley
    CB: Tarvarus McFadden, Jalen Davis
    DT: Tyler Lancaster
    OT: Brett Toth, Desmond Harrison
    OG: Tony Adams, Toby Weathersby
    C: Evan Brown

  65. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I loved this draft, well I seem to every year mostly, but this one seemed like everything fell in place for us, unlike other years. Minkah should’ve gone earlier and is going to give us some deep coverage we aren’t used to among other things, Gesicki easily could’ve gone in the 1st and will let us forget Landry on 3rd down. Other picks of need blocking TE was there for the taking, and he’s supposed to be an underrated pass catcher too. Baker a cover 21st century LB that we desperately needed. With Ballage we finally have 3 RBs that could carry the load for any given week, and he can catch. Don’t know much about Armstrong, but with sub-4.4 speed he should be a good ST player. Col. Sanders can kick like no one else, something we haven’t had for quite a while. Poling I’m not real impressed with yet, but he at least seems like he mostly in the right place at the right time, but he’s going to have to stick his nose in there a little more instead of just watching as a ball carrier is being taken to the ground.

  66. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Tim, I think QB pickings are going to be slim next year. Part of the reason why guys like QB Clayton Thorson went back to play their senior year.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You won’t know until they play the season. The thing that people have to rap their head around is, the team likes Tannehill. I’m talking looking for a quality developmental QB next year, not going all out for a top of the draft guy.

But this team will have such a different look then in 2017, we have no idea who they are as a team. Lots of turnover the last two years. Common with a 3rd year HC. It’s exciting to me because I do see the upside for a good season.

Gesicki adds a whole new dynamic at TE and for the offense that we haven’t had in quite some time. The other guys we tried who had ability just didn’t have it anymore for all sorts of reasons. We have so much more promise at TE heading into 2018.

I don’t even consider Gray a TE, he’s more FB/H-back and short yardage back who plays STs. Gray makes the team along with 3-4 other TEs.
