Miami Dolphins Special Teams 2018

Defense?  Check!  Offense?  Check!  Now it’s time to take a look at our special teams unit.  Returning for his 15th NFL season is long snapper John Denney.  As any good Dolphins fan knows, this guy isn’t just hiking the ball, this guy hustles downfield on every punt and makes his shares of tackles too.  The Dolphins as per usghe brought in “competition” for Denney, or more like insurance in the form of one LS Lucas Gravelle out of TCU.  Gravelle was a 2018 UDFA.

Matt Haack will return as the punter, and just so Stanger knows, Haack will be wearing #2 this season, showing no respect to future ring of honor punter Brandon Fields.  Or maybe he wears it out of respect and love for Fields, not sure.  In the 7th RD, Miami most likely landed their starting place kicker in Jason Sanders out of New Mexico.  Sanders has a very strong leg, and his kickoffs are always deep.  His longest college FG was a 53 yarder, but in practice, he’s hit FG’s beyond 60 and close to 70.  The Dolphins also brought in UDFA K Greg Joseph from FAU to provide some competition for Sanders.  There are however also always a few veteran kickers waiting for a team to lose a K to injury, or just an outright cut due to poor performance.  Matt Haack will continue to be the holder on FG’s.

With Jarvis Landry out of the picture, Jakeem Grant will take over the primary return duties on both punts and kickoffs.  With all the changes, it’s hard to know whether the new return rules will be advantageous or not for the ultra fast Grant, but it seems to indicate that it might.   With the kickoff team unable to get a running start, that should give the receiving team just a little more time to get up some speed after the catch.  On the other hand, the new rule is that if the ball touches the end zone on a kickoff it will be ruled as a touchback, so if the ball bounces past the goal line on a kickoff, it is dead, and declared a touchback.  Kenyan Drake will join Grant as the other returner on kickoffs, and at least at the moment, Senorise Perry is behind the aforementioned 2 on the return depth chart.

As far as players who will be counted on to be special teams aces is returning veteran CB/S Walt Aikens, LB Chase Allen, LB Mike Hull,  veteran LB Terence Garvin who came over from Seattle, rookie LB Quentin Poling, CB Torry McTyer and possibly rookie CB’s Cornell Armstrong and Jalen Davis.  I say possible, because we don’t know yet whether they will all be on the roster come final cuts.

Last year, the Dolphins had one of their best kicking performances in a while from veteran K Cody Parkey.  The Dolphins chose not to allocate money towards a K and let Parker walk, so we all have to hope that move doesn’t come back to bite us in the ass.  Young Jason Sanders has a tough act to follow after the excellence of Parkey.  Last year, P Matt Haack had an OK year, he wasn’t great, he wasn’t poor either.  Haack averaged 44.5 yards per punt, with a 40.7 net average

The big questions on special teams are as follows.  Is Jakeem Grant ready for prime time, without Jarvis Landry to lean on in big spots?  Is Jason Sanders going to get the job done well enough to keep his job through the preseason?  Will Jason Sanders adequately replace the excellence of Cody Parkey?  Will the new kickoff rules help us or hurt us? Stay tuned Dolphins fans, OTA’s are going on as you read this, so keep your eyes on the reports to see what’s happening.

He needs to be able to process within 2.5 seconds, and get the ball out, if he can do that everything else will fall into place nicely.

I criticized him a lot early on this
But in 2016 he was really good at this
      I think it was corrected
I thought he looked like a franchise an in 16 before he was injured and correcting this is one of the reasons why

THIS MORNING’S TAMPA BAY TIMES has a story about the sad Baker-Acting of former Buffalo & Miami O-Lineman Richie Incognito. He was seen tossing huge weights around and acting in a very belligerent and dangerous manner in Boca Raton, not far from FAU, in a work-out place.
He exhibited many of the classic symptoms of CTE, according to the story. NO DOUBT Jerry Jones believes this is a lie. He still clings to his flat earth point of view that there is no relationship between playing football and CTE. Oddly enough, Jones, himself, is said to display some of those symptoms!! He DID play college football at Arkansas, as many of you may know, with Jimmy Johnson. CTE, not the protests of the national anthem, is the NFL’s biggest black eye. And it won’t go away by just saying it doesn’t exist or that football is not a factor.

May Richie Incognito get the help he so obviously needs!

the story behind my “get the fuck up” is; for years I had season tickets (7 years straight before I moved to Rockledge in 2005-6 season) and I sat in front of this group that bought tickets IN MY section after me and that would complain when I would stand up and make noise when out defense was on the field. “Being the 12th man” then one game the wife who would always just complain “under her breath”( but loud enough to be heard in a stadium full of 60K screaming fans) tapped me on the back with her cup and told me to sit down……It only took the once.

Oh yeah I don’t care what anyone thinks. The team has to go out and prove it. I’m not sure what we are as a team yet either because there is so much new. But there is talent on this team to be good.

  24. D's avatar D says:

I thought i loved the Dylan Thomas poem “Do not go gentle into that goodnight.” about as much as humanly possible and then i heard a few readings of it and man some people can really bring even more emotion to that, and they can pull out different emotions anywhere from angst and rebellion to desperation, to solemn denial. Thats easily my favorite poem, i cant think of any other that hits me as hard as that one, especially recently for me its been running around in my head a lot.

  25. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Mike E & Rock — have nothing but respect for Andy Cohen. One of the best Dolphin writers ever. Still trust the articles that come out in his name though.

      • D's avatar D says:

Piggy i think Tim is basically saying the politicians are doing this for show and not really making attempts to fix anything. You are right as well, its an emotional topic and emotion drives change, but only if they aren’t just using it for political gain. I promise you with the fact they have no real plan in place, bringing those kids up there to do that is just for show, those children cannot help make legislation they can only help mold it. I too see this as a ruse, as no one has come to any sort of solution, the two sides havent worked things out enough with one another to be in a place that that arent just throwing these kids into the middle of a stalemate.

  34. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

D, here’s a perfect example. As if these students have the answers. It’s all emotionally based, not based on facts.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      Of course it’s emotionally based
      It’s an emotional topic

So is every major legislation in America

I don’t get this argument at all
Don’t smear an argument bc somenone cares about something
Nothing ever gets done if no ones cares

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You think students have the answers? Not from what I have heard. They spew the same leftist nonsense as the people bringing them in as interns. This is like the news asking people on the street what they think about a situation that leaves you saying WTF did they just say?

What about the “gun violence” that goes on everyday in cities all across this country that nobody wants to talk about because most the them are lead by leftist Democrats who have no idea how to clean it up. It’s so much deeper than gun laws and the NRA but let’s keep saying the same thing over and over that won’t correct the problem.

I can’t wait to hear the results of their prevention ideas, I’m sure it will be enlightening.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        Tim that’s bogus
How can you say in a prior post no wonder we don’t get anything done and then saying something this antagonistic

Those things are in direct conflict with one another
Don’t belittle an argument as emotional and then say “no wonder we don’t get things done”. Come on really! You are adding to things not being done

Those kids have lived through shooter drills their whole lives. They have perspective our generation will never have. Don’t be dismissive because they are young .

People talk about gun violence in The city ad nasueum. I’m not sure what you are listening too where it’s not discussed and it’s certianly no reason to dismiss another argument to address mass shootings in public places. If you feel you have solution for inner city gun violence – go for it. Those are apples to oranges. Personally I feel more threatened by a maniac with an arsenal going into a bank, restaurant or public place I’m at that criminal violence in the inner city, but if you think that’s a legitimate problem and not just a ca red herring, don’t let anything stop you from addressing it. That post you posted isn’t preventing you from making an argument about the importance of stopping gun violence in the inner city.

I don’t teally care if people have different points of view or different solutions or different priorities – but I hate this kind of argument to undermine some one points of view.

You can’t be serious about 15, 16, 17, and 18 year olds having true understanding of how the world works. There’s a REASON why these school shootings are so emotional and national tragedies… they are mere KIDS!!!

They are not being voted into office
The threshold to express yourself, even too politicians who make law isn’t high

They are being invited to speak and have as might right as any citizen
The first amendment doesn’t have a age limit
      There’s a reason for that
      Every point of view matters

Donald trump invited some of the victims too
So let’s not have a double standard about it just bc you don’t like the substance of their opinion

Who here was upset when trump asked those victims to come to the whitehouse?

      🦗🦗🦗🦗🦗

Let’s face it. Objecting to them speaking about their experience isn’t a question of their age, it’s a thinly veiled attempt to attack the substance of their argument – personally I don’t buy that one bit

    Are you going to?…
    ————–
What’s their POV… being shot at? MANY already know their POV, especially vets. I know their POV: I’ve been shot at. These mere children don’t OWN being shot at. nor their circumstances.

I’m just sayin’… a lot of the so-called ‘old farts’ know a LOT about this matter and how to combat it. It begins with prevention, followed by security.

These children are being coached-up to say, “BAN GUNS!!!!”. That’s NOT a solution… PERIOD. You know it, I know it, America knows it, and any country that has banned guns knows it. The violence will continue, so long as these video games, music, Hollywood movies, and TV programs actively PROMOTE violence.

The problem with kids today is most obviously stemming from the media, with everything our children are subjected to.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      They aren’t coached up
If you have to argue that everything is a product of some nefarious manipulation it reflects lack of substance of a counterargument

At the end of the day it doesn’t matter what’s driving some one anyway
It matters whether they are right
      And whether they are persuasive
If you spend so much time smearing people there it’s no argument at all

I also don’t know that banning guns is not a solution
      And frankly no one does
It’s just not my solution. I actually did not think any of those kids have said that either which brings me full circle to my point

  42. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I think everyone knows where I stand on gun control. In regards to the Parkland kids being invited to intern, it’s just a publicity stunt. Not like they are inviting all of them, just those who support their aim. Not all the kids, not even a majority, are yelling for gun control. The republicans could invite the the kids supporting the 2 nd amendment to do the same.

The issue isn’t guns. It’s the hive mind that society, thru the media and entertainment, has come rated that leads children to think that violence is the answer to every slight and perceived injustice. That notoriety is the cure. We don’t teach our kids to deal with life.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

      come rated = created. SMH

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’ll get into this more later, but the entertainment industry and Hollywood couldn’t be more hypocritical and yes partially responsible for these shootings because they glorify “gun violence” constantly! They even make killing people funny. I’ve been saying that for years and now they’re finally getting caught for sexual harassment and just wait until the pedophilia accusations come out in droves.

Piggy, my interpretation of what Tim is saying is the politicians are doing this for show and not really making attempts to fix anything. You are right as well, its an emotional topic and emotion drives change, but only if the politicians arent borrowing those emotions for political gain.

I promise you with the fact they have no real plan in place, bringing those kids up there to do that it is just for show. Those children cannot help make legislation and mediate bi-partisanship. I too see this as a ruse, as no one has come to any sort of solution, the two sides haven’t worked things out enough with one another to be in a place that that aren’t just throwing these kids into the middle of a stalemate.

I personally think bringing them there at the appropriate time would be very beneficial, if the politicians were closer to a compromise then these kids help seal the deal, they bring a real would perspective to the finalizing of the compromise but it has to be after the sides are stopping their agenda game of right to bear arms vs gun control. When they put that aside and start talking how to we protect the children from lunatics/emotionally disturbed classmates then they galvanize the changes with their emotional appeal. Right now, to me it looks like they are being used.

    ——————————————–
I dont think they are being coached up per say but i do think they are being manipulated into having a different argument than is their intent. I think they are right in their intent, i think they are right with their message (the original one not the manipulated one), and i do hope they persuade people to put more attention to school funding for the purpose of enhanced security that will prevent more school shooting, but if it devolves to more debate about gun control, they have lost, and it seems very much like that’s what the politicians are bring them there to debate. If the politicians were backed off that bullshit, then we debate the real issue, and there in lies my skepticism and thats why i think the timing of this does not bode well for the cause at all.

    ******

I’m a little less concerned about arguing the merits of gun laws at the moment than why we shouldn’t be smearing the parkland kids or being condescending to their point of view

But I will go with you on this one

You might be right about he psychology of children today
And even if you are wrong about the generalization (and it is a generalization) the idea certianly applies to the crazy shooters that we’ve seen

But none of that really helps us remove the weapons from their hands or remove the immediate threat to all of us

I don’t really think a analysis of the psychology of the people who are doing the shootings is going to give us immediate relief that we need
Long term it might work or it might not

But short term, the threat is around all of us and it’s not going away even if we can pinpoint the motivation. So I think just thinknot makes a lot more sense to take the weapons out of dangerous hands rather than to change dangerous minds

    Or just do both

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I doubt making guns illegal will provide immediate relief either.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Agreed, because they can always find guns. The problem is mental health, and many cases caused by bullying.

The first case of action, should be to put a stop to bullying. One thing that might help is increasing the punishment. Schools should start having mandatory bullying classes, like we have sexual harassment classes.

Something like 2nd offense, which is clearly stated in the class what constitutes bullying, gets you time in juvi or some type of in school punishment.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It depends what you mean by that
But I think you make a good point

I do think some fairly simple legislation concerning guns can have a big impact immediately

People sometimes forget that there has been federal legislation banning assault rifles (from 1994 – 2004) and it didn’t take anyone’s guns away

It also was relatively ineffective being that it was riddled with loopholes – but I would say that’s better than nothing

One thing to take away from it
There were studies to show that there were actually less assault rifles available on the streets or black market during the legislation which I think undermines the argument that if you ban guns, only criminals have guns

But to understand why, rather than looking at the legislation, you can look at economics

There was a jump of sales when it passed
        Far more than manufacturers expected
So the supply was unable to match demand
And that lead to less guns being passed down to the streets
People cling to the guns they had already in fear that they couldnt replace it

The gun mfg eventually produced more and the numbers eventually leveled off

But I think it’s interesting to look at how economics effected the availability of guns

I do think gun legislation works and can be effective
I just think it has to be narrowly tailored and very specific
And you got to get the gun lobby on board to participate in the legislation
And frankly – I don’t think that’s the mindset of the nra
I think they are balls out against anything remotely affecting gun sales

I don’t think people who value guns ownership are hurting reasonable legislation
But I do think the nra is killing it

People I know and respect including law enforcement and military including our own Phish, have laid out the stats. But they are ignored for political purposes.

What is the profile of these shooters and why are the red flags ignored when warning signs were out there?

    Solutions:
    1. Increased security at schools and be prepared to pay more taxes because children’s lives matter.

    2. Increased gun/weapon training and psychological testing before being allowed to purchase a gun/weapon – at the customer’s cost. Just like obtaining any license.

    3. Guns are not going to be banned, but you 2nd amendment gun peeps need to budge a little.

One of the biggest issues I saw was right after the Texas shooting – people were claiming AR-15 again when that was not involved in this shooting. It was a shotgun, handgun and potential explosives. Why is the truth so difficult, why make stuff up? That’s agenda driven BS!

He carefully sucks the guts from around the muscle then passes it to the last guy who scrapes the muscle off the bottom shell and puts it in a bowl of ice water. Only takes us about an hour to clean 10 gallons (in the shell). We have another 5 gallon bucket with an old potato sack and pour all the scallop guts in it and put ice on it. Have lunch, pack beer in the coolers and head out fishing for the afternoon. We put the scallop guts over the side for chum and it really brings the fish in. Come back clean fish, shower, drink and play cornhole while we hoot (we don’t take our wives) at all the other boats (bikini’s) coming in the channel.

If you cue the video to 13:18, she begins talking about how it went down with the Dolphins (HER take, of course). Interesting nuggets in this interview that I don’t believe have been covered before. If want to see what a b!tch she is, watch the full interview. If not, just go to 13:18.

      ————-
WHEN ANY OTHER TEAM runs the table with a 38 year old backup QB
starting 11 games, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!!!!!!
      ————
UNTIL THEN, the 1972 Dolphins ARE the GREATEST TEAM OF ALL TIME!!!

70’s Steelers should be extremely thankful for the
WFL of one year existence that destroyed Miami’s opportunities at potentially 3, 4, 5, 6 Dolphins SB’s !!!

Loved what you said Old dolphin!!!

        GOFINS!!!

BE SURE to pay special attention to the second Jets-Dolphins game of 1972, played in November in the Historic Orange Bowl. With Miami trailing 17-14 in the 3rd quarter, Earl Morrell took off and scored on a 31 yard touchdown jaunt, the longest running TD for the Fins, up to that point in the season! THAT GAME, in my humble opinion, was the greatest game of the ’72 regular season. It STILL gives me goose bumps every time I think about it!! It was at THAT POINT that I really believed a PERFECT SEASON WAS WITHIN MIAMI’S REACH!!

Woww Manny Fernandez actually intercepts the QB to RB hand-off, (NOT a Lateral), a HANDOFF, what a play!!!

      • 13kvFINS's avatar 13kvFINS says:

Beat the RB to the spot, burst through the landfill speed And runs between QB & RB to take hands-off in full stride, CRAZZYYY!!!

There is no climate change. There is, but there isn’t. 😉
    ————
I hear ya, Bro. Climate change is cyclical, not man-made… though, we had better be good tenants of our only home… Mother Earth. THAT’S REAL

I have a good friend who has been a true environmentalist since I’ve known him, he’s a few years younger, he’s my friend’s younger brother but we became friends as well. I’ve mentioned these two guys before, their parents came here from Castro’s Cuba in the 60’s.

My friend Carlos was one of the first people I remember making recycling a priority when he was a teenager. He is involved in climate change chapters out west in California not for far left political reasons, but for reality reasons. He is like you and I on this issue, whatever it is that causes drastic climate change, be open to the data and adapt to it. The truth.

I think we can all agree that humans pollute the shit out of this planet. I’m sick of it!

  89. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Friendly reminder… it used to be 136 degrees Fahrenheit on AVERAGE in the Cretaceous age. REAL science will remind us of as much. Our orbit around the galactic center (the middle of the Milky Way) is in constant change. And one day, once again, we’re going to be in peril of astronomical bombardment.

We see our own Moon’s pocked surface. We see Mars’ pocked surface. We’ve seen in our lifetimes comets and asteroids impact the likes of Jupiter (the GREATEST defender of ours in our solar system!). We see our own Earth’s pocked surface, from the Chicxulub crater, to Meteor crater, to recently discovered deep-ocean craters.

We’re about to enter a new age… or shall I say, REVISITING an old age. How very arrogant of humans to think that we control the climate. And on top of that, we experience ‘Ice Ages’ every 10,000 years or so. And with ensuing melts (BEFORE man invented “man-made climate change”), we get the Grand Canyon.

Plate tectonics and volcanism have both destroyed and created land… NOT man. And man had no say in either the creation or division of Pangea. And when sulfur and ash gets ejected into the air via HUGE eruptions, man didn’t wave the trade-winds to make it cover the Earth, so as to mask all life from the sunlight for many months, if not years.

Our Moon controls the tides, not man. Plate-tectonics control the land, not man. Gravity controls much (the NEXT frontier: electro-magnetism), not man. Our orbit to our sun constitutes sunrise and sunset, not man.

Humans are fucking idiots… they really THINK they control EVERYTHING. Guess what… NO!

    Vaya con Dios

Lotta Lessons to be learned for a team from those
      1972 MIAMI DOLPHINS!!!

A young Gase team of new Dolpins could instantly become proud of their franchise, a lil more determined, and WOULD ENJOY WATCHING THAT, I can hear’Em now “””Woww this, Wowww that”””!!!

      GOFINS!!!

He appears to be putting a team together that is do your job and don’t worry about personal glory.

I was a Landry fan, but 112 receps at 8.8 YPCA doesn’t blow me away. No way am I paying $15+M per year for that.
