Dolphins 2018 Post NFL Draft Outlook

I’d say we had what most of us here at FU believe was a very successful draft, and for those of you have been here a long time, which is most of you, to get any kind of consensus on our drafts is normally impossible.  Despite that fact, along with the return of our starting QB, Las Vegas oddsmakers have us winning only 6 games.  In Tannehill’s worst season we were 6-10, not coincidentally, that was Joe Philbin’s last year as Head Coach of the Miami Dolphins.  I’m sure there are 3 major factors as to why they have us so low, and I believe first and foremost it’s the health of our QB Ryan Tannehill, and how long he’s been away from the game, 19 games to be exact.  When we cut Suh, we lost one of our best defensive players.  When we chose not to pay Jarvis Landry $15M + per season, we lost one of our most productive offensive players.

We know the losses, but I feel like they don’t consider the gains we’ve made strongly enough.  I think we finally got the back end help we’ve been missing here in Miami, and I’m pretty confident that Minkah Fitzpatrick will be playing a lot, right from the start.  He will instantly prove he’s better than anyone else we have as a deep safety, or even a LOS cover man on a TE, or bigger slot WR.  He will have a ton of opportunities, and will make the best of them.  I think Ryan Tannehill is healthy and ready to go, and although there is so much worry his wretched knee can’t hold up, look at Frank Gore who shredded his knees in college at U of Miami, and is still playing in the NFL 14 years later.  There was nothing special or unusual about Tannehill’s injury, and I say once again, it wasn’t two separate injuries, he had a slight tear that he tried to rehab without surgery, and then it finally tore later on.  Not devastating, it’s like a button on your jacket that’s loose, and then one day it just FALLS OFF!  It’s still just one button, and yes it was disheartening when Tannehill went down, it was a run of the mill knee injury,

In addition to Fitzpatrick and Tannehill, we finally drafted that receiving TE that gives all NFL DC’s nightmares.  We’ve been terrorized for years by them, but now we have one of our very own.  Mike Gesicki will make a difference here from day one.  I know they say TE’s historically start slow in the NFL, but if you watch the NY Giants,  you’d know that Evan Engram, a smaller version of Gesicki had 64 receptions and 722 yards and 6 TD’s last season.  I think Gesicki can easily duplicate that or better that.  He will additionally open the offense for everyone else.  Once he’s out there tearing up the middle of the field, he will garner more attention, which in turn will open things up for the run game, and our perimeter receivers, Parker and Stills, and also for short passes and screens to Albert Wilson and Jakeem Grant.

We have had lots of problems covering TE’s, and RB’s and we’ve seen LB Kiko Alonso burnt far too often.  The addition of Fitzpatrick and also LB Jerome Baker gives us flexibility.  I think we’re going to try and figure out who our primary LOS cover guys will be in both nickel and dime formations.  It might change a lot, but they have to identify which guys can get it done. Fitzpatrick, Baker, McDonald will all get the chance to be on the field more, since in today’s NFL, offenses operate with 3, 4 and 5 receiver sets so often that teams are in the nickel and dime more than ever.  We know what the issue is, and they drafted talent to combat it, in addition to signing T.J. McDonald last year.  You could even throw LB Stephone Anthony in the mix, big, fast LB who can cover.

We didn’t replace the huge hole in the DL after releasing Ndamukong Suh.  The fact is, even if we took Vita Vea or Da’Ron Payne, we still wouldn’t have filled that hole.  Suh was a beast, he played a ridiculous amount of snaps throughout his entire career, and easily led the Dolphins in that category.  The philosophy has changed, and we’re going to rotate fresh players in more often from now on.  At the moment, that’s Jordan Phillips, Davon Godchaux, Vincent Taylor, Gabe Wright and also DE/DT William Hayes.  Also keep in mind the cap money we get after June 1st, and I won’t be surprised in the least if we pick up a DT in FA at that point.  After the draft, veterans are often cut, so we’ll have some choices to bolster the DL.

I love the Kalen Ballage pick.  I know I’ve said it a bunch of times, but watch the kid play, and he’s a lot like Arizona’s David Johnson.  He’s a very reliable receiver, he has some giddyup running a 4.46 40 at 6’2 228.  He’s a tough short yardage back, but also one who has the breakaway speed to take it the distance.  Ditto on the pick of Durham Smythe, TE.  He’s the blocking TE to replace Anthony Fasano, and he’s a decent receiver as well.  When we’re running the ball, Smythe will be the in line blocking TE, and I’m sure there will be formations with both Smythe and Gesicki, with Gesicki split out.  You can run or pass from that formation, and also keep in mind that although Gesicki wasn’t asked to block much at Penn State, he will block here in the NFL.  He won’t be Durham Smythe, but he will block.

We also bolstered special teams in the draft with the selections of LB Jerome Baker, Cornell Armstrong, Quentin Poling, and K Jason Sanders.  In addition, I think we also got some help on the offensive line.  Acquiring Josh Sitton, one of the best pass blocking OG’s in the NFL, we definitely improved.  We got an OC we can count on being there the whole season, and who will be able to practice with his linemates when we traded for Daniel Kilgore.  LT Laremy Tunsil will be a better player having LG Josh Sitton next to him, teaching him his responsibilities and of course, having better play next to him.  If Ja’Wuan James is healthy, he will be a good player playing for his next contract, a good spot for us to be in.  Hopefully we both benefit by that, and we re-sign James after a great season.  Right guard is a question mark, but we have promise in up and comer Jesse Davis and veteran Ted Larsen.  Between those 2, they should be able to hold down that spot. Also, maybe last year’s draftee OG Isaac Asiata enters the mix and surprises.

6 wins?  FU Las Vegas!

Came in as a 4th round pick and being reported as we’re giving up a late 2019 pick. Sounds like good value filling a big hole in more ways than one

He was a backup in DET, so somewhat expendable. I hope it’s a 7th, which would be fine.

      • ukfinfan's avatar ukfinfan says:

If it’s a 7th MTP hit a home run on this one.

Spence, 26, was a fourth-round pick of Tampa Bay in 2013 who started 11 games for the Lions last season, finishing with 19 solo tackles and 20 assists. He appeared in all 16 games in 2017.
He’s from Fort Walton Beach High School.

Spence signed a three-year deal last year and earned bonuses based on playing time that would have pumped his $2.4 million salary to $3.15 million, but the Lions evidently didn’t want to pay that. Reports out of Detroit described the Lions’ reasoning as unclear.
Spence was an instant starter as a rookie with the Bucs, finishing with 29 total tackles and one sack. He matched his career high of three sacks in 2014. He joined the Lions for 2017 on a three-year, $9 million contract.

We also have two 7th rd picks in 2019, ours and one from CLE for Landry.

  6. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ken – It was either pay Landry close to $16M per year, or do what we did. I think we made the right choice

  7. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ken, Landry has never been all-pro and was never a first selection pro bowler, he was always an addition when other WRs opted out.

You have to look at it from the cap perspective and the addition of two players who should contribute quite a bit this year. That’s how I look at the value. I think it worked out fine because we now have new TE options to help move the chains. Our offense will look a lot different this year and I don’t think we’ll miss what Landry does.

MF13ss, if it is in fact only a 7th (or even 6th) round pick I think it is a great trade and very savvy way of acquiring players. He did the same thing with our best run stopping DE, William Hayes last season by swapping 7th round picks. SWAPPING.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Quinn for a 4th and a swap of 6th’s. These deals are when a team wants to move on from a player not because they’re bad but not good system fits and they don’t want the salaries. If we’re cool with what they make it’s an easy trade.

I can’t see anyone being against the Spence trade. It makes sense on so many levels and isn’t expensive compensation or with the salary cap. A 26 year old vet with 5 years experience is what we needed to add to our DT group. It fits with our no big contract approach and guys doing their jobs.

  45. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

“If we’re cool with what they make it’s an easy trade.”…

Tim, I think it’s a great tool for teams. They get something, even if it is a “nearly worthless” draft pick rather than nothing at all and the receiving team doesn’t have to compete for the player in free agency. For the cost of only a “nearly worthless” draft pick.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We saw a lot of trades like this all across the league. Much more player trading the last few years than ever before. It’s basically low draft compensation for non-system fits and cap considerations. Like they say, it’s takes two to tango. Spence didn’t fit what Patricia wants on defense but he did for us. Good trade for both teams.

The Landry trade landed us Smythe and Spence at need positions and we still have a full 7 round draft in 2019. We have yet to have less than 7 draft picks in a year since MTP has been here. That absolutely reckless guy. 😉

Next year in the 1st round we draft one of the Clemson DL or equivalent, and he becomes the starter and Spence is still there as a rotational player and role model at back-up pay.
Or Spence plays ok this year but is not worth keeping, so we ditch him as soon as we draft the star rookie, no fuss no muss.

Trading a 2019 7th round pick for a 26 yr old DT who has proven he can START on an NFL team is a DAMN GOOD TRADE!! Name the number of 7th round picks who became starters, or even made the team and stuck for more than a year….

This was brilliant “insurance” imo. Even better than taking an unproven rookie in 4th round or later in this year’s draft. Now… let’s see what might be up their sleeve for some OL depth.

This was brought up a while back, we need to be able to get these guys the ball where they’re productive. Game plan around their strengths.

If we could add 1 more player at any position and still be under the cap, who would you want

Aaron Rodgers. I don’t think this meets the intent of your question, but it is my answer.

Looks like aren’t done at DT Terrell McClain in for a visit today. All the bad pub about not getting a QB and DT in the draft, but our FO isn’t close to being done yet.

MTP seems like he’s in a prove it year, while Grier seems to be an Ozzie Newsome in the making, very sensible and smart. I like the combination of Gase and Grier, just better done.

  75. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  76. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I’m not sold on Gase yet. I had very high hopes the first year, and although our offense wasn’t quite as offensive as his second year, it wasn’t good enough. (Just good enough to beat an easy schedule and back into the playoffs) His second season our offense was truly offensive. So I am waiting to see what the “offensive guru” produces this year.

I HATED a lot of the play calling the first two year. HATED IT! But, then again if it had been executed properly maybe I wouldn’t have noticed, or maybe even liked it.

He has this year to convince me. Playoffs or I turn on him. Just being honest.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

that “wise old man”s saying was wrong so how wise could it have been?
I hope your boy-crush works out, but I’m not holding my breath.

Of course we didn’t have one of the best players in the league at WR screens when we kept trying and failing at them again and again and again last year, but now we have Albert Wilson so maybe they will work? IDK…

Shhhh, he’s very wise, but he’s not as old as I am

Mike, I wasn’t arguing the old part (he is that, even if he isn’t as old as you, who is?) I was arguing the wisdom part. We are talking about a guy who thinks a QB with a lower passer rating, lower yards per game, lower completion percentage by a good margin and a higher Int to TD ratio than Tannehill is better than him. This is a guy who thought spending 17% of the salary cap on a guy that produced 36 tackles and 5 sacks per year was a grand thing! Wisdom? I don’t think so. Great guy? Yeah! wise? no.
