The Magnificent Seven! More like 15 or 16

Although this will probably be the “starting” front 7, LE William Hayes, LDT Davon Godchaux, RDT Jordan Phillips, RE Robert Quinn, WLB Kiko Alonso, MLB Raekwon McMillan and SLB Stephone Anthony, substitutions will be rampant.  So many different personnel will be used on this defense, and basically the plan is to keep fresh bodies on the field when the offense has basic formations, and then to change up our defensive personnel to best match up with whatever formations the offense decides to throw out us, whether that’s 2 or 3 TE’s, 2,3,4 or even 5 WR’s or whatever, we will have players on the field that can handle it.  So while the aforementioned 7 may get the start, it will probably be more like 15 or 16 players used depending on the situation, whether it’s rotating fresh players in on the D-line, or bringing in 3 safeties to cover an athletic TE and 2 WR’s, or a receiving RB like an Alvin Kamara.

It’s amazing me to how different the initial front 7 is from last year.  The surprising success of Godchaux now enters the limelight next to returning veteran LE William Hayes, and next to him, the player who every year we hope will turn into a Pro Bowl DT , Jordan Phillips, and next to him, former All Pro DE Robert Quinn.  Crazy, right?  Add in the next wave of pass rushers, Cam Wake from the left side and occasionally Charles Harris too, and then Andre Branch on the right side, along with Charles Harris, and there is some pretty solid depth there.  Akeem Spence will bolster the DT spot as “the next guy in”, and then there will be a battle for the 4th spot at DT, between Vincent Taylor, Gabe Wright, Jamiyus Pittman, and Anthony Moten.  At DE, Cameron Malveaux showed flashes of promise, but it will be difficult to make the 53, unless of course one of the frontrunners is released or traded, like Andre Branch.  At this point, the Dolphins might have that luxury, but as we know, things change quickly.

Even the Magnificent 7 is not set in stone, although I believe the starting DL I mentioned will be the one we see opening day as long as everyone is healthy.  Jerome Baker and Chase Allen will be heavily into the competition for a LB spot, more than just special teams or pass coverage substitution assignments.  Stephone Anthony is far from a lock at SLB, but I think he’s a slight favorite at the moment.  He has the size, speed and athleticism to be the perfect SLB, but his instincts are lacking, so his reaction time slows down his 4.5 speed.  Allen looks like a solid tackler, and we know Baker has better than average coverage skills, and he can chase and tackle sideline to sideline with great speed, but is he tough enough to to stay on the field?  That’s a question that will be answered not only in training camp and the preseason, but all season long.

Is it possible our defense can be better without Ndamukong Suh?  This guy thinks so.  No longer will any player be out there for close to 900 snaps, it’s too exhausting, and even the best of the best wear down physically, even if they don’t get hurt, an exhausted All Pro isn’t better than a rested player, and I think we’re going to see that come true this season.  Suh in all his glory was asked to do too much, and the fact that he took that on deserves much credit.  I applaud him for what he gave to this team.  Despite that, he was only a leader by example, not a leader, and not a player that bonded with his teammates, he was more of a hired assassin, not part of a mob.  With more fresh bodies on the field, I think we’ll see our defense kick it up a notch.

It’s been very exciting to hear that in OTA’s (Yes, they’re only OTA’s) that MLB Raekwon McMillan has been the leader we’ve needed, for the defense, directing traffic, making sure players are properly aligned to what the offense was doing.  Honestly, I can’t wait to see him play this season.  OK, not sure how many words I’ve typed and I haven’t brought up Minkah Fitzpatrick yet!  True, this is a front 7 article, but Minkah will be such a big part of our defense this year, and I believe he will be used extensively this season, right out of the gate. You want your best players out there, and I assure you he will be one our best.  Who cares whether it’s at FS, S, CB, NB, LB, just get this kid on the field!  The more I look at the players we have available this year, the more excited I get.  I’m not sure if this defense will be great immediately, but I think it has potential to be.  In addition to the front 7, if the safety trio, Reshad, Minkah and T.J., as well as the starting corners, whether that’s Xavien, Tank or Lippett and Bobby Mac do their jobs, I think we could be a surprise this season.  Can’t wait to get it on!

Dolphins have signed Bobby McCain to a 4-year extension worth $27 million, including $13 million guaranteed, per source. McCain now becomes NFL’s highest paid nickel back.

I have been a critic of his, up until last year, when he first really made a believer out of me. He looked really good out there last year, he was harassing pretty crafty slot receivers and staying on them. He cannot cover elite TE’s though and really we shouldn’t be putting him on them anyways. Without him having to play out of the true role of a NCB he is one of the better ones IMO. I could not have said that about him until last year though. One thing i have always liked about him though is each year he improved on the last one, and lets hope he just continues that trend so he can earn that paycheck lol, thats a nice chunk of money for a NCB.

He’s a hard worker and is a player that’s getting better every year something we’ve missed for a while. Lately it’s been guy after guy hitting a wall and we suffer for it. I think we’re going to see more and more of our young guys become some of the best at their position.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

McCain plays a lot of snaps. He’s on the field more than some of the LBs so the money to me doesn’t matter because he’s called a nickel or slot corner. He also plays outside at times depending on the matchup. Been hearing him referred to as one of the leaders on the team and that he’s one of the hardest workers.

Thats not how i see it. It says to me Minkah is set to float around wherever they need him and i wouldnt be surprised to see McCain lined up as needed as well. I think they are playing to palyer strengths. Need a physical guy to cover a TE, put Minkah or Jones on him in man, let McCain float in a zone or man on the slot, and let the other out of Jones and Minhak play deep while TJ plays shallow like a NLB, 2 LB’s 3-4 DL, both boundary CB’s in press/man thats a Patriot killer.

I think what paying McCain is all about is giving hem flexibility to have several good coverage guys on the field at one time and not always having to put a specific person on someone else, but also being able to if needed. He helps give us more than just a couple different option on every play so it makes our defense richer because we can disguise what we do with him having a pretty solid combination of skills for man or zone.

McCain is a pure slot cover guy to me, even if a good one. And he’s 5’9″. Not like much boundary in him. And yeah they might throw a bunch of different schemes at people, but seems his role is set to me at least.

Now Minkah….he could be the “where’s Waldo” guy. And they might do some really interesting schemes around him and TJ too.

So once we sign our entire Draft class and after now extending Bobby McCain, I’m wondering how much expendable $$$ (minus emergency $$$/rollover $$$) we’ll have. MAYBE we could squeeze in one more decent FA (Johnathan Hankins?) on the cheap… I guess we’ll see once the numbers get crunched and are made official.

I want the middle of our Defense to be a NO RUN ZONE. As such, seems to me that we’re betting big on McMillan being a stud at the MIKE, while also betting heavily on Phillips to finally emerge and stay healthy all year… as our only space-eating DT.

I think I REALLY like how we’ve addressed the team as a whole this offseason… but I’m still concerned about the lack of another space-eating DT. I sure wish I could shake this feeling, but not sure I can until I see positive results/health in the regular season vs interior runs.

He’s a guy that we’ve counted on for two years and he just keeps getting better.”

  15. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Godchaux never really had to worry about getting doubled much. He’s gonna get attention now, and his strength really isn’t working against doubles. The kid plays hard and with some salt. I hope he can take another step forward once the attention shifts his way. He’s one of the young guys who we need to continue to improve for this defense to get better. Good first year….keep it going.

A rotation is fine, but it doesn’t matter if you keep rotating average players in and out. Somebody’s gotta make plays.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Randy, why is it that you use so much logic in your opinions? Asking for a friend. 😉

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Hope both Godchaux and Taylor make that 2nd year jump. Phillips might just be what he is, looks really good at times and then just okay. I believe Spence is here because of the DL coach Kris Kocurek who coached him last year in DET. Hayes will see time inside as well. Not sure about Wright, haven’t seen enough of him. Maybe one of the UDFAs surprises.

Do your job even if average which isn’t bad.

  16. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    M13,
Lol. I’m not all that sure i’m logical. I get geeked up about the season and players just like everybody else. I do enjoy watching young guys develop. We got a lot of young guys who have potential…hopefully they reach it and we can have a decent defense…..maybe even better than decent…that would be nice.

  17. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
This is a contract year for Phillips, so I’m kinda hoping he balls out like some guys do. My worry is that he does….we reward him with a big contract….and he goes back to his inconsistent self. I think Spence was a good signing…nothing special, but a nice veteran guy…..and should at the least be a solid rotational piece.
    ***
We still need to get some push and penetration inside. If we don’t, our edge guys just can’t be as effective. We need some above average play from our interior guys at some point.
    ***
People are trying to replicate what a Philly has done, but they have a rotation of pretty damn good players. It’s not just that they rotate guys….that’s pretty basic. People are devaluing the importance of DT play around here these days….and that’s where it all starts. Lol

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We’re pretty talented at DE. Harris is another guy who should take that 2nd year step. Until Wake isn’t Wake anymore we still have him. Branch is a solid player. I’m a big fan of Quinn and he could be a major impact guy, his edge rushing is some of the best I’ve ever seen. Hayes being the swing guy at DE/DT and even a guy like Malveaux who impressed the coaches could surprise.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m trying to talk about DT play, here! HELL YEAH, we’re SOLID at the DE positions. Can we be guaranteed that we’ll be able to shut down the run up the middle this year… and without Suh?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Don’t know, we’ll have to wait and see. I think it’s more involved than just Suh and the DT position. Lots of teams don’t have Suh or anyone like him and they do alright.

Then again, many here think DT is not an impact position so… 😉

  18. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Who knows how much worse this defense may have been without Suh? Lol

It’s not about Suh. One player….no matter how good….can’t do it himself. But, losing talent hurts, and it can’t just be replaced by a DL coach who yells a lot. Lol

Randy – Not that you mentioned my name specifically when you said . . .

“People are devaluing the importance of DT play around here these days….and that’s where it all starts. Lol”

Don’t you think Suh playing just about 900 snaps isn’t a great answer either? One great player fighting off double teams and playing way more snaps than anyone else is just too much. While our talent level went down, I think the fact that we’ll be rotating in fresher players will offset the loss of Suh. Phillips is going to have to step up his game, and Godchaux will have to continue to improve on what he did last year too.

  22. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MikeE,
It’s not up to a player how many snaps he gets. That’s a coach’s decision. It seems this team has had a disturbing trend of blaming players for poor coaching decisions….or a simple lack of coaching. I don’t believe Suh got to decide how much he played. Just like with Ajayi getting snaps when he was supposedly not being a good boy. It’s up to the coaches to set the rules…even for a guy like Suh. He may have wanted to play, but it’s still on the coach to set up the rotation and do the subbing.
    ***
Your best players get the most snaps. That shouldn’t surprise anybody. And, I’ll take Suh at 875 snaps over anybody else we have on this team. People are just assuming a large snap count meant his production waned. Did it? Can someone show me the metrics that support that theory? Can someone guarantee me that whomever went in for him would have been just as productive or better? I think this whole thing is a red herring. And, the bottom line is that it’s on the coaches anyway….not the players. A well-conditioned athlete like Suh can play tons of snaps. Guys used to play a lot higher snap counts back in the day before all the sub package stuff and nobody said boo! Lol
    ***
I’m all for a rotation….no problem with it, but Suh wasn’t a hindrance to doing that. He’s not the reason we didn’t do it. I hav no doubt he wanted to play. All great players do, but it’s still on the coaches. Again, we can keep good players AND make these sorts of changes. It doesn’t have to be one or the other. Find coaches who can coach and get players to buy in. Gase built a bad team of coaches. He’s made changes. We’ll see if they work.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m not blaming the player, why would you think that? My guess is they probably felt like they had to play him like that because they were paying him more than anyone else on the team. My point was just that Suh played way too many snaps, and he had to be exhausted and worn down because of it.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Randy – I can’t give you concrete evidence, but damn man, were we ever a better defense with Suh? That in and of itself tells me that just the fact that he played 875 didn’t work. One player does not a D-line make.

See my post below. If we’re going to attack and chase the ball at the DT position, we’ve got a lot of work to do in replacing Suh’s run-stuffing proficiency.

What run staffing proficiency? He certainly was able to penetrate the backfield but he was like number 56 in the league in tackles behind the line.

. Can we be guaranteed that we’ll be able to shut down the run up the middle this year… and without Suh?

We have been one of the worst teams in the league at stopping the run since they acquired Suh. But of course it was the other 10 guys on the field’s fault. What are we going to be number 32 instead of number 30 against the run this year without Suh (hyperbole)

  28. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

YES! Either that or it never waxed !

He was tied for 62 in tackles for a loss and his 29 tackles Will not be that hard to replace

$896,000 per tackle Most certainly could have been better spent

  29. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

On Minkah being the right pick, they say FS wasn’t a big need, because of TJ. You don’t look at needs based on who’s playing that position, you have to look at the overall play of DB, and we surely were lacking in a QB/ballhawk type of guy.

It’s going to be interesting to see how they play those 3 safeties, especially now that McCain has been extended.

    • 13kvFINS's avatar 13kvFINS says:

I have Minkah (over the seasons duration) starting at any one of seven different D positions ( S X 2, CB X 3, LB X 2 ), but for game one, play one, if we start in base 4-3, I see him starting over Tank opposite of X…

Anyone remember the name Byron Maxwell??
Man he went from the one to the two to being inactive in o17’s first 3 weeks which was when rookie Tank took over and did pretty well…

Maxwell never played another down and was released a month later..

I think that Tank is pretty damn good but Fitz teamed up with X makes for a total shutdown tandem at CB!!!

As far as o17 DB starters, Tank would be my weak spot (though he’s not weak in any sense), just that Fitz is farr better!!!

That would be my basic D lineup for getting the best 7 on the back-end…

But of course, he may very well start at one of the other 6 positions he excels at?? Shoot Saban suggest that he could even play MLB in certain situations, (which makes 8 different positions he can morp into while Brady is at the LOS attempting to disect!!!

The other positional player that he’d likely be a better option to start for would be the third LB (whoever that may endup being among numerous qualified candidates)..

While (if not a true OLB starting at that spot)
either Fitz or TMc could start there with the other at FS

In order to get the 7 best of the back-end on the field,
game one, play one, and throughout the season
will make for quite the confusing puzzle for offensive opponents!!!

      TMc an established/deserving player
& Fitz should both start somewhere!!!
So in the 4-3 base game one, play one,
I got TMc at FS, & Fitz in place of Tank

      Or

Fitz at FS & TMc at OLB…

(But who knows, perhaps one of them true OLB’s blows the doors off TMc at OLB) for the game one, play one start

Of course a lot will depend on how the Titans lineup..
In o17 we started in the base 4-3 against them…

      With get this at LB
      Kiko, Maualuga, Hull

      Hmmm
Think we’re a little better off at LB & DB ??
      Not a headscratcher, DATTS’FERSURE !!!

Randy, you mentioned above you’re not sure about Godchaux vs a double team. I don’t remember Suh beating double teams. The thought was Suh would command a double and the DEs would have room to attack. Why pay QB money to have a guy inaffective after being doubled, when a lower paid guy can do the same?

Sun’s sack stats are padded due to him playing DE and getting sacks there.

  33. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Can we be guaranteed that we’ll be able to shut down the run up the middle this year… and without Suh?

MF, how often did we stop the run with Suh?

Fagetabout Suh, we weren’t better with him, and we’re changing the DL scheme, so no one has to fill Suh’s role.

  34. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Suh played a lot of snaps, and yes he did conserve his energy accordingly. I was first in line to bitch about taking Suh out, so I can’t blame him for conserving energy, but that plays right into keeping guts fresh with a rotation.

Our biggest issue on D was being thin, once that first 1st down on a drive came many others on the same drive followed. TOP killed us the last several years, again the rotation should help.

  35. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Forget about Suh and any of our Ds with him, this year’s D will be completely different, from scheme to rotation to secondary play. Not being able to stop the pass is more of a deterrent to stopping the run than losing Suh.

  36. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Man was Suh fun to watch…..he was a disruptor. To the point he was doubled most of the time (on passing plays especially). And yeah part of what made him great was a motor that let him be in their 80-some percent of the plays. I’ll go so far as best DT in Phins history. But then we couldn’t scheme him much — you just unleashed the force that is him. And then their was the price tag that got him let go….no one is saying he is not a great player.

and intercepted the direct hands-off in full stride, QB didn’t even realize it, and luckily fell down backwards for the accidental shoestring tackle along with the RB!!!

2 things I was wrong about when we signed Suh, he’d make our D better, regardless of the poor talent behind him at LB. One of the experts said he’ll be ineffective, because those around him aren’t good enough to take advantage of him being doubled. 2nd the money against the cap at a position less important wouldn’t matter. I believe Mike said you can’t pay a DT that much, he was right.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The timing wasn’t right for us to sign him.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Was completely against us signing him. He could have been the kind of guy that pushes you over the top to the ring, but we weren’t ready for a ring.

  38. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Suh played very well for us. How did that not make us a better defense? It’s counter intuitive to think he didn’t. He can only control his effort and play. It’s not his fault others on the defense didn’t play better. I’m not sure what folks exoected out of Suh. Apply the same standard to every player.
    ***
Anyway, it really wasn’t about Suh but about how this team is coached and managed. But, it’s a new year….Suh is gone…and I hope he sucks hind teat if we ever play him! Time for the guys we got to step up.

But at this moment and in order to get what I see as the best back-end 7 in a base 4-3 (to make it as simple as I can) for an article..

“”At this moment””, I’d think that Fitz would be one of the best 7

In the base 4-3 which we started with vs Titans in o17…
In which case, no slot, so BMc wouldn’t start either..

Can we be guaranteed that we’ll be able to shut down the run up the middle this year… and without Suh?

MF, how often did we stop the run with Suh?

Fagetabout Suh, we weren’t better with him, and we’re changing the DL scheme, so no one has to fill Suh’s role.
    —————–
You’re missing a HUGE point (as have our Phins) by cherry-picking one sentence. AS I STATED earlier last evening, I think we’re betting HEAVILY on McMillan to be a STUD MIKE for us (though he’s never played MLB for us).

Think about it, Bro… we’ve not had a really good MLB playing behind Suh the whole time he was here… someone who could take advantage of the double-teams he commanded.

Suh did his part, it’s just that we couldn’t capitalize around his presence. Jordan Phillips certainly didn’t, teams were ready for Wake flying off the edge being we’ve not had a STUD opposite him since Olivier Vernon, and no MLB of ours has been able to EAT off of Suh.

Gat dammit, if this fucked up franchise would have listened to me, we’d have drafted either of Ant Barr, Mychal Kendricks, or Shaq Thompson to feed off of Suh. But instead, Tannenbaum signed Suh to ‘QB money’, while absolutely neglecting the MLB position.

This here is a TEAM GAME, and we never adequately backed Suh at the MLB position. Tannenbaum is as clumsy as he is stupid. This isn’t ‘rocket-surgery’, it’s football 101.

Steve, my anger isn’t directed at you, bud… it’s aimed at Tannenbaum.

  48. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Kiko alonzo had 115 tackes each year he played behind Suh, he just didn’t have a great impact because he wasn’t good at getting off the blocks that got to him, which were tons, how was that with Suh taking so many on on every play?

  49. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I just don’t understand how you guys “saw” Wake and Suh getting double teamed every play…… does that mean the LT and a RB or TE blocked everyone else?

It wasn’t about Suh good or bad, the defense wasn’t built yet. There was still some patchwork going on as they built it to where it is now. It’s not like Gase and his vision has been here 4-5 years. This is the 3rd season. Not uncommon to see significant turnover during 3 offseasons with a new HC. They have a better feel once they know what they have and what they want to change. If he doesn’t win he won’t be here very long. Everyone knows that including him.

We go back too far with this team when discussing the current status. When you have a new HC and personnel dept. start there. Prior to them has nothing to do with today.

GOTTA ADMIT some people (including ME) under rated the Capitals’ overall defensive strength coming into the NHL playoffs. Tampa Bay was only shut out 1 time during the regular season. But, in games 6 and 7, the Caps shut them out IN BOTH GAMES, thus advancing to THE FINALS. Last night, their defensive effort held Vegas to just ONE GOAL as they prevailed 3-1. The Golden Knights are going to have to pick up their offense if they are going to win Lord Stanley’s Cup. Right now, the Caps’ defense is playing at a championship level.
    ———————-
Today’s financial section of the TAMPA BAY TIMES has an article titled “Tickets and the Tax Law,” by Graham Brink. Bottom Line: the era of massive tax write-offs for tickets to sporting events (and club level suites) is over due to the new tax law. This is really bad news, potentially, for the NFL, MLB, NBA and the NHL. Now it is TRUE that the recent corporate tax rates fell to 21%, saving bigger companies millions in taxes. But losing those big sporting tax write-offs is still a blow, a blow that will be carefully studied by CPA’s across America. There’s no question in my mind that students of “The Bottom Line” will tell big corporate ticket buyers to back-off IF these tickets are not CLEARLY PRODUCING MORE BUSINESS REVENUE TO THE CORPORATE BUYERS!

During this off-season, the Dolphins Front Office was faced with a huge list of pressing problems. Many pundits and fans thought it couldn’t be fixed in 1 yr.

The following is a list of absolutely crucial personnel needs. Many of these were positions with no incumbent player at all (FS, PK)(OL coach), or no starting quality player (TE, LG), or a guy there with a completely unacceptable level of play last year (LB), or no back-up to the starter whatsoever (RB).

They have responded by filling nearly all of these with quality upgrades.

    Needs and responses:
    TE x 2 check
    RB x 2 check
OL coach, DL coach, DB coach, RB coach check x 4
DE who gets QB pressure check
    LG check
    C that can practice check
    FS check (First Rounder)
WR who is always open check
slot WR w/ real speed check
Trainer who can manage nagging injuries check
    PK check (???)
LB to call the D check
LB who can cover and run plays down from the backside check
    CB x 3 check
    ST x 3 check
    DT sorta check
    backup QB x 2 check

Trade him to a contender, replenish the team with some young quality prospects, then trade Cespedes and continue the process, Bruce, and anyone else that will bring a good return. According to Spotrac (this includes the new Bobby McCain and Minkah Fitzpatrick contracts), we’re roughly $14.8M under the cap. The rest of the rookie class should cost roughly $5M, leaving us with roughly $10M under the cap when it’s all said and done.

A surprise cut or two (maybe even a trade) could free up more money, but other than that, I think we’re going to stand pat on $10M under for emergency signings, or to roll it over to 2019.

I’m of the opinion that we are TOO deep (is there such a thing?) at the DE position. Conversely, I’m of the opinion that we are TOO thin (only 4 on our roster) at the DT position.

I’d trade Andre Branch and his $10M/year salary (2nd highest paid player on our team!) for a 2019 draft pick(s) and sign Jonathan Hankins. JMO

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You look at Branch’s contract incorrectly because of his cap number this year. His contract is 3 years $24M overall. It’s not a big deal. The team wants to rotate 8-10 DL so not it’s not too deep.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

How are we going to rotate 8-10 DL when we only have 4 DTs? And I don’t want to hear about William Hayes getting looks at DT when he’s only 278 pounds (that’s only going to happen on passing downs, anyway).

I highly doubt that Gabe Wright sticks, and the rest of our DTs (aside from Phillips) go 305. What about goal-line and short yardage sits? OUR interior O-Line (now looking NICE!!!) would DESTROY our interior D-Line in those sits.

IMO, we should get somebody who could spell Phillips… AND play next to him in short-yardage sits.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

We’re ALWAYS — as our current roster is constituted — going to have a DE sayin’, “PUT ME IN, COACH… I’M READY TO PLAY!!!”.

Those who follow such matters already know it, and it’s already been written about. Some stud is going to be riding the pines more often than not… it’s a WASTE of a roster spot and $$$. We need to beef up on the Defensive interior… unless Raekwon has a secret “S” on his chest.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You should probably ask Burke and Kocurek because that’s what’s been reported.

My answer would be rotating 8 is 4 DT and 4 DE. We are likely going to dress 5 DEs in games so that would be rotating 9. 10 is the high number.

  78. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Don’t look at Bobby McCain’s deal as highest paid nickel/slot as a negative, the contracts always go up as we know. Look at what his impact is and how many snaps he plays. He played 855 total snaps last year. You can look at the snap counts with this link.
    https://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/snapcounts

  79. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, also your comment on Hayes playing DT only on passing downs will likely be a lot.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I agree with that as well. I just want to be certain that our D-interior is ready to stop the run… I’m not sold. And if our secondary is as HELLA NICE(!) as it looks, teams will look to exploit our Run-D.

I’m not dissing the team AT ALL. I’m just looking for ways to make our team ever better… nothing less!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Players get hurt too so having quality depth is something you’ll want when injuries hit.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

ABSOLUTELY! We’re TOO thin at DT, IMO.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We’ll see. Hopefully the young bucks make that not so. 🙂

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Tim, it’s not a matter of lack of quality at the DT position, Bro. Rather, we’re funked if any of Phillips, Godchaux, or Taylor go down. We’re TOO THIN at the position in terms of quantity/quality.

But by the same token, ya can’t just throw ‘Joe Blow’ in their to fill a void if necessary.

If we’re to keep our DEs fresh (that’s the idea, along with sub-packages), how are we to function if one of our DTs go down?

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

        Allow me to clarify…

We could probably lose 2 of our DEs and still be alright.
If we lose even ONE of our DTs, we’re in dire straights.

  80. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, you could have two stud DTs on your team and they could get hurt. Then what? How many do you expect to have and carry? You can’t build your roster worrying about injuries. All teams are in the same boat.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Yet, it seems we’re treating the DE position with worrying about injuries.

If the idea is to use so many sub-packages to keep the DEs fresh, what about the toll on our DTs? Phillips has yet to prove himself (we’re still waiting for his consistency!), and the other two are mere second-year players… with the HOPES that they could become good/great.

Who’s going to keep Phillips, Godchaux, and Taylor fresh?

I’m not arguing here, I’m just applying the same logic to the DT position. Nothing more, nothing less. If you LIKE what’s up with the DE position (I do, too!), then what about the DT position? The idea is to keep the players fresh, rotate them, and eventually wear opposing Offenses out. I don’t believe we can do that with ‘ONLY’ Phillips, Godchaux, and Taylor.

I’d recommend another DT, preferably another ‘bigger body’ such as Johnathan Hankins. We’ll see!

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s about rotating guys and cutting down on one or two guys playing a boatload of snaps. Of course you carry players for depth incase of injury but because you can’t predict injuries you just have to adjust when they happen.

Phillips has proven himself to me. He is what he is. He looks dominant at times and just okay at other times. That’s why to me he’s a borderline starter and more of a rotation guy. The team is banking on Godchaux and Taylor making that 2nd year jump. Spence is a solid vet. Maybe a UDFA surprises. At least the coaches know what they have in these players. It’s not like a bunch of unknown rookies. If they’re not good enough then your concerns were valid.

Just roll with the team and root for them. That’s all we can do about it as fans.

M13, I have said DT is a question mark at this time. We’ll see.

You keep forgetting Spence while making your points. We traded for the guy. Kocurek coached him last year in DET and he was probably significant in us trading for him.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

      LOL 😉

Yes, I do forget we got Spence… I’ve got to stop relying on Ourlads for our roster, but I’m sure you already read that, too! 😉

STILL… what happens if Phillips goes down? He’s the only guy on our roster above 305 pounds.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not worried about guy’s weight. Use the official site for the roster. They’re better at updating things these days. You can also view it in multiple categories; position, age and such.

Oh and Spence is listed at 307. LOL

Who’s going to keep Phillips, Godchaux, and Taylor fresh?
    ________________________________________________

MF-13 with Phillips, Godchaux, Spence and Taylor to make the 53 that would leave only 5 DE’s Hayes, Wake, Branch, Harris and Quinn, that’s 9 players on the DL and most likely all we will carry on the 53, so i’m sure all 4 will rotate and split time unless someone loses his job to a rookie or FA.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The way I look at that 9, is Hayes adds depth at both positions. So 4, 4 and 1. We could keep 10 on the 53 but only dress 8 or 9 for games. We’ve done it before.

      DL 10
      LB 6
      DB 9

      OL 9
      TE 4
      WR 6
      QB 3
      RB 3

      K 1
      P 1
      LS 1

Not saying this is it, you could move a few things around.

I believe what he’s saying is Drake is not showing the hunger of a guy who wants to be a starter. As if he’s accepted the role of backup, and he’s deferring to Gore to be the starter.
    ________________________________________________________________

Just remember…… you heard it here first.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s a fan’s speculation and nothing more. Drake thought he was the best back in the draft when he was drafted in the 3rd so there’s that too. 😉

Mike was replying to Steve’s comments about Drake. Steve also evaluates players by the look in their eyes. LOL

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

I view it as respect. He is not going to talk about beating Gore and being the starter. His play will show it…..
Gore deserves the respect and it’s nice to see a young man pa his respects to him.

  85. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Hey Rob – It was just Steve’s interpretation of the Drake interview during OTA’s. Don’t get too happy about it it’s only June 3. 🙂

  86. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

BBM – My dad met practically the entire Big Red Machine in 1977, after Tom Terrific was traded to the Reds. He was in Chicago on business, staying at a Sheraton hotel in Chicago, and he went to the bar one night, the Reds were in town to play the Cubs. He met Seaver and had a long talk with him, met Dave Concepcion, Pedro Borbon, Johnny Bench, Tony Perez, Mike Lum, Pete Rose, and a few others I can’t think of at the moment. My father was so crushed when they traded Seaver, he loved him.

  87. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

ER, it is a respect thing with Drake on Gore. It would be disturbing if he didn’t show that. Gore has also praised Drake as very talented and fast, said he runs routes like a WR. Ballage has shown respect to both Drake and Gore saying he’s a guy who needs to learn from both guys. That’s how it should be. The coaches will decide who plays more based on performance. If Ballage is balling in TC and PS he might see more time than expected in the RS. Competition!

MF13, I’m not saying they are good enough, but there are 7 DT’s on the roster, not just 4. There will be many more available before Sept. I see your anxiety but we have guys that have played and some young guys who will make it, be stashed on he PS or be replaced by another young guy. Spence was brought in specifically with the new DL coach’s stamp of approval.

For what ever reason Gabe Wright keeps making it. through multiple position coaches and coordinators.

    56 Godchaux, Davon DT 6-3 305 23 2 LSU
    43 Moten, Anthony DT 6-4 295 22 R Miami
    97 Phillips, Jordan DT 6-6 333 25 4 Oklahoma
    65 Pittman, Jamiyus DT 6-1 319 23 R Central Florida
    93 Spence, Akeem DT 6-1 307 26 6 Illinois
    96 Taylor, Vincent DT 6-3 296 24 2 Oklahoma State
    98 Wright, Gabe DT 6-3 305 26 3 Auburn

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

And those sizes aren’t static or important. It’s about being in shape. You don’t have to be huge to be strong and good at the position. Complimentary football is the key to the season.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Meaning do your job when called on and don’t worry about lofty goal numbers. Wins should be the goal. That is the Patriot way everyone talks about. Win!

  90. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

And Godchaux played very well last year. He had 26 tackles in 500 snaps as apposed to Suh’s 29 tackles in 877 snaps.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Last year was spun into disarray for various reasons. Throw it away. It’s not a good representative of where we are now. Let’s hope we have some good fortune this year as opposed to last year where a lot went wrong.

  91. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Suh was a freak but he was only 305 +/-

  92. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We could see formations like this – both Gore and Drake in the backfield, Stills/Parker, Amendola/Wilson and Smythe, Drake shifts and lines up wide. The run is still there, speed and options everywhere.

This is TMZ stuff. It’s all about Parker being healthy. The talent is there. It seems he has lower leg issues that are chronic. Not sure nutrition and Chambers’ camp will change that. It might be one of those unfortunate things for him. That 2015 class of WRs has been very subpar and up and down. Weird. It looked so good in mocks. LOL

  94. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, by the way, glad you moved onto a Wake avi as opposed to the old Bess one. It was time to move on. Good choice! Your alma mater too. 🙂

According to Spotrac (this includes the new Bobby McCain and Minkah Fitzpatrick contracts), we’re roughly $14.8M under the cap. The rest of the rookie class should cost roughly $5M, leaving us with roughly $10M under the cap when it’s all said and done.

    Oy vey

Haven’t you guys learned anything on the salary cap , from me?
