The Magnificent Seven! More like 15 or 16

Although this will probably be the “starting” front 7, LE William Hayes, LDT Davon Godchaux, RDT Jordan Phillips, RE Robert Quinn, WLB Kiko Alonso, MLB Raekwon McMillan and SLB Stephone Anthony, substitutions will be rampant.  So many different personnel will be used on this defense, and basically the plan is to keep fresh bodies on the field when the offense has basic formations, and then to change up our defensive personnel to best match up with whatever formations the offense decides to throw out us, whether that’s 2 or 3 TE’s, 2,3,4 or even 5 WR’s or whatever, we will have players on the field that can handle it.  So while the aforementioned 7 may get the start, it will probably be more like 15 or 16 players used depending on the situation, whether it’s rotating fresh players in on the D-line, or bringing in 3 safeties to cover an athletic TE and 2 WR’s, or a receiving RB like an Alvin Kamara.

It’s amazing me to how different the initial front 7 is from last year.  The surprising success of Godchaux now enters the limelight next to returning veteran LE William Hayes, and next to him, the player who every year we hope will turn into a Pro Bowl DT , Jordan Phillips, and next to him, former All Pro DE Robert Quinn.  Crazy, right?  Add in the next wave of pass rushers, Cam Wake from the left side and occasionally Charles Harris too, and then Andre Branch on the right side, along with Charles Harris, and there is some pretty solid depth there.  Akeem Spence will bolster the DT spot as “the next guy in”, and then there will be a battle for the 4th spot at DT, between Vincent Taylor, Gabe Wright, Jamiyus Pittman, and Anthony Moten.  At DE, Cameron Malveaux showed flashes of promise, but it will be difficult to make the 53, unless of course one of the frontrunners is released or traded, like Andre Branch.  At this point, the Dolphins might have that luxury, but as we know, things change quickly.

Even the Magnificent 7 is not set in stone, although I believe the starting DL I mentioned will be the one we see opening day as long as everyone is healthy.  Jerome Baker and Chase Allen will be heavily into the competition for a LB spot, more than just special teams or pass coverage substitution assignments.  Stephone Anthony is far from a lock at SLB, but I think he’s a slight favorite at the moment.  He has the size, speed and athleticism to be the perfect SLB, but his instincts are lacking, so his reaction time slows down his 4.5 speed.  Allen looks like a solid tackler, and we know Baker has better than average coverage skills, and he can chase and tackle sideline to sideline with great speed, but is he tough enough to to stay on the field?  That’s a question that will be answered not only in training camp and the preseason, but all season long.

Is it possible our defense can be better without Ndamukong Suh?  This guy thinks so.  No longer will any player be out there for close to 900 snaps, it’s too exhausting, and even the best of the best wear down physically, even if they don’t get hurt, an exhausted All Pro isn’t better than a rested player, and I think we’re going to see that come true this season.  Suh in all his glory was asked to do too much, and the fact that he took that on deserves much credit.  I applaud him for what he gave to this team.  Despite that, he was only a leader by example, not a leader, and not a player that bonded with his teammates, he was more of a hired assassin, not part of a mob.  With more fresh bodies on the field, I think we’ll see our defense kick it up a notch.

It’s been very exciting to hear that in OTA’s (Yes, they’re only OTA’s) that MLB Raekwon McMillan has been the leader we’ve needed, for the defense, directing traffic, making sure players are properly aligned to what the offense was doing.  Honestly, I can’t wait to see him play this season.  OK, not sure how many words I’ve typed and I haven’t brought up Minkah Fitzpatrick yet!  True, this is a front 7 article, but Minkah will be such a big part of our defense this year, and I believe he will be used extensively this season, right out of the gate. You want your best players out there, and I assure you he will be one our best.  Who cares whether it’s at FS, S, CB, NB, LB, just get this kid on the field!  The more I look at the players we have available this year, the more excited I get.  I’m not sure if this defense will be great immediately, but I think it has potential to be.  In addition to the front 7, if the safety trio, Reshad, Minkah and T.J., as well as the starting corners, whether that’s Xavien, Tank or Lippett and Bobby Mac do their jobs, I think we could be a surprise this season.  Can’t wait to get it on!

Interesting i was following links about Woody Harrelson and came across his father, who apparently was a murderer. I followed it even further and found out that according to some, Woody being one of them, he was a CIA hitman. Following that even further it appears he was one of three men arrested for being near the grassy knoll area when Kennedy was assassinated. None of these articles came from conspiracy websites either, and there are official records of Harrelson’s father being arrested that day at that spot.

So the offense looked rough today. Inconsistency seems to be the only consistent thing about this team

Lippett was sidelined today with an undisclosed malady.

When Drake speaks of Gore I’m not sure, if he’s humble, naive, or just not ready to be a real pro yet.

It’s like an ugly person talking about someone that’s good looking, an opposite attraction type of thing, or a something they aren’t.

A top young player doesn’t normally speak about a vet this way. Not really sure what to think about Drake.

  5. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Harris was working on the sidelines today Resting play sore shoulder. I hope it is just normal soreness and not an injury !

Good write up, Mike! I’m excited about the potential of this defense too.

I’m not sure what Steve was alluding to with what Drake said about Gore either.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I believe what he’s saying is Drake is not showing the hunger of a guy who wants to be a starter. As if he’s accepted the role of backup, and he’s deferring to Gore to be the starter.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

        What did he say?

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I have no idea Tim, but that’s what I think that’s what Steve is implying. We’ll have to wait for Steve for the official word. lol

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Not that he’s deferring to Gore as the starter, because I see Drake as the starter, he’s just acting weird.

  8. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

One of the reasons for VGK success has been the play of their 4th line, the depth keeps guys fresh.

I hope the Fins duplicate this depth.

  10. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

How many times have we seen our D go 3 and out, then once they give up a 1st down, they cant get off the field?

Gase and Burke should have their hands full scheming which players should be on the field at any given time. A good problem to have.

    Matchup possibilities galore.

  11. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – I really think the Mets should trade deGrom. I don’t see any future for the Mets going anywhere as constituted, and I feel for deGrom going out there every start just to watch his beautiful pitching be flushed down the toilet by the bullpen. We can probably get some nice return fro deGrom, some nice young players. That’s what this team needs. We need an influx of very talented prospects. I’d even trade Thor as well if we could get a great return for him. I’d sooner keep Thor because he’s young and maybe by the time this team is ready to compete, he will be a seasoned veteran in his prime, 28-30 years.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Good idea, the cupboard is bare on the LV Mets.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yeah, you would know. It is pretty sad. We don’t have a prospect down there in the top 100 in baseball I’d bet.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The Mets aren’t built well and they don’t have the young talent in the minors to make much impact so I hear what you’re saying. It sucks. From where we were in the World Series a few years ago to today really sucks!

  12. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Nice article Mike, I think Minkah will be our starting FS, I don’t think the loss of Suh will be a big deal, he was free-lancing and that’s why i believe he’s no longer here,

What i like about this front 7 is the quality of DE’s, i hope we keep Branch and have constant pressure all the time, Hayes is great in run D

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Thanks Rob – I think Minkah will play a lot of CF, but he will also be asked to cover certain difficult matchups, TE’s, WR’S and RB’s too. If we do keep Branch, my hope is that he prospers from coming in fresh backing up Quinn, who hopefully is giving the opposing OL more than they can handle.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Agree, and also think LBs will more than make up for Suh.

DBs, LBs, and DEs better than last year equals better overall D.

  13. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Mike E — man that is some incredible writing and analysis. And not sure about Magnificent 7, but the bigger number might make for that. And then there is the back four. Or is that back back five or six? Flooded there as well. Deep every spot on D ‘cept DT.

  14. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

    Another good write Mike E

This defense has a good chance to finally be good. All depends on the LBs…..

Minkah is going to be stud out there. I’m not worried about the back end at all.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It’d be nice to have this year begin by not losing a top draft pick on the 1st play of preseason. And to not lose our starting QB. And to have a center that can practice all week with the rest of the line. And to have our line play and gel together. Fingers crossed!

  30. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

STEVE CCNV; EARLIER YOU asked me about the decision NOT to suspend Wilson for his cheap shot on Messershault. My take is this: Wilson’s already been suspended THREE TIMES THIS SEASON for cheap shots, one of which put a Pittsburgh player OUT FOR THE SEASON!! This would have, and SHOULD HAVE been his fourth suspension for the same thing. Apparently, Wilson is NOT getting the message. But, being hearing impaired myself, I’ve got JUST THE THING TO IMPROVE Wilson’s cognitive powers: a suspension WITHOUT PAY for the next 2 playoff games AND a suspension WITHOUT PAY for the first 3 games of the next season!! –And I’d let him know that on his NEXT SUSPENSION AFTER THIS ONE, he’ll be looking at a 41-game suspension (exactly half a season) without pay!
    ——————-
The NHL is VERY LUCKY that none of Wilson’s victims have been paralyzed for life and/or suffered an injury that ended his career (although the Pittsburgh player is looking at a VERY LONG PERIOD OF RECOVERY and is NOT assured of returning to play). The LEGAL REPERCUSSIONS of a career ending cheap shot by Wilson would be devastating to the NHL. They need to PROVE that they take these kinds of incidents VERY SERIOUSLY–or be prepared to be dragged into an American court and watch as Wilson is charged with felonious assault and is sentenced to many, many years in an American prison.
    ——————
This Washington-Las Vegas Stanley Cup Finals has the potential to greatly raise the overall status of the great sport of hockey. The NHL would be very wise NOT to let some GOON destroy the good this series could accomplish.

  31. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Does anyone feel that we may carry 6 WRs heading into the regular season? I’m not sure (it’s still very early), but my gut is saying no.

I’m not going to be happy if Leonte Carroo goes out like DT3.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And when I say “goes out like DT3”, I’m referring to another day 2 pick that can’t stick to our roster… especially after using draft capital to trade up for him (like DT3).

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ha, I was just talking about Carroo. It’s possible, but he still has to beat out Ford, Owusu and Lewis. Does Carroo play ST’s?

  32. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Agree ER – Carroo is in trouble. He’s not even close to being safe for a roster spot. I think he still has a chance, but he’s going to have to do so much more this season to give them a reason to keep him over Ford, Owusu, Scott and Lewis. I can’t recall if Carroo even plays on special teams

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I don’t believe Carroo plays STs, but I could be wrong.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

He doesn’t have a single tackle registered to his name, according to PFR… but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t play STs.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yeah, I’m not sure if he does play on ST’s, but if the other guys do, that gives them even more of a shot. It’s frustrating as hell to think about what they gave up to get him, but that alone is not a good enough reason to keep over more deserving players. He has to earn his spot this season, in year 3.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

100% agreed, Mike E. NOTHING is given, and draft status means NOTHING. Perform, or you’re gone.

You’re too kind, Bro, but thank you! I’m just one of the others here who is VERY passionate about the game of football… YOU (obviously!) included.

I’m RIGHT THERE with ya on the importance of having a POWER RUNNING game.

I remember telling David that Ajayi is NOT a power-runner (at least his Boise State tape didn’t show it at the time). Man, was I ever wrong as to what Ajayi was to become… a POWER-RUNNER.

I truly think that Ballage could become a power-runner for us, as Ajayi had been. Just get that bloody O-Line fixed, and I believe everything else will fall into place.

I’m no longer focused on Ajayi… we must focus on his replacement (AND THE O-LINE!!!). I think we’re going to be pleasantly surprised by our O-Line this year, along with Drake (he’s going to ROCK this year!), Mr. Gore, and Ballage. Time will tell, my friend!

  40. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I have 100% confidence in Mike Gesicki. He’s going to learn how to block, even if he doesn’t want to. Technique will be the key for him, and he’s going to be taught as much. He’ll be able to chip, at the very least.

He’ll probably never become a Vernon Davis, Mark Bruener, or even an Anthony Fasano, in terms of blocking prowess… and he doesn’t have to be, especially in Gase’s Offense.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Even THEY can’t believe how much ‘BIGGER’ he’s gotten, compared to his Combine weigh-in numbers.

    What y’all think?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

M13, you brought up last night who should we bring in once Suh’s 17 mil clears. I agree with getting 2 more big ugly’s, one for each side of the ball. How about for OL Brian Schwenke who can play all 3 interior positions? For DL how about DT Johnathan Hankins who is a very good run stuffer?

    What y’all think?
    ————–
I’d love to do this (and I like both Schwenke and Hankins) on both sides of the ball, but I can only see signing one of them. As Steve mentioned, we need to sign our rookie class, have emergency $$$, and we may want to rollover $$$ for next year.

So if I had to go with one, I’d say a DT… and Hankins fits the bill of a 320+ pounder who could spell Jordan Phillips. Now if we can only sign him on a cheap ‘prove it’ deal… we’ll see.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think we’re going to see any signings of significance. There was a recent report about that from the Herald I think. It will cost about $8M to sign the rooks, and then we want to have some in-season money in case of emergency. Also some have said we may want to extend Bobby McCain before he hits FA next year.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’ve heard the exact same. But as we all know, what we say (or what is reported) and what we do, often conflict.

Miami’s area code is 305… and all of our DTs are 305 pounds… coincidence? LOL

I think All’Dem idiots actually believe that all the off the field BS that took place and sent us astray last year is all gonna take place exactly as it did for a second straight year!!!

    It’s either that,
Or they’re not aware whatsoever of any one particular incident!!!
Let-Alone the 13 or so consecutive weeks that began with THill injury 10 days before the ((scheduled week one home opener)) of uncontrollable, task detouring distractions that changed every particular games approach!!!

    I KNOW FOR A FACT,
That there is not a single National writer that knows the Miami Dolphins
anywhere near to the level of its hard core fans!!!

They have too much on their plate,

Bet that’s cuz of what Irma did to our o17 season, (cancellation of opener & bye)

With all the AEast bye’s being the same,
and with playing each rival twice…

In an unthinkable scenario repeat… At least…
There’d be more options other than outright cancelling week whatever & the bye..

An Irma taking place in Miami vs a rival
can maybe be played up north on that same scheduled week…
The Ole switcheroo, rather than burdening two teams with the huge disadvantage of not having a bye week!!!

I say the same thing every year, but people still don’t seem to grasp the simple concept of what it costs to sign the rookie class.

Tim mentioned above an article by the Herald, saying it was $8M. That’s a gross amount, so for each guy that’s signed that is included in the top 51, one falls off along with #51s cap figure. There’s only a few of the top picks that will make top 51.

Last year they said it would cost around $6M, but the net cap hit was under $3M.

I didn’t read the full description of what the rule changes for kickoffs are…… but this from an article about STs coaches worried about kickoffs going away makes it sound like you’ll at least need more shifty and fast guys in coverage.
    ———————————————
The rule changes that will go into effect this season will effectively eliminate a number of dangerous blocks — including wedge and jump-set blocks — and severely limit the number of double-team blocks faced by players on the kick coverage squad. They will also reduce the five-yard running start coverage players got at the outset of the play, mandate that five coverage players are on both sides of the kicker at the beginning of the play (thus changing the look of onside kicks) and force at least eight players on the return squad to be in a 15-yard “setup zone” prior to the kickoff.

I buy in every single year and each year I tell myself it’s “different ” this time so take this for what it’s worth but guys like Gore (especially), Amendola and how he’s conducted himself, Wilson as guys coming who are known for their hard work and commitment. More importantly though is the type of guys we’ve been drafting and developing and the type of effort and willingness you see from them. Minkah to me is about stars lining up, this dude is special. Id argue that Seattle lost more because it had an identity on D and now it is going to have to try to establish a new one. With the players they had before and their familiarity playing with each other, they are set back even more than we are with our losses. We were pretty close to the bottom so really i think we can be more optimistic to be taking a step forward this year vs Seattle who i completely expect to be worse off than they were before.

    • D's avatar D says:

Oh and i think losing talent hurts no matter how you cut it, but sometimes you gain more by realizing that no matter the talent you had teamwork is more important. We werent getting a good team effort last year and getting back to that foundation of football will help us with the here and now and also help us build on that moving forward. It also helps young player integrate to the system faster because they come in and do their part and not be expected to carry the whole group.
