Miami Dolphins Special Teams 2018

Defense?  Check!  Offense?  Check!  Now it’s time to take a look at our special teams unit.  Returning for his 15th NFL season is long snapper John Denney.  As any good Dolphins fan knows, this guy isn’t just hiking the ball, this guy hustles downfield on every punt and makes his shares of tackles too.  The Dolphins as per usghe brought in “competition” for Denney, or more like insurance in the form of one LS Lucas Gravelle out of TCU.  Gravelle was a 2018 UDFA.

Matt Haack will return as the punter, and just so Stanger knows, Haack will be wearing #2 this season, showing no respect to future ring of honor punter Brandon Fields.  Or maybe he wears it out of respect and love for Fields, not sure.  In the 7th RD, Miami most likely landed their starting place kicker in Jason Sanders out of New Mexico.  Sanders has a very strong leg, and his kickoffs are always deep.  His longest college FG was a 53 yarder, but in practice, he’s hit FG’s beyond 60 and close to 70.  The Dolphins also brought in UDFA K Greg Joseph from FAU to provide some competition for Sanders.  There are however also always a few veteran kickers waiting for a team to lose a K to injury, or just an outright cut due to poor performance.  Matt Haack will continue to be the holder on FG’s.

With Jarvis Landry out of the picture, Jakeem Grant will take over the primary return duties on both punts and kickoffs.  With all the changes, it’s hard to know whether the new return rules will be advantageous or not for the ultra fast Grant, but it seems to indicate that it might.   With the kickoff team unable to get a running start, that should give the receiving team just a little more time to get up some speed after the catch.  On the other hand, the new rule is that if the ball touches the end zone on a kickoff it will be ruled as a touchback, so if the ball bounces past the goal line on a kickoff, it is dead, and declared a touchback.  Kenyan Drake will join Grant as the other returner on kickoffs, and at least at the moment, Senorise Perry is behind the aforementioned 2 on the return depth chart.

As far as players who will be counted on to be special teams aces is returning veteran CB/S Walt Aikens, LB Chase Allen, LB Mike Hull,  veteran LB Terence Garvin who came over from Seattle, rookie LB Quentin Poling, CB Torry McTyer and possibly rookie CB’s Cornell Armstrong and Jalen Davis.  I say possible, because we don’t know yet whether they will all be on the roster come final cuts.

Last year, the Dolphins had one of their best kicking performances in a while from veteran K Cody Parkey.  The Dolphins chose not to allocate money towards a K and let Parker walk, so we all have to hope that move doesn’t come back to bite us in the ass.  Young Jason Sanders has a tough act to follow after the excellence of Parkey.  Last year, P Matt Haack had an OK year, he wasn’t great, he wasn’t poor either.  Haack averaged 44.5 yards per punt, with a 40.7 net average

The big questions on special teams are as follows.  Is Jakeem Grant ready for prime time, without Jarvis Landry to lean on in big spots?  Is Jason Sanders going to get the job done well enough to keep his job through the preseason?  Will Jason Sanders adequately replace the excellence of Cody Parkey?  Will the new kickoff rules help us or hurt us? Stay tuned Dolphins fans, OTA’s are going on as you read this, so keep your eyes on the reports to see what’s happening.

It’s not junk, Piggy. I’m tired of being lumped in with white people like we all think the same because of the shade of our skin. It’s bullshit! When that shit stops I’ll shut up. I’m tired of it. The mainstream media is so bias with this issue that I want to scream. But I don’t because I respect my neighbors. 🙂

It has been my experience that people who treat themselves and others with respect, publicly adhere to social norms, obey the law, and are generally nice people get accepted regardless of the color of their skin. On the other hand, those who use the color of their skin as an excuse for poor decisions, criminal activity, or generally uncivil behavior and call racism when they suffer the consequences of their actions are not accepted.

PHELON: Unfortunately, what you just said absolutely was NOT TRUE in south Florida during the late 50’s. Black people were still being beat-up, and occasionally murdered, just because they were black. I was once invited to a gathering of so-called “good Christian boys” who intended to go out on Saturday night to attack “blacks, queers, and other people who don’t belong here.” I politely declined. I had NEVER encountered such a thing during my early years living in Canada. And I was stunned that such thinking still existed. When I later found out that a local preacher was the leader of a local KKK chapter, I decided that certain religions in my part of Florida were fronts for racist behavior that I could not tolerate. My suspicions of organized religion have never gone away.

      • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

But, that said, I do financially support a small local church that my wife attends. THIS CHURCH accepts people of all colors and backgrounds. And it helps to feed the homeless, including those who are veterans.

WELL hats off to Washington fans. Their team beat the Lightning fair and square. Tampa Bay was only shut out ONCE during the regular season. But the Caps shut them out both in game 6 and game 7. They certainly deserved to win the series.

I’ll be rooting for Steve’s Golden Knights in the Finals!

OD – The 50’s were the cradle of the civil rights movement. And while there is still ignorance in the country, it has changed and continues to change. I grew up in central Florida, so you don’t need to tell me about the culture there. What I’m talking about is rioting over criminals being killed while resisting arrest and protesting the “social injustice” of paying the consequences of bad behavior. Not everything is racism. Being uncivilized and disrespectful have nothing to do with race.

  26. D's avatar D says:

Damn the Bills are down another WR. Zay Jones just had knee surgery.

  27. D's avatar D says:

The Bill WR corps right now is pretty much Kelvin Benjamin, though id give some credit to Robert Foster (one of their draft picks), for having potential to start and threaten our secondary. Benjamin is also coming off an injury himself so more and more it looks like if we can just figure out how to stop McCoy we will be in good shape against them. I think McCoy is also a lot easier to manage when you also arent having to watch for Taylor. McCarron, Allen, nor Peterman are scary to defenses to break off a run.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Isn’t Allen pretty good at moving around and running?

      • D's avatar D says:

He’s mobile, like Tanny, but i dont think he is anywhere near the running threat Taylor is.

      • D's avatar D says:

There was a chunk of their game plan they had last year that focused on Taylors ability to run and how that would set up McCoy, i dont think you will see much of that with any of those other QB’s.

  28. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Are there OTAs today?

    • D's avatar D says:

I think so i think it was 3 days of OTA’s then a break then three more in about a week. It might not be open to the media though. I think yesterday was the only session this week open to the media.

  29. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tyrod Taylor seemed to save his best for the Dolphins. He always played well against us.

  30. D's avatar D says:

I feel pretty good with our chances against the Bills this year, especially if we have a healthy McMillan and Baker comes along well. A LB group with Baker, McMillan and Alonzo will be able to keep McCoy from getting outside much and i think the DT’s we have will do a good job of congesting the middle to prevent cutbacks and inside runs. We dont have a DT that’s going to penetrate like Suh did but i think they will do their job and keep those lanes contained.

    • D's avatar D says:

Because thats the emotional pivot argument. Id say the most heated and emotional arguments you will find at the core are about something completely different and they are attaching themselves to other subjects that carry and even stronger emotional force behind them. Its a tactice when you want to be mad about someone doing one thing but you dont think people will side with you without it also being about

It’s nauseating. The fact that many people don’t understand it’s a workplace rule and not about free speech drives me insane.

I worked for a company that on every Monday morning we stood around the conference room and each person discussed something positive both business and personal. It wasn’t an option to attend, it was required to be part of the team.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

That’s the equivalent of a team meeting Tim
        Not standing for the anthem
And we know players get in trouble for missing meetings

I don’t know many employers who play the anthem before work and make everyone partipate

I think that would be frowned up
It sounds like something the Cold War Soviet Union would do

  38. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

D – There are no protests during the anthem in any of the other major sports, although I suppose I could leave the NHL out because there are so few black players. The NBA on the other hand, which has more black players than the NFL does has no such issue. I have no problem with their viewpoint at all, and I truly think something needs to change, but there are other platforms to make this happen other than kneeling or standing in the locker room at a football game while the national Anthem is playing

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

What’s also making it worse is no solidarity on the rule. Some owners like the Jests owner is saying the team will pay for any fines incurred, which further exacerbates the issue. Everyone needs to be and stay on the same page and adhere to the rules.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think many players do it just to be defiant and they have no passion about the issue and do nothing after they kneel. Kenny Stills and other NFL players off the field started to get the community together to discuss this issue including police. That’s how you do it. Kneeling will not solve a damn thing. It’s a faux proposition.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It’s weird that it was a unanimous vote but teams like the 49ers and jests have said some things that undermine their support publicly

It’s prett solid evidence that it’s just PR and the nfl owners want to save face and say “we tried”

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Pig, yeah, I’ve been trying to figure that out too. I heard this morning that York (Niners owner) abstained form the vote, so I’m betting the Jest owner did too. It’s probably unanimous from owners that voted.

This whole measure is a giant mistake that will continue to keep this issue front and center and talked about.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Well abstaining from the vote is bullshit unless you don’t care about the result

The 49ers are not allowing concession purchases during the anthem from what I’ve heard. Basically they are saying you can’t do anything during the anthem

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Agreed. What is the point of abstaining in this matter? What are you saying exactly? an what are you telling your base? It’s a cop out.

    • D's avatar D says:

Im on the side of believing they should stand, because that’s my code of ethics and that’s how i believe the anthem should be treated. I believe that arguments of social injustice are best protested where the injustice happens, so to me protesting in the form of town hall discussion directly with the police and or protesting at the state or local government buildings makes more sens to me to affect a chance in your area with the police and their rules of engagement.

It did stir the pot though so was it effective, yes i believe it was, but i also think it came with a lot of negative push back that lessened the effectiveness of the protest. There is always give and take in these situations, whats enough to get the necessary attention but not too much to turn people off the cause, and i think the way this was done, and certainly the way it was started did not have the right balance of that.

Does anyone think kneeling for the anthem is what will change police brutality which is what the issue is about?

    ****
    Tim – it’s a new rule
And the power of the league to make that rule would come under the CBA

They actually don’t have free reign to just make up rules
Either does your employer or my employer (immmynown employer but
    You get the point)

I’m guessing there is a catch all in the CBA that allows some control over player conduct

But bc the cba was negotiated before this controversy there is no way it addressed this issue and so the catch all is broad and vague

And if it’s broad then that means it can be challenged in court effectively (kind of liken Brady)

It’s true that it’s not a 1st amendment issue bc it doesn’t invoke the government (albeit the source of the pressure is clearly from the highest member of the govt)

    But in the private sector
When there is a contract in place that governs
That contract’s language is the issue

It’s very possible the nfl overstepped their rights under the cba – they’ve screwed that up before and we know it’s been the topic of litigation

And let’s not be naive about it. The nfl player relationship and options is much different than the average employee.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      And yes

      To answer your question
I think creating a controversy or even a silent protest without controversy (which is what it should have been) will bring attention to another controversy

And awareness is the first part in addressing any issue

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

This is what should be discussed. Does the league have the power to implement this rule in this manner. I believe the reason they made the decision to fine the team, and then leave it to the team to fine the player is specifically to get around the CBA issues. We’ll see how it plays out.

What we can be sure of, is this isn’t going away, and IMO the league poured fire on the issue instead of water.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

They probably have some powers in the cba

But catch all stuff is always subject to challenges

The NFPLA will challenge the rule. That’s almost a guaranty. I’m sure the owners are prepared for that. I actually think the owners may not even want to win that battle – just show the public they tried

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

And throw in the fact two owners have already said they won’t implement it, or will pay the fines and not pass it on, and it starts to add up.

What you are saying makes a lot of sense that this is just so the owners can tell their “they should stand” customers that they tried to do what they could.

If an employee goes to work every morning and starts ranting about how the company and everyone a part of it sucks, do they really think they can’t be fired because of their first amendment rights? When did people forget there are rules in our society in many different forms? Some are just basic civil behavior and respect. There are consequences for being a douche. It’s called burning bridges.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Most employees in American are employees at will

So employers get free reign to fire them (provided they aren’t violating the law, discrimination laws and that sort of thing)

But the nfl players all belong to a union
And that union is a party to the cba

And the nfl has guidelines they must adhere to pursuant to the contract they signed

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      I know
      And I agree

But that means it was never specifically stated in the cba

And vagueness in a contract is usually the source of ugly litigation

The reason there was vagueness is irrelevant to the fact that you can expect a fight about whether it’s permitted or not under the cba

  47. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – I think we should call it the “Douche Rule” and there should be a DEA, Douche Enforcement Agency. lol

  48. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Piggy, for the record I think how the NFL went about this in recent days was stupid. To me much like states rights it should come from the owner of each team on what the conduct under our brand is. Then let the market speak on that decision. The Yankees for years not sure if it’s still intact, had a “clean shaven” rule. Not everything in life is laissez-faire.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I would have preferred it be more subject to free market idea too rather than a collective agreement between owners

But once the president said his .02 on the topic I think the nfl have to do it as a unit to avoid long term harm to the league

They also would have been better served squashing this a long time ago if they were going to make aninofmr rule like this – now it’s a mess

I guess at the end of the day, the nfl, fresh off the heals of a few controversies of what they can do in punishing players, know the risks they take

    Mike,
Lest say you worked for a business that had 0 rules about people named Mike working for them, and then one day, they just go, fuck it, no more Mikes and you lose your job, or they decide to fine you every day you keep the name Mike. Them creating a new rule without grandfathering you in or at least some sort of upfront notice of the rule change, nor input from you as to the fairness of this new rule, etc would be wrong wouldnt it? Also lets say your company is unionized and this new rule comes in affecting you an the other Mike’s that work there without some sort of mediation between the two groups to approve the new rule or find a compramise?

Thats kind of what Piggy is saying about they cant really do that. I see ways they can sneak around it, like they could just have the teams put it in their handbook which is a set of rules that can and does change yearly. There would be no leg to stand on there, as long as the team was hading out the fines. The NFL handing out the fines to a player is also a little outside what they should be able to do in this situation, as there was no NFLPA involvement in the decision and thats usually part of what is agrred upon in the CBA sessions. So i pretty much agree that from a legal standpoint, this really doesnt seem legit, at least not done the way it was rumored to be getting done.

  51. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

D – C’mon man, you’re a smart guy, but that’s an awful analogy. There can’t be rules for everything, until something gets out of hand, and causes new rules to be enforced. That’s what happened here. The rule itself isn’t really ridiculous that there should be no protests during the national anthem, it’s the NEED for the rule that’s ridiculous. It’s like I bet there’s no specific rule in the DMV regarding people lighting off farts in their cars, but if people’s cars starting exploding all over the place, there would be a rule to prevent it.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Never mind, I caught your union post. There have to be mitigating circumstances when a rule needs to be put into effect, and I think the protests were an excellent reason for a new rule.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Well it depends what the contract says

I mean that’s the point of a contract. Parties are free to negotiate their rights.

This is actually a unique situation. Owners and Players both have a lot of $. In terms of means to negotiate a fair deal – they both have every ability to explicitly state what they want ina contract, particularly things that might come up

Now it would have been impossible to say “kneeling” then or anything about that anthem. But I’m sure there is general stuff about the powers to make rules concerning conduct

My point is – if we were talking about kneeling or bobbing for apples or whatever, the fact that it’s not explicitly discussed in the cba, opens the door for a challenge by the nfpla

And the nfl and nfpla hate each other lately
They have a really bad relationship

So I expect this to be an issue that isn’t finished today or anytime soon

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      No they aren’t

Employment at will is a general term that represents the vast majority in America

Basically there is no contract or employment agreement
And no restrictions on hiring or firing

Nfl players are in a union
And they have a contract as well
      Which is a weird combo

      They aren’t employment at will

      https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/At-will_employment

Wiki says it’s a contractual relationship
But it’s not really I just think they were trying to explain it as being a substitute for a contract

If there is a collective bargaining agreement, you are not employment at will

It makes more sense if you are talking about a union laborer who has to be fired “for cause” bc we all know an nfl plyer can be waived

But the reason I mention the term is bc – it’s not a free for all with employees under a CBA and that doesn’t end with hiring/firing, thatbinckudes the rules that govern their behavior

  57. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Let’s see what did I miss since noon…anthem, anthem, I see nothing.

Howard also realized he can’t just go play and be athletic at this level. He said he has to watch film and work on the finer points of his game. He admits struggling at times his first few years.

He looks the part. It’s up to him how high he takes it. My favorite thing about him is he does not shy away from contact and tackling. Hits like a safety. Hone those coverage skills and you have a complete top corner.

  66. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Anybody else catch the Xavien Howard interview today? Listen to it or read the transcript. He specifically stated that he started to BALL down the stretch last year, once he (and the team as a whole) was permitted to play man-to-man instead this soft-zone BS we’ve seen over the last several years.

And I can STILL remember Omar stating last year that there was NOTHING to playing zone vs man, AFTER Xavien’s breakout late last year… SMMFH. You DON’T draft ‘jammers’, only to play them in zone coverage. Anybody remember me saying this for the 10000th time then, and again now? YES… Xavien agrees. Play to your strengths and what one was drafted to be… I’m growing TIRED of the dysfunction in our FO to the coaching staff.

Matt Burke had BETTER have figured this matter out by now, or it’s going to be another LONG season on the Defensive side of the ball.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Didn’t this show that Matt Burke figured it out? It wouldn’t have happened if he didn’t.

You have to remember, we don’t see how young players react to situations and how much they have taken in. What you see being played is not always the preference to what the coaches really want to do. Sometimes it’s how best they think we can win the game. Maybe Howard wasn’t ready from day one. That’s not surprising.

We have a lot of rook to 4th year players who need to change the talent level of this team. That’s what I’m excited about. We know what the vets are, it’s these guys who will change the dynamic of this team.

    • D's avatar D says:

You can play press and then fall back to zone coverage, thats the way Seattle did it most of the time. To your point though, a man Cb and a zone CB are extremely different, and need different high level attributes to make them great.

Zone CB need to be really football smart and need really good burst speed so they can settle into their zone, read the QB and jump the route.

A man CB needs to be practically a receiver, similar ability to accelerate while making breaks, decent burst speed but really good straight line speed and be able to run ever route tree a WR can since they have to mirror their cuts and speed and stay glued to them.

Press really isnt a coverage its an attribute of the other two coverage types, and it includes a physicality and basic difference in how they line u, ie directly across the line from the receiver instead of 5 steps back, etc. They generally need to be bigger with good closing speed because they are going to jam the, usually smaller receiver and then likely have to play a little catch up if they are in press-man.In press-zone they have to be able to bump the receiver and get back to their zone before a receiver does, so in both speed is a good attribute to have but not quite as important as true man coverage.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Good stuff, D. This was touched on by that show Sam Madison does while driving around with a player. I saw one with Howard and they discussed both being 4.5 corners – how do you cover those 4.3 guys? Knock them off their route and be physical with them. It is more mentality than a coverage. It’s trench warfare then a sprint to a spot.

Sam Madison has really good insight into how secondaries work. He was a really instinctive and smart player. Was never the same after hurting his shoulder making a tackle. He played softer.

    ————-
Excellent point. I DO think he’s figured it out, or at least I hope!

I will never understand why we played our JAM CBs so far off the ball. I mean, why even draft JAM CBs, then… it never made sense!

And if we’re going to be aggressive with our DF7, that dictates that the QB needs to get rid of the ball very quickly… so why give ANY receiver a cushion? Do ya know what I’m sayin’?!! 🙂

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I hear ya and that makes sense. Of course you mix it up sometimes, but I think this is how the team wants to play and it hasn’t really gotten there on both sides of the ball. Gase knew it and changed a lot of coaches and players. It’s on him.

Enter the Swiss Army Knife selected at #11. I see us playing more dime this year because of our secondary personnel. Maybe some 3-2-6 versions as opposed to all 4-1-6. When most teams play with 3 WR, a pass catching TE and the same at RB, you need to be in coverage. Back in the day it used to be play the run and react to the pass. It’s reversed now a lot of the time.

Obviously if a team is a physical more standard type offense you might be in base and nickel most of the time. But it’s good to have personnel to play all styles. On paper things look good, just not much tape with this team.

    16th on the 2nd event

On the 3rd event, a machine one team was using broke. So we beat them on that event.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We used a mixture of both a lot. One perimeter corner in press, the other side off man. But that’s not alway zone. Sometimes off man is still that’s your man and follow him. Zone is let the routes come to your zone. We didn’t do that as much as perceived.

Our problem was lots of newbees both FA vets and young guys with no chemistry. That has to get cleaned up and I think it will this year. The talent is there. I really feel Fitzpatrick is going to change the dynamic of our defense.

Suh was very good at penetrating the backfield. he just didn’t do much once he got through. Not enough impactful things anyway. he was tied for 62 in the league for tackles for a loss last season. he was eighth in eligible DT’s.

If I was Burke, my base formation would be the hybrid nickel. I would start TJ, Jones and Minkah all at the same time. TJ and Jones are valuable players that could become elite players, with the right formation. Allowing them to play close to the line of scrimmage will allow them to play a shorter amount of time. A wise man once said, “The best secondary, is the one that plays the shortest amount of time.” (Bill Parcells) Jones and TJ shouldn’t be running north and south on the field – they are best suited for sideline to sideline.

Minkah will allow those two players to do that, by playing the money position (termed by Saban) or the Robber (termed by Nolan), the Dolphins, in my eyes, will look to employ a two-drop safety net with a Robber in the middle of the field. Which will then allow all players to play at their best position and make a difference on the field. We will see TJ and Jones still running with Running Back and Tight Ends, but the Robber will provide over the top help.

I doubt that Burke will actually be that bold and start all three players and become the first DC implement a hybrid outside the base 3-4 or 4-3 sets. It’s a bold move, one where you are starting your best athletes regardless of position, that would make all other teams curious, right? Isn’t that what a first-round pick should bring to a team – A sense of curiosity?

Tim – I think we should call it the “Douche Rule”

mikee, they already had the “douche rule” I believe the rule read “If a quarterback loses possession of a ball while bringing it forward in a passing motion, it is considered an incomplete pass.” It was amended by The Tuck Rule which extended that to circumstances wherein “the player loses possession of the ball as he is attempting to tuck it back toward his body.”

Obama voted present 3% in the Illinois Senate. This was a “usual” amount for the minority or “less than average” number within his caucus. He voted on 97% of the bills.

He never voted present as a US Senator.

Sarah Palin quit as governor when things got tough.

THAT STORM BREWING in the Gulf of Mexico is playing havoc with the Conference USA baseball tournament (in Biloxi). The forecast for this weekend is horrid, and the tournament is already a full day behind schedule. Most experts see Southern Miss, FAU and Louisiana Tech advancing onto the NCAA tournament. However, it looks like the C-USA tourney may not be finished by the time the top teams have to go to the NCAA’s. I’ve never heard of a conference tournament getting cancelled, but it could happen this time.

Ah, mother nature! Maybe some day most of the NCAA baseball playoffs will be played at indoor stadiums since June, traditionally, is one of the wettest months of the year in the southern states.

THE WEATHER CHANELL is predicting either a 90% or a 100% chance of rain here in the northern suburbs of Tampa for the next FIVE DAYS. Oh, well, guess I’ll just have to spend more time indoors Mrs. OD over the Memorial Day weekend. Let me take this opportunity to wish everyone, especially my fellow veterans, a thoughtful weekend of remembrance in honor of those who gave everything for their country.

watching NFL network this morning and the guys on set keep saying “he was dropping dimes” blah blah blah “yeah, he is out their dropping dimes”

When did this become a saying? when I was coming up to drop a dime on someone was a bad thing. It was “ratting them out” if you dropped a dime on someone you got an ass beating or worse. when did it become a good thing in foot ball?
