Miami Dolphins Special Teams 2018

Defense?  Check!  Offense?  Check!  Now it’s time to take a look at our special teams unit.  Returning for his 15th NFL season is long snapper John Denney.  As any good Dolphins fan knows, this guy isn’t just hiking the ball, this guy hustles downfield on every punt and makes his shares of tackles too.  The Dolphins as per usghe brought in “competition” for Denney, or more like insurance in the form of one LS Lucas Gravelle out of TCU.  Gravelle was a 2018 UDFA.

Matt Haack will return as the punter, and just so Stanger knows, Haack will be wearing #2 this season, showing no respect to future ring of honor punter Brandon Fields.  Or maybe he wears it out of respect and love for Fields, not sure.  In the 7th RD, Miami most likely landed their starting place kicker in Jason Sanders out of New Mexico.  Sanders has a very strong leg, and his kickoffs are always deep.  His longest college FG was a 53 yarder, but in practice, he’s hit FG’s beyond 60 and close to 70.  The Dolphins also brought in UDFA K Greg Joseph from FAU to provide some competition for Sanders.  There are however also always a few veteran kickers waiting for a team to lose a K to injury, or just an outright cut due to poor performance.  Matt Haack will continue to be the holder on FG’s.

With Jarvis Landry out of the picture, Jakeem Grant will take over the primary return duties on both punts and kickoffs.  With all the changes, it’s hard to know whether the new return rules will be advantageous or not for the ultra fast Grant, but it seems to indicate that it might.   With the kickoff team unable to get a running start, that should give the receiving team just a little more time to get up some speed after the catch.  On the other hand, the new rule is that if the ball touches the end zone on a kickoff it will be ruled as a touchback, so if the ball bounces past the goal line on a kickoff, it is dead, and declared a touchback.  Kenyan Drake will join Grant as the other returner on kickoffs, and at least at the moment, Senorise Perry is behind the aforementioned 2 on the return depth chart.

As far as players who will be counted on to be special teams aces is returning veteran CB/S Walt Aikens, LB Chase Allen, LB Mike Hull,  veteran LB Terence Garvin who came over from Seattle, rookie LB Quentin Poling, CB Torry McTyer and possibly rookie CB’s Cornell Armstrong and Jalen Davis.  I say possible, because we don’t know yet whether they will all be on the roster come final cuts.

Last year, the Dolphins had one of their best kicking performances in a while from veteran K Cody Parkey.  The Dolphins chose not to allocate money towards a K and let Parker walk, so we all have to hope that move doesn’t come back to bite us in the ass.  Young Jason Sanders has a tough act to follow after the excellence of Parkey.  Last year, P Matt Haack had an OK year, he wasn’t great, he wasn’t poor either.  Haack averaged 44.5 yards per punt, with a 40.7 net average

The big questions on special teams are as follows.  Is Jakeem Grant ready for prime time, without Jarvis Landry to lean on in big spots?  Is Jason Sanders going to get the job done well enough to keep his job through the preseason?  Will Jason Sanders adequately replace the excellence of Cody Parkey?  Will the new kickoff rules help us or hurt us? Stay tuned Dolphins fans, OTA’s are going on as you read this, so keep your eyes on the reports to see what’s happening.

Good write up, Mike. But we also signed K Greg Joseph of FAU to compete with Sanders.

  2. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Haack went with #2?????? SMH Might as well line up Osweiler in #13 too.

Didn’t Amendola return punts for the Pats? I could see him taking over in the Landry hands punt return role. Love Grants’ moves once he has the ball in his hands, but his hands and decisions have not been a strong point.

So the Miami Dolphins have perfect attendance at today’s OTA.

Nice that we have FULL attendance at OTA’s. Maybe we have the right guys in place now, a TEAM.

We at least don’t have Suh on the team anymore, but guy did make it happen whatever he was up too.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Stanger – Suh did, but that doesn’t mean he was a team leader, or really even part of the team. Suh did what Suh wanted. He didn’t worry about fitting in or being one of the guys, or being a mentor to anyone, he just came in and did his job, and did it well. He minimally affected other players.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

My only real problem with Suh was the price tag……but there I am proving what teams do — talent comes with its own privileges.

“Kneeling” rule was adopted. While a lot of teams took different approaches…..it is exactly what Ross did. Almost makes you think we have a smart owner.

“Following a year of hand-wringing and disagreement inside the league’s ownership ranks, team owners approved a new measure on Wednesday that gives players the option of staying in the locker room during the national anthem if they don’t wish to stand during the ceremonies. Under the new rule, players who choose to be on the field during the anthem will be required to stand.”

      • herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

Dr Stanger: 4 OTC Ibuprofen (200 mg) = 1 Motrin (800 mg). Total daily amount is the same. NSAIDs (Aspirin, Naproxen, Ibuprofen) should be avoided pre and post op.

Call me old school but I think aspirin works better than Tylenol or Ibuprofen.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

On injuries like that prefer the anti-inflammatory aspect versus aspirin or others. But just my take when it comes to soft tissue stuff. Didn’t even know there was 800 mg Motrin though…must be new. But matches up with the scripts got back in the day. Thanks Herd…..you obviously know a bunch and just taught me some.

I’m HAPPY that the NFL has approved penalties for those who kneel for the National Anthem. The game is NOT a place to make a political/social statement… do that $#!t on YOUR dime, a$$holes, and at the risk of your personal brand, not the league’s brand.

MANY fans have tuned out the NFL due to these liberals, the same way award shows are being tuned out at a record pace. It’s killing the NFL as a whole, and the league had to take action to preserve itself.

This is the FIRST time Goodell has ever done ANYTHING right! But let it be known, it was only to protect himself and his falling ratings, via the demand of the owners.

Ask him if he would have done it differently if he knew he was going to be out an entire year by making that decision and see how he answers. I get its a hindsight is 20/20 thing, but thats the question they were really asking not the one he answered

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think the answer is obvious.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Absolutely D – He didn’t really answer the question, and if he did, he answered incorrectly!

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The first thing he said was obviously the way it turned out maybe we missed something. Then said but going back I would do it the same way because everyone was on board through the process. He answered both hindsight and before knowing the results. Not sure what you guys are missing with what he said.

Obviously if he knew what the outcome would be not having the surgery he would have done it differently.

  31. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And I’d like to chime in on the Supreme Court voting in favor of sports betting by state. Yeah… NOTHING could go wrong, right? I see even Jerry Jones is in favor of this decision, stating that the integrity of the game will never be questioned.

UMMM… Jerry Jones, the integrity of the game has ALREADY been questioned and very well documented. What’s more, we’ve already seen the FIX in other major sports… and it’s VERY WELL DOCUMENTED.

If some of y’all thought the NFL was somewhat rigged, there will be MANY MORE knowing that the NFL is rigged after this Supreme Court decision… thus, setting precedence for other states.

We’ve sen MLB go through this several times, we’ve sen the NBA go through this, we’ve seen WWE go through this, we’ve seen professional boxing go through this several times… and now we’re witnessing the demise of our beloved NFL sport go through this.

It’s not a matter of individual ethics (hey, if one wants to gamble, go for it!), but the sport is going to be further compromised by FAT CATS, trying to control the outcome of games for their $$$.

It’s really not that difficult to understand! I’m about the PURITY of SPORT… not fixed BS. 😡

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m not as concerned about the game being fixed as I am making gambling more widespread will destroy more lives. Yes people are responsible for their actions, but increasing a vice for profit over morals isn’t a good thing IMO. I don’t want to hear how much we care about the children anymore. We don’t!

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Been sports books in Vegas for many, many years. And anyone wanting to fix a game could just bet there or with the outside the law bookies. Not sure what difference this makes M13….but maybe you see an angle I don’t.

I would say it’s not terrible, I was just prepping to paint, and I was scraping paint off, and then wood starting chipping off as well, so the surface is going to brutally uneven, and at the moment, it’s pretty difficult to sand properly, there’s no room between the top step and the doorstep itself.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Capital and family trip. We did the Atlanta capital already, did Savannah for the first time. Nashville, WV, VA and down the east coast all the way to Key West. Saw Mike’s picture on the wall of shame in South of the Border SC…saw about a hundred gators along 75 through alligator alley.

Sonny – Concrete now, but they’re going to do some masonry with pavers. I suppose they can build it right up under the doorstep, like in this picture.

  67. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Steve – Huh? Why was my pic in the Wall of Shame in SC?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I know that, I just don’t get it. I want to get it. lol

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The wall of shame is a wall filled with pictures, generally for those that do a food challenge, think man vs food, and fail. South of the Border, I’m sure you know, is a tourist trap where they sell fireworks, across the NC border, it was a place we stopped.

  68. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Bookman – No problem bro, and I even put it at the bottom of the article for you, and anyone else who had questions.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Well he’s looking for new parents now
So if you want to adopt him and take him in….lol

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

        LOL.

It’s funny because my 23 Y/O moved back in last year. I’m going to start looking at him sideways now, wondering….

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

The post article says he moved in with his parents 8 years ago

        So basically after college

People go through tough times and that happens at all different times, but this guy was basically like “I plan to move out” and said he had $

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

lol, yeah, that dude claims he is a ‘successful’ businessman.

Despite never having taken a snap at linebacker, even in a preseason game, McMillan is clearly a defensive leader. He was in control on the practice field on Wednesday.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Even though with no playing experience, he got the same birds eye view as Tannehill from a visual perspective. They couldn’t do the physical so they immersed themselves in the mental and concepts part of the game. McMillan was in the lead as our MLB out of TC and into the PS for a reason. This is why. 🙂

    TWO stats to mull over.
    1) Lightning are 3-0 in game 7’s at home.
    2) Steven Stamkos has played a total of 5 game 7’s. He’s got 0 goals and 0 assists in those 5 games.

  76. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

It’s ok guys, Piggy and I have it covered. Concerned about the injury bug again this year I asked Piggy to fly in and fumigate the practice facility and stadium.

    The bugs had no chance!

Let Ryan Tannehill show us who Ryan is instead of all of us speculating about everything. That’s how he looks at it, we should too.

He’s never had the chance to sit back and watch before last year, so yeah let’s SEE the result.

  81. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

New left guard Josh Sitton is running the offensive line.
Loggains coached Sitton for two years in Chicago and loves him. “He’s surly, he speaks his mind and he’s really intelligent,” he said. “You guys are going to have a lot of fun with him.” He’s the new leader of the line, replacing Mike Pouncey. Loggains is energized by seeing talented young linemen like Laremy Tunsil and Ja’Wuan James learning from him already in the short time he’s been here.

    ^^^^^^^ THIS!!!

I also read another article that referenced the young WR’s already emulating Amendola’s approach and “doing little things” they see he does.

    LEADERSHIP

  83. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

One of the Dolphins’ biggest personnel moves this offseason was signing bear-in-a-man-costume Josh Sitton to play left guard.

    Funny line Jason.

  84. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It may be nothing but hype, but these reports coming out of OTAs have got me excited about this year’s team, and itching for our season to start.

  85. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

In the same article as the quote about Sitton above Loggains talks about how he excited by the speed on our team. shhhhwwing!

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Speed kills, and it also opens things up. If RT really has learned how to command an offense, we could have a fun season.

  86. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

the reports coming out do seem more positive than we’ve seen in years. It is my perception as well.

  87. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I can’t shake watching Landry in the last Pro Bowl. He’s going full speed while everyone else is just going through the motions, and he’s getting no where. Yeah he caught his usual 7 yard passes, but in the grand scheme he was insignificant.

The comic book character legion is a great character and out of this world complex
Really hard to turn that into a show
And even harder to sustain a regular audience

That shit is off the wall

From Sitton to Amendola to Gore, leadership is starting to show.

I really think if they can accomplish cutting down dumb penalties they are going to be much better

I hope the new players bring that

I’ll be watching closely for a reduction of penalties early next season
and if it doesn’t happen – I’ll be critical

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Kilgore who is a solid starting center that doesn’t have to be limited should help. 🙂

The team decided we’re not paying Pouncey doing that. Kilgore had nothing but good things to say about Pouncey. Classy guy.

SMH @ Omar. I don’t expect him to be a cheerleader, but he IS a cheerleader when it suits HIS agenda.

Somebody dubbed him “Agenda Man” back in the day and I don’t recall who it was… but that dubbing was RIGHT on target. I didn’t agree with it at that time, but time has caused me to see correctly. Omar pizzes me off more than anything these days… he and I NEVER had a falling out of any sort, but I’ve grown so much since the SS days. It actually became embarrassing for me, trying to defend him in lieu of all his personal agendas.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

He got really obnoxious when he went to twitter

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

VERY right! I believe that was probably the so-called ‘turning point’ for Omar. He began acting like a high-school student once he took to Twitter, talking DOWN to everybody and everything.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

However, Omar ALWAYS treated me with dignity and respect on Twitter… I just didn’t like how he treated others.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I know what you mean. He’s on the BLM train. His tweets are about sneakers, injustice (black folks related), rap/hip hop and then some Dolphins intel. He’s a very selective individual.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I don’t mind him voicing his opinion on other matters outside of football at all. It’s his condescending tone that pizzes me off. That, and his VERY RADICAL political viewpoints.

He’s never had to endure “the struggle”, as it were… and I’ve probably been called a nigger 10x more than he ever had been. He’s soft as tissue, frontin’ like he’s a real victim… I don’t care for that nonsense… nor do I care for the victim mentality.

That message is being lost through anger and agendas. I’m not buying it. Progress has been made. More work to do but to dwell on selective negativity turns me off. It makes you jaded. Sad stuff!

It’s amazing that we’re so divided as a country that we can’t come together on basic infrastructure. Yikes!
